Anthony O’Sullivan It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Anthony O’Sullivan last week, after a short illness. I have known Anthony and the O’Sullivan family of Gartan Park since the early 70s which made it a more bitter pill to swallow at the death of a young man whose main interest in life apart from his own family, was sport. A stalwart of Douglas Hall FC and St. Columbas Hall, Anthony was a true Douglas man and will be sadly missed by his family, many friends, team and club mates. Our sincerest sympathies go out to his wife and family at this time.

Bikes and Basketball this June weekend As the June bank holiday weekend quickly approaches there are many events and festivals happening to whet the appetite. Cruising, chrome and plenty of craic… it can only mean one thing! Killarney is gearing up for Ireland Bike Fest 2012 which takes place from June 1st to 4th. Upwards of 40,000 visitors from around the world will converge on Killarney for Ireland’s motorcycle and music extravaganza where a carnival party atmosphere is guaranteed. It is Ireland’s largest free open biker festival – all makes, models and manner of bikes are welcome, no registration is required and admission is free to The Bike Village which is party central, located in the grounds of The Gleneagle Hotel and INEC Killarney. While if you plan on staying put in Cork for the holiday weekend then the Mardyke Arena is the place to be as Fr. Mathew’s Division I ladies basketball team take on the best of American college basketball. This promises to be a cracker of a game and will appeal to everyone alike. The game takes place on Saturday June 2nd - doors open at 4:00pm and the game will tip off at 4:30pm. This is one not to be missed and admission is just €3 for adults and €1 for anyone under 18.

Congratulations! Well done to the Douglas Young at Heart group who completed their first ‘Cruise’ recently. The group sailed around the Med visiting cities in Italy and Spain and as Phil Goodman told me during the week, no one got lost in transit – all 44 returned safely. This week the group paid a visit to the Lord Mayor of Belfast and will continue their illustrious travels throughout the summer.

Review of PET scanner at CUH will be concluded shortly Fine Gael Cork South Central TD and Chairman of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Health and Children, Jerry Buttimer, has been informed by the VHI that it hopes to shortly conclude its review of an application to cover the PET/CT scanner at CUH. “I have made direct contact with VHI asking that it reconsider providing cover for the PET/CT scanner which has been gathering dust in the CUH for three years. Thankfully VHI confirmed that it is carrying out a review of the application and that it hopes to have the review concluded shortly. I encourage the VHI to prioritise the review and to ensure that its Cork customers have access to the same facilities that are available in Dublin. “Management at CUH has engaged a third party provider, using an alternative service delivery model, to make this service available to public patients from later this month. However, while public patients will have access to the PET scanner there will now be two referral pathways for Cork patients depending on their insurance status. “The Minister for Health, James Reilly, TD, has made it clear that his long term aim is to end this two tier system, ensuring equal access regardless of ability to pay. If we are to achieve equal access to health services then access to essential facilities should not be decided on based on whether or not a patient has insurance. “The PET scanner provides an important service which has the potential to benefit the entire southern region. Universal access to the PET scanner will help the long term viability of this service and it will also deliver the maximum benefit to all patients of the €6.85 million investment in the treatment and diagnostic facility. “Private insurers have an obligation to provide their customers with convenient access to cutting edge diagnostics and treatment. It is imperative for patients across south Munster that the private health insurers live up to their responsibilities and facilitate their customers in accessing the PET scanner at CUH.”

Active Retired The Carrigaline Active Retirement Association enjoyed another great day out last Thursday when they visited Griffins Garden Centre in Dripsey. They left Carrigaline at 11.00 am got a short talk on gardening at Griffins where they stayed for lunch. On the return journey CARA visited Blarney where they spent the remainder of the evening before returning in great spirits to Carrigaline. Damhsafest 2012 Plans for this year’s DamhsaFest are progressing favourably. International Folk Dancers from America, Russia, Finland Philippines, Togo and Wales are expected to join with the Irish dancers for the annual festival, which takes place from July 25th to 29th. Fitness Awareness To highlight the availability and benefit of the outdoor gym which was installed in the town park last year a fitness promotion day is organized for this Thursday 24th. Local football star Nicholas Murphy and other sport personalities will demonstrate the equipment while local sports therapist Brendan O’Driscoll will be on hand to give advice.

The Men’s Shed A group of men from Carrigaline Men’s Shed are travelling to the Men’s Shed in Gorey this Saturday on a fact-finding mission. They are travelling by coach from Middleton with Shedders from Carrigtwohill, Cobh, Midleton and Youghal. Last Friday a number of men from the Midleton Shed who called to see the Carrigaline Men’s Shed were well impressed with the great welcome and

Men’s Shed Progress on the cleaning, painting and refurbishment of the Carrigaline Men’s Shed is continuing slowly but surely. Work on the kitchen cum dining room is now complete and up and running. It is fitted out with a refrigerator, cooker, kettle, table and chairs and all the necessary kitchen utensils. The reception area where members can sit, chat and relax, read the paper, or listen to the radio is nearly finished. On the outside some storm water drainage work is being carried out while a ramp to facilitate wheelchair access is being constructed. Interested men over 18 years of age are welcome to join; the Shed will be open at present every Tuesday and Wednesday from 11.00 am to 1.00pm. Seen, Read + Heard by Michael O’Hanlon This week’s piece is totally different from previous ones. I want to write about something which is close to my heart – the subject being music, and the power of it. Most of us are familiar with the creeping sickness Alzheimer’s, also known as Dementia. In the U.S.A. 5.6 million people are inflicted with it and the experts are saying that by the year 2030 it will increase to 16 million, due to the Baby Boomers era of the late 50s. A few years ago, I met a band from Scotland who playing in the local Shopping Centre. We got talking and they told me that they played music for the old folks in hospitals, rest homes etc. They were paid by a local charity and/or the Health Board. I approached local business people and asked if they would sponsor the band to entertain the elderly. I must mention the Shipton Group, owners of the local shopping centres, who sponsored 10 concerts. These guys in the band are not just great musicians but the interaction with the patients was awesome. Old people languishing in wards expressionless until the music began, then a smile, foot tapping, handclapping, some danced, nurses waltzing with patients in wheel chairs, it was a joy to behold and then it was on to the next venue.

People with Alzheimer’s do not enjoy television, radio, present day pop music. They love music from an era when they were young. It takes them back and brings contentment whilst the music is playing and gives some peace to the carer and family members. I wish I had written the following piece, but I didn’t. It was written about 340B.C. BY Plato and it says it all: “Music is moral law, It gives a soul to the Universe, Wings to the mind, Flight to the imagination, A charm to sadness And a gaiety and life to everything. It is the essence of order And leads to all that is good, true, and beautiful”

This is where the power of music shines through; people sit or lie there who don’t know who they are or who their family members are, but there is facial recognition of close family members. Sadly at this time there is no cure for Alzheimer’s but there is a time of respite and comfort for the sufferers and their families. Actually everybody involved is a victim of this disease, some can handle it, some can’t, that’s the sad part. Many years ago, when I was a DJ, I had a gig playing in a Cobh pub. I still remember they served Crubeens during the break, and I put on a slow song “The Three Bells” or also known as “Jimmy Brown”. A woman approached me with tears in her eyes and said “Thank you for that song, it reminds me of my late mother, who used to sing me to sleep with it”. Music gives back a memory. A few years ago, one of my grandchildren, the child was 4 or 5, and couldn’t or wouldn’t sleep. Somebody mentioned “Calpol”, I said no and recommended a 40 watt light bulb and a shade and I made a compilation CD of children’s lullabies with songs such as “Scarlet Ribbons” , “Puff the Magic Dragon”, “Hush Little Baby” and more. The child was sleep in ten minutes - the power of music.

Science Camps link with Two Secondary Schools in Tanzania. Science Camps is a new summer camp for Cork children aged 7-15 years with six locations in Cork City and © County. The camps combine LEGO Robotics, CSI Science, Snap Circuits and Experiments. Sciencecamps also have an option of Adventure & Science where kids get to do a range of adventure sports in addition to © the Science & LEGO . This week Science Camps are delighted to announce details of their link with Oysterbay Secondary School and Kenton High School in Tanzania. The camps will run from June 18th to Aug 17th in the Lifetime Lab, Douglas GAA Hall, The Glen Resource Centre, Mallow-GAA Complex, Fermoy-Adair Hall and Blackwater Castle, Castletownroche. All camps are run over four days with a special final fun science day in Adair Hall, Fermoy on Aug 17th which will feature the StarDome from Blackrock Observatory. There are two types of camp: Future Techie (7-10 yrs) which cost €80 and Adventure & Science (8-15 yrs) which cost €110 and €89. The Adventure & Science camp is more expensive as ziplining, zorbing and archery

are included in the programme. All © students get to use LEGO Robotics: © LEGO WeDoTM for the younger © kids and LEGO MindstormsTM for children aged 10+. Camps running in The Lifetime Lab, Douglas GAA Hall and Castletownroche will link up with Oysterbay Secondary School and Kenton High School in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Both schools participated in the inaugural Young Scientist Tanzania Exhibition last year and the aim is to run some experiments concurrently between the Cork and Tanzania. Minister Sean Sherlock notes, “Learning about science and maths in a fun interactive and experimental environment will help kids as they progress through the education system. These camps are really innovative and creative and will allow young people to learn to appreciate science and maths in new ways. It is great to see this happening within our local communities.”

Poets are the pioneers and explorers in the world of feeling. Wherever you End yourself in that world, a poet may have been there before you. He will not have had your precise emotions not experienced exactly your problem; but his experience will have had enough in common with yours for you to feel supported and reassured by what he has written. One hundred years ago Irish nationalism was at its peak, and a search for a national identity and purpose was raging; at a crossroads of history and culture, Ireland was jolted by various converging ideas and influences it was at this crossroads James Joyce wrote “Dubliners” a collection of fifteen short stories capturing the experiences, self-understanding and illumination of the Dublin people during that time. In this week’s poem by Dave Jordan of the Ballinlough Writers Group, we get not just a glowing admiration of Joyce and Dubliners but a warm tribute from a fresh and enduring perspective.

Ballinlough Community News With Mary Cremin Ballinlough Scout Group The 38th/40th Cork Ballinlough Scout Group visited the Lord Mayor, Cllr Terry Shannon in the City Hall on 16th May. After a reception in the Council Chamber the Lord Mayor described his time as a scouts in Ballinlough and recalled the friends he made. The Group made presentations of a 38th Cork neckerchief, (the Lord Mayors old troop), a scout whistle, a scout penknife. The Lord Mayor was then quizzed on some merit badges and was awarded a special framed Public Speaking & Civics merit badge. He then invited all the scouts into his office and gave them a tour and asked them all to sign the visitors book. The Lord Mayor took time to chat the scouts and answer their questions.

Douglas Tidy Towns Musical Evening at Rochestown Park Hotel At enormous expense (€10 per ticket), Douglas Tidy Towns are organizing a “Musical Evening with Sing-Along” on Friday next, 25th May 2012 at 8 p.m. at Rochestown Park Hotel. It will be a real banish-the-blues night and will include a variety of performances, including Douglas Church Choir, a Sing-Along of pop and folk songs played and introduced by a band of 5 local musicians; a young, talented upand-coming Soprano, Ann O’Sullivan will be singing. Well-known Cork musician and choral director, David O’Sullivan, who plays regularly at the Choral Festival Club each year, is a wonderful pianist, and is great for getting an audience to sing their hearts out. Sean O’Se of ‘An Puc ar Bhuile’ fame will be the MC for the evening, so it will be the most ‘happening’ event of the month. Tidy Towns will not be getting any funding from Cork Co. Council this year so have to raise all the money for plant displays themselves. They are determined the show will go on and that Douglas will be as gorgeous as ever for this year’s Tidy Towns Competition. They are a wonderful, committed group of volunteers who clean up Douglas every Saturday morning and its an opportunity

Douglas Community Preschool Last week was Teddy Bear week a highlight of our school year! Each day our furry friends were brought along to preschool to participate in fun and games culminating in our Teddy Bears Picnic… we beat the weather by having it on rugs in the Community Hall! Hair loss Your hair loss may have started with a few extra hairs in the sink or in your comb. But now you can’t look in the mirror without seeing more of your scalp. Baldness typically refers to excessive hair loss from your scalp and can be the result of heredity, certain medications or an underlying medical condition. Anyone — men, women and children — can experience hair loss. The medical term for hair loss is alopecia. Pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia), the most common type of alopecia, affects roughly one-third of men and women. It’s typically permanent. Other types of alopecia are temporary, including

alopecia areata. It can involve hair loss on your scalp or other parts of your body. Your hair goes through a cycle of growth and rest. The course of each cycle varies by individual. But in general, the growth phase of scalp hair, known as anagen, typically lasts two to three years. During this time, your hair grows about 1 centimeter (just less than 1/2 inch) a month. Dementia currently affects almost 40,000 people in Ireland each year with a further 50-000 Carers and hundreds of thousands of family members also affected. With Irelands ageing population these figures are expected to double over the next 20 years.Dementia affects 1 in 20 over the age of 65 and 1 in 4 over the age of 80. People with Alzheimer’s and other dementias have no short term memory - they can only live in the past. If you try to force them to live in our world - in the here and now they can become agitated and upset, instead of arguing with them, give reassurance, hugs, smiles, avoid these words “no, don’t, stop, you cant,” use these words when possible “thank you, yes, good and ok”. How you relate has a big impact on course of the disease. It is important for family caregivers to try and understand why a person with dementia behaves in a aggressive or agitated manner as most of the time the person is reacting to something that happened to them, for example; invading a personal space can result in defensive behavior. People with dementia may wander for a number of reasons, this s where the person repeatedly attempts to leave their home even though they have lived there for many years, this more often happens in the evening time and is referred to as “Sundowning Behavior”. In that case a person with dementia may say they need to get home and often mean their childhood home. Activities should be about pleasure and success not challenging the person, things that gave the person pleasure and made them laugh, music is a great therapy especially songs and music from days past. We will also visit the birthplace of the Titanic and experience the story from Belfast in the early 1900s. We will travel by coach with a overnight stay. Extra springboard places to help 6,000 more people get back to work Deputy Ciarán Lynch has welcomed the announcement of an additional 6,000 part–time higher education places for those who are unemployed as an example of state activation to meet the unemployment challenge. Commenting on the announcement Ciarán Lynch TD said, “Since its launch as part of the Government’s Jobs Initiative last May, Springboard has already supported almost 5,000 people who had previously worked in areas such as construction and manufacturing to up-skill and retrain to work in areas with high potential for growth. Now with this announcement, a further 6,000 places will be provided to meet identified skills needs in areas such as ICT, Medical Devices, Entrepreneurship and the Green Economy. “The eligibility criteria for applicants have also been expanded to include people who were previously self-employed and others in receipt of an extended number of social welfare payments. One of the main driving points of Springboard is the need to activate every organ of the state to tackle unemployment. The state needs to be proactive and I believe Springboard provides a practical example of this as the Department has identified the skills needs and then provided the training places to meet them.

Interested in finding out more on the Old Cork-Blackrock and Passage Railway Line? Cllr. Kieran McCarthy, local historian, will conduct a tour of the old line on Thursday morning, 31 May 2012 starting at 10.15am at the entrance on The Marina side adjacent the Main Drainage station of the Amenity Walk. The tour is free (approx 1 1/2 hours) and is being run in association with Mahon CDP, Mahon Walking Group and the Bealtaine Festival. The event is free and is open to all. Cllr. McCarthy noted: “South east Cork City is full of historical gems; the walk not only talks about the history of the line but also the history that surrounds it. It is also a forum for people to talk about their own knowledge of local history in the ward. The walk also forms an important amenity walk through the south east ward.” The Cork Blackrock and Passage Railway, which opened in 1850, was among the first of the Irish suburban railway projects. The original terminus, designed by Sir John Benson was based on Victoria Road but moved in 1873 to Hibernian Road. The entire length of track between Cork and Passage was in place by April 1850 and within two months, the line was opened for passenger traffic. In May 1847, low embankments, which were constructed to carry the railway over Monarea Marshes (Albert Road-Marina area), was finished. In Blackrock, large amounts of material were removed and cut at Dundanion to create part of the track there. Due to the fact that the construction was taking place during the Great Famine, there was no shortage of labour. A total of 450 men were taken on for the erection of the embankments at the Cork end of the line. Another eighty were employed in digging the cutting beyond Blackrock. Know Your Rights A: Claiming Child Benefit Question: How do I apply for Child Benefit for my new baby and when will it be paid? Answer: When you register a birth in Ireland, the baby is allocated a Personal Public Service (PPS) Number. The Department of Social Protection automatically starts a claim for Child Benefit if the birth is registered within three months: If you are not already getting Child Benefit for another child, the Department creates a new claim and sends you a partially completed claim form for your signature and payment details. This form also tells you how to claim for your new baby online. (Please note that you can only claim online if the Department invites you to do so.) If you are already getting Child Benefit, your new baby is automatically added to your existing claim and payment begins from the month after the birth. The Department will send you a letter confirming payment. If your child is not born in Ireland, or the birth is not registered within three months, you must fill in a Child Benefit

form (CB1). Send the completed form by FREEPOST to the Child Benefit Section, Social Welfare Services, Department of Social Protection, St Oliver Plunkett Road, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal. Lo-call: 1890 400 400. Child Benefit is paid from the month following your baby’s birth. It is paid on the first Tuesday of every month. If there is any delay in processing your application the payment will be backdated to when you first applied. The family then moved to Australia, where the group released their first single, The Battle of the Blue and the Grey, in 1963. They had their first UK number one with Massachusetts in 1967. With their contributions to the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack the Bee Gees became superstars, with album sales giving them the same industry clout as the Rolling Stones or Pink Floyd. In 1988, Andy Gibb, the youngest brother who was also a singer, died aged 30.

Bee Gees singer Robin Gibb, who with twin brother Maurice and older brother Barry helped define the disco era, has died following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 62. Robin Gibb’s musical career began when he formed the Bee Gees with Barry and Maurice in 1958. The Bee Gees are credited with defining the disco era, selling more than 200 million albums, with hit songs spanning six decades including How Deep Is Your Love, Night Fever and You Win Again. The group also wrote tracks for artists including

Maurice Gibb died in January 2003, aged 53, of complications resulting from a twisted intestine, a condition that Robin Gibb also suffered from. During bowel surgery 18 months ago, a tumour was discovered, and he was diagnosed with cancer. His gaunt appearance led to media speculation that he was seriously ill, but in February he spoke of a “spectacular” recovery and later that month performed on stage for the last time at a charity concert in London. But he became ill again and was unable to attend the world premiere of The Titanic Requiem, his first classical work written with son Robin-John. Robin-John told Reuters at the event that his father had worked on much of the requiem while in hospital.

Family Ties with Geraldine Blake

Oh to be in Cork now that summer is here I was babysitting my dad for the weekend as my mum went to London for my brother’s daughter’s communion and was prepared for a sedate two days. My father only watches RTE so I was obliged to watch the Late Late which I feel hasn’t been same since Gaybo retired. My parents have a lovely garden which I was quite content to sit in but my son had a match in Cobh so we dragged ourselves along. We got lost several times and tempers were deteriorating rapidly as we got more hot and bothered trapped inside an airless car when suddenly we came across the pitch perched on a hillside overlooking the sea on a glorious Saturday morning. On Sunday, my sister had a fit to go swimming so we sat under an apple tree in the Anglers Rest for lunch and afterwards, we left my dad in the shade with his Sunday papers to find a place to swim. We crossed the road, cut through the car park and entered a field snowing with dandelion seeds and followed the track to find a river bank full of travellers with their horses and dogs. My first instinct was to run but my sister was

completely unfazed. She flapped out her towel on the stones where we sat demurely and watched the antics of Francie dragging his horse into the river ‘for a swim’, while his friends oblivious to the freezing water dived into the river terrifying the fish with their belly flops. The dogs were no bigger than rats and were resigned to being picked up by tiny toddlers and flung into the water. There was a four day old foal that looked a dog with an oversized head that was obviously adored. Everybody seemed to be called Francie; there was lots of good natured slagging and they didn’t mind the audience. I could have sat there all day. We then went to Fountainstown which was mobbed with half of Cork down there already. The tide was well in and everybody was forced to sit on the stones. Because of my freckly skin I fry in the sun and slathered sunblock in all my sensitive areas but forgot my right arm which was exposed to sun while driving. Today I have one pink arm which looks like an undercooked sausage but that’s an Irish summer for you - lobster skin: we rush out to greet the sun because we never know when it will be back again.

In the middle of a court fight to determine whether South Carolina’s Voter Identification law is Constitutional (so far: no), Kevin Shwedo, director of the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles, announced that “more than 900” people listed in state records as deceased have “recently voted” in elections. “If you have voted after you are dead,” Shwedo told reporters, “there is a good, strong possibility that you did something illegal.” (RC/AP) ...On the other hand, surely the dead would do a much better job of electing honest representatives.

As always we’ll try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Flower Garden Rejuvenate top-heavy shrubs and climbers such as roses now that growth is vigorous; bend stems down or prune to height. Finish bedding out with the most tender plants, such as cannas and ricinus. Deadhead lilac as the flowers fade. Cut back oriental poppies to ground level after flowering. Pinch out the tips of chrysanthemums to encourage more flowering stems to develop. Clip senecios and other flowering evergreens, if blooms are not required. Deadhead pansies and violas regularly to prolong flowering. Watch out for clematis wilt, and treat promptly if seen. After flowering hard prune shrubby prunus species such as P. triloba to 8-10cm (3-4in) high.

G.A.A. FOCUS By Pat Harrington Snippets from the local and National Scene This is my second time writing this article. I didn’t wish to appear so critical; I thought it important to provide some balance. It’s easy to jump on the bandwagon and to be critical of the Cork minor hurlers when they lose; ten years is a long time without success. The results/ performances over the past two years have really shown Cork on a downward spiral. As I wrote previously the game between Cork and Limerick was of a very poor standard. After the Cork vs. Clare game the former Clare senior hurling manager Ger Loughnane declared “I didn’t think it was possible for them to be so bad, Cork were deplorable”. He questioned if Cork were putting in the work at this age level. A press report stated that Cork had been very successful last year at under 14, 15 and 16, declaring that the future looked very bright for Cork hurling. Perhaps it is a little early for these players to be coming through. One wonders if the best players are being selected. Do the mentors appointed have the necessary knowledge of players in the urban areas? I’m told that all this years selectors are from the country – no city representative. Are the divisions represented? We are told that a number of former Cork players are coaching at different levels. Surely these people should have a very good knowledge of the situation. Perhaps it is time to recognise that Cork hurling is not up to the required standard. Of course the halcyon days of The Mon and Farrana are long gone and we in Cork tend to be ultra-conservative and afraid of change. Why not take a leaf out of the Waterford and Dublin schoolbooks and have northside and southside Harty Cup teams. Join up schools

north of the Lee together and form one team. Likewise the schools south of the Lee. To be blunt but fair Cork hurling is but a pale shadow of its former self, but it can improve. To put it mildly the county championship threw up some shocks; not least the victory of Bishopstown over Nemo Rangers which went to a replay and two periods of extra time. Over the years the Town have flattered to deceive. Perhaps Brian Cuthbert has brought a bit of steel to this team. The draw could well determine if they will make an impact on the championship. They may not play again for at least ten weeks. Ballincollig’s victory over Illen Rovers was very impressive. With Podsy O’Mahony at the helm they have been very solid this season, despite having lost a few players through emigration. St Finbarr’s are a very good outfit and will be in the shake-up. Last year’s beaten finalists Castlehaven will expect to be in the mix. Douglas were not tested by Na Piarsaigh but will need to tighten up in defense. The divisional side Carbery will have a very strong panel. At the other end of the championship the burning question is who will be relegated? For my money I think it will be between St. Nick’s and Na Piarsaigh, both of whom have thus far struggled in league and championship.

Fr. Mathew’s Division I Ladies v USAAI College All-Stars

Fr. Mathews Basketball Club are delighted to announce that our Ladies Division I team will play host to USA Athletes International (USAAI), a top college touring side whose players are made up of NCAA Div III and Div I players. The USAAI side are touring Ireland in late May and early June and will be in Cork on the 1st and 2nd of June and are delighted to announce confirmation of this fixture between Fr. Mathew’s and USAAI. The tie will take place on Saturday 2nd June at the Mardyke Arena. The doors open at 4:00pm and the game will tip off at 4:30pm. It will be a fantastic day for the club and are encouraging all club members to attend the game to cheer on their

I.I.B.A. Short Mat Bowls Results and Fixtures (Cork Zone) by Michael J.O’Shaughnessy St. Vincent’s Bowls Club staged the final session (last 12) of their Annual Licensed Triples Competition for the Fr. John Cleary Perpetual Trophy on Sunday 20th May 2012 and proved a most enjoyable event with 87-teams doing battle for the top prizes. The tournament was held in the C.B.S. Crosshaven Pitch & Putt Club. This week saw a noticeable increase in the numbers taking part in Club Competitions which led to some great games. the best score of the week came from the team of Joe Lee, John O’Mahony who made a welcome returned from injury and Mary Murphy with a score of 55 1/2 nett. Noreen Desmond, Michael Murphy, Mary Galvin with 68 captured the gross.

On Thursday, Frank Kavanagh, Pat O’Mahony and Marie Mc Carthy lost out on the back nine to Garry Ryan, Mary Murphy, and Breeda O’Connor with 56 1/2 nett. Fixtues: Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday 7pm. New Members welcome Coaching Provided.
