• Titanic in all her glory - 1912
Titanic 100 Iconic, infamous, historic, mysterious – just some of the terms associated with the Titanic. One hundred years has passed since the world’s most famous liner anchored off Roches Point on the 11th of April 1912, to pick up her final passengers and mail before proceeding on her maiden voyage to the ‘new world’, a destination she didn’t reach as three and a half days later the ship they said was unsinkable, struck an iceberg and sunk within two and a half hours, leaving more than 1500 souls to perish in the icy waters of the North Atlantic. Fabled in story, the great liner’s exact whereabouts remained a mystery until September 1st 1985 when undersea explorer Bob Ballard discovered Titanics wreck 2.5 miles below the surface. Since then, numerous expeditions to the wreck site has led to many, many conclusions on what exactly happened on that fateful night and how exactly the supership met her end.
• The remains of Titanic’s bow on the seabed
Cobh is the centre point of week long commemorations and celebrations this week on the centenary of Titanic’s brief visit to pick up passengers who departed from Queenstown, as it was known, along with mail for the Atlantic crossing to the U.S. Apart from the official ceremonies on the 11th (yesterday) there are a host of events from outdoor concerts on the promenade, many boating excursions and events, exhibitions, lectures and of course the Titanic Trail hosted by my former navy colleague Dr. Michael Martin as well as markets and all the best Cobh has to offer. This is a unique week in Cobh during a year of festivities celebrating the centenary and its connection with the most famous liner of all time – Titanic! Welcome I would like to welcome aboard, a new member to our team, Michael O’Hanlon, who needs no introduction. Michael will be out and about snapping and will also be writing his Seen, Read and Heard column which will no doubt entertain and hopefully stir the mind too. As well as a new team member, The Douglas Post will take on a retro look and will see new positive changes in the coming weeks and months. Welcome aboard Michael.

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn
The Formula One Motor Racing Season is not for everybody yet like life itself it depends on a balance between the intellect and the senses, between man and machine, the mind and the body, thought and action, which funnily enough is almost like writing a poem. The challenge suddenly presented itself – write a motor racing poem – develop sensuous ideas that predominate over the imagery and try to avoid any versified philosophy. Well I tried!

Formula One! From younger than old to the latest beginner, The fans in their thousands all queue up and pay, To view a non-race that can not have a winner, For it’s just the big practice before the big day. Bedwetting 10 Bedwetting Facts Parents Should Know 1. The medical term for bedwetting is “enuresis,” which refers to bedwetting that is not due to an abnormality of any portion of the urinary tract. Primary enuresis means the child has never been dry, whereas secondary enuresis is the term used for a child who has previously been dry but then starts wetting his bed. 2. Fifteen percent of five-year-olds or around three to four children in a first grade class, are not dry every night. Eighty-five percent of children eventually outgrow bedwetting without treatment. Bedwetting boys outnumber girls by a ratio of 4 to 1. 3. Bedwetting is not an emotional or

psychological problem, nor does it reflect a dysfunctional family. It is a problem of sleeping too deeply to be aware of bladder function. 4. The genetics of bedwetting are similar to that of obesity. If both parents were bedwetters, the child has a seventy- percent chance of being a bedwetter. If only one parent was wet at night, the child will have a forty- percent chance of following his parent’s nocturnal habit. 5. It helps to first understand how children usually achieve bladder control. In early infancy, bladderemptying occurs mostly by the bladder- emptying reflex. When the bladder reaches a certain fullness and the muscle has stretched to a certain point, these muscles automatically squeeze to empty the bladder. Sometime between 18 months and 2½ years, most children have an

awareness of bladder fullness, the first step toward bladder control. Next, the child becomes aware that he can consciously inhibit the bladder-emptying reflex and hold in his urine. As a result of his urineholding efforts, his bladder stretches and its capacity increases. When the child can consciously inhibit the bladder-emptying reflex, he achieves daytime bladder control. Nighttime control occurs when the child can unconsciously inhibit the bladderemptying reflex. 6. Think of bedwetting as a communication problem: the bladder and the brain don’t communicate during sleep. The bedwetting child literally sleeps through his bladder signals. There are late walkers, late talkers, and late dry-nighters. 7. Bedwetting is a sleep problem. New insights into the cause of bedwetting validate what observant parents have long noted: “He sleeps so deeply, he doesn’t even know he’s wetting the bed.” These deep sleepers are not

aware of their bladder sensation at night, let alone how to control it. 8. Some bedwetters may have a deficiency of ADH (anti-diuretic hormone), the hormone that is released during sleep and concentrates the urine so that the kidneys produce less of it during sleep and the bladder doesn’t overfill. 9. Normally, bladder fullness works like supply and demand. The bladder fills with just enough urine at night so that it does not overfill and demand to be emptied. Bedwetters may overfill their bladder so the supply outweighs the demand, but because they are sleeping so soundly they just don’t tune into their bladder fullness. 10. A small number of children have small bladders that are more easily overfilled. For more information contact Garvan Lynch at Lynchs Pharmacy on 4366923.

Jerry Buttimer TD
Reduction in Cork City crime statistics Cork South Central Fine Gael TD Jerry Buttimer has called for a collective response to ensure Cork city remains a safe place to live, shop, visit and work. Deputy Buttimer was speaking after a meeting of the Cork City Centre Business Community Safety Forum. “Latest crime statistics for Cork City show a reduction in property crime, theft, criminal damage and public order offences. These are very welcome developments. Figures show that the number of assaults causing harm across the city division has fallen by 20%; however the number of assaults in the city centre has increased. Compared to the same period last year this year’s figures are up by 26%, albeit from a low base. “The city centre is a vibrant place to live, socialise and work, it is a place where people feel safe. Despite this it is disappointing that the number of assaults in the city centre has increased; this is a trend that must be reversed. We all have a collective social responsibility to address the underlying causes. “These figures were provided by the Gardaí at a meeting of the City Centre Business Community Safety Forum. Gardaí suggested that the increase was due to the use of alcohol and other accelerants, it is a sign of increased aggression on our streets late at night. “In Cork the Gardaí have increased their visibility in the city centre at key times. If it wasn’t for this proactive policing approach I fear that the trend would be worse. I commend the Gardaí for the work they are doing across the city, it is in the interest of everyone working and living in the city that this continues. “Locally we must take action to make our streets even safer. There must be continued engagement between the Council, Gardaí, alcohol retailers and security companies. Cooperation and common purpose are essential in addressing the problems. As an immediate step the city bye laws on the confiscation of alcohol being consumed on the streets must be implemented. These initiatives are essential to enhancing our city, making it a better place to live, shop, work and visit.” “As a society we must change our attitudes towards alcohol. Over the years our alcohol consumption has increased, as a result alcohol related illnesses no longer only affect middle-aged and older people. Healthcare workers are now seeing the impact of excessive use among younger adults. To address these issues we must change our national attitude towards alcohol, we must end our tolerance of alcohol misuse. “Earlier this year I launched a report on the misuse of alcohol and other drugs, this highlighted the social problems caused by misuse. As chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children I have begun a process of engagement with Minister of State, Roisín Shortall TD, in developing policy based on the Committee’s report and that of the National Steering Group. Key elements in this policy will be controlling alcohol promotion and pricing.”

It was with great sadness last week we said goodbye to a most gracious and gentle lady ,”Eileen O’Leary . Eileen enjoyed many outings and socials with the young at heart, she had a generous spirit and a great sense of humour. Eileen would have celebrated her 90th birthday in August. We always surprised her with a birthday cake which I’m sure she always appreciated. Eileen will always be in the present with us but I’m sure her family gone before her have wrapped her in their arms in her heavenly home, rest in peace dear Eileen you will remain forever in our hearts. We wish Billy McCarthy the best of luck on Sunday Night in the City Hall representing Douglas in the semi -final of the Over 60s. If anyone would like to go along and support Billy on the night you can contact me on 4363867 for tickets. Iarnród Éireann News Record punctuality on rail network in Q1 of 2012: Cork - Dublin achieves 98.3% punctuality Punctuality levels on Ireland’s rail network have soared to record highs in the first quarter of 2012. The first three months of the year has seen punctuality improve across all services, measured by the criteria for punctuality set out by the National Transport Authority. Cork Dublin services achieved a record 98.3% punctuality. Punctuality is measured as on time or within 10 minutes of time. Compared to Quarter 1 of 2011, this represents a 6.3% increase in punctuality on Cork – Dublin services, with a continuous improvement delivered throughout 2011 and into this New Year. Collectively, the 2012 figures represent the best quarter’s performance on record. A spokesperson for Iarnród Éireann said “we continuously strive for improved timekeeping for our customers. This very strong performance is the result of the efforts of staff in every function in Iarnród Éireann, and the benefits of investment in fleet, infrastructure and other systems in recent years. They demonstrate that even in the difficult financial environment, there is a commitment from all in Iarnród Éireann to delivering the best possible service. These figures are also the raw
figures, which include delays caused by factors outside our control, so our own performance is stronger again. We will continue to focus on punctuality to ensure that these high standards are maintained and improved upon.” All of Iarnród Éireann’s Intercity fleet has been modernized in recent years, with a further 57 new Intercity railcar carriages currently being delivered and entering service. Track and signaling investment have also improved service performance, as well as improved maintenance facilities. Already, Dublin-Cork customers are enjoying free wi-fi on board. With enhanced comfort on board, and improved punctuality, the next phase in service improvement on the rail network is the roll-out of WiFi across the train fleet. All other Intercity trains, as well as DART and Commuter, will have wi-fi installed during 2012.

Doing my bit for Christina
Good Thinking! A shopkeeper was dismayed when a brand new business much like his own opened up next door and erected a huge sign which read ‘BEST DEALS.’ He was horrified when another competitor opened up on his right, and announced its arrival with an even larger sign, reading ‘LOWEST PRICES.’ The shopkeeper panicked, until he got an idea. He put the biggest sign of all over his own shop. It read: ‘MAIN ENTRANCE.’
When I lived in Hong Kong, I did voluntary work for the Christina Nobel Foundation which mostly involved manning a stall selling cards and gift items at craft fairs in various schools and hotels. One Thursday evening, in mid December, I got in from work exhausted and was looking forward to a quiet evening at home. I had just settled into a cup of tea when I received a phone call from Kim, the Fairs Co-ordinator, reminding me that I was scheduled for the 6.30pm to 8pm slot at the Marriott Hotel. Mortified, I grabbed my six year old son and then a taxi to the hotel. As soon as I arrived there Kim buzzed off. Once I had calmed down and got my bearings, the other stall holders announced that they were calling it a day and started to pack up. I didn’t get to see a single customer but I no choice other than to pack up too. I was faced with a coffin sized suitcase – thankfully on wheels, a plastic bag full of Christmas cards and several boxes of cards and candles. I abandoned the boxes and hauled the suitcase and bag to the lift lobby, down an elevator until I was on ground level. My son cantered beside me as I joined the throng of office workers as they headed, I hoped for the exit and a waiting line of taxis. The stuff was staggeringly heavy: it was like I was trying to move house all on my own. A very kind and elderly Chinese caretaker shortened his life by helping me with the suitcase and flagged down a taxi for me. Twenty minutes later, I arrived at the building that housed the Christina Noble office which was on the 6th floor. I had the telephone number of Melissa who I had been told would be waiting for me at the office. I rang her number - several times - but there
was no answer. I had to do this by myself. The building had a lift but it only operated from the first floor and so sweating like pig and with muted swearing, I hauled the suitcase and then the plastic bag up the stairs. I loaded up the lift and got out at the 6th floor. I arrived up the office door but it was locked. Through the little glass pane in the door I could see that it was dark and definitely nobody was at home. I was in a dilemma. I could just simply leave the stuff there but that didn’t sit well with my conscience and yet I was in no humour to be lugging it all home with me. I was just about to ring my husband on the mobile when suddenly the door swung open in front of me. I had been vaguely aware that my son was fiddling with the security pad on the wall beside the door but was too distracted to stop him. I whirled around and gasped, “What did you do?” He grinned triumphantly and said, “The code is 2468. Look, I’ll show you” and before I could stop him he pulled the door shut, keyed in ‘2468’ and the door swung open again. I was flabbergasted but hugely relieved because I desperately needed to use the toilet. I pulled in the wretched suitcase and bag, left a note and banging the door behind me, I ran. When I got home, I received a very apologetic phone call from Melissa who said that she had nipped out for a tea break and had her phone switched off. She paused for a beat and then adopting her most delicate tone of voice said, “Might I ask how you got in?” I told her about my son and she was shocked to learn that their office was vulnerable to burglars aged 6+. She immediately resolved to upgrade their ‘security’.

RMS TITANIC: The Lord Mayor’s Centenary Commemoration at CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory Take a trip to Cork Harbour in 1912 at CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory from 12:00 noon on Saturday April 14 2012 for the Lord Mayor’s Commemoration of the RMS Titanic. To honour the 100th anniversary of the Titanic’s journey from Cork Harbour, Cllr. Terry Shannon, the Lord Mayor of Cork is inviting the public to a free family-friendly day at Cork’s Blackrock Castle. The popular tourist
attraction will be transformed with musical and dramatic performances of the era staged within the Castle and courtyard. Visitors to the 16th Century Cork Harbour landmark will go back in time viewing archival digital footage from both the Queenstown Story and Titanic Experience and see newsreels, photographs, archives and artefacts from the era. Visitors can also take a savoury trip back in time to enjoy the tastes of White Star Line themed food from the “galley kitchen” at the Castle Café. The Castle courtyard will play host to a wide variety of entertainment: visitors will learn about the art of Celestial Navigation with Cork’s Master Mariners, and families can build a boat with Narumi at maritime origami workshops. Visitors will hear the history of the world’s second deepest harbour from Lady Kate, a 1912 time traveller, during tours of Blackrock Castle. Sounds of the era will play throughout the day with live performances by ‘First Class’ musicians, The Barrack St Band, Gary

G.A.A. FOCUS By Pat Harrington Pfizer Pitch & Putt Snippets from the local by Brendan Hayes and National Scene The national hurling league has been hugely enjoyable for a number of reasons; the fine weather, pitches in good condition, etc. The fact that three of the six teams had new management teams was another contributory factor. I disagreed with the notion of a six-team league, but that said, it meant that each game was of vital importance; each encounter had a huge significance. There was a little inconsistency in the games, e.g. Kilkenny beat Tipperary rather easily, Cork and Tipp drew and then Cork defeated Kilkenny Cork
From a Cork point of view the league has been a very positive campaign. The Rebels have unearthed some new talent. Connor Lehane has been a revelation, Darren Sweetnam has done well at midfield and Eoin Cadogan has made his mark at centre back. Once more a Cork team is scoring goals. Cork supporters have come out in great numbers to give their encouragement to the team. Jimmy Barry Murphy and his management team would appear to be getting a very good response from the panel. There are still some questions to be answered, e.g. will those older players be left on the line for the championship as they have been throughout the league? The pace and intensity will no doubt rise a few notches for the championship. Take for example the Tipp vs. Cork game. Tipp were stroking the ball around at times as if they had all the time in the world. Equally Cork were doing a lot of hand-passing with not a glove being laid on them. Yes, it was a very good game of hurling but both sides were guilty of affording too much room to the other, something that should not happen if they meet in the championship. It should prove an interesting encounter when they meet in the league semi-final.
Local Clubs
Kilkenny still the Benchmark
Though Cork defeated Kilkenny the Cats finished on top of the group. They gave Galway an unmerciful beating, and the Tribesmen did not help their own cause with some sloppy defending. Kilkenny won all the tough battles; equally they were lethal in front of goal. They were physically strong and possess the ability to win the ball in the air. The Cats are still the benchmark. Galway started brightly in the league but on any given day one does not know which team will turn up for the lads from Corribside. Canning has to come back into the team; inconsistency is their hallmark. They replaced their three players in the full forward line after 29 minutes against Kilkenny; is this a record? League Disappointment
Dublin has been the greatest disappointment in the league, losing four games and drawing one. Yes they are competitive, but not winning a game is surely not good for their confidence and consequently for their morale. They now face Galway in a relegation game. Wexford never cease to amaze. They have been living on borrowed time for a while now. Is this the year they will finally struggle in the championship? Congratulations
Congratulations to St. Frances College Rochestown who defeated De LaSalle Macroom in the final of the under161/2 Corn na gColáistí football competition. Douglas had a good representation on the Rochestown team. The college has made great headway during the last 12 months. Long may their success continue.
More next week, Pat.
