Towards a bilingual Cork – Public seminar on the Irish Language Gael-Taca, Corcaigh le Gaeilge are organising a public seminar for the Irish Language on Wednesday 7th March 2012 @ 7.30 p.m. in the Imperial Hotel, on the South Mall. The theme of the seminar is “towards a bilingual Cork”, with specific discussion on the 20 year strategy for Irish and how best to implement it in Cork. The 20 year strategy for Irish will be discussed initially, and then people will be put into focus groups, targetting specific areas of the language like Irish in Business, Children with Irish, teenagers with Irish, festivals with Irish etc. The seminar is about action, and empowering people to promote Irish in their own community. Adrian Breathnach, secretary with Gael-Taca says “This seminar is about giving the people of Cork a voice in further strengthening the language, and how this strategy can be implemented in a practical way, by all of us. We want to come away from this meeting with a targetted plan, not just general ideas. We will be focusing in on all areas of the community to do this”.

Budding Hairdressers The pupils of St Luke’s, from Junior Infants to Sixth Class went ‘mad’ with their hair to raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland, their chosen charity of the year. The children were incredibly creative, styling and colouring their hair, adding toys, pencils and other ‘decorations’. There was also a selection of ‘mad’ wigs on display. School staff joined in with a selection of brightly coloured wigs and unusual hairstyles. The pupils raised €441.10. Well done to all involved!

The Grange Road Dear Editor, I am writing this letter hoping it might come to the attention of the County Council or some local TD,S in the Grange area. I am living in Clifton Grange Housing Estate, just off the Grange Road. Up to 15 years ago we were the last park in Grange, beyond that was all fields and woods. Now Grange and Frankfield are built up and populated with hundreds of newcomers from far and wide. The Grange Road was widened and has very heavy traffic which mostly ignore the speed limit. Of all the new estates and other buildings in the area each and every one of them have traffic lights and zebra crossings at their entrance, but Clifton (the oldest estate in the area) which has a shop and a bus stop and with relations living across the road whom we wish to visit from time to time, we just have to hope for the best that we can get across that road safely. It takes less than 3 seconds to get onto the Grange Road and then there’s a car or truck crowding you. It’s a very wide part of the Road and crossing it is very dangerous; elderly
people, school children on dark winter mornings, and the rest of us living here have to put our lives at risk leaving Clifton each time. It is lethal, and I know for a fact that nothing will be done and my letter will be ignored until somebody is killed. It happened by Newton Court on the Cooneys Lane Road a couple of years ago. A dangerous ditch that blended in with the road was discussed a few times but again ignored by ignored by the Authorities, but WOW it finally got red and white signs in front of it after someone was killed there. For God sake will some TD or Councilor get onto us about it, by letter or in person, four TD,S have ignored this issue in the past and I’m certain this letter will be ignored as well. When somebody is killed on the Grange Road, maybe after their funeral they might do something about this danger zone.

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn
No one thinks any longer that we can base our civilization solely on reason; no one believes that the irrational impulses, both destructive and creative, in human nature can be wholly subdued. Even scientists are beginning to realize that it is unscientific to ignore the irrational element in humanity; it is irrational to regard humanity as wholly rational. But one rational thought we can all entertain is that of our heritage. In spite of war and peace, of recession and climate change, in spite of the ever changing world we live in, we are still who we are, and with St Patrick’s Day coming up fast it’s time to give the matter some serious thought and celebrate being ourselves.
Sprig of Shamrock Just a sprig of Shamrock It means so very much The Faith that Patrick taught through it And the green we love so much. We wear it with great pride and joy On this St Patrick’s Day. To all our loved ones here and far away. This is what we have to say: “Pin on your Sprig of Shamrock, Hold your head up high. Think of that old saying And you will surely smile Don’t forget to wet it At the nearest pub you go But stop before you drown it Or you won’t see Shamrock any more.” Phyllis Coughlan Send your poem to ‘The Poetry Corner’ / Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas or you can email it direct to ronniemcginn@ eircom.net. If possible keep your poem to 20 lines. You may choose any subject you like, in any form you like as long as it’s original. We look forward to hearing from you. RonnieMcGinn
Lynch Welcomes 200 New Jobs For Cork Labour T.D., Ciaran Lynch welcomed the announcement this week that pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly is to invest €330 million in its Kinsale plant. Commenting on the announcement Deputy Lynch said, “Creating over 200 highly skilled permanent jobs and generating 300 jobs in its construction is very positive development for Cork. This large scale investment by a global player like Eli Lilly is a huge vote of confidence in the local area, and coupled with the plant’s other base in the Cork region, it is a testament to Eli Lilly’s enduring commitment to Cork. Deputy Lynch further added, “These highly skilled jobs are exactly the type of jobs which the Irish economy needs to be attracting. Ireland is continuing to be a leading player in the pharmaceutical industry; and announcements like this mean that Irish workers will now be leading the fight against illnesses such as cancer and diabetes. Concluding his statement Ciarán Lynch TD said, “As outlined in the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs, the Government is actively working on cutting red tape to make it easier for pharmaceutical multinationals to set up in Ireland. Eli Lilly’s announcement is proof that the Government’s message is getting out to the international business community and I would like to wish Eli Lilly continued success in Ireland and wish them a speedy completion of their new plant.”

This Week’s Teazer
Last Weeks Teazer
Young Ben Bright had another good idea. He bet his friends that they couldn’t take hold of the ends of a piece of string and, without letting go, tie a knot in the middle of the string. After they had failed miserably he showed how it was done. What did he do ?
Ben Bright was a smart kid. He bet all the other kids in his class that they couldn’t stick a pin in a fully inflated balloon without busting it. He was right, they couldn’t. Each loser had to give him their lunch money and by the end of the day he was quite rich. The other kids insisted that the trick was quite impossible but Ben did it easily. How ?
Last Week’s Answer He stuck a small piece of sticky tape to the balloon and pushed the pin through the tape (Leaving it in)

Dog Fouling Dog Fouling is very prevalent in Ballinlough, I have been talking to residents in different areas in the Community, who are very annoyed on this matter. Dog owners are taking their dogs for a walk early in the morning, that is when most of the fouling occurs. In recent years Cork City Council ave erected numerous ‘No dog Fouling’ signs in public roadsways, parks, public walk ways, & greens. These signs clearly state that there is a Fine of €150.00 for Fouling . So if you are a dog owner bring your plastic bag /poop scoop with you. It is an offence to allow a dog under your control to foul in a public place

Visit to Lord Mayor and Launch of Expansion Plans On Tuesday, 21st Feb. Lord Mayor Councillor Terry Shannon and his wife, Ursula, welcomed members of Douglas Community Association to City Hall to give, in his words, ‘public acclaim to the great work carried out by volunteers’ in towns around the city, such as Douglas. Chairman of DCA Billy Coleman, introduced the members, who represent various services at the Douglas centre including Meals on Wheels, Tidy Towns, Pre-School Playgroup, Kiddies Playground, ‘Bring’ Recycling centre, and management of a 5-acre public park in the heart of Douglas. There was a particularly upbeat atmosphere to the occasion as the Lord Mayor was shown DCAs final plans, which are being submitted for Planning to Cork Co. Council, for the much needed extension and refurbishment of the centre to bring it up to modern standards, concentrating initially on providing a new Meals and Wheels kitchen. The project architect, Tom Hegarty of Tom Hegarty Architects, has done a tremendous job in delivering a final plan for the building which supports the demands of the multiple existing services at the centre. The service providers were part of the consultation process. At the same time, his plans provide scope for expanding other services which will be required in the future for the growing community needs. It has been a difficult and demanding brief, as we are sitting on
a most valuable site in the heart of Douglas, with major infrastructural services such as sewage, water, gas pipes, etc. running across it. The site of the building is on lease to the DCA by Cork Co. Council. Over the coming months, it is hoped to galvanize the local community into action to support fund-raising efforts for this project, the aim of which is to improve services for the growing needs of the Douglas community and thus enhancing the lives of its people. Any member of the community wishing to contribute or become involved in any way, can make contact by e-mailing douglasca@eircom.net, or by contacting Helen Fox, PRO, at jefox@eircom.net. Community Welfare Officer – Increased CoverA Community Welfare Officer now attends at the Community Centre on 5 different periods – on Tuesday afternoon, from 2-3.30pm, on Wednesday from 9.30-11.30am and 2-3.30pm, and Thursday from 9.3011.30 a.m., and from 2-3.30 pm.

Nightmares Nightmares are disturbing dreams associated with anxiety, fear or terror. Nightmares are common. They begin in childhood and tend to decrease after about age 10. However, some people have them as teens or adults, or throughout their lives.
Symptoms Nightmares are parasomnias undesirable experiences that occur during sleep. You’ve had a nightmare if: • Your dream wakes you up • You feel scared, anxious, angry, sad or disgusted as a result of your dream • You can think clearly upon awakening, and can recall details of your dream • Your dream occurs near the end of your sleep time • Your dream keeps you from falling back to sleep easily How do I handle mum’s Alzheimer’s?
Causes Most nightmares occur during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. You normally go through four to six sleep cycles a night, cycling through the sleep stages in about 90 minutes. Your REM stage lengthens with each cycle, from several seconds in the first cycle to up to an hour in the last. You’re more likely to have a nightmare in the last third of your night.
or mental health condition, treatment is aimed at the underlying problem. If stress or anxiety seems to be contributing to the nightmares, stressreduction techniques, counseling or therapy can help.
Lifestyle remedies If you’re having nightmares, try some relaxation techniques before bedtime. Take a warm bath, meditate or practice deep breathing. If your child is struggling with nightmares, be patient, calm and reassuring. Sometimes a little creativity helps, too.
Another disorder can be associated with nightmares. Many other factors can trigger nightmares, including: Stress, a traumatic event, scary books and movies, bedtime snacks, illness and medications.
Talk about the dream. Ask your child to describe the nightmare. What happened? Who was in the dream? What made it scary? Then remind your child that nightmares aren’t real and can’t hurt you.

Put stress in its place. If your child seems anxious or stressed, talk about what’s bothering him or her. Practice some simple stress-relief activities, such as deep breathing.
Treatment for nightmares isn’t usually necessary. If the nightmares are associated with an underlying medical Diabetes, what do I do now?
We can help you with any health
Rewrite the ending. Help your child imagine a happy ending for the nightmare. Encourage your child to draw a picture of the nightmare, “talk” to the characters in the nightmare or write about the nightmare in a journal. Provide company. Your child might feel more secure if he or she sleeps with a favorite stuffed animal, blanket or other comfort object. Enlist a guard. If your child is very young, you might assign a doll or stuffed animal the job of “staying awake” all night to guard against nightmares. Brighten up. Use a night light in your child’s room. If your child wakes up during the night, the light might be reassuring. Open the doors. Leave your child’s door open at night so that he or she won’t feel alone. Leave your door open, too, in case your child needs comfort during the night.

Health Committee disappointed at decision to reject new Children’s Hospital The Joint Committee on Health and Children is disappointed at the decision by An Bord Pleanála to reject the planned development of the new Children’s Hospital in Dublin. We welcome the Minister’s commitment at our meeting to developing the National Children’s Hospital and his decision to appoint Frank Dolphin, former Chairman of the Children’s University Hospital, Temple Street, to chair a review group to examine this decision. Members of the Committee expressed their dissatisfaction about the hospital situation to Minister for Health James Reilly, TD who attended the meeting. The Minister for Health; Minister for State with responsibility for Primary Care; Minister of State, Department of Health and Department of Justice, Equality and Defence with responsibility for Disability, Equality, Mental Health and Older People; and Cathal Magee, chief executive of the Health Service Executive (HSE) were before the Committee to discuss the issue of the impact of the incentivised early retirement scheme on the health sector. The Committee was told at its meeting that contingency plans are in place to deal with early retirement from the health service. Deputy Buttimer TD said: “The Committee heard that detailed contingency plans have been developed for each hospital and community service and that these plans continue to be refined as additional information becomes available. The HSE said it aims to maintain essential frontline services such as emergency departments, intensive care, neo-natal and maternity services.” At 16th February, the total number of staff who had indicated their intention to retire in the period September 2011 to February 2012 was 4,326, according to information supplied to the Committee. The HSE National Recruitment Service has put in place a number of recruitment panels, including nursing, midwives, mental health and psychiatric nurses, from which health services can draw to fill critical vacant posts. Contingency planning, on-going reviews and co-operation between all parties can ensure the continued delivery of a quality and safe service.”

handypersons to carry out oddjobs and DIY work for older people who find it difficult to do these jobs themselves. Some of the jobs that our volunteers can do include changing light bulbs, minor painting and decorating, hanging curtains, minor gardening, minor carpentry and installing smoke alarms. The service is free; clients only pay for the materials used. For bigger jobs that are beyond the scope of the volunteers, Age Action maintains a register of reliable and honest tradespersons whose contact details can be provided. As well as all of the main trades such as plumbers, electricians, builders etc, they have details for people who service boilers, clean chimneys, clean gutters and many other useful services. Regular social visits to older people can also be arranged. John O Mahony, Care & Repair Development Officer, says “I’m delighted that we now have a local Care & Repair phone number in Cork. Things to do This Week In spite of our dreams it’s still very much greenhouse weather. We’ll try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing. Now not everything in this article may apply to you or to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.
Flower Garden Prune Eucalyptus gunnil hard to ensure plenty of young foliage. Plant out autumn-sown sweet peas. Sow hardy annuals where they are to grow.
Kitchen Garden Dig up remaining leeks and parsnips, and heel in elsewhere to make room for Cultivation. Check blackcurrants for bigbud; pick off any found and destroy them. Continue planting onions sets. Sow early beetroot and turnip varieties in a warm spot. Sow carrots in the open or under cloches. Sow early leeks in a nursery bed.
Lawns & Hedges Clip deciduous hedges to shape, pruning them hard back if necessary.
Greenhouse Plant tomatoes, peppers and aubergines in a heated greenhouse. Sow parsley,
chives and annual herbs in small pots for planting out next month. Harden off early vegetables and hardy annual plants started under glass. Sow halfhardy annuals such as asters, dahlias and zinnias in a cold frame. Pot or box up dahlia tubers and start them into growth in a cold frame. Take cuttings from dahlias started earlier in heat. Spray grape vine buds occasionally with warm water to induce growth, but keep dry when flowers open. Topdress large container plants, replacing top 5cm (2in) with fresh compost. Order growing bags and lay in the greenhouse to warm up before use.

Young @ Heart by Phil Goodman
This week I would like to touch on the subject of loneliness especially in older people in our community. Life is full of stresses and changes that can lead to people feeling isolated and lonely, loneliness is about feeling separate from others or a sense of being alone in the world, loneliness is something that transcends all boundaries, all classes and all people, physical pain and social pain have a lot in common. There are many reasons people experience loneliness, loss of a loved one, moving from a neighbourhood where they raised their families and interacted with the neighbours and now they find they don’t even know the people living next door. It is very important not too isolate yourself. We get very positive feedback from people belonging to Young at Heart and who were in that “lonely place” now find and look forward to the many activities and events we enjoy... Everyone needs social interaction with other people, the more activities you attend the more confidence you will get which will help you break out of that loneliness circle. Also older lonely people are at increased risk of depression, Young at Heart wants to highlight the importance of loneliness in the lives of our elderly. It is a problem that is often overlooked and can manifest itself in other ways, such as health problems. If you know someone who is in that place bring them along for a cuppa and a chat where they will be warmly welcomed. At present we have 43 older people doing weekly
computer courses, that is 4 different classes each week, Community School beginners, 2 classes in the library and one in O’ Sullivan’s boardroom classes which are all six weeks if anyone is interested for signing up for classes in September contact me on 4363867. To date over 300 people have completed beginners computer classes in Douglas and we will continue as long as there is demand. Great credit must go to Douglas Community School especially Owen Casey, Aileen Goulding for their ongoing support, this is the fourth year running transition year students who share their computer skills with us oldies, the boys become the teachers and we become the students. On March the 28th we will join the students in the Annual Intergenerational Quiz for the Credit Union Perpetual Trophy, on each team we have 2 older and 2 students. It is fiercely competitive anyone who would like to take part contact me, it will be held in the Community School on March 28th incorporating Life Long Learning week. Our warmest birthday wishes go to our dear friend Nora Healy who is celebrating her 90th birthday this week; I had the privilege of attending a social mass for Nora in Lion house where Fr Sean, Nora’s Son said a beautiful mass. Nora is loved and cherished by her 5 sons and 3 daughters, grandchildren and great grand children. She is indeed a special friend and I thank her for her words of wisdom and encouragement along the way. Nora enjoy your celebrations!

Art Collection Donated to St. John’s Central College. A unique collection of art books and a compilation of newspaper articles, pamphlets, exhibition catalogues and other ephemera, which had been assembled by the late Dr. J.B.Kearney, have been donated to St. John’s Central College by his daughter, Mary Rose O’Driscoll, now also sadly deceased. Her daughters, Aifric and Dairin, were on hand to officially hand over the collection to the College at an unveiling of the works recently. Dr. Kearney had a passion for art and was involved in a number of art organisations including the Arts Council of Ireland, Friends of the National Collections of Ireland and the Cork Preservation Society. He also was well known for his support of up-and-coming artists, many of whom he knew personally. Speaking at the hand over event at the College, Bertie Og Murphy, said “The images and essays in this collection cover a huge range of topics from the Celts to the Masters, Moderism, Religious Art, Islamic Art and Art History. St. John’s is very proud to be chosen as guardians of this unique collection” “It was very kind of Mary Rose to donate the collection to us and it will help the College to encourage a love of art and inspire future generations of students” he concluded.

The ŠKODA GreenLine range includes the Octavia, Superb, Yeti and Fabia. The Octavia, Superb and Yeti GreenLine models are powered by a 1.6 TDI 105bhp diesel engine, while the Fabia receives a compact 3-cylinder 1.2TDI producing 75bhp. Both units allow for efficient fuel consumption without compromising on agility. Eco-friendly driving in Ireland has benefited hugely from the introduction of ŠKODA’s innovative GreenLine technology which delivers reduced CO2 emissions while maintaining driving performance. GreenLine models produce less than 120g/km of CO2 placing them in ‘Band A’ which is the lowest possible road tax and VRT category resulting in annual road tax of €160. Intelligent technologies in the GreenLine range include a start-stop system and brake energy recuperation which reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Further efficiencies are achieved thanks to elements such as tyres with lower rolling resistance, modified engine control units, recommended gear feature and aerodynamic modifications to the body and chassis.

The Delorentos have recently released a 12-track album, ‘Little Sparks’. They have also announced a full electric tour to co-incide. Recorded with Mercury Music Prize Award Winner Rob Kirwan (PJ Harvey), the 12 tracks are the fully-fledged fruits of the band’s recordings over 2011 and display a depth of songwriting prowess that ably eclipses the band’s first two albums and offers a real insight into the ever-growing potential of the band. It follows hot on the heels of the recent 4-track EP (of the same name) and was accompanied by a successful acoustic tour of Ireland (the band’s first ever). All of which signals a new approach by the band who are keen to embrace and share all aspects of their interests and skills from here onwards. The lads will play Cyprus Avenue this Saturday, doors are 8pm and tickets are €16. Also on this Saturday night is Keith Farnan at the City limits. Doors are 9pm and admission is €15. Having recently appeared on BBC’s Michael Mcintyre Comedy Roadshow, as well as his own show on RTE, Money, Money, Money; Keith Farnan versus the Economy, Keith will be debuting on Showtime in America this year on the new standup show, “Live From Amsterdam”. This new show brings together the best American and European comedians working today. Rarely does the entertainment industry miss an opportunity to make a quick buck but usually they wait till the dust has settled, not this time, Rihanna is reportedly in the running to play Whitney Houston in a film about the late singer’s life. Houston’s record label boss Clive Davis is said to be planning the project, and executives have created a shortlist of stars they are considering for the role. Other names that are on the shortlist are Jennifer Hudson, who performed a tribute to Houston at the Grammys, Independence Day star Vivica A Fox and American Idol singer Jordin
Spark Will Smith’s 11-year-old daughter Willow Smith is being lined up to play the singer as child. A source told press: “Clive wants to get the script done and start filming as soon as possible. Whitney knew about the project and was excited to see where it would lead. “It’s hoped the biopic will be as successful as Tina Turner movie What’s Love Got To Do With It, which landed two Oscar nominations for Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne.” Tom Jones is to make his acting debut opposite Alison Steadman and Brenda Blethyn in a new one-off TV drama. Jones will star in King of the Teds, which will be shown on Sky Arts in the spring. He will play Ron, a former factory worker and one-time top Teddy Boy who finds his life takes a dramatic turn when he is reunited with a friend from his younger days. Jones, who had a cameo as himself in Mars Attacks, is also one of the judges on the BBC’s new musical talent show The Voice. Brian May ‘doesn’t understand’ most modern music. The Queen star is widely thought of as one of the most talented guitarists in the world. The type of rock music he is famed for isn’t as popular as it once was, with dance and R&B tunes charting higher these days. Brian can’t fathom why tastes have changed so much. ‘I was driving around in the car and I had [UK music station] Radio 1 on and basically I don’t understand a lot. I think I’m too old to understand it,’ he laughed. Queen are set to play a series of shows later this year. American Idol star Adam Lambert will front the performances, in place of the late Freddie Mercury.

The Age of Coaching
I am still just about on the right side of age 60 but the hips are once again giving me some grief. I had both of them repaired about five years ago, which I understood was to be a ten-year job. For those who have not suffered let me say that there can be severe pain from continuous standing. In this situation coaching can be difficult especially if you are teaching drills involving stooping and bending. When striking or kicking a ball I would often say to the lads to send the ball in high – a low ball can be embarrassing for me and can make me feel rather foolish. Recollections ……….
One day at school, 46 years ago as the class were walking in an organised faction, I recall the teacher correcting me for the manner in which I was carrying myself – in other words my carriage was out of kilter. At the time I was very upset and took this as an insult – But of course he was right. I have always struggled with physical exercise. Truly I was not very flexible. For all my negatives I suffered very few injuries, and no real serious ones. I remember paying visits to a physio therapist (an ex. Boxer) and he used to put my foot into a wax bath. Then there was this other machine that made my leg twitch. I got a few injections from Dr. Con with which I was not exactly happy so I cancelled out. I also had a cartilage operation. Other than those injuries and a number of head stichings (no Mycro helmets then) I guess I didn’t do too bad. I played hurling until age 39 and football up to 44. ……….. and to the Present
In the context of the present day players are getting far more injuries at an earlier age. There are too many demands on them, especially those players between the ages of 18 and 21. There is too much expected of them. The young players for their part want to be part of each squad and these should be carefully advised. I met a young man recently who has had both hips repaired. Now there may or may not have been an underlying medical problem. There are other players who were forced to retire due to hip or knee problems. Groin injuries are another area of concern. There are trainers who are big into twisting and turning, which when done on a sandbased pitch is not always advisable. Why do we have fewer players over 30 years of age involved at club and intercounty level now than in previous

times? This area presents a challenge to those in official positions if they are interested. It’s likely that some of you, the readers, saw the letter to the Irish Examiner from former Cork senior footballer Diarmuid Duggan regarding injuries suffered during his playing career and the subsequent publicity that followed. I would imagine he is in his 30s. Duggan had some early surgery and was told that he would need a hip replacement in his early 40s due to all the knocks he got playing sports. He finished with the Cork panel in 2009. Looking Ahead
Listed below is what I believe will be the team to face Tipperary or Limerick in the Munster semi-final. Injuries may well effect some changes: Dónal Óg Cusack, S. McDonnell, D. Cahalane, B. Murphy, E. Cadogan, J. Gardiner, S. O’Neill, C. Naughton, P. Cronin, C. Lehane, N. McCarthy, C. McCarthy P. Horgan, P. O’Sullivan, B. O’Connor. Dr. Crokes vs. Crossmaglen
This was a most interesting and entertaining encounter. It was strange in that Crokes, playing against the wind were ahead at the interval. The Kerrymen got off to a great start but to the credit of the lads from Crossmaglen they reeled them in. The Armagh side played better football when they turned to play against the wind. In my opinion the first two goals for Cross should have been better defended. By his usually high standard the Gooch was disappointing. In contrast Eoin Brosnan was a colossus. For Crossmaglen Oisín McConville brought all his experience to bear and Aaron Kernan was very influential. The Armagh side had their captain Stephen Kernan red carded and their centre back went off injured at an early stage. This Crossmaglen outfit is one of the greatest teams ever. (Nemo might dispute this) They have won 13 county titles in the last 15 years, 5 allIrelands and 7 Ulster titles. As a Matter of Interest
The Hall’s visit to Rockenham Pk. to play under lights last Friday night proved fruitful following Chris Murphy’s winning goal midways through the second-half. Former Passage utility player Cathal Kenny was immense throughout for the winners. U-15 Local Cup Douglas Hall A 4; Leeds A 1
The Hall progressed to the last sixteen courtesy of goals from Oliver O’Sullivan , who opened the scoring following good approach work from Conor O’Leary on 20 minutes. Cal Sheehy added two more approaching half-time before Ian Dorney fired in a fourth with fifteen minutes left to play. In a fine team display, O’Leary, Colm Birmingham, Aaron Duggan, Paul O’Regan, Ronan Cooper, Mark McAuliffe & Fergus Hennessy were outstanding for this very impressive Hall outfit.
Daly Industrial Supplies Youths League 1A St. Mary’s 0; Douglas Hall 1
Mark O’Connor turned in the only goal of the game on the half hour to secure a second win on the road for a battling Hall outfit. O’Connor had a penalty brilliantly saved shortly afterwards before the hosts launched a second-half onslaught which was excellently repelled by the defiant back-four of keeper Ryan Kennedy, full-backs Stephen Cronin & Colin Downey along with central defenders Donnacha O’Neill & Alan Buckley. Ben Collins & Aaron Dold in the centre with the tireless Daniel Savage & debutant Niall O’Connor up front contributed handsomely to overturning a 6-0 drubbing by the same opposition earlier in the season. Kennedy’s remarkable penaltysave with five minutes remaining epitomized the commitment of all on the day.
Pfizer Pitch and Putt by Brendan Hayes
Saturday was a great day for the clubs juveniles they captured the the Cork U.16 league title. The final was played in Collins and was contested by Majestic and Pfizer(A). On a very well prepared course in the best of weather and in front of quite a large crowd, it was a very keenly contested final. Honours were shared in the foursomes and the singles line up promised some great excitement. The first four singles were shared and it came down to the last match which James Maher from Pfizer won on the 17th with a long putt to secure Pfizer’s 5th title in 6 years. The final was played in a fantastic sporting fashion with supporters from both sides appreciating a top class display from both sides. The club would like to thank Collins for their hospitality on the day and again the course was in excellent condition. Well done to captain Jack Howard and his team of Charlie Morrissey Fionn Murphy
James Maher Shane Livesey and Ruauri Mehigan. Juniors had another great win over Crosshaven 7 1/2 to 1 1/2 out in Lakewood but because of the way other results went they now have to play Majestic in a play-off to see who progresses into the semi finals. The Inters went down to Collins 5/4 but were already through to the semis. Saturday results :

College Corinthians AFC Under 13 Cup Corinthian Boys 6 Tramore Ath. 0
Corinthians made their way into the last 16 of the Local Cup after a comprehensive win over a gallant Tramore side. First half goals by James Holland and two by an energetic Eoin Davis gave Corinthians a comfortable lead at the break. Notwithstanding Corinthians lead Tramore did test both of Corinthians goalkeepers, Christian Begley and John Weir, who both showed a safe pair of hands when called upon. Corinthians increased their lead in the second half through goals from Arseni Lamonov, David O’Sullivan and Ciaran Couch. Team: Christian Begley, Mathew McAulliffe, Ciaran Couch, James O’Donovan, Dylan Ward, Bryan Hill, Arseni Lamonov, Stephen Fox, James Holland, Eoin Davis, David O’Sullivan, Alex Chandler, John Weir and Eoin Murphy. Corinthian Boys B 0 Leeds 2
Having made it to the last 32 the boys bowed out of the local cup against a strong Leeds side but they acquitted themselves well against the Premier Division outfit. All 15 Corinthians players worked tirelessly to ensure Leeds had to fight to end for victory. Liam McCarthy was solid as always between the posts commanding his area superbly. The back four of David Fischer, Brendan Powter, Jack Lyons and Dylan Virgo dealt with everything Leeds threw at them and were very unlucky to see a miss hit clearance loop over the keeper to put Leeds one up after 20 minutes. The midfield of Rory Kennedy, Paul Barry, David Harrington, Karl Hyde and Joe Cremin playing a holding role were quick to close down the
opposition, never allowing Leeds to settle on the ball while continuing to play the renowned Corinthians passing game. Daniel Hurley had the tough job of playing on his own up front but he covered the ground admirably and single handily pinned Leeds back into their own half on a number of occasions. The four subs were introduced in the second half and Davie Scott, Cameron White, Liam O’Sullivan and Adam Walsh joined the rest immediately in putting it up to Leeds. The premier side added a second after 40 minutes but a magnificent outing for the boys who will surely climb the table if they can repeat this performance in their remaining league games. Schoolgirls Section Under 18 Cup Wilton 0 Corinthian Girls 5
An excellent team performance from the girls to claim a spot in the local cup final, Goals from Megan Connolly (2), Laura O’ Brien, Kathlyn Hickey and Nicole Connolly as well as fine performances from Niamh Mc Greevy, Michelle O’ Regan, Niamh Kelly, Michelle Murphy, Leonie Mullins, Katie O’ Shaughnessy and (GK) Erin O’ Donovan.

Ballyphehane Community Bingo donates delivery van to Ballyphehane Meals on Wheels. Ballyphehane Meals on Wheels has been delivering hot meals to Seniors in the Ballyphehane and Turner’s Cross area of Cork City for nearly forty years and it’s estimated that over one million meals have been cooked and delivered in that time from their state of the art kitchen at Ballyphehane Community Centre. Now, thanks to the Community Bingo Committee, they have a brand new delivery van which will, according to head chef, Tony O’Leary, greatly assist the senior nutrition programme operated by the Meals on Wheels group in the area. Patrick O’Donoghue of the Ballyphehane Community Bingo said “We are delighted to support such a worthwhile local cause and I want to pay tribute to the patrons of the Bingo nights for their loyalty over the years and I know that they too are happy to know that their contributions have helped worthy community causes such as this.” The hand over took place at the Courtyard Café at the Ballyphehane Community Centre and comes at a time when many Meals on Wheels programmes across the Country are facing significant impacts due to loss of funding, state of the economy and lack of volunteers. However, the Ballyphehane Community Association members are looking to the
future with confidence, and gestures such as this will encourage the local volunteers to keep up the good work.
