The Word
by George Thompson - Editor
Bug Alert! I recently picked up a chest infection that has meant three trips to the doctor and three different courses of antibiotics as the first two didn’t work. Now, my voice is gone, so anyone who has said hello to me in passing recently and thought me quite ignorant in not replying, be assured I did say hello back albeit silently. There is a lot of sickness and bugs in the air at the moment so I would advise not to suddenly jump into your shorts and tee shirt at the first sign of sunshine but take it handily and stay wrapped up to a certain degree.
Easter - a time of Eggs and Caution! As the holiday period begins and the kids enjoy a break from school, I hope we see a return to the weather we had last week with soaring temperatures and sun. What better ingredients to fuel the feel good factor as we try to leave our trouble and woes to one side for a holiday break. Easter isn’t just a religious or easter egg occasion but a holiday weekend that heralds the onset of summer and it’s the time when people air their holiday homes, and put their boats in the water for the season. If the weather is exceptional, a lot of people will take to the water over the holiday and my former navy colleague John Leech, now with Irish Water Safety issued me with the following information regarding safety on and in the water over Easter.
Easter Holiday Drowning Risk Thousands of people will enjoy Easter bank holiday breaks on or close to waterways that pose a danger if safety is not heeded especially as there will be a Full Moon and some of the highest tides of the year. Irish Water Safety is pleading with the public to avoid tragedy by supervising children on holidays and exercising common sense around our shorelines, rivers and lakes.
children do not stray alone to septic tanks, quarries or riverbanks. Those boating over the holiday weekend will share their enthusiasm with swimmers, divers, anglers, canoeists, surfers and thousands more walking the shoreline. Walkers and shellfish pickers should be aware of the dangers of stranding posed by the spring tides. Those enjoying what is commonly their first boating trip of 2012 should ensure that every person on board wears a correctly fitting well maintained lifejacket with crotch strap. Cold-water temperatures are close to ten degrees at present. Most swimmers will not yet be acclimatized to such conditions and should not stay too long in open water. Alcohol is a contributory factor in approximately one-third of all drownings, therefore alcohol should not be consumed before or during aquatic activities. If you have not used your lifejacket since last year then you will need to carry out the neccessary checks. Emergencies - If you see someone in difficulty in the water dial 999 OR 112. Don’t assume someone else will make the call. For more information and details of water safety check out: www.iws.ie
Lastly! There is plenty of entertainment locally over the holiday weekend, if you are not travelling away and if you do drink – DON’T DRIVE! Have a great holiday everyone!

Children are attracted to water but can drown silently in seconds. It is critical that adults supervise children at all times. Visitors to rural homes should ensure that

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn
Of a poet’s technical resources, one of the most important is rhythm. It is connected with the most primitive, the most deeply ingrained impulses in our nature. You have only to consider the singing games of children or the tribal dances of primitive peoples or the rhythms of music to realise this. Rhythm is the very pulse of poetry. In this week’s poem Marion Rose Horgan of Cobh, treats us to a lovely example of rhythm in poetry. Marion is no stranger to this column and we have often featured poems from her highly entertaining book “My Road”
MELODY OF LIFE I’m feeling in a minor mood, But I think that’s OK, ‘Cos there’s nothing major happening In my world today. Life can’t just be a symphony, Of movements loud and strong, Sometimes it’s a subtle tune That keeps me holding on. There won’t be perfect harmony, In the melody of life, There’ll be discord in the tune, And jarring notes of strife. And sometimes, in the solitude, I hear a plaintive air, Reflective tones that haunt me, With a rhythm rich and rare. Yes, life’s a complex melody, And, be it short or long, Its notes of rich diversity Create a wondrous song. A dance, a fugue, a lullaby, I know they all belong, Each one has its season, And suddenly….. they’re gone. Marion Rose Horgan Send your poem to ‘The Poetry Corner’ / Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas or you can email it direct to ronniemcginn@ eircom.net. If possible keep your poem to 20 lines. You may choose any subject you like, in any form you like as long as it’s original. We look forward to hearing from you. RonnieMcGinn

Clamping to be regulated by legislation A ban on clamping in particularly sensitive locations such as hospitals; a uniform and regulated appeals process; a national code of practice governing clampers on public and private property; and appropriate training for and vetting of clamping company staff are among a number of recommendations from the Committee on Environment, Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht. The report which has 38 specific recommendations was launched by Committee Chairperson Ciarán Lynch TD. Among the key recommendations and conclusions of the report are: • In order to clamp a vehicle an operator must be licensed and registered. • To obtain a licence, operators must be tax compliant, have a registered office, appropriate insurance cover, and be required to submit an annual report to the regulator. • A two-tier appeals process, comprising an initial appeal to the clamping company or authority itself, with subsequent recourse to a national independent Parking Appeals Officer. • Details of the appeals process must be immediately available on the issue of a fine or the fitting of a vehicle clamp. • There will be a mandatory code of practice for all clamping operators. • A specific period must be provided for the release of vehicle clamps and where that period is exceeded that the release fee be refunded. • Where a clamp has not been fully fitted by the time a motorist returns to their car, the clamper should immediately cease and release the vehicle. • Staff of clamping companies should be Garda vetted and receive appropriate training. • Release fees must be reasonable and clamping should not be used as a profit generating exercise. • There should be a graduated scale of release fee based upon the seriousness of the parking infringement. • Clamping operators be precluded from using premium rate or high rate telephone numbers for the release of clamps. This is the first time that a Committee has been asked to help draft Heads of a Bill and the report will now set out the framework for the drafting of legislation to regulate the vehicle clamping industry.

Sports Grant Cork South Central Fine Gael TD Jerry Buttimer has welcomed the announcement of a €30 million sports capital grant. Deputy Buttimer was speaking after Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring TD, announced the latest round of the funding programme. “I welcome the announcement by Minister Ring that he is making €30 million available as part of the sports capital grant programme. This is the first time in four years that sports capital funding has been made available. It will support the development of sports facilities and purchasing sports equipment for sports clubs and organisations. “Having modern facilities and proper equipment is an essential element in encouraging more people to take part in sport. If we are to counter the problems of obesity and inactivity we need to ensure we have facilities available for those who choose to take part in physical activities. “The Government has taken steps to make this round of funding more accessible than it previously was, the grants will be open to far more clubs and groups than ever before. The strict requirement on landownership has been relaxed, Minister Ring has decided that clubs that don’t own their own land will now be able to apply for grants of up to €25,000 to upgrade facilities. “The Government has also recognised fundraising difficulties sports organisations can face. The minimum amount of matching funding which clubs and organisations will need to provide themselves in order to apply for a grant has been halved from the previous round of the programme in 2008. The matching funding required is now only 15%. For groups in CLÁR areas this is reduced to a minimum of 10% and for those in RAPID areas it is reduced to a minimum of 5% of the project cost. “The deadline for online applications is Friday 1 June and for paper applications it is Friday 11 May. I would encourage all clubs and organisations thinking of applying to get their application in early so that their members can benefit from this round of funding.”

Young @ Heart by Phil Goodman
Of all the people the elderly or infirm living alone are the most vulnerable we encourage that group to avail of the 100% grant funded personal alert monitored alert scheme, these units are in many cases a welcome alternative to institutionalisation allowing the elderly, infirm, to retain their independence and freedom in their own homes secure in the knowledge that their link to the outside world is always with them, anytime, day or night one touch of a simple button is sufficient to get help, within seconds your call will be answered, the operator will know who you are the name and number of your doctor and those of your family you would like to be contacted nothing could be simpler or more effective . Older people should beware of bogus callers especially at this time of year. I believe people are going around to doors saying they are from City and County Councils and sent to collect the household tax, Gardai are advising people to take the usual security steps when somebody calls to their home, Always use the security chain when opening the door and never allowing uninvited trades people in unless they have photo “ID”. We can all play our part in ensuring our older neighbours are safe in their homes, keep a check on them especially in these challenging and uncertain times, making Douglas the best place to grow old in. Congratulations to Mary O’Callaghan, Bill Rohan, Community Guard Dan Cowman and student Shane, who won the Douglas Credit Union Perpetual Trophy in the Lifelong Learning
Inter-Generational Quiz , Runners Up were; Betty Syndenham, John Swanick, and students Adrian Dawes and Mathew Kasowski. Lord Mayor Terry Shannon joined in the fun by asking a round of questions, this is the 5th year Young at Heart and students from Douglas Community School pit their knowledge and skills against each other in a wonderful atmosphere trying to win the much coveted trophy and prizes. Believe me once the first round starts the intensity builds and you would not hear a pin drop. A special thank you to Phil O Murucu who provided all the questions and was Master of Ceremonies on the day. “Phil you are booked for next year P.G”. But of course the success of quiz goes to the Douglas Community School and the wonderful relationship Young at Heart enjoy with the school for the past 5 years. The Transition Year students have encouraged 370 older people to become less fearful of technology; they are now able to now able to keep in touch with family and friends at home and abroad. They provide 4 terms of classes each year two during Jan - May and two during Sept - Dec and still ongoing. Give me a call if you are interested in taking classes, our sincere thanks to teachers Owen Casey, Aileen Goulding and students for their ongoing commitments and support to our older people here in Douglas.
Thought for today “Love thy neighbours but don’t get caught” Cherish your yesterdays dream your tomorrows But be young at heart And live your today’s Bye for now Phil

Depression Depression is one of the most common health conditions in the world. Depression isn’t a weakness, nor is it something that you can simply “snap out of.” Depression, formally called major depression, is a medical illness that involves the mind and body. It affects how you think and behave and can cause a variety of emotional and physical problems. You may not be able to go about your usual daily activities, and depression may make you feel as if life just isn’t worth living anymore. Most health professionals today consider depression a chronic illness that requires long-term treatment, much like diabetes or high blood pressure.
How do I handle mum’s Alzheimer’s?
Symptoms Symptoms of depression include: Loss of interest in normal daily activities, Feeling sad or down, Feeling hopeless, Crying spells for no apparent reason, Problems sleeping, Trouble focusing or concentrating, Difficulty making decisions, Unintentional weight gain or loss, Irritability, Restlessness, Being easily annoyed, Feeling fatigued or weak, Feeling worthless, Loss of interest in sex, Thoughts of suicide or suicidal behavior, Unexplained physical problems, such as back pain or headaches. Depression symptoms can vary greatly because different people experience depression in different ways. A 25-year-old man with depression may not have the same symptoms as a 70-year-old man, for instance. For some people, depression symptoms are so severe that it’s obvious something isn’t right. Others may

feel generally miserable or unhappy without really knowing why. It’s not known specifically what causes depression. As with many mental illnesses, it’s thought that a variety of biochemical, genetic and environmental factors may cause depression.
Lifestyle and home remedies Depression generally isn’t an illness that you can treat on your own. But you can do some things for yourself that will build on your treatment plan. In addition to professional treatment, follow these self-care steps for depression: Take your medications as directed. Even if you’re feeling well, resist any temptation to skip your medications. If you stop, depression symptoms may come back, and you could also experience withdrawal-like symptoms. Learn about depression. Education about your condition can empower you and motivate you to

stick to your treatment plan. Pay attention to warning signs. Work with your doctor to learn what might trigger your depression symptoms. Make a plan so that you know what to do if symptoms return. Contact your doctor if you notice any changes in symptoms or how you feel. Consider involving family members or friends in watching for warning signs. Get active. Physical activity and exercise have been shown to reduce depression symptoms. Consider walking, jogging, swimming, gardening or taking up another form of exercise you enjoy. Avoid drugs and alcohol. Alcohol and illicit drugs can worsen depression symptoms. If you are showing some of the above symptoms, contact your G.P. for immediate evaluation. Things to do This Week Spring, will soon grow into an overwhelming display of nature’s power. As usual we’ll try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to you or to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.
Flower Garden Hard prune evergreen shrubs if not down earlier. Plant dormant dahlia tubers where they are to flower. Feed roses with a high-potash or special rose fertiliser. Finish planting evergreens by the end of the month. Paint perennial weeds in rock gardens precisely with a systemic weed killer wax stick.
Kitchen Garden Sow the first batch of Brussels sprouts, sprouting broccoli and winter brassicas in a nursery bed. Sow a last batch of broad beans in a shaded bed. Sow parsley, dill, coriander and other herbs outdoors. Erect polythene or fleece screens around carrot rows to deter root flies.

Sow hardy perennials in pots or trays in a cold frame, and prick out into small pots. Finish taking chrysanthemum cuttings, and pot on those already rooted. Take leaf cuttings of gloxinias, begonias, peperomias and streptocarpus. Harden oft bulbs that have flowered indoors, before planting outside. Keep all seedlings in good light, close to the glass, for sturdy growth.

Irish Open to tee up golf tourism bonanza for Northern Ireland THE Irish Open golf championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club in June will again put Northern Ireland firmly on the global golf map and provide a major boost to the local economy, according to Alan Clarke, Chief Executive of the Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB). NITB’s Alan Clarke said that work is underway to harness the economic benefits of golf to the Northern Ireland economy. “We’ve already seen a steep rise in visiting golf journalists over the last year and the return of the Irish Open is a major coup for the north coast and the whole of Northern Ireland. “The tournament is a crucial element of our golf and events tourism focus, part of the draft Tourism Strategy for Northern Ireland to 2020, which sets out plans to grow tourism here to a £1 billion industry, increase the number of visitors to 4.5 million and sustain 50,000 jobs.
“NITB’s primary objectives are to leverage the event to help grow domestic and overnight visitor numbers and spend, integrate it with the ni2012 Our Time, Our Place campaign, create a positive visitor experience for those who attend and build on the success of November’s MTV awards to further demonstrate Northern Ireland’s capability to host major international events. “The magnificent achievements of Darren Clarke, Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell have certainly raised the profile of Northern Ireland on the global golf circuit and we at NITB are determined to exploit their success fully for the benefit of Northern Ireland,” said Alan. For more information on accommodation offers for the Irish Open as well as details on Northern Ireland’s golf courses, check out the Northern Ireland Tourist Board’s free advice and booking service and callsave 1850 230 230, visit the Tourist Information Centre in Suffolk Street, Dublin 2 or click on www. ni2012.com.

Bus Éireann Begins Roll-out of 18 New Vehicles in Cork in €6m Investment in Public Transport Bus Éireann customers in Cork are now able to surf the Web for free on-board new vehicles that are being introduced on city and inter-city services. Bus Éireann has started the roll-out of 18 new vehicles for Cork with five new city buses going into service this week. The company plans to introduce the remaining vehicles over the coming weeks in a major enhancement of public transport for customers in the county. The 18 new vehicles for Cork include four double-deck city buses and 11 single-deck city buses for use on city services, which have been funded by the National Transport Authority. In addition, there will be three new Expressway coaches, which have been funded from Bus Éireann’s own resources, for use on inter-city services. All of the new vehicles come with free Wi-Fi and extra comfort seating. The new Expressway coaches also come with features such as power sockets at selected seats and Iso-Fix attachment points for compatible child safety seats making it easier for families to travel. The new Expressway coaches are also longer in length than current intercity vehicles and as a result can carry more passengers – 63 in total up from the current 53. A total of 88 new vehicles will be going onto Bus Éireann services across the country in the next few weeks. All the vehicles are Wi-Fi enabled, wheelchair accessible, and meet the highest EU emission standards. 60 of the new vehicles have been
funded by the National Transport Authority (NTA) at a capital cost of approximately €19m 28 coaches for use on Bus Éireann’s commercial Expressway inter-city services are being funded through the company’s own resources at an approximate cost of €12m. All the vehicles feature new extra padded comfort seats with the new 25th Anniversary Expressway seat covers produced by Irish company Botany Weaving. Ballymena-based bus builders Wrightbus of Northern Ireland were also involved in building the 35 new city bus and double deck buses. “These 18 new vehicles for Cork will enhance customer comfort and increase our capacity at peak-times. With features such as free Wi-Fi, power sockets and extra comfort seating they are sure to be hit with current customers and provide a real alternative for car users,” said Joe Fitzgerald, Regional Manager South, Bus Éireann. This investment in new fleet follows the recent introduction by the National Transport Authority, in conjunction with Bus Éireann, of realtime passenger information displays at selected city centre stops in Cork. Following the current live trial, it is hoped to roll-out the information displays to 47 of the busiest stops in the city. The Bus Éireann fleet replacement programme is in line with recommendations in the Deloitte report commissioned by the Department of Transport and best industry practice. The programme will reduce operational costs, improve efficiencies, enhance accessibility, and benefit the environment.

New Shoes By L. J. Wardell (USA) Anne is six years older than me. Growing up, we were very poor, and my mother worked evenings at a factory in a small midwestern town. Not seeing my mother much, Anne took over much of the maternal support, and she was awarded the authority to give me and my younger sister permission to do things. Actually, going to Anne was much better than going to a parent as she could award permission, but never had an urge to punish us when we broke the rules. Therefore, we were a bit more willing to confess our activities to Anne and sometimes benefited from her sisterly advice. During those turbulent teenage years, Anne was always there for me, not only as a big sister, but as a mother and my best friend. When I was seventeen and had no money, I thought my only chance of going to college was if I could win a scholarship. I had an important interview for such an award. Anne at that time was struggling, surviving on a part-time job as she put herself through the local community college after serving in the army. I told her of my interview, that General Motors was sending me a bus ticket, and I would get to visit the city for my scholarship interview. It would be the first time I ever saw a city. I was excited about the adventure and asked her advice on what to wear. I showed her my best outfit and how I planned to be careful how I sat so that the hole in the bottom of my shoe would not be seen, but I wasn’t sure what I would
do if it rained. I showed her how I would stand with my arm slightly in front of me to hide the blemish from my factory-second pants from the farmers’ market. My best blouse was a find at a yard sale, slightly faded but still pretty. Anne suggested that we go shopping, and we took the bus to the JCPenney store. She took me to the shoe department, and we found a beautiful pair of leather shoes on sale. She told me to try them on, but I thought it was just for fun as neither of us had ever owned anything that expensive before. Sometimes we did go shopping together and tried on things just to see what they looked and felt like, but we never could afford to buy them. It was like playing dressup. But this time was different. Anne handed me the boxed shoes and said, “Here, I’ll buy these for you.” “But . . .” was all I could say. “You deserve them,” she replied. “This interview is important. I want to see you get that scholarship.” I was speechless as I knew this was a lot of money for her, and she would probably have to eat nothing but ramen noodles for at least a month. I went to the interview and crossed my legs so that my beautiful new shoes shone with pride. I won the scholarship and became an engineer. Although they were nice leather everyday shoes, I didn’t wear them much because they were so special. I hope Anne didn’t think I did not like them or something. Now, after twenty years have passed, I still have that pair of shoes with me, and I just wear them on those little occasions when I need to feel special. It’s kind of like having magic ruby slippers when you’re homesick.

G.A.A. FOCUS By Pat Harrington Snippets from the local and National Scene Newtown and Ben
My first visit to Newtownshandrum was in the ‘80s. Douglas intermediate team played the local lads in a league game. They had only one pitch at the time and very little stood out about the Newtown team that night. The next occasion was at an under 12 tournament where Ollie Tobin pointed out The Baron (Father of Ben & Jerry) to me. The next time I had contact with the North Cork club was the occasion of an under 12 county semi-final. We travelled to Glantane for the game; Newtown went to Glounthaune. As it turned out we were at the correct venue. The Baron rang and asked if we would wait for them to arrive. We did, and won by 7 goals. Newtownshandrum is in the north Cork Barony of Duhallow, almost on the Limerick border and is one hell of a cold spot. The club now has a second pitch, sand based and with floodlights. Yet if you sneezed when passing through the village you could miss it. The breakthrough for Newtown was winning the intermediate title. They also won under 21 county titles. They have won 4 senior county titles in the last decade along with Munster club championships. For a club of its size and with limited resources they have achieved great success. It is sad to hear of the retirement of Ben O’Connor, a man with skill levels as good as any and better than most. He could create magic with the ball on the hurl, and this could only have come about with a lot of practice. He was able to do this at great pace. The uncanny way that Ben could pick out his brother Jerry on the field and vice versa was a pure joy to watch. He gave Cork and his club the best years of his life. Hip, Hip ………
My son decided to make some fun of me by announcing to the world
through Facebook that I had been on a strict training regime for the Paddy’s Day parade and he wondered if the hips would hold out for the duration. Well, the good news is that I survived the experience and all the Street Leagues boys behaved themselves to make it a very enjoyable day. Football
The only county assured of a semifinal spot in Division one of the football league is Kerry. Cork are second on the table with three points less. The last game for The Rebels is at home to Dublin who were defeated by Mayo in a replay of the match which was earlier abandoned due to fog. Down and Mayo are level with Cork on six points, Armagh have five points. Donegal and Laois are on four points. It has been a competitive if inconsistent league. The league semifinals should see Kerry, Dublin, Cork and possibly Down in contention. Hindsight is a great thing, but the league cost Cork dearly last year so I don’t see it as the end of the world if we fail to qualify for the 2012 league semi-final. I believe Cork without the league would be a fresher team going into the championship. Having got through the league they will need to get Sheehan and Goulding back into the forward division. Aidan Walsh at full forward is a work in progress. Some Fine Achievements
Congrats to Billy Mac on winning the Douglas heat of the over 60s. Billy now goes on to represent Douglas in the semi-final to be held in the City Hall on 15th. April. I’m sure his wife Teresa, his daughter, three sons and the grandchildren are very proud of his achievement. Well done to young Douglas man Martin Barry on receiving a Garda Youths Award for his contribution to the community. Martin has a huge involvement in sport as a player, coach and referee.

Mondello Park was the venue for the Irish Clubmans Championship which saw the largest Cork entry in many years. All the usual Cork suspects were on hand and included Declan Swanton, Paudie Keohane, Paul Tobin and Gerry Coleman along with newcomers Killian Quilter, Scott Fitzgerald, Noel O Flynn, Dave Power, John Horgan, Donal Curtin and Noel Quinn who kick started their short circuit racing careers. Also returning to racing was Dave Coughlan from Youghal, the former TT racer wasted no time in getting back in the groove on his Supertwin machine. The county Kildare venue was soaked in sunshine as the racing got under way with the 125cc class as 16 year old newcomers Killian Quilter (Inishannon) and Scott Fitzgerald (Upper Glanmire) finished 4th and 9th respectively. Next up was was the SuperSport race with Paudie Keohane (Kileady) in action on his Yamaha R6 with a top 10 finish. The new Class this season is for pre injection 600cc machines, Declan Swanton put his SBK Bikes Yamaha on pole position in this one and the Carrigaline man fought off Andrew Brady for the win and is now surely one of the favourites to win this championship in 2012. In the national open race
again saw Declan on a Yamaha R6 and Paul Tobin also from Carrigaline on his V Mobile sponsored Kawasaki 650cc machine. Swanton finished in 4th position in this one with Tobin up against much quicker 600 and 1000cc machines finishing in a very respectable 15th position as a warm up for his Supertwin championship which starts next weekend in Bishopscourt. One noticeable absentee was Ballinhassig man Sean Hurley who was tragically killed in a car accident last November. The former 600cc Irish Clubmans champion and current Adelaide Masters Cup champion was remembered with a parade lap by all the riders in his honour. The lap was started by Sean’s girlfriend Sinead who waved the green flag to get the lap under way, watched by Sean’s parents Dave and Mairéad. Leading out the riders were Sean’s close friends Declan Swanton, Paul Tobin and Paudie Keohane. It was a fitting tribute to a great Cork sportsman and general nice guy who will be sadly missed in the paddock for his good humour and great riding skills on track - RIP #109. Next up for these rebel riders is the Adelaide Masters races again in Mondello Park on the 21st and 22nd of April.
