the word by George Thompson
Give the Kids a Break!
While the weather has wreaked havoc for many during this summer, the ones I really feel sorry for are young kids who are on the verge of returning to school having been prisoners to the weather for the whole of their ‘summer holidays’. While we have had the odd few hours respite from the weather the long term forecast isn’t looking too great either. Should the weather change for the better before the kids return, I think school authorities should consider rescheduling back to school for a week to give the kids a chance to get out and get some fresh air. If my memory serves me right, I think this situation did occur in the past, whereby school authorities did reschedule back to school on compassionate grounds because of bad weather? * * * I mentioned respite from the weather and it was during one of these brief respites last week that the Young at Heart Group from Douglas, enjoyed what I consider one of the jewels in West Cork’s crown – Sherkin Island - with its beautiful beaches, welcoming locals, the Jolly Roger Pub and Murphy’s Hotel, with its marina. I love visiting this place with its beautiful yet rugged Atlantic landscape and if the weather is right, there is no better place to be. * * * With the return of the Premiership to the TV screens, it seems that closer to home, Cork City FC are going through a bit of a rough patch. I am a fan of Cork City FC and the club has brought a lot of entertainment to fans and success to Leeside, in many cases reminiscent to the days of Hibs and Celtic. I hope that the club can sort their problems and continue to bring entertainment and joy to Cork soccer fans. * * * Our deepest sympathies go to the O’Donnell family from Gartan Park on their recent loss.

Cork City Football Club
Dear Editor, Through your paper, would you kindly ask the people of Cork City and County to come to Turners Cross next Thursday for Cork City v Bray Wanderers match, kick off is at 7.45pm. It is important to keep League of Ireland Soccer in Cork as so many people benefit, mostly children. My role in the Club, as Community Liaison Officer, has seen many smiles on children’s faces being mascot, ball boys and girls, and also the many visits to the Children’s Wards in the C.U.H and the Mercy Hospital and of course you can’t do these things without our wonderful players, who give their time after training, sometimes not finishing training until 4 o’clock. A lot of boys look forward to playing with Cork city F.C. - that would be their dream. I have been with the Club for 22 years, and worked very hard to make children’s dreams come true, and I would not have been abler to do this if it had not been for my beloved Cork City F.C. Please come out on Thursday night and support us and keep soccer in “Cork” Yours sincerely, Noelle Feeney
HERO HARRINGTON !
Dear Editor All of Ireland celebrates Padraig Harrington’s wonderful achievement. His late father, Paddy, a rebel football hero of mine in the 1950s and 60s. 1956, Galway’s terrible twins Frank Stockwell and Sean Purcell denied us bringing Sam home. 1957, we faced wee County Louth captained by musician Dermot O’Brien and lost. Overconfidence and underestimating opposition our downfall. Having to wait for the great dual player Jimmy BarryMurphy and co in 1973 to end 28 year famine. Back to the wee ball and Harrington’s feat, a Cork
publication boobed badly putting Padraig top of the tree as Eire’s greatest sportsman of all time. Not just on Leeside but countrywide, all acknowledge the genius from Cloyne Criostoir O’Rinn, is No.1 by a mile. To add insult to injury, the article writer in his ignorance leaves the Ringer out of the equation with his list of contenders! A sacrilege on De Banks!!! Neil O’Donoghue Greenhills
The GF
Dear Editor It is with great disappointment and confusion I write you. Have been suffering Depression since 2006 when my whole world had fallen apart . I had been married 20 yrs and it all came to a halt. Lost some wonderful happy years rearing my beautiful children the only reason I choose to stay alive, Now 4 years on and 3 stays in The Wonderful GF Unit for those who like me never herd about it is the building attached to the rear of the A&E section, in the CUH. When You walk down past the corridor from G1 which is the Physiotherapy Section you’re entering a time warp, you firstly notice no air conditioning and it gets worse, You see The Main University Hospital and GF are On a Different Budget, and it is a dumping ground for all kinds off ailments from Alzheimer’s Drug Addicts Bio Polar, Anorexic People who are Blind. Suicidal, Abuse Victims, Bereavement sufferers and lastly lawbreakers who are accessed through this unit, It upset’s me terribly when the media & general public falter this unit. It has the most wonderful caring staff from the Psychiatric Team, who put on activities to help you get through the day, to the super Female & Male Nurses who have saved my life twice. One is assigned a nurse for the day and if you are down which happens a lot in there, they will loving sit awhile and chat to you, nothing is a bother. I have

walked a blind man up and down on several occasions, the nurse’s have to physically carry the Alzheimer’s patients up and down that horrible concrete stairs day and night. I also found the stairs tough; alas the government have no funds for GF. Instead the staff have to do marathons, and other things to try an raise vital funds. I nearly died twice back in 2006 couldn’t be woken one morning for breakfast, I heard after from a nurse the they didn’t have oxygen in the unit, what had happened was it was a very hot summer and had the use of an nebulizer every night, but this night another female patient needed it more, also the fact there was 6 of us sleeping in the one ward, an nebulizer only cost’s €100 and they had one between 50 patient’s
how sad is that. Now I’m sadly retired from a job I loved, because off ill health. So If you feel strongly enough about our plight; Please… Please Donate to Tadieco’s with the Friends Of GF, You’ll never know a day may come when you’ll need GF. Reports suggests that 1 in 10 suffer Bio Polar Disorder at some stage in their Lives. & more women than men, and an alarming amount of young people. Today I was discharged from GF and because I’m in the Southern Region I’m going to Ravenscourt Alas the staff there have no funds either, So All You Big Company’s you could make it so different. The Farmyard Playschool With Ulli Falcini
A new playschool of a different type has just opened its doors in the beautiful surroundings of the Cork Heritage Park in Bessboro, Blackrock / Mahon.
‘Different’, for several reasons.
It is run on a daily basis by 2 highly qualified, enthusiastic teachers with years of experience in childcare. The number of children attending at anyone time, is as low as 15. There is plenty of room for movement, exploring and discovering - inside the playschool and outside in the park. The old stone cottage in the farmyard has two rooms. One of them is the playroom, full of natural materials such as wood to construct with, sheep wool, conkers, stones, see-shells, knitted stand up dolls and animals, wooden trains and trucks in the construction corner. Then there is our ‘Wendy-house’ with its child sized kitchen, the hand made dolls in their cradles

and plenty of room to have a really good ‘tea-party’. The cosy bookcorner with its soft sheepskin rugs doesn’t only invite to look at books, but is a great place for a cuddle, a quiet chat or a little rest after the hard work of playing. The kitchen/eating area is used on an every day basis, be it to prepare a healthy meal, like ‘home made vegetable soup with veggies from the garden, to bake whole meal rolls, or to sit down and have a ‘proper meal’ together like people used to do in the ‘good old days’. The other room then provides space for more lively games like running, jumping, crawling, swinging, climbing and lot’s more to help the children to grow strong, balanced and healthy. On daily adventures outside, they are truly blessed, with everything a child’s heart could wish for. There are meadows to run over, trees to climb on, bushes to hide in, brooks to paddle in, a huge sandpit to work in, slides, playhouses, seesaws, merry-go-rounds and even a vegetable garden to grow their own goodies. The Minister for Education must make spending on primary education a Government priority in the new Dåil. As teachers, parents and pupils face into another year of large primary school classes, more and more classes being held in prefabs and some local schools losing teachers now more than ever there is a need for primary schools to be the focus Just before the school summer holidays the Government announced that class sizes would not be reduced to 26 children per teacher as promised in the programme for Government but remain at 27 children per teacher. This decision will result in Douglas Boys NS losing two teachers and Beaumont Boys NS and Christ King Mon in Turners Cross losing one teacher each. Large class sizes can no longer be acceptable and steps must be taken to reduce class sizes. Schools throughout Cork are facing unacceptable overcrowding with prefabs now being used as a long term replacement for badly needed school buildings. In the year 2000 the Department of Education spent ₏4 million on renting prefabricated and other temporary school accommodation by 2007 it was ₏35.5 million. Local schools that received prefabs as temporary solution while new schools or extensions were being built now find that these prefabs have become permanent replacements for those new school building. Many local primary schools like Ballygarvan NS, Shanbally NS and the Star of the Sea NS in Passage have long been promised new school buildings but face another school year with teachers and pupils still in prefabs. The new Dåil needs to see a new attitude from this Government when it comes to primary education. It needs to be a national priority.

Douglas Writers Group Barry’s of Douglas Competition
with Ronnie McGinn Last Autumn I attended an All Souls Night Mass, as I have done every year for the past fifty years or so. This time there was something different, but I wasn’t quite sure how to explain it. Something I couldn’t quite put my finger on, so I brushed the thought aside and carried on. A few days ago, Shipton Group Operations Manager, Bronwyn Cross, was in our office. During the course of conversation we congratulated her on the arrival of her new granddaughter. Bronwyn explained she missed seeing her family growing up and it was the reason she would soon be returning to her native New Zealand, “after all” she explained ““grandparents are the new old people”. Then it struck me, what I had missed on All Souls Night. All Souls Night Not an old person here tonight, Where we’ve gathered to kneel and pray, Pray for the dead by candlelight, In church, at the end of the day. Where we’ve gathered to kneel and pray, We’ve always had old people here, In church at the end of the day, The last autumn day of the year.

• The multi storey car park is now taking shape. 100 tonnes of steel is being erected each day. Five articulated trucks transport the steel to Cork from Northern Ireland each morning. You can see the ramps being formed on the north side. Concrete will be poured within the next week for the first floor of the multi storey car park and shoppers will be able to use this portion of the car park from late October. • Work is now finished on the north-west corner and this area has now been given back to us as car park. • The main exit/entrances on the west of the Centre have been moved closer to the road to allow for the erection of steel in the multi storey car park to the west. We envisage this roadway will not move for some considerable time. • Two units on the east entranceway have been demolished to enable the builders to start construction of the lift well to the multi storey car park. This area will be grouted before piling commences. • Work has started on the west on cutting out the old river culvert, it will then be backfilled and bases built. • Work in conjunction with the County Council Water Department was carried out on the new plaza on the east. • The road works carried out over the past weeks has now been completed and the traffic lights are in operation.

Travelling on her will be local prize winners Sharon & Jim Condon who were the lucky winners of the Cobh & Harbour Chamber fundraising draw sponsored by the Port of Cork. Sharon and Jim will be flying to Southhampton to join the ship where they will enjoy the luxury of this fifteen deck beauty with its onboard wave generator for surfing, a dedicated sports pool (for volleyball and basketball), and whirlpools which extend from the ship’s sides. If this wasn’t enough there is an internal street lined with shops, pubs and wine bars. An innovative “bridge which can be lowered from the ceiling void to provide a performance space above the crowds. An excited Sharon confirmed that she can’t wait. “My husband Jim has been in the Navy for the past 21 years so a few days at seas is nothing new for him but for me it will be my first ever cruise and I am packing already”. The Independence will be staying overnight in Cobh on the 24th August and a full fun days entertainment has been organised from 12.30 til 7 pm. There will be all the fun of the fayre on Sunday as Cobh’s Farmers Market will be joined by the Le Marché de France European Market and will be offering the best in local and European fayre including organic produce, breads, cakes, homemade sausages etc. While the Arts and Crafts Fair will be showcasing textile work, jewellery, both oil and acrylic paintings and wood turning. In addition to the markets there will a host of FREE entertainment, with balloon clowns and face painters to keep the children entertained. Music by the award winning “Cantate Choir and Monkstown Chamber Choir will begin at 1.30 pm while local favourite, Welsh Tenor, Ryan Morgan will take centre stage on the bandstand to perform. For those of you looking for more fun there will be an opportunity for you to participate in some friendly competition ‘sumo style’ wrestling in the square. Resident Carilloneur Adrian Gebruers will give a carillon recital from 4.30 to 5.30pm and to conclude the days entertainment ‘The Swingin’ Blue Cats’ will perform in the promenade from 5.30 pm. The Swingin’ Bluecats has a 3 piece brass section. Resplendent in 1940’s Zoot Suits the band covers artists such as Big Joe Turner, Louis Jordan, Louis Prima, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, Brian Setzer Orchestra, Colin James, Fats Domino, Cab Calloway etc and promise to be a most entertaining gig. There will be vintage cars on the pier and if that wasn’t enough the Haulbowline Theatre Group will perform their adaptation of John B Keane’s “Moll” in Haulbowline at 8pm. The launch will leave the DOD pier at 7.30pm. Tickets are €10 and are available at the usual outlets in Cobh. All in all it will be a party in the prom and one you will not wish to miss! The Cobh and Harbour Chamber would like to thank the businesses in Cobh who contributed to the Summer Swing this year and to those who helped sell tickets for the draw and of course to the people of Cobh and the surrounding areas for their ongoing support and in particular the Port of Cork and the Sheraton Fota Hotel & Spa. It is appreciated thank you all for the seven thousand two hundred euros which has been raised of which 4,450 has already been spent on the Summer Swing entertainment to date.

Ask Dr. Doug
by Dr. Douglas Meckelborg B.Ed., D.C. (Doctor of Chiropractic)
I’ve been told it’s “Just Muscular”!
Health & Beauty
So often I hear new patients, seeking relief from a long term problem, say that they were told their problem was “just muscular”. They had sought conventional care, had been given tablets for inflammation and pain, and maybe even had an x-ray ordered, which was dismissed as “clear”. The pain, stiffness, and inflammation continued despite the diagnosis and treatment for a problem they were told was simply muscular. I have a problem with the diagnosis of, “Oh, that’s just muscular”. This diagnosis does two detrimental things. Firstly, it negates the problem as being anything serious with no potential long term consequences. Secondly, this type of diagnosis doesn’t search for the underlying cause. It serves to reduce the body to just isolated tissues, without really coming up with an adequate reason, or often, an effective solution. Spinal related complaints can hardly be reduced down to one single tissue as being the cause of the problem. The human body is unparalleled in its complexity. The bones of the skull and spinal column are arranged in a certain position to encase and protect millions upon millions of nerve cells. These nerve cells connect to every cell, organ, and tissue supplying them with the electrical energy they require to stay alive. The muscles, supplied by these nerves, attach to the bones of the spine in intricate ways to allow movement in every capacity. Ligaments, also entwined with millions of nerves, hold bones together and serve to help the brain understand the body’s position in space, called proprioception. The joints are acted on by muscles and restricted by ligaments to maintain their position, allowing full ranges of motion. Their surfaces are covered in cartilage and bathed in special fluid to help in lubrication. They are also supplied by nerves to ensure their alignment is satisfactory and that they are not “wearing” improperly. The organization of all this, even at the simplest level, is so complex that it is incomprehensible. You may have noticed a common theme amongst the tissues described here. They are all supplied by nerves that stem from the spine, including muscles. How could a problem ever be “just muscular”? If the proper bone alignment of the spine is even mildly lost, ligaments become
irritated, muscles become imbalanced, nerves become choked, cartilage wears, joints become restricted, etc, etc, and then comes the pain and inflammation. That’s not just a muscular problem! Chiropractors focus on assessing the entire neuromusculoskeletal system and don’t merely reduce muscular pain to simply a problem in the muscle tissue itself if, in fact, there’s more to consider. the heart pumping and to lose any excess weight

HEART DISEASE PREVENTION
Good dietary and lifestyle changes can go a long way towards promoting a healthy heart and preventing heart disease. Eat whole foods, fruit and vegetables as soluble fibre helps control cholesterol Maintain a low fat diet, reduce or eliminate foods high in saturated fats (animal fat) and ban all hydrogenated fats Increase consumption of essential fats: oily fish, nuts, seeds & avocados Increase Vitamin E and C foods i.e. citrus fruits, broccoli, green leafy veg, whole-grains, nuts and seeds to help prevent the first steps in the development of plaque, and to help arteries become flexible Grape seed extract is a powerful antioxidant and lessens the risk of heart disease Folic acid & vitamin B12: (always take together) help reduce by-products that increase the risks of heart disease Vitamin B6: (as part of a B complex) to keep arteries pliable Fish or flaxseed oil*: 2 teaspoons daily for essential fats Exercise for 30 mins each day to raise levels of ‘good’ cholesterol, to get

gthingsardening to do this week (The summer we never got is about to leave us. Hopefully the weather of the future will be a lot more compatible. As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.) Flower Garden Feed dahlias every fortnight to sustain flowering and build up tubers. Continue spraying roses and Michaelmas daisies with fungicide, as diseases are more likely now. Tie in new stems on climbing roses, arching them downwards to encourage flowering side shoots. Kitchen Garden Make new strawberry beds and transplant rooted runners to new positions. Check sweetcorn regularly and gather as soon as it is ripe. Trim chives and pot up for winter use. Sow a large leafy turnip variety for winter “greens”. Start covering endive with a large pot or dinner plate to blanch the hearts in 3 - 4
weeks time. Lawns & Hedges Rake lawns in the next week or two to scratch out thatch and other dead or loose material. Greenhouse Remove a little shading from the glass as heat levels decline. Pot up spring-flowering bulbs for early colour indoors. Take conifer cuttings with a heel for rooting in a cold frame. Continue taking cuttings of all tender perennials, indoors and out, as they will root well before winter. Finish repotting, house and greenhouse plants in the next 2 weeks; after that, wait until Spring. Finish thinning grapes. Feed cacti for the last time, but continue watering in warm weather. Take cuttings of scented pelargoniums in gritty compost. Water Garden Start thinning vigorous marginal and bog garden growth, especially where species

young @ heart by Phil Goodman Anne Riordan Regional Manager of the Irish Heart Foundation would like to thank the people who collected for the Douglas church Gate collection. Anne points out the money raised will go towards Patient Helpline, where members of the public can have their heart health questions answered confidentially by a medical professional. The Helpline is for patients and their families, and provides advice and support about managing a heart condition. Information is also provided on how to keep heart healthy, including blood pressure and keeping a healthy cholesterol level. The Helpline No. is LoCall 1890 432787. As we approach autumn, it is once again time to think about enrolling for one of the many Adult and Community Education classes. There is something for everyone in the Courses in Douglas Community School, for example, Painting Classes, Crochet, Diet and a Healthy Lifestyle, combat the effects of ageing (this course will help you learn how to enjoy a fit and healthy lifestyle as you get older), and best of all Ballroom Dancing for beginners. Brush up on the Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Jive, Cha-Cha, Samba, Tango, for our Young at Heart Waltzing Competition. Fees are reduced for many pensioners, also check out the many courses in Carrigaline Community School, again something for everyone. We had a very enjoyable outing last week to Sherkin Island, the weather was lovely, and it is certainly a place we will visit again next year (PG). As our summer outings are over, we can look back at some of the places went and the events we covered. We started our Summer Programme in April with a visit to Nano Nagle Centre. We also went to Aras an Uachtarain, Kilmainham Jail, Killarney, West cork, Blackrock Castle, Kenmare, Mount Melleray, School of Music, Gougane Barra, Maritime College, Naval Base, Centecor, etc. etc. as well as visiting Stormont Castle and Hillsborough castle. We will continue our Socials in St. Columba’s Hall from September.

Know Your Rights Question What is the Back to Education Allowance scheme? Answer The Back to Education Allowance (BTEA) scheme provides support to people receiving certain social welfare payments in order to take a course in second or third-level education. It provides a weekly payment that is not means-tested, so it won’t be affected if you are also receiving an education maintenance grant. There are minimum age requirements depending on your circumstances and the course you wish to pursue. To be eligible you must be receiving one of the following payments: • Jobseeker’s Allowance or Benefit • One-Parent Family Payment • Farm Assist • Deserted Wife’s Benefit/Allowance • Widow/Widower’s Contributory or Non-Contributory Pension • Prisoner’s Wife’s Allowance • Carer’s Allowance (after your caring responsibilities have finished) To qualify for BTEA at second level, you must have been getting the payment for at least six months. At third level the requirement is usually 12 months. In meeting these requirements, you can also include time spent on Back to Education or Back to Work Allowances, training courses with FÁS or Fáilte Ireland, Community Employment or Rural Social Schemes, VTOS, Job Initiative, Job Assist, Supplementary Welfare Allowance, or time in direct provision or in prison. You can also qualify for BTEA if you: are getting Illness Benefit for two years or more; if you are awarded statutory redundancy and are entitled to one of the above payments; or over 18 and getting Blind Pension, Disability Allowance, Invalidity Pension or Incapacity Supplement for the required time. You will get the maximum standard rate for the payment that qualified you for the scheme. Also, an annual Cost of Education Allowance of €500 is paid at the start of each academic year. You may keep any secondary benefits you are getting but if your income increases it may affect your entitlement to Rent or Mortgage Interest Supplement. You can obtain the application form BTE1 from your local Social Welfare office or the Lo-call leaflet request service at 1890 202 325. GALLOGLASS THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS “TOP GIRLS” AT THE GRANARY
Fresh from its successful run in Dublin, Galloglass Theatre Company’s production of Caryl Churchill’s iconic play, TOP GIRLS comes to the Granary Theatre in Cork from August 28th to August 30th. The all female cast of seven features some of Ireland’s finest young acting talent from stage and screen. First produced in 1982, the issues raised at the fantasy dinner party hosted by Marlene resonate just as strongly for a contemporary audience. Played by Kate Nic Chonaonaigh, Marlene has just been promoted in her job and finds herself facing the kinds of choices that have had to be made by women through the ages. Lesley Conroy, recently seen in the Award Winning Drama “Eden” takes on multi faceted roles of Marlene’s sister, Joyce, the Victorian Explorer, Isabella Bird and Mrs Kidd, the wife of Marlene’s Boss at Top Girls Employment Agency. Win, who also works at the Agency, and is involved in a relationship with a married man, is played by Janice Byrne, who stars in “Zoned”, the new movie from John Carney, the Director of the Oscar Winning Irish movie, “Once.” The cast also features Liz Fitzgibbon, Elaine Fox, Louise Lewis and Nyree Yergainharsian. The set and costume designer is Alyson Cummins and lighting design is Sarah Jane Shiels. Galloglass Theatre Company’s TOP GIRLS opens at the Granary Theatre Cork on August 28th and runs until August 30th. Booking is on 021 490 4275. Described by Michael Billington, Theatre critic for The Guardian, as “the best British play ever from a woman dramatist” the play, a deeply human and moving examination of feminist values in the home, in the workplace and in the past, builds to a superb climax.

G.A.A. FOCUS
Snippets from the Local and National Scene By Pat Harrington
Games & Holiday Times I thought I might give a different perspective on the two Cork championship games whilst on holidays. In the first week I viewed the games on satellite T.V; the standard was very poor. On the lead-up to both Cork encounters I was able to read John Allen’s view in the Irish Times. John Spoke of the occasion when Cork hurlers were going for three in a row, and of all the advice he received through the printed media. He was obviously hoping for a Cork victory on this outing. We were sailing on the day of the game and it was suggested to me that I should surf the net. With the assistance of the onboard receptionist I achieved limited success in that I was able to view Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh on Radio 1. At this stage the receptionist exited the library and left me to my own devices. Alas, things went downhill from there on and I failed to make contact with Croker. That atmosphere in the library was a lot more sedate after that as some people played chess and others were reading while one poor old man was slumped in his chair enjoying forty winks. My next move was to ring Finnie Ber – good news – the footballers had beaten Kildare. The next item of news was not so good – Cork hurlers were eight points in arrears at the interval. The full time result was even more disappointing. To be fair to Cork they had arisen Lazarus-like against Galway and Clare. The Cork public should be proud of their team for some gallant performances during the year. Dublin vs. Tyrone Dublin once again fell well short of the standard required to win the Sam Maguire. Four Leinster titles in a row mean little if you do not seriously challenge for the ultimate prize. The Dubs have not reached the allIreland final in any of those four years. There is no doubt that the Sky Blues are under pressure from there own supporters; the Dublin media also overestimate their worth. Some of the Dublin players are not equal to the status and potential attributed to them. By the way, Paddy Powers had decided prior to the game that the all-Ireland final would be contested by Dublin and Kerry, with Kerry at 11 / 8 on. Cork Football What of Cork? The record since 2002 in three all-Ireland semi-finals coupled with last year’s final is surely abysmal. They must have a right go at Kerry on Sunday; there is no virtue in trying to contain them. This time the Rebels need to hit hard while at the same time displaying the essential discipline. The Cork defence should start at No.15. Realistically one would have to favour Kerry but whatever the outcome we will be there to support them. Talk to you next week, Pat.

Champions Prepare For 2008/2009 Season
The work conducted by Neil McSorley and his assistant Pat Courtney in resurrecting the fortunes of Grangevale A.F.C. last season has been well documented. Neil, Pat and the squad of players who rallied around them did the club proud as the third division title was clinched in style. Indeed, the championship decider with Carrigaline United on a balmy evening at Ballea Park last May and the celebrations that followed will forever be indelibly ingrained in the hearts and minds of those fortunate to be present. To commemorate the acquisition of the clubs first silverware in twenty nine years, the annual awards were presented at Wao’s Chinese Restaurant in Grange last Saturday evening. Dan Cronin and Malik Elmusbahi won the player of the year and young player of the year awards, respectively. Jason Martin picked up the goal scorer of the year award and Eric Kennedy was the goal of the year winner following
Sport his cracker against Watergrasshill. Meanwhile, Barry Twomey was a popular winner of the clubman of the year award. In a playing career that has spanned almost two decades Twomey has been written off on many occasions, but continues to deliver on the pitch while showing great leadership to the younger players. The trophies were sponsored by Mr. Joe Kwan who continues to be a generous and loyal supporter of the club. In preparation for Grangevale’s return to AUL 2 several new signings were recently unveiled. These include local boy Conor O’Mahony, former prodigy Leonard O’Donovan and the experienced Colin McKeown. This trio is expected to provide the quality to ignite another promotion challenge. Youngster Diarmuid O’Neill has also been added to the squad and will be hoping to make a break through during the season. The summer break was a busy period for the Grangevale committee and this season visitors to Grangevale Park can look forward to the comfort of new state of the art dressing room facilities. Once again chairman Seán McCarthy leads a committee that includes secretary Patrick O’Sullivan, treasurer Dave O’Sullivan as well as Thomas Foley, James O’Callaghan,
Eric Maher and Seán McCormack. Club royalty in the guise of Dave and Bernie Williamson, Donie Cronin and Dave Hayes as always will be interested observers from the sideline and photographs and reports of all Grangevale games will be available for viewing on
The short summer break is now over and it’s back to competitive action next week. The Senior team have made a few signings during the summer and have used the Midleton tournament for pre season games. The opening Keane Cup game is away to Midleton on Saturday @ 3pm in a group that also contains last year’s winners Ballincollig. The MSL Juniors are current holders of the Junior League cup and have a tough group with matches away to Rockmount on Fri @ 7pm & Ringmahon on Wed @ 7pm. The AUL Juniors have been putting in the training as they go straight into league action against Lee Rangers on Sunday at 10:45. The Youths are in a tough League Cup group which opens on Thursday v Dunbar, this is followed by a trip to Crosshaven on Wed next. The U/17’s are late starting back but have a new Manager in John Foley, John spent many years with Grangevale and more recently with the Irish Examiner AUL & Ladies teams. He will bring plenty of organisation and experience to the team and we wish John the best of luck. The U/17’s are in a lge cup group with Avondale & Carrigaline. The construction of a new full size floodlit All Weather pitch began during the summer months and great progress has been made, Brian Kennedy & Tom Murphy have done Trojan work in organising and coordinating the project. It took three attempts to finish the Douglas Hall Golf Classic as rain stopped play twice. It finally finished on Aug 7th after play on July 4th & July 31st. Many thanks to John Coughlan and the organising Committee for their endeavours and to all those who sponsored a team or tee box. Finally please support the Douglas Hall Lotto which takes place each and every Monday night in the Grange.
