The Word

by George Thompson - Editor

A 420 billion euro scandal!

It’s that time of year again as Jazz Fever hits Cork for the annual October weekend music festival. Pubs in and around Douglas will have a full programme of entertainment and bands of all descriptions – check our advertising and entertainment pages for full details. No doubt many Leesiders will migrate to other centres for the weekend so whatever you are up to this weekend do enjoy and drive safely.

I have commented on numerous occasions that Ireland’s maritime resources are not being explored enough in a way that could make us one of the richest nations in the World - I am speaking of Oil and Gas. Our sea area is three times the size of our land mass – in fact our Slán territorial waters are one of the largest in Europe. It’s no secret that oil and gas have been George Thompson discovered off our Atlantic shelf over the past 15 years with the government’s estimate on these Editor reserves put at 420 billion euro (probably worth much more as the price of oil rises). Yet previous ministers and successive governments have literally given away the rights to these resources. Laws were changed in favour of oil companies who will own 100% of the oil and gas they find in Irish waters, they pay no royalties on it and can write off 100% of their expenses against tax, have profits taxed at 25% compared to an International average of almost 70% for oil producing countries and export our oil and gas resources outside the state - while the Irish population is asked over and over again to tighten their belts for the good of the country. Who’s laughing at who??? The powers that be gave away our fishing rights – what next? Our Navy is under strength, under manned and under equipped yet, while the service is highly regarded as one of the most professional the world over, it is expected to patrol an area with resources equivalent to the Gardaí having one squad car to patrol the whole country. The combined government, ministers and officials need to pull their heads out of their asses and recognise the true financial potential of the Country’s natural resources. A 420 Billion euro injection into this nation’s economy wouldn’t log sort out the misery we’ve had to endure in the past few years. • Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan pictured with his manager Packie Collins and

Letters to the Editor frontdesk@douglaspost.ie

We’d love to hear from you. If you have any news, views or issues you’d like to see covered, write to the Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas West, Cork or by e-mail to frontdesk@douglaspost.ie Please include your name and address and a contact number. Letters may be edited due to space considerations.

The Politics of Secrecy Dear Editor Over the past year or so Government Ministers made secret deals with the Banks and then presented them to the public. The recent episode with the Speaker of the Dail we heard numerous T.D’s asking for issues with the Speaker to be held behind closed doors. This was followed by Enda Kenny the leader of Fine Gael calling for a secret vote to elect the Speaker of the Dáil. If the Dail votes in secret on any issue, the citizens will have no way of finding out how their local TD voted and would be unaccountable. It’s time to call a halt to the politics of secrecy Yours Sincerely J. Foley Shamrock Lawn

Pinecroft Development Dear Editor, As a householder in Grange since 1977, I’d like to comment on the negative publicity in the Douglas Post over recent months regarding the proposed development on the Pinecroft site. The first thing to clear away is the notion that it is not in keeping with the surrounding residential area. Progress involves change, and Grange is sorely in need of a significant building of architectural merit to bring it into the mood of the 21st century, let alone the additional facilities this venture will bring. Further shops will add to the nucleus of what would then become the identifiable central point of Grange. What is Grange at the moment? A straggle of houses and a strangely haphazard main road give no definition of Grange being a place. The plans look very attractive and very effectively corner the site, making efficient use of space. Glass, steel and stone claddings (similar to the Douglas Shopping Centre) are lovely to look at and moves us on from the austerity of Aldi or the quaint retrospective vernacular of Supervalue. A degree of boldness is needed if Grange is not to be held back. The oft-quoted traffic problem already exists and requires a master plan for the area, not a kneejerk reaction to the additional small amount that this development would create. There is plenty of room to separate the through and local traffic along the main road for example, and this is the way to think. Finally, the new Medical Centre further up the road is another stunning contemporary building, already setting the pace, which will help to bring an up-market image to Grange. The proposed Pinecroft development would undoubtedly help to consolidate Grange as a desirable residential location, and commands more local support than your headlines suggest. Yours faithfully Ronald Lees Grange Heights Douglas.

Open letter to politicians:

In an open letter to TDs and Senators, FLAC states that current government solutions to the mortgage arrears crisis are not enough and urges public representatives to press for action that can have immediate effect for people in debt. "The range of options needs to include money and legal advice, capacity to remodel and revise existing loans to take account of changed circumstances and reckless lending, moratoriums where appropriate. All of these changes need to be properly regulated, and the courts must be able to impose terms if parties can’t agree. When the negotiations with the banks cease at the end of the NAMA legislation, the chance to develop these remedies may be entirely lost." The numbers contacting FLAC’s telephone information and referral line with debt problems have quadrupled this year and twice as many people are visiting its advice centres with debt issues. Noeline Blackwell, FLAC Director General 086-813 9089/ 01-874 5690 E mail: flacmedia@flac.ie

Draining Africa ! Dear Editor The latest African leader to embrace the Trojan horse that China has placed in the heart of the Third World is Rwandan President Paul Kagame. In the same week that China gave 2bn to Ghana, Mr Kagame has singled Beijing out for high praise for the way it does business in Africa. On the other hand, he is heavily critical of the West for basing its relations with the continent on aid. Mr Kagame’s self-serving cynical posturing would be laughable were the consequences of China’s predatory interests in the continent, not so grave. China’s chequebook does not differentiate between the corrupt and the clean. Its interests are purely selfish. In its insatiable hunger for resources it is utterly indiscriminate with whom it does business, buying up what ever it can. There is no conditionality or oversight concerning its loans, thus corrupt leaders can carry on leeching on their people without fear of the consequences. Any attempts at establishing good governance - or in rooting out corruption which costs the continent 140bn annually - thus become redundant. The truth is that if the Chinese continue to drain Africa of its scant wealth then the continent will be left a dust bowl, and any prospect of sufficiency will be wiped out. China has foreign reserves of 1950bn to buy what it needs. In contrast the poor of Africa have nothing. The West can not stay silent as the poor are sold out by their unscrupulous leaders to the highest bidder. John O’Shea, GOAL, PO BOX 19, Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin

senator Jerry Buttimer Constituency Office 4 A Glasheen Road, Cork. CLINIC TIMES:

Dear Editor As a leading legal rights group we are calling on all members of the Oireachtas to take immediate action on behalf of those who cannot meet their mortgage repayments, following a deluge of calls to our telephone helpline from people desperately worried that they risk losing their homes. Calling all Past Students - Famous Cork School To Launch Anniversary Book Cork’s Coláiste Chríost Rí, one of the country’s most famous secondary schools, is about to launch a comprehensive account of its history in a new book to commemorate its 50th anniversay. The publication which contains over 800 photographs of school life throughout the decades will be launched by past-student Minister Micheál Martin on Friday 13th November at 7:30pm in the school's newly built sports complex. The contents of the book have been carefully selected from the school’s archives and also contains newspaper clippings and articles from former pupils, teachers and Principals. It will be sold on the night of the launch and in book stores throughout the city for €15. The school is encouraging all past-students and staff, their families and others associated with the school to come along on the evening for a historical night out. To coincide with the book launch, a large photographic exhibition will also be on display in the school. Organised by decade, pictures depicting the 'Secondary Top' in Scoil Chríost Rí in the 1950's right up to images of the present day will be displayed and are sure to provide subject matter to enable past-pupils from each decade to reconnect and reminisce. The Coláiste Chriost Rí Past-Pupils Union will also be re-launched on the night and will be selling tickets to a gala 50th anniversary dinner to be held on the 12th February 2010.

Douglas Community Association (With Helen Fox, PRO Douglas Community Association) Last Sunday morning, I visited the community park, to see how the Park was holding up since the big push to have everything ready for the Tidy Towns Competition. I was pleasantly surprised. The rock garden area looked beautiful; it was completely revamped in Spring, and the fuschias looked particularly striking, dripping with bright red, dainty fairy-like flowers. I noted the Tidy Towns judges remarked on the park that ‘it was a great amenity, well kept with fine trees and good seating.’ The judges commented on the overall ‘wonderful houses in the Douglas area which have spectacular lawns, hedges, trees, flowers and shrubs. The gardens of the two bungalows opposite St. Columba’s church are absolutely stunning at the moment, take a look if you are out for a walk.

A derelict building in the Kiltegan Estate is becoming a major problem for local residents. The site of what was the Essentials Shop has become a derelict site over the last two years. Local residents have been in constant contact with both local Cllr.Deirdre Forde and myself for well over a year expressing their concerns about the worsening condition of the site. They are worried that the site which is already an eyesore is becoming a target for vandals. After highlighting the matter with Cork County Council they undertook the investigations necessary to identify the owners of the site. In March 2009 they served a notice on the owners and in April they entered the site to carry out essential works to make the site safer. Dispite the County Council's action the issue has remained unresolved and the situation at the site has only gotten worse over the last few months. Cllr Forde and myself have continued to stay in close contact with the County Council and the local residents to try to resolve the issue. Progress has been delayed because of ownership issues. The site has now been put up for auction and this will take place on the 11th November 2009 at the Imperial Hotel. It is hoped that once the ownership issue has been clarified the derelict condition of the site will receive the urgent action it requires. I will continue to remain in close contact with the Council and the local residents until the condition of this site is resolved.

There was a gentleman at the Bring Centre, busily putting his glass bottles in the appropriate bins. I had a look around this area and found someone had dumped a plastic bag full of household rubbish. It was brought up at our last meeting, that there is ongoing abuse of this very useful facility, by a tiny minority of people who think nothing of dumping their personal rubbish at this site. It was also disappointing to see graffiti sprayed on the wall of the centre, near the pre-school area and discouraging for the small but hard-working group of people who struggle to keep everything looking well.

Young @ Heart by Phil Goodman

A new scheme to pay for nursing home care begins this month. There are a lot of different opinions on this scheme which is set up by the state to provide financial support to those who need long term nursing home care. It replaces the nursing home subvention scheme which paid a basic of 300€ towards the cost of nursing home care, under fair deal you pay 80% of your disposable income towards nursing home care. This income can include any earnings, pensions, social welfare benefits and allowances, rental income etc you must also pay up to 15% of the value of your home will be used to cover your nursing home bill regardless of the amount of time spent in the nursing home, whether you are better off under the fair deal scheme or the subvention scheme depends on how well off you are. If you get in to a public nursing home before the fair deal starts then you’ll pay a maximum of €153.25 for your care. If you get into a public nursing home after October the 27th you will have to pay 80% of your income each week as well as 15% of the value of your home when you die. It will be interesting to see what happens in the coming months, but I think it favours the less well off. Something we can all look forward to in Douglas library is Luke Philpotts art exhibition , Luke is a talented artist as well as being a beautiful singer who represented Douglas in the over 60’s exhibition which takes place from 3rd to the 14th of November, “not to be missed”. The second term of “log on and learn” will start on the 27th of October, 13 older people on each course. Many thanks to Douglas Community School for providing the opportunity for our older people in the community to learn how to use a computer. It has made a significant difference to so many of our members and it has enriched their lives in so many ways. I expect to see you all in your Halloween costumes on the 27th of October in St Columbus Hall where there is great prizes to be won. Also there is great fun every Thursday with the indoor bowling we now have sizes 2, 3 and 4 in the bowls which makes it easier if your joints are a bit stiff, so come along and take part. Castlemartyr Resort to Host Artist Exhibition Martha Cashman’s ‘Ladles, Spoons, Stirrers, Spreaders, Spades, Forks and Shovels’ To be Launched by Food Expert Regina Sexton Opening on Friday 23rd October 2009, the Castlemartyr Resort, Co. Cork will host renowned ceramic Irish artist Martha Cashman’s exhibition of her latest works titled ‘Ladles, Spoons, Stirrers, Spreaders, Spades, Forks and Shovels’, taking inspiration from table and garden implements. This very special exhibition is free to the public, from 24th October to 10th December at the Castlemartyr Resort, Co. Cork, part of the Dromoland Collection of Hotels. The Exhibition will be opened by renowned food historian, food writer and cook Regina Sexton. She has published widely at both an academic and popular level. She is author of A Little History of Irish Food, which was made into an eight-part television series by RTÉ. The pieces are based on kitchen and gardening utensils made in a mixed media of paper porcelain, woven wire, carved Irish birch and ash. Welcoming Martha Cashman and her Exhibition to the Castlemartyr Resort, General Manager Andrew Phelan said: “We are delighted to have such a recognised artist exhibit in the Castlemartyr Resort and are proud to welcome her and her awardwinning work to her native East Cork. Martha’s unique interpretation of kitchen and garden implements are the perfect complement to Castlemartyr’s exquisite natural surroundings and unparalleled food at our Bell Tower Restaurant. We look forward to our guests enjoying this Exhibition during their stay at the Castlemartyr Resort”. Cashman said: “Taking influences from my rural background and the close associations of my family to the seasons, the earth and food; my father was a market gardener and my uncle was the last blacksmith in Youghal, East Cork. The series of porcelain pieces, hung in framed groups or plainly hung on the wall from rusted nails, pay homage to the understanding held by a local community that led me to appreciate and respect the land we took from daily. The pieces record the teachings and the lost traditional rural style of living in Ireland”.

used over time. This is why many people with chronic headaches look to the more natural (and very often more effective) solution of chiropractic care. Doctors of Chiropractic realize that the nerve system is what controls every function in the body, and that a crucial relationship exists between the alignment of the bones in the neck and headaches and migraines. The atlas is the first bone in your neck, commonly called C1. This bone is a transition segment between the skull and the spine and weighs approximately 2 ounces. But this little bone has the big job of supporting the skull, encircling and protecting the brainstem/ spinal cord area, and protects two arteries (the vertebral arteries) that control blood and oxygen flow to a good portion of

mentioned earlier, this imbalance can have devastating effects to our lives and loved ones who are around us as we suffer. The good news is, once the bones of the spine are re-aligned through a series of chiropractic adjustments, pressure on the spinal cord and nerves is removed, normal function is restored to the tissues, and headaches and migraines vanish. Millions of headache and migraine sufferers around the world have benefited from this approach to restoring proper function to their body. If you are currently suffering, and are fed up with just temporarily treating your headaches as you wait for the next one, call us. We can help.

Parkinson's disease Parkinson's disease develops gradually, often starting with a barely noticeable tremor in just one hand. But while tremor may be the most well-known sign of Parkinson's disease, the disorder also commonly causes a slowing or freezing of movement. Friends and family may notice that your face shows little or no expression and your arms don't swing when you walk. Speech often becomes soft and mumbling. Parkinson's symptoms tend to worsen as the disease progresses.

Causes

Many symptoms of Parkinson's disease result from the lack of a chemical messenger, called dopamine, in the brain. This occurs when the specific brain cells that produce dopamine die or become impaired. But researchers still aren't certain about what sets this chain of events in motion. Some theorize that genetic mutations or environmental toxins may play a role in Parkinson's disease.

Tests and diagnosis

No definitive tests exist for Parkinson's disease, so it can be difficult to diagnose, especially in the early stages. And parkinsonism — the symptoms of Parkinson's disease — can be caused by many other types of problems. A diagnosis of Parkinson's disease is based on your medical history and a neurological examination. As part of your medical history, your doctor will want to know about any medications you take and whether you have a family history of Parkinson's. The neurological examination includes an evaluation of your walking and coordination, as well as some simple hand tasks. Your initial response to Parkinson's treatment can be dramatic. Over time, however, the benefits of drugs frequently diminish or become less consistent, although symptoms can usually still be fairly well controlled. Your doctor may recommend lifestyle changes, such as physical therapy, a healthy diet and exercise, in addition to medications. In some cases, surgery may be helpful.

Lifestyle and home remedies

If you've received a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease, you'll need to work closely with your doctor to find a treatment plan that offers you the greatest relief from symptoms with the fewest side effects. Certain lifestyle changes also may

help make living with Parkinson's disease easier. Healthy eating: Eat a nutritionally balanced diet that contains plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. These foods are high in fiber, which is important for helping prevent the constipation that is common in Parkinson's disease. Walking with care: Parkinson's disease can disturb your sense of balance, making it difficult to walk with a normal gait. Avoiding falls: In the later stages of the disease, you may fall more easily. That's because Parkinson's disease affects the balance and coordination centers in the brain. Dressing: Dressing can be the most frustrating of all activities for someone with Parkinson's disease. The loss of fine-motor control makes it hard to button and zip clothes, and even to step into a pair of pants. An occupational therapist can point out techniques that make daily activities easier.

Alternative medicine

Coenzyme Q10: People with Parkinson's disease tend to have low levels of coenzyme Q10, and some research has suggested it may be beneficial. Massage, Tai chi and yoga can all reduce muscle tension and promote relaxation, improve flexibility and balance. If you would like further information, call Garvan at Lynch’s Pharmacy on 4366923.

In The Loop with Peter Bowles

The gig guide is jam packed this week due to the fact that its the Jazz weekend sorry we didn’t have enough room for it all.....! My recommendation for Friday night would have to be the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble who are returning to the Pavilion again this year for the Jazz Weekend. The hypnotic brass Ensemble are a 9 piece band originally from Chicago, featuring 8 sons of Phil Cohran! They started out as a street ensemble before eventually they started recording in 2004. They have performed with artists like Mos Def, Aquilla and Maxwell. The pavilion is the perfect setting for them as they create an amazing atmosphere by interacting with the crowd. They usually play on Patricks street during the day a few hours before they play in the club so keeps your eyes peeled, if you want to get a feel for them, check out their more popular song War on youtube. Saturday night is a tough one and its a close call between Imelda May in the newly refurbished Savoy and Soul Driven, who play the Everman. Imelda, vocalist from Dublin, has grown to be a very well respected artist in the last few years. Her style is soft and seductive, you would be swaying rather than jiving!! If its more upbeat jazz your looking for then Soul Driven will be in the Everyman, a Cork based band, also featuring members from other countries, they are regular players in the Crane lane. By Sunday night you may be sick of the Jazz, well the Rochestown Park Hotel are hosting a 80s v 90s night with tribute bands; Spring Break and Smash Hits. It also features djs Ed Callanan and Joey Kelly and promises to be a jazz free zone!! Lady Gaga has announced that she will release The Fame Monster, a re-package of her 4 million-selling album The Fame. The album will include the entire album The Fame, along with eight entirely new songs. The Fame Monster deals with the seamier side of fame, as experienced by Gaga over the course of the year. The new version will be released in Ireland on November 20, 2009. Lady Gaga says, On my re-release The

The re-release will see two iconic covers one limited to an initial run of 10,000 copies. A super-deluxe magazine-style edition will arrive in December just in time for crimbo, including extra elements and neverbefore-seen photos of Lady Gaga. Christ shes full of it! Alexandra Burke lost a 1,000 bet with Simon Cowell. The singer - who rose to fame after winning UK TV talent show 'The X Factor, on which Simon is a judge - will have to pay out the large sum after her new track 'Bad Boys topped the UK singles charts. The 21-year-old star was convinced she would lose out to Robbie Williams, who released his comeback single 'Bodies at the same time. A source said: 'Simon Cowell was adamant that she could beat Robbie, but Alex wasnt having any of it. She thought how on earth could she beat someone who had so much success in the past. So when she discovered that she had, she was overwhelmed with excitement and then she remembered her little bet with her boss.' Rather than giving the money to Simon, Alexandra will donate the sum to Londons Battersea Dogs and Cats Home and has convinced the music mogul to match her contribution. Meanwhile, Alex has revealed she almost caused a road accident when

she heard she had reached the top spot. She laughed: 'I was in a car when I was told and the man who was driving nearly crashed because I screamed so hard in his ear.' The beauty has also revealed the charttopping track resembles her taste in men very closely. She said: 'I love bad boys - this song is a reflection of my personality. Sometimes I wont admit it because I dont want to look like a fool when they break my heart.' Madonna has been branded a 'neighbour from hell' and been accused of using her New York home as a rehearsal studio. The '4 Minutes singer has infuriated Karen George who lives above Madonna in the apartment block overlooking Central Park with her alleged 'blaring music and stomping'. George has filed a lawsuit against the 51-year-old pop star in Manhattan Supreme Court, complaining of 'unreasonably high-decibel, amplified music and vibrations pouring through walls, ceilings and radiators'. Ms. George has been forced to endure blaring music, stomping and shaking walls for approximately one and a half to three hours each day. The managers of the apartment block in which Madonna owns a 4 million property - say they have already threatened Madonna with eviction if she doesn't curb the noise. Complaints about the noise were first made over a year ago as Madonna prepared for her 'Sticky and Sweet world tour. The 'Material Girl singer bought a penthouse apartment in the block in the early 90s for more than 2 million, and purchased the 4 million property on the seventh floor last year.

GRANGEVALE AFC AUL 1 : Killumney 3 – Grangevale 1 Grangevale left Killeady empty handed on Sunday morning after a difficult assignment away to Killumney United. Gary Ahern was protected by a back 3 of Dave O’Sullivan, Danny O’Driscoll and Dave Burke, the midfield comprised of Danny Meade, John Harris, Philip Holland, Damo O’Callaghan and Eric Kennedy with Gerald McSorley and Jason Martin up top. Killumney, like the Vale, were unbeaten in the league prior to this fixture and also took a serious scalp in the Munster Junior Cup a few weeks ago, knocking out Grattan United, the Premier league frontrunners. From the first whistle it was apparent that the Vale had their work cut out with Killumney making all the early running. The job was made even more difficult by the fact that the opposition were physically much stronger and taller than the Vale lads and after 12 minutes the first goal of the game came via a deflected shot from the Killumney striker which flew into the corner of Ahern’s goal. It wasn’t long until the second arrived on 20 minutes when the ball was nudged to the net following a scramble in the 6 yard box. The Vale were in trouble and didn’t look like they had any way out, but to their credit, they began to take the game to Killumney and played some nice passing football which was rewarded in the 33rd minute when the ref pointed to the spot for a hand ball in the area after good work by McSorley and Burke. Jason Martin made no mistake and with the score at 2-1 at the break, it was game on. Eric Kennedy made way to allow for the introduction of Malik Elmusbahi at half time and the Vale began to push the home side back in search of an equaliser. However, it was Killumney who struck next with a header from a corner kick in the 54th minute and really this was game over. Eric Maher replaced Meade and Colin McKeon was introduced in place of Holland in an effort to push forward and maybe salvage a point, but Killumney held firm and although the Vale created a few half chances, they never really looked like getting back on level terms. This result still leaves Grangevale in 3rd spot in the league table behind Leeside and Douglas Hall with 4 wins from 5 league outings. Next Sunday, Bohemians travel to Grangevale Park to contest the 1st round of the St. Michael’s Cup, kick off 10.45am.

Douglas youngsters prepare for street leagues finals Following the recent exploits of the Douglas premier intermediate hurlers it is the turn of the younger members of Douglas Hurling & Football Club to deservedly assume their place in the limelight as they prepare for the street league finals. Saturday October 24th is the date set for their big day and the players are requested to meet at St. Columba’s Boys National School at 1.00pm in preparation for the parade which once again will be led by Mr. Tony O’Riordan and the Carrigaline Pipe Band. The games are scheduled to begin in the club pitches at 2.00pm and the presentation of medals will be conducted in the sports hall at 3.30pm in the presence of Cork hurling and camogie stars. Entertainment will also be provided between 5.00pm and 7.00pm to culminate what should be a great day. Following the recent celebrations and school visits the premier intermediate hurlers have settled down to training as their clash with Kilmoyley of Co. Kerry in the munster club 30 - Thur 22 Oct '09

Douglas Community School athletes Douglas Community School athletes enjoyed another hugely successful day at the 1st day of the Munster Cross-Country championships held in Dungarvan, winning team medals in the boy’s u14, u16, and u18 races. In the u14 race the schools newest young athletes raced over 1500m in their first ever Munster championships and ran superb to take team bronze. They were led home by Jack O’ Mahony 15th, Liam Harris 18th, Alan Ring 22nd and Jamie O’ Connell 27th. In the u16 race the team had a great day with 6 Togher runners finishing in the top 14 with Emmet Bracken a great 5th, Ian Tobin 7th, James Kelleher 10th, Andrew O’ Keeffe 13th and Eoin Bourke 14th. The team took the gold easily with the ‘B’ team 4th. In the u18 5000m race Patrick Coleman ran strongly to take 3rd place and other great runs came from Peter Hanrahan 4th, Mark Seacy 11th, Cullen Lynch 14th and Jamie Sullivan 18th. The team unfortunately lost the team title by a mere 4 points and so got the silver medals. They can however be satisfied with their performance considering they were missing a scoring man in Brian Murray who was sick and Cullen Lynch who was also not fully right having been sick during the week. No doubt they will give the All-Ireland title a real go in 5 weeks time and shoot for the 3 in a row. Well done to all on some superb performances.

Fr Mathews Basketball Club – Boys in match action It was the turn of our boys teams this week as a number of our teams were at home in Douglas Community School on Saturday. U11A Boys: Fr Mathews 24 – 20 Carraig na bhFear Kieran Daly’s young charges went into their second game of the season knowing it was going to be a tough contest against older, more experienced opponents in their North Cork rivals. Having won their opening game, Mathews supporters were hoping for another positive performance and they certainly got that. A very exciting game ensued with both sides giving their all. The big crowd in attendance witnessed some fantastic scores from players so young with Colm Barrett the games top scorer on 18 points ably assisted by Derek Emelifeonwy, Ronan Daly and Liam McCarthy who won some superb rebounds. Some of the younger players such as Robert Cahill, Gavin Burke, Bryce Solis and Alexander Harley impressed as they played excellent defence throughout. A good win for Mathews as they maintained their 100% record so far this season. U14B: Fr Mathews 48 – 17 Bantry This was an extraordinary match as Mathews dominated both the first and fourth quarters scoring 34 points to Bantry’s 5. They were, however, under significant pressure during the two middle quarters. In truth the game was over as a contest after the first period as the home side went in 18-0 ahead. Kyle Fitzgerald impressed for Mathews as he notched up some excellent baskets with strong drives to the hoop. Ethan King controlled the game from the point and was instrumental in running Mathews excellent fast break and twins Arron and Mark Horan did some great work under the boards. Some of the younger players such as Jack O’Sullivan and Devin O’Sullivan also impressed contributing to the win with some strong baskets from close in. Coach Pat King said afterwards that he was happy with his side’s performance and is looking forward to a good season ahead. U16B: Fr Mathews 43 – 27 Bantry Mathews left this one late as they trailed Bantry until just after the start of the final quarter. They were a transformed side in the final period, however, as Coach Eric O’Leary rallied his troops to the point where they came out and went on a scoring blitz hitting the West Cork outfit for 19 to 2 in the last 5 minutes. It was an extraordinary turnaround as players such as Edvinas Bielskus and Arthur Cirulis were sensational around the hoop. Eoghan O’Brien was superb under the boards as well winning several vital rebounds. In the end the speed and power of Mathews was too much for a gallant Bantry side as Mathews notched up their first win of the new season. NOTE: If you have a boy or girl who would like to take up basketball please contact Pat at 087-7905049 or log on to our website at www.frmathews.net to learn more about our club.

The Seniors suffered a disappointing home loss to Avondale. In a game that they had some chances it was Avondale who took their chance and claimed the three points. Next Sunday morning it’s away to Mayfield. The MSL Jnrs advanced to the next round of the FAI Jnr cup with a 6-1 home win over Casement Celtic. Next Friday night it’s the league cup quarter final at home to UCC The AUL Jnrs were beaten 6-5 on pens after a 2 all draw with Blarney. Shane Dorgan & Finbarr Desmond were on the score sheet. Next week its away to Rylane Celtic in the St Michaels Cup. The Youths exited the FAI Youths cup with a 2-1 defeat at home to Innishvilla. Eoin Murphy got the ‘Hall goal. Next Saturday it’s back to league action at home to Castleview with a 3pm kick off. The U/17’s lost 3-0 away to Greenwood and next week travel to Avondale.

U14s Schoolgirl Premier League Lakewood 1-4 College Corinthians Corinthians U14 girls travelled to Lakewood ( Ballincollig ) on Sat. morning and came away with a well deserved win. Corinthians were always in control with the defence of Michelle O’ Regan, Michelle Murphy and Taylor Webster stopping everything that Lakewood threw at them. With Kate Fitzpatrick and Katelyn Hickey(Capt.) controlling mid-field there seemed no way through for Lakewood but they always had to be on their guard with Niamh O’ Leary and Kira Nevin always a danger. To go to Lakewood and come away unbeaten is something but to come away with a WIN is a great achievement for the girls, after the 6 -6 thriller against Wilton only two weeks ago. This will give them confidence for there next game away to Douglas Hall in two weeks time. Scorers for Corinthians were Kellie Lynch, Laura O’ Brien, Megan Connolly and Isable Ganey. Girl of the match for Corinthians was Michelle O’ Regan

G.A.A. FOCUS Snippets from the Local and National Scene By Pat Harrington Senior Hurling Champions Congratulations to Newtownshandrum on winning their fourth county title in a Decade. My complements are not intended to camouflage the fact that +I am not an admirer of their style of hurling. They have perfected the running game and one has to credit them for what they have achieved. Their pick is miniscule in comparison to that of the large city clubs. The look of sheer delight on the face of Ben O’Connor after he scored the opening goal told it all. This is a driven club whose achievements are extraordinary. Only five of the Y2000 team started on Sunday week. The O’Connors and Pat Mulcahy are the leaders of this outfit. Sarsfields Sars were a major disappointment on the day, especially when we consider the great performances and tremendous scores they produced during the year. No trophy is presented for any performance prior to the final but has to be earned on final day. I felt that Sars were somewhat like the Cork footballers; they failed to turn in the required performance in the second half and paid the ultimate price. Foolishly they allowed Newtown too much space. Hopefully this great club will bounce back again and once more challenge for honours. Newtown now enter the club championship and hopefully they will kick on for the bigger prize. It will be interesting to see if the Tipperary, Galway or Kilkenny champions afford them space to showcase their hurling skills. Intermediate Hurling Champions The Douglas panel is a much younger outfit to that which represented the club with such distinction in Y2000. Only three players of that starting fifteen lined out in this years final. Their next venture is in the Munster club championship in November against Kilmoyley whose marquee player is Shane Brick, a teacher at St. Anthony’s school. Kilmoyley are coached by Anthony Daly (Dublin Manager). Hopefully the Munster council will be sensible in its ticket pricing. The big challenge for this Douglas team is first and foremost to secure their status in 2010 by winning one of their two open championship games. The attitude, mindset and determination of the players will be paramount to the club’s hurling future. Only time will tell. Useful / Useless information Newtownshandrum won the senior county in Y2000 – Douglas the intermediate title. This same combination of successes has been repeated in 2009. Douglas were defeated at the semi-final stage by Blarney in 1999 and again in 2008 Blarney defeated the city club. Another interesting statistic which perhaps illustrates the importance of continuity is, Douglas were runners-up in the 2005 under 21 county final. Eight of that squad started in the 2009 county intermediate final, whilst another three players were on the panel. Confidence or What? Brendan Black and Philip Doherty senior must be very confident men as they hoisted two 5 ft. x 3ft. placards in Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Sunday proclaiming “Douglas 2009 County Champions. County Board Draw The County Board draw commences on the 30.10.09. This is a risk fee draw for clubs. The more tickets each club sells the greater the reward - 500 members represent €25,500 to the club. Each ticket over 500 represents a return of 65% to the club. There is a car as first prize each month, there are also money prizes, holidays etc. Yes the county board benefits but the local club is the greatest beneficiary. Tickets are €100 - €10 per month. Michael Flaherty, R.I.P. This gentleman, so well known in refereeing circles as Mickey Flaherty sadly passed way recently. A man who stood somewhat short of the 6’ mark he could be quite stern and was fully capable of interpreting and administering the rules. In 1985 Douglas played Bishopstown in the first round of the intermediate championship. Jimmy O’Mahony who was playing full back with Douglas had little to do that

day (perhaps it had something to with the fact that I was playing at centre back). In the opening half of the game the bold Mickey awarded a free against Jimmy down at the Blackrock end to which Jimmy seemed to take exception and thought he should have a few words with the official. To the onlooker this was a rather amusing scene with Mickey looking up at Jimmy who stood almost a foot above him. It was a very animated man-toman chat between two quite stubborn people – nothing malicious but very entertaining. Michael is now gone to his reward and may the Good God grant him eternal rest. More next week, Pat.
