Shame the same won’t apply to those on the dole………
• Below - Douglas Young at Heart’s Phil Goodman and Ann Sheehan of Douglas Books share a lighthearted moment with Foreign Affairs Minister Miche·l Martin during last Saturday’s booksigning of the minister’s new book ‘Freedom to Choose’ at Douglas Books, Douglas Village Shopping Centre. Pic:George Thompson
Just when I thought the government was showing initiative by doing away with an annual bonus for TDs which amounts to 5 grand each. Then in a follow up announcement it appears the government has back tracked and sitting TDs will receive their annual bonus while it is only future TDs won’t benefit from the annual lump sum. Shame that the same wasn’t applied to those on the dole who won’t be receiving their christmas bonus this year. * * * Congratulations to my good friend and fashion photographer, Miki Barlok who held an exhibition of Fashion Photography at the Boardwalk on Monday evening last as part of Cork Fashion Week. One of Miki’s pics appeared on the cover of last week’s edition of The Post and while he has worked as a press photographer in Cork for the past number of years, he is now recognised as one of Cork’s most prolific Fashion Photographers. * * Farmer’s Markets are becoming more and more popular with many stalls offering some fantastic produce in Douglas, Mahon Point and Blackrock Village but to name a few. Now the popular Mahon Community Centre will host a Farmer’s Market on Wednesday mornings from 9.30am to 2pm an I’m sure this will be another success story for the Centre. * * This week, from Weds 22nd to Sat 25th, Cork hosts the Cork World Book Fest with many events taking place over the period offering a unique celebration of books and reading. As our city centre becomes far more cosmopolitan, the pedestrian area of the Grand Parade will host the end of this festival on Saturday and will feature writers, book stalls, food stalls, music and more. * * Best of luck to Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan who’s next professional fight takes place at Silver Springs this Saturday night as part of a Boxing Fight Night featuring a number of high profile bouts. REMEMBER Dear Editor, So the dirty campaign race is on again. Now Bertie is blaming Brian Cowen for ousting him out. So they are only going back to their roots, Charlie Haughey did the same to Jack Lynch and none of them had any luck. They even robbed Brian Linehan R.I.P. of sickbed money. May God forgive them. Will people ever wake up? Thanking you sincerely, Joe Brown Cork.
FINAL FRONTIER (MEMORY LANE) Dear Editor “Are you going to the Arc?” A familiar phrase bandied about Pana on Saturdays in early ‘60s. The Ballroom of Romance, the final frontier for my generation, imitators of Elvis and Cliff Richard, graduating from Record Hops at Fr. O’Leary Hall, C.C.Y.M.C., the ultimate test, admission to the Arcadia. Showing up in buttoned to the neck Beatle jacked or Prince of Wales check suit. Cut away shirt collar, Slim Jim tie in Windsor knot coloured red, yellow or electric green with matching three pointed breast pocket handkerchief, side buckled high heele3d boots completed the gear. Presley hairstyle, visiting barber for a change of oil rather than a cut. Arcadia intimidating territory for us rookies, soon learning to approach girls from behind when requesting a dance. If refused, melting backwards into the crowd rather than crossing back to boy’s area, red faced or slipping on polished dance floor. Miami, Dixies, Royal, Capitol gave us precious memories of wonderful nights. Yesterday, when we were young! Neil O’Donoghue. Don’t you just love bank holiday Mondays? There was a time in my misguided youth when I hated them because everything shut down but now I have come to appreciate the opportunity to tune out and recharge the batteries. I woke up about 9.30 am. My husband was still asleep. I could hear the boys being boys downstairs in the living room. I thought I would chance nipping into the kitchen for a cup of coffee and grabbing a flapjack, which I made last night and ducking back into bed without raising the attention of the boys: once they know you’re up, you’re up! I had just reached the bottom of the stairs when I was discovered. Two of them raced towards me and had a fight about who was going to hug me first. I peeled them off in exasperation and bolted for the kitchen. Middle son (8) asked for a flapjack. There were three left. I gave him one. Youngest son (6) then came in and claimed the second flapjack. I had my eye on the last one. Then Youngest asked me would I make the jelly. I told him that I had made the jelly last night and that it was in the fridge. He waved me away and starting to climb up on the kitchen counter saying, “There is a packet of jelly up here that you can make”. Again, I told him that it was in the fridge. But he was determined to find it, “No, no, it’s up here, I’ll show you.” Middle son joined in and said, “We know, we made it last night, it’s in the fridge” but he still wasn’t listening. He stood up on the counter. As I tell him the whereabouts of the jelly for the fourth time, he swung open the cupboard door and it bashed me on the head. I closed my eyes and turned away to deal with the pain but as I did I walked into another open cupboard door that dented me on the forehead. I yanked the Doubting Thomas from the counter and throwing open the fridge door said, “There’s your stupid jelly!” Highly indignant, he turned to me and protested, “You don’t have to shout!” At that point my husband wandered into the kitchen and said sleepily, “Is everything ok?” He reached for the last flapjack. I snatched it back out of his hand. Picking up my coffee, I stormed back to bed to recharge my batteries and start all over again.

No new Cork prison until construction of Dublin prison has started The Director General of the Irish Prison Service, Brian Purcell, appeared before the Public Accounts Committee a few weeks ago and as a member of the Committee I took the opportunity to question him on the planned new prison for Cork. In 2006 the Government made a decision to transfer ownership of the site for the new Cork Prison in Kilworth Co. Cork from the Department of Defence to the Department of Justice. However, even this preliminary step has not been taken. Instead of action we have had three years of delay from the Government. When Brian Purcell, the Director General of the Irish Prison Service, came before the Public Accounts Committee I questioned him about the current overcrowding in Cork Prison and the plans for a new Cork prison on the Kilworth site. In reply to my questions he stated: ‘We are under extreme pressure in Cork Prison owing to the numbers coming through…it will not get any better in the short term because all the indications are that the number of people entering the system is on a consistently upward curve’. He also said that: ‘We are under constant pressure in Cork because of the size of the facility…the footprint of the site is so small that the opportunities for development are limited. This is why we believe the 160-acre facility at Kilworth will be of assistance. This offers massive potential for putting in place the new prison and, if need be, for further development on the site. The reality is that there will be no new prison in Cork until construction has begun on the new Dublin prison at Thornton Hall. Given that the development of Thornton Hall to replace Mountjoy Prison continues to be plagued by controversy and delay, it is unlikely that a new Cork prison will be built for many years to come.

YOUR BOOTS WERE MADE FOR WALKING! Indulge your feet this May bank holiday at the Leenane Walking Festival For seasoned and not so seasoned walkers alike, the Leenane walking festival was so popular last year, that the three day event beginning May 1st, is back for 2009. Situated on the edge of Killary Harbour and surrounded by mountains in all directions, Leenane can truly be described as breathtaking, so what better way to spend the weekend than discovering its walking trails; roam through deserted Connemara countryside amongst luscious green hills and take in the awe-inspiring scenery, magnificent mountains, fresh air and beautiful blue seas. The festival is suitable for all and includes guided walks up Mweelrea Mountain (the highest in Connacht!), Leenane Mountain, Devils Mother & Ben Gorm. Walkers will be accompanied by local archaeologists and villagers who will entertain with many stories about the history and daily life in Leenane! But if that sounds like too much hard work, you can take part in one of the low level guided walks along the Famine Tracks and the Western Way. There are also self guided short walks for the family to enjoy. All guided walks are led by qualified and experienced guides, aided by locals with vast knowledge and information on the area. For a one day guided walk the cost is €40 and the cost for two days is €70. Included in price is transport to and from starting and finishing pointsstarting and finishing points and there will be tea, coffee and scones provided at the end of each day – essential for refuelling! And after all that fresh air and exercise, what better way to finish off the evenings then with live music and craic in Leenane village. So are you ready boots? Start walkin’!

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn
Our poem this week comes from Timothy O’Mahony. Timothy is currently studying in Cork Institute of Technology (CIT). He is an engineering student but mainly he loves to write. He enjoys writing poetry and hopes to become a children’s writer in time. He also enjoys acting and has have worked with the Theatre Company Corcadorca during their production of the ‘ The Tempest ‘ and also had a role in movie ‘ The Wind that Shakes the Barley’ which was directed

by Ken Loach. His poem was inspired by a place where he spent a lot time exploring during his teenage years, Our Lady’s Hospital in St. Anne’s on the banks of our own River Lee. It was once the longest building in Ireland and also a well known mental hospital. Timothy and his friends often spent time looking around and maybe finding a little adventure, they rarely left the place without a gasp. It was haunting place to say the least.

Special Olympics Star is Person of the Month Pat Dorgan has been named April Person of the Month to mark his participation and promotion of the Special Olympics. At present Pat, from Redemption Road, Blackpool, is fronting the 2009 fundraising campaign for the Special Olympics Ireland and is also part of an awareness campaign to increase participation in sport by those with an intellectual disability. Pat Dorgan was a multi-medal winner table tennis at the Special Olympics World Summer Games at Shanghai in 2007. Such was the force of Pat’s personality that he became for some the face of those 2007 Games in China, and appeared on broadcast and print media at home and abroad. Having undergone surgery in 2008, Pat has now returned to full fitness, winning a recent Munster Championship on behalf of his club Beech Hill.
Pat is part of a well known Cork family of sixteen, and his brother Poet and Author Theo Dorgan was a previous Person of the Month winner. “I’m very happy to get this award. I’m proud of myself for winning my medals in Shanghai and proud of Special Olympics. Thank you very much. “Of course we are all delighted for Pat to receive this award not just for his sporting achievements but for the impact he has had by sheer force of his personality” said Chris Dorgan, brother of Pat.

AMBER ALERT MISSING CHILD SYSTEM WILL SAVE LIVES Dear Constituents, The introduction of a new ‘Amber Alert’ system for missing children will help the Cork Gardaí to save lives. This system will also help the parents of any missing child to get the information to as wide an audience as possible. The ‘Amber Alert’ system, will allow the Gardaí to possibly use local and national media as well as text and email to quickly spread information about missing children. It has been successfully implemented in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, France and the Netherlands. Every year in Cork there are dozens of missing person calls made to the Gardaí. Thankfully, in most cases these prove to not be serious incidents and the missing children turn up safe and
sound. However in the cases where a more serious incident has occurred we need to be sure that all that can be done, is being done. The Amber Alert system is a simple and effective means of getting information out about missing children to as wide an audience as possible as quickly as possible. It will help the peace of mind of the parents of any missing child, knowing that the information has reached as many people as it can and that the net is closing in on their missing child. Ultimately the more people who know a child is missing, the more people who can help in the effort to find that child. This will lead to more lives being saved and will also act as another barrier to any abduction attempts, should they God forbid happen to any child in our area. Deirdre. Nano Nagle, who died on 26th April 1784, founded a Gospel based education system and created a permanent legacy of hope in Ireland and around the world. The tiny seed which she planted in 1754, with a school of 30 girls in a mud cabin in Cork, took root and the 2,500 Presentation Sisters serving around the world today are a living testament to that hope.

Cllr Tim Lombard
Anti-Social Behaviour is out of Control As I spent the last few weeks on the doorsteps it has become quite apparent that one of the major social problems in our society is anti-social behaviour. At this time of the year anti-social behaviour, in particular at the weekends, increases dramatically. With the long evenings approaching the unfortunate situation is that this problem is going to intensify. I believe one of the major problems is the lack of regulation regarding off-licenses. In some areas we have seen up to five or six off-licenses spring up over the last three or four years. The lack of regulation regarding how many off-licenses in an area is leading to drink being made available to youths. The lack of investment by the government also has contributed to this problem. We have seen the government cancel the lotto funding for all sporting organisations this year. This capital funding is essential so that sporting organisations can cater for our youth and it makes no logical sense not to invest in these voluntary sporting clubs. Over the next few months An Garda Siochana will be inundated with anti-social behaviour problems. We must also insure that An Garda Siochana have the resources to deal with the issue.

action projects on issues ranging from domestic violence to poverty and social inclusion of the elderly are among the 120 selected for this annual exhibition from the hundreds undertaken by young people across the country. They will also be in contention for the Young Social Innovators of the Year awards, which will be announced on the day with the overall project team receiving a grant to further their work. Last year Colaiste Muire from Ennis, Co Clare won the overall title for a project on bullying. The Showcase – the largest youth action event of its kind in the country – is open to the public and in addition to the exhibition includes workshops, a Speak Out youth theatre, poster gallery and “speakers’ corner” as well as a special “YSI Den” where young people can pitch for support and resources to continue their chosen project. Co-founded by Sr Stanislaus Kennedy and Rachel Collier, Young Social Innovators is funded through sponsorship. In addition to its main sponsor, the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, the YSI is supported by the Office for the Minister for Children, Irish Sisters of Charity, Irish Aid, the HSE, KPMG, the Department of Education and Science, Combat Poverty and Social Entrepreneurs Ireland.

WHAT’S A PINCHED NERVE?
Health & Beauty
Have you ever been diagnosed with a “pinched nerve”? Have you ever wondered what causes a nerve to become pinched or trapped? Pinched nerves or nerve entrapment are usually diagnosed in association with neck and shoulder pain, or low back pain. But this vague diagnosis, accompanied by a hurried drug prescription, fails to illuminate what is actually pinching the nerve. As nerves branch off the spinal cord within the spine, they must pass through numerous canals in the body to reach their respective target. The first canal a nerve faces is the tiny hole between any two vertebrae. If the vertebrae themselves are displaced or shifted by even a tiny amount, the nerve can get pinched and irritated.
The initial impingement often cannot be felt because only a small fraction of the nerve carries pain messages. When this squeezing irritation breaches a “pain threshold”, it finally hurts. Depending on which fibers within the nerves are being compressed, symptoms may include: sharp, darting pain originating in the neck or low back that radiates into the shoulder, arm or buttock; dull aching, tight and sore muscles; numbness and tingling.

Questions & Answers With John Phillpot Question: I’ve heard that soya can help with hot flushes during the menopause. How can I incorporate it into my diet? Answer: John Philpott and his team at Here’s Health says, Hot flushes are common during the menopause and are caused by declining levels of oestrogen. As the ovaries produce less oestrogen, hormone fluctuations cause surges in the levels of chemicals that dilate blood vessels. This makes blood rush to the skin’s surface which in turn, makes you feel hot and flushed. Soya and soy foods can indeed help to reduce flushing and this is because they are a rich source of isoflavones. Isoflavones are oestrogen-like plant hormones or phytoestrogens that are though to provide an additional hormone boost when oestrogen levels are low. This additional boost helps to reduce fluctuations which should make you less prone to flushing. In Japan, for example, where soya is a dietary
If a nerve is being pinched, wouldn’t it make sense to find out what is causing the pinching? I am appalled at the number of patients I meet who take painkillers or anti-inflammatories as a treatment for these types of health issues thinking that somehow that fixes the underlying cause. Wouldn’t that just mask the problem and allow further damage to be done over time? If your car was warning you of an internal malfunctioning part would you simply place tape over the blinking engine light and carry on driving? If you have been diagnosed with a pinched or trapped nerve, it might do you well to have the problem assessed by a Doctor of Chiropractic, so it has the chance to return to normal and heal properly.
staple, less than 25% of menopausal women are reported to suffer with hot flushes, compared to 75% in Ireland and the UK. So definitely a ‘thumbs up’, but how do you incorporate it into your diet? Soya milk, protein powder, meat substitutes and most soya supplements tend to provide very few active isoflavones. The active isoflavones in soya are called Genistein, Diadzein and Glycetein. In Japan, soya foods are almost always cultured or fermented before being eaten so the Japanese obtain far more active phytoestrogens from their food. There is a supplement that comes close though. True Food Superpotency Soyagen from Higher Nature offers one of the highest concentrations available of the active isoflavones Genistein, Diadzein and Glycetein. More importantly,
the True Food fermentation method replicates the natural blueprint of isoflavones as they are found in traditionally fermented soya foods, matching the average Japanese daily intake of active isoflavones. Take one tablet daily. For further advice or information, ask at your local health shop.

Building Energy Rating (B.E.R.) Cavity Wall Insulation With Eamonn Twohig. BER Assessor. Considering about 30% to 35% of the heat in your home is lost through the walls, installing better insulation between walls and outside atmosphere can realise instant savings and improved energy performance. One of the better and more cost effective methods of wall insulation is cavity wall insulation. To be suitable for cavity wall insulation, the wall needs to be of two leaf with cavity space construction (75mm to 100mm cavity). Older houses with cavity block construction are unsuitable. In its simplest from, small holes are drilled through the outer leaf of the wall, insulation (usually bonded bead) is pumped into the cavities under pressure and on completion the holes are plugged so as to be largely unnoticeable. The holes are sufficiently numerous and strategically located so as to ensure complete cavity fill e.g. holes drilled under window sills. Because of the specialist equipment and expertise required, it is strongly recommended to engage a professional installer who can provide you with a 20 to 25 year guarantee on product. The operation usually takes half to a full day depending on house size and complexity. The average cost is in the region of circa €1000 with a typical payback period of 4 to 5 years in extra energy savings. Cavity wall insulation is also eligible for a grant of €400 under the Home Energy Saving (HES) scheme.

Brainteazer Last Week’s Teazer: Ali ben-Ibrahim was a salt dealer, every day he went to the market with two huge sacks of salt tied to his donkey. One hot day, as they passed along the banks of the Tigris River, the donkey broke free from Ali and plunged into the cool water. When the salt-seller finally got the beast to leave the river, it immediately noticed that much of the salt had dissolved was therefore considerably lighter. After that, no mat-

ter how hard Ali tried, he could not prevent the donkey from diving into the river and ruining its load of salt. But when it came to lateral thinking Ali himself was no slouch. One day he loaded up the donkey and, as usual, the animal plunged into the river. Then it learned its lesson and never tried that trick again. What had Ali done? Last Week’s Answer. He had loaded the sacks with sand so that they actually became heavier when they went into the water. This Week’s Teazer When the police arrived a man was lying under the car dead. Investigation revealed that although he was not the car’s owner he was the last person to drive it. The car had last been driven that morning but the man’s time of death was established at about 3PM. The car’s owner was discovered in France. Eventually the police and the coroner were satisfied that no crime had been committed. What is the explanation?

k Things to do This Wee Every wind that blows brings something good to somebody. Even ill winds of mischance and calamity – often carry as they go the seeds of Providence, so that out of trouble comes some happy consequence. We’ll try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.
Flower Garden Continue sowing hardy annuals wherever there is a need for colour; Sow extra in spare ground for cutting. Mulch lilies outdoors with compost, and feed those growing in pots. Watch out for black fly on philadelphus, elders and other shrubs, and spray.
Lawns & Hedges
Continue mowing, twice weekly, for a fine finish if the grass is growing vigorously.
Greenhouse Remove greenhouse insulation; apply a light speckle of shading to the glass. Start feeding early tomatoes, and continue removing sideshoots. Sow runner and climbing French beans in pots for planting out in 3-4 weeks time. Sow surplus half-hardy annuals for greenhouse pot-plants. Continue pricking out bedding , and move older seedlings to the cold frame to harden off. Keep newspapers handy in case of sudden night frosts. Plant tomatoes in unheated greenhouse if not already done.
Water Garden Kitchen Garden Tuck straw or special mats around strawberry plants to keep the fruit clean; do this before plants begin to sprawl. Remove grease bands from fruit trees and burn. Cut asparagus spears regularly, but not from new plants. Remove flowers from perpetual strawberries for heavier crops later in the year. Sow kolh-rabi little and often, and every 3-4 weeks for young tender crops. Support peas before they make their first tendrils. Erect supports for runner and climbing French beans. Thin out autumn rasberry canes to 10cm(4in) apart, and tie in as they grow.
Garden Competition
watch out for pondweed starting to multiply in a warm season.
In General In dry weather spray new conifers and evergreens with water or an anti-desiccant. Keep all new shrubs, trees and fruit well-watered in a dry season, and remove weeds to reduce competition. Treat fence panels and supports with timber preservative. When spraying fruit and other plants in flower, do so in the evening when pollinating insects are not about.

Cistí Pinsin le húsáid ar mhaite an chosmhuintir? Ar an dturas go Baile Átha Cliath na lá cheana d’íocamar an cáin bhealaigh ar an M8 sa chontae. Is do chomhlacht príobháideach a théann an íocaíocht sin, agus an íocaíocht cáin bhealaigh ar mórbhealaigh eile na tíre, idir an M50 agus an M1 lasmuigh de Dhroichead Átha, i measc láthair eile. Chuir sé ag smaoineamh mé, go háirithe ag tráth seo an cúlú eacnamaíochta, tuige nach bhfuil an Rialtas féin ag bailiú an cáil bealaigh seo go díreach? Ag caint liom le gaolta thuas i mBaile Átha Cliath d’inis mé dóibh faoin smaoineamh seo agus d’aon-ghuth nach mór d’fhiafraíodar tuige nach úsáideann an Rialtas an córas pinsin stáit mar mhodh bailiúcháin is dáileadh a leithead d’ioncaim? An-cheist! Mhol gaol amháin go bhfaigheadh an Rialtas an-aitheantas ón bpobal dá infheisteodh an Rialtas an cáin bealaigh seo thar cheann daoine go bhfuil pinsin stáit acu – chun na pinsin seo a chosaint sa todhchaí!. Is é atá i gceist aige go gcruthóidh an Stáit comhlacht pinsin ar leith chun tabhairt faoi bhainistíocht a dhéanamh ar airgid na dtionscnamh poiblí éagsúla – cosúil le mórbhealaigh a thógáil agus an cáin bhealaigh a bhailiú – agus díriú ar an infheistíocht seo a rith ar mhaithe le dóthain airgid a bhailiú chun íoc as pinsin mórchuid muintir na tíre a íoc. Is fearr seo a dhéanamh, dar leis an ngaol seo, ná an t-airgid a bhailítear a thabhairt do chomhlachtaí príobháideacha le dáileadh i measc iad siúd go bhfuil scaireanna acu sna comhlachtaí áirithe seo. Cé go raibh mórchuid an ailt seo scríte agam Dé Sathairn seo thart, cuir sé iontas orm nuair a d’oscail mé nuachtán an Domhnaigh, an Sunday Business Post, chun a príomh-scéal a fheiceáil faoin dteideal “Pension Cash to be used to fund infrastructure”. San alt seo thuairisc an nuachtáin go gcuirfear na billiúin Euro atá suite i gcistí pinsin ar fáil chun íoc as oibreacha infrastructúra éagsúla a chur i gcrích agus chun airgead a chur ar fáil do pháirtnéireachtaí príobháideacha is poiblí. Is léir go bhfuil neart daoine ag smaoineamh ar thábhacht ciste pinsin agus ar shlite conas maitheas an chosmhuintir a chosc, seachas ar shuathaireacht roinnt daoine. Cé nach bhfuil moltaí mar seo gan a dheacrachtaí b’fhéidir go bhfuil sé thar am smaointe bunúsacha nua mar seo a chur chun chinn, ar mhaithe le cosmhuintir na tíre seachas ar mhaithe leo san nach bhfuil mar dhia acu ach an airgead! Feicfimid cad a thitfidh amach, amach anseo!

Gardai on ‘their Bikes’ Over the last few months I have written about the one way system in the city end of the Ballinlough Road to Bellair Park, that this been ignored by motorists who continue to drive down the wrong way, and don’t think of the danger involved.
I contacted the Gardai at Anglesea Street who assured me they would put extra patrols on the area at different times of the day.

I was driving up the road last Wednesday, there I saw a garda on a push bike chatting to one of the residents at her gate.
I stopped, and a chat with him, he is one of our Community Gardai, he told me that he has patrolled the area on a regular basis in the last while, both in the patrol car and on his bike.
I think it is great to see a Garda cycling, and stopping to have a word with the residents as well.

In The Loop with Peter Bowles
Celebrity adoption; for fame and fashion? It seems these days that adopting a child is the latest trend for celebrities, perhaps they think it improves their image. Recently Madonna was turned down when she applied to adopt Chifundo “Mercy” James, Mercy?…in all fairness what is going through their mind when they are thinking of names!! Chifundo is a three year old Malawi child, Madonna already has an adopted Malawi son, David. Her application for adoption of Chifundo was rejected by the Malawi judge as she didn’t meet the required residency requirements. Why does she have to adopt a child from Malawi? Why take a child from what they know in their own country and adopt them only to subject them to the paparazzi of New York and London amongst others. Constant traveling and a totally different lifestyle from the one they would have in their own country. Madonna has since appealed the ruling and the case will be heard on May 4th by 3 Supreme court judges. That sorry excuse for a celeb, Amy Winehouse, is rumored to in the process of attempting to adopt a young child from the Caribbean Island of St. Lucia. I think she has a cheek to attempt such a thing having been through rehab for drug and alcohol abuse at the tender age of 25, who is she to look after a child when clearly not capable of minding herself. Worse yet is that she only became interested in adoption after hearing her estranged ex Blake Fielder-Civil will soon be a father. Another startling story about adoption unfolds in Mumbai. ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ child-star Rubina Ali is at the centre of sensational claims that her father has offered her up for sale, looking for approx €231,000. The nine-year-old’s father, Rafiq Qureshi, allegedly put his daughter on the market for the huge sum and blamed her moviestar status for his decision to sell her. Qureshi was approached at his home in Mumbai, India by an undercover reporter, who claimed to be acting on behalf of a wealthy Arab sheik who wanted to adopt the child. Qureshi told the journalist: “We are considering Rubina’s future. Obviously if you wanted to adopt we could discuss this, we are talking of around £50,000 (€56,000) for this to happen. We can discuss everything about this deal when we meet. There’s a lot of interest in Rubina, she’s become very famous.”

But in a further call, he allegedly told the reporter he planned to sell his daughter to the highest bidder, for which he expected $300,000 (€231,000) from the sale. Qureshi’s brother also said “The child is special now. This is NOT an ordinary child. This is an Oscar child!”. One reason for the sale is that apparently Rubina’s family are furious with the fact that despite the film doing so well and their pretty daughter becoming so famous, they are still living in such rough conditions. Rafiq is streetwise and knows that soon his daughter’s success will be forgotten and her moment of fame will be over. Officials at children’s charities have expressed their concern over the case, and have pledged to help Ali. Save The Children’s Adrian Lovett said, “Save the Children pays tribute to reporters for highlighting this awful reality. We will do all we can to help Rubina.”

G.A.A. FOCUS Snippets from the Local and National Scene By Pat Harrington Pride in the Club The G.A.A. club plays a huge role within the local community; in many cases it is right at the heart of activities at parish level, providing as it does sport for the young people and adults alike. The club house affords an opportunity for its members to socialize and it is often the place where newcomers to the area (potential members) experience their first contact with the people with whom they are likely to spend the rest of their lives. A fair proportion of the members give much of their time to looking after the youth, from 5-year-old Street Leaguers to young adults. Some would describe those mentors as social workers. This may be a strong statement but having said that it does take special people to care for these young citizens, providing the discipline and character-building so vital in these times. For most parents their first introduction to the club is, as it is with their children through the Street Leagues. For those who come from a G.A.A. background the transition is so much easier and they may readily become involved when requested to do so. For others it is often viewed as a child-minding service. After a few years of coaching and fun games through the Street Leagues period the young person moves on to underage level where the importance of parent support cannot be over-emphasized. The attendance of the father or mother at the matches can be vital to the development of the child, and when a parent drives the child to an away game it is always appreciated by the team mentors. Tournament games may be organized involving teams from within Cork county and the participation of teams from other counties is a welcome development. Food is provided for the home and visiting teams and this is where the parents come into their own in preparing the goodies in the club kitchen. It is this voluntary effort that makes the G.A.A. club. It is becoming more and more difficult to get people involved, be it at committee level or as a mentor or coach. Make no mistake about it the demands can be huge. As a selector one would be expected to attend at training on two evenings a week and a game at the weekend. Additionally of course there may be meetings and the consequent phone calls to be dealt with. A sacrifice of ones time and energy. In the event of money being tight and the everyday running of the club is putting a strain on the already overburdened coffers and when a cutback on capital spending be-
comes a neccessity the voluntary participation of the members in refurbishment of the club premises and the maintenance of pitches becomes the lifeblood as well as the keystone of the club. People with expertise in different areas freely become involved in the work. Only then do we realize the depth of talent available to us. Douglas is fortunate to have among its members, carpenters, joiners, electricians and painters who never fail to apply their talents when the need arises. Equally the club is blessed with a number of active retired people who offer their services in the everyday maintenance of buildings and playing areas. Colm O’Rourke Former Meath county footballer and T.V. Pundit Colm O’Rourke recently wrote an article in the Sunday Independent referring to the current recession.; he saw these times as “an opportunity for people in general to resurrect old values of courtesy, respect, helpfulness and community spirit – the things the G.A.A. stand for”. The Players The commitment given to our games by the modern player is, to put it mildly, huge. He will not alone train twice a week but will work out in the gym, practice in the hurling alley or kick football outside the designated days. Diet and lifestyle is a major consideration in his daily discipline. There would be an appreciation and understanding of the time and commitment expected from a player among the majority of people while others take it for granted. People get involved for various reasons. The level of commitment would differ among club members. It is the huge array of all the different talents and indeed the different personalities that make a club special. As in all walks of life new personnel with new ideas are necessary in keeping a freshness and vibrancy within the club. Cork Football The Cork senior footballers attained their goal in winning promotion to Division 1 of the national league. They achieved 5 victories, 1 draw and 1 defeat in the campaign. The Rebels won four of the games with consummate ease. I’d be pretty sure that Conor Counihan would have preferred stiffer challenges in these encounters. The panel appears to have been strengthened from last year (which is positive). The game with Monaghan in the division 2 final on May 3rd. will be another challenge. Regards until next week, Pat.

DOUGLAS RFC News By Kieran Mc Dermott Last weekend saw our under age activities draw to a close for the season. First up were our Under 8’s who welcomed Kinsale RFC to Moneygourney on Saturday morning for a friendly. After a tough contest where both sides gave their all, Kinsale emerged victorious. Back to St. Columbas hall after the game for some well earned food & drinks and the presentation of medals to participants for the year, a great day was had by all. Also on Saturday, the Under 12 squad plus coaches headed for Limerick for the end of season trip. We had organized a friendly against St. Mary’s RFC in the early afternoon. They were a strong side and Douglas had their work cut out, but with an impressive display by Rory Horgan to score four tries, and two more tries coming from Ian Kiely and Cian Mc Dermott, Douglas won on a scoreline of 6-5. St. Mary’s provided the squad with some welcome refreshments in their clubhouse after the game and their hospitality was second to none. Next we headed to Thomond Park for the Munster V Connaught clash and our young squad got into the spirit of the occasion and really enjoyed the match. There was a lot of tired boys by the time the bus rolled
in to Douglas that night ! It was an enjoyable end to the season for this fine side who have impressed this year, winning plenty of fixtures, culminating in winning the South Munster U-12 Shield a few weeks previously. Finally on Sunday last the Under 10 team headed for Cork Con to compete in the Ned O’ Connor Memorial Cup competition. We were up against some stiff competition with teams from Cork Con, St. Anthony’s School, Muskerry, Dolphin and Kinsale. First up was Cork Con who never really got into gear, and Douglas were easy winners at 5-0. Our next match was against St. Anthony’s and although Douglas defended well they could not break through for the vital scores and Anthony’s won 2-0. Last match in the pool was against a strong Muskerry outfit. It was a tough game with both sides attacking and defending well and after some strong forward play and impressive breaks from the backs, Douglas won 4-2. Douglas had topped their pool so it was on to the semi final against Dolphin. At this stage, after the glorious sunshine and some bruising encounters, Douglas forwards were suffering some injuries and despite their best efforts they were powerless to stop a physically superior Dolphin side. End of the road for Douglas but the young team had given their all, and the coaches were justifiably proud of their young charges. After the medal presentation the lads were treated to an impromptu photo session with Munster’s own Rua Tipoki
Sunday’s Well U12 Cup Champions by Martin Connolly. For the second time in 3 years Sundays Well U-12 have won the blue riband of mini-rugby, the South Munster,Finns Cup , defeating Mallow in a marvellous final at Kinsale on the Sunday 30 March last. After their tremendous performances in the city qualifiers , the Well went into Sundays competition with high hopes. Our first opponents were Midleton in the quarter final. The Well were out of traps early, John Poland set up Kevin Flahive for 2 excellent trys, and Colm Connolly added a third before half time.the second half was scoreless and so we advanced on a 3-0 scoreline to meet last years winners Clonakilty in the semi-final.This was a tough encounter in difficult weather conditions, with 2 Colm Connolly trys in the opening half giving the Well a deserved half time lead. The second half was again scoreless, with our defence and pack playing superbly to contain a gallant Clon outfit. The Well advanced to the final on a 2-0 scoreline.A strong Mallow team , who defeated a fancied Old Christians in the semi-final, awaited us in the final. Some words of encouragement in the dressing room before the off, from our Chairman, Brendan Keneally set the tone for our display in the final. It is no exaggeration to say this was a marvellous game of rugby, and credit must be given to both sides for an enthralling and sporting contest in difficult weather conditions.Mallow had the better of the opening half without ever looking like scoring , the Well defence and pack again playing superbly. The second half again was a close affair, but the Well were creating the better openings. With 2 minutes remaining and the game scoreless, Evan O Connell turned over a great ball on his own 22 and fed fly-half John Poland who made a truly dashing run to within 10 metres of the line,to offload to Colm Connolly to touch down in the corner for the winning score.Great defensive

work in final 2 minutes denied Mallow an equaliser and the Well recorded a famous victory, for captain John Bowen to lift the cup. This was truly a great team effort with all 17 members of the panel showing great determination and playing great rugby in all 3 matches. Great credit to coaches Tommy Madden, Mark Poland and Eamonn Dunbar for preparing this team, and getting them to play great rugby. Evan O Connell, Eddie Dunbar,John Poland,Colm Connolly,Kevin Flahive,Evan O Donovan, Sean McCarthy, Aaron Buckley,David o Connor,David Murphy,Ian Coleman,Niall Horgan,Michael Lordan Eleyza Hamsa, Charlie Greer, Ben Cagney London Tour The newly crowned South Munster Cup champions, Sundays Well U 12 panel, had a very successful tour to London weekend of 3 to 5 April. Our first stop off was to Twickenham, the home of English rugby, on Friday afternoon, where the exiting from the tunnel to the pitch was the highlight. On Sat morning we travelled to Reading, and played local club Redingensians in a series of matches winning 2 and losing the final game. We enjoyed food and drinks with the locals, who were very impressed with our standard of play, and invited us to call back when on tour again. In the afternoon we attended the Premiership game between London Irish and Bristol, where we were officially welcomed on the halftime announcements. We saw a great game of rugby, with 9 tries in total, Irish getting 6 and winning handsomely. On Sun morning we travelled to Sunbury, the home of London Irish Amateur RFC, to take part in a triangular competition with the locals, and Cobham RFC.We were undefeated beating both Cobham teams, and drawing with Irish in the final game 1-1. Once again we impressed in our standard of rugby. We were again well looked after in the food and drinks department. Grateful thanks to former pres boy Michael Conole, Irish U-12 manager for all his help and organisation. Special thanks to Terry Long, London Irish club secretary ,and former Chriost Ri pupil and Dolphin player who made us all feel so welcome. It was a hugely successful tour, where the 23 boys and 11 adults did Sundays Well proud.

Motocross – The Fast and Furious Fast and furious, spectacular was what some people described last weekend as what is widely accepted now as the best racing and crowd, seen in Vernon Mount in recent times The action kicked off at 10.30 with the first of four practice runs so riders could find their lines on the third practice the MX 2s A and Bs there was a few accidents, so the organizers had to wait until the track was clear, this proved a bit difficult with riders at different locations around the track and this took up some time. With the sun shining on the riders this was always going to be tough on their bodies, with their fitness levels high, riders race about 90 percent of there max heart rate and 200 riders from all over Ireland and the Uk looking for that lucrative crown the 2009 Irish motocross championship title. First race was MX1 A and Bs, Stuart Edmonds from Dublin and Robert Hamilton from the north pulled clear with Edmonds lapping at 1.33 on the former grand prix track. Wayne Garrett, Gary Gibson and Kildare’s Ross Browne, just back after a riding injury in Spain, tried to keep in touch with the front two but the pace was just phenomenal. On lap 10 out of 17 Hamilton landed heavily after the table top and retired with a ankle injury so this gave Edmonds a breather, winning with 30 seconds to spare. Such was the pace at the front that Garrett, Gibby, Browne, Merton, Mahon and Leonard on board the TMC Honda were the only riders on the same lap as the CCM TM of Edmonds. The first of MX2 s A and Bs two races after the MX1s the battle resumed David Gorman, Gary Gibson, Jason Garret, and Michael Mc Cammond all form the Northern Ireland were trying to stop Edmonds, but on the first turn after the start all hell broke loose for Edmonds, falling and breaking his left foot peg. Edmonds is a pro, he remounted and dusted himself down and to his determination, with one foot peg this makes it hard for a rider for not just balance but he can turn a bike or correct a bike on the ground or in the air, but brilliance on Edmonds behalf as one described seeing him move through the field with his flamboyant style to finish just behind England’s Sandyford-smith in ninth. To give some prospective on this result, 60 riders in the As and Bs tried to qualify for 40 positions with the likes of Philip Deasy and Jason O Callahan not making the top 40, this gives a idea of the level these guys are at. Other riders that did themselves proud were Chris Moriarty, Jim O Neil, Aaron Beausang, Darragh Buckley, Johathon O’Brien and Christy Hartnett who leads the Irish youths. Next weekend the east Cork club hosts the Southern Centre Youth and Adult championship at Killeagh near Youghal on both Saturday and Sunday with Vernon Mount the following Saturday, holding the Irish youths. Spectators that day are welcome and free of charge.
