Crosshaven’s Kevin remembered with special day By Frank K Hanover
Crosshaven man Kevin Gregan was especially taken with the work carried out at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin and the Ronald McDonald House where parents of sick children stay. This was work he saw as vital and which needed the support of everybody who felt as committed to the medical care of children as Kevin himself was, due to the care taken of grandson Ryan, who benefited from the skills provided there. Tragically, Kevin died a while back but he’d have been delighted to have congratulated Nicola Byrne, also from Crosshaven, who Nicola Byrne, Crosshaven, winner of the Kevin’s Day draw for a 2-week family holiday in France courtesy of Keycamp Holidays and Brittany Ferries, receives her prize from Colette Forde, managing director Keycamp Cork. This week we have a poem from Dinny O’Driscoll of the “Poetry from the Heart” group in Fermoy. Here is a truly inspired poem, a poem of personal feelings with a sincerity that reaches into the very soul of the reader. Yet this extraordinary poem is deceptively simple. You might say that its simplicity, its graphic realism is achieved with consummate art; I would prefer to say that its art is achieved by the poet’s personal involvement in the scene, the physical presence of what he observes and how these things preternaturally alert his consciousness. He does not simply describe the scene; he creates it, and makes it unforgettable. It is like a ghost-story with no action, a brief emotional suspense achieved with the utmost verbal economy. At Cunnningham’s Cross That October night, a torment climbed me out from under my blanket and I set for Cunnningham’s Cross to find some sleep. My feet pulled my memory back to a small boy evening, when the pockets of my father’s pure wool coat held more than a tobacco-littered hanky and a pack of his favourite Gold Flake. Where a blanket of stars held the love words he whistled, to me his little star. Progress on Building of new Meals-on-Wheels Kitchen
The foundations, the rising walls to floor level and the building under-floor drainage are substantially complete and the ground floor slab is about to be poured.
Fund Raising Efforts for Building We are struggling on to meet our target for fund-raising for 2013 which is a push at the best of times, but with the everyday financial struggles many families are experiencing, this obviously has a knock-on effect on our efforts. People are time-poor also so our core group of volunteers are often over-stretched. Our recent Harvest Day in the Park was a well-organized, great all-round fun event, but because the weather left us down on the day. It would really lighten the load if small groups of people could get together and organize an event such as a coffee-morning in their homes, a locally sponsored walk/road-race, a cake-bake, a pub quiz, etc. to raise some money.

A Church Collection will be held at St. Columba’s Church for the annual costs of running the community centre itself on Sat 26th and Sun. 27th Oct. Bag packing will be held at Dunnes Stores, Douglas Court, on Fri. 25th and Sat. 26th October for our building fund and we urgently need volunteers to help out. If you, or a member of your extended family can help out for an hour or two, please contact Mary at 087-6998510. Hall Rental – Other Trip Down Memory Lane for Residents of Douglas
Douglas is a place steeped in history since it emerged as an industrial village during the eighteenth century. Since then, its extension far and wide beyond the suburbs focal point in the village is a natural response to population growth and the desire of people to make Douglas their home. While the physical landscape of the greater Douglas area has changed, a connection with the past continues to resonate in the village and on Friday 18th October former and current residents of Douglas are invited to the Douglas GAA Club for a night of nostalgia and reminiscence. This is a great opportunity for friends to meet up and share stories of Douglas long ago. Entertainment will be provided by the Kiely Walsh Dancers and later in the night D.J. Matthew McAuliffe will be rolling back the years with a selection of 60’s and 70’s music. Light refreshments will be available, start time is 8pm and cover charge is €3.

Tidy Towns – now an extra team on Sundays! Tidy Towns volunteers meet in the Community Park on Saturday morning at 10.30 and work until 12, around the village and surrounds, picking up litter. New volunteers are welcomed with open arms and provided with a high-viz jacket, gloves and a pick. There is now a second group of volunteers covering Sunday mornings as
Douglas Village in the early 1970’s
some Saturday night revellers throw their litter around the village areas and it remains there for the week. This war against litter is an uphill battle and in the absence of any sanction for these anti-social acts, it will continue. The Tidy Towns people for this tremendous effort on behalf of the citizens of Douglas, the motto ‘it’s better to light one candle than to curse the darkness’ comes to mind.

Halloween can be a fun event for families and their pets. However, if safety precautions aren’t taken, it can also be a hazardous time for our fourlegged
Pet Costumes - The Dangers
If you choose to dress up your dog or cat be mindful that pets can become tangled in elaborate, tight-fitting costumes with strings and belts leading to possible injury, including strangulation. Never leave a pet unattended while wearing a costume. Small (or large) parts of a costume can become chewed and ingested..
Halloween Decorations – Choose With Care If you like to decorate your home for Halloween, take care. Easy to reach decorations and candles can be eaten or knocked over, potentially leading to choking, foreign body ingestion, electrical shock, burns and fire. Keep decorations out of the reach of your pet
Noise – Stress and Anxiety
Dogs and cats can become skittish and anxious at Halloween due to the constant ringing of the doorbell, noise and the use of fireworks. Strangers dressed in unfamiliar and scary costumes can alarm some pets, increasing their anxiety. Consider putting up a baby gate or leaving your dog or cat in a back room of

the house which would keep them calmer throughout the evening. If you are concerned that your pet will become anxious Kalm Aid is an effective liquid suspension which promotes relaxation and reduces nervous irritability. It can be safely given through your pets food in the days preceding a stressful event like Halloween.
Chocolate and Sweets Toxicity
Sweets and chocolate are never good for dogs or cats and on Halloween there is an increased chance that your pet may consume these. Chocolate and Xylitol, a sweetener found in many Sweets, can be extremely toxic to pets. Lollipops can be a choking hazard and may cause an obstruction or foreign body ingestion that may require surgery to remove. Sweets wrapped in plastic and other types of wrapping can also lead to chocking or cause an obstruction and upset stomach. Keep these human treats out of the reach of your pet.
Lost Pets
Halloween is not the time to let your dog or cat wander outside attended. Take care and keep pets indoors with you, or on a leash if you are going outside. Sudden noises and strange-looking costumes can spook your pet, causing them to run away. It is always a good idea to ensure your pet has a collar with an identification tag, in case you become separated. If your pet is not already Micro chipped now might be a good time to have do so. will follow on every Thursday in November. The Mens Shed is very pleased with the great response they are getting to their appeal for timber and old tools and equipment. All the old tools and equipment are being cleaned and restored and where feasible are painted in their original colours for public display. The long-term plan is to have all the collected items exhibited in a future Carrigaline museum. More old items of interest are welcome. Last Wednesday Sandra Graham of Funky Junk gave a talk and demonstration to the members on how to “Upcycle” furniture and turn discarded items i.e. junk into ornaments and something useful. She offered to give our members of the Mens Shed an art course on turning throwaway furniture into something useful and to be admired. New members and visitors are always welcome at the Mens Shed. Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Bill 2013 (“The Bill”) Current Approach
No. of children perpetrating sexual abuse against other children is a serious cause for concern Rape Crisis Network of Ireland report details harrowing statistic which show 37% of child sex abusers are themselves under 18 years. Fine Gael Cork South Central Deputy and Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children, Jerry Buttimer, said the launch of the report at the Rape Crisis Network of Ireland AGM today (Wednesday) makes for distressing reading which will force us to examine the result in exceptionally close detail. “This report, ‘Hearing child survivors of sexual violence Towards a national response’ is based on data which has never before been used and comes from 16 Rape Crisis and Children at Risk in Ireland (CARI) branches. Reports of this nature always make for uncomfortable reading but none so much as when, as is the case with this, it details the fact that more than a third of abusers are themselves children under 18 themselves. “This startling statistic, which also indicates that 97% of those children who are abusing are male, will force us to examine the reasons why such a high level of childhood sexual abuse is being carried out by our children; are they themselves victims of abuse, is children’s exposure to inappropriate content on the internet playing a part or are there other factors that need to be considered? “We know that most people who have been abused do not go on to abuse. However, a high majority of those who carry out abuse have themselves been abused. Ireland has a horrible past when it comes to a history of adults abusing children. This report will be a cause for serious reflection, however, on how and why such high levels of abuse being perpetrated by our young boys. “I welcome the Minister for Children’s commitment today to the development of a coordinated national approach for sexual and abuse services for children and young people. The Minister has requested that the HSE proceeds with filling four posts of regional coordinators and this will assist in better managing services on a national level. Furthermore, four regional coordinators posts are to be filled for services for children demonstrating sexually harmful behaviour. “Our children are growing up in a world that is unrecognisable when compared to that of their parents’. This report will be important in charting the road ahead and in determining the best way of ensuring that our children are safe and supported in a society that is free from childhood sexual abuse.”

The current approach to capacity in Ireland is archaic and is based on a medical assessment of the individual. The current status is “all or nothing”. The Bill proposes to change this so that capacity is assessed only in relation to the matter in question and only at the time in question. If a person is found to lack decision-making capacity in one matter this will not necessarily mean that they lack capacity in another matter.
What does the Bill aim to do?
The Bill aims to modernise the law and support decision-making by adults who have difficulty making decisions without help. The Bill aims to “safeguard the autonomy and dignity of the person with impaired capacity”.
Guiding Principles of the Bill
There will be a presumption of capacity unless the contrary is shown: Intervention will only take place where necessary; Only where all practical steps have been taken will a person be treated as being unable to make a decision The persons rights and freedoms will be respected at all times; The persons will and preferences will be taken into account at all times.
Three types of Decision Making Support Options The Bill proposes three types of decision-making support options which are:-
*Assistant Decision-Making – an assistant is appointed to support him or her to understand and make the decision; *Co-decision making – a person is appointed to make decisions jointly; *Decision-making representative – (for the minority of people who are unable to make decisions even with help) the Circuit Court appoints a representative to make decisions on behalf the person.
Other areas covered by the Bill
The Bill also expands the powers afforded to Attorneys in relation to Enduring Powers of Attorney. It also deals with instances where informal decision making takes place on a regular basis and provides protection from liability for those involved in the informal decision making process. It proposes the replacement of the Wards of Court office with the Office of Public Guardian to deal with capacity-related matters for adults. In 1888 Queen Victoria conferred on Belfast the title of city, and it was agreed that time had come for a new city hall. This magnificent building is a lasting landmark to Belfast‘s success and civic pride. My first visit to Belfast was in 1982 and I wrote a favourable article about the city which appeared in Cork City newsletter, under the headline amazing endeavours by unique people. Belfast Corporationacquired one and a half acre site, work began in 1886 to build a new city hall, it opened its doors on the first August 1906. Visitors at the main entrance will see the impressive and stunning marble floors, grand staircase, the large stained glass windows, some depicting the Belfast Coat of arms and other prominent historical events, such as the longest serving Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress Sir Crawford and Lady McCullagh. The Mayors Chain of Office dates from 1874 when it was presented to the then Mayor, James Alexander Henderson. The title Lord Mayor did not come into usage until 1892; four years after Belfast became a city. Belfast city council sits on the first working day of each month it has 51 members. DEPRESSION
Depression is one of the most common health conditions in the world. Depression isn’t a weakness, nor is it something that you can simply “snap out of.” Depression, formally called major depression, is a medical illness that involves the mind and body. It affects how you think and behave and can cause a variety of emotional and physical problems. You may not be able to go about your usual daily activities, and depression may make you feel as if life just isn’t worth living anymore. Most health professionals today consider depression a chronic illness that requires long-term treatment, much like diabetes or high blood pressure.
SYMPTOMS
Symptoms of depression include: Loss of interest in normal daily activities, Feeling sad or down, Feeling hopeless, Crying spells for no apparent reason, Problems sleeping, Trouble focusing or concentrating, Difficulty making decisions, Unintentional weight gain or loss, Irritability, Restlessness, Being easily annoyed, Feeling fatigued or weak, Feeling worthless, Loss of interest in sex, Thoughts of suicide or suicidal behavior, Unexplained physical problems, such as back pain or headaches. Depression symptoms can vary greatly because different people experience depression in different ways. A 25-yearold man with depression may not have the same symptoms as a 70-year-old man, for instance. For some people,

depression symptoms are so severe that it’s obvious something isn’t right. Others may feel generally miserable or unhappy without really knowing why. It’s not known specifically what causes depression. As with many mental illnesses, it’s thought that a variety of biochemical, genetic and environmental factors may cause depression.

Depression generally isn’t an illness that you can treat on your own. But you can do some things for yourself that will build on your treatment plan. In addition to professional treatment, follow these self-care steps for depression: Take your medications as directed. Even if you’re feeling well, resist any temptation to skip your medications. If you stop, depression symptoms may come back, and you could also experience withdrawallike symptoms. Pay attention to warning signs. Get active. Physical activity and exercise have been shown to reduce depression symptoms. Consider walking, jogging, swimming, gardening or taking up another form of exercise you enjoy. Avoid drugs and alcohol. CYCLE LANE IMPROVEMENTS FOR DOUGLAS Cork County Council is set to go to public consultation with its next stage of the Douglas Land Use and Transport study. Cork County Council plans to implement the next stage of its cycle lane development for Douglas which will follow on from the soon to implemented cycle lane development in the Mangala woods which will see Bracken Court in Donnybrook linked with Douglas. The new plans will propose a new cycle lane which will link Amberley Heights to Douglas village. The proposals from officials will see a new cycle lane running along Inchvale road on the grass verge that runs parallel to the road. The plans will include long needed traffic calming along the Inchvale road. The proposals will also include two cycle lanes under both flyovers which will link up with the city cycle system. Independent Cllr. David Boyle says,” I welcome the proposal from traffic calming on the Inchvale road. This has been badly needed and has been requested for some time. The intension is slow the travelling speed of the cars at the Oakview side of the road. The proposals for the cycle lanes will go to public consultation in the next few weeks and people will get their chance to have their say”.

Eighteenth Century Cork Historical Walking Tour The weather is still relatively mild, so Cllr Kieran McCarthy’s next historical walking tour is on Saturday 26 October 2013 –Making a Venice of the North, Exploring Eighteenth Century Cork City - explore a world of canals, and eighteenth century Cork society, meet at Cork City Library, Grand Parade, 2pm (E.5, duration: two hours). For nearly five hundred years (c.1200-c.1690), the walled port town of Cork, built in a swamp and at the lowest crossing point of the River Lee and the tidal area, remained as one of the most fortified and vibrant walled settlements in the expanding British colonial empire. However, economic growth as well as political events in late seventeenth century Ireland, culminating in the destruction of the city’s core in 1690, provided the catalyst for large-scale change within the urban area. The walls were allowed to decay and this was to inadvertently alter much of the city’s physical, social and economic character in the ensuing century. By John Rocque’s Map of Cork in 1759, the walls of Cork were just a memory- the medieval plan was now a small part in something larger – larger in terms of population from 20,000 to 73,000 plus in terms of a new townscape. A new urban text emerged with new bridges, streets, quays, residences and warehouses built to intertwine with the natural riverine landscape. The unofficial title of the Venice of the North was given to Cork in the eighteenth century. This was a type of branding exercise, a cultural code in a sense, a reference by native and foreign merchants that Cork was part of several cities in northern Europe (Saint Petersburg, Amsterdam, Bruges, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Hamburg, and Manchester) that contained canals, all compared to the enduring connection with water in Venice, Italy over many centuries. Cork and other cities in northern Europe were to be conditioned by ideas of the ideal city tradition. During the post medieval centuries European artists and engineers began to represent political and social ideas and concepts in graphic terms. In truth, this encouraged planners to imagine the ideal port city as a complete unit of which the river, harbour, or canal was an integral part, conceptually and figuratively. INGREDIENTS 3 LARGE COOKING APPLES ½ POUND OF FROZEN MIXED BERRIES OR PLUMS, RHUBARB 12oz OF SUGAR 1LB OF FLOUR 12oz OF PORRIDGE OATS 12OZ OF BUTTER OR MARGARINE 8oz OF DEMORARA SUGAR
METHOD 1) Peel and chop apples into slices and layer with berries and sugar into shallow oven proof dish, pop in the microwave to cook for 5 minutes , just to start the apples off. 2) Place flour, spice and butter into large bowl and rub into flour as if making pastry, when it looks crumbly add oats and sugar and mix well, 3) Sprinkle crumble topping over fruit, about an inch thick, and sprinkle with a little brown sugar and flaked almonds if you like, 4) Cook in medium hot oven gas 7 or 200o electric for 40 mins until golden brown, serve with custard or vanilla icecream YUMMY!!! www.trulyscrumptious.ie

LYNCH URGES B.O.I. TO GO FURTHER ON SPLIT MORTGAGES Labour TD, and Chairperson of the Oireachtas Finance Committee, Ciaran Lynch has given a measured welcome to news that Bank of Ireland are lowering their interest rate on split mortgages, but stated he believes the bank needs to go even further so its approach is consistent with other banks. The Cork South-Central TD was responding to confirmation from Bank of Ireland’s CEO, Richie Boucher, that the bank is lowering the interest rate for customers on variable rates who avail of split mortgages.“I would give a measured welcome to this decision by Bank of Ireland to soften its approach to those on split mortgages, specific to those on the variable interest rate. I also note that it is a direct outcome of the bank engaging with the Finance Committee in recent weeks at which this concern was brought to their attention.“However, I don’t think it goes far enough. It continues to be the case that Bank of Ireland is keeping the non-active side of the mortgage ‘live’ by requiring customers to continue paying interest on the warehoused portion of the mortgage. By insisting that distressed customers do this, Bank of Ireland is completely out-of-kilter with other financial institutions like AIB or Permanent TSB who charge no interest. Not only is it leading to inconsistency across the banking system, but it is also resulting in an inconsistent approach to distressed Bank of Ireland customers as it differentiates between those on tracker and those on the variable interest rate. “Whilst we must be thankful that some progress is being made, we need the approach to be more consistent. I would also encourage Bank of Ireland to explore other solutions, such as the concessionary mortgage resolution being offered by Ulster Bank at the moment.“This issue of inconsistency was raised with the Governor of the Central Bank, Patrick Honohan, when he appeared before the Committee last week and I was assured that he intends to look into it as part of a broader auditing exercise into Bank of Ireland. People need to be offered sustainable, long-term solutions that enable them to work their way out of debt and see a light at the end of this tunnel.

Cork Women’s F.C. Cork Women’s F.C. will play their first game ever under floodlights in Saint Coleman’s Park as part of the upcoming Cork Rebel Week on Saturday 19th October 2013. Cork Women’s F.C. will face Wexford Youths WFC in Cobh Ramblers home stadium of Saint Coleman’s Park in the Bus Éireann Women’s National League game in association with Cork Rebel Week. The game will kick-off at 7PM, which will be a new time for the Cork club who generally play their home games in the afternoon. Cobh is one of the host towns for Rebel Week, and this game will hopefully give football supporters of all ages in Cobh and the surrounding area a chance to sample the Women’s National League. Board member Pat Healy had this to say “We’re delighted to be involved with Cork Rebel Week – anything that helps promote the strong culture that can be found in Cork is something that Cork Women’s F.C. fully supports. We’re also extremely grateful at being able to use Cobh Ramblers’ home ground for our first game under floodlights. We have an association with Cork City F.C. since the beginning of this season – and it’s great to see how the Cork National League clubs are able to work
together to improve Cork as a community.” The Cork club have recently added some players to their squad with Elaine Walsh, Michelle Brown, Ali Roche and Val Leahy coming on board at the Leesiders, with Lyndsey McKey moving on to rivals Galway WFC.
