8,500 stone lost in four years Sessions last 30 minutes and include a mix of weight training, cardio and core training every week, with each package customised to meet the clients’ own goals. Pat highlights that as part of the K2NY personal training programme, over 100 fitness classes are run every week. These include spinning, kettlebells and pilates. An in-house chef is also available at certain times to provide cooking demonstrations to encourage healthy eating. “We have a client who has lost nine stone through K2NY and only two weeks ago, we recorded a loss of 8,000 stone across all our clients over the past four years,” he says. However, Pat adds that K2NY doesn’t just focus on those looking to lose weight but also people who want to improve in sports, need rehab for bad backs or those who simply want an exercise programme. “Our concept is inclusive. Our intent to just keep going and continue to improve," he said. These plans include further ITEC Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training courses, which first commenced last September and saw 33 students graduate this year. Pat adds that a ‘Fit for Kids 'n Teens’ programme is also due to get underway in September, a concept he says, that will go nationwide in the coming years. “With sport related child injuries up by 50% in the last two years, the programme will work with young people in achieving their sporting goals,” he says. A further initiative to be imagined next year is a fitness weekend retreat, using the one-acre assault course in Glanmire. Pat adds that with the intention to continue expanding, both K2NY and their clients are set to achieve their own goals together in the future. “It is a job that gives me a huge amount of satisfaction and I don’t plan to stop anytime soon,” he says.

Spike Island – Jewel in the Crown of Cork Harbour. Dear Editor, I grew up in the picturesque town of Cobh and it has saddened me throughout the years that Cobh’s full potential as a unique harbour town has not been realized. Cobh town has huge potential and the town could serve as a gateway to what could be one of the country’s most exciting projects – ‘Spike Island Theme Park’. Such a Theme Park would rival any other park in Europe due to its unique geographical location. It would create thousands of jobs during the initial construction phase and create hundreds of other jobs in the ancillary industries associated with it. I have executed an Artist’s conceptual design, this design proposal, unlike the proposed ‘Tipperary Venue’ Casino, the ‘Spike’ Theme Park project is a workable, realistic concept which would generate millions of euros on an annual basis and provide thousands of jobs in ancillary based industries. Such a Theme Park would serve as a year round tourist hotspot as many of its features would be indoor based,
which would be a plus considering our unpredictable climate. Features would include: 360 degrees panoramic south facing indoor pool and a partially enclosed outdoor heated pool, indoor/outdoor roller coaster, Jurassic, concrete creature zones, retail centres, restaurants, cinema and a unique domed theatre with an optional ‘open air’ facility design. A modern fleet of Ferry boats would operate to and from Spike from a revamped Kennedy Pier ‘Gateway’ in Cobh. Local businesses in Cobh would flourish, such as hotels, shops and restaurants, and as having established itself as a credible part of call Cruise Liner hub, it would encourage Cruise passengers to spend more time in Cobh. Cobh Town and Cork Harbour has yet to realize the benefits of such a unique and exciting Theme Park proposal. Sincerely, Thomas Cahill, Frankfield.

Mortgages and the Personal Insolvency Bill Protecting distressed mortgage-holders and working to make sure that families can remain in their homes is a priority for Government and Labour has delivered on this priority with the Personal Insolvency Bill. The Personal Insolvency Bill is a significant piece of legislation which will radically reform Ireland’s bankruptcy laws giving many householders, including those in serious mortgage arrears, some level of hope. The Bill proposes non-judicial debt settlement procedures, a Debt Settlement Process and Personal Insolvency Arrangement, allowing home owners to enter into an arrangement with banks in order to write down mortgage debt on a case by case basis. The legislation will also allow for the establishment of Personal Insolvency Trustees which would act independently of the banks in assisting home owners to work out a series of options in dealing with their mortgage debt. Over the coming weeks the legislation will be debated at Committee stages and will then be teased out in even greater detail in the Dáil giving an opportunity to take on board concerns and feedback from the various interested parties.

Family Ties with Geraldine Blake
To travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive’ The phrase ‘To travel’ hopefully is a better thing than to ‘arrive’ does not apply to modern airline travel. I was travelling home for Christmas on my own with three children under the age of six. The plane at Singapore couldn’t start for over three hours because the electrics weren’t working. They offered to let everyone off but since it was a midnight flight and my children were settled I opted to stay on board. Some sixteen hours later, we got going and we arrived in Heathrow airport two hours late. I was relaxed. The London-Cork leg is a mere bus ride compared to the endurance before. However, we seemed to be hovering over Cork for a long time. The male steward explained, “The pilot couldn’t find his earphones to talk to Cork. Then the announcement, “Due to adverse weather conditions we are being diverted to Shannon. I wanted to cry. We landed in Shannon and as we went to collect our luggage, we heard over the tannoy that the coach to Cork would be leaving from Gate B. With the toddler perched on top of my trolley and my six year old pushing the other, we set off for Gate B. At B, a coach pulled up but as all the passengers started to shuttle forward, the driver told us that he was going to Knock and the coach to Cork went from Gate A. We turned around and walked the 500 yard walk to Gate A. However, when we got to Gate A, an Aer Rianta lady waved us away and said, “Would ye go back, you should be at Gate B.” Without a murmur, we went back to Gate B but the driver flatly denied that he was going to Cork. We set off for A again. We had been on the road 28 hours by this stage and I was starting to unravel. I stopped to ask an Aer Lingus lady en route to A and asked, “Which is it, A or B?” to which she replied, “Oh, definitely A, keep going.” Yet when we got to A, the Aer Rianta lady shouted at us to go back. We stopped moving like stunned sheep. The Aer Lingus lady then came up the rear and
shouted back at her, “No, no it’s A. I looked at them both and said, “Do ye not see us? Are we invisible?” Just then, a male passenger stepped forward and said to me, “Don’t take it out on her love, it’s not her fault.” I looked at him in disbelief and spluttered, “It’s her job. There are two gates to choose from and she can’t get the right gate.” Such was my tiredness and exasperation at this point that the second part of that sentence ended in a screech that reached the rafters of the building. Every body within a hundred yard distance stopped dead in their tracks and the man backed off hastily. My three boys merely shrugged their shoulders as if to say, “She’s off again.” The Aer Lingus woman scuttled up to me and said, “Are you travelling by yourself with three small children?” I looked at her with the deepest contempt and said, “You are noticing that now? I only passed you four times.” She brushed aside my rudeness and declared, “You need help.” Deeply offended, I told her that I didn’t need any help but if she could just tell me the gate. She dragged me to one side and whispered, “I’ll get you a taxi.” I whimpered, “I don’t want a taxi, just tell me the gate.” In my tiredness, I was slow to realise that she was bribing me to shut up. In the taxi, I sat in the front passenger seat and talked incessantly to the driver. I did this not because I was so starved of company but the man was so exhausted – he told me that he had been up since 4 am driving people from Shannon - that we nearly went into the ditch twice.

Somewhere outside Limerick my six year old started to cry and said that he was feeling car sick. We swapped seats and for the rest of the journey to Cork, I sat in the middle of the back seat with the other two boys asleep on my lap while I craned my neck forward and kept up the gabbing to ensure we made it home in one piece. Hope is lovely but arriving is better.

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn
There is always something beautiful and romantic about Valentine’s Day Poems! Like the Beautiful Romantic Poems that young lovers write to each other or poems that strike a chord in one’s memory, or reach out and touch your beloved’s heart. Poems that awaken memories of holding hands and looking deep into his/her eyes. Of course we may buy a box of chocolates, a few roses, with a card that creates a Valentine’s Day feeling or perhaps add in a dinner for two. But a poem written from the heart, like this week’s poem from Neil O’Donoghue can say more then everything.
When (For Mary: My forever Valentine)
When waters cease to touch the shore New born babies fail to cry When summer suns no longer set, My love for you will die When moonlights glow on lovers, fade, And stars refuse to shine, When mother’s arms don’t heal each woe, Your love will not be mine When eyes don’t meet in crowded rooms And Santa does not show, When roses loose their fragrance From you I’ll have to go. When absence won’t cause hearts to ache Words of love we no longer send When lips don’t meet to seal our dreams Then our love affair will end Neil O’Donoghue Send your poem to ‘The Poetry Corner’ / Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas or you can email it direct to ronniemcginn@ eircom.net. If possible keep your poem to 20 lines. You may choose any subject you like, in any form you like as long as it’s original. We look forward to hearing from you. RonnieMcGinn

€1 million for Clarkes Hill Moneygourney Road Cork South Central TD Jerry Buttimer has said that the €1million being provided for Clarkes Hill Moneygourney Road will deliver direct benefits to local residents. “As part of the 2012 road allocation grants Minister for Transport, Leo Varadkar, TD, has provided €1 million for the Clarkes Hill Moneygourney Road. This road is in very poor condition and dangerous in places, this funding will benefit local residents and those who use the road. “While there has been a lot of development in the area the local roads have not received the necessary funding to match the increased traffic volumes. The allocation in the 2012 grants will go some way towards rectifying this and alleviating the concerns of residents. “The planned works include widening roads and footpaths, installing bus stops and pedestrian crossings. The areas where the improvements will take place will be Moneygourney Road, down the hill past Garryduff Sports Centre and on Clarkes Hill just beyond the entrance to Mount Oval. “In total Cork City Council is being granted €4,293,795 and Cork County Council will receive €45,330,750 for maintenance, improvements and strategic developments. These grants will enable both councils to undertake significant projects on local roads. The funding is available for work in 2012, it is important that the council makes every effort every effort to use these grants this year as they will be of direct benefit to local residents. “Nationally the amount made available for rehabilitation and maintenance of pavements has been increased by €15 million compared to the initial 2011 allocation. As well as this funding the Minister previously secured €60 million for labour intensive improvements as part of the Jobs Initiative.”

Through one of our members we have been able to source 1000 Oak and Ash saplings which we would like to plant during tree week. We are looking for community projects that would be in a position to plant a substantial number of trees. Please get in touch if you have such a project in mind. We encourage all groups and communities to get involved in this National Tree Council initiative by planting trees, organising walks in local woods and visiting champion trees. Please get in touch if you are interested in getting involved or helping out. CEF will be participating in the Lifelong Learning Festival, 26th March – 1st April.

From Christ King To The Sorbonne: Former Head Girl Julette Is A Euro Star Former Christ King Head Girl Julette Jones, paid a visit recently to her alma mater to talk to current Leaving Cert Students about her experiences in University at the University of Limerick, her various work experiences – including meeting German Chancellor, Angela Merkel and French President, Nicolas Sarkozy and her time studying at the Sorbonne in Paris. Julette, who was Head Girl at Christ King in 2008-2009, went University of Limerick to study Applied Languages with French, German and Spanish after the Leaving Cert. During her time at UL, spent summers working in Germany and Italy as an English teacher, and in her second-year, took a six-month internship with a translation and interpreting firm in Berlin. As Julette explains, the firm, Zänker & Kollegen handles translations for many important clients, and the interpreters work at some of the most high profile conferences and interpreting appointments in Europe. “During my time with the company, I was given responsibility for many translation projects, I was assistant interpreter at several court cases and hearings, I attended several meetings of the EU Commission and I even met Neil Diamond, The Script, Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy, as well as many German celebrities! Not only did my German really improve during my time in Berlin, I learned a lot about the industry in which I hope to work and I made life-long friends. Following my time in Berlin, I was lucky, after a lot of hard work, to win a place to study at the Sorbonne
University for a year and I am currently in Paris, studying languages and translation in the City of Lights! I am living a stone’s throw from the Bastille and apart from going to classes and practising ‘being French’, I have the opportunity to see all the city has to offer – Notre Dame, Sacre Cœur, Montmartre, The Louvre, the Catacombs, going for coffee at the ‘Amelie’ café, strolling up and down the Champs-Elysées to the Arc de Triomphe (unfortunately without the Chanel bags everybody else seems to be toting!). The opportunity to live and study in Paris is an outstanding one and I am so glad to be here at the Sorbonne. I have already made so many friends, both from Paris and around the world, and if nothing else, I will definitely have a couch to sleep on, no matter what country in Europe I find myself in! As well as taking classes at the Sorbonne, I am working on my undergraduate thesis which is a sociolinguistic study of the distinctive language used by young people in Parisian suburbs and whether this language represents a marginalised youth in a fractured French society. I have also been lucky enough to have been offered funding to follow a Masters programme in Germany, when I finish my undergraduate degree.” Julette gives full credit to Christ King for helping her discover her love for languages: “I enjoyed six fantastic years at CKSS, where I discovered my love for languages, particularly French Vogue with Ms Mc Ardle, and German debates and school exchanges with Mrs Kearney, and, if
Cork restaurants have already started signing up to Gorta’s National Soup Week, which will run from March 5-11 next. The Restaurants Association of Ireland (RAI) is also encouraging
people across the city and county to support the campaign at participating restaurants. During the week, people can also run ‘Soup for Life’ events at home; in the workplace or in clubs, schools and colleges. The annual fundraising campaign encourages people to get out and sip some soup to help make hunger history. ‘Soup for Life’ is a fun, vibrant and positive campaign which is very much focused on participation across the country. This year, Gorta is encouraging people to get out and support their favourite eateries by participating in ‘Soup for Life’. For each bowl of soup sold by participating restaurants, cafes and venues from March 5-11, €1 will be donated to Gorta helping families in Uganda secure a bright future for themselves and their children.

Cllr Kieran McCarthy
McCarthy’s ‘Design a Public Park, Art Competition’ Cllr. Kieran McCarthy invites all young budding engineers and architects to participate in McCarthy’s ‘Design a Public Park, Art Competition’. Interested students are invited to draw a plan for the proposed c.160 acre public park on the old landfill site or ‘Cork City Dump’ on the Kinsale Road. The majority of the former landfill has been ‘capped or layered with topsoil’ to allow a new park to be constructed as a recreation amenity. “Design a Public Park” offer students an opportunity to present ideas of how public spaces may look from a user point of view and will be viewed by the engineer responsible for drafting the new design. The competition is run in association with Lifetime Lab ‘Meet the Engineer’s Free Family Fun Day’ at the Lifetime Lab, Saturday 3 March 2012 to celebrate Engineer’s Week 2012. Entry to the design competition is free of charge with prizes awarded for best design, best drawing and best concept. There are several age groups, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12 and Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate for secondary school students. All entries should be forwarded to Lifetime Lab before Thursday 1 March 2012. Drawings can be made on A4 or A3 sheets. They can be mounted if the student wishes. It is the intention to display all drawings on ‘Meet the Engineer’s Day’ and have the winners marked. Prizes will be awarded to drawings that are of a high standard and in particular, which demonstrate colour, creativity and imagination. On the back of the drawing, the name, age, teacher and school of the student should be clearly marked. Winners will be announced on ‘Meet the Engineer’s Day’ at the Lifetime Lab, Cork on Saturday 3 March 2012. A map of the proposed park site and further information can be viewed at Kieran McCarthy’s community programme section of his blog at www.kieranmccarthy.ie

Parkinson’s disease Parkinson’s disease develops gradually, often starting with a barely noticeable tremor in just one hand. But while tremor may be the most well-known sign of Parkinson’s disease, the disorder also commonly causes a slowing or freezing of movement. Friends and family may notice that your face shows little or no expression and your arms don’t swing when you walk. Speech often becomes soft and mumbling. Parkinson’s symptoms tend to worsen as the disease progresses.
Symptoms The symptoms of Parkinson’s disease vary from person to person. Early signs may be subtle and can go unnoticed for months or years. Symptoms typically begin on one side of the body and usually remain worse on that side. Parkinson’s signs and symptoms may include: Tremor, Slowed motion (bradykinesia), Rigid muscles, Impaired posture and balance, Loss of automatic movements, Speech changes and Dementia.
How do I handle mum’s Alzheimer’s?
Causes Many symptoms of Parkinson’s disease result from the lack of a chemical messenger, called dopamine, in the brain. This occurs when the specific brain cells that produce dopamine die or become impaired. But researchers still aren’t certain about what sets this chain of events in motion. Some theorize that genetic mutations or environmental toxins may play a role in Parkinson’s disease.
Lifestyle and home remedies Certain lifestyle changes also may help make living with Parkinson’s disease easier.
Healthy eating
Eat a nutritionally balanced diet that contains plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. These foods are high in fiber, which is important for helping prevent the constipation that is common in Parkinson’s disease. If you take a fiber supplement, such as psyllium powder, be sure to introduce it gradually and drink plenty of fluids daily. Otherwise, your constipation may become worse.
Walking with care
Parkinson’s disease can disturb your sense of balance, making it difficult

to walk with a normal gait. These suggestions may help:Try not to move too quickly, Aim for your heel to strike the floor first when you’re walking, If you notice yourself shuffling, stop and check your posture. It’s best to stand up straight with your head over your hips and your feet eight to 10 inches apart.
Avoiding falls
In the later stages of the disease, you may fall more easily. That’s because Parkinson’s disease affects the balance and coordination centers in the brain. In fact, you may be thrown off balance by just a small push or bump. The following suggestions may help: Don’t pivot your body over your feet while turning. Instead, make a U-turn, Don’t lean or reach. Keep your center of gravity over your feet, Don’t carry things while walking, Avoid walking backward.
Dressing
Dressing can be the most frustrating of all activities for someone with Parkinson’s disease. The loss of finemotor control makes it hard to button and zip clothes, and even to step into a pair of pants. An occupational therapist can point out techniques that make daily activities easier. These suggestions also may help: Allow plenty of time so that you don’t feel

rushed, Lay clothes nearby, Choose clothes that you can slip on easily, such as sweat pants, simple dresses or pants with elastic waistbands,Use fabric fasteners, such as Velcro, instead of buttons.
Alternative medicine
Coenzyme Q10: People with Parkinson’s disease tend to have low levels of coenzyme Q10, and some research has suggested it may be beneficial. Massage: Massage therapy can reduce muscle tension and promote relaxation, which can be especially helpful to people experiencing muscle rigidity associated with Parkinson’s disease. Tai chi: An ancient form of Chinese exercise, tai chi employs slow, flowing motions that help improve flexibility and balance. Yoga: Yoga is another type of exercise that increases flexibility and balance. Most poses can be modified, depending on your physical abilities. If you are concerned that you might be showing early signs of parkinson’s disease, contact your G.P. for a consultation.

Cracking Great Pancakes as 15 Million Eggs are purchased across Ireland for Pancake Tuesday Celebrations Pancake Tuesday is on 21st February and it is also a day when egg sales traditionally peak in Ireland. It is estimated that about 15 million Bord Bia Quality Assured eggs will be used to make pancakes in households across Ireland this year as consumers enjoy cooking and flipping this versatile dish. To celebrate the day, Pancake recipes to suit every taste and budget are featured on www.eggs.ie. There is also a series of easy to follow video recipes by Catherine Fulvio for sweet and savoury pancakes. While the traditional Irish pancake with lemon and sugar brings nostalgic memories of childhood, many households are now opting for savoury pancakes as a main meal on Pancake Tuesday or for more exotic sweet pancakes with toppings made from berries or luxurious compotes or sauces. One of the benefits of making pancakes is that you can easily make up a selection of different fillings and toppings to turn Pancake Tuesday into a culinary delight for everyone to enjoy. “We would like to advise consumers to stock up on Bord Bia Quality Assured Eggs to ensure they are buying the best quality eggs for their pancakes”, said Teresa Brophy, Ireland Manager at Bord Bia. “We hope people will enjoy the recipes for pancakes on eggs.ie and also try out some of the other recipes on the site including dinner dishes such as quiche, frittata and omelettes”.

Snow in Northern Michigan I just got off the phone with a friend who lives in northern Michigan. He said that the snow is nearly waist high and is still falling. The temperature is at fifteen degrees and still dropping... and the wind is increasing to near gale force. Even the snow plows are having a hard time getting around. The schools are closed, and alerts are on all the TV and radio stations urging people to stay off the streets. He said his wife has done nothing but look through the kitchen window for hours on end, just staring. He says he’s concerned that if it gets much worse, he may have to let her in.

Things to do This Week With the kind of weather we’ve been having most ground is not in a very good condition at the moment. Hopefully things are improving. As usual we’ll try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing. Now not everything in this article may apply to you or to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.
Flower Garden
Greenhouse
Hard prune buddlejas, caryopteris and other summer-flowering shrubs to stimulate new growth. For a good late display, leave some Buddleia davidii stems unpruned until June. Divide or transplant snowdrops while still in leaf (“in the green”) Watch out for slugs attacking hostas, delphiniums and other favourite plants, and protect with slug pellets. Trim off old leaves of epimediums to reveal the early spring flowers.
Pot on rooted cuttings and young plants as soon as they need more space. Start sowing annual climbers such as Cobaea scandens and tropaeolums.
Kitchen Garden Prepare a seedbed when the soil is not too wet, and cover with cloches or polythene to warm up ready for early sowings. Replace fruit cage roof nets now that snow is less likely. Plant perpetual strawberries for crops later this year. Sow; onion, parsley, parsnip, early peas, and turnip seeds in sheltered places.
Fork over old growing bags, add fertiliser, and use for early batches of lettuce. Prick out begonia seedlings as soon as they can be handled, pressing them into the surface of moist compost. Sow calendula, larkspur, cornflowers and scabious in 13-15cm (5-6in) pots for flowers under glass or on the patio. Keep a full can of water inside to warm before use. Start moving hardier seedlings to the cold frame, to make space for later sowings of tender plants. Pollinate indoor fruit such as peaches, nectarines and apricots.

The 45 members of the Carrigaline Active Retired Association who attended last Thursday’s gathering in the Parish Centre, were treated to an interesting and very entertaining talk by William O’Halloran from Ballygarvan. William who heads up a mobile education company called ‘Will and Away’ was a surprise speaker who enthralled his listeners with a talk on Bush Craft, primitive living and survival skills. While the talk may be geared towards a younger
audience the CARA members were most interested and want to meet William again at an outdoor event next summer. This Thursday 9th February CARA meet from 2.30 to 4.30 pm in the Parish Centre for dancing with Fionán Cogan and a talk by Pat Stack on Home Safety. An outing to Garryvoe and Shanagarry is planned for Thursday 16th February and on Thursday 23rd February after ‘Go for Life’ exercises Jack Kent of Trucolour will give a talk on Interior Decorating. Some CARA members are heading to Spain on Saturday 10th March for a break in the Sun. For further information contact Noreen 087 130 1122.

I believe these Alarms are a real necessity for our older people who need lots of care, it allows them to alert people around them that they need help, it is an essential service and it permits people to come at the correct time and maybe save their lives. A personal alarm or security lighting can help our older people feel safe while helping to deter possible burglars from targeting them. Young at heart is the registered contact for the alarms in association with community Garda Dan Cowman. Dan will call to you and go over all the details of the scheme, for more details you can contact me on 4363867 . If anyone would like to represent Douglas in the over 60s singing competition on March 20th in St Columbas Hall, contact me ,this year the Douglas Heat of the competition will be very special ,the Young at Heart have decided that it would be appropriate to dedicate a perpetual trophy in honour of the late Luke Philpott.
The Luke Philpott perpetual trophy would be awarded to the winner of the Douglas over 60s competition, it is widely known that Luke had a beautiful voice and a passion for singing and we feel this would be a fitting tribute to our dear friend Luke. Join us on Valentines Night and enjoy a special dinner menu of Bacon and Cabbage followed by hot apple pie and custard, Red Roses for the ladies and music by the one and only Pete Duffy. The annual Walzing competition takes in April, and once again Rhona Coulter and Ernest Perryman will do the honours and judge the competition, get your dancing shoes polished and your Easter Bonnets out as that competition is in April, Kathleen Swanick, Deilia Geary, and Minnie really turn up dressed to win and I’m sure this year they will once again surprise us , The Tuesday Knit and Natter group have a new venue in the new Parish Hall behind St Columbas church same time 2-4. Where Did She Go? An elderly woman in her nineties had a visitor from her church come to see her at the nursing home. “How are you?” the visitor asked. “Oh,” said the elderly woman, “I’m just worried sick!” “You look like you’re in good health. They take good care of you here, don’t they?” “Oh, yes, they take good care of me here.” “Do you have any pain?” the visitor asked. “No, I can’t say I do,” the elderly woman replied. “Then what has you worried sick?” the visitor asked. The elderly woman leaned in and explained, “All of my closest friends have already died and gone to heaven. I’m sure they are all wondering where I went!”

In The Loop with Peter Bowles D.J.
Madonna has released dates for her forthcoming world tour and there’s a Dublin date on the list. The Queen of Pop, fresh from her performance at last night’s Superbowl, will play and as-yet-unnamed venue in Dublin on Tuesday 24th July. Though the venue has yet to be announced, you could probably assume it will take place in either The O2, Croke Park, the RDS or Phoenix Park. These dates have yet to be confirmed officially by Madonna’s management but, as of now, we understand them to be true. City Limits plays host to Karl Spain this weekend. Doors 9pm this Saturday and admission is 15euros. Karl is probably best known in Ireland for his TV series Karl Spain Wants A Woman which was a huge success in that he not only got huge ratings but he also found himself a woman! In 2009 he filmed Karl Spain Wants to Rock but did not get a woman from that show. Apart from his own series he has also performed stand up in U.S, the Middle East, Australia and even as far away as England. Lana Del Rey may have scored more than a dozen No.1s around the globe, but the Born To Die singer recently explained that fans might not hear from her again, because she has nothing left to say. The 25-year-old who appears on the front cover of this month’s edition of Vogue magazine said: “I don’t think I’ll write another record. What would I say? “I feel like everything I wanted to say, I’ve said already.” The New York musician further explained that just like hit record maker Adele, the majority of her lyrics stem from previous heartbreak. She said: “Even though I can’t be with that person any more. I still want to honour those memories. I felt like falling in love changed me, neurologically, and the record is about being faithful in my mind to the memory of a particular person.” However, the star whose real name is Lizzie Grant insisted she would not name and shame her ex-boyfriend saying, “Umm, I’m in contact with

his mother. He’s somewhere else but he’s, um around.” Susan Boyle’s brother Gerry Boyle is planning to release his debut album. The 57-year-old is hoping to achieve his own chart success with new single All Of My Days. However, Gerry insisted that he is not trying to cash in on Susan’s fame and decided to release the track after letting a New Zealand radio station play it for a bit of fun. Speaking to the press he said: “It’s for the public to decide who is the better singer out of me and Susan but it’s definitely not a competition. “You can’t just jump on stage and start singing just because your sister has become famous. Susan is 100% behind me. “She’s been shoving me to do this for years and I kept telling her, ‘All in good time’. I haven’t sung with Susan for a very long time but now America is calling out for that, you never know.” Gerry added: “New Zealand and American women who follow Susan think it’s amazing and think Susan and I should do a song together.” The aspiring performer has already been branded SuBro by fans and the media. Gerry has previously been outspoken about Susan’s management, saying they have kept her family unaware of her career plans and schedule. Eminem is the subject of a $9 million lawsuit from a homeless man over a car advertisement that the rapper filmed for Chrysler. Stephen Lee Pieck, who listed his address as homeless, begun lawsuit proceedings earlier this year in New York and said that he was having dinner with Christina Aguilera in New York on September 9th 2010 when she called Eminem. Pieck then claims that he told Eminem the concept for the Chrysler ‘Born of Fire’ commercial. American press claim that Pieck wrote in his lawsuit that he received “no compensation in monetary terms for the work I did.” God loves a trier!!

The Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB) is urging food lovers to head to Northern Ireland and stock-up on the fine foods available, visit the many local producers and see famous brands being made firsthand. A number of cookery schools have also opened up in recent years, giving visitors the opportunity to return home with new found culinary skills. “Northern Ireland has an abundance of high quality, home-grown produce and our seafood, beef, lamb, dairy produce, fruit and vegetables can be ranked among the best in the world,” said NITB’s market manager (ROI) Fiona Cunningham. “There are many areas in Northern Ireland that have become synonymous with a particular product such as Glenarm Salmon, Armagh Apples, Finnebrogue Venison, Comber Potatoes and Europe’s greatest source of eels, Lough Neagh Eels, which are in high demand internationally,” she said. “With such excellent produce, it is
little wonder that a number of cookery schools have popped up in recent years such as My Little Cookery School in Greysteel and the recently opened Cookery School at James Street South in Belfast,” she continued. “These schools offer a fun way of learning new skills and with many of the cookery schools offering gift vouchers this could be the perfect treat for a loved one this Valentine’s Day,” added Fiona.
Learn To Cook The most recent addition to cookery schools in Belfast is Cookery School at James Street South. Watch and learn from professional chefs and people involved in the food industry with cookery sessions that range between two hour demonstrations to five hour practical classes. Chefs involved in the school include James Street South owner Niall McKenna and celebrated chef Paula McIntyre. Belle Isle School of Cookery, situated just eight miles from Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh, provides diploma courses in addition to one day and weekend courses for all levels of cooking ability. There are also evening demonstration classes which are accompanied by a glass of wine and plenty of tasting. The Zoo Parking Attendant (From The London Times) Outside the Bristol Zoo, in England, there is a parking lot for 150 cars and 8 coaches, or buses. It was manned by a very pleasant attendant with a ticket machine charging cars 1 pound and coaches 5 pounds. This parking attendant worked there solid for all of 25 years. Then, one day, he just didn’t turn up for work. “Oh well”, said Bristol Zoo Management, “we’d better phone up the City Council and get them to send a new parking attendant...” “Er... no”, said the Council, “that parking lot is your responsibility.” “Er... no”, said Bristol Zoo management, “the attendant was employed by the City Council, wasn’t he?” “Er... NO!” insisted the Council. Sitting in his villa somewhere on the coast of Spain, is a bloke who had been taking the parking lot fees, estimated at 400 pounds per day at Bristol Zoo for the last 25 years. Assuming 7 days a week, this amounts to just over 3.6 million pounds. And no one even knows his name.

G.A.A. FOCUS By Pat Harrington Douglas Community Snippets from the local School Athletics and National Scene Cork Hurlers
I heard some of the interview on Cork hurling and the season ahead, given by Jimmy Barry Murphy. Jimmy said, and rightly so that there is a lot of hype regarding the new management team. There is an opinion abroad that this group will guarantee success. Well I can recall in 1995 the management team appointed consisted of J.B.M., Tom Cashman and Tony O’Sullivan – known collectively as The Dream Team. Cork were hammered by Limerick in the first round. Presently Kilkenny and Tipperary appear to be ahead of the pack. The burning question is, can Cork bridge the gap? It’s questionable if all the players were pulling with Denis Walsh last season. This year we expect the older players will have the enthusiasm and the drive to inspire their younger colleagues. As yet this team is a work in progress and Cork supporters will have to be patient. Hopefully we will see an improvement, and should Cork reach the all-Ireland semi-final we would recognise that as progress. Rough Treatment
The scenes in Portlaoise during the all-Ireland junior semi-final between Dromid Pearses of Kerry and Derrytresk of Tyrone have been described as disgraceful. Speaking on Newstalk Ivan Yates said that these were not isolated incidents and should be addressed in a proper manner. Yates is a supporter of Manchester City F.C. and a listener texted in to query what Ivan thought of the Ballotelli stamping incident. He simply replied that the alleged perpetrator was not yet convicted. Yates was basically jumping on the bandwagon. Lest you get me wrong I believe there needs to be a serious investigation into the matter and possibly serious decisions need to be taken. Approximately ten people from Kerry, Offaly and Limerick rang the R.T.E. Liveline programme, all expressing scathing remarks regarding the scenes that took place. The main issues were the fact that both subs and spectators from the Tyrone outfit jumped over the fence and got involved in the fracas. A Tyrone man rang the same programme on the following day in
protest and claimed that the Kerry side were the aggressors. He seemed to hold the belief that the northern teams were always the victims and were regularly misunderstood. It was pointed out to him that similar scenes took place at a club game in Tyrone, and secondly a ladies’ football match where a man had his jaw broken. I bought The Kerryman newspaper because they did a three-page report on the happenings at the game. The last time I bought this paper it was still published in broadsheet form. (A long time ago). The well-known radio commentator, newspaper columnist and former referee, Weeshie Fogarty made some thought-provoking comments; he described the atmosphere at the game as poisonous. He maintained that Declan O’Sullivan was singled out for rough treatment. (The Tyrone people reckoned that O’Sullivan was no saint). Murphy maintained that there was a lot going on off the ball and that the lack of stewarding was a serious issue. The Dromid manager claimed that before the game commenced three of his players were grabbed by the privates. The Derrytresk outfit will claim that if the Kerry players were so well behaved how can it be that nine of them were booked and two red-carded. Lixnaw
From the age of 5 to 17 years I used to holiday in Lixnaw (about 12 miles from Tralee). Tiny Cotter and Linda would be very familiar with that countryside. Those were most enjoyable times. I read in The Kerryman that this north Kerry club had recently held their underage A.G.M. This featured teams of under 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16, all evennumbered age groups. They would not have the population to form teams of odd-numbered ages. Membership is 10 euro. With those interesting facts and statics I’ll close for now. Please Note: The opinions expressed in my column are exclusively my own and are not the views or opinions of my club.
Tramore Athletic The Tramore Athletic U12s continued their magnificent recent goal scoring and winning form when they defeated Kanturk by 7 goals to 1 at Tramore Park on Saturday.

It has been a hugely successful couple of weeks for the Douglas Community School athletes on the competition front. At the IAAF Antrim International Cross-Country event the u17 team of Billy Murphy, John Durcan and Jamie O’Connell won the team event with a super display of running. Billy led the team home with a great 10th place finish over the 5,600m course. At the South Munster Schools CrossCountry Championships the school retained the best overall school cup for a record 8th consecutive year, a superb achievement. The minor team were 2nd led by Ben Smith, Dylan Kelly, Sean Barber and Michael Scully. The junior team came 2nd also led by Alan Morgan, David Smith, Evan Byrne and Jake O Connor. The Intermediate team came 1st led by a super run from Liam Harris
in 2nd place and he was followed closely by great runs from Alan Ring, Jamie O’Connell and Brendan Couch. Finally the best was saved for last with our senior team winning the senior team title for the 7th consecutive year and in the process equalling the great North Mons number of consecutive senior titles. They were led home by Cullen Lynch in a superb 2nd place with other great runs from Emmet Bracken 3rd, Billy Murphy 4th and John Durcan 10th. The performances on the day were all dedicated to Douglas CS student and close friend of the team, Erbie Underwood, who passed away two weeks ago. There was a minutes silence before the start of the senior race and the team wore black arm bands in his honour. ‘This season is for you Erbie’.

Douglas Hall FC by Finbarr Buckley
Umbro U-12 Division Four Douglas Hall A 2; Park Utd. 1
Despite going behind early on, Liam McKnight netted twice to seal the points for the Hall. Max Kelleher, Mark Smith & Karl Waterman were outstanding in defence for the home team. Umbro U-13 Division One Douglas Hall 2; Ringmahon Rgns. 0
Following a scoreless opening half, Jonathan O’Regan & Cathal Kennedy scored for the Hall in an exciting second-half at Moneygourney. Stevie Sharpe & Sean Grace excelled for the winners who are still in contention for championship honours. Umbro U-16 Division Three Douglas Hall A 1; Carrigaline Utd. A 0
In a closely fought derby, in which Mark Power was outstanding at the heart of the Hall’s defence, Mark Crowley kept a cool head to put away a penalty for the only goal of the game. Ted Crowley Cup U-17 Cup First Round Castlebridge Celtic 4; Douglas Hall 0
The Hall made the long journey to Bridesbridge on the banks of the
picturesque River Bride last Sunday afternoon to take on high-flying Castlebridge Celtic. Despite going two down inside the opening half hour, the visitors went close to getting back into the contest with long range shots from David O’Connor & Mikey Hennessy. The host added two further second-half goals on the heavy surface to progress despite being put under pressure right up the final whistle by a gallant Hall outfit. Beamish Stout Junior Premier Division Douglas Hall 5; Blarney Utd. 0
Deccie O’Connell (2) & Sean Moynihan were among the goals under lights at Moneygourney last Friday in a convincing win for the home side.

Grangevale AUL 1A Grangevale 3 – Greenmount 1 Having beaten the same opposition 4-0 away from home back in October, The Vale had to battle to get the 3 points on offer in Grangevale Park on Sunday morning, coming back from a 0-1 half time deficit to win with a second half brace from top scorer Adam Cann, David O’Connor netting the other.
Paul O’Halloran was between the sticks and Ken O’Connor, Keith O’Callaghan, Mark Hackett and Colin McSweeney formed the defensive quartet. Dan Cronin, John Harris, Damo O’Callaghan © and John O’Connell made up the midfield and Adam Cann was partnered up front by
David O’Connor. The first half was started tentatively by both sides and the home team were dealt a blow in the 25th minute when Keith O’Callaghan was forced off with a back injury. Diarmuid Moynihan was introduced for his debut appearance and joined the impressive Hackett at the heart of the defence. The Vale had a big shout for a penalty in the 31st minute when the Greenmount full back appeared to stop the ball from crossing the line with his hand but the referee didn’t see the offense and play continued. The visitors got themselves in front five minutes later when a looping header crossed the line despite

College Corinthians AFC A fantastic weekend of non stop action dominated by National Cup games on the schoolboy front which saw our three teams under 13, under 14 and under 16 all turning in great team performances as they progressed to the last 16 of their respective National Cups. Schoolboys Section National Cup Under 13 Corinthian Boys 4 Portlaoise 2 Corinthians boys hosted Portlaoise Town in this highly entertaining and competitive last 32 National Cup game. While Corinthians started the better of the two sides it was Portlaoise Town who took the early lead after a quick break. Undaunted, Corinthians set about their task and drew level a short time later with a well worked equaliser fired home by Eoin Davis. Man of the match, James Holland worked tiredlessly down the left and was at the centre of most of Corinthians attacks ably supported by left full Dylan Ward. Eoin Murphy and Arseni Lamanov controlled the midfield area posing a constant threat from midfiled. Just before half time as Corinthians continued to pile on the pressure and pushing forward with purpose that allowed Eoin Davis in for his second. Corinthians started the second half yet again running at the Portlaoise defence. And after a good passing move David O’Sullivan was in to make it 3-1. Portlaosie were by no means out of it with their No 9 proving to be a handful for Corinthians central defenders James O’Donovan & Stephen Fox who were both equal to the challange. As was Corinthians goalkeeper Christian Begley who made some terrfic saves when called upon. However, it was the Portlaoise No. 9 who undid Corinthains in the 40minute with a tremendous drive from outside the box to give the visitors a chance. Corinthians responded and upped the pace once more. And it was that man Eoin Davis yet again that got in to score his hat trick and Corinthians fourth. Credit to Porlaoise they played to the final whistle throwing everything at
the best efforts of O’Halloran. The second half was only 4 minutes old when Cann’s header got The Vale back on level terms. The momentum was now with the home side and Cronin had a great opportunity to score in the 61st minute but miscued and fired wide. Greenmount were always dangerous on the counter attack and it took a great reflex save from O’Halloran in the 64th minute to keep the scoreline even. The second Grangevale goal came from O’Connor in the 73rd minute when he finished from close range after Cann’s shot was parried by the keeper. Cann wrapped up the 3 points in the 81st minute, a superb cross field pass from
Corinthians but they were unable to find the telling strike and it was Corinthians winning out 4-2. There were also good performances from Alex Chandler, Bryan Hill and Mathew McAuliffe. Under 16 Corinthian Boys 2 WFTA 1 In a very enjoyable contest which featured some outstanding football from both sides, Corinthians deservedly booked their place in the last sixteen of the National Cup as they just got the better of Dublin and District Schoolboys League side WFTA. While Corinthians generally had the better of the game WFTA were always dangerous on the break which meant Corinthians could never relax and the game was in doubt right up to the final whistle. After a scoreless first half in which both sides had their chances Corinthians took the lead early in the second half when Alex Burns picked up a fine Evan Galvin cross and chipped the ball over the WFTA keeper from an acute angle. With Craig Donnellan and Shane Kearney now getting a grip in midfield and Alex O’ Sullivan working extremely hard up front, Corinthians began to dominate and they went close on several occasions to doubling their lead but they had to wait until the final minute before extending their lead when Alex O’ Sullivan scored from close range. To their credit WFTA still didn’t throw in the towel and they pulled one back almost immediately to set up a nervous finish which Corinthians managed to survive. Underage Section
Underage training takes place every weekend in Corinthians and new members are always welcome. Training times are as follows Saturday
Under Six & Seven (2005/2006: 12.30pm – 1.45pm Under Eight (2004):12.30pm – 1.45pm Under Nine (2003): 4.30pm – 5.45pm Sunday
Under Eleven (2001): 10.00am – 11.30am Under Ten (2002: 11.30am – 1.00pm
Damo O’Callagahan was controlled well by the striker and he rounded two defenders before cooly placing the ball beyond the visiting keeper. This was an important victory in difficult conditions and it proved the strength in depth of the current squad, with a number of changes required to the starting line up due to suspensions and unavailability for this fixture which the management team will be very happy with. Next Sunday sees another crucial league fixture with the visit of Glenvale to Grangevale Park, kick off 10.45.

At Big Brother Big Sister you can help impact the life of a young person for the better. Big Brother Big Sister mentoring is about one to one relationships between a volunteer (Big) and a young person (Little) doing things they enjoy for one or two hours a week for a minimum of 12 months.
Bigs and Littles undertake a range of shared interests and activities which may include playing board games, sporting activities, baking a cake, sharing a pizza, kicking the football or making something together. The emphasis is on the gradual development of a friendship rather than the activity itself. Big Brothers and Sisters are in high demand. So, start something. get involved and find out why so many volunteers say, “I get back so much more than I give.” You can do all the fun things you love to do already, like play video games, go fishing, even play football—only now you get to enjoy it with a young person who can truly benefit from sharing this experience with you’’. Ready to be a Big? Go to www. bbbsireland.ie and clicks on become a volunteer and just fill out our simple online inquiry form.
