Play Review - The Lonesome West With their adaptation of Martin McDonagh’s The Lonesome West, Dramat have shown not only that they have in their possession some fantastic acting talent but that this season is going to be one to watch. To a packed Granary crowd, leads TadhgDennehy and Jason Moloney as Coleman and Valene, the play’s warring

brothers, dominated the Craggy Islandesque set. Dennehy was a revelation; deadpan, brooding and powerfully physical in his approach. Moloney was equally brilliant; his mannerisms and comic-timing perfectly capturing Valene’s pettiness. Both actors thoroughly convinced as brothers and their second half escalation of apologies, ending as it did with a hilarious and shocking crescendo of cruelty, needed to be seen to be believed. They were ably joined by Rowan Finken as Father Walsh and Norma Howard as Girleen, both of

Soft, Timeless Upstyles, with Faye from Artisan Hair Group

Cork’s Premier 5 Star Wella Elite Salons When styling hair for a special occasion, as always, the consultation is very important, getting information and listening to the client, from hair type and face shape to outfit choice, there are many factors to consider. Before starting my upstyles, I usually like to prepare the hair, using Sebastian’s “Trilliant”. This leaves the hair lightweight and easy to work with, while giving protection against heated styling tools, and leaving an amazing shine . Throughout the upstyle, while curling and pinning the hair into place, I like to use Sebastian’s “Re-shaper Hairspray” this lightweight hairspray is brushable , meaning I can take down the hair and re-style it, without losing hold. I usually like to curl the hair using a wand rather than a GHD, as i love the beautiful textured finish the wand gives. Re-shaper is non-sticky and also fights against humidity, which is a must with our Irish weather!!! I normally like to loosely pin the hair into place first, giving both myself and the client a chance to have a look and see if we want to make any adjustments, before pinning it securely and giving a final spray. With all my upstyles, when ready to secure my final look, for great hold I always use Sebastian’s “Shaper Fierce”, to make sure the look stays exactly where I want it to be. Last but certainly not least , for intense shine and light reflection, I like to use Sebastian’s “Shine Shaker” which is lightweight and non greasy, gives amazing shine AND has full UV protection. I love this product!!! So if you’re looking for an upstyle, or have any questions about the products we used, see our advert on preceding page, or give me a buzz in Artisan 2 on 021-4897221

whom came into their own in the powerful second half. Finken’s nervous, tortured priest providing us with a battered moral compass, and Howard’s Girleen with the love that brothers Coleman and Valene seem to lack. The tale of fraternal enmity and petty, childish conflict sparkled with McDonagh’s whip-smart humour and the cast, direction, music and set design all contributed to make the Lonesome West a highly memorable performance. Women love Oska, but who is the Oska woman? She is one who seeks the unexpected and desires to make a statement. She knows what she wants and loves life. A woman who quickly tires of trends, who is secure in her sense of fashion and style, and is curious and courageous. She is definitely never seeking the ordinary. This is a woman who is distinguished by her delight in playing with shapes and fabrics, and also by her fashion flair. She does not adhere to a conventional standard, she is humorous, smart and self confident. The Oska Autumn/Winter 2013 collection is soft and flowing, dresses and tunics in jersey are transitional and while our fitted narrow trousers are great for layering, the voluminous shapes make a bold statement. The H silhouette is new, while classic Oska styles remain integrated. Sophisticated knitwear and knitted fabrics continue to play a major role. Napped and woolly fabrics are complemented by cotton or corduroy in the new vintage dye. The wool jersey cosy fabrics surprise with such light volume. But there is nothing to compare to our Outerwear, mohair oversized coats and jackets, our much loved fitted and unstructured long and short, hooded and collared boiled wool jackets and coats in sumptuous winter shades. The colours this season are graded up to a light pastel. Berry shades of red, smoky blue, lush nuances of green, and a warm shade of honey. The neutrals are shades of brownish-taupe, complimented by melange flannels. The combination of black and winter white is rich in contrast. But it’s not just OSKA at OSKA Douglas. We also carry complimentary designer collections exclusively available at our stores, as well as fashion jewellery and scarves. Call in and say hello to us in the East Douglas Village, Douglas. Tel: 021 4365274. We have 3 other outlets in Ireland, Toormore West Cork, Greenbarn East Cork and our newest store is in the beautiful Mount Usher Gardens, Ashford, Co Wicklow. In these stores we carry both current season and outlet stock and the new Men’s Collection will be available from Mid September. We look forward to seeing you in one of our stores where we pride ourselves in our friendly personal service but should you wish to shop online we have a huge selection to choose from in both current season and outlet stock. Douglas Writers 5th Annual Family Heritage Festival Celebrating Cork Past Exhibition 2013 One of our American readers Emileine Mahoney of Hyde Park, N. Y. will be celebrating her 14th Birthday in a few weeks time. Emileine is an eighth grade home schooled student and likes Riding horses, Irish step dancing (which she taught herself for five years),she also like listening to the Chieftains and the Clancy Brothers, and playing piano. Since she’d been old enough to write words, she’s been writing stories and poems. Emileine must be one of, if not the, most talented young ladies I have ever come across in recent years. Her thought inducing poem gives us all points to ponder.

THE MOUNTAIN TALE Down a steep, steep mountainside Hidden by a hollow glen A soft and mournful whisper rises Harmonizing with the wren. It echoes from a cottage Sitting all alone And the reminiscent occupant From past days has grown old. He sits on his stoop and remembers the past How those childhood days have flown! In the bravery of manhood years Great courage he had known. But silently, so silently History goes on its way And new Irish heroes have sprung to life since Michael Collins day. so the tale of ancient glory the hero continues to say as the sun slips down the horizon And marks the closing day.

Anniversaries, Memorials, Thanksgiving Remembering Loved ones

Positive ageing week is celebrated from the 27th of September to the 5th of October. It is a festival which highlights the positive aspects of ageing, and celebrates the contribution older people have made and continue to make to their communities. For the majority of people ageing is a positive experience, for others it is a very difficult time in their life. We all need to play our part in our communities by encouraging our older people to get active and stay healthy. For the next eight weeks we will take part in gym exercise and aerobics in the pool in the Mardyke Arena. You only need do what will suit you, I would recommend this one and a half hours a week. As we know degenerative diseases such as arthritis, osteoporosis and many others can be prevented if you regularly exercise. It is also very beneficial to the mind as well as the body. Growing old is a reality and attitude has a big part to play in how we handle this and make the most of it. On the 9th of October is the 3rd annual inter-generational quiz, once again held in the city hall. The main objective of the quiz is the integration of different community groups, both city and county, who int turn connect with their local secondary school. Each team consists of two students and two older people. The students enjoy meeting older members of their communities in a fun filled atmosphere. It also provides a vital opportunity to link all community groups, to all meet and share experiences with each other. It is a true meeting of minds with the younger and older generations sharing knowledge on a whole range of topics. Last year thirty teams took part with twenty six different secondary schools included. The main sponsors are Evening Echo, Cork County Council and Cork City Council. Winners are presented with Corks own Echo Boy perpetual trophy with each member of the winning team receiving a bronze replica statue of Echo Boy. If any one group would like to enter give me a call on 4363867. Glanmire are reigning champions. There are free places available to those who would like to do computer classes. The classes are for beginners only, the advanced classes are starting in October. Anyone interested give me a call. We are going to Dublin on the 25th of September to Bord Gais Theatre to see musical Heartbeat of Home and a visit to Glasnevin cemetery on the 26th. We all feel a great sadness at the passing of Michael Glaven. Michael was a kind and gentle man who enjoyed many outings with the Young At Heart and always sang a few songs coming home on the bus. He loved to sing and took part in the Douglas over 60s on a few occasions . He will be missed greatly by all who knew him but the biggest loss is to his devoted daughters Veronica, Geraldine and Angela and grandchildren, family and friends. Thought for today “A fine is a tax for doing wrong. A tax is a fine for doing well

Cherish your yesterdays Dream your tomorrows But be Young at heart And live your todays Bye for now Phil

scene, that I had lost the gift for banter. If I wanted to fit back in, I would have to speed up my mental processes and unlock my tongue a little quicker to keep up.

After 21 years of living overseas, my husband and I moved back to Cork – lock, stock and three kids aged 12, 8 and 6. It was time. We knew that it would be a culture shock, not least because Ireland has changed utterly from the one we left in 1985; we have never lived there as a family with all the grown up things to worry about like paying a mortgage, getting the kids to school, electricity bills and running a car. We were very much looking forward to it but deliberately kept a lid on the excitement as we braced ourselves for the shocks and surprises that inevitably lay head. Every night, as the time drew nearer for us to leave Hong Kong, the boys and I would take out the map of Cork and we examine it in minute detail. The first thing that strikes you about Cork is the amount of open space and countless sports fields of which there must be at least thirty in the city alone. We had one Granny’s house marked out – second Granny lives just off the page - the cousins in Waterfall, our house and the schools to which the boys would be going. The younger two were horrified when I told them that they would have to walk to their primary school every morning because their mammy has no intention of raising her stress levels fighting the snarl up of traffic for which Douglas has become famous. They would have to don their wellies (after I explained to son number 3 what a welly was), raincoats and walk. We marked out our house with an x and their school with a circle. On the map, the entire route is only an inch. They cackled with glee when they saw that their eldest brother’s daily commute is almost two feet. Even though they went back to Ireland for holidays every summer they were anxious about the change and bombarded me with questions like, “Will the teachers talk to us in Irish,” and “Will I make friends?” We focussed on the positives such as more open space to play in, regular access to cousins and grandparents, football and GAA matches on at normal times and not at midnight, and being back in the land of real Cadburys chocolate, Ice Berger ice-creams, Club Orange, Taytos, Denny’s sausages, rhubarb crumble and cream. Actually, you can get Cadburys chocolate anywhere however, the type that is available in Hong Kong is made with palm oil - to stop it from melting but as my nephew, who visited us for a month during his transition year said, “It’s ‘cat’”. The boys I knew would be fine: like all children, they are resilient and can adapt to almost any environment. I wasn’t so sure about myself. Some years ago, we were home for Christmas and after promising myself that I would not get caught up in the craziness that is Christmas shopping, I found myself in the Next shop on Patrick Street contemplating a wooden train for one of my nephews. I couldn’t see a price on it so I went up to ask one of the cashiers. The cashier took the toy off me and announced that it was free. I looked at her in disbelief and said, “It’s free?” “Nah,” she scoffed, “the only free thing around here is abuse.” Somewhat deflated, I waited while she scanned the toy. She piped up again and said, “Guess!” I misheard and thought she said ‘Yes.’ She rolled her eyes to heaven and said, “No, I said, ‘Guess’. I was by now very confused and muttered, “Oh, ‘Guess,” and then struggling very hard to come up with a reasonable price that would not invite further derision, I offered 13 euros. The Cashier laughed triumphantly and said “No, it’s 15 euros. Do you still want it?” I was exhausted and so just nodded dumbly. Clutching my new purchase, I reeled out of the shop with my hands shaking and my head befuddled. All I could think of was that the Cashier must have thought that I was on day release from a mental institute that I could not handle a little light chat to pass an otherwise dull afternoon. The experience shocked me. It showed me that after so many years away from the Cork

ANIMAL FRIENDS by Declan Quigley Neutering

Are there benefits to neutering our dogs and cats? In one word: Yes. There are many excellent reasons for neutering.

What is neutering?

Neutering is the term used for the surgical removal of the reproductive organs in both male and female dogs, cats /Pets. Castration is the removal of the testicles of a male dog / Cat / Pet Spaying is the removal of the ovaries and uterus of a female dog /Cat / Pet

Benefits - Cancer Risk Reduced

When a male animal is neutered, his testicles are surgically removed. In doing this the risk of testicular cancer in dogs is effectively eliminated and the instance of prostate disease in dogs is greatly reduced, thereby allowing a dog to lead a longer healthier life. Female Dogs -Pyometra is a potentially fatal womb infection which is prevalent in female dogs that are not neutered. Neutering also removes the significant health risks associated with pregnancy in female dogs as well as preventing the birth of possibly unwanted puppies and Kittens

Behavioural Benefits

Neutering may encourage calmer more predictable behaviour in a dog, which can result in a healthier well behaved companion. Neutering may help diminish aggressive behaviour as well as unwanted sexual behaviour. Dogs that are neutered are less likely to mark territory or stray. Neutering reduces the possibility of altered behaviour in female dogs and Cats coming into season.

Financial Benefits

Unplanned Puppies / Kittens carry unplanned costs. Neutering also reduces the likelihood of veterinary fees associated with certain illness, the instance of which is diminished or negated by the procedure and accidents caused by unruly behaviour.

What to expect when neutering?

Neutering is a routine operation, performed under general anaesthetic. It normally involves just a day spent at our veterinary clinic. The surgery is done under general anaesthetic and is therefore painless. At The Village Veterinary Clinic we like to see your pet for a post op check in the early days following surgery to ensure everything is as it should be. This takes very little time but is very reassuring to pet owners. All stitches are usually subcuticular (in the skin) so there is no need to have them removed avoiding a potentially stressful event for your pet. I can not emphasise enough the importance of neutering, if you have any queries or would like any further advice please just give a call on 0214890101

Gardening - Things to do This Week Think about a host of golden daffodils in the spring – now is the time to plant bulbs. But don’t stop there . Plant crocus, snowdrops, bluebells, tulips, hyacinths for a beautiful spring garden. As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower Garden

Dig up early chrysanthemums, cut down stems and box up the stools; keep in a cold frame until January. Finish bringing in tender perennials, and box or pot up to keep under frost-free glass. Plant new pinks and hardy carnations on light soils - elsewhere wait until spring. Plant new rhododendrons and azaleas in acid soil, and mulch with cocoa shells. Plant container grown shrubs and trees in prepared soil, but leave bare-root plants until next month.

Kitchen Garden

Start taking hardwood cuttings of soft fruit such as gooseberries and currants, and root outdoors. Clear outdoor tomato crops or lay plants on straw and cover with cloches to finish ripening. Mix all summer lettuce varieties together with endive, chicory and other salads for sowing as a cut-and-come again mixture. Cover vacant light soil with a protective layer of manure or compost, or dig and sow a green manure. Earth up winter leeks for extralong blanched stems. If runner beans are still cropping, feed with general fertiliser

Lawns & Hedges

Lay turf on new lawn sites. Spike lawns and scarify with a wire rake or hired machine, if not done already. Greenhouse Plant parsley in a greenhouse bed or cold frame for winter supplies.. Disbud late-flowering chrysanthemums to stimulate larger blooms. Start to reduce watering and damping down generally, and water in the mornings only. Sow greenhouse radishes to crop in late November.

Water Garden

Net ponds to keep falling tree leaves from fouling the water. Continue dividing bog and marginal plants for a week or two after that wait until spring. In general Before ordering seeds check through old stocks, retaining the most recent. Test soils with a pH kit,. and make plants to adjust acidity levels where necessary.

GREETINGS READERS Introductions first, I am Michelle O’Neill the colour consultant with The Paint Store in Ballincollig, see full contact details below. You can book a FREE consultation with me any Tuesday or Thursday. I inherited my love for interiors from my mother who as they say in Cork ‘she has an eye for it’ I have renovated a number of properties and throughout this painful process I have learned a thing or two about homes which I shall be detailing to you over the next few weeks. Working as a colour consultant I encounter a variety of budgets, people and tastes.

Recently I have been happily surprised by the amount of ‘new builds’ renovations and extensions been undertaken ( green shoots perhaps) if this is you I would advise you to try a achieve a neutral canvas. Keep all the big ticket items (sofas, curtains, floors, blinds etc ) neutral. Try not to make any rash decisions, you are properly under a bit of stress. I am a firm believer in living in a space and getting a feel for it before you eventfully decide how you want the scheme to look and feel. Keeping things simple at this stage works because you can add colour later on with accessories (throws, cushions, rugs, lamps, etc). Feature walls are still a great way to

enhance a scheme the variety and choice of wallpapers is abundant as are the choice of paint colours. The current trend in neutrals is moving away from yellow based neutrals to the grey base spectrum. I am hearing a lot of ‘I’m sick of cream and would like a change’. My tip this week is colour trend’s NATURAL CANVAS a wonderful neutral with grey undertones. In softer nighttime lighting it morphs into an almost mushroom like colour and by day it bounces light around rooms which is always a good quality in our dull Irish climate. So pardon the awful pun to follow to achieve a neutral canvas go natural canvas. Michelle O’Neill, Colour Consultant

Remembering Douglas Hyde 1860-1949: by Denis Coffey

I had a brief conversation with Uachtarán na hEireann Michael D Higgins, in Clonakility County Cork recently, about my research into the life of Dr Douglas Hyde, Irelands first President 1938, The President kindly congratulated me and to conclude the President said a huge debt of gratitude is owed to Douglas Hyde and wished me well. With abstracts taken from my sixty page manuscripts I will trace the connections between Dr Hyde and the G.A.A, unveiling a few interesting facts about a truly unforgettable gentleman. Dr Douglas Hyde the prolific and acclaimed Gaelic, Scholar writer founding member and first president of the Gaelic League on the 25th June 1938, under the new constitution of 1937 Dr Hyde became the first president of Ireland, the inauguration ceremony was held in Dublin Castle. Michael Cusack a founding member of the G.A.A 1884 was a close friend of Dr Hyde who was also

PAGE 14

a member of the G.A.A. Douglas Hyde was born on 17th January 1860 in Castlerea County Roscommon, his father Arthur was a Rector of the local church of Ireland Frenchpark County Roscommon, their ancestors moved to Fermoy Co. Cork in the sixteenth century from England. Dr Hyde became a patron of the G.A.A in 1902, an honour bestowed only to a small number of people, Charles Stewart Parnell, Michael Davitt in 1884 members of the G.A.A had to refrain from playing foreign games or attending matches, known at the time as the ban. I spoke to Sean Kelly MEP former president of the G.A.A 2003-2006 in Thurles after the game between Cork and Tipperary reference rule 42, a vote taken on Saturday 16th April 2005. A motion was to allow other sports in Croke Park, to be played for Tá 227 Nil 97. The first rugby international ever played was on the 11th of February 2007 when Ireland hosted France, not long after a number of soccer internationals were also played. How times have changed. From 1938 – 1943 Padraig Mc Namee was the first Ulsterman to become President of the G.A.A, along with Padraig O Caoimh, general secretary of the G.A.A 1929 – 1964, both men held office when the first President of Ireland Dr Douglas Hyde was

removed as G.A.A patron. On November 13th 1938, Dr Hyde as head of state, in the company of the Lord Mayor of Dublin Alfie Byrne an Taoiseach Eamon de Valera, attended an international soccer match between Ireland and Poland. Ireland won 3-0. The Presidents attendance at the game under the G.A.A ban saw him removed as a patron. Dr Douglas Hyde died on July 12th 1949 and was buried in Frenchpark County Roscommon, the G.A.A ban was removed Eater Sunday April 11th 1971. I had to honour in 1984 to witness Paddy Buggy then President of the G.A.A placed a memorial plaque on the grave of one of Irelands famous son, to mark the one hundred anniversary of the G.A.A. Mr. Buggy paid glowing tributes on the day to Irelands first President, Dr Douglas Hyde in front of a huge crowd. I have been to Frenchpark a number of times over the years; it is beautiful place and well worth a visit. Now going strong for one hundred and twenty nine years the G.A.A have a great tradition and are in every parish throughout Ireland, and has spread its wings to other countries and is regarded as one of the best and most respected organizations in the world. Fall prevention

Falls put you at risk of serious injury. Prevent falls with these simple fall-prevention measures, from reviewing your medications to hazard-proofing your home. Fall prevention may not seem like a lively topic, but it’s important. As you get older, physical changes and health conditions — and sometimes the medications used to treat those conditions — make falls more likely. In fact, falls are a leading cause of injury among older adults. Still, fear of falling doesn’t need to rule your life. Instead, consider six simple fallprevention strategies.

Make an appointment with your doctor

Begin your fall-prevention plan by making an appointment with your doctor. Be prepared to answer questions such as: What medications are you taking? Have you fallen before? Could your health conditions cause a fall?

Keep moving

Physical activity can go a long way toward fall prevention. Consider activities such as walking, water workouts or tai chi — a gentle exercise that involves slow and graceful dance-like movements. Such activities reduce the risk of falls by improving strength, balance, coordination and flexibility.

Consider changing your footwear as part of your fall-prevention plan. High heels, floppy slippers and shoes with slick soles can make you slip, stumble and fall. So can walking in your stocking feet.

Take a look around your home. Your living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, hallways and stairways may be filled with hazards. To make your home safer: Remove boxes, newspapers, electrical cords and phone cords from walkways.

Light up your living space

Keep your home brightly lit to avoid tripping on objects that are hard to see.

Use assistive devices

Wedding With A Difference

Whether it’s planning a fantasy wedding, a modern commitment ceremony or renewing vows at sea with a captain-performed ceremony, Celebrity Cruises offers a range of options to make that special day come to life.

Wedding Packages Hosting a wedding with Celebrity Cruises is a unique way guests can combine their wedding ceremony and honeymoon into one complete, special package.

Celebrity Cruises offers the perfect solution with all-inclusive wedding packages arranged by dedicated coordinators from The Wedding Experience. Exotic destination weddings are becoming increasingly popular; in fact, each year, more than 300 couples say “I do” onboard a Celebrity Cruises ship. The Wedding Experience coordinates all in-port weddings and vow renewals and also helps plan weddings to be performed at sea. Celebrity Cruises’ general packages include the services of a local marriage official, a

VOW RENEWAL PACKAGES

The captain-performed wedding packages begin at $2,500.

HONEY MOON & ANNIVERSARY PACKAGES

Celebrity Cruises invites honeymooners and couples celebrating anniversaries to enjoy a romantic breakfast in bed complete with a bottle of premium champagne, two “special memories” engraved flutes, a flower-filled flex-vase, a single red rose, two 100 percent Egyptian cotton bathrobes, Godiva chocolates and a personalised certificate. Each sailing features a honeymoon and anniversary party, where the cruise director invites celebrating couples to enjoy a complimentary champagne toast, cake and dancing to live music.

CAPTAIN LED CEREMONIES

With the re-registration of Celebrity Cruises’ seven ships in Malta, it is now possible for captains to perform legal wedding ceremonies at sea. Couples cruising with Celebrity Cruises can now be joined in matrimony onboard both a docked Celebrity Cruises ship and one sailing through international waters.

AT SEA WEDDINGS

The True Love Knot Renewal Package includes a ceremony officiated by the ship’s captain in an intimate location onboard the ship; a commemorative vow renewal certificate signed by the captain; recorded ceremony music; a floral bouquet for the bride and matching boutonniere for the groom; photography service; one 8x10 photo of the couple with the captain, signed by the captain; one 8x10 photo of the ship; a bottle of champagne; two engraved champagne flutes; cake for two and breakfast delivered to the couple’s stateroom.

Each Celebrity Vow Renewals Programme can be customised further with á la carte options, such as receptions, live music, salon appointments and more.

Pricing begins at $2,195, and all weddings performed onboard the ship must be in conjunction with a cruise. A valid marriage license must be obtained from the jurisdiction in which the wedding will take place, and the number of weddings permitted on each sailing is limited.

In accordance with Maltese law, couples who wish to be married by a Celebrity Cruises captain in international waters should allow for at least eight weeks land-based lead time in order to process the required legal documents

The number of couples choosing to renew their wedding vows has increased exponentially. Celebrity Cruises, in partnership with The Wedding Experience, has two vow renewal packages available to guests: the True Love Knot Renewal and the Aisle to Isle Renewal packages.

The Aisle to Isle Renewal Package includes a ceremony led by a shipboard ceremony officiant; recorded ceremony music; a bottle of champagne; cake for two; a commemorative vow renewal certificate; a long-stemmed rose for the bride and matching boutonniere for the groom and photography service.

Royal Caribbean International introduces new Weddings at Sea Cruise line granted authority to officiate nuptials by the Commonwealth of the Bahamas Engaged couples can now experience the romance of a wedding at sea performed by the Captain, onboard a Royal Caribbean International ship, through the Royal Romance weddings and vow renewal programme. The Commonwealth of the Bahamas has approved the cruise line to conduct legal weddings onboard the world’s most innovative cruise ships whilst at sea. A Royal Caribbean International ship offers a ‘multi-destination’ wedding, able to cater to every occasion, from large parties, attended by every family member and friend, to smaller – but still unforgettable – affairs. As a special introductory offer, couples wishing to share their special moment with friends and family and booking 12 or more staterooms on a 2013 Royal Caribbean International sailing will receive a complimentary ‘Romance at Sea’ nuptial package, inclusive of the ceremony performed by the Captain, photography and more. “Thanks to the support of the Bahamas, our guests can now be married during the course of their Royal Caribbean International cruise and bask in the romance of the sea as they exchange their vows,” said Adam Goldstein, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International. “Royal Caribbean International’s staff and crew will cater the affair with our world-renowned friendly and engaging service to help make the day extra special for the couple and their guests”

WATCH OUT FOR THE DOUGLAS POST’S WEDDING FEATURE ON THE 17TH

“The Bahamas is happy to participate in this venture with Royal Caribbean International,” said Senator Allyson Maynard-Gibson, Attorney-General and Minister of Legal Affairs, the Bahamas. “This premier cruise line has been bringing visitors to our beautiful country for many years, and we know that the Royal Romance weddings and vow renewal programme will encourage even more visitors to our beautiful shores.” The Royal Romance team of wedding specialists are poised to assist couples during this momentous occasion in their lives and to help create a beautiful personalised event that reflects the bride and groom’s desires. From day one the team assists in all aspects of the wedding planning services, including any legal requirements predeparture and once onboard the Royal Romance Coordinator ensures that every last detail is taken care of. Several options can be customised, including the new ‘Royal Romance at Sea’ wedding package that celebrates a couple’s big day and includes all the essentials for creating the perfect wedding such as: a groom’s buttonhole, a 12 long-stemmed rose bouquet for the bride, cake, recorded music as well as a live soloist during the ceremony, wine, a speciality restaurant dinner for the bride and groom, photography services, including 30 8x10 prints and one CD with 15 images, champagne and strawberries in the couple’s stateroom plus the ceremony performed by the ship’s captain. The ‘Sweethearts at Sea’ promotion offers couples wishing to share their happy memories with family and friends a complimentary ‘Romance at Sea’ package when their wedding party books 12 or more staterooms on a 2013 cruise of five nights or longer, or they can enjoy a complimentary stateroom upgrade, bar service and an hors d’oeuvres reception when the party books 25 or more staterooms. Royal Romance also offers vow renewal packages, ceremonial services and customised proposals. Complementing Royal Romance’s packages is Royal Caribbean International’s honeymoon registry which continues the romance with friends and family contributing to a couple’s ideal Royal Caribbean International honeymoon cruise. Instead of buying another toaster, the couple’s family and friends can instead contribute to a dinner at a speciality restaurant, a couple’s massage, or an excursion. Couples can add all of the onboard activities they’d like into the new registry, creating a wish list where their family and friends can even contribute to the cruise fare and help make the dream of travelling to far-off places a reality. The ‘Sweethearts at Sea’ promotional offer is available for booking beginning 1 January 2013. ANOTHER BRONZE MEDAL (TIDY TOWNS)

Queen of the Sea Festival Raises €2,200 for Charity

The Youghal “Queen of the Sea” Festival raised €2,200 for two charities. Cheques of €1,100 each were presented to the two nominated charities Childline and the Youghal Lifeboat on Monday the 9th September at the Youghal lifeboat station. The money was raised during this year’s annual “Queen of the Sea” festival which took place in Youghal Co. Cork from the 12th -14th July 2013. The festival was once again a great success and had fantastic support from the local business community and the people of Youghal. The three day event was packed full of free family entertainment throughout the entire weekend. The highlight of the festival was the “Queen of the Sea” contest where local businesses got involved and put forward a candidate to represent them in this free open air event. Each girl that entered the Queen of the Sea Contest was given a sponsor card and the proceeds of these cards were given to two worthy charities Childline and The Youghal Lifeboat. The cheques were presented by this year winning “Queen of the Sea” Sarah Jane Daly who represented Brookes Supervalu. Event organisers selected these two charities to support, Childline because the theme of the festival is mainly a family

festival based around children’s free fun activities and events. Childline is part of the ISPCC (The Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) and receives thousands of calls every year. These are answered by volunteers and staff who are trained to listen and understand young people. Their telephone lines are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to every young person living in Ireland. And Youghal lifeboat because Youghal is seaside resort and port town and depends on the water based activities for much of our tourism and industry. Youghal lifeboat is a local organisation that is crewed entirely by local volunteers who are ready to put to sea 24 hours a day, 365 days a year if required. Youghal’s lifeboat station is one of the oldest lifeboat stations in Ireland as it dates back to 1839. The lifeboat exists to save lives at sea and is entirely supported by voluntary contributions.

Carrigaline Tidy Towns Committee representatives travelled to the Helix Conference Centre in Dublin for the National Tidy Towns Awards ceremony. Carrigaline were successful again receiving a Bronze Medal in the National Competition for the third year in a row. The town increased its marks by three to 282. The committee is eagerly awaiting the adjudicator’s comments and markings for the various categories in the competitions. Meanwhile the campaign continues to improve the appearance of Carrigaline.

These events were not just enjoyable and memorable, they were poignant and nostalgic as they brought the attendees down memory lane to ‘relive the happy days and nights, not yet beyond recall’. MC for the event was Mr. Ken Galvin and the celebrations were officially opened by the Deputy Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Lorraine Kingston. In her remarks she praised the people of Dunlocha for their community spirit and their proud history. Famed Dunlocha resident & former Lord Mayor Chrissie Aherne was fondly remembered by all speakers on the day. The senior residents of Dunlocha Breda Cronin, Kitty Cremen, Mary Aherne, Eily Lees, Breda Jordan, Donal Jordan & John Sheehan were chauffer driven; in vintage cars; to arrive just on time for the celebrations. Here the Senior Residents were presented with a beautiful bunch of flowers each; and gift tokens for the men! There was also something special for the newest members of Dunlocha; Caolán Sean Kenny & Darragh Philip O’ Brien who were given a specially customised Dunlocha Teddy Bear. After the cutting of the Ribbon, there were 100 green & gold balloons sent off as a poignant tribute to all the former residents of Dunlocha. Musical accompaniment by the Mayfield Brass Band added to the incredible atmosphere. Throughout the day a series of games from long ago were fondly recalled and played. There was great fun and joy as young and old participated in games like skipping, picky, alleys and much more and of course there was a very enjoyable egg & spoon race! In the afternoon an ice-cream van arrived, and to the delight of the people there was an ice-cream for everyone in attendance. As people enjoyed their ’99’ cone they were entertained by some very talented local singers with guest artist Christy gamble & music provided by Pat Fitzgerald, who came along and got the crowd dancing ‘on the hill’. Throughout the day a commemorative booklet ‘A Centenary Celebration’ was available for purchase. A wonderfully produced and insightful book, it details the origins and history of Dunlocha Cottages, the Hall of Fame of residents past and present, and includes some wonderful photographs and a poem ‘Sweet Dunlocha’ composed by Michael (Blondie) Aherne. Principal Author of this great book was Eileen Knight (nee Aherne) who is a fourth generation resident of Dunlocha No.11 and it was compiled & edited by Eileen, Vincent Cummins & Catherine Kenny. The event closed with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque located in O’Flaherty’s, no. 19 and the cutting of the Dunlocha Centenary Cake. A celebratory dance was held in Blackrock Hurling Club on Sunday August 25th. Again, there were hundreds of people in attendance that were all well entertained by the great musician Eddie Keogh, and a wonderful night was had by all. A Facebook page has been set up under the name ‘Dunlocha Cottages’. People are invited to ‘like’ the page on Facebook and share any photographs or memories they have of the centenary events. The events to commemorate the centenary of Dunlocha were organised; most effectively; by the wonderful members of the Centenary Committee: Sinead White, Shannon White, Catherine Kenny, Mary Cummins, Una O’ Leary, Eileen Knight, Noreen Cummins, Ciara O’ Brien, Vincent Cummins, John Sheehan (Treasurer) Veronica Kennefick (Secretary) & Michael O’ Shea (Chairperson). We would like to congratulate the committee & all the residents of Dunlocha Cottages on their success in organising such an enjoyable celebratory event. There was a wonderful community spirit at both events that is testament to the people of Dunlocha and their proud history. We wish you all well.

New Guidelines can be Basis for Renewed Effort to Reduce Bullying Cork South Central Fine Gael TD Jerry Buttimer has said that new anti-bullying procedures will help tackle bullying and reduce incidences of bullying in schools. Deputy Buttimer was commenting following publication by the Minister for Education and Skills of new anti-bullying procedures for schools. “The new guidelines will require all schools to have education and prevention strategies in place to deal with all forms of bullying. This is an update of existing guidelines which were last issued in 1993. It will help bring procedures in line with the changes in society and of technology and help tackle a problem which affects one in four 9 to 17 year olds. “Recently we have all become aware of the increasing problem of cyber-bullying, continuing the problem beyond the playground and into the homes of children. For the victims of bullying technology has effectively ended the refuge of the home, in some cases it means that a victim is virtually bringing the bully home with them. The Anti-Bullying Centre in Trinity College found that one in four girls and one in six boys in Ireland have been involved in cyber-bullying either as a victim, bully or both. I hope that these new guidelines, which explicitly includes cyber-bullying in the definition of bullying, will help in dealing with this troubling behaviour. “The guidelines also focus on identity based bullying, including homophobic and transphobic bullying. A person’s identity, a person’s sexuality or gender, is a core part of a person’s being, the fundamental elements of self. The Supporting LGBT Lives study that was funded by the National Office for Suicide Prevention found that 60% of LGBT people reported homophobic bullying and 35% reported homophobic comments from teachers in their schools. The strong focus on identity based bullying in these guidelines must become the basis for reducing homophobic and transphobic bullying. “I welcome the Minister’s initiative in providing much needed and up-to-date guidelines. Each school must now develop its anti-bullying policy in accordance with the procedures set out and it must be in place before the end of the current school year. Bullying can have a life-long impact; it can have a terrible and corrosive impact on our children and young people. I hope that these guidelines will be the basis for a renewed effort to combat this negative behaviour.”

Know Your Rights: Voting from hospital Question

I am in hospital for the next while and would like to vote in the upcoming referendum but I won’t be able to go to my local polling station. Can I still vote?

Answer

In order to vote in the referendum on 4 October 2013 you must be registered to vote. Every local authority is responsible for compiling and publishing a list of voters in its area. This is called the Register of Electors or the Electoral Register. You may also qualify to be on a Special Voters List if you live in a hospital, nursing home or similar institution and wish to vote at the hospital or nursing home. Applications for inclusion on the Special Voters List must be made by 25 November each year. Your first application must be accompanied by a medical certificate. At an election or referendum, you will be notified of the day and approximate time when a special presiding officer and a Garda will visit you to allow you to vote. The special presiding officer will carry evidence of his or her identity and an appointment warrant. Only the presiding officer and the Garda can be present when you cast your vote. You mark the ballot paper in secret, place it in the special envelope provided, close the envelope and present it to the presiding officer. If you need help with voting, it will be provided by the special presiding officer in the same way as at a polling station. If you are eligible for the Special Voters list but are not already included, you can apply for inclusion in the supplement list so that you can vote in the upcoming referendum. You must apply at least 22 days (excluding Sundays and public holidays) before polling day. This means the latest date for receipt of applications to the Special Voter supplement list is 9 September 2013. Application forms are available from your local authority. Return your completed forms to the local authority. Know Your Rights has been compiled by Blackrock Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public. Claiming an exemption from the Local Property Tax up to 2016 Did you buy a residential property in 2013? You may be exempt from Local Property Tax up to 2016.

The exemption originally only applied to first time buyers but due to an error in drafting of the legislation anybody who purchases a property in the period 01 January 2013 to 31 December 2013 can claim this exemption if they qualify under all of the conditions.

What if you paid the tax already?

Refunds are available and the Revenue will be contacting those concerned as soon as possible.

When must the property be purchased?

The property must be purchased between 01 January and 31 December 2013. If the property is purchased after the 01 May 2013 a liability will already exist for 2013 so it may happen that the exemption only applies for the years 2014 -2016 in that event.

Sole or main residence

The person who purchases the property must occupy it as their sole or main residence before the exemption is claimed and continue in occupation to avoid the termination of the exemption.

When is the exemption terminated?

The property ceases to be exempt when it is sold or otherwise transferred such as by way of gift or inheritance or when it ceases to be used as a sole or main residence.

Example

Mary completes the sale of a house to John on 03 May 2013. Mary is liable for LPT for the year 2013. John qualifies for an exemption in respect of LPT for the years 2014-2016. John will not have to pay the LPT for any of the exempt years unless he forms the view that the chargeable value that was declared by Mary was not reasonable. Where this happens he should submit a return to the Revenue with a revised chargeable value and claim the exemption on this return.

Central Bank Governor to attend Finance Committee Cllr Kieran McCarthy

The Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform has requested the Central Bank Governor Professor Patrick Honohan to address the committee having concluded its hearings with banks on how they are meeting targets to provide sustainable, long-term solutions for homeowners in arrears. Committee Chairman Ciarán Lynch said: “Having concluded ours hearings with the banks, the Committee agreed to invite the Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland to appear before it on Wednesday, 25th September to discuss our deliberations with the banks in more detail. In preparation for this meeting, the banks have been asked to give a full breakdown of their resolution processes and how they have been applied to distressed borrowers. We are also asking the banks to include other resolutions with struggling homeowners outside of the Central Bank’s prescribed formulas which the various financial institutions consider sustainable and all other resolutions that they have examined that are outside of those prescribed by the Central Bank. Other issues we will be looking at are how some of the resolutions reached with customers vary from one bank to another – for instance, some banks are using the option of split mortgage solutions more than others. Another issue of particular concern which we will be considering is how correspondence to distressed borrowers who have not been in communication with banks has been included within some of the banks’ targets of sustainable solutions. Also of concern is the availability to payment brakes or modest credit in emergency situations for customers involved in resolution processes whose expenditure has been fixed by those resolution processes.” Ciarán Lynch TD, Constituency Office, 29 St. Patrick’s Mills, Douglas. It was fitness that was the main difference in the teams today.Cors started well and were in control for most of the first half going ahead in the 13th minute by a well taken Stephen O Sullivan goal.Cors badly needed a second before half time as they began to tire but it was Douglas Hall who equalised when Cors failed to clear defence from a corner. The Hall proved stronger in the second half as they began to come into the game going ahead mid way through. Corinthians still battled and did not deserve to concede a third from a long shot by the Hall striker. Late on in the game Corintians could have made a nervous ending had they not missed a penalty and also Aaron Purcell tested the Hall keeper in the dying minutes.Sean Canny in goal had an outsatnding performance while Paul Mc Glone, Daniel Tyner and Cathal Kelleher also played well for Cors.

Cork Women’s F.C. taste defeat in Galway rout Cork Women’s F.C. met Galway Women’s F.C. for the first time during blustery conditions in Eamonn Deacy Park, hoping to gain their first win of the season. However the Galway club proved too strong for the Leesiders running out three nil victors on Sunday. The Cork side started well and 15 minutes in – Lynsey McKey had a chance to open the scoring but fired wide of the target after good linkup play up front for Cork. Two minutes Later – Mary White’s free kick was spilled by Casserly but she quickly regained her composure to gather at the second attempt. However, after some early jitters, Galway settled into the game and it was one-way traffic from then on. First Sinead Taylor was then put through one on one with Cork’s keeper Trish Fennelly, who pulled off a superb stop diving low to her left to keep the scores level. Lucy Hannon then fired over before Ruth Fahy was upended in the box to give the Galway club the chance to take the lead from the spot. However Sinead Taylor spurned the opportunity firing over to leave the scores level after 25 minutes.

Galway continued their heavy pressure when Taylor rounded Fennelly and put the ball into the back of the net only to see the offside flag being raised, a big let off for the Cork club. However, the home side were not to be denied much longer as they took the lead on the 35 minute mark when Jenny Byrne hammered the ball home from five yards after the Leesiders failed to deal with a corner. Only five minutes into the second half, the Galway club doubled their advantage when Hannon slotted the ball calmly under the outrushing Fennelly. The stopper then prevented Jenny Byrne from adding to her tally when saving her header 25 minutes into the second half. However, they would not be denied for long as substitute Meabh Coleman fired past Fennelly to put the Galway club three nil ahead. The Cork Keeper picked up a suspected broken leg from trying to prevent the goal and the Cork club will be left sweating to see the extent of the injury in the coming days. A difficult day for Cork as they travel back to Leeside, still looking for their first result of the season.
