The Word
by George Thompson - Editor
Happy Easter! Congratulations to my grandson Cian who celebrated his second birthday last weekend. Don’t go overboard with the Easter Eggs and I would like to wish all our advertisers, readers, friends and colleagues a happy and safe Easter. I’m not even going to mention the Budget (don’t want to spoil your weekend any further) except to say it’s time for change! As the weekend comes upon us I would urge people to take care on our roads as many of you will travel to many destinations on this first summer bank holiday, likewise it’ll be a busy weekend for mariners as boat owners and operators take to the water, with many putting their boats in the water for the first time this season, so what better week to have a feature on Ballycotton Lifeboat than this. As we are on a nautical theme, my good friend and former navy colleague, John Leech of Irish Water Safety sent me the following and should be heeded by anyone on or near water this weekend.
BANK HOLIDAY WEEKENDS PUT MORE PEOPLE AT RISK Thousands of people will enjoy Ireland’s waterways this Bank Holiday weekend but hazards associated with Spring tides and water temperatures averaging 10 degrees Celsius will increase the risk of water related accidents and tragedies. Those boating over of the holiday weekend will share their enthusiasm with thousands more shore walkers, swimmers, divers, anglers, canoeists and surfers. Water Safety must be their foremost concern. Cold-water temperatures average ten degrees. Most swimmers will not yet be acclimatized to such conditions and should not stay too long in the water. Shore and Riverbank Walkers & Anglers Stranding is a risk to many walkers and Anglers over Easter as the larger spring tides of a full moon entice walkers further from shore at low tide. Alcohol is a contributory factor in approximately one-third of drownings, therefore alcohol should not be consumed before or during aquatic activities.
Children are fascinated and attracted to water. It is critical that adults supervise children at all times around the aquatic environment. And stay S.A.F.E. - Stay Away From Edge.
Diving Divers need to exercise caution on wreck or drift dives during this Spring tide and this needs to be highlighted in the dive plan and brief. Your Lifejacket Is Your Lifesaver Wearing a lifejacket at all times when you are engaged in aquatic related pursuits will reduce the risk of accidental drownings this weekend. It is important that everybody visiting aquatic environments this Easter ensures that their lifejackets are fully serviced. A crotch strap is an essential component of inflatable lifejackets.

Emergencies People are reminded that if you see someone in difficulty in the water dial 999 OR 112 and ask for the Coast Guard. Don’t assume someone else will make the call. Slán George Thompson Editor

Fuming Residents Dear Editor In reply to Fuming Parent last week re anti-social behaviour in Grange Erin, Shamrock Lawn and Douglas. Empty cans and bottles left after weekends in parks from the same one group of teenagers causing trouble, and neighbours have to clean up as the Council are understaffed. The Council can only come out once every two months on request. Not all teenagers are trouble, it’s just the same small group. Thanks to Deirdre Ford and Douglas Gardai who try to stop anti-social behaviour, but when they see the Gardai coming the teenagers run away. But the Gardai have reports and proof of trouble teenagers, names etc. Young parents of the trouble teenagers, open your eyes and correct them and follow them on Saturday nights, and walk through your local park and see them drinking with friends, as they are too young to drink in pubs under 18. The normal teenagers who do not bully or cause trouble join in activities and meet friends in McDonalds. In Douglas there are activities for all ages – check them out. Douglas Hall AFC, Grangevale AFC, Douglas Camogie, Douglas Bowling, music, Douglas Lawn Tennis Club, Douglas G.A.A. Douglas Community Hall – activities for all ages. In Primary and Secondary school there are activities after school that they can join. To young parents of teenagers, please correct them, follow them and see who their friends are and where they are going. It’s not easy rearing teenager’s to-day, and that’s reality. Yours Two Young Parents (of 2 teenagers aged 15 and 17 in Douglas) (Details with Editor)

find trout and eels, but not one of these fish is there today. Shelly Woods between Donnybrook and Grange also had breeding frogs at one time; those woods run from ANCO right on to Cooney’s Lane in Grange, but not a fish or frog can be found there either. Anyone who has the interest in frogs and newts (which are a protected species in Ireland) will not see them if something is not done. It’s a shame to see what little wildlife we have left in the area, and it would be great to see a little part of Douglas preserved for wildlife. Thanks for reading this letter and we will see what becomes of this. Yours Sincerely “Save 0ur Environment” Name and Address with Editor.

Doing my bit for Christina By Geraldine Blake When I lived in Hong Kong, I did voluntary work for the Christina Nobel Foundation which mostly involved manning a stall selling cards and gift items at craft fairs in various schools and hotels. One Thursday evening, in mid December, I got in from work exhausted and was looking forward to a quiet evening at home. I had just settled into a cup of tea when I received a phone call from Kim, the Fairs Co-ordinator, reminding me that I was scheduled for the 6.30pm to 8pm slot at the Marriott Hotel. Mortified, I grabbed my six year old son and then a taxi to the hotel. As soon as I arrived there Kim buzzed off. Once I had calmed down and got my bearings, the other stall holders announced that they were calling it a day and started to pack up. I didn’t get to see a single customer but I no choice other than to pack up too. I was faced with a coffin sized suitcase – thankfully on wheels, a plastic bag full of Christmas cards and several boxes of cards and candles. I abandoned the boxes and hauled the suitcase and bag to the lift lobby, down an elevator until I was on ground level. My son cantered beside me as I joined the throng of office workers as they headed, I hoped for the exit and a waiting line of taxis. The stuff was staggeringly heavy: it was like I was trying to move house all on my own. A very kind and elderly Chinese caretaker shortened his life by helping me with the suitcase and flagged down a taxi for me. Twenty minutes later, I arrived at the building that housed the Christina Noble office which was on the 6th floor. I had the telephone number of Melissa who I had been told would be waiting for me at the office. I rang her number - several times - but there was no answer. I had to do this by myself. The building had a lift but it only operated from the first floor and so sweating like pig and with muted swearing, I hauled the suitcase and then the plastic bag up the stairs. I loaded up the lift and got out at the 6th floor. I arrived up the office door but it was locked. Through the little glass pane in the door I could see that it was dark and definitely nobody was

at home. I was in a dilemma. I could just simply leave the stuff there but that didn’t sit well with my conscience and yet I was in no humour to be lugging it all home with me. I was just about to ring my husband on the mobile when suddenly the door swung open in front of me. I had been vaguely aware that my son was fiddling with the security pad on the wall beside the door but was too distracted to stop him. I whirled around and gasped, “What did you do?” He grinned triumphantly and said, “The code is 2468. Look, I’ll show you” and before I could stop him he pulled the door shut, keyed in ‘2468’ and the door swung open again. I was flabbergasted but hugely relieved because I desperately needed to use the toilet. I pulled in the wretched suitcase and bag, left a note and banging the door behind me, I ran. When I got home, I received a very apologetic phone call from Melissa who said that she had nipped out for a tea break and had her phone switched off. She paused for a beat and then adopting her most delicate tone of voice said, “Might I ask how you got in?” I told her about my son and she was shocked to learn that their office was vulnerable to burglars aged 6+. She immediately resolved to upgrade their ‘security’.

Deirdre Clune T.D Spike Island still forgotten after 5 years It is now five years since Spike Island prison was closed and since then it has been left idle and has been seemingly forgotten about. The interested Government Departments still seem to be no closer to a decision on the future of this historically significant location. As a member of the Dáil’s Public Accounts Committee I questioned senior members of the Department of Justice on the issue when they appeared as witnesses before the Committee. In response to my questions Brian Purcell, Director General of the Irish Prison Service, confirmed that as far as he is concerned there is no future for Spike Island in terms of a prison location. Mr. Purcell expressed a belief that given the historical significance of the site the suggestion that it could be developed as a tourist amenity. Mr. Purcell also confirmed that following the decision not to build a prison on Spike Island an interdepartmental committee was set up to decide Spike Island’s future. The committee includes representatives of the Departments of Community, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs; Environment, Heritage & Local Government and Arts, Sports and Tourism. The Committee has still to make a decision and I will be following the matter up with the three Ministers concerned in the Dáil. Spike Island is a historical gem in the middle of Cork Harbour. Not only is it the site of a Fort that has played a major role in the Nation’s history and is a dedicated national monument but it is also the location of a burial ground with a long history dating back to Famine days. It is hard to understand why it has become an island forgotten by the Government.

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn
Joseph Mary Plunkett (November 21, 1887 May 4, 1916) was an Irish nationalist, poet, and leader of the Easter Rising in 1916. His father, George Noble Plunkett, was a papal count and curator of the National Museum. At a young age Plunkett was stricken with tuberculosis, and spent part of his youth in the warmer climates of the Mediterranean and North Africa. He studied at the English Jesuit School at Stonyhurst in Lancashire, and acquired some military knowledge from the Officers’ Training Corps there. Throughout his life, Joseph Plunkett took an active interest in Irish heritage and the Irish language. He joined that Gaelic League, and took on as a tutor Thomas MacDonagh, with whom he formed a lifelong friendship. Sometime probably in 1915 Joseph Plunkett joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB), and soon after was sent to Germany to meet with Sir Roger Casement who was negotiating with the German government on behalf of Ireland. Plunkett successfully got a promise of a German arms shipment to coincide with the rising. Plunkett was one of the original members of the IRB Military Committee that was responsible for planning the rising, and it was largely his plan that was followed. He took his place in the General Post Office with several other of the rising’s leaders such as Patrick Pearse and Tom Clarke, though his health prevented him from being terribly active. His energetic aide de camp was Michael Collins. Following the surrender Plunkett was held in Kilmainham Jail, and faced a court martial. Hours before his execution by firing squad he was married in the prison chapel to his sweetheart Grace Gifford, whose sister had years before married his best friend Thomas MacDonagh. I see His Blood upon the Rose I see His Blood upon the rose, And in the stars the glory of His eyes. His Body gleams amid eternal snows. His tears fall from the skies.

Specifically, this multi-storey construction comprises of 11 apartments, 3 town houses, a public bar, 6 retail units, 2 medical units, 2 office units and an underground car park with 108 spaces. I attended a public meeting on this proposal recently where the general view was that any development on this site must be appropriate in scale, height and design and keep in character with existing development in the area. Clearly, it is essential that the Council also fully consider the extra traffic which this development would bring. This application has now been deemed valid by the Council and it will be processed further. The planning reference no. is 09/4852. Submissions should be sent to Cork County Council’s Planning Department quoting the reference number and enclosing the fee of €20. Submissions must be received by 22nd April and a decision is due for May 13th. I will make a submission on this application outlining some issues I feel the Council must consider fully in assessing this proposed development. If you would like to discuss this application further, or if

Advances Spinal Healthcare
Did you know that that your nervous system controls EVERYTHING in your body? And, that stress or pressure on your nervous system may be causing many of the unwanted symptoms and health conditions you experience?
In an effort to provide the best care possible for their communit community, Dr. Doug Meckelborg and Dr. Eric Tkacsik of Total Health Chiropractic Clinic recently introduced Surface Electromyography (sEMG) using the Insight Subluxation Station™ into their family wellness practice in the East Douglas Village. They are proud to be one of the few chiropractic clinics in Ireland to be equipped with this revolutionary diagnostic technology. Surface EMG is a non intrusive neuro-spinal screening system designed to detect areas of nervous system imbalance and interference. New research keeps proving the effectiveness BEFORE of chiropractic care not only for back pain, neck pain and chiropractic care headaches, but for general health and well-being. This technology is used to assist in the detection of vertebral AFTER subluxation by measuring physiological activity surrounding chiropractic care the spine. Subluxation is the term used to describe misalignment or abnormal positioning of the spinal vertebra which disturbs communication within the central nervous system. This often causes decreased human health potential and function. The Subluxation Station™ features two different, painless and non-invasive tests that help characterize and measure abnormal activity surrounding the spine due to subluxation. “Often times, subluxations do not create pain or discomfort until they have progressed to an advanced stage. Chiropractic spinal adjustments help to reduce, minimize and correct subluxations” says Dr. Eric. “The Subluxation Station™ helps me to accurately identify these problems before they become symptomatic.” As a result, your chiropractor can prepare a specific care program based on each patient’s test results. Dr. Eric received extensive hands-on training to use and interpret the results of this diagnostic screening equipment at a private facility in Colorado USA, and personally used this equipment for eight years in private practice. “As part of this post-graduate training, I was provided with scientific research that again proves having a healthy spine, free of subluxation, and an optimal functioning nervous system are essential components of optimal health and wellness.”

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives
Ballycotton Lifeboat – Saving Lives Words & Pics George Thompson/R.N.L.I. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution exists to save lives at sea providing a 24-hour search and rescue service around the Ireland and the UK and is entirely supported by voluntary contributions. The RNLI operates over 230 lifeboat stations with 43 in Ireland. The RNLI is independent of the Coast Guard and government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824 its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 137,000 lives. The RNLI is a charity registered in England, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland, while the fundraising regional office, based in Swords, covers fundraising activities for the whole of Ireland. All Lifeboats in Ireland are crewed entirely by volunteers who are ready to put to sea 24 hours a day, 365 days a year if required. Ballycotton is a picturesque fishing village with its own harbour in south-east Cork and for over 150 years as a lifeboat station the crews at Ballycotton have been presented with 19 awards for gallantry – the most recent in 2002. For another rescue in 1936, Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals were all awarded. The station responds to an average of 25 ‘Shouts’ (response calls) annually and operates a €2 million TRENT CLASS Lifeboat- 14-25 Austin Lidbury which has been in service since March 1998. Ballycotton RNLI Station Officers Lifeboat Operations Manager: Mr. John Tattan Deputy Launching Authority: Mr. Sean McGrath Deputy Launching Authority: Mr. Colm Sliney Honorary Treasurer: Mr. John Murray Honorary Medical Adviser: Dr. Eamonn Carey Station Administrator: Ms. Noreen O’Sullivan Press Officer: Ms. Bláthnaid Lane Walsh
History BALLYCOTTON LIFEBOAT STATION Station was established by the Institution in 1858 to afford protection to the shipping frequenting the port of Cork and, together with the new stations at Youghal and Ardmore (closed 1895) and others, contemplated to guard the English and Irish channels. 1826 Silver Medal was awarded to Dennis Cronen for the rescue of the master; the sole survivor of the ship Brittania that was wrecked in Ballycotton Bay on 21 December 1825. 1829 Gold Medal awarded to Lieut Lloyd and the Silver Medal to John Hennessy, who plunged through the breakers to rescue the ship’s captain who was swept off a rock when on 25 January the brig Capricho of Bilboa, was wrecked during a severe southerly gale with a heavy sea. Lieut Samuel Lloyd RN, Coastguard Officer, at once put off in a small boat. This was wrecked. Two other boats were obtained and eventually the crew of 10 Spaniards were rescued from a rock which they had reached by climbing from the jib-boom. 1858 The first lifeboat sent to the station was a small pulling boat having a crew of eight and pulling six oars. She was on a carriage and was kept in a house between Edgar’s shop and Duffin’s. Lifeboat house constructed at a cost of £83. 1872 Old boathouse sold for £63. New lifeboat house erected at another site at a cost of £245. 1873 Retaining wall built at rear of lifeboat house at a cost of £47. 1885 Flagstaff erected on the hill above the lifeboat station from signalling purposes. 1911 Sudden death of Coxswain W Harding, attributed to him leaving a sick bed to superintend the launch of the lifeboat on service. Committee of Management voted £50 to dependants on 9 February. Silver Medal awarded to Coxswain R Harding; Thanks of the Institution inscribed on Vellum and binoculars to the Honorary Secretary Rev E F Duncan, and binoculars to Mr P Driscoll a member of the local committee, for going out with the lifeboat on 15 November in a strong south east gale, with a very heavy sea and rescued with great difficulty nine of the crew of the ss Tadorna of Cork, which was in distress five miles from Ballycotton. The remaining crew, numbering 12, were rescued by rocket apparatus. 1936 Gold Medal awarded to Coxswain Patrick Sliney, Silver Medal to the Second Coxswain, J L Walsh and Motor Mechanic T Sliney, and Bronze Medals to M C Walsh, J S Sliney and W Sliney and T Walsh for the service on 11 February when the Daunt Rock light-vessel broke away
The RNLI is the charity that saves lives from her moorings. A whole gale was blowing, with a very heavy sea, rain and snow. When the lifeboat put out she met seas so mountainous that spray was flying over the lantern of the lighthouse 196ft high. The lifeboat did not return to her station for three days. She had then been out on service for 63 hours, during which time her crew had only three hours’ sleep. For 25 hours they had no food and all came back suffering from colds and salt water burns. The casualties crew of eight were rescued after the lifeboat went alongside the plunging vessel with seas weeping over her, more than a dozen times. This was one of the most exhausting and gallant services in the history of the Institution. Binoculars were awarded to the Honoroary Secretary, Mr Mahony. 1941 Bronze Medal awarded to Coxswain Patrick Sliney for a service on 30 January. For several days mines had been known to be drifting in the Ballycotton Bay and some had exploded on the shore damaging the village. Most of the villagers had gone inland but the lifeboat crew remained. A report was received that a ship’s boat had been seen south of Flat Head 17 miles away. The lifeboat launched at 1515 and after a long journey in dangerous waters, in thick fog, through heavy confused seas with a strong east-south-easterly wind, reached the ship’s boat from the ss Primrose of Liverpool just as she was sinking, and rescued the eight men on board. 1943 Silver Medal awarded to Coxswain Sliney; Bronze Medal to Second Coxswain Michael Lane Walsh and Motor Mechanic Thomas Sliney; and SecondService Clasp to the Bronze Medal of Assistant Motor Mechanic William Sliney when the lifeboat went out for 30 hours on 23 and 24 December 1942 in a south-south-westerly gale with heavy rain squalls and a very rough sea, and rescued the crew of 35 of the ss Irish Ash of Dublin and saved the vessel. It was a long and arduous service and Coxswain Sliney came ashore with his hands bruised, his wrists twice their normal size and his voice almost gone. 1950 Former coxswain Patrick Sliney retired. He had served for 39 years as an officer of the lifeboat, being coxswain for 28 years, took part in the rescue of 114 lives and was awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals for gallantry and the Institutions Thanks inscribed on Vellum. 1958 Centenary Vellum awarded to station. 1979 A special framed certificate awarded to coxswain and crew for display at the station in recognition of their services in connection with numerous yachts in difficulties during the Fastnet Race on 14 August. 1998 Trent class lifeboat ON 1233 placed on service 5 March. 2002 Silver Medal awarded to crew member Fergal Walsh for entering the sea on 18 August 2001 to save a young man who had been swept off the rocks. Fergal took a line attached to a buoy with him as he swam through the large dumping surf and heavy spring. His companion Mr Peter Cuthbert held onto the other end of the line. Fergal recovered the young man but Peter was knocked off his feet by the sea and the line became wrapped around Fergal’s torso and neck. Fergal was able to hold onto the young man and despite being injured by the seas dumping him on the rocks, got him to the shore. Peter was also injured as the seas knocked him over again. The Coastguard Cliff Rescue team recovered all three men. Mr Peter Cuthbert was awarded A Framed Letter of Thanks signed by the Chairman of the RNLI. For this service Fergal Walsh also received the Maud Smith Reward for Courage for the bravest act of lifesaving during 2001 and the James Michael Bower Endowment Fund Award as the only Silver Medallist during 2001. 2002 A new boathouse completed in December at a cost of £352,561. MEDAL RECORD Seventeen Medals have been awarded, two Gold, seven Silver, eight Bronze, the last being voted in 2002.
Ballycotton Lifeboats 150 Years of Gallantry New Book by Nicholas Leach and Brendan O’Driscoll A new book telling the story of 150 years of Ballycotton lifeboats, the rescues, the people and boats is being prepared for publication this summer. Ballycotton lifeboat station is one of the most famous in Ireland and one of the best known of any in the whole lifeboat service. First established in 1858, the station and its volunteer crews have a long and proud history of rescuing those in peril off the coast of County Cork. The book is at present being put together and the authors, Nicholas Leach and Brendan O’Driscoll, would be pleased to hear from anybody who might wish to submit photos or information regarding the lifeboat. If you want to help, please contact either Nicholas Leach at Nicholas.leach@virgin.net or Brendan O’Driscoll at 086-1686992 or Harbourview2003@eircom.net. Nicholas Leach has written extensively about the lifeboat service in Britain and Ireland, including a book on the lifeboats of Rosslare Harbour in 2007. Brendan O’Driscoll wrote and published a history of Youghal lifeboat in 1999. The book should be launched in June and full details of the launch event will be provided when known.

Lifelong learning week is over for another year as part of the week long activities our group had a table quiz which was held in Douglas Community School, we had in all 12 teams of four. The winners were Maureen Grimes and John Dwyer and two students ,who each received Book Tokens to the value of 25 Euros. A big thank you to John Motherway Quiz Master who organised the questions, also Sean, Aileen ,and Owen Casey Transition Year teacher for all their hard work. Last but not least the boys who took part; they are a great bunch of boys so kind and caring to our older people, they also teach our group the “Log on and Learn” computer class every week. You are a credit to your parents and your school! Both young and old learn from each other! Great response to our planned visit to Buckingham Palace on July 29th with a overnight stay. I have booked a private tour for our group at 5pm on 29th and you get a glass of Champagne when the tour is finished. Closer to home we have a trip to CIT college on 5th May. We will enjoy a tour of the College and also have our lunch there. The bus will leave Douglas at 11am and be home around 5. We will also visit the Port of Cork offices and enjoy the beautiful paintings and the boardroom which remained unchanged since the 1800s. Following that and weather permitting we will enjoy a trip down the Harbour. Everyone pray for good weather on 12th May. We also have trips to Killarney limerick Gouganne Barra, the Naval Base, and lots more. We have to take Minnie to Shaws in Limerick,
because it is the only place she can get one to fit her she says, you will know what I am talking about because she modelled it on the bus last year for us, answers on a postcard. By now we will know the outcome of the budget. I hope the older people’s allowances will not be touched, after all these are the people who are the backbone of what we called the Celtic tiger, the elderly people took a back seat during the boom years and the Celtic Tiger they helped to build did not help them. That is why it is so important as a community, especially in the present climate ,we get to know our neighbours. Many people are now at home all dayafter losing their jobs, I suspect feeling very isolated. We all need to play our part in reducing isolation and loneliness in our community. Belated Happy Birthday to Barry Denton!

Building Energy Rating (B.E.R.) Simple Ideas to Improve Energy Efficiency of your Home With Eamonn Twohig. BER Assessor. There are many measures that can be implemented to improve the energy efficiency of your home. However, a starting point would be to have an energy audit carried out by a registered Building Energy Rating (BER) Assessor. This will give you an energy performance rating to measure against once the improvement measures have been carried out. A simple measure is to install a chimney damper to any open fireplace. 75% of the heat from an open fire is lost through the chimney when in use which makes it extremely inefficient. A chimney damper can be closed to 33% of its open capacity, thereby reducing the burning rate of the fuel and redirecting heat back down the chimney into the living space. It also saves up to 60% of the heat lost from a room when the chimney is not in use. Another simple measure is to install Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRV) on your radiators. These are self regulating valves that allow you to control the temperature in each room separately by regulating the flow of hot water to the radiator. With the recommended comfortable temperature for a living room being 21 degrees and 18 degrees for all other rooms, it is easy to set your TRV’s to maintain same in an energy efficient manner.

BEAT THE RECESSION THIS EASTER!
k Things to do This Wee “Oh to be in Ireland now that the Spring is there”. Hopefully Robert Browning won’t turn in his grave over the paraphrase of his immortal words, but Ireland is a place to be this time of year. Spring, starts early, comes slowly and grows into an overwhelming display of nature’s power. As usual we’ll try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to you or to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week. Flower Garden: Plant out perennials in groups of three, five or seven for maximum effect. Sprinkle fertiliser around clumps of tulips to boost flowering . Sow hardy annual flowers directly into beds where you’d like them to bloom. Prune Himalayan honeysuckle (Leycesteria) . Pick off dead flower heads from spring bulbs . Protect emerging shoots of delphiniums and lupins from slugs and snails using a barrier such as copper
tape for pots or garlic granules .Buy plug plants and young bedding to grow on for baskets, pots and bedding displays . Sow annual climbers, such as cup-and-saucer vine (Cobaea), nasturtium and morning glory (Ipomoea) INCLUDEPICTURE “http://www.gardenersworld. com/i/wtdn_printCheckbox.gif” \* MERGEFORMATINET Repot any top-heavy or pot-bound houseplants Vegetable Garden: Sow sweetcorn in deep modular seed trays under cover to plant out in early June. Plant out onion sets grown in pots under glass. Feed fruit trees and bushes. Warm soil with cloches or sheets of polythene for early sowings . Plant out maincrop potatoes . Plant asparagus crowns . Sow the following crops this week if conditions are suitable: beetroot, parsnips, turnips, onions, peas and mangetout, broad beans, lettuce and salad leaves, spinach, radish, rocket, mizuna, cauliflower, cabbage and Brussels sprouts

Derelict site I have contacted the Council requesting them to do something to improve the derelict shop site on the Rochestown road. They have confirmed that they will remove the fence and install a 2.4m high palisade fence and gates and I welcome this decision.
Cooneys Lane Some months ago I tabled a motion requesting the engineer to address the bad corner below Ardfield. He informed me that 60,000 had been allocated under the Low Cost Accident Improvement Scheme. He is currently deciding how it will be spent, given that it may be necessary to take down trees and to install footpaths etc. It is proposed to undertake work there after Easter.
Foxwood The Engineer has confirmed that appropriate Children at Play, Speed Limit and Stop signage will be installed in the Estate before September and as early as possible. I believe that the Department of Education should give specific funding to Local Government for Traffic Calming adjacent to Schools. This is a cause of much concern to residents and local school authorities and council officials and cash strapped councils should not have to seek monies for same from other tight budgets. I believe such funding should be built into the costs of building the school in the first instance.

Carrigaline Community News
Vote for change, Vote for Deirdre Dear Constituents, Last week during Cork’s Life Long Learning at Ring Mahon House in Mahon, I had the privilege of meeting Kathleen Harty. She told us how she wanted a better life for herself and her six beautiful daughters and knew she could do this through education. As the recession across the world and in Ireland continues to worsen, there are much less job opportunities available. This can be difficult and frustrating and until economic growth resumes there is great benefit in improving our skills and employability. On Friday the 5th of February, it was announced that FAS will provide an additional 51,000 places over the 27,000 previously planned in 2009 under the Bridging Foundation Training, Specific Skills Training and Traineeship Programs. These programs will provide short training courses for job changers or those recently unemployed. Details

In The Loop IMROs Showcase Tour 2009 has begun following a record-breaking response to the call for entries for the 2009 IMRO Showcase Tour, the line up of gigs and bands has now been announced. Having considered tracks from a jaw dropping 900 + bands, 45 acts have been chosen to play on the tour all over Ireland, here is the line up for the Cork round; Saturday 11 April – Cyprus Avenue; Philtre (myspace.com/philtremusic), O Emperor (myspace.com/oemperorofficial), Toy Soldier (myspace.com/toysoldier), John Blek And The Rats (myspace.com/johnblekandtherats). A number of artists are yet to be announced. A selection of bands will take part in a ‘Best of Showcase’ show, which will take place in Dublin in early May. All door times are 8pm. Tickets and prices available from venues. The IMRO Showcase Tour is the longest running event of it’s kind in Ireland. Over it’s 18-year tenure the tour has facilitated a live platform for numerous Irish artists including Fight Like Apes, Delorentos, Declan O’Rourke, Oppenheimer, The Immediate and The Flaws. The IMRO Showcase Tour provides bands with the opportunity to connect with a wider audience and gives music fans the chance to see the very best in emerging Irish talent. Away from home now and Bob Sinclair has released a new song, entitled “La La Song”, it’s a collaboration with members of the Sugarhill Gang who would be best remembered for their hugely popular “Rapper‘s Delight” single. Production-wise its much different from many other Sinclair tunes such as “Sound Of Freedom”, “Rock This Party”, “Love Generation” and “World Hold On”. All of the said tunes are up-lifting, happy songs with bright guitar melodies and kids either used for backing vocals or featured in the video. He uses all of these in his new track, but the difference this time is old school rappers Hendogg, Master Gee & Wonder Mike from the original Sugarhill Gang are featured on it. In fact their rapping is very similar to their hit tune “Rapper‘s Delight”. Never the less we can’t knock it, its got a funky beat with kids singing 1. stuff. Adding to that are the Sugarhill rappers with some body moving rhyming raps which are the with Peter Bowles icing on the cake. Also new is David Guetta Ft. Kelly Rowland“When Love Takes Over” from his new album. It opens with a piano riff almost exactly like Coldplays’-“Clocks” then the vocals kick in, supplied by Kelly Rowland. She is the winning factor in this tune, what a voice, its overwhelming, you can’t help but sing along. As with Guetta’s other tunes the beat that kicks in after the vocal build up is never what you expect, but also never fails to get the head bopping, expect to hear this one in the clubs this summer without a doubt, looking forward to seeing what else he releases from his album.

City Council hosts Civic Reception for Nemo Rangers GAA Club The Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Brian Bermingham and Cork City Council today (Monday April 6th 2009) at 6.00 p.m. hosted a Civic Reception in the Council Chamber, City Hall, Cork for Nemo Rangers GAA Club to mark the club’s victory in the Munster Senior Football Championship. The Lord Mayor congratulated the club on their ongoing success based on their commitment to the game at underage level: “Only last week, despite the bitter cold night, there was nothing to dampen the high spirits of the almost 400 boys and girls who turned out to participate in this year’s festival of hurling and football. Great credit is due to the organizing committee for their work in preparing this year’s competition and in particular having the opening night under lights. Fourteen Munster Club titles and seven All Ireland Club pennants has made you the kingpins of club football throughout the land. You have provided a host of successful players to county teams including two senior All Ireland winning captains in former Cork team coach Billy Morgan and Denis Allen among many others. May you continue to enjoy such success in the coming years”.

College Corinthians AFC A quiet weekend on the schoolboy front due to the finals of the Munster Inter League competitions with the Cork Schoolboys League involved in all four finals and with Corinthians supplying players to all Cork panels. However some important games were played and the highlight was another classic encounter between Mayfield and Corinthians Premier side in the Under 13 local Cup which Corinthians won in a seven goal thriller.
Under 13 Local Cup Mayfield Utd. 3 Corinthian Boys 4 There is only one place to start this weeks review and that has to be in Mayfield park and the latest installment in what has become a fantastic sporting rivalry between two excellent under 13 sides. Corinthians and Mayfield have met on several occasions over the last few years and invariably they serve up a feast of football and that was certainly the case last Saturday. The two sides had gone into the contest in great form with Mayfield last week clinching the Premier League title and Corinthians reaching the last four of the National Cup following their semi final victory over St Joseph Boys.
It was Corinthians who were to make the better start on Saturday with Stephen Cronin very influential on the left hand side they raced into a two goal lead with goals from Stephen and a fine free kick from Sean Walsh. However Mayfield are not league champions for nothing and in a sensational start to the second half they stormed back with three goals in a fifteen minute spell to lead 3-2. The contest seemed to have slipped from Corinthians grasp but showing fantastic fighting spirit they regrouped and Sean O’ Mahony struck to level the tie at 3-3. It was not anybody’s game and the tension was unbearable as the game swung from end to end but it was to Corinthians day as Stephen Cronin pounced again to score his second and Corinthians fourth to put his side through to the quarter final of the local cup. On a day when neither side deserved to lose football and the Cork Schoolboys League was tge real winner.
National Cup Update We now know our opponents in the Under 16 & Under 13 National cups with our Under 16’s having home advantage in their quarter final against a very formidable Arklow Town squad. Arklow won away to cup favourites Belvedere in the previous round and are sure to provide a major challenge for our lads. In the Under 13 Semi final we have to travel to Dublin to take on DDSL league leaders Cherry Orchard again another major challenge but one which I am sure the lads will be well up for.

The Underage section takes a break over the Easter weekend when there will be no training on Saturday or Sunday.
Summer Street Leagues The Club is still taking names for this year’s Summer Street Leagues which are due to start on either Saturday April 18th or April 25th. The leagues are always the highlight of the schoolboy season in Corinthians and this year should be no exception.
Under Six (2002 & 2003) There is always a special welcome for our six’s many of whom are coming up to Corinthians for the first time. Our Under Six League is undoubtedly an ideal starting point for any young budding “Ronaldo, Fabregas or Wayne Rooney “, the games are fun filled with the emphasis very much on enjoyment. So if you were born in 2002 / 2003, why not come along, we would love to see you in Corinthians. Street League times for our Under 6 to Under 10 age groups are as follows. Some of the games will be played midweek depending on fixtures and weather conditions. Saturday Under Six ( 2002 / 2003 ) - 12.30pm – 1.45pm Under Seven (2001) - 12.30pm – 1.45pm Under Eight ( 2000) - 4.30pm - 6.00pm Sunday Under Ten ( 1998 ) - 10.00am – 11.30am Under Nine ( 1999 ) – 11.45am – 1.15pm The finals day has been provisionally set for Sunday June 7th. hold different viewpoints it does not mean we are not entitled to express an opinion. That is what I do in this column – express an opinion. I am not a heretic; opinionated yes. My editor Billy Mac helps to keep me on the straight and narrow and endeavours to ensure that I do not cause offense. I am gratified by your response to the column and enjoy hearing your comments. If those same comments were not forthcoming then the writing of this column would be rendered a major waste of time.
Review
T.V.3
I have decided that it is now time to do a review of the column as published over the past two years; primarily what I set out to do. At the commencement over two years ago I felt confident that my knowledge of the local scene at both underage and adult level qualified me to express my opinion on the subject across the whole spectrum sporting comment and in particular that pertaining to G.A.A. affairs. Additionally I would keep up to date through listening to national and local radio as well as reading local and national newspapers. My pet hate has been the arrogance of ex-players who, though brought on board to express an impartial view of a particular game proceed to promote their own club players. I understand that ‘De Paper’ has censored some journalists’ writing during the course of the Cork hurling impasse. On the other hand a weekly contributor (an ex-Cork selector) who suffered as a result of the 2008 panel dispute was allowed to state that all those who marched in support of the protest had done untold damage to Cork hurling. I fully understand and accept that people on the executive have worked hard down through the years and have given great service. Some would say that I jumped on the bandwagon in criticizing the executive and calling for heads to roll but I sincerely think it is time for change. May I give an example of that which is close to my heart? In 1991/92 great work was being done at Douglas at Street Leagues level. The then committee decided it was time to change the accepted format so they began by reducing the numbers on each team and coaching was introduced. The children were now more actively involved and it was not to be simply the survival of the fittest. Equally the County Board needs change, like a rollover of personnel. Organisers become stale and new people with new ideas are needed. As we get older we tend to become somewhat conservative and are slower to embrace change but just because we as individuals
The T.V.3 programme dealing with the Cork hurling impasse was poorly presented, but before going into detail I would pose the question, was it really necessary to revisit the whole sorry mess? Was this subject not covered in thousands of words in the print media and on R.T.E. through Prime Time and a myriad of sports programmes? As to the production itself it was bereft of comment by the main characters – the County Board and the players; this is akin to producing the play, Macbeth while excluding Lady Macbeth or lining out the great Brazilian team of the ‘60s/’70s without the presence of Pele. The programme was billed as an hour-long presentation; it struggled in this area, filling in the time by showing repeated shots of the St. Michael’s delegate entering Páirc Uí Chaoimh and entertaining us with further repeats of Michael Cussen’s goal in the Munster final. This was a clear example of a lack of relative material. We had a review of the Brian Clough film which included, according to one commentator all footballers and managers; people who would have known the subject. Sadly T.V.3 included people (media persons) who have no knowledge of same other than what they pick up from general discussion. For such reasons I believe the programme was a sham and was very poorly researched. Should the programme have gone ahead? Definitely not! Did the programme unravel any new or damning information? Were questions answered? Not really.

Comment It was sad to hear Ger Fitzgerald (Cork selector) describe the people who marched in support of the 2008 panel and those who held opinions differing from his as resorting to mob rule. Such comments are what made this period in the history of Cork G.A.A. a sad and divisive time.

This project which cost €285,000 will benefit the entire community in Douglas. The refurbishment involved increasing the play area by approximately 50% and all the old fixtures being replaced with new ones. The playground had to be closed last September due to ongoing vandalism and general wear and tear. I am happy to see that this playground has been reopened as it is one of the most important amenities in Douglas

Also, present was club secretary Eamonn Dorney who on behalf of Douglas G.A.A. expressed sincere thanks to Ryan’s SuperValu for their generous support. He also noted Noel O’Riordan’s association with the Watergrasshill G.A.A. Club and commented it would be fitting for the two clubs to meet in this years Cork Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship. Meanwhile, the Douglas hurlers continued their preparations for the championship with a challenge game against Freshford Co. Kilkenny last Sunday. Also, the senior footballers were in league action on 2nd April. Douglas recorded an impressive victory over St. Finbarr’s on a scoreline of 1-11 to 0-09, with Barry Fitzgerald scoring the decisive goal. Finally, congratulations to Shane McCarthy and Mark Collins who were both members of the Cork squad that won the recent under 21 Munster football final.
