my god why is the grass not cut? It would improve the look of the park so much, is there a local group who clean the place I certainly would be glad to help out ,and just one last moan, what are our youth coming to ? I also noticed another bus shelter smashed up in the Grange area the second in 6 months...maybe if their parents had to pay for the damage and take it from their pocket money they would cop on. Jerry Buttimer TD

Clinic on future of Cork Airport Cork South Central Fine Gael TD Jerry Buttimer has announced that he will hold a special clinic on the future of Cork Airport. The clinic will take place in Deputy Buttimer’s constituency office at 4a Glasheen Road, Cork on Monday 14 November 2011 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Deputy Buttimer said “the idea behind the clinic is to listen to people’s concerns and to hear their ideas on the best ways to develop and grow the operation of the airport. The future of Cork Airport is vital to the development of the city, county and entire region. “Recently the Minister for Transport commissioned a report on the future of Cork Airport, this is currently being prepared. Because of the importance of this process I commenced a series of meeting on this issue. Already I have met with the Minister, the consultants, Booz & Company, and some airport employees. As I embark on the next phase of this process I would like to hear the views of the public, business groups and any other group interested in the future of Cork Airport. “I welcome the fact that Minister Varadkar is prepared to tackle the half-way house arrangement which has been in place since 2004. The previous Government put decisions on the future of Cork Airport on the long finger; it has now come to a critical stage where the airport needs a clear business plan. “It is important that we maximise local input in the process, ensuring local concerns are heard and listened to. I invite any interested individuals, community groups and businesses to meet with me at my clinic on the future of Cork Airport to discuss these important developments.”

Juggling it all Early in 1994, I gave my birth to my first son. At the time I was the Personnel Manager for a roofers’ merchant company in London. I loved my job and there was no question that I was going back to work after my baby was born. I was so proud being a working mother because I was the 90’s woman; I had it all. I subscribed fully to the ethos of She magazine whose motto was Juggling It All and urged women like me, ‘Yes you can have your cake and eat too’ and ‘Yes your children do know you’re their mother even though they spend less of their waking hours with you than they do with their child minder’ because ‘It is vitally important for your self esteem that you have a career’ and ‘It is important that your children see that you have a life other than them’. But after being back at work a few months, the truth was although I had my feet firmly planted in both worlds, I felt I had half of each and it added up to nothing. In a male dominated work place, I was expected, at very short notice, to attend meetings in Bristol at 4pm which made it impossible for me to get back up to London for 6pm to collect my son. My childminder was fantastic but she had me warned from the beginning that if I arrived so much as a minute past 6pm, she would leave my son out on the doorstep. I didn’t think she’d really do it but she was so moody I didn’t want to take the chance. Eventually I plucked up the courage to challenge the timings of these

meetings and make them more childfriendly but I discovered in other ways being a full time working mother is hard. I no longer had the luxury of working late to meet deadlines or to just catch up; I couldn’t just head to the pub with the rest of the office for the Friday night booze up. Neither was I spending any time with my son who slept in the car all the way home and again once he had his dinner. I was miserable. Something had to give but to give up work was to admit failure so I plugged on. When my son was 18 months old salvation came. The company decided to relocate its headquarters to Cambridge, a two hour commute which even I had to admit was ridiculous. Manfully, I accepted redundancy but inside I was jumping for joy: the decision was made for me. I still work but I do it on a part time basis now. And as for the editor of She magazine, I read in a newspaper some years ago that she had a nervous breakdown from juggling it all.

Gender key to electoral reform Gender balance has always been central to Labour Party policy and was included in our election manifesto earlier this year. In fact, the Labour Party tabled a Bill in 2009 outlining various proposals that could be put in place to encourage and foster the role of women in political life. A commitment was also given in the Programme for Government to increasing the number of women in politics so I am therefore delighted to learn from Minister Hogan that these proposals will be implemented. These changes include a cut in funding from the State to political parties that do not have 30% female and 30% male candidates at the next general election. After 7 years this will increase to 40% and while it only applies to general elections, this change of culture will hopefully extend to local elections on a voluntary basis within each political party. The Labour Party is committed to creating a more transparent and equal political system and the amendments to this Bill reflect many of the changes Labour have been advocating for many years.. Further reforms are alos on the way, under the General Scheme of the Electoral (Amendment) (Political Funding) Bill 2011 provisions have also been made to restrict political donations and the threshold for declaring political donations. This is to be warmly welcomed as I, along with the Labour Party have been advocating for such change for years. This illustrates the commitment that the Labour Party has to political reform and to restoring public confidence in the political system. While the Bill is currently being drafted, the Minister has published the General Scheme and he is welcoming public input into its content. It is anticipated that the Bill will published in the current Dáil term and I look forward to its implementation.

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn

Christine McCarthy is a native New Yorker. Her great grandmother came from Cork and arrived with a note pinned to her chest from Ellis Island. She would certainly be very proud of her descendants today, especially her great granddaughter! Christine is in the middle of writing a grant to the National Science Foundation to make a film and start a website on developments arising from the sequencing of the proteome. The proteome is the entirety of world protein. New cures and technological breakthroughs are occurring daily due to the sequencing of the genome and proteome. She hopes to create a not-for-profit media company, Watercress Media, that will inform the public about discoveries as they occur. She likes to write and read poetry in her spare time. It helps her stay grounded and reflective about what is happening in the world of science and society in general. Also, she hopes to publish a book of poetry called Observances. She has had an interest in poetry since high school and was admitted to Phillips Andover Academy because of her strength in reading English poetry. A River of People There is a river of people in my mind. They drive past at an enormous clip. Sometimes, they park beside me and I watch their dream. I wake up suddenly heartpounding, sweating from the spoon that does not fit or the Queen of Spades in my grandmother’s hand. My cat is there beside me and as she walks over my hair turns on the radio to the same tune each morning, a horn riff, her little paw pressing the button to get a can of Fancy feast, each day starts again. I walk to the river as it flows past and take comfort in the fleet of taxis, the man with the turban, the men of color that ferry us from place to place. I miss him. a friend, a sunflower, a world away. The river flows to the sea, he is there too.

terest and customer knowledge in the ‘Skecher’ products. ‘It’s refreshing to see that customers are already aware of the benefits of lifestyle footwear. Ask Dr. Tim by Dr Tim Jaeger DC, ROHP, RNCP

Doctor of Chiropractic - Registered Nutritional Consultant Practitioner

Is Vitamin D the Nutrient of the Decade? You Decide! In January 2011, the Irish Medical Times discussed a re-emergence of rickets, and that possibly over 50% of apparently healthy Irish adults have vitamin D insufficiency. Vitamin D is naturally produced in the human body by interaction of the sun's UVB rays with cholesterol in the skin. In Ireland from October to March, very little vitamin D is produced because almost no UVB is available. Some of the greatest proven benefits of maintaining optimal levels of vitamin D are a reduced risk of: cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression, infectious diseases, dental cavities, autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, and certain cancers such as breast, colon, ovarian and prostate. Even athletic performance can be improved. A 2011 peer-reviewed study done in the journal Anticancer Research, found that an intake of 1,100 to 4,000 IU of vitamin D daily and a blood serum concentration of 25-hydroxyvitamin D in the range of 60 - 80 ng/ml (150 - 200 nmol/L) is required to reduce cancer risk. This same study showed that intakes as high as 40,000 IU daily are unlikely to result in vitamin D toxicity, and that no daily

supplemental levels of 10,000 IU or less produced toxicity. Ask your family doctor for a blood serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D test, and have levels monitored regularly - perhaps two or three times a year, especially in the late fall, winter and early spring when sunshine is weakest. What are the optimal vitamin D serum levels? This is debated, but suffice it to say that most peer-reviewed research today shows that a serum level in the range of 50 - 80 ng/ml (125 - 200 nmol/L) provides the strongest benefits. See Mercola.com/ vitaminD, SunArc.org and VitaminDCouncil.org. The best sources of vitamin D are sunlight (10-minutes of daily skin exposure a few days of the week), wild-caught fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines, and UVB-exposed mushrooms. If you choose to add a vitamin D supplement, be careful that it is not in a base of omega-6 oils, nor containing artificial sweeteners such as aspartame. Arthritis Arthritis is inflammation of one or more of your joints, such as one or both knees or wrists, or a part of your spinal column. The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Joint pain and stiffness are the main symptoms of arthritis.

Symptoms

The most common signs and symptoms of arthritis involve the joints. Depending on the type of arthritis you have, your joint symptoms may include: Pain Stiffness Swelling Redness Decreased range of motion

Causes

The pain associated with arthritis is caused by joint damage. Joints are How do I handle mum’s Alzheimer’s?

made up of the following parts: Cartilage. A hard, but slick, coating on the ends of bones, cartilage allows bones of the joint to slide smoothly over each other. Joint capsule. This tough membrane encloses all the joint parts. Synovium. This thin membrane lines the joint capsule and secretes synovial fluid, which lubricates the joint. How arthritis damages joints The two main types of arthritis damage joints in different ways. Osteoarthritis. In osteoarthritis, wearand-tear damage to cartilage can result in bone grinding directly on bone, which causes pain and restricted movement. This wear and tear can occur over many years, or it can be hastened by a joint injury or infection. Rheumatoid arthritis. In rheumatoid arthritis, the body's immune system attacks joints and inflames the synovium, causing swelling, redness and pain. The disease can eventually destroy cartilage and bone within the Diabetes, what do I do now?

joint.

Treatments

Arthritis treatment focuses on relieving symptoms and improving joint function. You may need to try several different treatments, or combinations of treatments, before you determine what works best for you. Medications The medications used to treat arthritis vary, depending on the type of arthritis. Commonly used arthritis medications include: Analgesics, Counterirritants, Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), Biologics and Corticosteroids.

Therapy

Physical therapy can be helpful for some types of arthritis. Exercises can improve range of motion and strengthen the muscles surrounding joints. In some cases, splints or braces may be warranted.

Surgery

We can help you with any health

If more-conservative measures don't help, your doctor may suggest surgery.

Lifestyle remedies

Weight loss. If you're obese, losing weight will reduce the stress on your weight-bearing joints. This may increase your mobility and limit future joint injury. Exercise. Regular exercise can help keep your joints flexible. Swimming or water aerobics is often a good choice because the buoyancy of the water reduces stress on weight-bearing joints. Heat and cold. Heating pads or ice packs may help relieve arthritis pain. Assistive devices. Using canes, walkers, raised toilet seats and other assistive devices can help protect your joints and improve your ability to perform daily tasks. This event is in aid of Marymount Hospice and is taking place on 25/26 of November. The speakathon will take place in Marymount's new home in Bishopstown. Please check out our website, www. speakupformarymount.ie To date we have had great support for this event from business owners connected to the Enterprise Hub, a networking and business support group. Their members have agreed to take up the speaking hours 3am-4am, 4am5am, 6am-7am. Smarttech.ie have sponsored the website and the making of the video. Toastmaster clubs, such as Bishopstown Toastmasters, Blarney Toastmaster, Powdermills, Apple Toastmasters, CorkLeeside Toastmasters, Project Management Toastmasters to name just a few who have confirmed todate to supportMarymount. We will have a GAA hour of speakers lead by the great Jimmy Barry Mur-

phy. We have a commitment from the students Mount Mercy College and will be seeking the support of other schools and colleges. Our aim is to recruit 150 speakers with each speaker to raise €100 giving Marymount €15,000. We are also seeking companies to sponsor each hour for €400 which would bring our total for Marymount to €24,000. Donations to Marymount are down as they are with all charities. The demand for the outstanding care, compassion and dignity which Marymount is all about, is up, sadly. The care they give is 24 hours per day, every day of the year. Home & G arden (There is a wide variety of Christmas gifts for gardeners on display at the moment, all well worth taking a look at. As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.)

Flower Garden

Finish taking hardwood cuttings for rooting outdoors while the soil is still relatively warm. Finish cutting back, tidying and mulching flower borders. Mulch camellias with straw to prevent roots from freezing in cold gardens.

Kitchen Garden

Mulch hardy late leaf crops such as spinach with straw, to prevent soil splashes. Try to complete digging on heavy soils to take advantage of frosts. Spray dormant fruit trees with winter wash to kill pests (but also kills beneficial insects); cover green plants nearby first. In mild gardens sow more hardy broad beans and roundseeded peas, and cover with cloches. Hoe between winter crops during dry weather.

Lawns & Hedges

Keep lawns clear of fallen leaves rake them up or collect with a rotary mower for stacking.

Greenhouse

Take chrysanthemum cuttings in a propagator if stools start producing shoots. Check stored geraniums, fuchsias and chrysanthemums, and if dry water lightly. Water indoor azaleas well, plunging if necessary in a bucket. In unheated house, make an extra insulated area for cuttings and tender plants. Dig greenhouse borders and manure or compost for early crops. Check stored corms and tubers for early signs of rot.

POWERFLUSH Save up to 30% on your heating bills! Any of these can mean rust, limescale or black sludge in your heating system: • Dirty water when bleeding rads • Rads need frequent bleeding • Partly warm rads or rads slow to warm up • Irritating boiler noise POWERFLUSH can restore circulation & efficiency by removing these & treating the rads to prevent future problems.

Blackrock / Mahon Community Notice Board New Local Phone Number for Care & Repair

Age Action has announced that due to the continued expansion of the Care & Repair programme in Cork there is a now a local phone number, 0214536554, which older people can call to arrange to have jobs done around their homes free of charge. Age Action’s Care & Repair service uses a pool of trustworthy volunteer handypersons to carry out odd-jobs and DIY work for older people who find it difficult to do these jobs themselves. Some of the jobs that our volunteers can do include changing light bulbs, minor painting and decorating, hanging curtains, minor gardening, minor carpentry and installing smoke alarms. The service is free; clients only pay for the materials used. For bigger jobs that are beyond the scope of the volunteers, Age Action maintains a register of reliable and honest tradespersons whose contact details can be provided. As well as all of the main trades such as plumbers, electricians, builders etc, they have details for people who service boilers, clean chimneys, clean gutters and many other useful services. Regular social visits to older people can also be arranged. John O Mahony, Care & Repair Development Officer, says "I'm delighted that we now have a local Care & Repair phone number in Cork. This will make it quicker and easier for people to access our services and I would ask anybody who thinks that we might be able to help them around the house to contact me on 021-4536554. I would be happy to chat to people about how we can assist them."

Age Action is Ireland’s leading charity for older people. They believe that Ireland should be the best place in which to grow older. They work to fight discrimination, promote positive ageing and improve policies and services for all older people. Phone: 021-4536554

Opel Astra GTC Set To Rock Mid-Size Coupé Class as Irish Launch Date Approaches • • • •

Stunning design: Sports coupé with dramatic proportions and road planted stance Dramatic design starting from €22,995 Driver-focused chassis layout derived from Insignia OPC Opel’s mid-size coupé challenger available to order from this December

December 2011 will see the arrival of the Opel Astra GTC in Opel dealerships; a sports coupé which will lay down the gauntlet to the mid-size coupé segment with a heady mix of dynamic excellence, dramatic design features and competitive pricing. Closely based on last year’s stunning GTC Paris concept, the production Opel Astra GTC enters the Irish market priced from €22,995. But even in entry-level trim, the Astra GTC adopts the sophisticated front suspension from the Insignia OPC, featuring Opel’s HiPerStrut (High Performance Strut), combined with the clever Watt’s link rear axle for unmatched stability and handling precision. The third body style to come off the new Astra’s Delta platform (following the Hatch and last year’s Sports Tourer), the only elements the GTC shares with its siblings are door handles and the roof aerial – even the wheelbase and tracks are different. Mark Adams, Opel’s Vice President of Design, has aimed to create a car that looks like it has been plucked from the class above, with its low, wide stance and simple, yet rakish lines. But don’t be fooled: the GTC’s ‘straight-from-concept’ looks shroud a cabin that’s roomy and comfortable enough to accommodate four adults and their luggage. So while the GTC will appeal to Irish car enthusiasts, its practicality will ensure that it accounts for a significant portion of all Astra sales when it arrives in Ireland this December. “The Astra GTC is the sporty member of the Opel family,” says KarlFriedrich Stracke, Chief Executive Officer of Opel. “It has been designed and engineered in our facilities in Rüsselsheim to be a highly desirable sports coupé with invigorating driving performance while remaining affordable, roomy and flexible. We’re convinced that it will bring a breath of fresh air into the mid-size coupé segment.” High-tech front and rear suspension Right from the start of the Astra GTC’s development the target was to deliver a focused and driver-orientated feel to the car. As a result, signifi-

cant changes were made to the front suspension, including the adoption of Opel’s HiPerStrut (High Performance Strut) used on the 325PS Insignia OPC. The HiPerStrut uses the existing attachment points from the regular Astra, and has a reduced kingpin inclination and a shorter spindle length. This reduces levels of torque-steer, improves grip – and therefore cornering power – while also enhancing steering precision and feedback. At the rear, the GTC continues to use the compound crank with a Watt’s link that has been employed with such success on the Astra Hatch and Sports Tourer. This unique and innovative combination is far more compact and light weight than a multi-link set up, while providing excellent control and stability, as well as excellent noise insulation. Compared with the Astra Hatch, the GTC’s ride height has been lowered by 15mm, while the wheelbase has grown by 10mm, from 2685mm to 2695mm. Both tracks are wider, too, at 1584mm (+ 40mm) front and 1588mm (+ 30mm) rear. This allows the option of larger rims (up to 20inch), as well as improving stability. Enhancing the GTC’s chassis still further is the option of Opel’s FlexRide adaptive damping. FlexRide automatically adapts to prevailing road surfaces and driving styles, providing drivers with fully optimised handling, even in the event of an emergency situation. In addition, FlexRide offers drivers a choice of three settings – Standard, Tour or Sport - which will change the car’s character on demand at the push of a button. Four engine line-up, with high output unit for OPC to follow in 2012 The Astra GTC can be ordered initially with a choice of four engines – three petrol’s and one diesel, with two 1.7 CDTi engines to follow in January 2012. With 165PS, the 2.0 CDTi is an upgraded version of the diesel that’s fitted to some models in the Insignia and Astra ranges. All engines feature sixspeed transmission and Start/Stop as standard, maximising economy and

performance. Delivering 380Nm of torque (including overboost function) the 2.0 CDTi engine provides excellent mid-range acceleration for the GTC, combined with a 0-100 km/h time of 8.9 seconds and a top speed of 210 km/h. That torque also allows the GTC a relaxed cruising gait, meaning a combined fuel consumption of just 4.9 litres per 100 km and C02 emissions of just 129g/km. It also gives drivers a range potential in excess of 1,100 km. Start/Stop and a six-speed gearbox are also standard on both versions of the 1.4-litre Turbo petrol engine. With either 120PS or 140PS, the 1.4T

achieves a combined fuel consumption of 5.9 litres per 100 km. With C02 emissions of only 139g/km, both 1.4-litre petrol engines are eligible for tax band B – with road tax of just €156 p.a. Despite this, each engine still delivers crisp performance with maximum torque of 200Nm delivered between 1850-4200rpm. The most powerful engine in the range is the 1.6-litre Turbo, which produces 180PS and allows the GTC to hit a top speed of 220 km/h. In 2012, a high output OPC model is set to wow hot-hatch enthusiasts – more news on that early next year. Generous equipment levels in Local
