Dear Editor Each evening I see the playground in Douglas is surrendered to teenage delinquents acting the hooligan causing both vandalism and distress to younger children attempting to use the facilities, the age-group the playground is intended for rarely use it after 6, a time when many parents have finished work. I had been using the facilities for a couple of years now, mostly in the evenings after work but the teenagers in the place are a disgrace and its the same every evening. I noticed many other adults who entered the facilities in an evening being put off quickly by the teenagers blocking their children from using the slides and swings etc, they are kicking footballs inside the play area often striking the ball off a young child, and even urinating in the area. The lack of garda presence is ridiculous considering how close they are to the playground and what little else they have to do. Gardai are rarely seen walking around Douglas and they should be making their presence felt at least once every evening in the park and playground area. Recently I was in the playground with my child, with at least 20 teenagers attempting to vandalise the equipment, using the equipment inappropriately and kicking balls off the equipment which was intimidating for any child. Any time I saw an adult speak out to the teenagers he or she was met with a volley of verbal abuse and surrounded by a number of them. On that last particular occasion 2 women arrived with their 2 children and asked me was it always like this as they watched the teenagers behaving like animals, I told them it was the same most evenings and they said they never saw a playground so surrendered to teenage delinquents, were questioning why the gardai didn’t have a regular presence etc etc. Their 2 daughters were making the most of it until one of them was hit by a thrown glass bottle after a few near misses from kicked footballs. The 2 women left with their crying children and told me they would never come back and would instead drive to other playgrounds a few miles away like they used to do previously, it being a long-term issue. Shortly after one of the hooligans deliberately walked into my young daughter pretending not to see her, I confronted him and was predictably met with the same volley of verbal abuse and surrounded by a number of them, the verbal abuse continues anytime I pass them. I have heard very many parents in Douglas inform me they never use the Douglas playground because of the teenagers in the park and instead they drive to other facilities. Why hasn’t this issue been dealt with a long time ago, obviously both the council and gardai are aware of the problem considering the vandalism to the facilities and presumably very many complaints over a prolonged period. The playground was intended for young children so why are the teenagers tolerated in there. When the lady whose girl was hit by the glass bottle left she said she would make a complaint to the local councillors and the gardai about the state of the park but she appeared to have little faith in the usefulness of them. What exactly do the Douglas Gardai do each evening and why haven’t they made a regular appearance in the park? It wouldn’t take a lot of effort to clear the hooligans out. They often loiter outside the Tesco’s across the road between stints in the park, its a small area so surely the Gardai can control it.

The upgrade works will see nightly closures from 9.15pm to 7am every night with the exception of Fridays. A contra flow system, which has been adopted for previous tunnel works, is not feasible in this case as for long term closures they pose safety issues. There will however, be a blue lane to facilitate emergency services vehicles, should they need to pass through. The work has been programmed by BAM Contractors to be completed by November 30th, ensuring as little disruption as possible for the public.

Brian Crowley MEP returns after illness Brian Crowley, MEP, returned to work this week, after many months’ treatment at Cork University Hospital. He said his stay in hospital proved a frustrating time for him, even though he was able to work from his hospital bed, on the phone to his office staff locally and in Brussels. “ I have always been an on-the-ground constituency person, and not being able to meet and work with people around Munster was very frustrating, “ said Brian Crowley. “However, I will be making up for lost time, over the coming weeks, especially in the employment creation and employment retention areas. I am on the E.U., Industry & Trade Committee which has a €52 billion budget, and I will be activating again, meetings with groups and individuals at local venues. The fastest growing population in developed nations is the elderly, those age 65 and older. This growth ensures that issues affecting seniors will continue to take center stage in the political arena. Far beyond mere politics, however, this “graying of society” will result in the increasing frequency of chronic diseases, which itself will pose challenges to the institutions of family and marriage. Due to both biological and cultural factors, women will likely continue to bear the brunt of caregiving. Thus women and adult children will increasingly face troubling and often tragic decisions as they care for elderly family members. Due to the large amount of information available and due to Christian resources for elder care, however, such difficult choices will be opportunities to demonstrate the true meaning of love.

A few years ago Edward Broderick of Rockaway Beach NY wrote this poem about two ladies in charge of a local senior center. His poem is an inspiration, it reminds us there are people in the world who do wonderful work, who rise above the rat race and provides us with something more sustainable to believe in, something that takes us out of ourselves and identifies us with a side of life that now, more that ever, needs our support.

Marymount 7’s!

Movies in St. Columbas Hall

The Marymount 7’s is a weekend 7 a side soccer tournament being run on the weekend of the 24/25/26th of August in aid of Marymount Hospice. It’s the same format as footy.ie leagues, (who are helping organise this event) but it will be a cup competition. The Perpetual cup and plate is being sponsored by Keanes Jewellers and the Irish Referees Society has agreed to ‘Ref’ the weekend’s soccer for free! The Rochestown Park Hotel has also generously given a year’s Gym membership to the man of the match of the Final.

Insect bites and stings Signs and symptoms of an insect bite result from the injection of venom or other substances into your skin. The venom sometimes triggers an allergic reaction. The severity of your reaction depends on your sensitivity to the insect venom or substance and whether you’ve been stung or bitten more than once. Most reactions to insect bites are mild, causing little more than an annoying itching or stinging sensation and mild swelling that disappear within a day or so. A delayed reaction may cause fever, hives, painful joints and swollen glands. You might experience both the immediate and the delayed reactions from the same insect bite or sting. Only a small percentage of people develop severe reactions (anaphylaxis) to insect venom. Signs and symptoms of a severe reaction include: • Nausea • Facial swelling • Difficulty breathing

How do I handle mum’s Alzheimer’s?

• Abdominal pain • Deterioration of blood pressure and circulation (shock) Bites from bees, wasps, hornets etc. are typically the most troublesome. Bites from mosquitoes, ticks, biting flies also can cause reactions, but these are generally milder. Although rare, some insects also carry disease such as West Nile virus or Lyme disease.

For mild reactions Move to a safe area to avoid more stings. Remove the stinger, especially if it’s stuck in your skin. This will prevent the release of more venom. Wash area with soap and water. Apply a cold pack or cloth filled with ice to reduce pain and swelling. Apply hydrocortisone cream (0.5 percent), calamine lotion or a baking soda paste — with a ratio of 3 teaspoons (15 milliliters) baking soda to 1 teaspoon (5 milliliters) water — to the Diabetes, what do I do now?

Carrigaline Community News Damhsafest Success The success of the Carrigaline based Damhsafest 2012 was made possible by the generosity of the host families, the sponsors and the many volunteers who worked tirelessly before and during the festival. This year’s Cork International Folk Dance Festival was blessed with fine weather and the many outdoor performances, which were free to the public, were greatly appreciated. Four International Folk Dance Groups totaling 76 personnel travelled to Ireland for the event from many parts of the world. The American Hoedowners and the Velvet Blue bluegrass band were first to arrive, they came from Kentucky and spent two weeks here. The ‘Skylark and Artforge’ Karelian group from near St Petersburg in Russia drove 3,000 Kilometers over 3 days in their bus to be at the festival. The Parahultaset from Parainen in Finland flew into Dublin airport and travelled to Carrigaline by bus while the Welsh folk Dancers, ‘Dawnswyr Tipyn oBopeth’ travelled by car and ferry to participate. During the course of the Folk Dance Festival, concerts in the Carrigaline Court Hotel and City Hall proved to be a spectacular success. Outdoor performances were presented in a number of locations including Opera Lane Cork City daily, Blarney Castle, Clonakilty, Kinsale, Cobh, Midleton, Crosshaven, Ballinspittle and Carrigaline. Folk Dancers and musicians visited Westgate Foundation Day Care Centre and

Retirement Home in Ballincollig and St Luke’s Home in Blackrock where they performed for the residents. All groups performed in the City Council Chamber at the Official Launch ceremony where Mayor John Buttimer officially opened the festival, Damhsafest 2012.

Men’s Shed A feature of the Carrigaline Men’s Shed in recent weeks is the number of visitors who call to see the place. They are all made welcome and are given a tour of the facility by one of the members. Many aspects of their first project the renovation of the building are nearing completion and new projects for the year ahead are being planned. Munster Fleadh Cheoil Winners Congratulations to Douglas Comhaltas who won the Munster final of the under 12 Céilí Band competition at the Munster Fleadh Cheoil in Dungarvan yesterday. They will now represent Cork at the All Ireland Fleadh Cheoil in Cavan on Saturday August 18th. Other members were placed in their competitions also Kaitlin Towe came 3rd in the Flute, Meabh Ní Cheallacháin got 3rd place in the Drum competition and Finn Mac Fhlannachadha came 2nd in Melodeon.

Ballinlough Community News With Mary Cremin Annual Ballinlough Senior Citizens Outing On Saturday 28th of July the annual Ballinlough Senior Citizens outing headed to the Kingdom for the day. The trip took in a visit to both Killarney and Tralee where the guests busted a Museum and enjoyed an afternoon of retail therapy. 44 happy but tired attendees then enjoyed a wonderful dinner in Oriel House Hotel in Ballincollig. All enjoyed the day and for the most part the dreadful rain stayed away. The committee would like to thank our affable and oblidging bus driver Denis Connolly and Nora Cronin of Cronins Coaches. New Look for Fernhill Golf Popularly know as Fernhill Golf Club located in Carrigaline, undergone a total refurbishment and is now under new management. This Friday Cork’s own vintage rock four-piece The Wall Street Thieves, launch their second EP ‘Taking Aim’ at the Oliver Plunkett Bar. Combining melodic grooves with rock riffage, they take inspiration from classic Rock & Roll of the Sixties and Seventies, and make something new, exciting and energetic out of it. They’ve been slowly and steadily expanding their fan base, performing relentlessly around Cork, as well as playing the Electric Picnic to rave review, all the while writing and recording new material, which they will be showcasing on the night. A review published recently by Justice Alan Shatter into the findings of the Swedish House Mafia gig in Phoenix Park has concluded that Phoenix Park is not a ‘suitable’ venue for electro music gigs and there was insufficient security on the day. Following the nine stabbings and two overdoses at the Swedish House Mafia gig in Phoenix Park on July 7th Shatter called for a review from the Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan. The main findings of the report state that the city centre venue was not suitable for live ‘electric music’ concerts and recommends that the promoter should stipulate the type of music or artist they wish to perform and give a detailed risk assessment based on the type of audience expected to attend an event when applying for a permit. Other findings include that the Event control Centre was held not to be fit and additional accommodation was requested from the promoter but never materialised and limited access to CCTV was also highlighted in the report. Callinan also criticised not having the appropriate security in place to deal with the demographic of concert goers and that security were unclear on policies of checking ID’s and dealing with drug abuse and drug dealing at the site. He said that ‘There are a number of lessons to be

Musical visionary Bryan Flynn's production of The Sound of Music featuring Cara O'Sullivan, Carol Anne Ryan, Michael Sands and a 70 strong cast, crew and orchestra is set to revolutionise for a three week run the means by which the family Von Trapp musical is staged, dressed,

sung and expressed through music. Flynn, whose vitality and energy for the present creative pursuit mark this production out, is about to launch one of the premier Cork Opera House highlights of the 2012 season. Says the director, “the movie differs to our production, our emphasis takes The Sound of Music to a different place and we think that this is going to suit a broader contemporary audience.” This is no empty rhetoric and Flynn's trajectory as musical director attests to a determined pursuit of musical sophistication across a career which began in his home town's Waterford City International Festival of Live Opera some 21 years ago, sojourned in Dublin for a year before finally arriving in his spiritual creative home of Cork and over which time the 42 year old has directed no fewer than 80 musicals. Flynn has in recent times and to widespread acclaim directed from the ground up the music/hurling comedy 'All Star Wars' and his

'Michael Collins' musical played to enraptured audiences at the same time as it introduced a stylistic shift in how a musical can be communicated. The one-time pianist and percussionist evidently revels in achieving seeming impossibilities and works very consistently with some of the greatest technicians currently working anywhere in musical theatre. “The beauty of working with Mary Hickson (R.I.P.) and Cork Opera House is that you get to build from scratch the entire production, all of it and this is the only venue where that's happening.” What's apparent from speaking with Flynn is that if you are afforded the opportunity to build entire productions then it naturally follows that you want to work with the best people available and 'The Sound of Music' features a virtual who's who of theatrical cream to whet the appetite of Cork audiences lucky enough to catch this highly

Maeve Readman upped sticks from making wigs for the London Theatre to move to west Cork and she's designed the extraordinary wigs used by our stars here. David Kidd the lighting director comes highly recommended having worked for many years at the English National Opera and he's produced a lighting array that's amazing. Joan Hickson is our highly inventive costume designer.” The production features a 14 strong orchestra alongside a powerful vocal cast and ensemble that's likely to shake the walls of the theatre while the seven young performers who'll perform the family Von Trapp children were selected from a search involving the audition of 400 children. After the devastation caused by the recent floods in Douglas, it is great to see local business fighting back and maintaining their commitment to Douglas. The very best way we can play our part is to support them as they open one by one. Gardai in Douglas are warning elderly householders to be wary of door to door salesmen operating in the area offering to repair driveways, roofs and guttering etc. They are actually preying on householders and checking out who is living in houses and what their circumstances are. Neighbors of elderly people should be vigilant and keep an eye out for these operators, if you are suspicious about there activities note the registration plates and let the Gardai know. We also encourage our older people to get a pendant alarm; these alarms are a way of getting help in an emergency, or reassurance when you are feeling anxious. Older people feel at risk if they are living alone but you can stay independent in your own home whilst being assured there is someone looking out for you. A Pendant Alarm is a S.O.S. system which gets emergency help within seconds by the simple press of a button usually worn around your neck or on your wrist, it will provide reassurance for your family and confidence for your yourself ,The Pendant alarms are a100 percent grant funded, all you pay is the annual monitoring

Our sincere thanks to; teachers Owen Casey and Aileen Goulding for there ongoing commitment to our seniors, this is the fifth year with four different classes each year. We are off to Killarney this week to Daniel O’Donnell concert. We hope to continue trips to the theatre for the winter months. Next up is a play set in Cork in the 1960’s called “Over The Pub”. It features a Cork family of two parents and four children called the “Murphy’s”. It is sheer coincidence that the three young actors are all pupils at Douglas Community School, all in the same class and all called Michael: Michael Morris, Michael

Barry and Michael McLoughlin chosen from different auditions. The play is on in The Corks Arts Theatre. The Heart Foundation Flag day is on 10th and 11th August this weekend at St. Columbas Church: collectors needed for each mass you can contact me to arrange times.

Home & G arden Things to do This Week As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower Garden Feed dahlias every fortnight to sustain flowering and build up tubers. Continue spraying roses and Michaelmas daisies with fungicide, as diseases are more likely now. Tie in new stems on climbing roses, arching them downwards to encourage flowering sideshoots Kitchen Garden Make new strawberry beds and transplant rooted runners to new positions. Check sweetcorn regularly and gather as soon as it is ripe. Trim chives and pot up for winter use. Sow a large leafy turnip variety for winter “greens”. Start covering endive with a large pot or dinner plate to blanch the hearts in 3-4 weeks time.

Lawns & Hedges Rake lawns in the next week or two to scratch out thatch and other dead or loose material.

Greenhouse Remove a little shading from the glass as heat levels decline. Pot up springflowering bulbs for early colour

indoors. Take conifer cuttings with a heel for rooting in a cold frame.

Minister Kathleen Lynch TD visits St. Luke’s Home, Mahon Kathleen Lynch TD, Minister of State for Disability, Older People, Equality & Mental Health paid an official visit

to St. Luke’s Home, Mahon(August 01, 2012) for The Home’s annual Family Fun Day. The event, which is now in its 4th year, is being coordinated by staff of Pepsico Ireland and is a highlight in the residents calendar as it provides an opportunity for them to come together socially with their children, grandchildren, friends and carers to enjoy a Family Fun-filled Day. The day kicked off with 30 volunteers from Pepsico Ireland visiting residents and staff within the five units of The Home engaging in the numerous therapies and activities that take place there each day. Games and activities (including traditional egg n spoon races, tug O’ war, 5 a side soccer and many more) commenced at 2pm on arrival of Minister Kathleen Lynch and continued well into the afternoon. Speaking at the Family Fun Day, Minister Lynch said; “On behalf of the staff, volunteers and those who live at St. Luke’s Home, I want to extent a huge thank you to Pepsico for

their contribution to the community in time, participation and support. When we start planning for the future we need to start planning for our future and we need to remember that St. Luke’s Home and days like this are so important.”We don’t always thank large corporations and it’s only fair to acknowledge that on all those residents who will benefit from Pepsico’s involvement.” All the staff, their families, supporters, relatives and volunteers battled it out in the various challenge events and great fun was had by all. The day culminated in the Great Pepsico Challenge which involved the Pepsico volunteers in a 5 a side soccer knockout competition. Oonagh O’Driscoll, Director of Fundraising at St. Luke’s Home; “At St Luke’s Home, we specialise in the care of older people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of Dementia, a disease

which is very much on the increase. Today in Ireland, there are 44,000 people living with dementia, by 2026 this figure will rise to 104,000, so really everyone should have some knowledge on the subject and basic tools on how to cope and care. We would like to thank all the staff from Pepsico who came out today and coordinated this event for the residents at St. Luke’s Home as keeping residents mentally and physically active can help prevent or delay many diseases including Alzheimer’s and other forms of Dementia.” Pepsico is an organisation committed to making a positive impact in the communities in which it is based and the Family Fun Day at St. Luke’s Home is a perfect fit for Pepsico’s ‘Power of One’ Campaign as it aims to demonstrate all the benefits of getting out and about and having some fun with the local community.

Douglas GAA Festival Last years Douglas G.A.A. Festival was a great success and this year the social committee have devised a series of events designed to replicate that success. The festival is scheduled for the weekend of 16th-18th August and the G.A.A. Club will be the venue for indoor and outdoor activities that will appeal to all age groups. All are welcome.

My forecast was for Cork to beat Waterford and Kilkenny to win by 7 or 8 points. Both Cork and Kilkenny will be happy to reach the last four. Cork’s performance was just enough to get them over the finishing line. Waterford for their part will have been disappointed they did not close out the game when they were three points up with ten minutes left on the clock. John Mullane was causing huge problems for Cork in the fifteen minutes before the break; it was surprising they did not retain him in that position. Had the De Le Salle man not got the fitness for playing out the field? Cork showed character in reeling in the Decies and they finished well. The inability of the Cork half forward line to win the ball in the air must be a cause of concern for the management – all three were replaced. I would fancy Darren Sweetnam to start next time out. Connor Lehane will also come into the fray. The selectors may well look at John Gardiner, but I think Eoin Cadogan’s greater pace will keep him in the pivotal position. On paper and on their performances Cork are the weakest of the four remaining teams. But paper never won games and perhaps the Rebels will all click on the day. Galway for their part were sensational against Kilkenny. That said they very rarely do back to back high performances. The Westerners tend to flatter to deceive. Cork need a big performance and must score goals. I

will go against the grain here. Cork may produce a performance to upset the Corribsiders.

Douglas in All Ireland Community Games Finals Douglas have a very strong and proud tradition of fostering participation in the Community Games over the past 20 years. This year they have been successful in having 2 teams qualify to represent both Cork and Munster in the HSE sponsored All Ireland Community Games Finals. This a major achievement and has generated a massive response from the entire community. On 2 consecutive weekends the Under 10 Gaelic Football ( Aug 17th-19th) and the Under 11 Hurling (Aug 24th – 26th) teams will travel to Athlone to attempt to bring back 2 All Ireland titles to the Douglas. There are a total of 39 players involved in both squads. Under their respective coaches they have been training very diligently since May. They have played with great skill, determination and teamwork to get through both the Cork and Munster finals. The Under 10 footballers defeated Gneeveguilla / Rathmore, Kerry in the Munster final by four points. This was a sweet victory as the Kerry side had beaten Douglas in last year’s competition. The Under 11 Hurlers faced Tipperary champions and favourites Kilruane

McDonaghs in their Munster final and won by 5-5 to 2-03. And so this has brought them to the All Ireland finals weekends, held in Athlone IT campus, where they will both play off for the Bronze, Silver and Gold medals. This will be a fantastic experience for all of these young players and their families. However there is a significant cost associated with participating in this event e.g. preparing and kitting out the teams, entry fees, insurance, travel and accommodation. A group of parents are currently coordinating a huge fundraising effort to cover the large cost. Sponsorship cards have been given to each of the players and they are now getting support from family friends and neighbours. Also some of the local businesses have been very supportive and have kindly given donations towards offsetting the cost. A table quiz will be taking place on Friday Aug. 10th in the Douglas GAA Club as the final fundraising push kicks in. Kilkenny

Yes, Kilkenny won by nine points, though this was not vintage Kilkenny. We know that goals win games and the Cats scored four in this encounter. If the truth be told the Limerick defence was to say the least porous. The full back line went A.W.A.L. on a number of occasions and was duly punished. Kilkenny are a vulnerable side at the moment, not the awesome team that we knew up to a few months ago. Injuries and now suspension have taken their toll. I do not wish to give the impression that I’m writing them off, but they can be taken. This team is a long time on the road. The game will have done Kilkenny a power of good, whereas Tipperary for their part have been idle for a month. This Premier County side have not been ticking all the right boxes. Both teams are capable of better performances. I’ll put my head on the block and give my vote to Tipp.
