Busiest Professional Boxer in the World! Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan is one of the hottest properties in sport. One of the founder members of the highly successful Loughmahon Boxing Club based at Bessborough, Gary will be the busiest professional boxer in the world during a one month period in October/November with three professional fights lined up in Killarney, Dublin and Boston. In the meantime boxing fans will have the opportunity to see the new Celtic Warrior in action at Neptune Stadium next month, September 13th. Already ticket sales are running high for this event and anyone interested in getting tickets for the Neptune Stadium event, they are available this Thursday evening and the following two Thursday evenings between 7pm and 8pm from Mahon Community Centre, where Gary will be in attendance to pose for pictures, sign autographs or he may even sign your ticket. Gary’s last fight at Neptune was the launch of his professional boxing career and the buzz on the night was electric, this time around the roof will be lifting off the stadium. *

Well done to the Cork footballers who beat Kildare in last Sunday’s double header at Croke Park, to earn their place against arch rivals Kerry in the All Ireland Quarter Final. Commiserations to the hurlers who put up a great fight against Kilkenny but it was the ‘Cats’ who took the victory to book their place in the All Ireland semifinal and I can’t see any team stopping Kilkenny achieving the elusive 3 in a row! *

Cork still haemorrhaging jobs with 180 more to go

Fine Gael Cork South Central Senator, Jerry Buttimer, has today (Wednesday) expressed deep disappointment and anger over the announcement of 180 job losses at the Pfizer plant in Little Island in Cork which he said is a terrible blow for the workers and their families. “Reports today of further job losses in Cork are extremely disturbing as the county has been haemorrhaging job losses lately at a ferocious rate. The news of 180 job losses at the Pfizer plant in Little Island will come as a devastating blow to those who will now be forced onto the dole queues during this time of economic uncertainty. My thoughts are with them and their families during this difficult time. “Job losses of this nature do not bode well for the state of the economy as these are the sort of high-value jobs that Ireland should be attracting. I have called on the Government to set up a taskforce to determine why so many jobs are being lost in Cork in recent months and to take the matter in hand once and for all. “With the future of the second Pfizer plant at Ringaskiddy, which is also up for sale, in doubt, every effort must be made to find to secure a buyer for the plant as additional job losses would have a disastrous effect on the local economy. “The Government must deal with the cost of doing business in Ireland without delay and appropriate steps towards restoring Ireland’s competitiveness must be taken immediately. The Government must ensure investment and job creation in Ireland through the upskilling of our workforce, through investment in infrastructure and by slashing regulatory red tape. “Retraining must be offered to those being let go from the Little Island plant when it closes at the end of 2009 so that alternative employment can be secured. An attractive redundancy package must also be put in place for workers. “The number of job losses in Cork is spiralling out of control. I am calling on The Tanaiste to immediately utilise Government resources to find a buyer for the second Pfizer plant at Ringaskiddy. Leadership is needed now more than ever to ensure that further job losses do not occur. Under no circumstances can we allow the closure of the second plant in Cork.”

Re: The I.R.B. 2. Dear Editor,

Your Humble Client

In 1858, James Stephenson of Kilkenny formed the Irish Republican Brotherhood. A secret oath-bound organisation; it became known as The Fenians with a massive number of members in its early days. After a failed insurrection in 1867, the organisation became somewhat disjointed. By the 1880s, they had organised skirmishing campaign in Britain, bombing some vital targets but their membership became worn down. By the 80s and 90s of the nineteenth century, a large number of their members departed to take an active role in the Land League, the Moonlighters and Parliamentary politics. By the start of the twentieth century, they were a miniscule force on the Irish landscape. Tom Clark was the President of the Supreme council of the IRB. From 1913 onwards they infiltrated the Irish Volunteers. In the running up to the 1916 Rising, they formed a Military Council to plan an insurrection to be carried out by the Irish Volunteers. In the meantime, they became highly concerned that the Irish Citizens Army would make a pre-emptive strike for freedom before the plans of the Military Council could be put into place. James Connolly the Commander of the Irish Citizens Army, which was the military wing of the Labour Party through its weekly newspaper, was making a cry for freedom. Connolly stated that the cause of Labour was the cause of Ireland, and the cause of Ireland was the cause of Labour. Through circuitous means, the Military Council of the Irish Republican Brotherhood entered into dialogue with James Connolly and co-opted him onto the Military Council. The Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizens Army marched out on the 24th April 1916 and became the army of the Irish Republic, thereafter to be known as the I.R.A. After a week, the surrender and execution of the leaders including Tom Clark, Michael Collins became Supreme President of the I.R.B. Under the constitution of the I.R.B. Collins was the President of the Irish Republic. At the meeting of the first Dail in 1919, de Valera was elected President of the Republic. This conflict was eventually to sow the seeds of Civil War. Tomas McCurtain, who was to be martyred in Cork during the War of Independence, resigned form the I.R.B. for the following reasons, (a) there was no further need for the Brotherhood (b) the conflict of personalities claiming to be President was incompatible with the democratic mandate of the people. The majority of the I.R.B. supported Collins in support of the Treaty. After Michael Collins lost his life in Beal na Blath on the 22nd August 1922, some historians have suggested that Liam Tobin of Dublin took command of the I.R.B. A year or so after the end of the Civil War, the new State decided to reduce the size of the National Army. Liam Tobin and a small group of disgruntled officers met in Vaughan’s Hotel styling themselves in Irish Republic Organisation for to organise in 1924 Curragh Meeting. The official state line is that the supporters of the meeting saw the end of secret societies within the state, thereby implying that this was the end of the I.R.B. The main conflict on the above points were half dealt with by Garrett FitzGerald in a lecture many years ago which has made me inquire into the following: If Liam Tobin was Supreme President of the I.R.B, why would he need to form an organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Organisation? If the I.R.B. still exists to this day, I don’t believe it would be a military force, but a secret society operating like the Freemasons inside a politician or commercial organisation. I have a major question to ask people who deliver orations at Beal na Blath, and historians who outlined the life of Michael Collins and his followers who organised Cumann na Gael and Fine Gael to explain if, when and how the I.R.B as ever disabled.

Remember: This was written by a 98 year old woman; DOESN’T SHE MAKE YOU PROUD!

Yours sincerely, Con O’Mahony.

To A Bank!

A 98 year old woman wrote this to her bank. The bank manager thought it amusing enough to have it published. Dear Sir,

I am writing to thank you for bouncing my cheque with which I endeavoured to pay my plumber last month. By my calculations, three nanoseconds’ must have elapsed between his presenting the cheque and the arrival in my account of the funds needed to honour it. I refer, of course, to the automatic monthly deposit of my Pension, an arrangement, which, I admit, has been in place for only thirty eight years. You are to be commended for seizing that brief window of opportunity, and also for debiting my account €30 by way of penalty for the inconvenience caused to your bank. My thankfulness springs from the manner in which this incident has caused me to rethink my errant financial ways. I noticed that whereas I personally attend to your telephone calls and letters, when I try to contact you, I am confronted by the impersonal, overcharging, pre-recorded, faceless entity which your bank has become. From now on, I, like you, choose only to deal with a flesh-and-blood person. My mortgage and loan payments will therefore and hereafter no longer be automatic, but will arrive at your bank by cheque, addressed personally and confidentially to an employee at your bank whom you must nominate. Be aware that it is an offence under the Postal Act for any other person to open such an envelope. Please find attached an Application Contact Status which I require your chosen employee to complete. I am sorry it runs to eight pages, but in order that I know as much about him or her as your bank knows about me, there is no alternative. Please note that all copies of his or her medical History must be countersigned by a Solicitor, and the mandatory details of his/her financial situation (income, debts, assets and liabilities)must be accompanied by documented proof. In due course, I will issue your employee with PIN number which he/ she must quote in dealings with me. I regret that it cannot be shorter than 28 digits but, again, I have modelled it on the number of button presses required of me to access my account balance on your phone bank service. As they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Let me level the playing field even further. When you call me, press buttons as follows: 1 - To make an appointment to see me. 2 - To query a missing payment. 3 - To transfer the call to my living room in case I am there. 4 To transfer the call to my bedroom in case I am sleeping. 5 - To transfer the call to my toilet in case I am attending to nature. 6 - to transfer the call to my mobile phone if I am not at home. 7 - To leave a message on my computer (a password to access my computer is required. A password will be communicated to you at a later date to the Authorized Contact.)8 - To return to the main menu and to listen to options 1 through to 8. 9 - To make a general complaint or inquiry, the contact will then be put on hold, pending the attention of my automated answering service. While this may, on occasion, involve a lengthy wait, uplifting music will play for the duration of the call. Regrettably, but again following your example, I must also levy an establishment fee to cover the setting up of this new arrangement. May I wish you a happy, if ever so slightly less prosperous, Future.

poetry corner

Douglas Writers Group Barry’s of Douglas Competition The Douglas Writers Group, next meeting will take place in Douglas Library on Friday the 12th Sept at 5.30 pm. Congratulations to Frank. E. Lee on winning the Chartbusters Prize for last month. The prize for Aug comes courtesy of Barry’s of Douglas, they are offering a full lunch for two for the winner. So Writers get scribbling and have your poem/ short story ready for the 8th August. New Members Welcome! Meetings held on the second Friday of each month.

with Ronnie McGinn Every week we receive poems that deal with all the facets of human experience such as life, love, loss, joy, sorrow, hope, disappointment—all those elements faced by people in human relationships and daily events. Some are purely nature poems: butterflies, sunsets, birds, etc. Some are beautiful and tranquil, all are welcome. This week we received a poem from Laura Gaffney, unfortunately Laura gave us no information about herself, but nonetheless her poem makes soul searching reading.

A Rhythm Do you remember when we were young? And the radio would play a random song And our tired legs would jump up from the seat, Our soul got a rhythm that danced in our feet. The music gave you a feeling That you were free Like a lamb in the meadow Like a fish in the sea. • Ronan O’Gara Cork Person of Month. To mark his glittering rugby career to date, including this year’s Heineken cup win, Ronan O’Gara received a Person of the Month award and his name now also goes forward for possible selection as Cork Person of the Year. “Ronan and his team mates have established a prestigious European brand called ‘Munster’, and it’s a brand that all the money in the world could not create. So those of us, lucky enough to be Munster by birth, should be grateful to them for that alone” said Brian Crowley M.E.P. who made the presentation. Pictured l/r Ronan O’Gara, Cork Person of the Month; Manus O’Callaghan, Southern Adv. (Sponsors and Award Organiser); Brian Crowley M.E.P.; Pat Lemasney Southern Adv.

How I wish I was back in that day When music would take All our worries away, If I had known back then What I know now, Oh how I would have cried To know that I’d be sitting in A seat With a wheel on either side. Laura Gaffney Send your poem to ‘The Poetry Corner’ / Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas or you can email it direct to ronniemcginn@eircom.net. If possible keep your poem to 20 lines. forde focus Cllr. Deirdre Forde

Public Consultation on Control of Postering for Elections & Referenda Closing date 15th Sept.2008

Many times I have listened to people giving out about the amount of postering during the run up to elections, obviously they form a major and very expensive part of previous elections. The amount of postering depends on the funds available to each candidate and the level of importance he gives to this part of getting elected. Postering is very expensive and then there is the problem of disposal subsequently. The Candidate with the least amount of available funds will probably put up a minimal amount due to lack of resources. During one election I was asked to remove my posters in a local area during the judging of the Tidy Towns Competition that year and I did so, however, other candidates didn’t and I suppose that left me at somewhat of a disadvantage. The Department of the Environment has now invited comments from interested parties on the Control of same and I would urge the public to make submissions. Election and referendum posters are currently exempt from the provisions of the Litter Pollution Acts until 7 days after polling. The Minister is conscious that there is significant public concern about the scale and nature of postering that arises on foot of this exemption. Issues that arise include the use of unsuitable locations, obstructing sight lines for road users, excessive repetition and the failure to remove posters (and, in particular, plastic ties) after polling.

South Link An alternative approach would be to amend the Litter Pollution Acts to specify rules under which candidates/parties can engage in poster advertising. This would have the advantage of uniform national requirements ensuring consistency for all parties and candidates, but would remove the flexibility to adapt to local circumstances. A combination of these approaches may also be possible; this would enable local authorities to take some account of local circumstances but within a national code that sets minimum requirements in relation to election/referenda posters. Possible scope of measures The following are examples of possible measures that could be included in any new system: • Limiting posters to designated billboards or temporary hoardings • Limiting the number of posters per candidate • A code of practice on issues such as maximum poster size, biodegradability of materials and poster ties. Invitation to comment All persons and organisations are invited to submit their views on the control of election/referendum postering. Comments need not be limited to the options set out above, which are intended to be indicative only. Comments should be submitted by email or by post to the addresses listed below. Comments received may be discoverable under Freedom of Informations Acts or under the 2007 regulation on Access to Information on the Environment.By email: electionposters@environ.ieBy post: Environment Policy Section, Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Ardcavan Business Park, Ardcavan, Wexford Comments must be received, at the latest, by 15 September 2008.

Passage West Community News

Any proposals to address the issue would have to respect the need for equal treatment of voters and candidates. Possible amendments to legislation One possible approach would be to confine the exemption from the requirements of the Litter Acts to circumstances where local authorities make provision - probably through bye-laws - governing the erection of election and referendum posters. This would allow local authorities to develop requirements appropriate to local circumstances. It can be argued, for example, that different systems of postering may be appropriate to urban as opposed to rural areas However, this could result in differing requirements within a constituency within which the functional area of more than one local authority is located i.e. some Dáil, and all European, constituencies.

Liadh Fitzgerald ND BLOATING

promotes the growth of candida (unfriendly gut bacteria) and avoid yeasts which feed candida. Avoid foods which aggravate symptoms: canned/ cartoned juices, canned foods (added sugar), cheeses, cold meats, dried fruit, oranges, grapefruits, lemons, chilli and curry, mayo, salad creams, vinegar, mushrooms, relishes, smoked fish/meat, soy sauce, stock cubes, honey and white rice Eat fresh food including fruit which isn’t ripe or overripe and eat on an empty stomach Drink onion water by boiling an onion in water, allow to cool and drink or diluted peppermint water Charcoal tablets are also great at relieving gas, clearing toxins and easing bloating Take digestive enzymes with meals (unless you have gastritis, reflux or ulcers) and a daily probiotic Consider the fact that other conditions may be present i.e. parasites or candida

Bloating is a condition where the stomach feels distended and it’s usually due to a build up of gas. Here is a simple treatment plan you can put into action: Wear non-restrictive clothing and chew with mouth closed Beware bloating foods: milk, cheese, yoghurt, wheat bran, sugar, wheat, beans, broccoli, cauliflower, beetroot, onions, spinach, carbonated drinks and some fruits Avoid sugars/artificial sweeteners – a main cause of bloating Eliminate cow’s milk as the high lactose content

Questions and Answers With John Philpott

Q: Are there any alternatives to sugar? I’m trying to slim down for summer but I can’t go without sugar in my tea! I’m not keen on artificial sweeteners either. What do you recommend? A: Join Philpott and his team from Here’s Health says, If you’ve been ‘cursed’ with a sweet tooth, you’ll know only too well the damage it can do to your waistline, not to mention your teeth and the rest of your health. Sweeteners have been available since the First World War, when saccharin was used to make up for sugar shortages, but they’re not to everyone’s liking, plus they have been linked with certain health problems. You’ll be pleased to know then there is an alternative that might help. Higher Nature’s ZyloSweet is made from Xylitol, a natural plant substitute to sugar. It tastes like sugar but has 40% fewer calories and a lower glycaemic index (GI), making it ideal for those watching their weight. Its low GI of 7 (sugar has a GI of 68) means it is absorbed much more slowly into the bloodstream, which helps to prevent sugar highs and lows and keep cravings to a minimum. Good news if you’re trying to lose a few pounds! It’s healthier for teeth too and has been found to have a number of oral health benefits, which is why you often find it in chewing gums and toothpastes. Simply use in food and drink as you would sugar; it’s ideal for hot drinks and sprinkling on cereal or desserts, and there’s no chemical after-taste associated with most sweeteners. What are you waiting for? For more information, contact your local health store.

H o m e & Gar d e n • One of last Years Garden entries Bridget Moloney of Hillcourt Donnybrook

g ardening things to do this week It can seem like a little consolation that the hedge-cutting season is coming to a close. As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week. KITCHEN GARDEN - Pot up strawberries for forcing, and stand outdoors in a shaded position. Store Japanese onions, lifted and dried earlier, in a dry frost-free place where they will keep for a few months. Sow Japanese onions in the south. Prune wall-trained peaches and nectarines after fruiting, cutting out old stems and replacing with new. Lift main crop onions with a fork, and dry in the sun. FLOWER GARDEN• Trim Virginia creeper and similar climbers away from gutters and windows. Lift, divide and replant lilies, saving scales and tiny bulbs for potting up. Install earwig traps among dahlias - fill upturned pots with straw or crumpled newspaper, and invert on canes. LAWNS & HEDGES - Trim evergreen hedges for the last time. Sow new lawns on prepared sites. GREENHOUSE - Wash down the glass in greenhouse and cold frames, inside and out. Continue potting hyacinth bulbs up to 15 September for Christmas flowering. Start making up winter hanging baskets. Remove bottom leaves of cordon tomatoes, up to the lowest trusses, to admit air and light. Repot or pot on cyclamen clearing. corms once their leaves are growing steadily. Pot on greenhouse primulas into 13cm (Sin) pots. Sow greenhouse cyclamen in soil-less compost in warmth. WATER GARDEN - Continue thinning and deadheading in the bog garden. IN GENERAL - Make containers and wire compounds for leaves and compost, ready for autumn clearing. Watch out for Vine weevil grubs feeding voraciously on many kinds of plants, and treat with parasitic nematodes. Check brassicas regularly for caterpillars and clusters of butterfly eggs. Finnish summer pruning all fruit. Cut out the exhausted stems of loganberries and other hybrid berries, and tie in new canes. Water and mulch runner beans and the pods ripen Watch out for woolly aphids on apples and treat with methylated spirits.

Gardening Competition Win a pair of ornamental glass garden balls. Send your name and address on a postcard to the following address.

young @ heart by Phil Goodman Our outing to Hillsborough castle last week was very enjoyable. Many thanks to our tour guide Judy for her kindness. What a beautiful house it is where ‘Heads of State’ stay when they visit Northern Ireland, and of course the peace process and the Good Friday agreement took place there. You get a great sense of history when you visit, and of course the silver trust collection was very beautiful. It is a collection that is used on a regular basis not just for display. Our thanks to the gentleman whose name escapes me for the moment for showing and explaining to us about the collection, it is a day that we will remember for a long time, and not forgetting Nicky who organised the tour for us, thank you! Closer to home you are invited to an open day in rehab care in the Dosco industrial estate on the Douglas Rd. On Friday 15th August. There is a full programme for the day and they would appreciate our support. 10:30-11:15 Gramophone Recital 11:00-12:30 Garden potting workshop (brings along an empty window box or basket and learns how to plant) 11:30-12:00 Table Quiz 12:00-2:00 Barbecue 2:00-3:15 Brazilian and ceilli music dancing 3:30-4:30 Gramophone Recital Light refreshments will be served all day, you will agree that it is a day that you will look forward too, and support our own local community. Congratulations to Bronwyn Cross who became a granny of a beautiful baby girl, it is a lonely time when you are away from your family at such a time. We are coming to the end of our summer outings, the last one being to the Waterford glass factory on the 19th of August, but of course we will have lots of other events for our autumn programme! Make sure you include your name and address, your telephone number, and email address if you have one, and the names and addresses of two referees. Please let them have your application by 5pm on Monday 18th August.

their usual clinical self and Snippets from were finished with eight points to spare. Cork for their part lost their way after twenty minutes against Tipp the Local and the Premier County were fully of their victory. More on and National deserving Cork next week. Qualifiers Scene

By Pat Harrington

The Leinster Championship

The Leinster championship this year has been a carbon copy of the last few years. Wexford and Dublin compete well against each other but as yet the Dubs have been unable to make the breakthrough in their battles with the Slaneymen. The Laois players have given up the ghost with several of their number opting out of the county team this year. In the qualifiers they suffered bad defeats by both Waterford and Galway. Offaly played well for the first half against Kilkenny but collapsed in the second period. Wexford fell to the same humiliation against the same opposition. One wonders if the Kilkenny jersey puts the frighteners on Wexford and Offaly. An interesting statistic is that all teams in the quarter finals lost one game; Galway also lost one game but didn’t qualify. To sum up, the Leinster championship was very predictable and sadly the spectators showed their contempt in their lack of support for the championship games – a truly jaded competition.

The Munster Championship

The Munster championship this year has been just average in terms of standards and entertainment. Having said that, it has been once again streets ahead of Leinster (not a difficult achievement). To be fair Clare have been a breath of fresh air; they have really been galvanised under McNamara’s leadership. This is a clear example of harmony in the camp. The Bannermen were powerful in the first round against the Decies, albeit a Waterford side that showed precious little fight on the day. In the semi-final Limerick leaked goals and the Claremen capitalised on the mistakes of the Shannonsiders. These same Clare lads were lacking in the scoring department in the game against Tipperary though they did score seven points without reply in the second half. On the day Tipperary

The qualifiers have been an improvement on what we have seen previously. Waterford will have been pleased to have advanced though they are not playing as well as they did in previous years; at the same time they are in an allIreland semi-final again. They will not fear Tipp but they will have to improve on their defensive duties. Offaly have benefited from the qualifiers and have gained great experience and Wexford played well against Waterford. At this point in time I believe it to be a psychological situation since, when the Slaneysiders meet Kilkenny the huge lack of belief is evident.
