The Word

by George Thompson - Editor

The Marina is the place to be this Sunday for a great family fun day! If the weather keeps up or even if it doesn’t, the Marina is the place to be this Sunday for a great family fun day as the Lee Rowing Club holds its Midsummer Regatta. There will be face painting and food with plenty of competition on the water as crews travel from all over the country for this event. The Lee Rowing club is over 150 years old with a distinguished history and is showing huge potential in national competition while some members are representing Ireland at International level this year. Hope to see you there on Sunday!

On Monday evening last I picked up an award on behalf of myself and the Douglas Post which was presented to us by the staff and management of Mahon Community Centre for our service to the community. It was great to see representatives from the many organisations which use the centre while local politicians, senators, community gardaí, representatives from Gael Taca, family and friends also attended the ceremony. Centre manager, Denis Coffey paid tribute to The Douglas Post for its coverage of community events particularly in Mahon and the input it has in the Mahon Community. I would like to sincerely thank everyone involved in last Monday’s award presentation and we at the Post look forward to continuing to build our relationship with Mahon Community Centre and Community in general. I can’t praise the management and staff enough for the work they do and in showing how a Community Centre should be run, for the benefit of the people it serves. The Douglas Young at Heart group made their annual visit to the Naval Base at Haulbowline last Wednesday where they made special presentation to Warrant Officer John Walsh who has hosted the group since they started visiting the Base and who will be retiring this year. It was a poignant day for the Navy, last Wednesday as 24 years earlier to the day, naval personnel and ships were involved in the recovery operation at the site of the Air India disaster. All of us who served at the time will never forget the days, weeks and months after this terrible event.

• Pictured at Mahon Community Centre last Monday evening for the presentation to The Douglas Post were Marie Piper Gregan Advertising Director Douglas Post, Cllr. Terry Shannon and George Thompson Editor/Director Douglas Post.

We at The Douglas Post would like to offer our deepest condolences to the Bradley and O’Brien families on their recent loss. What is the delay in publishing the already ‘leaked’ Cork Docklands report?

Buttimer Fine Gael Cork South Central Senator, Jerry Buttimer, questioned the Government’s delay in publishing the Cork Docklands Development Forum report which he says has already been leaked to opposition politicians and a national newspaper. “The Government that has had 11 months to peruse, deliberate on and arrive at an appropriate response to the report which, I was informed last October, when I raised the issue during an Adjournment debate, was submitted in July 2008. Subsequently, I was told that an interdepartmental group would meet and publish a response to the completed report which until now been languishing in a departmental drawer. “Cork’s future growth rests on this report. Minister Gormley must come clean about what stage proceedings are at. Has the interdepartmental group met? What was the nature of the meeting? Has the group concluded its deliberations and has it reported to the Minister? “The development of the Cork Docklands is critical in terms of infrastructure and employment. Cork is the country's second city and, under the National Spatial Strategy, is a gateway city. This project has the potential to create in the region of 20,000 jobs in the city at a time when unemployment in the city is staggeringly high and through the construction of the eastern gateway bridge, the docklands would provide a vital stimulus to propel Cork forward. “This development would afford us an opportunity to regenerate Cork, the only city with a decreasing population. What is Minister Gormley shying away from? Is the Government putting investment in Cork on the long finger once again? If journalists can secure a copy of the report, why can it not be published by the Government? “At a time of economic recession, every opportunity must be taken to allow Cork to develop. This project is of paramount importance and investment is crucial. The Minister must publish the report at once and kick start rebirth of a failing Cork city.”

South Link Family Ties

family ties by Geraldine Blake

In Praise of the Humble Geranium You can’t beat a geranium for colour, pizzazz and downright cheerfulness. They are reliable, hardy and easy to grow. I met my first geranium in 1988 when I shared a flat with my brother in inner London. The flat was a complete dump but outside the window in the living room was a flower box with an almost dead geranium in it. It was one long, useless stalk but it was sitting in soil that had turned rock hard and with all the toxins of the city and obvious neglect, it did really well to keep going. I felt sorry for it, so I took to watering it everyday or when I remembered. Some months later, my efforts were rewarded when out of the end of the useless stalk, a tiny red bloom appeared. I was so proud of the little fella and felt gratified. I have been a fan of the brave geranium ever since. My husband hates them; he says their pong aggravates his hay fever. Nevertheless, shortly after we moved into the marital home - a glorified shoe box - I trotted down to the garden centre at the first opportunity and bought three pots of flaming red geraniums. I put my new treasures on the window ledge in the bathroom where they could enjoy the most sun. Hubbie wasn’t happy but his grumblings went unheeded. We were always getting locked out of our flat but luckily we lived on the ground floor and so we kept the tiny bathroom window slightly open at all times, confident that no passing burglar would attempt to climb through something so small. My husband, being a fair sized chunk of man, and me being a virtual dwarf, it was left up to me to do all the ‘breaking and entering.’ But that window was very small and there would be moments when I would get stuck and I’d panic thinking that I was going to plummet head first into the toilet bowl

which was directly underneath. One particular day, Hubbie rings me at work to tell me that he was at home but was locked out and would I be leaving anytime soon. Out of pure meanness, I told him that I didn’t have a key either and that I was damned if I was going to climb through that bloody window yet again. When I got home, Hubbie had shed as many of his clothes as was decently possible and was hanging out the window with one leg in and one leg out. “Mind my geraniums,” I barked at him and with sweat pouring from his brow, he very patiently plucked up each geranium from inside the window and handed them out to me. “Come to momma,” I crooned at my babies, and after I set them down gently on the ground, I turned back to my husband and told him that I had the key after all. He cursed me and after a few minutes when he managed to extricate himself from the window, with all his limbs intact, I smiled brightly at him and said “Did you enjoy that?” He grinned back and said, “Not as much as this!” and then stooping down, he plucked up the three geraniums and flung them across the car park. I managed to rescue the plants and most of the soil - the pots were smashed to bits – and they continued to thrive back on the bathroom shelf, despite their mauling.

Bad economic crisis made worse by Govt’s misguided policies

• MATURING BY DEGREES Children of Lilliput Montessori School, Douglas on their recent graduation day.

Taxi Company Launches Unique Fundraising Project for Charities, Schools and Voluntary Organisations. The Ace Taxi Group has launched a unique Community Fundraising initiative for Charities, Schools and Voluntary Organisations, in the Cork Area. The Project will operate using five simple steps as follows: a) A local Organisation registers their details with The Ace Taxi Group. b) They then circulate our phone numbers to their Members, Supporters, Staff, and Family Members, or to anybody who wishes to support their Organisation. c) People ring The Ace Taxi Group when they are booking a Taxi and mention their preferred Organisation. d) At the end of the journey the passenger pays the Standard Fare or in most cases less then the Standard Fare. e) 50c of every fare is then credited to the Organisations Account and at the end of every month, they receive a Cheque together with a computerised printout of all the passengers who supported the Initiative. “The beauty of this Initiative is in its simplicity,” said Brian Russell of The Ace Taxi Group. “ There is a minimum amount of effort at the outset, in terms of an Organisation registering their details with us and then circulating our contact numbers to their supporters and members. In doing so, they create an ongoing Income Stream at no cost whatsoever to themselves. The Fully Computerised Taxi Dispatch Technology installed at our Offices, allow us to process this Initiative seamlessly and efficiently” Organisations interested in benefiting from this Project can do so by contacting The Ace Taxi Group on 021-4311111 or by email at info@acetaxiscork.ie Further Details From : Brian Russell Ace Taxi Group 431111 087-2055895 brian@acetaxiscork.ie

The Fianna Fáil/Green Government is not up to the task of rescuing the economy and bringing Ireland back to growth. Speaking during a Dáil Debate on the economy last week I made the point that: ‘The economy is facing a downward economic spiral that has been accelerated by the Fianna Fáil/Green Government’s misguided policies’. The Government’s inept response has turned an economic downturn into a dangerous downward economic spiral. Its knee-jerk response to the unemployment crisis has been to increase taxes, increases that have been especially hard on low and middle income families. This has only succeeded in driving down consumer spending, putting massive pressure on Irish businesses and has inevitably led to further unemployment. The impact of the downturn could have been minimised if the Government had focused on creating and protecting jobs, retraining those on the live register and supporting small and medium businesses. It missed the opportunity and the damage has now been done, with unemployment now higher than 400,000 and rising. Cork has been hit very hard by the growth in unemployment with the number of people on the live register jumping from 19,552 in May 2008 to 39,941 in May 2009. This 104.3% increase is above the national average of a 96.7% increase. Fine Gael is the only Party to put forward comprehensive and practical policies on job creation and restoring economic growth. Our 18 point package to help Small & Medium Enterprises, and the Rebuilding Ireland economic stimulus package, set out in detail the steps that need to be taken on employment, restoring competitiveness, and focusing on training and helping businesses. Details of these policies can be found on my website www.deirdreclune. ie or on the Fine Gael website www.finegael.ie. In stark contrast to Fine Gael's positive proposals the current Fianna Fáil/Green Government has nothing positive to offer. To date the Government’s actions have only made a bad situation worse. The results of their misguided policy decisions can be seen in growing dole queues, closed businesses and reduced incomes The Dáil Debate last week revealed that Fianna Fáil and Green TDs are in denial about the damage their policies are doing to an already weak economy and unwilling to admit any responsibility for weakening that economy in the fist place.

remembering. Pete, who originates from Cork’s Northside, is very quick to remind us what life was like, when he was growing up in Cork, fifty years ago. Last February Pete became a member of the Douglas Writers Group and we got to see a very different side of this well know entertainer. Not alone is he a musician, he is also a short story writer and has recently released a nostalgic orientated CD, called “Stories from Cork”, all written and read by Pete himself. This week Pete has suprised us with one of his poems, in true balladeer style he unmasks, a familiar ignorance and injustice that is sometimes mistaken for progress. They Couldn’t See The View. They chopped a tree, the other day. They butchered it, in every way.

And they’ll just say ‘twas in our face And we couldn’t see the view. A tree that stood, year after year. An Giota Gaeilge "Foinse" ar lár? Táimíd go léir ag fulaingt beagáinín anois teacht an Chúlú Eacnamaíochta seo agus tá sé de dhualgas orainn bheith níos cúramaí lenár taoscán Euro maidir leis an liosta siopadóireachta, laethanta saoire, éadaí nua agus a leithéidí. Is maith an rud é sin sílim mar bhíomar ag dul thar fóir i ngnéithe áirithe dár saolta agus feicim anois go bhfuil i bhfad Eireann níos mó measa ag óg agus aosta ar an mhéid atá acu sa sparán agus a lán againn ag déanamh na mbéilí blasta sa bhaile i dteannta a chéile! Ar an dtaobh eile den scéal is léir go bhfuil brú ar theaghlaigh áirithe le clanna óga agus morgaiste ollmhór ar an ngualann agus gan dul as ag chuid acu, mar ní feidir leo a theach a dhíol ag an am seo. Chonaic sibh píosaí ar na pháipéirí faoin imni atá ag goilliúint ar Eagarthóir "Foinse" maidir le todhchaí an Nuachtáin céanna- bhuel is trua sin agus is olc an scéal é mar is é Foinse an t-aon nuachtán náisiunta na Gaeilge sa tír agus cé gurbh iad scéalta an Iarthair atá i gcinnlínte an Nuachtáin don chuid is mó- is tacaíocht agus Craoltóir na Gaeilge é. Tá súil agam go dtiocfaidh Eamon Ó Cuív i gcabhair orthu mar tá foinse na scéalta i "Foinse" bunaithe i gceartlár a dhúthaí fhéin i gConamara agus na háiteanna maguaird. Bhuel tá áthas orm nach bhfuil baol dá laghad ar thodhchaí an "Avondhu Press" in Oirthear Chorcaí,a bhris amach ar na chinnlínte i rith na seachtaine seo caite agus foireann scannánaíochta TG4 ag máirseáil isteach ina Sheomra Chomhairle lena gceamaraí agus úirlisí taifeadáin agus gach duine díobh ag moladh iarrachta an Avondhu ar son na teangan.Chuir mé in iúl dóibh láithreach go bhfuil an nuachtán seo mar Bhíobla an Chomhphobail mórthimpeall orainn agus a cháirde ! caithfidh to aontú liom go bhfuil an ceart agam !! Molaim obair an "Douglas Post" as an mhéid tacaíochta atá á thabhairt acu do chás na Gaeilge chomh maith agus tréaslaím leis an eagarthóir agus an foireann iomlán maidir leis an Bhronnadh ó Ghaeltaca ar an Luan seo caite. Ba mhór an ócáid é sin dóibh agus níl dabht ar bith ach go bhfuil a thuilleadh le teacht de bharr a gcuid oibre ar son na Gaeilge agus don comhphobal go forleathan mórthimpeall. Eilís Uí Bhriain

During my recent canvas I noted where footpaths needed to be repaired or replaced and have forwarded the list to the Area Engineer for inclusion on his programme of works. However, over the last number of years we have not had a Footpath programme which is something I believe is necessary so that we can make residents aware as work is undertaken. You will see from the Engineers reply that this possibility is now more remote than ever unfortunately. I believe that basic footpaths are a necessity not a luxury and will keep the matter to the forefront. An ad hoc approach is not appropriate. I also expressed my disbelief (many residents have also raised this with me) that an overrun should occur on Passage West to Rochestown Inn project. Overruns are not acceptable especially in the current economic climate. There is a fine footpath there now which very few use and unsafe or no footpaths where there is a high density of population and pedestrians. The mind boggles. "I have examined the list and confirm that we are aware of many of the problems that you refer to and they are on a list / schedule of footpath repair works that we would like to undertake. The following estate from you list have yet to be taken in charge by the County Council and I would recommend that the residents contact the developer and seek to have him resolve their concerns.

Landsborough Gardens – Not Taken In Charge A programme of works is due to get underway on Galways Lane soon. This work is being undertaken by a third party with he agreement of Cork County Council. However as you may be aware we do not receive a specific budget allocation for the provision of new or the repair of existing footpaths. This money is drawn form our general maintenance budget. This year the budget is significantly reduced this year and I do not anticipate being able to undertake any footpath repairs work in the short or medium term." I have put the Grange/Frankfield, Donnybrook, Douglas Rochestown Maryborough Hill list up on my web page and if I missed anywhere please email me to include. If I can help with this or any other issue please contact me at deirdreforde@eircom.net or 0879161952 Thur 25 Jun '09 - 15

HAY FEVER Hay fever, also called allergic rhinitis, causes cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose, congestion, sneezing and sinus pressure. But unlike a cold, hay fever isn't caused by a virus — it's caused by an allergic response to indoor or outdoor airborne allergens, such as pollen, dust mites or pet dander. Some people have hay fever year-round. For others, hay fever gets worse at certain times of the year, usually in the spring, summer or autumn. Hay fever affects about one in five people. Signs and symptoms of hay fever usually develop immediately after you're exposed to specific allergy-causing substances (allergens) and can include: runny nose and nasal congestion, watery or itchy eyes, sneezing and coughing, itchy nose, roof of mouth or throat, sinus pressure and facial pain, swollen, blue-colored skin under the eyes (allergic shiners) and finally a decreased sense of smell or taste. Hay fever symptoms that can interfere with your day-to-day activities and have an impact on your quality of life include: Sleeplessness, fatigue and irritability. Although hay fever can begin at any age, you're most likely to develop it during childhood or early adulthood. It's common for the severity of hay fever reactions to change over the years. For most people, symptoms tend to diminish slowly, often over decades. Hay fever is caused by a process called sensitization, your immune system mistakenly identifies a harmless airborne substance as something harmful. Your immune system then starts producing allergy-causing antibodies. The next time you come in contact with the substance, these antibodies recognize it and signal your immune system to release chemicals such as histamine into your bloodstream. These immune system chemicals cause a reaction that leads to the irritating signs and symptoms of hay fever. Hay fever can be triggered by either seasonal or year-round (perennial) allergens. Many people have allergy symptoms all year long, but their symptoms get worse during certain times of the year. There are a number of over-the-counter and prescription medications available that help relieve hay fever symptoms. They include pills, liquids, nasal sprays and eyedrops. Many people get the best relief from a combination of allergy medications. You may need to try several medications to identify what works best for you. Over-the-counter medications may be enough to relieve your symptoms; or, you may need a prescription from your doctor. There's no proven way to avoid getting hay fever — but you can prevent allergy symptoms by avoiding the things that trigger your reactions. While the evidence isn't clear yet, doctors think reducing a child's exposure to allergy-causing substances such as dust mites may help delay or prevent hay fever. This may be especially true in children with a family history of allergies. For more information on treatments and preventative methods, contact Garvan at Lynchs Pharmacy on 021-4366923.

Hair Talk By Susan of Artisan

Hot summer days and frizzy hair Summer is here and who wants to avoid frizzy hair,. So come on girls lets start washing that hair By following my 3 step programme below will ensure the hot summer sun will not add that unnatural frizz to your hair. What could possibly go wrong with washing your hair since we have being doing it all our lives. Prior to washing your hair insure all tangles are combed out of the hair this will ensure the hair washes easily and tangles will not worsen. Thoroughly wet the hair, before cleansing with Kerastase Bain Oleo-Relax which is used to smooth and discipline dry frizzy unmanageable hair. Rinse thoroughly and lightly towel dry before apply your conditioner I would recommend your second Kerastase product Masque OleoRelax which is a smoothing masque to discipline/condition dry frizzy unmanageable hair. Leave conditioner in a minimum of 5 mins before rinsing off. Finally using Serum Oleo-Relax a smoothing Serum, 2 -3 drops to mid lengths and ends of hair will ensure that sleek summer blow dry is easy to achieve. Tip of the week Hair we wear every day should be looked after so treat your hair to a once a week treatment. Feel free to call into our salon in Grange or morris house to discuss your hair type and find the perfect treatment for you.

Midleton Transition Town

to advertise in

Early in summer 2008 a group of individuals got together to see what they and others could do to help themselves and the people Midleton area to cope with the changes they saw happening all round them. Higher oil prices, slacker business, increasing unemployment and the reality of the high dependence on imported oil, food and goods were all making life more difficult for everyone. They understood that to be prepared for what ever changes lie ahead would be better than doing nothing. It was decided to start a Transition Town in Midleton.

087 1341 491

The huge advantage that a Transition Town has over other community self help groups is that there is "The Transition Handbook". This manual was written by Rob Hopkins when he founded the very first Transition Town in Kinsale. Now it is being used all over the world in the 174 registered transition initiatives and an uncounted number, like Midleton, who are not yet official. Community groups and individuals are taking the handbook, and inspired by its ideas and stories about how they can help ourselves, by working together to meet at least some of our own needs. This will strengthen the local community to better weather the economic, social, financial and environmental upheaval that the world is undergoing. A winter program was drawn up, starting with a 'Grow Your Own' stand at the autumn Midleton Food Festival, followed by a showing of Al Gore's 'An Inconvenient Truth about how our oil supply is dwindling and our carbon output and global climate changes are increasing. To get over the bad news, two inspiring films, 'A Convenient Truth' and 'The Power of Survival' were shown. The first describes the progress made towards better lives for the people of the Brazilian city, Curitiba. The courageous city council completely revolutionised public transport, public housing, waste collection and the cleaning up the shanty towns and litter on an absolute shoe string. The Cuba film, on the other hand, described what the people of Cuba did when their oil supply from the USSR ran out in the 1990's. The country was facing economic chaos and starvation, but through their own ingenious efforts they survived.

Home & Garden

As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower Garden Start thinking about ordering spring-flowering bulbs. Lift tulips once foliage has died down, and dry off the bulbs. Sow hardy annuals for autumn colour, in a nursery bed or cold frame. Start taking semi-ripe cuttings of shrubs and root in a cold frame. Watch out for black spot and mildew on roses, and spray promptly with fungicide. Start feeding hanging baskets and other containers 6 weeks after planting.

Lawns & Hedges If the weather turns hot and dry remove the grass box from mowers and raise the height of the cut slightly. Greenhouse Pinch out the growing tips of tomatoes in pots and growing bags after four trusses. In hot weather leave the greenhouse doors open, but net against birds if there are fruits ripening inside. Pot up freesias for indoor flowers in winter, and stand pots outdoors until October. Sow more basil if earlier plants look like flowering.

Water Garden Aerate ponds with a hosepipe if fish are seen gasping at the surface

Kitchen Garden Sow oriental brassicas direct or in a nursery bed. Make a last sowing of a small early carrot variety. Summer prune cherries and plums. Prop up laden plum branches to prevent breakage. Cut dill, fennel and coriander seed heads as they turn colour, and hang up in paper bags to dry.

In General Mulch wall plants and others in very dry positions, after rain or a good watering after summer showers / storms, check for scorched shoots, signs of fireblight, on Rosaceae shrubs such as pears, pyracantha and cotoneaster

Ballycotton Lifeboats, 150 Years of Gallantry Ballycotton RNLI lifeboat station launches a book on its history entitled Ballycotton Lifeboats, 150 Years of Gallantry, by Nicholas Leach and Brendan O’Driscoll On 1 July at 8 pm Mr. Derek Davis will launch a new book on Ballycotton Lifeboats in the Bayview Hotel, Ballycotton. All are welcome. A new book telling the story of 150 years of Ballycotton lifeboats, the rescues, the people and boats, is being prepared for publication on 1 July 2009. Ballycotton lifeboat station is one of the most famous in Ireland and one of the best known of any in the whole lifeboat service. First established in 1858 the station and its volunteer crews have a long and proud history of rescuing those in peril off the coast of County Cork. The first lifeboat was powered by oars and sail and was launched from a carriage. Several rowing and sailing lifeboats were operated until, in September 1930, the first motor lifeboat, Mary Stanford, was sent to the station. This powerful twin-engined boat was involved in the outstanding event in the station’s history, the Gold Medal rescue of the crew of the Daunt Rock lightvessel on 11 February 1936, for which Coxswain Patrick Sliney was awarded a Gold medal, with Silver and Bronze Medals going to his crew.

The lightvessel had broken from her moorings in gale force winds, very heavy seas, rain and snow. When the lifeboat put out she met seas so mountainous that spray was flying over the lantern of the lighthouse, 196ft high. The lifeboat did not return to her station for three days and was on service for 63 hours, during which time her crew had only three hours sleep. For 25 hours they had no food and all came back suffering from colds and salt water burns. The casualty’s crew of eight were rescued after the lifeboat went alongside the plunging vessel more than a dozen times. Many other notable medal-winning rescues have been performed by the Ballycotton lifeboatmen, notably Bronze and Silver medal-winning services in 1941 and 1943 which saw Coxswain Sliney become one of the most decorated lifeboatmen of all time. With such a rich and interesting history this new book has more than enough to interest every reader. It provides a complete up-to-date account of the station’s 150-year history, from the early days to the present modern station and its Trent class lifeboat, along with descriptions of all the outstanding rescues. All the crew are volunteers and the people of Ballycotton have great feelings of pride, tradition and service for their lifeboat and lifeboat station. Nicholas Leach has written extensively on the lifeboat service in Britain and Ireland, including a book on a century of RNLI Motor Lifeboats in 2005 and a history of the lifeboats of Rosslare Harbour in 2007. Brendan O'Driscoll wrote and published a history of Youghal lifeboat in 1999. The authors Nicholas Leach can be contacted at Nicholas.leach@ virgin.net and Brendan O’Driscoll on 086-1686992 or Harbourview2003@eircom.net.

They left the stage after 55mins but returned after a couple of minutes to play a 20minute encore consisting of trade mark tunes like “Smack My Bi**h Up” before they finished the with Peter Bowles concert in fine form with another old school floor filler, “Outer Space”. All in all, a very enjoyable gig. After the Prodigy I headed into Savoy to check out Leeroy Jenkins, ex Last week I wrote about David Guetta’s new single with the powerful Prodigy member, who was playing a DJ set there. The place had a good Kelly Rowland and how I thought it would definitely make it to the top crowd obviously containing a lot of people that had been at the Prodigy in 3, last week it was at 36, this week its number one, I must be doing the Marquee an hour or two beforehand. The atmosphere was also pretty something right! high spirited here. Leeroy’s style of set is that of break-beat and drum&bass, Moving on now to Prodigy’s gig last week in the Marquee; playing tunes like that of the Prodigy, Pendulum and the odd 80s remix. The band warming up were Noise Control, a Dublin based outfit similar in After the gig I caught up with him for a few words. Leeroy left the Prodigy style to the Prodigy themselves, they were well able to handle the thouin the 90’s having started with them as a dancer, he was always producing sands waiting for Prodigy and banged out some great tunes to pump up outside of the bands time and decided to pursue his own solo career eventhe crowd. Noise Control left the stage at 8:30 to a seriously loud cheer tually, I don’t like to speculate on how successful that idea was because he from the crowd, almost as load as the deafening cheer that greeted Prodseems to live in the shadow of the Prodigy to this day. igy on stage a suspense filled 50minutes later. There was close to 4000 in To talk to he seemed uninterested and un-phased by his gig at Savoy, to be attendance going on a hunch. People of all shapes and sizes sporting evebrushed off as a walk in the park perhaps. I started with “How has music rything from luminous camouflage combat pants and tank tops to glow changed for you over the years?”. He grinned and said, “It got louder”, sticks going through ear piercing’s descended on the Marquee, I think its not satisfied in the least I persisted until I got a sustainable answer, he went fair to say that a lot of people in the standing area were holders of seated on then to explain how he thought music had gone full circle since the 80s tickets but couldn’t help but head for the mash pit when seduced by the and now we’re at an age of artists that sample music of days gone by. So I sat up the back hillbillies! After some more helpful encouragement I managed to coax out of the stand opposite the stage and took in all that was on offer. They a few band names like the Beatles and found that he had a liking for Punk opened with “The Worlds On Fire”, which was followed by a Prodigy music in particular. We went on to discuss how he felt crowds these days classic, “Breathe”. After that they played hugely popular “Omen” from have become much younger, when asked to describe a highlight of his catheir new album “Invaders Must Die”. I must say the highlight of the gig reer to date he simply replied “I haven’t had it yet”, this was the final straw for me was the lighting, pardon the pun. It was amazing for me so I decided to rap things up on the classic “How do you find and really added to the show. Lee Midsummer Regatta – Competition and Family Fun Day

Passage West GAA

by George Thompson With the return and success of last year’s event, the Lee Rowing Club will once again host the Lee Midsummer Regatta on Sunday 28th of June on the Marina and is expected to attract rowers from all over Ireland. There will be over 60 races on the day of the Regatta, and off-river activities will entertain all, young and old, for what is being hailed as a great family fun day. Lee Rowing Club was founded in 1850 and the club has a long history of successful competition in regattas throughout the country. The inaugural Lee Regatta was held in 1971, a Schools Regatta with senior and junior schools partaking and in 1973 the first Rowing Union Championship was held during the Lee Regatta, which drew crews from as far afield as Coleraine and Portora. In 1988 the club moved into their new Lee Rowing Clubhouse at ‘The Marina’ on the banks of the Lee! While membership declined during the 90’s, there has been an explosion of interest from young people in taking up rowing in recent years, and early risers who walk, jog and cycle on ‘The Marina’ may well have noticed the increase in activity on the River Lee as dedicated rowers prepare to launch and are on the water from 7.30am. The clubhouse in recent years has had a much needed facelift, and the red and black façade of Lee Rowing Club can now be spotted among the trees from the Lower Glanmire road. With Páirc Uí Chaoimh and the surrounding Marina providing an attractive backdrop, late spring each year heralds the appearance of rowers training on the river Lee. The stretch of river from the Pier Head down to the City Hall is occupied by boys and girls honing their skills under the watchful eye of their coaches pedalling on bikes along the Marina as regatta season commences just after Easter each year, and runs until early August. Lee Rowing Club has enjoyed a welcome return to competitive rowing thanks to the dedication of its members and their coaches with this dedication being reflected in the selection by the I.A.R.U. of Shane Ryan and Joe Kearney of Lee Rowing Club to row for Ireland in the Coupe • Above- Members of the Lee Rowing De La Jeunesse. Joe and Shane Club in training on the 'Marina'. will row as part of the coxed Pic:George Thompson four and the men's Junior 8 with oars men from Portora R.C. and St Joseph's B.C. The Coupe De La Jeunesse, otherwise known as the Junior European Rowing Championships, which was held in Cork at the National Rowing Centre in 2008, will be held this year in Vichy, France from the 31st of July to the 2nd of August, while Lee Rowing Club’s Junior 15 Men’s quad crew have had numerous successes this season in National competition and are tipped for greater things with the Junior 14 Women’s Coxed Quad also rowing to success of late also. Douglas GAA Douglas 2-08 v Youghal 2-08 For the second consecutive year, the clash between Douglas and Youghal finished in a draw in the Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship. Last Friday nights encounter in Lisgoold was a tense affair which left the spectators waiting until the final moments for an outbreak of drama to rival last years’ episode. Douglas, sponsored by Ryan’s SuperValu, set the pace in the first half with man-of-thematch Cormac Dineen outstanding in defence. Time and tide wait for no man and Paddy Barry may not be the rampaging midfielder of 2000 anymore but prowling on the edge of

the square, he was happy to shuffle with menace to the corners and carve out openings for his team mates. In the twentieth minute Colin O’Mahony was the beneficiary as he pounced on Barry’s crossfield pass and pointed for Douglas. Meanwhile, Barry Fitzgerald, Mark Collins Stephen Moylan and Eoin Cadogan raised white flags. In the twenty third minute Douglas turned defence into attack to score the crucial score of the first half. James Moylan gained possession from an Eoin Cadogan delivery, raced towards goal and smacked the sliotar into the roof of the net. Richard Murphy pointed two frees to leave Douglas leading by 1-6 to 0-4 at the interval. As Douglas prepared for the second half they

were mindful of how last year they surrendered a ten point interval advantage and were left clinging on for a draw at full time. Ten minutes into the second half Douglas’ lead was cut to a point when Kenneth Walsh kicked the sliotar past Brian Boyle and into the Douglas net. Douglas were on the ropes but then the mercurial Barry had the vision to pick out substitute Odhrán Mulrooney who pointed. Leigh Desmond pointed for Youghal and Douglas promptly introduced the big guns Coveney, Richard Harris and Gary McLoughlin. As the game entered the final minute and with the side’s level, commotion in the Youghal goalmouth concluded with Paddy Barry whipping the sliotar to the net. It appeared that Douglas had secured victory but Damien Ring saved Youghal with a late equalising goal. Douglas selector Pat Cotter was a picture of utter dejection as he sank to his knees with the impact of the late sucker punch lodged in the pit of his stomach. However, in the cold light of day when he and his colleagues gather to reflect on their sides’ performance it will be reasonable for them to conclude that a draw was a fair outcome. Meanwhile, on Sunday 28th June Douglas play Doheny’s in the senior football championship. Throw in is at 3.30pm in Cloughduv.

Change in leadership at Grangevale At the 57th annual general meeting of the club, Seán McCarthy stepped down from the position of chairman after four years at the helm of Grangevale AFC. Reflecting on his tenure, McCarthy commented that despite the acquisition of two league titles during his reign, he derived equal satisfaction from the restructuring and rejuvenation of the club which has positioned Grangevale in a prosperous position to meet current demands and future challenges. McCarthy thanked the members for providing him with the opportunity to serve Grangevale and extended best wishes to his successor. Given that honorary president Donie Cronin was on sabbatical at his retreat in the Kerry Mountains, the election of officers was supervised by Dave Williamson. Thomas Foley was elected the club’s new chair-

man while Patrick O’Sullivan and Dave O’Sullivan remain in their roles of secretary and treasurer, respectively. Foley has been central to Grangevale matters for a decade and his appointment to the position of chairman ensures stability and continuity. Joining Shaun McCormack and Eric Maher on the committee are Ian Doyle and Kevin Corcoran. As well as being a renowned singer, local man Doyle brings a wealth of experience following a recent successful spell as manager of Rylane. Since his recent relocation to Grange, Doyle has hovered on the periphery of the Grangevale AUL 2 winning side, but now that his role has been formalised his addition could yet prove to be the most judicious signing of the season. Meanwhile, Corcoran is a controversial figure with a colourful past who was often criticised for his lacklustre disposition on the pitch during his brief playing career with Grangevale. However, Corcoran’s encyclopedic knowledge of the game is legendary and given that he is never short of an opinion is a welcome addition to the club’s committee. LADIES REMAIN UNBEATEN

Irish Examiner 0 Crosshaven Ladies 1 The fact that Crosshaven have played 3 games in 7 days seemed to catch up on them last week when they stumbled to victory against a side they had beaten 6-0 just a week previous. Michelle O'Connell was the hero on the night with her first goal of the season which kept Crosshaven's unbeaten League/Cup run going. Crosshaven AFC is also proud to announce that 3 of our girls have been selected to represent Munster in the Gaynor Cup Finals in the University of Limerick in July. The players are Megan O'Keeffe, Gillian Crowley & Emily Phelan.

ALL HANDS ON DECK

Volunteers from the club were working up a sweat in the warm sun last Saturday when they started work clearing the area around the clubhouse to facilitate future developments. G.A.A. FOCUS Snippets from the Local and National Scene By Pat Harrington

Cork vs. Kerry Kerry started the better side but Cork soon came to grips with their opponents. The Rebels dominated midfield and owned the ball for considerable periods. The ball was hitting the inside line very slowly; that said the movement inside was not great. Pierce O’Neill playing at centre forward was giving Aidan O’Mahony a torrid time. Cork hit the upright, O’Neill careened through the middle and missed a great chance of a goal. Kerry were made to look very poor at times and Cork were well worth their five-point lead going into the break. When

Galvin went down in a heap the referee immediately showed Red to Noel O’Leary causing a so-called Kerry supporter behind me to scream with delight (way over the top). Little did he realize that Galvin would also be ordered off the field. Our tormentor from the Kingdom got some holly from the Cork crowd. Kerry then revamped their team – Moran to midfield and Griffin to centre back. These moves paid dividends as Kerry stormed forward like a hurricane kicking five points without reply. Cork were reeling as the Kingdom won all breaking balls at midfield. The Cork half forwards, especially those on the wings seemed non-existent. The Rebels in one of their rare attacks were awarded a penalty which was duly converted. This to me was the turning point of the game. Anthony Lynch was absolutely superb in defence – playing from the front. Goulding and Donnacha O’Connor took up good positions and were fed excellent ball. At this stage Cork were running riot and the Kerry contingent began to leave in droves. It was a pity the gates weren’t locked as it would have been nice to make our neighbours suffer for a change. After the game I heard a Kerryman speaking on his mobile, as he stated that it was time to rebuild since some of their players had seen their day. Cork may need to assess one or two players who have failed to ignite in the two games against Kerry. Job done – let’s take it one step at a time.

Congratulations. Well done to the Douglas Feile camogie team on wining the All-Ireland title over last weekend. Congratulations to Stephen Moylan and Theo Cullinane who were on the Cork Intermediate panel that qualified for the Munster Hurling final against Waterford. More next week, Pat

Douglas Youth Action plea… D’YA think u can help?! Douglas Youth Action (DYA) is a Foroige youth club which caters for teenagers from 12 to 17 in the greater Douglas area. It was originally set up by Sonya Coakley-Hanan with the help of councillor Deirdre Forde and the local Community Gardai in response to the rise in unsociable behaviour and lack of facilities/activities for teenagers in the locality. The club, which is supervised by Garda vetted volunteers, first opened in October 08 and was based in a unit in St. Patrick’s Mills which we were kindly allowed to use by the Murphy Family on a temporary basis. The club quickly became very popular and before long had reached membership of over fifty young people and had a waiting list of approximately 20. Unfortunately we had to vacate the premises in December as it was leased to a business and so the club became homeless. We were offered another unit in the mills for a 2 year period, which we hoped to renovate and use as a base. We had huge plans for this building including a sports area and a café, however estimates for the work that would need to be done in order for this to happen and promised funding that fell through, meant that the building was not a viable option. At the moment all of the equipment/furniture that was kindly donated to the club is sitting idol in this unit waiting for a permanent home. Since February the club has been trying to operate from various temporary and largely unsuitable venues which has been difficult and disruptive to it’s running. We have now closed for the summer but will reopen in September and badly need a home. The club leaders have worked tirelessly to find a permanent base for the club and in recent days a premises has come to light that would be ideal for the club. It is to this end that we are appealing to any local business people or possible sources of funding to help us find the €9000 we need to cover the first years rent of this unit. The acquisition of this premises would, not only give us a permanent base, but would enable us to deliver a far greater programme for the young people of Douglas on a much larger scale. We would be able to cater for far greater numbers and on a much more frequent basis. Since the club opened, members have taken part in a huge variety of activities including, fund raising, talent show, craft fair, sports, self defence, Film making, orienteering, circus skills, dance, makeover night, playstation tournaments tidy towns and much more. It also gives the young people a place to belong, a safe and supervised place where they can congregate and feel welcome. We believe that this project is a hugely beneficial for the youth but also for the community as a whole, we aim to provide positive role models and mentors for the young people and foster better understanding and mutual respect between the generations, we seek to provide positive learning experiences for our members and actively promote and celebrate their talents and achievements. If you or your company feels that they would be able to helps us or would like more information, please contact Sonya on 087 1207153 or email; kick-ass-coakley@ hotmail.com
