The weather didn’t hold up well for the holiday weekend but it didn’t seem to dampen the spirits of those who enjoyed the festivities over the weekend, which by all accounts was once again hugely successful. As usual primary schools closed for the mid term break with the customary Halloween fancy dress and while the start of the week was bright and sunny abeit on the cold side, lets hope that the dry, sunny weather holds up for the remainder of mid term.

Congratulations to Michael D. Higgins, veteran politician, poet and human rights activist, who was declared the winner on Saturday of probably Ireland’s most intensely fought presidential election with nearly 57 percent of votes. The campaign threw up it fair share of controversy also but the bookies and the people’s favourite won out in the end. Now the 70 year old president elect has decided to resign immediately as president and member of the Labor Party, because his new role as head of state means he must be “a president for all the people.” Higgins who is a former Galway university lecturer and published poet who has dedicated his four-decade political career to championing Irish culture and human rights causes worldwide, will be inaugurated on November 11th.

An 25ú Samhain 2011 A Bhall Dílis, Táim ag scríobh chugat thar cheann Gael-Taca chun cuireadh a thabhairt duit bheith linn d’oíche mhór na Gaeilge sa South County Bar sa Dúghlas ar an 25ú Samhain 2011 @ 8.30 i.n. Seo oíche shóisialta bliantúil a bhíonn againn, agus bíonn an-ócáid againn de ghnáth. Gan dabht tugann an oíche deis dúinn freisin cúpla pingin a shaothrú mar eagraíocht chun cabhrú linn ár gcuid pleannana a chur i gcrích agus forbairt a dhéanamh ar an Ionad Gaeilge atá againn i lár na Cathrach mar áis do Ghaeilgóirí. Ba bhreá linn do thacaíocht a fháil don ócáid seo. Beidh Oíche Ráis againn ar dtús, le deis ag daoine geall a chur ar chapall, píosa spraoi a bheidh ann le na rásanna ar scáileáin, agus spot-duaiseanna anseo is ansiúd. Ina dhiaidh san, beidh ceol agus amhránaíocht. Táim ag scríobh chugat ag iarraidh ort capall ráis a cheannach don oíche ráis. Cosnaíonn gach capall €20 – ACH – ní gá duit capall a cheannach leat fhéin. Is féidir le ceathrar nó cúigear teacht le chéile, cúpla euro a chaitheamh isteach sa phota, agus capall a cheannach eadraibh. Ní gá duit ach bualadh isteach chugainn ar Phort Uí Shuilleabháin, nó
an t-airgead agus nóta a chur sa phost chugainn, agus cuirfear do chapall in áirithe dhuit. Beidh an-oíche go deo againn, agus tá súil againn do thacaíocht a fháil don ócáid iontach seo. We are looking for your support for our Annual Fundraising night. We are having a race night in the South County Bar in Douglas, on Friday 25th of November, @ 8.30 p.m. followed by music and entertainment. We hope you will be able to buy a horse to support us in our efforts to develop our Irish Language Centre on Sullivans Quay. Each horse costs 20euro, but if you do not want to buy one individually, you can come together with 4 or 5 others, so it will only cost 5 euro per person. Any help you can give at all will be very much appreciated. To reserve your horse, call into our Irish Centre at 22 Sullivans Quay, or alternatively you can pop your money in the post. Bígí linn!!! Herding Buffalo My son’s school had a visiting schoolboy rugby team from England. We, as parents, were asked to take in a boy or two for the duration of their stay; two nights. I bit the bullet and offered to take two: in for a penny, in for a pound. As requested we turned up at the school on Tuesday at 5pm to collect our boys, Max and Matthew. My two younger boys were mesmerised by their accents as I asked them about themselves. I was surprised to learn that they had been in the country since the previous Friday and that Cork was their third stop, they had stayed with other families in Dublin and Limerick. Matthew told us that the boys in Dublin warned them that Limerick was known as Stab City and they wouldn’t be able to understand anyone in Cork. I commented that it must be hard moving from city to city to which Max drily informed me that as his parents were divorced, he was used to living out of a suitcase and shuttling between two houses. Seeing as the trip was of a rugby nature, I made a detour to pass Musgrave Park, the home of Munster in Cork and that Ronan O’Gara, Rua Tipoki and Anthony Horgan lived nearly to which Max drawled, “Quite the star studded neighbourhood then!” I found his cynicism hilarious and had to keep reminding myself that he was only 14. As we crawled through Douglas in rush hour traffic, Max asked, “What
do you do for excitement around here then?” I pointed to the library building passing on our left and my nine year old excitedly shouted, “And over there is McDonalds!” The following evening, I joined forces with another ‘rugby mum’ and took six of them to Mahonpoint for excitement. The car could barely take the weight of six burly boys as I struggled up Maryborough Hill in first gear to join the Link. The boys fought to sit behind me: I shove the driver’s seat right up so that my legs can reach the pedals thus creating ample leg room. My husband warned me that a 14 year old’s idea of excitement was sneaking into a pub and getting access to drink. I reassured him that I would accompany the boys at all times but when I went to queue up for tickets to How to Lose Friends and Alienate People (their choice), my 14 year old son whispered to me, “You’re not coming in with us, are you?” I respected his space and bowed out without a murmur. I spent the time mooching around the shops which is hard to do on a Wednesday evening as most of them are shut by 7 o’clock. They emerged from the cinema present, correct and sober and then they swarmed as one over to McDonalds as they were ‘starving.’ As much as I enjoyed their company and the noble feeling I get when ‘I’m doing my bit’, it’s always a relief to see them off.

Extra Dáil Sitting Days Fine Gael Cork South Central Deputy, Jerry Buttimer, has said the Government decision not to take a mid-term break next week is to be welcomed as it will give TDs and Senators an opportunity to come to the Dáil to debate issues of public importance. “The decision taken this morning by the Government not to take a mid-term break next week as scheduled, but to come into the Dáil and Seanad, shows it is committed to increasing Dáil sitting days and to getting the country back on track. “Year on year, proposals are put forward by the Opposition groups for shorter holidays which are routinely voted down by the Government. In this instance, however, the Fine Gael-led Government gave consideration to the Opposition proposal and agreed to forfeit the mid-term break, with both Houses sitting next week. “This Government is serious about changing the way politics works. As part of our plans for Dáil reform, the Programme for Government commits to the introduction of a package of changes that will bring about a 50% increase in Dáil sitting days. Since coming to office the increase in the number of sitting days for this year is already in the region of 30%. This is due to a reduction of four weeks in the summer break, one week less at Easter, no break at St. Patrick’s Day, the resumption of the Dáil on Tuesday following bank holidays, as opposed to Wednesday as was the norm, and the introduction of Friday sittings. The Dáil Christmas break will also be one week shorter. “I welcome the decision to come to the House next week and commend the Government on its serious consideration of Opposition proposals.”

FREE WI-FI ACROSS IRISH RAIL SERVICES TO BE WELCOMED Cork South Central TD and Chairperson of the Oireachtas Committee on the Environment, Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht, Ciaran Lynch, has welcomed the announcement that free Wi-Fi is now available in all 67 carriages of the Intercity fleet on the Dublin to Cork route. “More and more people are using mobile internet, be it on their smartphones, tablets or laptops and as a result, the availability of free Wi-Fi factors in to how people ultimately decide how to travel. This announcement by Irish Rail therefore, is to be warmly welcomed. “By making free Wi-Fi available, Irish Rail is encouraging customers to travel by rail, making their journey more environmentally friendly than other modes of transport. “I am also encouraged to hear that Irish Rail intends to extend this service further. By 2012, it is anticipated that the Intercity railcars which operate Dublin to Sligo, Westport, Galway, Limerick, Tralee, Waterford & Rosslare; plus Cork-Tralee will all have free Wi-Fi. So too will the DART and Commuter services and the Dublin/Belfast Enterprise. “The fact that Irish Rail is extending its Wi-Fi services illustrates that they are responding to customers and are adapting to their needs. To use the service customers simply turn their device on and connect to ‘Free_Train_WI-FI’.

ART THERAPY Art therapy is a gentle but powerful form of therapy that focuses on the exploration of personal issues through the therapeutic use of art making. Diabesity
Diabetes and obesity are epidemic worldwide. Many doctors refer to this “plague” as “diabesity”. Globally there are more than a billion people affected by diabesity. The numerous conditions that fall under the umbrella of diabesity include type 2 diabetes, adult-onset diabetes, Syndrome X, obesity, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance and pre-diabetes. Those with diabesity are at increased risk of developing heart disease, stroke, cancer, dementia, and blindness, to name a few. Sugar cravings and belly fat often accompany diabesity. An estimated 180,000 people in Ireland have diabetes. According to the World Health Organization, 346 million people worldwide now have diabetes. Millions of people are dying yearly as a consequence of high blood sugar. If the conventional approach to treating diabetes worked, why is there an upsurge of those who are diabetic and/or obese? Research shows that the primary cause of diabesity is the modern western lifestyle and the chronic low-grade inflammation that accompanies it. A few factors are: dietary toxins (sugar-sweetened drinks, processed foods, junk foods, gluten/wheatcontaining foods, fructose, omega-6 seed oil), environmental toxins (BPA, pesticides, heavy metals like mercury, phtha-
lates), vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency, sedentary lifestyles (TV watching) and altered gut microbiotica from antibiotics and formula-feeding infants. Is it possible that correcting the chronic low-grade inflammation is the answer to diabesity? Present research says yes. Reduction of fructose and dietary and environmental toxins, optimisation of omega-3/omega-6 ratios, regular exercise that you enjoy and correction of vitamin D insufficiency gets one started. Home-prepared, fresh whole food, preferably organic, is the best way to deal with the global problem of diabesity. What is in your trolley when you leave the grocery store? Which restaurants does your family go to? Sadly, for the majority of people, answers to these questions indicate why we are seeing an explosion of diabesity - a visible marker of looming and unnecessary suffering. Your nervous system governs and controls how your body deals with inflammation. Having your spine and nervous system checked by a person who understands such underlying factors - a qualified Doctor of Chiropractic - may be a life-changing experience! Hangovers A hangover is a group of unpleasant signs and symptoms that can develop after drinking too much alcohol. As if feeling awful weren't bad enough, hangover is also associated with poor performance and conflict at work. As a general rule, the more alcohol you drink, the more likely you are to have a hangover the next day. But there's no magic formula to tell you how much you can safely drink and still avoid a hangover. However unpleasant, most hangovers go away on their own, though they can last longer than 24 hours.
Symptoms
Hangover symptoms typically begin when your blood alcohol drops significantly and is at or near zero. They're usually in full effect the morning after a night of heavy drinking. Depending on what you drank and how much

you drank, you may notice: Fatigue, Thirst, Headaches and muscle aches, Nausea, vomiting or stomach pain, Poor or decreased sleep, Sensitivity to light and sound, Dizziness or a sense of the room spinning, Rapid heartbeat, Bloodshot eyes, Shakiness, Decreased ability to concentrate and Mood disturbances, such as depression, anxiety and irritability.
Complications
When you have a hangover, you're likely to experience problems with your: Memory, Concentration, Dexterity, Visual-spatial skills, or your ability to accurately perceive how objects you're looking at relate to each other in space around you. Not surprisingly, this temporary dulling of your abilities increases your risk of a number of problems at work, including: Trouble completing your tasks, Criticism from a supervisor, Conflict with co-workers, Falling asleep on the job, Workplace injuries.
Treatments Diabetes, what do I do now?
Time is the only sure cure for a hangover. Here are a few things you can do to help yourself feel better in the meantime: Fill your water bottle. Sip water or fruit juice to prevent dehydration. Have a snack. Bland foods, such as toast and crackers, may boost your blood sugar and settle your stomach. Take a pain reliever. A small dose of an over-the-counter pain reliever may ease your headache. Go back to bed. If you sleep long enough, your hangover may be gone when you awaken.
Alternative medicine
From stimulating your scalp with hair-pulling to drinking sauerkraut juice, alternative remedies for hangovers abound. A few small studies have identified natural remedies that may improve hangover symptoms. These study results haven't been duplicated, however, and large, controlled trials are needed to learn more about the safety

This supplement, also called Opuntia ficusindica (OFI), may reduce inflammatory response in the body. OFI helped improve nausea, dry mouth and poor appetite associated with hangover. Borage. This supplement, derived from the borage plant, may help reduce the severity of hangover symptoms including headache, laziness and tiredness. Yeast-based preparations. One study found that a tablet containing 250 milligrams (mg) of dried yeast — along with 0.5 mg each of thiamin (vitamin B-1), pyridoxine (vitamin B-6) and riboflavin (vitamin B-2) — improved discomfort, restlessness and impatience in people with a hangover. The City Limits plays host to Colum Mc Donnell this Saturday. Doors are 9pm and admission is €15. As well as his numerous appearances in comedy shows on Irish Television (The Republic of Telly, The Podge & Rodge Show and The Savage Eye), Colum is a festival regular in Ireland and in many other parts of the world, including Edinburgh, Melbourne and Adelaide. He has also appeared on The Paramount Comedy Channels 'The World Stands Up' show. The prestigious invitation only stand up show showcasing the cream of stand up comedians from around the globe Colum also supported Scotland's newest comedy star Kevin Bridges on his UK and Ireland tour. Red Hot Chili Peppers have confirmed a date at Croke Park next year. The band, who just released their 10th album I'm With You in August will play the famous stadium on Wednesday 26th June - 20 years since their Irish debut at the now defunct SFW venue off Dorset Street. The Chili Peppers have always enjoyed an enthusiastic relationship with Irish fans. Their 2004 Phoenix Park performance set an Irish record for the highest concert attendance ever, a staggering 110,000. Tickets (prices not yet available) are on sale from Friday 4th November at 8am via your usual outlets. While it may seem that Noel Gallagher wants nothing to do with an Oasis reunion, his younger brother Liam is leaving the door slightly ajar. Liam has said that there is a chance that the band will get together once more for a 20th year anniversary of their landmark album What's The Story (Morning Glory), stating that the pair will have mended their feud by then. Liam told Canadian TV: "...I'm definitely up for doing a tour. I don't think me and him will ever be in a full-on band again though, that's done". Liam continued further: "A tour for the 2015 and I think, by then, three years, I will have grown up a bit by then and so will he." They say time heals all wounds, but how many lifetimes would it take to get the Gallagher brothers back on speaking terms? A new Amy Winehouse album is to be released just four months after the singer's death. Lioness: Hidden Treasures will comprise 12 tracks of previously unreleased material including two new songs. The album has been assembled by Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, the two producers she collaborated most closely with. The album, which is due for release on December 5, will also feature alternative versions of existing songs. The singer's father, Mitch Winehouse, spoke
about the news: "I spent so much time chasing after Amy, telling her off that I never realised what a true genius she was. It wasn't until I sat down with the rest of the family and listened to this album that I fully appreciated the breadth of Amy's talent, from jazz standards to hip-hop songs, it really took my breath away. "Halftime, I'd never heard before, is just incredibly beautiful. If the family had felt that this album wasn't up to the standard of Frank and Back to Black we would never have agreed to release it and we believe it will stand as a fitting tribute to Amy's musical legacy." Finally, Bill Murray has joined Charlie Sheen in the cast of Roman Coppola's new movie, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III. Two of TV’s greatest men!! Medium actress Patricia Arquette and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World star Mary Elizabeth Winstead have also been added to the cast list. The film will also reunite Murray with Jason Schwartzman, his co-star in Wes Anderson's 1998 film Rushmore. Inside the Mind of Charlie Swan III is about a successful graphic designer whose career takes a nosedive when his girlfriend leaves him. Roman Coppola, Francis Ford Coppola's son, has previously worked as an assistant director on The Darjeeling Limited and The Life Aquatic. He also worked on his sister Sofia Coppola's films Marie Antoinette and The Virgin Suicides.
Home & G arden (While there is still time to plant bulbs for spring flowering. It might not be any harm to consider wallflowers. They can add a lot of colour to your garden in late spring. As they flower the same time as tulips. a combination is worth considering. As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.)
Flower Garden Protect new evergreens and coniers with windbreak screens in exposed gardens. Mulch slightly tender shrubs such as romneya, solanum and ceratostigma wdh bark or leaves. Stratify rose hips in sand, and expose to frost all winter: rub seeds free in spring and sow in pots. Plant tulips in potting compost in drained pots, and keep dark and cool until shoots emerge. Move colchicums and autumn crocus while in full bloom. Mulch hellebores with compost and protect against slugs. In cold gardens tie up red hot poker leaves to protect crowns.
Kitchen Garden Clear away yellow leaves from brassicas such as Brussels sprouts, and firm in or earth up in exposed gardens. Remove the top nets from fruit cages in case of snow. If bad weather threatens, harvest quinces - best left hanging as store to continue ripening. Leave a shallow trench around stony ground when digging, and during spring cultivation. Dig alternate rows of maincrop potatoes if time presses , and throw loosened soil as protection over those remaining. Sideshoots on trained fruit, shortened to five leaves
in summer, need to be further pruned to two buds. Plant blackcurrants in well-manured ground, deeper than they grew before, and prune to 15cm (6in) high.
Lawns & Hedges Edge up lawns, tidy and assess any repairs necessary to the turf.
Greenhouse Insulate the inside of the greenhouse with fleece or bubble polythene. Pot up weak dahlia tubers, and keep slightly moist and cool under glass until January.
Water Garden Check pond heaters are working efficiently.
In General Start checking fruit, vegetables and bulbs in store one routine basis, and remove any that are rotting. Empty and remove plant saucers from outdoor pots to avoid watetlogging roots. Sharpen and set secateurs, loppens and saws ready for winter pruning

Santa Swim comes to Cork’s Mayfield Sport and Leisure Centre
The 2011 ‘Santa Swim’ in aid The Carers Association and St. Michael’s House, is set to take place on November 12th and 13th in swimming pools nationwide, including Cork at Mayfield Sport and Leisure Centre. In a bid to raise much needed funds for educational and sporting equipment for St.Michael’s House and support The Carers Association’s respite hours, outreach services and National Care Line, relay groups across the county are teaming up to have a fun swim and raise funds for the two charities. St. Michael’s House is Ireland’s largest provider of community-based services for people with an intellectual disability. The Carers Association supports voluntary family carers of loved-ones who are elderly, seriously ill, people with disabilities and children with special needs. “We are delighted to be working with St. Michael’s House on the third Santa Swim event. We urge everyone in Cork to get involved in what is a fun event while raising much needed funds for The Carers Association and St. Michaels House” said Emma Murphy, Fundraising Manager of The Carers Association The ‘Santa Swim’ was launched recently in the National Aquatic Centre by Dublin footballers past and present, representatives of Swim Ireland, Olympic Swimmer Aisling Cooney, and World University Games Participant Niall Wynn, and they will be getting teams to swim the equivalent of the English Channel throughout November. GAA legend Mick O’Dwyer and Kerry county players Ger Power and John O’Keeffe will be bringing together a team of 15 Kerry
players from the famous 70’s team to swim also. Both charities are urging individuals, families, friends and clubs of Cork to get involved in the event which takes place at Cork’s Mayfield Sport and Leisure Centre on November 12th and 13th in Cork. The main sponsors of the Santa Swim 2011 are Unicare and Doc Morris Pharmacy. You can register for the event now by emailing fundraising@smh.ie. Further information on Santa Swim 2011 as well as a full list of pools and events is available at www.santaswim.ie.

The legal blood alcohol limit will be reduced from 80mg to 50mg per 100ml of blood while professional drivers and learner drivers will face a ‘virtually zero’ rate of 20mg per 100ml of blood. Fionnuala Sheehan, drinkaware.ie Chief Executive said, “With the arrival of the new lower drink-driving limits, it
has never been more important to remember the morning after. The reality is that many of us still do not think about what we drank the night before when we get in the car the following morning. It takes your body about an hour to get rid of one standard drink. That’s one hour for a half a pint, or a small glass of wine, or a pub measure of spirits. The secret to sobering up is time – no amount of coffee, energy drinks, cold showers or breakfast rolls will speed up the process. You might feel better afterwards, but that doesn’t mean you’re fit to drive. The message from drinkaware.ie is to take responsibility for your drinking, do the maths the morning after and if you think that you are not ok to drive, then

College Corinthians AFC Schoolboys Section
Under 13 Ballincollig 0 Corinthian Boys 8
This was an awesome performance from Corinthians. With one of the meanest defences in the Premier Division, conceding just two goals in last seven league games, their midfield and strikers are showing a much greater level of consistency, and it looks as if its all coming together at right time with the next round of the National Cup around the corner. Goals by Arseni Lamonov, Eoin Murphy, Dylan Ward, Alex Chandler and a hatrick by David O'Sullivan was inspired by another high tempo game coupled with good accurate passing that kept a strong Ballincollig side under constant pressure. There were other good performances from Eoin Davis, Stephen Fox, John Weir and Mathew McAuliffe. The defensive unit, marshelled by James O'Donovan, of Alex Chandler, Ciaran Couch, James Holland and Christian Begley (GK) can take great pride in the quality of their support play and another clean sheet.
Under 14 Corinthian Boys Avondale
A superb performance by the Corinthians Premier team who remain unbeaten in the league. We opened the scoring after 10 minutes when a cross by Dean Swords found David Dalton who rose to head into the net. After 22 minutes David O Regan found Colin O Brien whose shot flew past the keeper into the top corner from 25 yards for the goal of the game. On 29 minutes David O Regan won the ball inside his own half his pass found David Dalton whose cross broke to Ross Welch who rifled past the keeper
6 min later a free kick from Dean Swords found David Dalton, whose first shot was blocked by the Avondale keeper only to break back to David who scored his second leaving the half time score 4-0 14 minutes into the second half Harry Shanahan was brought down inside the box, a penalty was awarded and Colin O Brien scored his second of the game with a superb strike. 3 minutes later Bryan Cotter ran down the right wing, his cross was flicked on by Gavin Holland to an on rushing Harry Shanahan to make it 6-0. David Lynch, Jack Murray, Keenan O Flynn, Ross Welch were impressive A great result heading into the National Cup game away to Carrigtwohill next Sunday. Stephen Jermyn, Jack Murray, David O Regan, Mark O Leary, (David Burke 45mins) Sean Desmond, (Alex O Driscoll 45mins) David Lynch, Ross Welch, (Keenan O Flynn HT) Bryan Cotter, Dean Swords, Colin O Brien, (Gavin Holland 50mins) David Dalton
Watergrasshill 1 Corinthian Boys A 5 (Mikey O Doherty 3 ; Mark O Regan 2 )
A second half hat trick by substitute Mikey O Doherty and 2 from Mark O Regan ensured the 3pts for Corinthians, after a poor first half. Within 5 minutes of the start Watergrasshill took the lead after Cors defenced failed to cut out a cross to the unmarked Watergrasshill striker. Playing against the wind on a heavy pitch ,Corinthians struggled to get any foothold of the game.Half time changes of inroducing Mikey O Doherty and switching David Smith to midfield gave Cors the incentive to push on and change the game coming out easy winners in the end. Colm Power, David Smith and O Doherty played well for Cors.
Douglas Hall FC by Finbarr Buckley Umbro U-12 Division Five Douglas Hall B 6; Carrigaline Utd. A 0
Shane Downey (3), Stephen Rumley (2) & Brian Rumley shared the goals in a superb team effort. David Sahm, David Malone, Sean McCabe & Mark O’Connell were outstanding throughout.
Umbro U-13 Division One Douglas Hall 1; Mayfield Utd. 4
United clinched the points in the battle of the top two with two goals inside the opening ten minutes. The visitors added a third early in the second-half before Sean Grace reduced arrears to give the Hall an opportunity of getting back into the contest. Mark Gallagher & Ryan Hunter went close for the home team only for the visitors to score a fourth near the finish.
Umbro U-15 Division One Douglas Hall 0 ; Corinthian Boys 2
A under strength Hall side put up a brave performance against their closest rivals without ever looking like breaking down the visitors defence. Diermuid O'Mahoney and Cian Marnane put in fine performances at the back, limiting their opponents to a goal in each half.
Umbro U-16 Premier Douglas Hall 0; Lakewood Ath. 1
The visitors secured the points with the only goal of the match in an even contest. Goalkeeper Gary Hartnett, defenders Ben Collins & David O’Connor, striker Paul Lehane & sub Stephen Cronin impressed for the Hall.
Umbro U-16 Division Three Douglas Hall A 2; Churchvilla 1
Liam Power & Pat Hickey’s emerging team continued their remarkable unbeaten run with a first-half penalty from Paul Burke & a fine strike by Evan O’Reilly early in the secondhalf. Adam Gould in the middle & James O’Donovan at full-back ialong with keeper Andrew Cullinane shone for the winners.
Daly Industrial Supplies U-17 League 1A Crosshaven 3; Douglas Hall 2
Despite being two down at the break, Daniel Savage pulled one back from a penalty and Craig Madden levelled on 75 minutes following a neat back pass by Savage. The hosts scored what proved to be the winner two minutes later despite Alex Finglas having a shot coming back off the crossbar and Colin Downey going close with the keeper beaten.
Umbro FAI Youth Cup – 2ND Rd. Passage 4; Douglas Hall 0
The Hall were no match for a fluent home side who scored four without reply. Defender David Sheehan & subs Eoin Conroy & Danny Cashin were the pick for the visitors. Beamish Stout Senior Premier Division Douglas Hall 1; Avondale Utd. 4 In an absorbing top-of-the-table contest, which produced plenty of incident and five goals in slippery underfoot conditions, Simon McGarry gave the Hall the lead on twenty minutes before Mark O’Sullivan equalized for the Dales from the penalty spot three minutes later. The controversial sending off of Hall defender Garry Prout early in the second-half for a second book able offence swung the match in the visitors favour, as three secondhalf goals consigned the home team to a second home defeat of the season.

Grangevale AFC
G.A.A. FOCUS
AUL 1A Grangevale 4– Donoughmore 3
Snippets from the Local and National Scene
Having beaten the same opposition 3-0 away from home only three weeks ago, The Vale had to battle hard to get the 3 points on offer in Grangevale Park on Sunday morning. In fact, there were six changes to the starting eleven that began the previous encounter for various reasons. Paul O’Halloran was between the sticks and Diarmuid O’Neill, Ross Farrell, Keith O’Callaghan and John O’Connell formed the defensive quartet. Ken O’Connor, John Harris, Colin Murphy and Dave O’Connor made up the midfield and Adam Cann was partnered up front by Eric Maher. The visitors got the perfect start when they were awarded a penalty after only 6 minutes, O’Halloran saved but the striker was quick to score at the second attempt. Grangevale to their credit didn’t panic and were very unlucky when Cann and O’Callaghan both came close with headed efforts. Unfortunately, it was Donoughmore who scored again on 28 minutes putting them 2-0 ahead against the run
of play. The lads kept trying and their efforts were rewarded in the 36th minute when in-form Cann scored from close range and the crowd wondered if Grangevale could possibly come from behind and win for the first time this season. The second half was only 4 minutes old when Harris’s shot/cross gave the lads the equaliser they deserved. The goal of the game came in the 57th minute when Eric Maher controlled, turned and struck an awesome shot that gave the Donoughmore keeper no chance. Cann got his second and The Vale’s fourth in the 70th minute with a bullet header from a well delivered O’Connor corner. The visitors did make for a nervous final 2/3 minutes when they were awarded another penalty which made the scoreline 4-3, but thankfully, Grangevale hung on and took the points. Next Sunday morning, the lads are at home to Rathcoole Rovers, kick-off 10.45 at Grangvale Park.

By Pat Harrington Aidan Walsh is going to Australia with the Irish International Rules team. This man is a member of the Duhallow under 21 squad but did not play in the last round of the championship. The county board in its wisdom cancelled the county final in order to accommodate Mr. Walsh. That to me makes no sense whatsoever. Everyone is aware of what a significant player he is but the board should surely have shown some respect for the opposition Midleton as well.
Management-Merry-GoRound
There has never in my memory been a year with so many changes on the intercounty management scene. Jimmy Barry Murphy (Cork), Michael Ryan (Waterford), Davy Fitzgerald (Clare), Ollie Behan (Offaly), Teddy McCarthy (Laois), Jerry Wallace (Antrim) and Galway yet to be announced. There are only five rounds in Division 1 hurling this year. Cork have three games at home against Tipperary, Galway and Kilkenny; very attractive encounters for the Cork public. Jimmy Barry Murphy picked his panel very early. One would expect this is to facilitate the squad for training in the gym. A very sensible idea
Level 1 Coaching
I have attended a number of coaching courses down through the years. When it was mentioned to me that there was a course to be held in my own club on the weekend of October 22nd my first reaction was ‘why bother’, as I had done all this before. However I did attend and to be honest I found it to be very interesting and informative. It encompassed the fun aspect and in my view tends to make the whole scenario more attractive and more interesting; particularly to the younger lads whose attention it is so difficult to hold. One very good idea for those starting is to use a plastic ball about three times the size of a tennis ball but similar in weight. The benefit derived from this is that the child should be able to strike the ball further and I’m sure this would be more enjoyable for 6 and 7 year olds. I must say ’well done’ to the course co-ordinator Brendan O’Driscoll.
The Coach
Everybody who wishes to take on a coaching role will not be all of equal standard. On occasion a head coach comes in and he takes over, not realising that there are others who are willing, able and eager to coach. This situation is far from ideal. I for one have been on both sides of the fence, i.e. being excluded from the role in which I wanted to become involved, and I excluding people from participating as a coach. My motto now is ‘never turn away help’. Of course
some guidance may be needed. I am specifically talking here about coaching at the younger age groups.
A Memorable Day
On October 23rd. I attended my first county final of 2011 – Mayfield vs. Charleville (junior A). As I travelled down Frankfield the rain was flowing down the road like a swollen river. On the way into the game I met a young boy coming from Páirc Uí Rinn, his face painted red/white and looking forlorn and dejected.. This lad was from Ballygarvan who had been defeated in the under 21 B grade county final. Behind me I heard a thud as a young lad from Charleville was striking the ball against a wall on the Boreenmanna Road and controlling it with great skill.
Playing Conditions
Was it really necessary to play the game on such an awful day? Heavy rain, gusting winds and poor underfoot conditions. At one point the Mayfield corner forward gave one magnificent flick with his foot which would have looked good at Old Trafford. This was not a day to be caught in possession as immediately the player was surrounded by three or four opponents and conceded a free for overcarrying. The eyes of the Charleville mentors were looking upwards to the skies as their team drove seven balls wide in the opening half. A water bottle is flung at a hording as a great opportunity for a goal is spurned by the North Cork side. In the second half the Charleville supporters had raised clenched fists as they clearly appeared to be potential victors. As the game proceeded and tensions mounted both sets of subs were out of the dugouts urging on their respective teams. The linesmen were recipients of some choice words over disputed sideline balls. The game ended in a draw with great credit to both sides.
Supporters
There is one at every game and this encounter was no exception. I refer of course to the loudmouth who addressed the mentors of the opposite team as plugs. He had unkind words for everyone in sight; the referee, his own team and members of the opposition. The language was choice. I wondered if he was one of those one-daywonders who just turn up on county final day. I doubt if I would look forward to meeting this guy in the club following a county final defeat.
