South Link

Thursday, 4th September 2008

the word by George Thompson

I was travelling to town last Saturday and while stopped at the traffic lights at the junction of Boreenamanna Road and the South link I saw one of the most frightening manoeuvres on the road that I’ve witnessed in a long time, as four ‘boy racers’ in modified cars raced each other from the City toward Kinsale Road. One in particular in a black Honda Civic went through the junction doing at least 80 mph – in traffic – while he and his front seat passenger laughed their heads off - all this within earshot of Anglesea Street Garda HQ. This particular section of the South Link is a 30mph zone. I am not coming down on young drivers, as I have in the past been critical of older and experienced as well as younger drivers, but these guys on Saturday should have had their cars impounded, had they been nicked. If one of these had lost control, the outcome would have been catastrophic. There are a lot of young drivers out there with modified motors which cost a small mortgage and these drivers show huge pride in their investments while driving responsibly, but just like in every aspect of life, there are a small few who give a bad name to all. * * * Well done to all who supported the Simon Connolly Garden Party Fundraiser held at the home of Con O’Donovan in Kilmurray near Lissarda last weekend. Many celebrities showed up lending to the success of this worthy cause and event. * * * Congratulations to all those kids who started school this week and last week and indeed to all students who returned to school, many of whom will be heading into Junior and Leaving cert. Hopefully next summer will bring better weather!

letters Cork City - ‘We Will Survive’

to the editor

We’d love to hear from you. If you have any news, views or issues you’d like to see covered, write to the Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas West, Cork or by e-mail to frontdesk@douglaspost.ie Please include your name and address and a contact number. Letters may be edited due to space considerations.

A Rebuff. A Chara,

I wish to reply to a letter in your magazine on the 14th August about the I.R.B. In that letter Con O’Mahony belittled Liam Tobin as a disgruntled officer. Liam Tobin was the greatest freedom fighter next to Michael Collins, and he was a first class Officer. The whole letter was designed to blacken the name of Fine Gael by implying that an ancient organisation called the I.R.B. was still in existence working in an underhand way. The author of the letter is well known for singing rebel songs about Che Guevara and Fidel Castro, the Communist Dictator of Cuba. The letter was laid out in a way to conjure up black political propaganda. I hope your magazine doesn’t give any further coverage to a man with a political agenda which is only acceptable in a country like Cuba. Is mise le meas, Gearoid O’Curra

Dear Sir,

I would appreciate if you could put a piece in your paper about the Cork City Football Club v Derry City game on Friday night. The kick off is at 7.45pm. I am pleading with the people of this City and County, to come along to our game on Friday night to help to keep League of Ireland soccer in Cork. Our Club is such a community based Club and I, as Liaison Officer, work very closely with the Community Garda, also schools, Youth Clubs, Schoolboys and girls Soccer Clubs and the many associations in our city. The players have been to many schools, soccer camps, presentations of trophies, and are a great bunch of guys; not forgetting the gesture the management, players, and backroom staff, made during the week to take a cut in their wages to keep our club afloat. Well done to everyone, as Gloria Gaynor sang “We will survive”, but we can’t do it without help from everyone. A raffle will take place at halftime for two tickets to the Ireland v Cyprus game on the 15th October, (sponsored by the F.A.I.) Tickets are €2 each. Yours in sport, Noelle Feeney

Cork City Football Club Dear Editor,

As widely reported of late, Cork City football club are currently in the midst of financial turmoil. When the club were taken over last year, all supporters of the club were lured into false promises, whereby not only was the clubs health, to be maintained over the coming years, but a steady progress on all fronts were to be made. Promises of large financial injections were made, a new multi-purpose stadium built within this fine City was another. Sadly, as things have panned put, not only were we subjected with lie upon lie, but now we are currently in the situation where if money is not quickly invested into the club, Cork, plain and simply, won’t have a football team on a national front. A quite depressing fact, given the size of our city. Too often through the media, we are told the tale that the Cork sporting public are up there with the best. Massive numbers attending all-Ireland finals and the ever-merry bandwaggon of the Munster brigade sadly lull the general public into the collective misunderstanding that the people of Cork are untouchable when it comes to supporting its teams. It’s a delusion, backed up the mere fact that the cities football club struggles to get more than 4,000 people regularly every couple of weeks. Not only is it a sad reflection on the fickleness of our people, but it’s also quite shameful that given the sheer and expanding population of Cork, the numbers attending live matches week in, week out is paltry. Football, and sport in general, was never bred on success. It’s about being there, immersing yourself in it, escaping from the routine mundanity, and having something to shout about. I’m sure I can speak on behalf of all Cork City fans when I say that we’d take 10 years of winning nothing, to ensure our club is there for another year. Here’s hoping the sporting public of Cork actually live up to the tag of great supporters at some stage in the future. If not, it will lose one of its teams for good.

Start September with a Splash ! Aura Cobh Leisure Centre is delighted to launch the Aura Swim Academy this September, which will run swimming lessons throughout the year for children of all levels and abilities. The Aura Swim Academy concentrates on building children’s confidence in the water through a programme of gradual progression and motivation while also encouraging them to have fun and enjoy their time in the water. All of Aura’s instructors are fully trained under the new code of ethics for children’s sports and are always on hand to ensure that each child receives the highest level of instruction and supervision at all times. The Aura Swim Academy also guarantees a low child / teacher ratio so that each child receives the best coaching and care throughout each lesson. Unlike other swimming lessons, Aura also has a designated on-site swim coordinator, Karen O’Keeffe, who will be on hand to answer any questions or queries you may have during your child’s lessons. ‘Aura has earned a strong reputation for providing the finest swim instruction in Ireland.’

said Shinead Griffin, Operations Manager of the Cobh Leisure Centre. ‘Our lessons aim to build children’s confidence in the water. The Aura Swim Academy creates a bright and positive learning environment, teaching children not only how to swim but also helps them develop an understanding of the water.’ ‘Unlike other swim schools, Aura Cobh has no waiting lists so children can start learning to swim with us today.’ ‘We want kids to really enjoy their time in the pool and as a result gain greater confidence in the water. Our motto here in Aura is swim with us, swim for life!’ said Ms. Griffin. The Aura swim Academy will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3.30pm–5.15pm and Saturdays from 10am–2pm. A course of 10 week lessons costs €69 with a 10pc discount available to families with more than one child taking part. Aura Swim Academy also offers four private lessons, in addition to the 10 week programme, for children who may initially struggle at their level. This offer is exclusively for children in the Aura Swim Academy and must be deemed necessary by the relevant swim instructor. The four additional private lessons will cost just €40. Aura Cobh Leisure Centre is also happy to introduce lane swimming every Saturday

morning from 9am. Lane swimming is aimed at building up speed and endurance while preparing swimmers to race at a competitive level. New parent and toddler swimming classes will also take place at Aura Cobh on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 9.30am. These classes run for 25 minutes for a 15 week period at a cost of €75. ‘Swimming with your baby can be an extremely enjoyable and relaxing experience. These lessons focus on introducing your child to the water and help you to teach them new skills, from wetting their faces to floating unaided.’ ‘Gentle pool exercise is also especially suited to new mothers, helping to improve muscle tone, help joint mobility and increase stamina,’ said Ms. Griffin. Aura has a host of other facilities for the whole family to enjoy this September, including a state-of-the-art gym, sauna & steam room, fitness classes and special children’s camps. All of Aura’s state-of-the-art facilities, classes and activities can be used by both members and pay-as-you-go customers. For further information on Aura Swim Academy and any of the other classes or facilities available, please contact the swimming co-coordinator Karen O’Keeffe on 021 420 1696 or email cobhswimlessons@auragroup.ie

James Sexton opens new Education Centre in Bishopstown.

Deirdre Clune T.D.

Kip McGrath is an international education company which tutors children between the ages of 6 and 16 in English and Mathematics. The company which has been helping children all over the world has recently set up in Cork. Established 27 years ago in Australia, there are currently over 600 Kip McGrath Education Centres worldwide. The systems and methods used have been adapted to meet the needs of the Irish curriculum. Other centres successfully operate in Dublin, Galway, Kerry and Waterford. The Kip McGrath Centre at Unit 2, Ardrostig, Bishopstown is owned and operated by James Sexton, a fully qualified teacher with 15 years experience in the teaching profession. The modern and spacious Centre is conveniently located opposite the entrance to Dunnes Stores, Bishopstown Court – to the rear of Bishopstown Autos Ltd. James was educated at Colaiste an Spioraid Naoimh, Bishopstown and holds a B.A. degree and Higher Diploma in Education from University College Cork. The Centre provides after school tuition for primary and secondary students and specialising in English, Reading, Spelling and Mathematics. It is a unique learning environment where students are taught in small groups of no more than five so that they can receive individual attention. A wide variety of students attend the Centre. It caters for children who are having difficulty with their schoolwork or have fallen behind as well as children who would like to be challenged further. Students are offered a free assessment and individual programmes of study are devised focusing on the specific needs of each student. They are guided through their work by experienced and fully qualified teachers. James commented, “Kip McGrath Centres exist to support school programmes in core skills. The aim is to improve students’ overall performance in the key skills of English and Mathematics and to build pupils’ self confidence along the way.” During school terms classes run from 3.00 p.m to 7.20 p.m on Monday to Friday and on Saturday mornings. For more information about the Cork Centre or to discuss your child’s educational needs, please contact James Sexton on 021 - 48677765 or 0894170645, visit the website www.kipmcgrath.com or email seamusoseasnain@hotmail.com

Crosshaven National School’s Walking Bus an initiative that could be repeated across Cork

The initiative taken by the Crosshaven Parents’ Association to, with the help of Cork County Council and Scoil Bhride; establish a “walking bus” for local primary school children is a very welcome development that could be repeated throughout Cork if it is successful. The Crosshaven Parents’ Association has shown great vision in its attempts to establish a “walking bus” for their local school. The benefits for the environment and for traffic congestion cannot be underestimated. The walking bus would reduce the number of cars dropping and collecting children from school and result in less traffic at the school. I would also like to commend Cork County Council for their commitment to support the initiative by providing the local infrastructure required for it to succeed. A ‘walking bus’ is a group of school children who walk to and from school, supervised by parents & volunteers. A walking bus should consist of at least two adults including a ‘driver’ at the front and a ‘conductor’ at the rear and follows a set route each morning and evening, with agreed pick up and drop off points.

Deirdre Clune TD

If the walking bus initiative can succeed in Crosshaven then it could be repeated in Carrigaline, Douglas, Bishopstown and beyond. If local parents’ associations were interested in following in the footsteps of the Crosshaven Parents’ Association and if their local schools and Council were willing to support the initiative then the benefits expected in Crosshaven could be repeated throughout Cork.

Douglas Writers Group Barry’s of Douglas Competition

with Ronnie McGinn Recently, Arizona’s, Collette F. Walters’s and her granddaughter Ashley visited Ireland for a Graduation Present and Ashley and her family travelled over 800 miles around Ireland, taking in the scenes, even in the rain! They had a wonderful trip before returning to the States. They were staying with Tom Hennessy in Rathangan, Co, Kildare and while there, picked up a copy of The Douglas Post and were attracted to the Poetry Corner, as Collette’s brother has written numerous beautiful poems, while reading his book of poems, Ashley asked him if he would write a poem for her and that same night he sat down and composed and wrote this poem to her.

TO ASHLEY Ashley you’re a Yankee girl A Yankee thru’ and thru’ But don’t forget your Irish blood Because you are Irish too When you return to your native land Back to college you will go Don’t forget us here at home The ones you got to know

On Sale will be good quality second hand baby clothes, cloth nappies, Kids clothes, Toys, Baby equipment, Maternity clothes and cookbooks. La Leche League will have a bookstall and leaflets offering Breastfeeding Help and Information.”

AGE ACTION IRELAND

Have you a small repair job which you would like to have done for you? Well if so you may be interested to know that there is a programme currently being operated by the above in Douglas, Blackrock, Ballintemple, Ballinloung and Crosshaven . This project uses a pool of trustworthy volunteers and handpersons to carry out minor repairs for older people. The service is free – you only pay for the materials used (though voluntary donations are welcome). Those interested should contact Cork Care and Repair at lo call 1890 369 369

La Leche League

Whether you breastfeed your baby six days, six weeks or six months, you will find La Leche League meetings supportive and informative, La Leche League, Midleton meet on the second Wednesday of every month, the next meeting will be Wednesday 12th September at 10:30am at St John the Baptist Church Hall, Church Lane, Midleton. Mothers with their nursing babies and mothers-to-be are welcome. For more information Call Anna on 021-4668027.

REPAIR OF E.S.B. LIGHTS

Nothing annoys residents as much as lights in their estates not being repaired quickly. Many residents fear robberies etc and feel vulnerable and while the man power currently carrying out such repairs are probably doing their best, perhaps the powers that be could invest more man power in this are. Currently I have been asked to get two lights No 22 and No 31 on the N28 just beyond the Bloomfield Interchange towards Ringaskiddy back in action as they have been out for a long time. I have indeed contacted the appropriate body so lets see how quickly they respond. There are also lights out in Dun Eoin in Carrigaline there are three out of five lights out there and I am checking if it’s the responsibility of the Council or the E.S.B. In any event, what’s the point of having public lighting if they are not continuously working.

‘Walking Bus’ to School, Scoil Bhride, Crosshavan

The Parents Association of the above school have initiated this project with the support of the school and the Board of Management. I must confess when our esteemed colleague Peter Kelly (who has since departed for far away shores) mooted such a project there was a certain amount of derision at the thought. However, on mature reflection (heard that one before) such initiatives have a proven track record elsewhere and can be very helpful in alleviating traffic congestion, so its worth examining again. Of course such a project can only operate if there are footpaths and safe crossing on the route and to facilitate this particular ‘walking bus’ Cork County Council is proposing to construct footpaths from the pedestrian crossing (opposite the Church) on the Upper Road to the ramp that leads to the Middle Road. And from the ramp to top of Web’s Hill. However, the downside is that this will reduce car parking in these sections significantly. The current arrangement where cars park perpendicular to the stone wall on the Upper Road is a considerable hazard to both pedestrians and vehicles alike, therefore, if footpaths are constructed to provide a safe walkway for school children and the general public, parallel car parking would be the only option. While the council proposes to commence such work in the coming weeks, they would welcome feedback from the public in this matter before the start date. I will be happy to meet with anyone who would have queries or concerns in relation to same.

up relates to the synchronization of lights on City side of Douglas and I understand that City Council are aware of the problem and are awaiting a consultant from England in October to programme same. Its beyond me why (a) they couldn’t find someone somewhere is Ireland to do the work and (b) why we have to wait until October and the dark nights to bring this consultant over. I now a certain Airline has signaled they are pulling routes out of Cork Airport but I am sure there are plenty of direct routes into Cork that would facilitate this gentleman arrival!!! I will bring this to the attention of the City Manager during the week and also our Road Engineers. We need these lights working appropriately in tandem with all junctions before Mums and Dads nerves are frayed at peak hours. Deirdre Forde MCC. 12 Lislee Road, Maryborough, Douglas, Co. Cork. in pots in a cold frame Start clearing exhausted summer bedding plants. Prune late rambler roses by cutting out exhausted stems to ground level or a low side-shoot. Start lifting and potting up geraniums and other tender perennials. and bring under cover. Bring late-flowering chrysanthemums indoors. Kitchen Garden Continue transplanting spring cabbage wherever there is space. Plant autumn onion sets. Tie grease bands on apple and pear trees to catch migrating pests. Cut marrows and pumpkins, and ripen in the sun for a fortnight Lawns & Hedges If the lawn has suffered in summer, revive with a dressing of autumn fertiliser Greenhouse Finish planting prepared hyacinths in pots and bowls. Bring inside tender shrubs and other pot-plants stood outdoors for the summer. Water desert cacti and succulents less frequently ready for their dry winter rest. Keep an eye on the night temperatures and turn on heating if necessary Pot up ageratums; petunias (especially surfinias) and other bedding plants for colour indoors, and late cuttings. Remove all shading from the glass, if not already done. Water Garden Remove pumps and other equipment from ponds, clean and store. In General Weeds quickly set seeds now, so continue hoeing and hand weeding regularly. Lift gladioli as foliage dies down, and dry the corms for storage. Sow crevice plants in wall joints, mixing the seeds with a little clay. Sow hardy annuals in situ or in frames for early blooms next year. Take cuttings of hebes in a cold frame as an insurance against winter losses. Divide and replant winter-flowering iris unguicularis. Prune weeping standard roses by cutting back flowering shoots.

Ballinlough Community News

Doirse oscailte arís ag Gaelscoil na Dúglaise

Ballinlough I.C.A.

Ballinlough I.C.A. will open on Wednesday 3rd September at 8.00pm in the Community Centre. New members welcome.

Thosaigh 45 buachaillí is cailíní óga i nGaelscoil na Dúglaise, Gaelscoil an Athair Tadhg Ó Murchú, den chéad uair an tseachtain seo thart. Lá mór tábhachtach do na páistí óga seo maraon lena dtuismitheoirí ab ea an máirt seo caite nuair a d’oscail an scoil a doirse taréis saoire an tsamhraidh, agus ba dheachair a aimsiú cé acu a bhí níos buartha ar an lá – na daltaí óga nó a gcuid tuismitheoirí. “D’imigh gach rud thar chinn ar a gcéad lá ar scoil” dúirt an príomhoide, Niamh Ó Mhaoláin linn nuair a thugamar cuairt, an lá ceannann céanna. Bhí na tuismitheoirí ar fad bailithe lasmuigh den geata ag feithimh ar a bpáistí – iad ar fad ag caint lena chéile – agus bí idir Ghaeilge, Béarla agus neart teangacha eile le clos uathu. Cé go bhfuil an gaelscoil ársa seo lonnaithe i bhfoirgneamh breá, agus cuma an-chompordach uirthi, maraon le sár atmaisféar inti, ní mar sin a bhí cúrsaí i gcónaí. Siar in 1985 is cuimhin liom an lá ar oscail an scoil den chéad uair riamh i sean-fhoirgneamh críonna caite ag an am – mar gur chuir RTE Raidió na Gaeltachta mé chun oscailt oifigiúil na scoile a thuairisciú go beo beathach ar an aeir. Ag an am ní raibh ach thart ar scór páistí agus cúpla múinteoir, anois tá breis is 320 páiste ó naoi thír éagsúla faoi chúram ocht oide déag i dtrí rang déag sa scoil. “Tá an-neart ag na páistí uile, is cuma céard as dóibh, an Ghaeilge a fhoghlaim agus foghlaimíonn siad í go fonnmhar”, dúirt an príomh-oide. Chun breis eolais a fháil ar an scoil féach ar www.gaelscoilnaduglaise.ie

DJ Claire’s Leading the Floor

mixing up the old classics with the new but adding that funky edge that will make it really interesting.” The launch party is this Friday night 5th September and it promises to be a great night, with Jolie champagne and cocktails on offer for the ladies as well as make up artists and manicurists on hand to make them feel special. “There just isn’t anything fun out there at the moment and we wanted to really allow the girls to let their hair down,” says Claire, adding that it won’t be a boys-free zone, but simply a night tailored for the ladies, by the ladies.

The disc jockey has been an integral part of the music scene since radio began and like most cities, any night of the week in Cork you will find a variety of DJ’s producing an eclectic mix of music. Different as they all are, however, they have one thing in common – they are all men! Claire O’Dwyer, aka DJ Claire, currently DJing at The Friday Night Lick, a new club night in Club Classic, is looking to change that aspect of the music scene. She argues “there are lots of male DJ’s producing great stuff but I think that a woman can bring another element to what is a predominantly male occupation”. In the profession for the last six years, Claire has worked in various clubs around the country, learning her craft and gaining the experience necessary to play the big gigs. All her hard work paid off this summer when she was asked to support Pink at The Marquee. “That for me was the ultimate experience, supporting such a major player on the music scene but also someone I look up to as a performer and a woman”.

And for those of you thinking of trying your hand at the turntables, Claire’s advice is lots of hard work, a willingness to put in the hours and a good attitude. “It’s great to see the growing interest girls have in this industry, they’re eager to get out there and show the boys they’ve got what it takes.” Best of luck.

Her new venture, taking up residency on the top floor of Club Classic for The Friday Night Lick, is something she is excited about. “I will be playing music from 60’s to 90’s,

Douglas GAA Underage

Last Saturday was a memorable day in our Club. It was a day when we hosted our annual U-13 Hurling Tournament. Eight Teams competed this year comprising of Ballyboden (Dublin) Eire Og (Ennis) Durlus Og (Tipperary) Mungret (Limerick Midleton, St Finbarrr’s, Blackrock and ourselves. The standard of hurling was very high despite the poor weather conditions. A large crowd witnessed great skill from all teams and every game was played in a very sporting manner. The shield was won by Midleton who defeated St Finbarr’s in as very exciting game. In the plate final Durlus Og defeated Douglas despite a gallant display from the host club. A feature of this tournament was the introduction of a ‘Skills Competition’ which was expertly organised by club stalwarts Pat Harrington and Eddie Murphy .This competition was won by Padraig Nagle of Midleton. Refreshments and an endless supply of food was

Garryowen were named the proud winners of the Meteor Munster 7’s Senior Draw tournament on Saturday the 30th of August, while Cashel brought the Junior Cup back Tipp! Not to be outdone by the men, Highfield took the inaugural women’s Cup home to Cork! In the Senior Draw, Garryowen battled it out with UCC in the Grand Final, finally beating UCC 35 to 15 in what was a highly-charged and competitive on-field clash between the two Munster teams. The Women’s Final proved equally exciting, with Highfield eventually overcoming UL Bohs 27 to 14 to become the first ever winners of the Women’s Cup, and in the Juniors, Cashel put on a convincing win, defeating Cobh 22 to 0 to become the first ever Junior champions. Grangevale 2 - Glenvale 1

Grangevale marked their arrival in AUL Division 2 with a hard earned victory over Northside opponents Glenvale in Grangevale Park on Sunday morning. Glenvale started brightly and deservedly went ahead after 24 minutes when their striker, who was a handful all through the game, pounced on a defensive error and coolly slotted the ball past Gary Ahearne in the Grangevale goal. To make matters worse, last seasons top scorer Jason Martin had to be replaced 2 minutes later having injured himself in a clash with the Glenvale keeper. Debutant Colin McKeown replaced Martin on the right side of midfield with Malik Elmusbahi moving up front to partner Johnny Carroll. With 33 minutes on the clock, Grangevale equalized thanks to a wonder strike from left full Barry Twomey, Twomey picked the ball up inside his own half, took two touches before unleashing an unstoppable shot from at least 40 yards that flew into the top corner of the Glenvale net. The Vale were dealt another blow when centre half Dave Burke was unable to line out for the second half due to a hamstring injury. Peter Noonan replaced Burke at the heart of the defense where himself and Keith Troy gave a solid second half display. The second 45 minutes saw a major improvement from a Grangevale point of view and they began to dominate and push for the winner which was delivered in the 65th minute courtesy of Johnny Carrolls left foot following good work from his partner Elmusbahi and full back Dave O’Sullivan. In the end, Grangevale could have won by more having missed a few glorious chances, however, a 2-1 final score coupled with some solid performances will satisfy everyone involved.

G.A.A. FOCUS

Snippets from the Local and National Scene By Pat Harrington

All-Ireland Football Semi Final - Cork vs. Kerry

Prior to this encounter there was not much interest in the game, the general feeling was that Kerry would have too much fire power for their Cork opponents. Former Offaly manager Eugene McGee could not see Kerry beaten and projected a finishing score differential of at least 6 points. My take was that Cork would have to attack rather than attempt to contain Kerry. A funny incident occurred at Mass on Saturday night; a Kerry woman turned to me and said she hoped that Cork had picked the right team. My brother looked at me bemused. I replied “she’s one of them”. Her husband (a Corkman) just smiled. The belief was that Cork would come out fighting from the off but the Kingdom ruled the roost at midfield and their half forwards won every breaking ball. The man who has been most sinned against (according to the Kerry bible)

was caught in the act by the referee throwing a punch – once again “cheerio” to Darragh O’Shea. As so often happens 14 men work harder, and so it was with Kerry. This was followed by a bizarre incident when Aidan O’Mahony shoved his face into that of Donchadha O’Connor. It would appear also that some verbals were exchanged. The Corkman reacted by tapping O’Mahony on the face, drawing an Oscarwinning performance from the Kerryman who fell to the ground in a dramatic manner, earning O’Connor a red card. I reckon the Bishop hit me harder on the cheek the day I was confirmed. The rest was Roy of the Rovers stuff – eight points down and once again Cork made the great escape and secured a draw, assisted by the squandermania of the Kerry forwards. When the Leesiders were just a point in arrears Finbarr McCarthy of C.103 declared that it had to be Cork’s day. I heard of a bus-load of Cork “supporters” who left the arena ten minutes from time, such was their lack of faith and you can bet they weren’t the only ones. Once again by the time this goes to press the replay will have taken place.

Some Great Finishes

Dramatic finishes to match that of Cork/Kerry. The 1999 European final between Manchester United and Juventus – United scored two goals in three minutes to secure a 2 – 1 win. 1994 Offaly five points in arrears with five minutes remaining went on to win by six points.

Kilkenny vs. Galway

This under 21 hurling semi-final was a huge disappointment. History will record that the Cats won by four points; it so easily could have been fourteen points had the Kilkenny boys taken the opportunities afforded them. Galway appeared to be totally disinterested in the opening twenty minutes. I recall Cyril Farrell saying that Galway hurling is alive and well following the minors’ victory over Cork. However the Kilkenny team completely outclassed their opponents. The skill displayed by the Leinster team, and in particular that of Paddy and Richie Hogan was excellent. Joe Canning was quite on this occasion though he did score from three sideline cuts – great skill.

Waterford vs. Kilkenny

In my heart I would love to see Waterford win the all-Ireland title but my head says Kilkenny. The Déise have been improving with each game but they cannot afford to keep Dan Shanahan on the periphery as has been the case all year. Can Waterford rise to a different level? Since 1998 they have not bettered the Cats in a championship game but there has never been more than the puck of a ball between the sides. This should be a good competitive game producing a great spectacle. Next Week, Pat.

Douglas Hall AFC

The season is now well under way with all teams involved in competitive action. The Seniors qualified for the Quarter finals of the Keane Cup following a 3-1 win over Ballincollig. Declan O’Connell, Derek O’Donovan & David Hackett scored 2nd half goals after the ‘Hall were 1 down at half time. The quarter final is away to College Corinthians on Thursday at 6:30. This will be followed by a home quarter final tie v Lakewood in the Donie Forde trophy on Sunday at 10:45

AUL Jnrs

Fr Mathews Basketball

The AUL Jnrs opened their league campaign with a 6-0 away win over Lee Rangers. Next up is an away game v Greenmount on Sat at 3pm The Youths have started their season well under Evan Twomey, an earlier 5-0 win over Dunbar was followed up by a 4-3 win over Crosshaven. Goals from Des Wade, Conor Murphy, Sean Moynihan & Graham Cullinane. Next Saturday Corinthians are the visitors at 5pm in a game that will go along way to decide who will qualify from the lge cup group. The U/17’s beat Carrigaline B 8-1 in their opening game of the league cup. Stand in Manager Ron Rigby had the side ticking over in the absence of John Foley and a win over Avondale next Sunday at home at 3pm will secure qualification for the Quarter finals.

The club has started back for the season. All players should check the website for the training times. There is always room for new players in the club so if you think you could be the next Coby Bryant or Lebron James join up and play ball. Douglas Rugby Club

Under Age training for U-8’s, U-10’s and U-12’s starts again for the season in Moneygourney at 11.00am Saturday 6th September. Registration forms will be available on the day, and new members are more than welcome.

PASSAGE AFC NEW SEASON

The players of Passage AFC soccer club have been training over the last number of weeks in anticipation of the new soccer season for ‘08/’09.A very successful registration night was held back in June but there is still always room for new players and its never too late to sign up. Last season was a very successful season for the club culminating in our U11s winning their league. A number of other sides narrowly missed out on promotion, so there are very high hopes for the coming year. Due to demand this season the club has had to register a second U11 side under the watchful eye of John Daly. Having two teams at this age group just shows how much the town is expanding very

quickly. As a result of expanding membership demands are put on the resources of the club and the committee of the underage section would appeal to anyone who may be able to help in any way to please do so. Year after year there is a lot of hard work done which is a credit to all involved and an extra pair of hands or an offer of sponsorship is always very welcome. The soccer academy held on Saturday mornings is almost ready to start. Once the children are back in school a registration night will be held on Wednesday the 10th of September @ 8pm in the soccer club in Rockenham. The academy will kick off on the following Saturday morning the 13th of September. The academy is open to children boys and girls aged from 5 years old up to 9 years old. The children must be school going. The academy has been run very successfully for the last number of years but due to the large amount

of children registering more help is required. The club would ask any one with a few spare hours on Saturday morning to come along on the registration night and sign up to help us out. Again if anyone in the community would like to invest in the children of the local community and provide some

sponsorship it would be more than welcome. There is some information on the website www. passagesoccerclub.com or contact Pat @ 087 7610438

man of the match display. Liam Murray was the scorer on the night when working on match fitness was the priority.

A new season got off to a good start at the week end with a lot of our teams in action. Congratulations to our new Chairman, Brian O’Flynn, and good luck and many thanks to out going Chairman, Derry O’Callaghan who is having a well deserved break. U17’s

Tramore Ath 3 –v- Kilumney 2 Tramore got their campaign off to a winning start following this hard fought tie against spirited Kilumney. Having fallen behind to an early strike, player/coach Brian Nolan levelled the tie. Stephen Neville edged the home side in front but the visitors equalised to set up a tense finish. A superb Marc Tobin finish broke the Kilumney resistance on a day when debutant John Holland impressed for Tramore. Senior League: Keane Cup Tramore 0 –v- Ringmahon 0 Colin Hammond, Shane O’Shea and Robert O’Sullivan all played well on the day for Tramore.
