South County wins Irish Language Award Well done to The South County Bar and Restaurant on their recent award for promoting the Irish language. At the Irish Language in Business Awards organised by Gael-Taca, Tom O’Connor accepted the Gradam Phádraig Uí Chuanacháin, the overall prize in the competition from Lord Mayor, Cllr, Terry Shannon.

Calling all volunteers!

The Mercy University Hospital Foundation Annual Street Collection takes place on Saturday, November 5th, and we need YOU to get involved! At the Annual Street Collection launch recently were Eoin Cadogan, Cork Dual Player, Rosemary O’Leary, Mercy University Hospital Foundation and Shane O’Neill, Cork Senior Hurler, who called on volunteers throughout Cork City and County to take part in the annual street collection and help raise important funds for the Mercy University Hospital. These funds are used to purchase state-of-the-art equipment and to enhance and develop services, which, ultimately, will provide patients at the Mercy with a world-class service in a world-class hospital. Fundraising in 2011 has been focused on a number of key projects, including the development of an Early Cancer Diagnosis and Care Unit for Gastro-intestinal Cancers; the development of a new ‘Diagnostics Centre of Excellence’ to provide state-of-the-art CT and diagnostic scanning facilities for patients; the development of a Rapid Access Testicular Cancer Clinic and the hiring of a second Specialist Cancer Care Nurse in St. Therese’s Oncology Unit. Recent fundraising activities has also seen the Foundation raise over €900,000, which will go towards purchasing a new CT scanner. If you are available on Saturday, November 5th between 9am and 6pm – even for a couple of hours – your help would be greatly appreciated! Just contact Rosemary O’Leary at the Mercy University Hospital Foundation on (021) 427 4076 or email roleary@mercyhospitalfoundation.ie. Established in 2007, the Mercy University Hospital Foundation is an independent charity for the Mercy University Hospital. Since established, it has raised a total of €4.7m that has supported the development of key projects and helped purchase vital, life-saving equipment at the Mercy University Hospital.

Vision Impaired Service Providers Alliance Dear Editor, I just want to thank the 250 people from all over the country including Cork who recently came out and supported VISPA’s (the Vision Impaired Service Providers Alliance) march on the Dáil. A letter was handed in to the Taoiseach on behalf of the 224,000 people who suffer from sight loss in Ireland. The group (VISPA) also called on Government to ensure that service providers for people with sight loss suffer no further cuts to their budgets. One of the reasons we

organised the march was because of the cut to the blind pension last year and the simple fact that people with sight loss simply cannot be penalised again in the upcoming budget. VISPA is made up of NCBI, Fighting Blindness, Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind and St. Joseph’s Centre for the Visually Impaired. The Programme for Government stated that its goal is to ensure that the quality of life of people with disabilities is enhanced and that resources allocated reach the people who need them. We are challenging the Government to engage with us to make sure that this happens. With over 200,000 people suffering with sight loss, we believe this is a voice that cannot be ignored. The fact that so many peo-

Parades of Samhain Culture Ballinlough Halloween Spook Parade is on next Sunday October 30th. Registration is at 5.45pm at the Canon Horgan Youth Centre. Parade through the streets in costume and back to the Centre for a Halloween party, fun, games and magician. Entry fee: €2 per child and €5 for family of 3 or more. Visit Ballinlough Youth Clubs Events on facebook for more details. The Dragon of Shandon is another street parade celebration of Samhain and comprises a creative partnership between artists and communities that takes place on the night of Monday 31 October in the heart of Shandon, Cork. Each year hundreds take to the streets of Shandon to walk with the Dragon as it travels between worlds in a celebration of the living and the dead accompanied by an assortment of modelled creatures. The evening parade is the result of an extensive outreach and participatory programme that spans several months of workshops with youth groups, the community and voluntary sector, schools and voluntary participants. The centrepiece of each parade is the Dragon, 12 meters of sellotape and animated by twelve puppeteers on the night who walk it through the streets of Shandon along with an array of illuminated props, lanterns and characters. The show opens at the Shandon Craft Centre/Butter Exchange building at 6.30pm. Visit www.corkcommunityartlink.com/ for more details. DouglasPostAd:Layout 1 18/08/2009 12:00 Page 1

Drink Culture Dear Editor, There has been much commenting in the media over the years about the drink culture in Ireland. Most of the commentary traces the drink culture to a history of proletariat and peasantry spending large amount of time in pubs, shebeens as well as indulging in potteen. Whilst there is a lot of truth in that analysis, there is an omission regarding the drinking spree of the upper social classes. They regularly held parties in the big houses which involved heavy drinking. There was also what was classified as gentlemen’s clubs which was many an occasion for heavy drinking. Another great occasion for drinking was the aftermath of fox hunting when the gentry would retire to a large

house for food, drink and merriment. Possibly the greatest bout of drinking took place in the Blarney area in 1857. In attendance at the hunt were the Condrons of old Grange House and the eccentric Cornwalls of Frankfield Lodge. After the hunt, they retired to a house at Monard near Blarney and indulged in a massive bout of drinking. At 3 o’clock in the morning, one of the guests said, “’Tis a moonlight night, we should go on a hunt”. They saddled the horses and mustered the dogs. They galloped from Monard through Blackpool into the heart of the city with the Bugler giving ‘Tally-ho’. With all the noise they woke every dog in the city and disrupted the sleep of the masses. By the time the huntsmen reached the Grand Parade, the horses were exhausted with many of them having damaged legs from the excessive gallop on hard ground and could never be saddled for another hunt. The drink culture in Ireland is not just the preserve of the working class, but part and parcel of the history of the upper social classes. Yours sincerely, Con O’Mahony Grangewood Court.

• Walk your dog before dark and keep him on a leash. • Make sure your dog is micro-chipped. • Find a secure place within your home for the night – keep the door shut as a scared pet could run away and be lost or hit by a car. • Place a dog gate in front of your front door to avoid you dog accidentally escaping when you answer the door to trick or treaters. You could consider crating your dog to reduce the risk of escape, and make him feel

more secure. • Keep your dog indoors. • Play some soothing music or have the TV on to drown out the noise of fireworks. • Make sure your dog is not left alone. • Ignore any fearful behaviour as soothing a dog gives the impression there is something to be afraid of. Ignore any noise yourself as dogs will pick up on your stress. • Try to distract your dog by engaging him in play.

In circumstance of extreme anxiety related to Halloween there are medications available so talk to your vet. Wishing you all a happy and safe Halloween from all at Goolds Vet Clinic. Don’t forget our special offer on neutering this month; there’s never been a better time to neuter your dog.

John Fitzgerald R.I.P

Sadly, our beloved committee member, and secretary of Douglas Tidy Towns for many years, John Fitzgerald, passed away on Sat. last after a long battle with cancer. John was a hugely active person on our committee over a long period, and literally, up to his death, was involved with the day-to-day running of the association. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Sheila, his three sons, Darragh, Brian and Jason, his daughters-in-law, and his granddaughter Cara, numerous relatives and friends, and those of us who worked closely with him. He really believed the ordinary person, working in their local community, on local issues, could make a difference. May he rest in peace.

Residential Property & Commercial Leases database a positive development The creation of the residential property price database will ensure that property sales prices will be available free of charge on the Property Services Regulatory Authority’s website. This service is something that the Labour Party has been advocating for the last number of years. A commitment was also given in the Programme for Government to improve the information available to the public on the housing market and by making this information available we will get a more accurate picture of the current values in the housing market. Currently potential buyers are understandably cautious about buying property as they true values of the hosing market are unknown. With the creation of this database however, people can be fully confident that they have all the relevant information before buying and purchasing on a real value basis will lead to a normalisation of the property market. The scourge of upward-only rent reviews has been another issue highlighted by Labour for the past number of years and the announcement of the commercial leases database is another positive development from this Bill. The Property Services Regulatory Authority’s website will make all relevant information on commercial properties available on their website, from date of the lease, rent payable and term of the lease. By making this information available, it will make commercial leases more competitive as businesses will be able to compare value for money. Any savings at all in this area will help businesses who have been suffering from not only a downturn in business, but also from the Celtic Tiger era upward only rents. These amendments clearly demonstrate Labour’s commitment to fulfilling its promises and to ensuring that the property market is normalised as soon as possible.

Rising tourism figures show Govt efforts are paying off Tourism industry showing strong signs of improvement with Cork set to benefit Fine Gael Cork South Central TD, Jerry Buttimer, states that recent CSO figures on tourism which show that visits to Ireland for the first eight months of 2011 were up by 11% compared to the same period in 2010, are proof that the Government’s efforts to boost visitor numbers are paying off. “In total, 4.5 million people visited Ireland in the period from January to August. This is a significant rise of 11% on the same time in 2010 and a clear indication that the tourism industry is finally getting back on track. “Tourism has been a key priority of the Government’s since it came to office. The sector has been strongly supported by a number of targeted measures aimed at encouraging visitors to Ireland and places like Cork. Many of these were included in the Government’s Jobs Initiative introduced last May. Among them are a visa waiver aimed at making it easier for tourists from emerging economies to visit Ireland without the cost or hassle of applying for a separate Irish visa. Employers’ PRSI for those on modest wages has been halved, making it much more attractive for tourism employers to give people a chance to take up work and a reduction in the level of VAT to 9% on a range of labourintensive tourism services is aimed at making good and services more affordable for overseas visitors. “Minister Varadkar has also recently announced a €9 million overseas tourism marketing blitz to attract visitors to Ireland over the typically quieter winter months. This is in addition to ‘The Gathering’, which will be the biggest ever tourism initiative in Ireland, consisting of a year-long programme of arts, sports, business and community group events in 2013. It is hoped that this initiative will encourage the Irish Diaspora to come home, ensuring a boost for tourism in Cork and the surrounding region. “The Government is serious about tackling unemployment and encouraging job creation. Ireland has so much to offer and by focusing on the tourism sector, as part of the solution, we can slowly restore this country to greatness. These figures show that we are doing just that.”

Inflammation Acute inflammation plays an important role in helping to repair wounds and injuries. On the other hand, chronic inflammation is an important underlying cause of many diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, asthma, Alzheimer’s and diabetes, to name a few. Inflammatory markers in the blood such as C-reactive protein (CRP), homocysteine, fibrinogen and galectin-3, can be used as predictive factors to determine who will be at a higher risk of suffering from a heart attack and many other diseases. If galectin-3 is high it can be reduced with modified citrus pectin. If CRP is high it can be reduced by the addition of nettle leaf extract, vitamin E, high quality fish oil (especially the docosahexanoic acid (DHA) fraction), borage oil and vitamin K. NOTE: If you are taking Coumadin or other anticoagulant medication, consult with your physician before taking vitamin K. For most people, a key to reducing chronic body inflammation is to increase omega-3 and decrease omega-6 foods and oils. The higher the tissue level of pro-inflammatory omega-6, the greater is the risk of heart disease. You can increase the anti-inflammatory omega-3 fats by eating foods like flax seeds, chia seeds, mackerel, and wild salmon. You can also decrease omega-6 intake by avoiding

deep-fried foods, dramatically reducing processed foods, changing your cooking oil from omega-6 rich oils, like safflower, sunflower, corn, and soybean, to a high-quality organic coconut oil, and by making your own salad dressings from high-quality organic extra virgin olive oil. Eating high glycemic index foods, such as fruit juices, white bread, cornflakes, processed junk foods, fried foods (including potato chips) and foods cooked at high temperatures increases inflammation. Your nervous system governs and controls how your body deals with inflammation. Having your spine and nervous system checked by a qualified Doctor of Chiropractic who understands such underlying factors may be a life-changing experience! Growing pains The term "growing pains" may be a misnomer because there's no evidence that growth hurts. Still, growing pains are real for many kids. And it's important to take your child's complaints seriously. Occasionally, what seems like growing pains are really due to an underlying condition that can be

treated. Growing pains typically end by the teen years. In the meantime, simple comfort measures can help your child make it through the night.

Symptoms

Growing pains are often described as an ache or throb in the legs — often in the front of the thighs, the calves or behind the knees. Usually both legs hurt. Some children may also experience abdominal pain or headache during episodes of growing pains. Growing pains often strike in the late afternoon or early evening and disapDiabetes, what do I do now?

pear by morning. Sometimes the pain awakens a child in the middle of the night.

Lifestyle remedies

You can help ease your child's discomfort with these home remedies: Rub your child's legs. Some children respond to gentle massage. Others feel better when they're held or cuddled. Stretch your child's legs. You might make it a habit during the day and again before bedtime. Use a heating pad. Heat can help

soothe sore muscles. Use a heating pad on a low setting before bedtime or when your child complains of leg pain. Remove the heating pad once your child falls asleep. A warm bath before bedtime may help, too. Try a pain reliever. Offer your child ibuprofen or paracetamol. It may also help to simply offer your support. Remind your child that growing pains won't last forever. If you would like more information on growing pains contact Garvan at Lynch’s Pharmacy on 4366923.

The link to the video is – www.bettertogether.ie/content/friends-londiani The prize for the winning video is €3,000! Voting is open from now until 6pm on November 11th. The more votes we get the better our chances of winning.

Part 2 - The Giving challenge

Between now and November 25th you

This is a unique opportunity for FOL to raise money for the work that is on-going in Kenya in our health, education and water projects.

Part 3 - Look for more votes!

You can support FOL even further if you would please forward this email to all your family and friends and encourage them to vote and/or donate too! Gaelscoil To Take To The Streets Gaelscoil Mhainistir na Corann will take to the streets of the Midleton next Monday at 12 midday to highlight the school’s urgent need to have a purpose built building. The school with nearly 400 pupils is now the second largest in Midleton and is predicted by the Department of Education to need to accommodate another 300 pupils in the near future. Housed in the community centre it is bursting at the seams and reliant on prefabs to accommodate everyone. Principal Mairéad Uí Fhloinn described the current situation as inadequate and needing urgent attention. “In conjunction with the landlords, we have developed every piece of available space to accommodate our growing numbers but we are fast reaching bursting point. The building was built as a community centre and never intended to be a school. It is not

insulated and last year there was no water in the prefabs during the very cold weather.” “The Department have told us that they expect us to absorb another 300 pupils in the near future, but have not come up with any proposals as to how. Presently in excess of €150,000 is being spent on rent annually and this kind of money would be better spent on a mortgage for a purpose built school which will serve the young people of Midleton for many years to come.” “The community here in Midleton have been calling on the department to look at the accommodation needs for many years but we are now at a crisis point. We are taking to the streets on Monday to highlight the urgency of the matter, calling on the government to be imaginative in dealing with this

Home & G arden (Fallen leaves, like grass cuttings are worth their weight in compost, so to cut costs in the present financial climate every good gardener knows what to do! Don't forget it is still bulb time. Plan your Spring Garden now! As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.)

Flower Garden

Lawns & Hedges

Protect woolly alpines against excess damp with a mulch of grit and panes of glass overhead, supported on bricks. Mulch borderline perennials such as agapanthus and nerines with straw, leaves or bark. Clear away fallen leaves from all alpines and mat-forming plants. Trim back summer pansies; mound up with compost to produce layers, or pot up in a cold frame for spring cuttings. Feed camellias, cyclamen and other container plants now in bud.

Finish cutting lawns, unless the weather is very mild, and prepare mowers for winter store. Cut back top growth on new deciduous hedges by half, and tidy sides to start training a neat shape. Take quantities of privet, box, lavender or lonicera cuttings to root in pots in a cold frame for hedging.

Kitchen Garden Finish lifting all root crops for storing except for parsnips. Leave some turnips to produce turnip tops as "greens" in spring. Start pruning apples and pears once their leaves have fallen. Sow a row of hardy round-seeded peas in a sheltered bed for next May under cloches in cold gardens. Use up early pale-leafed leek varieties before the hard frosts. Remove nets and runners from perpetual strawberries, cut off the top-growth and lightly fork in a 5cm (2in) layer of rotted manure.

POWERFLUSH Save up to 30% on your heating bills! Any of these can mean rust, limescale or black sludge in your heating system: • Dirty water when bleeding rads • Rads need frequent bleeding • Partly warm rads or rads slow to warm up • Irritating boiler noise POWERFLUSH can restore circulation & efficiency by removing these & treating the rads to prevent future problems.

Greenhouse Check round for draughts and leaks, and repair promptly. Clean up dry gladioli corms and store in a cool dry place. Sort out cold frames move tender plants indoors, and be prepared to protect those left.

Water Garden Net ponds to, trap falling tree leaves

In General Continue raking in leaves and stack to decay. If there are plenty of leaves, keep oak and beech separate for mulching tender plants. Start compiling seed orders, from the new season's catalogues, if you can get hold of one.

Out and About with Fergus O’Leary The Maulbaun Community Centre is having its official opening on the evening of Thursday 27th of October between 7 and 8. Run by volunteers the centre will initially offer on Wednesday nights a women’s night, on Thursday a Youth Club for the 8-12 year olds and on Friday nights Ogra Corcaigh so pop along and see what they have to offer. You know, the volunteers that will be running this centre are part of a much wider network of people who put their time and energy in to running those organisations that do so much to enrich our lives. Here in Passage we’re pretty lucky. We have the GAA, The

Association Football Club, and the Inshore Rowing Club whilst down in Monkstown there is the sailing club, the tennis club and the rowing club. Then there is, if you like, the social services side of things. PACE rely on volunteers to provide, for instance, meals on wheels. Our local Credit Union depends heavily on volunteers. And it is the same story worldwide. It is the volunteer who picks up the slack, who from a sense of duty or from an enthusiasm provides so much that could not otherwise be provided. So let’s hear it for that generally unsung hero, the volunteer.

SIMI urges the Government not to increase motor related taxes in Budget 2012 The SIMI (Society of the Irish Motor Industry) is today urging the government not to increase motor related taxes in the upcoming budget. Figures released today from the SIMI show that while new car sales are up 5% on last year, sales for September declined by 35% compared to the same month last year. Alan Nolan, Director General of SIMI says, “We are clearly seeing some fall-off since the ending of the Scrappage Scheme in June, however, what’s more worrying is the weakness in the underlying market. This time last year we had Scrappage which accounted for 18% of new cars sold in September however, even stripping those car out, this September has been very poor for sales.” “While nearly 34 thousand people benefited from Scrappage, there are

2 million cars on our roads and many of these people are finding it difficult to fund the running costs of their car; from Road Tax to fuel. This is very apparent to us as the fall-off in essential maintenance of cars underlines the fact that consumers are not spending even in respect of basic and essential running costs. Any additional increase in motor related taxation would impact very negatively on the motorist, on jobs and consequently on Government revenues.” Headline figures: · New car sales up 5% on last year New car sales in September down 35% on last September Q3 2011 up 5% on Q3 2010 Toyota is the top selling make so far

this year (13% market share) The Ford Focus is the top selling model (5% market share) 90% of cars sold this year are in the lowest C0₂ emission categories, A &B · 71% of cars sold this year are diesel, 27% petrol

Silver is the top selling colour New LCV (van) sales up 9% on last year, up 6% in September (v last September) New HGV (truck) sales up 3% on last year, down 6% in September (v last September)

Young @ Heart by Phil Goodman

I believe loneliness is the biggest problem faced by older people living alone and to try and combat that. Care-Ring phone service was founded that would support older people living in Douglas and surrounding areas, this service is about communicating by telephone with people on a weekly basis led my a group of volunteers who have been trained and vetted by the H.S.E & An Garda Siochana. It is letting the person know that there is someone there once a week to talk to. We believe the service has helped reduce the feeling of loneliness and isolation and encouraged those who are able to get out, to become involved in the many activities organised by the Young at Heart. In these difficult times, it is important to believe that we as citizens can create change, help to build up our country, to look after each other and restore and maintain our core values back into our society and adopt these now famous words “yes we can” Ask any of the volunteers and they will confirm how successful the service is working, the relationships formed and the benefit that each participant receives is very rewarding. At the end of many a telephone call you will be told “Thanks for calling. You don’t know how much it means to me. I really look forward to it” Especially over the winter months when the weather is bad the days are short and people feel confined to their homes the sound of the phone ringing brightens up many a persons day. Knowing this from a volunteer’s point of view makes our day worth while too.

We were delighted to have Minister Kathleen Lynch who has special responsibility for the elderly, an area that is close to my heart, join us in celebrating the First Anniversary of Care-Ring. It is encouraging to see the Community people from all walks of life who have taken the time from a busy daily schedule to celebrate and be part of this very worthwhile project.

with Peter Bowles

As you can see this weekend is absolutely jam packed with Halloween gigs!! However, I’ve got news of gigs for 2012; Time to dust off those stone washed jeans. New Kids On The Block and Backstreet Boys are coming to Ireland for two dates, in Dublin and Belfast. Billed as NKOTBSB, the two groups first combined in November of last year for a performance at the American Music Awards and have toured consistently since then. The two bands have sold over 200 million albums between them worldwide and are two of the most successful boybands of the past twenty years - even if the majority of them are now in their forties. They play the Odyssey Arena on Friday 20 April 2012 and The O2 Dublin On Saturday 21 April 2012. Tickets on sale tomorrow!! Well, the rumours were true - The Stone Roses are reforming. Word leaked last week. A press conference was to take place at 3pm on Tuesday announcing some "significant" news and, low and behold, the original Stone Roses lineup took to the stage at London's Soho Hotel and detailed plans for two homecoming shows at Heaton Park, Manchester, in June 2012, from which they are rumoured to be pocketing an estimated £8.25 MILLION from gate receipts. This will be the band's first appearance on stage together since August of 1996 when a disastrous Reading Festival performance lowered the curtain on their careers. Ian Brown also hinted that the group have been working on new material, saying "We hope so. But we said that before didn't we?" Lil Wayne has claimed he hopes to retire from music by the time he turns 35.

The Young Money CEO, who previously stated his recent album Tha Carter IV may be his last, has told press he may quit the industry in order to spend more time with his family. Weezy revealed: "Basically, I have been doing this for 18 years, that's reason number one. I have accomplished all that I have set out to accomplish and more." Referring to his YM acts Nicki Minaj and Drake, Wayne continued: "Also I have a label and I've only put out two artists. I have a lot more work to do and it'd be selfish to not focus on being the boss and focus on their projects." Speaking of the main reason for considering retirement, the 29-year old rapper admitted: "Six years I can do this Lil Wayne thing, and my boys will be about 7 and 8 years old. And man, it's all about them then. Whatever they're into." Jay-Z and Kanye West's collaboration Watch The Throne was one of the most keenly anticipated albums of 2011 and was met with great reviews (mostly), but it seems that some weren't too happy with it. The duo used a sample of a track called 'Different Strokes' by Syl Johnson on 'The Joy', but the publishers of the original track say that no royalties were paid for use of the audio. Johnson has said he intends to take the superstar rappers to court. Kanye had previously negotiated with Johnson to have a segment of 'Different Strokes' feature in a song from his last album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, however no money changed hands and the sample wasn't used until its appearance on Watch The Throne.

New spectacular outdoor blessing area at Fernhill House Hotel & Gardens The family run Fernhill House Hotel & Gardens in Clonakilty is renowned for its charm and amazing food which have made it a popular West Cork wedding choice for over forty years. The four acres of vibrant gardens have always been a huge attraction, with their tumbling roses and dramatic water features, but Fernhill has just added another string to its bow. A unique Wedding Blessing area has been built in the shape of a veiled gazebo, set in the heart of the gardens, reached by a wooden arched bridge, complimented by a stunning 20 foot high fountain as a backdrop to host amazing outdoor weddings as seen in many recent Hollywood movies. Proprietors Michael & Teresa O’Neill run the hotel with their family and dedicated team, so there is an intimate homely and familiar touch to every aspect of service. Teresa explained they built the blessing gazebo to go that extra mile and offer something unique to Bride & Grooms “People are having all different kinds of weddings now, as well as traditional ceremonies. Our blessing area is becoming a huge attraction for engaged couples looking to find somewhere

special and unique to celebrate their wedding." The O’Neill family along with renowned garden designer Adrian Marshall created a signature garden that could be used as a backdrop for spectacular wedding photographs and one that could be enjoyed by guests wishing to while away an afternoon in peaceful surroundings. Features include a rose garden, a permanent wedding marquee, a heart shaped flower bed, a 20 foot high geezer and a floral wedding cake which all make for impressive viewing. College Corinthians AFC The weather was the big spoilsport this weekend with most of our schoolboys and Youth games called off. In those games which were played The Corinthians Senior squad made it through to the next round of the Intermediate Cup while our Youth squad were in sparkling form as they defeated Wilton 5-1. Adult Section

FAI Intermediate Cup College Corinthians 4 CIT 1

Corinthians recovered from last weeks reverse against Rockmount to comfortably move through to the next round of the Intermediate Cup with a 4-1 victory over CIT. Mark Murphy, Pat Coakley, Dave O’ Donovan and Ron Stanton scored for Corinthians.

Munster Junior Cup Drinagh Rangers 3 College Corinthians 2

In dreadful conditions Corinthians bowed out of the Munster Junior Cup when they lost out by the odd goal in five against a strong Drinagh Rangers side. Mark O’ Sullivan opened the scoring for Corinthians and Daragh O’ Sullivan scored early in the second half but in between Drinagh scored three times and held on late on to secure their passage into the next round.

Schoolboys Section

Under 13 Rockmount 2 Corinthian Boys A 2 Corinthians Boys B 0 Kanturk 1

Another poor league result for Corinthians away to Kanturk as they

controlled the game for the most part but failed again to press home their advantage. A corner conceded in the second half once again proved to be their undoing as a Kanturk player took possession of the initial clearance and had all the time in the world to pick his spot from outside the box. Corinthians have a mountain to climb now in Division 4 and will need to turn things around if they are to make any headway. At times the boys played great football but lacked the killer instinct to reflect their dominance on the score board. Best for Corinthians were Brendan Powter and Rory Kennedy.

Youths Section

Under 18 Munster Youth Cup College Corinthians 5 Wilton 1

Corinthians eased their way through to the next round of the Munster Youth Cup with a comfortable victory over a gallant Wilton side, Sean O’ Mahony, Ian Tobin, Dave Mc Carthy, Paul Higginbotham and Ian Long scored for Corinthians.

Schoolgirls Section

Under 16 Kinsale 0 Corinthians Girls 6

Corinthians Girls continued their fine start to the season with an excellent away victory over Kinsale. Niamh Mc Greevy (2), Meagan Connolly (2), Kim Dennehy and Avril Burke scored for Corinthians and Lisa Lynch, Stephanie O’ Sullivan, Aine Kearney and Orlla Magner impressed for Corinthians on the day.

Cork Hurling Great Alan Browne Retires Having spent almost thirty years playing hurling for Blackrock, Alan Brown has decided to call an end to his career. His exit from the playing fields of the County will be regretted by his many admirers inside the Rockies , throughout the county and the country. A formidable opponent and forward he never gave less than 100% effort in the “green and gold” of the club or in the Cork jersey at senior and under 21 level. Holder of an All-Ireland senior medal and captain of Cork in 2003 All-Ireland final defeat by Kilkenny he was always well respected by team-mates and opposing defenders at that level. Recently in an interview on local radio in Clare Brian Lohan, Clare full back legend ,stated that Alan was one of the toughest and hardest opponents he had played against and he went on to say that “ if you were playing Cork on Sunday and Brown was full-forward you would’nt sleep too well that week” At club level he was a key member of the 1999 ,2001 and 2002 County Championship winning teams and scored 3-7 in the 2002 decider V Imokilly. This is the second highest score in a Cork County Senior Final since the beginning of the Association. He was an outstanding competitive under-age hurler and was captain of the Blackrock minor team that won the inaugural Premier County Minor League in 1992. He played Fitzgibbon Cup with UCC and coached the College in recent years in that competition. He certainly has given outstanding service to the Rockies , to Cork and to the game of hurling. Check out the Evening Echo of Friday Nov. 21st for a fantastic two - page article on Alan by John Horgan. A well deserved tribute to a great Rockie.

Blackrock Inn Retain Charity Ryder Cup On Saturday the 22nd last under difficult weather conditions 28 patrons of the Blackrock Inn and The Leaping Salmon bars played each other in the 2nd charity Ryder Cup in Mahon Golf Course An idea that started as a slagging match between two customers ended up being a fund raiser for local charities in Blackcock Run under the same format as the golf Ryder cup which included singles foursomes and four balls the customers from both bars as well as having a great days golf managed to raise €1200 for Cystic Fibrosis which was the charity nominated by John and Ursula O Connell of the Leaping Salmon bar When told of the idea last year Barry O Driscoll of the Blackrock Inn had no hesitation in jointly sponsoring the event with the leaping Salmon bar As winners of the event

last year the Blackrock Inn had only to draw with the Leaping Salmon golfers to hold on to the trophy for another year and this they did on a score line of 4 1/2 to 4 1/2 each After being treated to a hearty meal after the games finished the golfers retired to the Leaping Salmon bar where Ursula O Connell as the owner of the losing bar had again to present the trophy to Blackrock Inn non playing captain John Desmond A presentation also took place of the money raised to Diane Kavanagh for the Cystic Fibrosis charity Picture shows Ursula O Connell Leaping Salmon and Ian O Driscoll Blackrock Inn presenting the funds raised to Diane Kavanagh for Cystic Fibrosis and Ursula O Connell Leaping Salmon presenting the trophy to John Desmond captain Blackrock Inn

G.A.A. FOCUS Snippets from the Local and National Scene By Pat Harrington County Championships

No doubt the standards were not what we expected from some of the grades but the county championships threw up some stunning results. First up were Carrigtwohill winning the Cork county senior hurling championship. This was certainly a huge and a very pleasant surprise. Though not such huge surprise was the first intermediate hurling county for De Courceys. They had been most unlucky over the past number of seasons losing in four finals. Their day had to come. Everyone fancied Nemo in the football, but by the time the final came around Castlehaven were popular favourites. Here of course U.C.C. claimed the honours. Newmarket were surprise winners in the intermediate football. Having lost the first two rounds they came good to claim the title and to achieve senior status for the first time.

U.C.C.

On the evening following the football county final the opening sentence of the report in De Paper read “Those who question the participation of U.C.C. in the county championships got their answer”. I suppose one could comment on this in a number of ways. First and foremost I cannot agree with senior players participating in two different counties. The college could play a strong selection in the first round, yet they may be missing players in the next encounter. For example, if Dr. Crokes win the Kerry county championship the players who play with U.C.C. will most likely play with the home team in the Munster Clubs championship. I also hold the

view that U.C.C. winning the championship does nothing for Cork football.

Redmonds

I attended Sullivan’s Quay school at primary level where there was great interest in Gaelic football and hurling. We used to train and play in Deerpark. Many pupils were encouraged to play with St. Finbarr’s so I joined that club at 13 years of age. I have very few memories of this period of my career other than the fact that The Glen in hurling and St. Nicks in football were much too strong for us. In 1968 a few of my school friends and I joined Redmonds. Tadhg Drinan was in charge at the time. (He would be regarded as the manager in today’s world). There was instant success that first year. We defeated Glen Rover’s second team in the B grade hurling final played in Douglas. Sadly that was in end of our success. We suffered some heavy defeats in subsequent years as Redmonds struggled with their underage teams. For years now the club has failed to field a team at that level. I understand that Cork G.A.A. urban co-ordinator John Neville is attempting to revive Redmond’s underage section. They are starting with go-games. We sincerely wish them success in their endeavours because sadly the club has struggled to survive, even at adult level.

Mayfield – 1978

Last Sunday Mayfield contested the Junior Hurling county final with Charleville in an exciting game that ended in a draw. The replay should be worth waiting for. They were the last city team to win this competition; that was back in 1978. I played against
