The Word

by George Thompson - Editor

Bikers do it for charity I have always praised the efforts that bikers make when it comes to charity and last weekend was no exception. On Sunday my own club, the Cork Motorcycle Racing & Vintage Club had a run in aid of the Jack and Jill Foundation. The run was in memory of Luke Collins, nephew and godson of club member Derek ‘Fizz’ Hayes. Luke sadly passed away earlier this year (2011) aged six. The Jack & Jill Foundation were a great help and support to Luke's family and this run was an effort by Fizz to repay their kindness and raise funds for this very worthy cause. Over 2500euro was raised and a great day and evening at The Silver Key in Ballinlough was had by all. Autism Jigsaw Event My good friends at The Shine Centre for Autism based in Carrigaline and in collaboration with Quinn-healthcare will be staging a unique seminar entitled the Autism Jigsaw next month on October 18th & 19th. An expert panel of speakers has been assembled to speak at the event including Dr Ken Kerr, Penney Kershaw and many others. The purpose of this event is to “put the pieces together” with parents, educators, carers, professionals and others with an interest in Autism where we can share ideas, experience and innovations to improve the outcomes for children and persons with autism. About The Autism Jigsaw: The Autism Jigsaw is a groundbreaking seminar that will bring parents, teachers, carers, professionals, educators, service providers and autism organisations together under one roof for the Autism Jigsaw. The Shine Centre recognises the need to bring people living, working and studying in the area of autism together to gather new information, exchange ideas and enhance their knowledge and expertise of the ASD condition. We know that if we can put the pieces together we can create better outcomes for our children and persons living with autism. We know that many parents, educators and others are frustrated by the lack of information on tactics, strategies and innovations in the area of autism and The Autism Jig Saw will give us all the opportunity to put these pieces together and make a real difference in the lives of our children and adults with autism. This event sponsored by Quinn-healthcare will give attendees the opportunity to listen, get ideas and ask questions of a range of speakers covering all elements of the ASD spectrum. To Book Your Tickets: Go online to www.autismjigsaw.com or call the Shine Centre on 021 4377052 or 087 1192623 Slán George Thompson Editor e-mail:editor@douglaspost.ie

Big hearted walkers needed this September Dear Editor, This September marks Heart Month and on September 25th, the Irish Heart Foundation is organising the biggest countrywide walking day of the year. We’re encouraging communities across the country to get involved in our Big Heart Walks and enjoy a 5km walk by themselves, with their friends or with a group. By walking 5km, and raising €1 for each kilometre walked, every person that gets involved will help us get one step closer to our target of transforming 50,000km into €50,000. This autumn the Irish Heart Foundation launched our massive heart attack campaign countrywide. Money raised from Big Heart Walks will continue to raise awareness of heart attack symptoms and prevention among men aged 40 plus. With the help of the public, we can ensure more husbands, brothers and sons get to hospital at the first sign of heart attack. Every 5km counts and each €5 raised from the Big Heart Walks will remember the 5 men under the age of 65 that die of heart attack every week in Ireland. By putting on their walking shoes on September 25th, our big heart

walkers will be taking vital steps to save more lives from heart attack. A 5km walk will make you feel good and more importantly, brisk walking helps reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke. We’re calling on the public to get involved on September 25th and make their 5km count. For more information on Big Heart Walks, celebrating World Heart Day, call Ciara on (01) 6685001 or register at www.irishheart.ie/ bigheartwalks Yours sincerely, Michael O’Shea Chief Executive Irish Heart Foundation

Maria Montessori Dear Editor, Back to school has re-awakened the memory of Maria Montessori. The nursery Education pioneer who died in the Netherlands in 1952. Dr. Maria Montessori was Italy’s first woman physician. She worked initially with brain-damaged children before applying her methods, which are based on self-discovery and spontaneity, to ordinary children. In 1907 she opened a school Rome, after decades of neglect her work emphasizing early reading and writing is now very much back in vogue. Regards Neil O’Donoghue Greenhills

Discover Cork: Schools’ Heritage Project 2012 The Discover Cork: Schools’ Heritage Project 2012 has been launched for the forthcoming school year. Founded by Cllr. Kieran McCarthy, the year 2012 marks the tenth year of the project. The Project is open to schools in Cork; at primary level to the pupils of fourth, fifth and sixth class and at post-primary from first to sixth years. Cork students are invited to compile a short project on an aspect of Cork’s heritage. A total of 25 schools in Cork City and 20 in Cork County took part in the 2011 Project. Approx 160 projects were submitted on all aspects of Cork’s history. The project in the city is kindly funded by Cork Civic Trust, Cork City Council, the Heritage Council and the Evening Echo. In the 2012 season prizes will also be provided by Sean Kelly of Lucky Meadows Equestrian Centre Watergrasshill, the Lifetime Lab and Cork City Gaol Heritage Centre. Commenting, co-ordinator of the project, Cllr Kieran McCarthy noted: “One of the key aims of the project is to allow students to explore, investigate and debate their local heritage in a constructive, active and fun way. The Project attempts to provide the student with a handson and interactive activity that is all about learning not only about your local area but also about the process of learning by participating students. The Schools’ Heritage Project also focuses on motivating and inspiring young people”. Application forms, a full list of potential topics and pictures of some of the previous project books can be viewed at www.corkheritage.ie DouglasPostAd:Layout 1 18/08/2009 12:00 Page 1

IMPROVEMENTS TO INFRASTRUCTURE IN DOUGLAS Clllr. David Boyle welcomes the improvement to the road network and to the flood protection infrastructure in the Douglas area. Cork County Council has undertaken road maintenance in the general Douglas area over the last number of weeks. Due to the extreme weather that has been experienced over the last number of winters there has been serious deterioration in the standard of road surface. This has resulted in roads, in some cases, not fit for purpose. Cllr. Boyle says, “ It is very important that that the road infrastructure is supported and maintained by the Council. Even though budgets are tight it is important that the general Douglas area, which contributes so much to Council through rates, gets a good level of service”. At present road works have been undertaken in Donnybrook, Grange and the Rochestown road with further improvements to come at the Finger Post roundabout. Cllr. Boyle continues,” People in the Douglas area have been very concerned with the road quality in Douglas and it is good to see improvements taking place. In recent years Douglas has experienced serious flooding which has damaged businesses and homes alike. Central to this has been the flooding on the Church Street. Cllr Boyle continues,” I welcome the improvement to the culvert on Church Street. This is an important upgrading to the infrastrure in the Douglas area. Recent winters have seen much damage to property due to flooding and this improvement will reduce the likelyhood of flooding in the future”.

Broadband Boost for Douglas Cork South Central Fine Gael TD Jerry Buttimer has welcomed Eircom’s announcement that Douglas will be included in Phase 1 of its fibre roll-out plan. Deputy Buttimer said that the improved broadband infrastructure will facilitate the development of businesses in the area. Deputy Buttimer said “the announcement by Eircom is a welcomed boost for Douglas; it is one of ten areas across the country selected for phase 1 of the fibre roll-out plan. This will deliver faster broadband speeds for homes and businesses in Douglas. “Eircom is investing €100 million in phase 1 of its fibre rollout plan which aims to reach one million premises over the next four years. The plan will deliver fibre to the cabinet technology which will deliver increased broadband speeds of 40Mbps and beyond, in some places fibre to the home technology will ensure even faster access. “The rollout of high speed broadband services will facilitate the development of businesses. With Douglas benefitting from being one of the first areas with such high speed access it should encourage the expansion of existing businesses and development and relocation of new enterprises to the area.”

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn

Marion Rose Horgan of Cobh, will be a familiar name many readers of this column. Her latest poem refers to the fallout from the Cloyne report on clerical sex abuse, people are reeling from it throughout Ireland. There is a lot of anger, frustration and disillusionment around at the moment, particularly because of the failure of the Catholic Church to address the issue, and the resulting pain of those affected by these tragic circumstances. Marion tells us she woke one morning recently and was rushing to a hair appointment when the words of the poem began to take root in her mind. By the time the hair appointment was finished, so was the poem, although she’s not sure what the stylist thought of her “demented scribbles!” she feels our readers might like to give it some consideration. Marion dedicates her poem to anyone anywhere who has been affected by this horrendous issue and hope that they find the strength to get beyond the pain and develop loving and trusting relationships.

The Wall Nobody listened, they didn’t want to hear. And I was drowning in a sea of silence. Lost and overwhelmed, by panic, shame and fear, Banished to a dark deserted island. Then a wall appeared, and there was no way out. And I was groping in a deep abyss. And the wall grew taller, fortified by doubt, And I could feel the pain of Judas’ kiss. A wall, that dammed up all my tears. A wall, that compounded all my fears. A wall, blocking comfort and relief, A wall, suppressing all my grief. A wall, that would turn a heart to stone, A wall, that left me so alone, A wall, unyielding and unkind, A wall that stole my peace of mind. Nobody listened, they chose to turn away, And silence screamed betrayal in my brain Suffer little children, nobody can hear, Bow your heads and offer up the pain A wall, to sanctify the lies, A wall, to dampen down the cries, A wall, to hide away the truth, A wall that stole away my youth. A wall, that starved me of my sleep. A wall, impenetrably deep. A wall of power and control, A wall, that crushed my very soul Sorry wont take the pain away, Sorry wont bring back yesterday, Lets go where angels fear to tread, And raze the wall and build a bridge instead. Marion Rose Horgan (Cobh) Send your poem to ‘The Poetry Corner’ / Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas or you can email it direct to ronniemcginn@ eircom.net. If possible keep your poem to 20 lines. You may choose any subject you like, in any form you like as long as it’s original. We look forward to hearing from you. RonnieMcGinn

Heart month targets men in bid to reduce heart attack mortality rates This September marks Heart Month and the Irish Heart Foundation is calling on Irish men to look after the most important motor they own, in a drive to reverse the worrying trend which sees five men under the age of 65 dying from heart attack every week. A new prevention campaign launched by the national charity fighting heart disease and stroke urges Irish men to take a different approach to their heart health. The campaign aims to reduce deaths from cardiovascular disease, the number one killer among men, and to save some of the hundreds of male lives that are lost prematurely here to heart attack every year. Throughout September’s Heart Month, the Irish Heart Foundation will raise

Ciarán Lynch TD

DEBT-FOR-EQUITY ARRANGEMENTS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED IN TACKLING MORTGAGE CRISIS The increasing mortgage crisis means that we need the immediate creation of an agency with legal powers to review each problem mortgage on a case by case basis and impose solutions on the banks such as a debt for equity arrangements. A national debt management agency should to be fast-tracked through the Dáil to avert worsening mortgage misery. The agency should be legislated for as a Government priority and should have statutory powers to assess all problem home loans and to impose solutions on a case-by-case basis. We need an agency that not only deals with people currently in debt but acts proactively to facilitate homeowners who may be in danger of running into arrears in the future. It should be engaging with these homeowners and giving them support in managing their financial situations, so they can avoid difficulties that would otherwise arise. This now needs to be the number-one priority of the Government. For any family, keeping a roof over their head is the number one concern. This agency would need statutory powers and I believe that structured debt-for-equity arrangements would form a major part of the solutions.

Out and About with Fergus O’Leary We all know Jim Sullivan. He’s the man who has the shop on Lucia Place and has done since 1952. On 31st of August Jim turned ninety and that is too big a milestone to pass unremarked. Jim was born in North Tipperary in 1921. He came to Cork with the Army in 1940 and worked in their telephone section. It was through this job that he met Stella who worked for the phone company at the time. On leaving the army, he joined CIE and spent the next thirty nine years with them. In 1952, they opened the shop on Lucia Place, which Stella looked after while he carried on working on the buses. In the course of their busy lives they brought up five children. Sadly ,Stella recently passed away. At ninety Jim has twenty three grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren, a veritable patriarch. Jim is quite rightly liked and respected. He has a well earned reputation as a decent and charitable man, qualities that are rare. Happy Birthday, Jim.

Are You Maximising Your Energy Potential? Do you struggle to get through your day? Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired? What if there were two simple steps you could take now to improve your energy levels? Would you want to know? Many of the energy problems we experience exist because we are exposed daily to toxins. Bathed in a sea of toxins, our body is not able to maximise its inherent ability to use its energy to do the things that you want to do, as it is too busy dealing with crisis after crisis of toxicity. The body has mastered the ability to prioritise energy use according to its needs. It is always seeking to be healthy, and that is why when you cut yourself a scab forms. The body heals itself and, of course, that requires energy. Did you know that every day your body has to replace over 500 billion cells? Let’s put a little trust in the magnificence of the human body. Some common sources of toxins are: pesticide residues in our food, mercury in our food and mouth, phthalates and

BPA in plastics, petrochemical-based skin care products with parabens and air pollution. To cap it off, air in the average home can be up to five times more toxic than outside! The first strategy is to reduce toxins from as many sources as possible, which will help to maximise your energy. Another highly important insight for you has to do with the electrical energy flowing through your nervous system. If this energy is unimpeded and uninterrupted it will travel in an optimal manner at a speed of 270 mph from your brain through your spinal cord to every organ, gland, muscle, and tissue of your body. A properly functioning spine and nervous system equates to greater energy potential and maximum life potential. Learn more strategies by attending my wellness presentation, “Creating Boundless Energy” on Wed. Sept. 14th, 2011 @ 7:00pm. Reserve your free seat today by calling 021-4360009.

Battle of the Bulge. Do you know how many calories you should eat every day? I thought I did. So much for “recommended guidelines” which, for women, are approximately 2000 a day. But what about me? I’ve been keeping to this for ages (more or less…) but I’m still putting on weight! Then I learned that if you eat only 100 calories extra per day that puts up the best part of a stone in a year! Ouch. Maybe that explains why I gain a few pounds just by looking at a bar a chocolate. So in the battle to achieve my own “operation transformation” I went to Women’s Fitness Plus at the Kinsale Rd Roundabout and had a free trial of their gym. The

girls were super and I felt really comfortable in a women only environment and not conscious of any lumps or bumps. I joined their six week weight loss plan and only two weeks in I’m down 6 pounds and have lost inches all over. They are offering ladies free weight loss classes with all memberships of the gym and an assessment which includes an electronic reading of your BMI and your BMR (which tells you how many calories YOU burn in a day), so there’s no more guessing. They do gym membership from only €1/day. Give them a call or see their website. 021 4966904 www.womensfitness.ie

Bee stings Definition Bee stings are a common outdoor nuisance. In most cases, bee stings are just annoying and home treatment is all that's necessary to ease the pain of bee stings. But if you're allergic to bee stings or you get stung numerous times, you may have a more serious reaction that requires emergency treatment. You can take several steps to avoid bee stings — as well as hornet and wasp stings — and find out how to treat them if you do get stung. Symptoms Bee stings can produce different reactions, ranging from temporary pain and discomfort to a severe

allergic reaction. Having one type of reaction doesn't mean you'll always have the same reaction every time you're stung. Minor reaction Most of the time, signs and symptoms of a bee sting are minor and include: Instant, sharp burning pain at the sting site A red welt at the sting area A small, white spot where the stinger punctured the skin Slight swelling around the sting area Large local reaction About 10 percent of people who get stung by a bee or other insect have a bit stronger reaction (large

local reaction), with signs and symptoms such as: Extreme redness Swelling at the site of the sting that gradually enlarges over the next day or two Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) A severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to bee stings is potentially life-threatening and requires emergency treatment. About 3 percent of people who are stung by a bee or other insect quickly develop anaphylaxis. Treatments and drugs For most bee stings, home treatment is enough. Removing the stinger and its attached venom sac right away will keep more venom from being released. Remove the stinger as soon as you can, as it takes only seconds for all of the venom to enter your body. Wash the sting area with soap and water. Apply cold compresses to relieve pain and ease swelling. Treatment for large local reactions The following steps may help ease the swelling and itching

ESB ecars Powers up for Cannonball Run around Ireland ESB ecars announced today (6th September) the entry of the first electric car in a Cannonball Run anywhere in the world. ESB ecars is one of the sponsors of the 1000km road trip around Ireland in aid of Barretstown Camp. More than 150 supercars will participate in the Cannonball Run passing through 14 counties, stopping in Dublin, Waterford, Cork, Limerick, Westport and Kilkenny. ESB ecars will power the all electric Nissan LEAF car by plugging into charge points along the route, demonstrating that journeys in an electric car around Ireland are possible by using the charging infrastructure which is already installed. On Sunday 11th, the final day of the Cannonball Run, ESB ecars will launch a fast and standard charge point in Topaz Athlone as part of the nationwide infrastructure rollout. This is a pivotal location for fast charging as it enables electric car motorists to travel east-west and north-south. This event will take place on Sunday 11th, 12 noon where a number of Cannonball supercars will be on display. “Cannonball, in aid of Barretstown, not only raises important funding but it also helps to promote awareness about the work they do to rebuild the lives of sick children at the specially designed activity camp in Kildare. We are delighted to support this worthy cause and offer a unique aspect to the event by driving the first ever electric car in a Cannonball Run.” said Paul Mulvaney, Managing Director ESB ecars.

Home & G arden Gardening - Things to do This Week

They say Peace and Plenty crown the golden days at Summers end, but it can still be a busy time for a gardener. As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower Garden Mulch hardy fuchsias with bark or leaves. Sow sweet peas in pots in a cold frame Start clearing exhausted summer bedding plants. Prune late rambler roses by cutting out exhausted stems to ground level or a low side-shoot. Start lifting and potting up geraniums and other tender perennials. and bring under cover. Bring late-flowering chrysanthemums indoors.

Kitchen Garden Continue transplanting spring cabbage wherever there is space. Plant autumn onion sets. Tie grease bands on apple and pear trees to catch migrating pests. Cut marrows and pumpkins, and ripen in the sun for a fortnight

Lawns & Hedges If the lawn has suffered in summer, revive with a dressing of autumn fertiliser

Greenhouse Finish planting prepared hyacinths in pots and bowls. Bring inside tender shrubs and other pot-plants stood outdoors for the summer.

Congratulations to this weeks Garden winner Mary Spillane, Silverdale, Ballinlough. Mary wins a 50 Euro voucher from Kiernans Garden Centre, Douglas Court. Our Summer Gardening Competition is open to all our readers. You can win a prize every week from “Now” to the end of September. If your garden or any part of your garden is blooming, or just looking good, why not lets us have a photo. We would love to print it. If you have a neighbor with a nice garden who might be a bit shy, why not take a photo for them. Send your photo to Gardening, Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas. Cork . Or email to frontdesk@douglaspost.ie

Water desert cacti and succulents less frequently ready for their dry winter rest. Keep an eye on the night temperatures and turn on heating if necessary Pot up ageratums; petunias (especially surfinias) and other bedding plants for colour indoors, and late cuttings. Remove all shading from the glass, if not already done.

Water Garden Remove pumps and other equipment from ponds, clean and store.

• This weeks winner Mary Spillane Ballinlough

In General Weeds quickly set seeds now, so continue hoeing and hand weeding regularly. Lift gladioli as foliage dies down, and dry the corms for storage. Sow crevice plants in wall joints, mixing the seeds with a little clay. Sow hardy annuals in situ or in frames for early blooms next year. Take cuttings of hebes in a cold frame as an insurance against winter losses. Divide and replant winterflowering iris unguicularis. Prune weeping standard roses by cutting back flowering shoots

Queen guitarist Brian May has posted a birthday tribute on his blog to the late Freddie Mercury, who would have turned 65 earlier this week. May left a heart-felt message for his bandmate, who died nearly 20 years ago which said: “I was first introduced to Freddie Mercury - a paradoxically shy yet flamboyant young man - at the side of the stage at one of our early gigs as the group SMILE. “Some people imagine Freddie as the fiery, difficult diva who required everyone around him to compromise. Tara Reid has reportedly been left fuming over the way she was portrayed on Channel Five’s Celebrity Big Brother. The American Pie star was evicted on Friday night after losing out to Darryn Lyons, Bobby Sabel and Lucien Laviscourt in the public vote. Reid was booed on her exit from the house and tensions rose as presenter Brian Dowling showed her footage of her time in the house. After Dowling swiftly trying to move on, Reid snapped: “You’ve asked me a question, I’ll finish. Ever the professional, Dowling wrapped things up fairly fast and quipped to the audience: “Well it’s live TV there you go.” Westlife’s Nicky Byrne will be once again be hosting the event.

My Chemical Romance drummer Michael Pedicone has been fired from the group after he was “caught red-handed stealing from the band”. Pedicone joined the band for their ongoing US tour with Blink-182 after their previous drummer quit in March. Guitarist Frank Iero released a statement claiming that the band has been left heartbroken by the whole ordeal. It was never my intention to hurt this band or all of you. Expect two hours of unadulterated sixties nostalgia and fun! The Sunbeam Girls 2 is set in 1963 in the run up to and during President Kennedy’s historic visit to Cork. The girls are filled with excitement because it is hoped that JFK will

G.A.A. FOCUS Snippets from the Local and National Scene

By Pat Harrington J.B.M.

I touched briefly on the appointment of Jimmy Barry Murphy to the Cork job last week. There is no doubt that Jimmy has the credentials to merit the position. He played at the highest level and managed the Cork senior hurlers from 1996 to 2000. Cork won an all-Ireland title in 1999 and lost to Offaly in allIreland semi-final of 2000. I would have first come across J.B.M. in the Lough Street Leagues back in the ‘60’s – I played with Gillabbey Street and I think Jimmy played with the Wilton team. My next encounter was in Secondary School when Jimmy was representing Spiorad Naomha in a senior soccer tournament. He retired from his intercounty playing career with five allIreland hurling medals and one football medal at senior level. I believe there are now a number of challenges that face the new manager. Should he retain some of the older players? And if he does will they continue dictate the style of play? The game at national level has become more physical. Cork will need to match that physicality as demonstrated by Kilkenny and Tipperary. Are there potential forwards with the ability to win possession out there? This is the division that is most in need of new blood. The mindset that sees players content to settle for tapover points is in need of a sea change. Forwards prepared to go for the jugular are badly wanted. Some people in the local media are talking of the potential of our under 21 players. Yes they are talented and are some of our best players at club level, but it is a big step up to perform at intercounty championship level.

The Dual Player I would be slow to involve too many dual players; I am not sure it can be done in the modern game. This is a situation that needs to be carefully thought out by both players and management. Cork won under 21 all-Ireland titles in 1997/’98. There has been no such success at this level since then. Above all right now Cork supporters need to show patience and be truly supportive.

Donegal The following are some of the facts from the Donegal vs. Dublin game and also some comments from the pundits: Donegal made 245 punch passes, failed to score for a period of 30 minutes and two forwards scored from play over 70 minutes. Pundit remarks: “The game was a shambles”, “The players were like wild dogs scavenging for the ball”, “This game was against the spirit of football”, “The game will go downhill if this sort of football continues”.

“Donegal had a plan ‘A’ but no plan ‘B’”, “The players were not thinking for themselves - They were programmed”, If Donegal had won the face of football would be changed for the future”. “No glory in that type of football”. “If that type of football catches on the game is doomed”

Underage Tournaments I have long been a supporter of underage tournaments; they are a wonderful means of experiencing different styles of hurling as played by other clubs. My first experience was the Glen Rovers tournament fourteen years ago. One player from Cloyne stood out from the rest. I well remember how, when he could not legally re-handle the sliothar he would play it to the ground with the hurley and then catch it without penalty. This is a skill I first saw performed by Kilkenny’s Pat Delaney back in the ‘70’s. The most high-profile of these tournaments would have been the under 16 event hosted by Carlow. Participating teams came from Munster and Leinster, as well as from Galway. Seven years ago the Douglas club decided to host an under 13 tournament. There would be eight teams – four from outside of Cork. The organisation of teams can be a difficult job, particularly when a visiting team may cancel out at the last moment. This can cause major organisational problems. The person responsible for organisation this year was Jerry Murphy. Two or three teams pulled out in the week prior to the tournament. Such cancellations could well cause huge embarrassment for the host club but Jerry was not deterred by the let down. He still got his eight teams and did a wonderful job on the day. The underage committee did an excellent job in helping to prepare for the event. Assisted by the ladies and gents in the kitchen they fed up to 200 people – a major feat in itself. Not bad really for an amateur organisation. A day such as this is a wonderful opportunity to display our facilities for teams who had not visited our club previously. It certainly provided an opportunity to showcase Douglas G.A.A. Club. Dicksboro of Kilkenny defeated Douglas in the final and the trophy, dedicated to the late Liam (Sam) Collins R.I.P. who contributed so much to the development of club players throughout his lifetime was presented to the worthy victors. Well done to all concerned. More next week, Pat.

Douglas GAA Minor Championship: As the season reaches a climax Douglas remain in contention for silverware in several grades. This weekend the focus will be on the minor footballers. Three minor teams have represented Douglas this year. On Friday evening at 6.15pm in Ballinlough Nemo Rangers provide the opposition at Ballinlough in the semi-final of the premier grade competition. Douglas defeated Mallow in the quarter final but an improved performance is required if they are to reach the final for the second successive year. Meanwhile, On Sunday morning the minor “B” team will play Western Gaels in Douglas at 11am. Under 21 Hurling Championship: After convincing wins over Glen Rovers and Na Piarsaigh, the Douglas under 21 hurlers face another tough challenge next Monday night when they play a highly rated Blackrock side in the championship final. The Douglas team comprises of a smashing bunch of players. Defeats in successive under 21 football championship finals and a dramatic exit at the penultimate stage of last years hurling competition has left them battle hardened. However, the Douglas team has been guided by an experienced management team and is prepared for what should be a cracking contest on Monday night in Pairc uí Rinn at 7.30pm. Club Pavilion: You are more than welcome to join us in the club bar where all major sporting events are televised on big screen and where there is live music every weekend. Also, the social committee is now accepting bookings in the club bar or hall for functions during 2011. Therefore, if you wish to consider Douglas G.A.A. Club as the venue for your party, please contact Margaret on (087) 9956050 for information.
