Ida Lee is no stranger in the world of literature and one can easily understand why after reading this week’s poem. Ida tells us that the poem was not written by her, but by her cat ‘Sherkin’ and quite understandably Ida just wrote what her cat told her to write and had nothing to do with the creativity of the poem itself. Apparently Sherkin’s favourite hymn has a line in it that says “Such as I am without a plea”. Sherkin of course did her own version which goes; “Just as I am without one flea”. In today’s world it comes as a refreshing relief to find something, especially a poem, with a sense of humour. Thank you Ida!

Douglas Tidy Towns Competition
Our local group of very hardworking, dedicated volunteers were thrilled with the great improvement of an extra 6 marks in this year’s competition over last year, bringing their total this year to 272 marks. Douglas is now in Category H and competed with towns such as Bray, Co. Wicklow (273 marks), Galway City Centre (275 marks), Limerick City Centre (258 marks) and Swords Co. Dublin (267 marks). Moynalty, Co. Meath was the overall Tidy Towns winner this year with 316 marks. Kenmare won Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town with 312 marks, Killarney won the tidiest large town with 315 marks. The Tidy Towns initiative is highly successful, and in four years the number of areas entering has increased by 100% to 800 entrants this year. Pride in our local areas is growing and with the tourism figures up by 14% this year, it’s a no-brainer that making our country look its best will increase visitors to local areas, support local businesses and we all benefit. Thanks to all at Douglas TT for their

effort as well as the businesses throughout Douglas who made the village dazzle over the last few months. We also thank the people of Douglas, the many individuals and groups who look after their area but are not directly involved with DTT. Also we got great support from the Scouts (Douglas and Grange-Frankfield) and the Probation Service. www. mindfreedomireland.com

DCA Update 30th Sept. 2013
There was plenty of action in the park at our Harvest Festival last Sunday, the festival area strewn with freshly-cut hay bales creating the country atmosphere, and great live music from a Country and Western band, “Off the Cuff” all the way from Kerry. You can’t get further west than that! As soon as the music started, they lifted the spirits of the many people who came to support our fund-raiser for the DCA building fund. There was a great line-up of activities, with Sharon Piper’s carousel and candy floss stall for the kiddies, face painting, jewellery, horse riding, horse-shoe and wellie-throwing competitions and a very competitive tug-ofwar between local businesses. Tesco fought against DCA team in the semi-final, Barry’s took on rival publican O’Sullivan’s in the semi-final. There was a nail-biting finish with Tesco and Barry’s tugging and heaving til finally Barry’s won! They were presented with the Perpetual Cup and the winner’s plaque and medals. Tesco won the runners-up plaque having put
up a very honourable fight.
A group of young people from Christ Jesus Centre Church, at Donnybrook Commercial Centre, with Pastor Olatunde Bello and his wife Mary, from Nigeria, entertained us with some dancing and rapping. Pastor Bello explained that the youth from their church are encouraged in bible studies, and also drama and singing and they look forward to celebrating their 7th annual convention on Sat. 2nd November. In the early afternoon before the rain set in, the park was buzzing with all the activities. The wellie throwing in particular was very popular. Bill Perrott, pictured with his prized goodiebag, showed his vast farming experience in this event but was beaten in the final by Patrick Bresnan, our local butcher’s son, (who cooked sausages and burgers for the day), took the big prize. Dance teacher Frankie and her Funky Dancers, who included one brave man, Harry O’Halloran, entertained us with their line-dancing exhibition and despite the rain, which grew with intensity over the course of the afternoon, the event was all-round great craic.

Donnybrook - Mangala cycle lane. The aim of the plan is to allow for safe cycle/pedestrian access to Douglas from Donnybrook and Maryborough Woods. The project will include the construction of a 3.0m wide paved cycle path, public lighting, associated drainage works, two new pedestrian/ cycle bridges and upgrades to the existing bridges. The track will commence at Church Road and follow the Ballybrack stream branching out into exits at Donnybrook Hill, Berkeley/ Maryborough woods with links to Cherrygarth and Bracken Court for a total distance of 1.5km. It is intended that this will encourage residents including children to use the cycle path to get to school in the morning and also to encourage adults to

use this path to get to work where applicable. The path will link up with the city cycle path. Independent councillor David Boyle says, I welcome the start of the new cycle lane in the Mangala and Donnybrook. It will be a great amenity for all to use. It will allow much safer access to Douglas for young people who wish to cycle or walk to Douglas therefore helping reduce the traffic in the morning. It will link up with the city cycle path allowing people to cycle more safely to the city. It is due to start construction in the next few weeks.

ANIMAL FRIENDS by Declan Quigley
Don’t Wait Vaccinate!!
Young animals, just like children, are at risk from many infectious diseases. In many cases there is no treatment for these and young puppies or kittens who catch them often die. Protection against these deadly diseases can be provided by vaccination. To keep your pet fit and healthy make sure they complete an initial course of vaccinations and then receive regular booster Jabs. The most important vaccinations are those given to young animals. In most cases a course of injections is given between the ages of 8 and 12 weeks ‘Booster’ vaccinations are given at 15 months and then at intervals throughout their life.
Are vaccines safe?
Vaccines are powerful substances and should be used with care. It is important that a vet perform a health check before administering a vaccine.
What vaccinations are there?
The most common vaccines administerd to dogs are against: Canine distemper Canine Infectious Hepatitis Canine parvovirus (‘parvo’) Leptospirosis (Weil’s disease) Kennel Cough (Infectious Tracheobronchitis) Rabies The most common vaccines administerd to Cats are against: Herpes Virus Calici Virus Feline Parvo Virus Feline Leukaemia Virus Chlamydia
When Should I Vaccinate?
Puppies and Kittens are protected against many infectious diseases through
PAGE 8
compounds called antibodies, which they receive in the first few hours from their mother’s milk (colostrum). At about seven weeks the immunity provided by the mother begins to wear off. For most of the above diseases, puppies are given their first vaccination at about eight weeks and then given a second vaccination at ten weeks. Kittens are given their first vaccination at about nine weeks and the second vaccination at twelve weeks. Until your puppy or kitten has received all its injections (and for a few days after), it should not mix with other dogs or cats unless you can be certain that they are fully vaccinated and free of disease
Why do dogs and cats need repeat vaccinations?
The protection given by most vaccines wears off in time and at different rates for each particular vaccine. Repeated vaccination is necessary to maintain adequate immunity . If your pet has missed the date of its regular booster vaccination by a year or two, it is safer to start again with a new course of injections. It is wise to vaccinate your pet against the potentially life threatening diseases mentioned above, The risk to that very important member of your family is very significant should you fail to vaccinate. The cost associated with the treatment your pet may require should they contract any of these preventable diseases is far greater than the cost of vaccinating. Don’t wait vaccinate! If you require any further information or clarification regarding vaccinating your pet please do not hesitate to call the clinic on 0214890101
Gardening - Things to do This Week Don’t forget to start planting those bulbs now to give you a beautiful Spring garden. Garden Centres are well worth a visit, particularly because you can get some expert advice and some very helpful ideas. As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.
Flower Garden
Finish lifting and drying summer-flowering bulbs for storage. Finish planting al spring bulbs by the end of the month, except tulips, best planted in November. Dig up lilies for moving and propagation, and replant immediately. Buy container grown perennials, keep in the cold frame, and divide or take cuttings next Spring.
Kitchen Garden
Start digging spare ground on heavy soils, leaving the surface rough and exposed to frost. Cover remaining self-blanching celery with fleece, or tuck straw between plants. Plant garlic cloves in a prepared bed: or in pots in the cold frame if soil conditions am unsuitable. Transplant lettuces sown last month, toe cold frame or greenhouse border.
Lawns & Hedges
Continue cutting lawns if growth warrants this, with the blades set at their highest; brush off dew first on damp days.
Greenhouse
Light smoke cones under glass to kill insect pests - choose a kind that may be used while plants are in situ. Sow alpine strawberries in 180C (650F), and plant out in Spring for a full crop next year. Box up dahlia tubers in slightly moist old compost, and keep frost-free. In cold districts be prepared to insulate greenhouses and cover frames. If grapes are still ripening, remove some leaves to admit sunlight, keep the air dry and provide heat for late varieties. Isolate diseased plants undergoing treatment to avoid infection. Plant freesias in pots for flowers to cut in spring.
Water Garden
Protect tender marginals such as gunnera with a mulch of bark or leaves, held down with netting. Thin out oxygenating plants, and add to the compost heap.
In General
Tree seeds have limited viability - sow fresh in pots outdoors and expose to frost

BREATH EASY AT SALT LIFE THERAPY CORK. An astounding number of irish people are affected by respiratory ailments of some kind. From an annoying ‘bunged up’ nose to painful sinuses, to asthma and those who live with the discomfort of constant coughing will tell you they are sick of it.
A 100% NATURAL WAY TO FIND LONGTERM RELIEF. Dry Salt Therapy is a drug-free way to relieve the discomfort, help treat the symptoms of a huge variety of complaints relating to the respiratory system, and finally giving sufferers some much needed relief.
HOW DOES DRY SALT THERAPY WORK,
EXACTLY? As a result of the low humidity, the microscopic dry salt particles can be breathed deep within the body, to the most hidden part of your sinuses and the remotest parts of the airways to the tiny alveoli in the lungs. The particles actively decrease infection inside the airway, regulating inflammation and alleviating irritation. Repeated sessions lead to long lasting improvement using a 100% natural drug free method, it is suitable for infants, children and adults. Many people with a respiratory ailment are prescribed an inhaler, usually a steroid to help calm inflammation, but only 20-25% of the drug can get into your airways, the remainder deposits into the mouth and throat, Dry Salt Therapy will effectively treat the whole respiratory system. SALT THERAPY can help everyone as it can be used as a complimentary treatment to prescribed medication-in fact it will increase the efficacy of medications or on its own.
SALT THERAPY CAN HELP ALLEVIATE SYMPTOMS OF THE FOLLOWING AILMENT; ASTHMA CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE CONSTANT DRY COUGH SHORTNESS OF BREATH BRONCHITIS SINUS PROBLEMS HAY FEVER AND EAR INFECTIONS. SESSIONS ARE 1 HOUR LONG and all you have to do is breath . Glanmire clinic; salt life therapy hazelwood centre, glanmire. Tel: 021 482 0587 Grange Clinic; Salt Life Therapy, Grange Road. TESTOMONIALS We started coming in September 2012 after my 3yrs boy had yet another course of steroids. We decided we needed to find something to help us get through the winter without having a path worn to the GP, so we had a few sessions in the salt clinic and we havent looked back since..we have found that we have been able to cut our use of ventolin by nearly 80-90% ..made my little boy very happy, I cannot put this improvement down to anything else but the SALT THERAPY CLINIC. ANN My mum suffered from continuous chest infections and is asthmatic, since attending at the salt therapy clinic in Grange, she has benefited enormously in that she takes less steroids and has not been prone to chest infections as before, she finds it immensely relaxing and the staff are so helpful and encouraging JENNIFER I spent months suffering with my sinuses, I tried antibiotics, steroids and antihistamins, I tried different diets and got no major relief, after even the first session of SALT THERAPY it made a difference, I have just completed 10 sessions and pressure pain has completely liftted in my sinuses SARA

morning for penny dinners. Pastoral Church Hall. Thought for today “In the end its not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years” With energy prices increasing for the third October in a row, households are now facing into a winter of the highest every energy bills. An average household will now need to pay 2,177 euro a year for electricity and gas, an increase of 27% in just two years. More customers search for a better deal during January and February than at any other time of the year, especially after receiving big winter bills. It is not always the right option to change suppliers. 1 in 7 households changed for a better deal in the last 12 months. Better deals do not always require changing supplier; you can get better rates by switching tariffs with their existing company. With those increases and a budget on the way, which we are being told is a demanding one, the prospect of many poor and elderly families not being able to heat their homes is very worrying. The trip to Dublin to the musical Heart Beat of Home and our visit to Glasnevin Cemetery was enjoyed by all. We will certainly pay a return visit to Glasnevin as we only got to see a fraction of it. It is so well maintained. Everyone is welcome to the Concert Hall in the City Hall on Tuesday the 9th at 7 pm to support your team in the Inter-generational Quiz. 40 teams have signed up for this very unique event where communities, schools and colleges come together all vying to lift the Evening Echo “Echo Boy” perpetual trophy and become Inter-generational Quiz champions for 2013. We have teams from city and county including Carraig Na Bhfear, Cobh, Killeagh, Blackrock, Glen, etc. Come out and have a fun night free of charge.
The oldest person in West Douglas, Frank Downey, has gone to his heavenly home. Frank was almost like the local historian, anyone that wanted a photograph or local information they would call to Frank. His knowledge and wisdom his authority on everything was amazing. He spent his entire working life in St. Patrick’s mills. Frank was a kind and good natured man. There was many a baby kept warm and cosy in the lovely blanket presents “that were made in the mills”. The quote from Father Liam is very true, “Douglas is a man down”. We send our deepest sympathy to Frank’s family. We also offer our deepest sympathy to the Hurley family on the passing of their beloved mother Nora. Also to Leo Foran on the passing of his brother, and John Dwyer on the passing of his brother, may they rest in peace.

Looking For A Change?
After just returning from our exclusive Sebastian Training day, learning upcoming trends from Sebastian’s Senior Artistic Team, over from London, we at Artisan are full of ideas, and can’t wait to share all these new styles with our fab clients!! Here is a before and after shot from Robyn’s recent appointment.
Robyn, who was looking for a change, liked her length but found she has no shape or style to her hair. After an in-depth consultation, we decided to take a few inches off the length, and added some textured and choppy layers, giving Robyn the funky look she desired. These layers compliment Robyn’s face shape, hair type, and active lifestyle. For styling, we used Sebastian’s Liquid Gloss, for intense shine, and then Sebastian’s Microweb Fiber, for texture and definition, showing off Robyn’s new style!! So if you’re looking for a change, or would like to talk about upcoming trends for the new season, phone me on 021-4895455, or pop in to either of our fab Douglas salons for a free consultation! - Audrey

THE HEIGHT OF COMPETITIONS The Heights Hotel Killarney wanted to stand out of the crowd and with the What’s Your Height competition that has been running for the last few weeks, that is exactly what they have done. The advertising campaign has had a phenomenal response with over 500 responses ranging from all different counties in Ireland and even spanning across to Germany, Canada and the USA, one person even entered from Australia… it has been a huge success. The concept of getting as many people involved through this competition has really created a buzz around Killarney and Kerry, people have been talking about this for weeks. The fact that The Heights Hotel Killarney wanted to partner with a group of local businesses to show their support has had a resounding effect on business relationships. Due to the high profile of the advertising campaign and the high calibre of the prizes offered by the partners which were Killarney High Ropes, Kerry Outdoor Sports and Rocky Mountain Restaurant, there will be some very lucky winners.
Actual Entries on Hospital Charts “She is numb from her toes down.”
“ I cannot believe the response that we have received from everyone, I have been overwhelmed with the support and comments that people have made, not only for the What’s Your Height campaign but also for The Heights Hotel Killarney. This advertising campaign was introduced to launch our new website and brochure and I wanted to do something that had never been done before but also support local businesses at the same time. I have had an amazing time reading some of the entries, over 500 of them, there have been some absolute crackers and the fact that everyone is related to height in some shape or form, and that really came through with the entries. Once again I just want to thank everyone who entered whether it was by post, Facebook or through the hotel, your support is greatly appreciated. The message going forward – when you think of height – think of The Heights Hotel Killarney” Neil Buckley – Sales & Marketing Manager of The Heights Hotel Killarney

This week I would like to talk about colour, how it works and affects us. The recently departed Celtic tiger devoured our national obsession with all things magnolia, thank goodness. As we became more adventurous and willing to expand our pallets we moved towards cream and off whites. I mentioned last time the current trend is in the gray spectrum for neutrals. Trends in interior colour are very influenced by fashion, so what you see in fashion magazines this year will be on the cover of the more contemporary interior magazines just as quickly. A brief guide for you. NEUTRAL COLOURS White an obvious neutral (stay away from the yellow hues) and the current darling of neutrals GRAY. Neutrals keeps things sharp, clean, un-fussy. Flexible as you can add colour through accessories and feature walls. When you tire of the scheme it’s easy to change by changing accent colours. RED A strong colour, great as an accent colour
ISSUE #939- 940
in living rooms, kitchens and dining rooms. Red will close in a space which is why it is often used in conjunction with soft lighting for a cozy dining experience.
kitchen cabinets (The Paint Store can advise you on painting kitchens, furniture etc) Lime green is good for adding zest to a neutral kitchen scheme.
YELLOW Yellow needless to say is bright and associated with happiness. I have used strong sun flower yellows in many a guest wc, not for everyone but it makes me smile. Good also in kitchens, very on trend currently and many kitchen appliances kettles, toasters can be found in yellow.
PURPLE ‘ah, purple’ one of my favorites. Think opulence, luxury and extravagant. Purple is a fantastic accent colour for bedrooms and living rooms. Shops are bursting with variations of purple accessories. Dulux’s film noir is very popular for feature wall in living rooms and bedrooms. Team with gold, silver, glass for that maximum luxury, cozy feel. The Paint store are experts at matching colour, so if you have bed linen or say wallpaper that you want to use in a scheme we can match that for you. I am in store every Tuesday and Thursday so book a FREE consultation and open your mind to colour.
BLUE A calming and relaxing colour, it can sometimes be cold. Try green with it in living rooms (yes, blue and green can be seen). Blue in bathrooms is also very fresh against the white bathroom fixtures. GREEN Relaxing and restful, can be used anywhere in the home. Green is especially good in bedrooms. Currently enjoying a moment with people painting existing wooden

Migraine
Migraines are chronic headaches that can cause significant pain for hours or even days. Symptoms can be so severe that all you can think about is finding a dark, quiet place to lie down. Some migraines are preceded or accompanied by sensory warning symptoms or signs (auras), such as flashes of light, blind spots or tingling in your arm or leg. A migraine is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound.
Symptoms
Migraines usually begin in childhood, adolescence or early adulthood. A typical migraine attack produces some or all of these signs and symptoms: Moderate to severe pain, which may be confined to one side of the head or may affect both sides Head pain with a pulsating or throbbing quality Pain that worsens with physical activity Pain that interferes with your regular activities Nausea with or without vomiting Sensitivity to light and sound When untreated, a migraine typically lasts from four to 72 hours, but the frequency with which headaches occur varies from person to person.
Causes
Although much about the cause of migraines isn’t
PAGE 20
Thursday 03.10.2013
understood, genetics and environmental factors seem to both play a role. Migraines may be caused by changes in the trigeminal nerve, a major pain pathway. Imbalances in brain chemicals, including serotonin — which helps regulate pain in your nervous system — also may be involved. Serotonin levels drop during migraines. This may trigger your trigeminal system to release substances called neuropeptides, which travel to your brain’s outer covering (meninges). The result is headache pain.
Treatment
A variety of drugs have been specifically designed to treat migraines. In addition, some drugs commonly used to treat other conditions also may help relieve or prevent migraines. Medications used to combat migraines fall into two broad categories: Pain-relieving medications and Preventive medications.
riboflavin (vitamin B-2) also may prevent migraines by correcting tiny deficiencies in the brain cells. Coenzyme Q10 supplements may be helpful in some individuals. Oral magnesium sulfate supplements may reduce the frequency of headaches in some people, although studies don’t all agree on this
issue. Whether or not you take preventive medications, you may benefit from lifestyle changes that can help reduce the number and severity of migraines. One or more of these suggestions may be helpful for you: Avoid triggers, Exercise regularly and Reduce the effects of estrogen. For

Glasnevin Cemetery 1832 Experience The Unforgettable By Denis Coffey
I remember with clarity my first visit to Glasnevin cemetery Dublin, it was August 1985. Over the years I have enhanced my knowledge of individuals buried in Glasnevin, foremost Ireland’s Liberator Daniel O Connell, who established Glasnevin cemetery in 1832, as a place where people of all religions could bury their dead with dignity. From a modest beginining Glasnevin is now Ireland’s largest cemetery spanning over one hunded and forty acres. Daniel O Connell was born in Cahersiveen Co. Kerry in 1775, he was educated in France. In 1832 he founded the Catholic association, he won a seat in Parliament at Westminister London but could not enter as Catholics were not permitted to serve there. In 1829 he propposed the Catholic emancipation bill, awarding Catholic people civil rights, such as religious freedom, education and property ownership. In 1841 O Connnell was elected the first Catholic Lord Mayor of Dublin. During a pilgrimage to Rome on May 15th 1847, O Connell died. His wish was to have his heart sent to Rome, and his body buried in Glasnevin. His heart dissappeared on its journey to Rome, but his body was placed in an impressive crypt beneath the round tower inside the gates of Glasnevin cemetery. He will always be remembered as a man of the people. Charles Stewart Parnell MP for Meath, he founded the national land league, and became President of the Irish Parliamentery party and worked towards Home Rule, he died in 1891 and was buried in Glasnevin, marking his grave is a huge stone from his native Co. Wicklow. His greateness and his deeds shall never be forgotten. Michael Collins 1890-1922, his grave is the most visited in Glasnevin with fresh flowers being placed everyday. Veronique Crombe for a long time was called the mysterious french woman, who has paid for the display of fresh flowers on Collins grave for the past thirteen years. A commemoration takes place evey year since 1923 at Beal na mBlath, Co. Cork, marking the death of the irish patriot who died on August the 22nd 1922. Collins played a pivolat role towards irish freedom. Eamon de Valera 1882- 1975. Eamon was born in New York City in the 14th of October 1882, he was reared by his mothers family near the village of Bruree Co. Limerick. After the death of his father he first went to school in Bruree and later to Christian Brothers secondary school in Charleville Co Cork. He moved to Dublin and went to college in Blackrock, later he became a mathematics teacher at Rockwell college Co. Tipperary. He joined the Gaelic League and later married Sinéad Flanagan on the 9th of January 1910. Eamon was a commanader in the 1916 Easter Insurrection. In 1919 he was appointed President of Dáil Eireann forming a new part Fianna Fail on the 16th of May 1926, he became Taoiseach in February 1932 and ultimately President of Ireland on the 25th of June 1959. Eamon de Valera died in 1975 and was buried in Glasnevin cemetery. His contribution towards irish freedom and its people cannot be overstated. Other monumental figures are too numerous to mention in this short story for now. Anyone who visits Glasnevin cemetery will be left with a lasting impression of its magnificence and beauty from traditional Celtic Cross and historic headstones a visit to Glasnevin museum, the tower cafe and if your lucky to meet tour guide Bridget Sheerin from the start of the tour you will recoginse her abilty to paint a meaningful picture with great enthusiasm. Bridget will do her upmost in verifying the facts for you. My apprecitation to Bridget for her help on our last visit to Glasnevin in August of this year. It’s an exquisite and historical cemetery, well worth a visit any time.
Government commitment to UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Previous Fianna Fáil government failed to submit 3rd progress report in 2009 Fine Gael Cork South Central TD and Chairperson of the Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children, Jerry Buttimer, has welcomed the confirmation by Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Frances Fitzgerald TD, that Ireland has today (Thurday) submitted the State’s Consolidated Third and Fourth Reports to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child. “This consolidated report outlines the most significant developments for children and young people and how Ireland has been implementing the main aims of the UN Convention during the period 2006 to 2011 inclusive. It demonstrates the progress that has been made in giving effect to the rights of children since the appointment of a full cabinet minister with specific responsibility for children and youth affairs. “Ireland ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1992. In 1996 and in 2006 the first and second reports were submitted. However a third progress report was due to be submitted in 2009, but regrettably this did not happen. This failure by the previous Fianna Fáil government let it fall to this Government, and in particular to Minister Fitzgerald, to restore Ireland’s international standing and commitment to children’s rights. “This decision by Cabinet to approve and submit this report is a positive step in demonstrating to the international community that, once again, Ireland is committed to the rights of Children. Some of the practical examples of this commitment, which shows that this Government acted where the previous Government failed, include: Successfully delivering the long-awaited Children’s Referendum; Establishing a dedicated Child & Family Agency; and Ending the detention of children in St. Patrick’s Institution. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child set out the fundamental rights and principles which should underpin all policy decisions. It recognises the primacy of parents and families in caring, nurturing and educating children. The core articles, from which the other rights arise, are those ensuring that access to the rights guaranteed is afforded to all children without discrimination and that the best interests of the child must be the primary consideration in all actions concerning children. We have a duty to ensure that all children are afforded access to these fundamental rights and the approval of the latest report shows that we are continuing to make progress in this regard.”

Love Where You Live Awards 2013 for Carraig Liath
The Respond! Carraig Liath estate has been commended from “Midleton Tidy Towns” “Love Where You Live Awards 2013″ for the Participant- Best public service premises in the upkeep of the estate and community building. This was the only social housing estate in Midleton to get an award on the night. Carraig Liath is an integrated estate with Respond! and Town Council residents. The residents and enhancement committees came together over the last five years. These volunteers, with the support of the Respond! Residents Support Worker Helena Crotty, created flower tubs, flowerbeds, and hanging baskets. A weekly rota of ‘litter-picking day’ also includes some of the children on the estate. This is headed-up by resident Joan McDermott who has done great work getting people involved on the estate. Joan involved the children with planting flowers and litter picking which have proved to be very positive. Discussions regarding the environment and plants has raised everyones interest in doing more on their estate. A number of residents have been in involved in keeping their gardens looking well and helping with the committees. Receiving the award has given the Carraig Liath estate and

PARISH PILGRIMAGE
On Sunday last a coach load of pilgrims from Carrigaline travelled to the St Finbarr’s Day Mass and ceremonies in Gougane Barra. The group recited the rosary and sang hymns en route. For some it was their first time at the ceremonies in Gougane. Crowds gathered for the occasion; many arrived on foot having travelled over the mountains and hills on foot from Kilgarvan, Kilnamartyra, Kealkil and Drimoleague. Others came by numerous coaches and cars. The ceremony opened with the Rosary recited bilingually followed by a procession led by the Ballingeary Pipe Band playing hymns, which added to the atmosphere of the occasion. Bishop John Buckley who concelebrated the Mass with Archbishop Dermot Clifford and priests of the Diocese welcomed the large gathering. The mass was celebrated on the altar at the entrance to the crowded Oratory. The vast majority of the pilgrims sat on seats provided, brought their own seats or stood in the adjoining grounds. Archbishop Dermot Clifford, Cashel & Emily, gave the homily. It was a very moving ceremony with pilgrims coming away feeling the peace
and calm of the place and the event.

Historical Walking Tour of Ballintemple Saturday 12 October 2013 Cllr Kieran McCarthy Cllr Kieran McCarthy new historical walking tour of Ballintemple takes place (Saturday, 12 October, 2pm, meet at Ballintemple graveyard, opp. O’Connor’s Funeral Home, Boreenmanna Road, two hours, free). It forms part of a set of ten tours that he has developed in this side of the city. Ballintemple as a settlement hub is one of the earliest in the city that came into being. Urban legend and writers such as Samuel Lewis in 1837 describe how the Knight’s Templar had a church here, the first parish church of Blackrock: “At the village of Ballintemple, situated on this peninsula, the Knight’s Templars erected a large and handsome church in 1392, which, after the dissolution of that order, was granted, with its possessions, to Gill abbey. At what period it fell into decay is uncertain; the burial ground is still used”. The graveyard is impressive in its collection of eighteenth century and nineteenth century headstones. It has a series of low uninscribed gravemarkers in its south east corner. There are also many inscribed headstones with smiling faces with one inscribed with Remember Death. The graveyard remains an undiscovered corner of the city with much of its family histories unresearched and unpublished. There is also much to discover within a short space in Ballintemple and its role in the wider city as an architectural conservation area. Various architectural styles can be noted Norman, Gothic, Renaissance, Georgian, Victorian, Italianiate, French, and Oriental. The houses can boast such architects such as Bro Michael Riordan, Sir John Benson, Deanes, Morrisons, Richard Brash, Hargraves, Walkers and the Hills. The architectural DNA comprises local stone, sand, brick, slates from Killaloe, Rosscarbery and Wales, timber from Canada and Scandinavia, cement from Portland in England and ironwork for railings obtained from Scottish foundries. http://www.corkheritage.ie/ http://www.kieranmccarthy.ie/ Kieran’ heritage on facebook: Cork: Our City, Our Town

CHICKEN & MUSHROOM VOL EU VENTS
Salt Life Therapy of Elmwood Lodge in Frankfield (021 436 0060) provide an extraordinarily natural relief to sufferers of upper and lower respiratory ailments -from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease to sinus issues- from a particularly successful base established at the Hazelwood Centre in Glanmire town centre. Testimonials achieved at both Glanmire and Grange lend themselves easily to the conclusion that completely drug free relief is available to those who review their respiratory treatments and benefit from a proven and actually far healthier treatment that reduces the use of steroids and inhalers which have inherent dependencies and side-effects at their heart. Salt life therapy can provide up to an 80% reduction in the use of steroids and inhalers. Due to demand, salt life therapy has introduced a yearly unlimited membership for those with chronic and long term respiratory problems. Says Geraldine Healy of Salt Life Therapies, “the numbers of customers who return suggests that people find it invaluable in maintaining their respiratory health and this gives them back a big quality of life.” Typically, people who attend Salt Life Therapies will attend two to three times a week over a three week period and quite often people will notice an improvement even after the first session. Depending upon the condition for which relief is sought a schedule will take anywhere between five and twenty sessions for a life enhancing improvement to take place. Labour TD Ciarán Lynch has welcomed news that Nemo GAA Club is to receive an energy upgrade as part of a major investment package announced by the Minister for Communications, Pat Rabbitte, today. “This upgrade will save Nemo up to approximately €2,000 a year, which can be used for club development purposes. “This initiative is part of a suite of 80 new community projects announced by Minister Rabbitte on Friday, in line with the Better Energy scheme. Overall, it will see 3,500 homes and 290 community buildings provided with energy efficiency upgrades nationwide. Deputy Lynch said: “This is fantastic news for Nemo and the local community. At a time when all local clubs are stretched for funding, this scheme will mean that money ordinarily spent on energy bills and costs can now be re-directed into club development and used directly on sporting activities. “This scheme is being rolled out in co-operation with Musgrave, its retail partners SuperValu and Centra, and the GAA. Musgrave deserve credit for selecting Nemo to be one of only 22 local clubs nationwide who will participate in this scheme. “This scheme is part of a range of similar initiatives overseen by Labour Minister Pat Rabbitte at community level to support practical energy efficiency upgrades. These schemes will make the properties buildings and facilities warmer, more comfortable, and less costly to run. This benefits householders, consumers and the environment.” Ciarán Lynch TD Constituency Office 29 St. Patrick’s Mills

U14 National Cup Avondale 3 Tramore Ath 3 Tramore’s division 1 side bowed out of the National cup after a cracker at Bessboro. After a cracking even opening half Avondale took the lead with a free kick in stoppage time. The half time chat worked wonders and Tramore completely out played their hosts for the next twenty minutes. Ben Healy equalised 3 minutes in and the same player converted a spot kick 4 minutes later after Ronan Dalton was felled in the box. When Andrew O’Connell scored a third with 14 to go it looked like Tramore for the next round, but credit to Avondale they kept battling and scored twice late on. Extra time couldn’t decide the issue so it was on to penalties where Avondale prevailed 5-4. Gavin Burke and Ben Healy were best for Tramore Tramore Ath ‘A’ 0 Coachford Killinardish 7 Tramore were always up against it in this one but kept battling to the end. Matthew Quigley and Loughlin McGrath were best for Tramore.

Olympic medallist Sonia O’Sullivan will attend on the first evening to show her support of the programme. When commenting about this initiative Sonia said: “I think this is a great idea and will be a good starting point for many young people, I am delighted to be able to endorse it personally on the 16th and hope that schools will promote it among their students to ensure that the programme continues after the initial six weeks.”. The participants will be led by qualified coaches throughout the six weeks and will be go through the basics of athletics training as well as warming up and cooling down correctly.
