The Word
by George Thompson - Editor
‘Hanging from the Rafters’ I was at Neptune Stadium last week for the launch of Douglas man Kieran Shannon’s comprehensive book on the golden age of Irish basketball titled ‘Hanging From The Rafters’, describing the glamorous days of the early 80’s with the introduction of American players to the Irish league, interviews with many of the greats and packed with statistics up to the present day. The stadium was packed for the launch and was attended by some of the stars from those great days of the 80’s when as the book title suggests, fans were literally hanging from the rafters at venues up and down the country, the support was so strong. I have been involved in basketball for most of my life and love the game and it was great that the launch of Kieran’s book last week brought out so many people like myself who have been part of the sport and indeed many faces were reacquainted at this event and what better place to launch the book than Neptune stadium which is the only stadium owned by a basketball club in the British Isles and Ireland. Neptune Stadium celebrates 25 years this December and there will be programme of events to coincide with this in the coming months. Congratulations to Kieran on this bible of Irish Basketball. * * * Way back in the 60’s at the age of 9, I was introduced to St. Finbarr’s pipeband by my uncle who is a fine musician in his own right and encouraged me to further my drumming skills by joining the band, which I did and under the guidance of Paddy Cronin, I began my drumming career. I called into St. Finbarr’s band rooms at the Glen last week and learned from Paddy, who is a cornerstone of St. Finbarr’s, that currently they have drummers travelling up from Wexford and pipers from Limerick because there is no new blood coming into the pipeband scene. There’s something about pipe and drum music that will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck or make you cry and I would urge music teachers to encourage pupils with an interest in music to look at the option of joining one of the many pipebands in Cork and keep alive the long tradition of this music discipline which Cork is noted for. * * * It was with a tinge of sadness that I watch the final MotoGP races of the season from Spain on TV las weekend. Sadness, as it was the end of an era for the 250cc class which is being replaced next season after 60 years by the new Moto2 class for 600cc machines. While all the limelight is on the ‘big class’ (MotoGP), the 125s and 250s have provided some of the closest and exciting racing down the years producing many world champions and household names in the world of motorcycle racing. * * * Congratulations to local man Luke Philpott (front cover) who is no stranger to the stage as a fine singer but the fruits of Luke’s other passion came to fruition last week when he opened an exhibition of his drawings and paintings at Douglas Library. The exhibition continues this week at the library and well worth having a look.

Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day! Dear Editor Just wondering if the Tesco shopping center have any plans for more toilet facilities I went shopping in Tesco on Sunday with my 3yr old daughter half way through my shopping she needed to use the bathroom only to be told there were no toilet facilities at this end of the shopping centre the only toilet on this end was out of order while I must say the bathroom is state of the art it is too faraway from the Tesco end and maybe they might consider putting some more toilette up at this end one is not enough and especially when it does not work Regards Mary Cremin Grange Douglas

Senator Jerry Buttimer LET THERE BE LIGHT!!
Dear Editor, Whilst present Government rules, just a matter of time before we find out where Moses was when the lights went out!! All together now - “In the Dark!!” Cost of imported power and light escalating daily in Eire. Alternatives are vital, latest figures put cost of imported energy equal to the present budget deficiency, can anyone do the math ? If we produced our own power we’d solve a major crisis. I’ve got Windmills on my Mind. The Irish coastline, and in particular the West coast, experience strong winds all year round; ideal for providing our own needs, and some to sell to other States, solving one big problem. How’s about windmills in Dail Eireann? Even stronger blasts of hot air flying about from all sides of the house!! Let’s do it!! Power to the People!! Neil O’Donoghue Greenhills Court.
Squeezed Out!! Dear Editor Some time ago I leased a premises on the Kinsale Road to run a Car Valeting Business. After six months I had to close down due to the severe noise coming from a nearby distribution company. There were up top thirty vehicles with fridge engines running at all times. The noise was intolerable. I wrote to the Dept of Transport and they informed that all these vehicles should be plugged in to an electric system when loading. Engines should only be used when vehicles are on the road! This was reported to the company in question and they didn’t want to know! Are they above the law ? To make matters worse the entrance to my premises was invariable blocked off, at various times, on a daily basis, by trucks from this company! I am now out of work for over two years I have a young family ! Why should a big business be allowed to do this to my family? Shame on You ! Unemployed! Kevin! (Full name and address with Editor)

Support for Kennys Call on Government to leave child benefit payments alone in the forthcoming budget “I am pleased that Fine Gael as part if its alternative approach will not touch child benefit in the forthcoming budget. It is essential that we protect and look after children in the budget. A large number of people with children are struggling and a tax or a reduction in child benefit would push many young couples over the edge. Many people rely on child benefit as a source of income and any attack on this must be fought with vigor. It is important that we protect the most vulnerable in the forthcoming budget and the comments by Enda Kenny on radio are a welcome development. It shows Fine Gaels commitment to those who need protection.”

Swine Flu ! (Continued from last week) We pulled up outside the house. We could see the two older boys wrestling in the front room. My son looked at me with blood shot eyes and said, "Please don't tell them." I agreed not to say anything but said he should go straight to his room and avoid contact. As soon as I opened the front door, he shot upstairs. I airily announced to the boys that their brother had a cold and they should keep away unless they wanted to catch it themselves. The brothers shrugged their shoulders and resumed mauling each other. At 7.30 pm Manchester United were playing some Russian team. The 10 year old wanted to watch but couldn’t share the same air space as his brothers. He couldn’t bear the deceit any longer and whispered, "I think we should tell them," While he hid behind a chair, I summoned his brothers into the kitchen. They came in reluctantly, impatient at being torn away from the match. I said, "Your brother wants you to know what is really wrong with him, he has Swine Flu." They froze in their tracks and stared at their younger brother in open horror. Younger brother cringed and shrank further behind the chair. The 15 year old looked at me and said, "Aren't you worried?" I told him that I wasn't even though I would be the one most likely to catch it since I was in constant contact with him. He looked at me and then at his cowering brother and back again. He asked what was for dinner and left the room. The 10 year old couldn’t believe his luck. He thought he would be as welcome as mud. I pulled a chair into the hall, wrapped my sick little man in his Man United blanket, put a woolly hat on his head, a hot water bottle in his lap and that's where he watched the match. The following day, after a great night’s sleep he got very bold and became skittish as a kitten as he taunted his brothers with his disease. Wherever he went, they would immediately leave the room and moan to me. I got very ratty trying to separate them and eventually gave up. If one is sick, they might as well be all sick. I thought disclosure would be the best policy and rang Granny who took off like a bat out of hell to the chemist and stocked up on Rubex Vitamin C tablets, oranges, lemons and honey. My child minder's children were delighted and hoped to catch it by Sunday so they can miss school for another week. My parents were well impressed with the array of illnesses in our house but were happy to avoid us for the next week or so. I also rang my sister in law who is a doctor. I couldn't understand how my son had Swine Flu when he had so few symptoms. She told me she gets on average 10 cases of flu a day and although some cases are very bad people die from flu in one form or another every year. The media have everybody terrified and made it a taboo illness. Having said that, she told me we were lucky and got off lightly. Amen to that.

Douglas Community Association (With Helen Fox, PRO Douglas Community Association) New Sub-Committee on Finance and General Purposes At the October executive meeting of the Douglas Community Assoc., Chairman Billy Coleman proposed the setting up of a Finance and Gen. Purposes Sub-Committee which would act as an advisory group on what are the most urgent priorities needing attention. This committee, comprising five members from the executive committee, has now been formed and they are: Chairperson, Padraig Martin; Vice Chairperson, David Boyle; Secretary, Helen Fox; John Fitzgerald and Bill Perrott, committee members. This committee has had its first meeting and has recommended that the main priority would be to upgrade the Meals-on-Wheels function as a matter of urgency. Members will visit Meals-on-Wheels facilities in neighbouring communities to learn about ‘best practice’ and what is required to comply with the Health and Safety regulations. Funding this project will not be easy in the current economic climate but every effort
will be made to convince the statutory bodies to provide some finance to support this vital service. Opening Hours at Centre The office at the centre is manned from 9 am to 1 pm on Monday, Tuesday and Friday mornings, and on Wed. and Thursday afternoons from 2-4 p.m. If you have an issue you wish to bring to the attention of the Association, please drop a note into the centre and it will be discussed at the next monthly meeting. The phone number at the centre is 4362289; if the phone is unmanned when you call, please leave a message.

Science Week activities in Cork This week is Science Week and it runs until Sunday the 15th November with events across the country designed to awaken young people’s interest in science, encourage the take up of science and help create future economic growth. As Fine Gael Spokesperson on Innovation I believe Science Week is one of the most positive examples we have of looking towards the future. Science Week encourages interest in science which will help create a better Ireland, at the cutting edge of scientific innovation and with a more stable economy built on the solid foundations of scientific research, development and innovation. Science Week aims to promote the relevance of science, engineering and technology in our everyday lives and to demonstrate the importance of these disciplines to the future development of Irish society and to the economy. This year, as with every year, Cork will play a major role in Science Week. Exciting events will be held across the City and County in venues including the City Hall, UCC, CIT, Lifetime Lab and Blackrock Castle Observatory among many others.

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn
Some time ago Padraig de Brun sent us a poem called ‘The Cruise’ which made us think about our approach towards God. His poem this week can slip through the strings of one’s heart and touch that humanity we sometimes try to hide. Born in Listowel, County Kerry. Padraig made NY his home in 1962. He played music with several NY bands for a while. He loves good poetry, and well written songs and stories. Padraig is a member of the Irish American Society, Mineola NY... The Kerrymens P & B Association NY... the Cill Cais Players - Irish Theatre group ( putting on 2 plays in NY at the moment). Married, 2 Children , 2 Grand Children and as he likes to add “a have a few silver hairs”.
The Great Grand Son We were sitting on the curb stone, T’was only him and me And he, he was only 5 years old, And I on 63. “Can we unbury Great Gran Ma”? Was the question that he asked. As he flicked the pebbles on her grave, “Stop” I said, “she -won’t - like - that.”!

My heart grew heavy in my breast, A tear began to show. Remembering him upon her knee A short 3 years ago. “I miss Great Gran Ma,” says he And he began to cry, I put my arm around him and Gently whispered, “So do I ” I had told him she was buried here Beside his Great Gran Dad. “Can we unbury Great Gran Pa too” Said the Innocent little Lad. “Ah, No, Sure they’re in heaven now But I bet they’re glad you’re here Great Gran Ma loved you very much, she told me so,” I lost another tear. As I scooped him in my arms to go Pretending rain was in my eye He said, “ Grandpa, Can we unbury Great Grand Ma, I want to say goodbye.” Padraig de Brun. Send your poem to ‘The Poetry Corner’ / Douglas Post. Unit 14. Morris House, Douglas, Cork or you can email it direct to ronniemcginn@eircom.net. If possible keep your poem to 20 lines. You may choose any subject you like, in any form you like as long as it’s original. We look forward to hearing from you. RonnieMcGinn

Fundraiser for Sick Children to go to Euro Disney at SoHo this Friday Disney’s best known characters lined up in SoHo Bar and Restaurant today to announce details of an upcoming fundraising event for The Cork City Hospital Childrens Club based in CUH. The event takes place this Friday, 13th November in SoHo Bar and Restaurant from 8.00pm. The Cork City Hospital Childrens Club is a group of up to 40 volunteers who fund trips for terminally ill & sick children to go to Euro Disney on an annual basis and 2009 will be their 12th trip. Sean McCarthy, SoHo Bar and Restaurant, Official Patrons of the Cork City Hospital Childrens Club, said: “We are delighted to be the official patrons of the club and urge everybody to come out this Friday to SoHo Bar and Restaurant. It promises to be a fantastic night with live band Boogie Band playing as well as a DJ and a late bar. There will be several raffle prizes on the night to be won, with some fun with the Disney characters in house, “he said.
“We are delighted that SoHo Bar and Restaurant are fundraising for us on a busy Friday night and would like to thank all the staff and customers for their support. Throughout the year we also funded family holidays for terminally ill children and try to send all the family on one last trip together, “said John Looney, Chairperson of the Childrens Club. The Cork City Hospital Childrens Club was formed many years ago in the Cork University Hospital by a small number of volunteers. It has grown to a group of 40 official volunteers. The club members consist of Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists, Play Specialists, Security Officers, Social Workers, Clerical Officers, Housekeeping and Guards. 72 people, including staff, travelled to Euro Disney in 2008 on the annual trip. Other activities the club are involved with include an event at Fota House every Christmas where children from all over Munster are brought to meet Santa. Tickets are priced at €10 and are available by contacting SoHo Bar and Restaurant on 021 422 4040 or by contacting the Cork City Hospital Childrens Club from John Looney on 087 2949235.

Crosshaven Development Committee Crosshaven Development Committee are delighted to announce the forthcoming launch of our 2010 calendar. Viewing area at Weavers Point Church Bay to include a state of the art telescope for visitors to use for FREE, to observe ships & yachts entering the harbour. Better access to the bathing areas of Graball Bay for all to enjoy. The photographs in the calendar are submitted throughout the year by members of the public and it is only on the night of the launch do they know if their photographs have been successful for inclusion in the calendar. The calendar is being launched on the Friday 13th November at the Wonderful recently restored Crosshaven House in the village centre. The unveiling and launch will take place at 8.00pm. All members of the public are welcome and the calendar will be for sale on the night for a modest €10.
Launch of Family Support Needs Analysis of Carrigaline Last week Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheal Martin, T.D. formally launched the first ever ‘Family Support Needs Analysis of Carrigaline’. This research document was prepared by Carrigaline Family Support Initiative a voluntary based group in Carrigaline, whose principle focus is to improve Family Supports in the area. According to Mark Ginn, Chairperson of the group.’ The findings of this report are particularly relevant at this time in light of the changing economic and social environment. He went on to say that ‘ some families in the area are facing into very challenging times and one of principle focuses of this group will be to develop programmes that can help improve family supports and ease the burden on these families, where appropriate’. Arising from the in-depth research which included widespread interviews, focus groups etc. with public, private and voluntary people from the area, the report identifies the following gaps/needs in family support provision in the area. Focusing on pre-school and primary school children and their parents areas identified include the need for: Home Parenting Support for mothers with young babies, After/Out of School services for Primary Children More affordable childcare and affordable activities for children Support Groups and Parenting Programmes for parents of children A significant finding among adolescents was the need for an appropriate local Mental Health Support Service and improved supports and recreational facilities for young people. The report found that Services for older people are particularly good in the area including Meals on Wheels, Day Care Centre and two older peoples groups, who provide excellent programmes and activities on a weekly base. However, services that can combat isolation among older people and the provision of home supports were two key areas of need identified for this target group. Interventions to reduce isolation of immigrant parents with young children in the community as well as the provision of more services to allow for greater social interaction in their community were highlighted. The report also highlighted the need for a more in-depth analysis of the disability sector in the area. The key recommendation emerging from this report is the need for a Family Support Centre, which would act as a central point for the delivery of family support services in the area. However, the committee point out that while they will be working towards securing funding from the public and private sector to achieve this centre, in the short term, there main priority will be to deliver programmes and services that can help families in the area, such as a Home Support and Visiting Service, Programmes to deal with emotions such as anxiety and Parenting Support Programmes. Mark Ginn, Chairperson concluded that the group have already delivered the Assist Suicide Prevention Programme in the area with the support of the HSE and the lions Club and over the next seven weeks, it will be training 16 volunteers to deliver the Parent Plus Parenting Programme in the community in the new year and will be rolling out the Friends Anxiety Prevention and Treatment Programme in conjunction with the Community School.

PLANNING PERMISSION APPROVED FOR STAR OF THE SEA NEW SCHOOL BUILDING Local Fianna Fáil T.D. Michael McGrath has warmly welcomed confirmation that planning permission has today been granted for a new school building for Star of the Sea Primary School, Passage West. 'Cork County Council has today approved planning permission for a new 16-classroom school and associated facilities on a greenfield site at Maulbaun, adjacent to St Peter's Community School. The grant of planning permission is a very significant milestone for everyone associated with the campaign for the new school building for Star of the Sea. Provided there is no appeal to An Bord Pleanála, the school can now move ahead to tender and construction without further delay,' stated Deputy McGrath. 'As a past pupil of the school, I am delighted that the development of the new school is now finally going ahead. The Minister has confirmed to me in writing that the funding is in place for the new school and it will now proceed as planned. Since my election as a T.D. in 2007, I have campaigned vigorously in favour of this project and will continue to do so until the doors to the new school are open,' added Deputy McGrath. 'I would like to pay tribute to the Principal, Staff, Parents' action committee and everyone associated with the school for their commitment to providing the best possible school environment for the pupils of Star of the Sea,' concluded Deputy McGrath. Apart from 16 general classrooms, the new state-of-theart school will have a general purpose room; PE equipment store; library and resource area; multi-purpose room; special education tuition rooms; general office; teacher and staff room; and a principal's office.

Are You Increasing Your Babies risk of developing a Food Allergy Waiting until your baby is older than 3 months before feeding her cereal helps prevent food allergies. But it's especially important to hold off on gluten-containing cereals if you have a family history of celiac disease. Researchers followed 1,560 children at risk of wheat sensitivity and found that those exposed to wheat, barley, or rye in the first 3 months had five times the risk of developing the chronic intestinal disorder, compared with those who were fed these grains after 3 months.
Fibre Fights Fat Curbing fat in your diet is a good thing, but now researchers have found that increasing fibre is a more successful strategy. Using data
for an appointment please contact the dental reception on 021 432 2854 from 4,539 adults, ages 20 to 59, researchers compared calorie intake, dietary fibre intake, and other food consumption factors with body mass index (BMI). Women who consumed more dietary fibre were significantly less likely to be overweight or obese than women who consumed little dietary fibre. Consuming a lot of fibre also seemed to be more protective against gaining excess pounds than eating a lowfat diet. While men in the study did not show a protective effect from eating dietary fibre, only 5% of them consumed an adequate amount of it, so the sample size may have been too limited to see the effect. High-fibre foods include oats and oat bran, barley, brown rice, beans, apples, carrots, and most other fruits and vegetables.
More Soy to Lower BP Your heart craves tofu. Soy doesn't just reduce cholesterol: Bulking up on the protein can lower your blood pressure. In a study, 302 adults with elevated blood pressure added a daily cookie to their diet. Half got one baked with 40 g of soy protein and the rest munched on one made with wheat. After 4 months, the soy group's blood pressure dropped by about 4 points, while the wheat eaters' stayed the same. Soy may help by providing amino acids that expand blood vessels. Try soy foods such as tofu burgers, soy milk, and edamame.

Young @ Heart by Phil Goodman
Ageism is a prejudice against older people because they are old. To some extent ageism has developed because of the separation between the generations. In years past, older people lived on in the extended family and got a lot of respect due to their life’s experience and wisdom. Ageism behaviour includes talking down to older people, not listening to their opinions. As an older person you may begin to see yourself as others see you, your confidence dashed, your potential limited. Don’t accept a lower standard of living for older people just because they are older. There is a Senior Helpline which is a confidential listening service for older people by older people for the price of a local call. The phone number is 1850 – 440 – 444. In December we will once again have our annual Quiz with the Transition Year Students from Douglas Community School. We hope to have at least 10 teams and each team will consist of 2 older and 2 students. There are no ageism problems when the teams go head to head! These students also teach our members computers each week. We strongly believe in encouraging this interaction between young and old in our Community, both sides learn from each other. I you would like to take part in the Quiz, give me a call on 4363867. We have booked the Half Moon Theatre on opening night for a Tribute to Johnny Mercer. You may not have heard of him but you certainly know his songs, Moon River, Autumn Leaves etc. The date is the 24th November. If you would like to join jus, give me a call. Our Christmas Dinner is on the 29th November in the Rochestown Park Hotel, Tickets are 26 Euro and all are welcome. The winners of the Waltzing Competition, Dominic Walsh and Mary Walsh (no relation) will dance in Douglas Village Shopping Centre on the 5th December between 12.00 – 1.00. They will bring along their Trophies with them. The Trophies were sponsored by the Shipton Group or as we prefer to say by ‘Douglas Village Shopping Centre’. Dominic and Mary with other couples will dance the waltz, samba, foxtrot etc. We have our own Strictly Come Dancing Champions here in Douglas!!!

An Giota Gaeilge Le Liam Ó Móráin
An bhfuil An Nollaig orainn cheanna? An tseachtain seo thart bhí mé ag tiomáint ón gCarraig Dhubh i dtreo na Dúghlaise fad Bóthair na hEaglaise, idir Bóthair na Carraige Dubha agus Bóthair na Scéithe Airde, nuair a chonaic oll-shiopa Uí Scallaigh amach romham agus maisiúcháin na Nollaig ag crochadh cheanna féin! Sea, bhí Daidí na Nollaig ag iarraí bualadh isteach trí fhuinneog ar bharr an tí – sea, i dtús mí na Samhna, agus is ar éigean go raibh féile Shamhna thart ar an lá céanna! Tuigim nach miste do lucht gnó an méad is féidir leo a dhéanamh chun gnó a mhealladh, go háraithe le linn an ngéarchéim eacnamaíochta, ach ag crochadh maisiúcháin na Nollag chomh luath sin! Ardaíonn an iompar seo ceist mór eile, dar liom. Sin ceist an tábhachta a bhaineann leis an gceangal atá idir an gcreidimh Chríostaíochta agus chúrsaí tráchtála, go háraithe um an dtaca seo den bhliain. Nuair a bhí mé an-óg (fadó fadó) agus ar scoil tionóladh ceolchoirm bunaithe ar scéal bhreith Chríost, agus An Chéad Chlann. Bhíodh gach daltaí sa rang páirteach ann agus thagadh na tuismitheoirí uile go dtí an cheolchoirm agus bhíodh ranganna eile mar chóir ag casadh neart carúil na Nollag freisin. Bhí an-tábhacht ag baint le seo ag an am. Cuireadh neart tábhacht freisin leis an dtráchtáil um Nollaig chomh maith, ach ní raibh an béim ar airgead a dhéanamh nó ar ‘rudaí’ nua a aimsiú chomh mór sin agus is cosúil go bhfuil sé sa lá atá inniu ann. Is chuimhin liom gur iarradh orainn smaoineamh orthu san nach mbeadh deis acu earraí nó bronntanais nua a aimsiú dóibh féin. Nuair a bhíodh muid féin i mbun ár siopadóireacht do bhronntanais bhíodh orainn bronntanas nua a cheannach a dtabharfaí d’eagraíochtaí éagsúla carthanais a dháilfeadh na bronntanais seo i measc na mbocht agus daoine a bhí ar an ghann-chuid ag an am. Nuair a bhíos i mbun seirbhís caidrimh poiblí a sholáthar na blianta ó shin is chuimhin liom seirbhís cumarsáide bolscaireachta um Nollaig a eagrú ar son oll-shiopa nó dhó agus i gcónaí i measc na scéim cumarsáide bolscaireachta d’eagraíomar scéim nó dhó chun scéal creidimh Chríostaíochta na Nollag a meascadh le cúrsaí tráchtála na Nollag. De ghnáth fágtar bunú Teach Daidí na Nollag sna hollmhargaí go dtí tús mí na Nollag cé gur thit an dáta seo siar pas beag isteach go deireadh mí na Shamhna – rud a tharla le linn tréimhse an Tíogar Cheiltigh. I mbliana, táim den bharúil go bhfillfidh bunú na dtithe seo ar ais go dtí am níos gaire do Lá Nollaig féin, mar nach bhfuil dóthain airgid ag daoine i mbliana na costais a bhaineann le cuairt ar cheann de na tithe seo, idir an ghrianghraf, an bhronntanas agus an chuairt ar an bhfear féin – toradh eile ar an gcúlú eacnamaíochta! Mar fhocail scoir, tá éad agam d’úsáid an fhocail ‘Xmas’ seachas an focal ‘Christmas’ – agus iarraim ort, a léitheoir dhílis, an dara fhocal a úsáid i mbliana. Gan amhras, bheadh sé níos fearr fós an leagan Gaeilge, An Nollaig, a úsáid, agus cártaí na Nollag i nGaeilge a aimsiú agus a sheoladh. Ná déan dearmad ar na dátaí poist is déanaí – go háraithe má tá tú ag seoladh cárta nó beart thar lear – mar tá na dátaí poist deireanach ag druidim orainn go tapa!
Brainteazer Last Week’s Teazer The little Scottish island of Moray boasts the grandly titled “Bridge over the Atlantic” (The locals gloss over the fact that , at this point the Atlantic is only a few feet wide). The bridge is only single track and every morning McLeod the postman drives his van at breakneck speed over the bridge and onto the island. However, every morning the local milkman drives his van at similar speed across the bridge as he leaves the island. Neither could ever bring himself to
give way, so why is there never an accident ? Last Week’s Answer. Fortunately, they, reached the bridge at different times. This Week’s Teazer Jim White watched in exasperation as the soccer team he had led to world fame over five years was trounced by Brazil. It was just awful! No matter how much he bellowed advice and encouragement nobody took the slightest notice. He almost wept with sheer frustration. At last the whole dismal affair was over and Brazil won by such a huge margin that it went into the record books. Yet, oddly, when the next day’s newspapers came out, Jim, far from being attacked was extravagantly praised. Why ?

Ford Site gets €1 million investment One of Corks most iconic sites, The Ford plant on the Marina, is to get a new lease of life as Paintball Cork, the first indoor paintball site in Ireland. The site began production in 1917 as the first Ford factory outside North America, initially producing tractors before moving onto car assembly in 1921. It finally closed in 1984. Stories of the infamous

paints pits abound amongst former Ford employees, but the paint has an altogether different purpose at the location today. Paintball Cork was the brainchild of Meath-based business coach and consultant, Mike Ronald. Over €1million has been invested to date in this leisure project. Essentially this is a fun game which involves teams and uses realistic guns which shoot the opposing team with paint. David Hanley, Site Manager has ambitious plans for the site, currently covering an area of 25, 000 sq. ft. The completely indoor site will not be at the mercy of our unpredictable Irish weather and offers a more themed experience than previously available. Currently employing 12 people, Mr. Hanley sees this rising to 20 by Christmas and has plans to expand the site and has plans to expand in the next development phase. The leisure industry is holding up well in the current economic recession bur mainly due to the effort of entrepreneurs who are becoming more inventive in the service they are offering. Paintball Cork is already forging links with local pubs and restaurants and is targeting businesses as a forum for team building events as well as parties.

Cork’s Diamond Ball, Cork’s 1st ever ‘Diamond Ball’ in aid of Positive Mental Health Resources for the Youth of Midleton at the Castlemartyr Resort was launched in the exquisitely extended & refurbished ‘Elm Tree, Glounthaune’. Owner Derek Walshe and his team were delighted to support this ‘very prevalent & more than worthy cause’. The event is scheduled for Saturday December 5th 2009. The Gala Ball is being held to raise vital funds for resources for the young people in Midleton. The Diamond Ball is being organised by Mary Spillane Buckley who is no stranger to fundraising. Mary previously raised funds for both ‘Jack & Jill Foundation’ and the ‘Alannah Appeal’. Having discovered the cure for colic Mary has now dedicated the the focus of her scientific research to understanding ‘Positive Mental Health’ & how it can be achieved. Living in Midleton, a town she loves, she has seen the devastation caused by suicide at first hand but also the dedication of those who wish to prevent it. The funds raised at the Ball will go toward resources for young people. Mary also hopes to raise awareness of the importance of Positive Mental Health and well being. The ‘Diamond Ball’ can only happen with serious diamonds on board and thanks to the generous support of Frances Lynch a diamond necklace valued six thousand euro will be auctioned on the night. Frances is fully behind Mary’s campaign to raise awareness on Positive
Mental Health Like Mary she thinks outside the block. She was aware that the recession changed the market place. Realising that people would need cash she opened a new business where people could sell there old broken and unwanted jewellery and get cash. Investors can then buy the gold. However as diamonds are still girls best friends she also sells diamond jewellery next door on Oliver Plunkett Street. Romance is still important and men are treating their wives. For a number of years various organisations have been working in a consultative process to identify the needs of young people in the area with a view to putting resources in place for them. In the spirit of community participitation East Cork Area Development has been working in partnership with young people, the HSE and other organisations to decide what the priorities are. Trojan work has been carried out by many individuals with an interest in promoting positive mental health in young people and averting loss of life. Health professionals have been working within the community on a suicide prevention strategy coordinated by Brenda Crowley, Mental Health Resource Officer HSE South, as like many other towns in Ireland, Midleton has experienced premature loss of life. Pat Buckley said “Lets get together” in 2006 and people have responded. So for a spectacular evening supporting an exceptional local cause we urge people to take an evening out where they can forget doom and gloom whilst being part of a superb mission to support ‘Positive Mental Health’ in a very positive manner. The ‘Midleton Youth Resources/ Positive Mental Health account information is as follows & all donations would be very much appreciated: Permanent TSB, Main Street, Midleton, Co Cork. In The Loop with Peter Bowles
Arctic Monkeys clearly considered the release of single 'Crying Lightning' through Oxfam shops earlier in the year a whopping success, as they are to do the same with forthcoming single 'Cornershop'. While 'Crying Lightning'
was released on seven inch vinyl, 'Cornershop' will be release on 10", with three new B-sides – 'Catapult', 'Sketchead', and 'Fright Lined Dining Room'. The single will be available in the top 50 Oxfam music stores across the UK, and we assume the same ones as last time here in Ireland. Each single will come with a download code allowing purchasers to download the MP3s of the songs. A la Willy Wonka, the band have hidden a limited number of 'golden tickets' for their sold out UK tour in random copies of the single. No word yet on whether that includes their Dublin and Belfast shows, taking place in the Odyssey Arena on November 25th and The O2 on November
26th. Rumours surfaced last week that Steven Tyler was to leave his long time post as frontman of Aerosmith, after an interview with Classic Rock Magazine, in which Tyler admitted that he had solo projects in the pipeline. "I don't know what I’m doing yet, but it’s definitely going to be something Steven Tyler: working on the brand of myself – Brand Tyler... Once the band hit the final note and I walk off stage - then I'll tell you the whole story". Now the split is looking increasingly likely, as guitarist Joe Perry told The Las Vegas Sun that he had discovered on the internet that Tyler had quit. "Steven quit as far as I can tell. I don't know any more than you do about it. I got off the plane two nights ago. I saw online that Steven said that he was going to leave the band. I don't know for how long, indefinitely or whatever. Other than that, I don't know." Apparently, Tyler walked out after a performance in Abu Dhabi last month and has not been in touch with the rest of the band since, even refusing to take their phone calls. Meanwhile, guitarist Brad Whitford has admitted that the band would consider replacing Tyler with a new vocalist. "Nobody could replace Steven or imitate him – he's one of a kind. But if somebody was willing to do it and the chemistry was right, why not?". Onto rap now, having recently performed his first full concert in four years at the New Orleans Voodoo Festival, it seems Eminem will also make a return to his brief career in acting. Slim Shady is to produce and star in 3D hip-hop horror film 'Shady Talez', which has been described as a cross between 'Creep Show' and 'The Twilight Zone'. The project is said to consist of three stories that offer a rap take on classic horror stories. It will be released in conjunction with a fourissue comic book series. The script will be

Polaris Music Prize winning Canadian hardcore band F**ked Up are to use their $20,000 winnings to re-record the Band Aid Christmas classic 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' Similar to the original single, this version will feature a host of guest appearances. Members of Vampire Weekend, TV On The Radio, Broken Social Scene, Bob Mould, No Age,
Yo La Tengo, the GZA and David Cross are all on board, while Feist, Jarvis Cocker and MIA are yet to be confirmed. Frontman Damian Abraham AKA Pink Eyes told press, "We wanted the biggest people we could get. If we could get a Jonas Brother on this, I would get a Jonas Brother." The single will be released on Matador, and aims to raise money for smaller charities including Justice For The Missing. College Corinthians AFC Under 13 Avondale Utd. 0 Corinthian Boys 1 Corinthians maintained their 100% league record with a hard fought victory over Avondale. Played in extremely difficult conditions Corinthians had the better of the exchanges and deservedly took the lead when Corey Galvin cut in from the right and fired home from the edge of the area. Avondale fought back strongly in the last fifteen minutes and it took some strong defensive play from Shane Daly, Alex Burns, Mark Dolan and Ben Mc Cauliffe to maintain Corinthians single goal advantage. Corinthian Boys A 2 Youghal Utd. 1 This was a great game and a great win for Corinthians over table toppers Youghal United. Youghal could have been two up within minutes of the start only for great stop by stand in keeper Matthew O'Mahony and they were unlucky to see a great shot hit the post and rebound to safety. Corinthians had some great chances but were left down by a lack of composure in the penalty box. The breakthrough came after a free kick from Cian O'Regan wa added to by Daniel Kingston and an incoming Mark Purcell sent an unstoppable shot to the net. The second half saw more great football from both sides and Corinthians had a great chance to go two up but Adrian Twomey was unlucky with his effort. The equaliser came soon afterwards and what a
beauty is was. A crooss from the left was cleared and the Youghal winger unleashed an unstoppable shot from 25 yards that gave Matthew O'Mahony no chance. The winner came with a few minutes to go. Michael Kenneally and Mark Purcell combined to find Joe Mc Sweeney on the right and his cross found Jonathan Russell who finished to the net with a great right footed shot. After a recent run of poor results, it was great to see the efforts of all the players rewarded with a win. Team: M.OMahony, C.O'Regan, L.Harris, D.Barrett, A.Twomey, M.Kenneally, M.Purcell, D.Kingston, K.Horan, J.Mc Sweeney. Subs:D O'Leary for K.Horan, A.OMara for J.Mc Sweeney & E.O'Brien for J.Russell

Douglas hurlers through to Munster Final It is quickly turning into a golden year for the Douglas hurlers. Dungarvan provided the opposition at Fraher Field on Sunday afternoon. After a sluggish opening, Douglas found their rhythm to lead by two points at the interval before increasing the intensity on the changeover to record a devastating 2-22 to 1-09 victory. As always, Eoin Cadogan was commanding at the back, Colin O’Mahony and Barry Fitzgerald won the midfield battle while in attack Mark Harrington was at his clinical best. Playing against the slight first half breeze Stephen Moylan grabbed the games opening point. Richard Murphy added a couple of frees while Mark Collins and O’Mahony also got on the score sheet but having scored the games opening goal Dungarvan remained in contention. In the second half Harrington exploded into life and a shell shocked Dungarvan had no answer. In the thirty sixth minute Odhrán Mulrooney created the opening and Harrington pounced to goal. Ten minutes later Collins and Murphy conspired to release Harrington and once again the Dungarvan goal keeper was beaten. With the game over as a contest Douglas introduced a succession of substitutes and now look forward to a munster hurling championship final. Meanwhile, in 1982 when Douglas, captained by Joe O’Brien, defeated a fancied Mallow team in Fermoy to win their first under 16 “A” county football title, a pipe band greeted the team and bus load of supporters to lead the victory parade through the December fog, up the village and into the club. Given that the ’82 win was only Douglas’ second grade “A” underage success since 1958, naturally it was greatly celebrated. Nineteen years later, current senior stars Mark Harrington and Eoin Cadogan were the corner stone of a Douglas side to repeat the feat when Kevin Mulcahy’s late point edged out Ballincollig by a solitary score. In 2002 a Finbarr Bermingham managed team completed backto-back titles. Last Saturday afternoon, Ballincollig provided the final opposition as Douglas were crowned champions for the fourth time.

Douglas were two points in arrears at the interval and with scores proving difficult to procure in the swirling breeze the Douglas support was submerged in an air of despondency as the rain began to fall. Meanwhile, in the dressing room Cathal Collins emerged from the shadows, stepped forward and delivered an oration that has rendered the Al Pacino “game of inches” speech from “Any Given Sunday” redundant among aspiring sports psychologists. Drama continued to unfold as selector Anthony Delea ducked out of the way just in time as a tray of water bottles were sent hurling towards the dressing room door. Thankfully, the players responded in the affirmative to Collins’ hair dryer treatment and in the words of Tadhg Kenneally were a different animal when the game resumed. Douglas forged a lead as the game reached a climax before Podge Walsh’s goal completed a famous victory on a scoreline of 2-13 to 2-05. Inspirational captain Caolan Mulrooney collected the cup on his team mates behalf. Finally, the club annual general meeting is fixed for Wednesday 25th November. Start time is 7.30pm. Douglas Community School Athletics Douglas Community School athletes continued their outstanding Cross-Country season with some great individual and team performances at the Munster u11-u19 Cross-Country championships held at Tralee Racecourse. The course was testing for the athletes with plenty of mud but was mainly flat. First up was the u13 team racing over 1200m. These guys only took up the sport 8 weeks ago and what an impact they have made. Jack O’ Mahony led them home with a superb 5th place finish and he was ably assisted by Liam Harris 17th, Rory Casey 41st and Luke Varian 46th. The team finished a great

In the u15 2000m Eoin Bourke showed his class by powering his way to a 2nd place finish. This was a superb run from him as he came so close to winning. Billy Murphy continued his good form finishing 19th although he admitted afterwards to not feeling the best in the race. Behind him the team packed really well with John Durcan 21st, Alan Ring 22nd, Michael McLaughlin 27th and Gary McCarthy 28th. The team finished 2nd beaten by 6 points for the gold medals. Others to run well were Cillian Crowley, Jamie O’ Connell and Brendan Couch. Patrick Coleman, last years winner came 4th in the u17 4000m and was feeling a bit unwell throughout and will no doubt bounce back in the coming weeks. Behind them the team was packing superbly with Mark Seacy having a storming run for 8th and Emmet Bracken continuing his outstanding season coming 10th racing out of his age. Cullen Lynch was 15th and other great runs came from Jamie Sullivan 24th, Ian Tobin 25th and Andrew O’ Keeffe 28th. The ‘A’ team easily won the team title with the ‘B’ team finishing 4th. The boy’s u19 5000m race turned into a 3 man battle
Fr Mathews Basketball Club It was another very successful weekend for both our boys and girls teams as our teams continue their challenge for trophies in the Cork Leagues. There was a full set o fixtures in Douglas Community School on Saturday 7th November where a number of our boys teams played out local derby’s with St Anthony’s. Four games in total were played with Mathews coming out on top in 3 of the 4 matches. U12A: Fr Mathews 52 – 30 St Anthony’s Nest up were our U12A side coached by Mark O’Keeffe. This side in one of the most talented teams in the club and has an incredibly strong squad. This was evident throughout this game as coach O’Keeffe rotated his entire group of players with no let up in the scoring or pressure on their opponents. Players who do deserve a mention were Dylan Bourke (10 pts) and Devin O’Sullivan (12 pts) who were totally dominant in offence taking the ball to the basket and in rebounding under their own basket. Gary Pineda (8 pts) was also in fine form under his opponents boards. Taidgh O’Mahony and twins Ruairi and Connor also had great games in the guard positions. It was Devin O’Sullivan, however, who dominated the game with his power and ability under the boards at both ends of the court. This side demonstrated why they are now the clear favourites to retain the U12A title this season. U14A: Fr Mathews 38 – 19 St Anthony’s This was billed as a real derby match as Anthony’s were fresh from their shock but comprehensive victory over Neptune a couple of weeks ago. In that game Killian Lane had an incredible 40 points for St Anthony’s and he was the obvious threat to Mathews in this encounter. In Jack O’Mahony, however, Mathews have a incredible talent of their own and O’Mahony did not disappoint in this match as he hit 18 points of his own and kept Lane to just 10 points. Mathews tactics of playing David Curtin on Lane was a masterful tactic as Curtin stuck to him like glue cutting out his drives to the board and forcing him to pass up the ball on several occasions. Mathews defence was incredible throughout with every player hounding their immediate opponents and reducing their shooting opportunities to snap shots and forced drives which inevitably swatted away by O’Mahony and Michael Lynch (who ended up with 5 blocks and 5 points). One of the things that stands out in this team is the depth in all positions that Coaches Jamie Wilkinson and Deirdre O’Mahony have. This side are a joy to watch and play entertaining basketball throughout. Girls U12A: Fr Mathews 44 – 19 Blue Demons On the girls front there were big wins for Patsy Coade’s side as they stretched their winning streak to 6 - 0. They have started their season in fantastic fashion and are now leading their league with an undefeated record. Their power up and down the court and ability to score on the break is proving to be a real asset and hard to stop. The squad is full of talented young players with several having stepped up from the U10’s of last season. An exciting season lies ahead for these young girls. Girls U12A: Fr Mathews 42 – 12 Glanmire Another comprehensive victory for our U12 side and another game in which they break the 40 mark in scoring. The key factor with this side is, however, their ability to shut teams down as cane be seen from their last two games conceding just 12 and 19 points respectively. They are now unbeaten and will be strong challengers as the season progresses. If you would like your son or daughter to play basketball then feel free to contact Pat Connolly (Head Coach, Fr Mathews Basketball Club) at 087-7905049 or log on to our website at www.frmathews.net for further information on our club.
• Munster u11-u19 X-Country Tralee between Peter Hanrahan, Ennis’s Liam Markham and Limerick’s Cathal O’ Connor. Liam and Cathal are two of Irelands finest young distance runners. Peter ran along side them throughout and finished strong to take 2nd place narrowly behind winner Cathal O’ Connor. Brian Murray was a great 10th and with Alan O’ Brien 11th and Adam Kelleher 15th the team easily won the team title.
Major International Success for Cork Kickboxing Under the guidance of trainer Ian Kingston, Kickboxing competitors from Cork have completed an extremely successful year. Tony Stephenson achieved both World and European Kickboxing Championship titles, and Lily De La Cour became a European Kickboxing Champion. In September, at the WAKO European Kickboxing Championships for Juniors and Cadets, few weeks short of his eighteenth birthday Stephenson secured a European title, he had earned his place in the final competing against some top Slovakian, Russian and Slovenian fighters. Whilst this was a fantastic result, more was yet to come for Tony as he represented Ireland at senior level in the Austrian based WAKO World Kickboxing Championships held in October. Tony competed against older and more experienced fighters from Turkey, Russia, Ukraine and Poland, and maintained his composure throughout. His trademark kicking and speedy handwork resulted in him in winning a gold medal, barely one week after he officially became a senior, at 18 years of age. It was also at the WAKO European Kickboxing Championships, held in Croatia, that Lily De La Cour represented Cork to become European Kickboxing Champion. Lily beat Czech, Hungarian and Croatian fighters only to meet a much taller opponent, from Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the final. Miss De La Cour, however, was undaunted and won the fight easily to secure her first European title. Team-mate, Aidean Kingston fought his way to the semi finals and was beaten by a Croatian but secured himself a well earned bronze medal.

G.A.A. FOCUS Snippets from the local and National Scene By Pat Harrington Cork Football Where is Cork football situated following the defeat by Kerry in the all-Ireland final? There certainly are question marks over the performances of some of the more established players. It seemed that the management erred in not taking remedial action, especially down the spine of the team. This is not a doom and gloom scenario. One wonders if the management needs to revise the panel and bring in some fresh faces. Perhaps the panel is O.K. as it is. Certainly they may want to tinker with the makeup of the defence and I am thinking particularly of the full back line. Would Michael Shields be of greater benefit to the team on the half back line and Canty at full back? A target man Nicholas Murphy / Michael Cussen is required at full forward. As I’ve said before all the scribes and pundits can say Cork deserve an all-Ireland but sadly life does not award all-Ireland titles to Cork or any other county; the team must perform and win on final day. Here’s wishing Cork footballers every good fortune in 2010. Meetings November 15th and 22nd are potentially big days for Cork G.A.A. On the first date clubs are invited to send three representatives to discuss underage structures within the county. Hopefully I will attend and be in on the discussions. Personally I believe the divisions have become stale. Clubs are meeting each other too often and this is not good for the game. County championships at under 12 should be abolished; there is too much pressure on young kids. Emphasis should be on improving skills and not just on winning trophies. Greater effort must be made in retaining players and cutting down on fall-off. On November 22nd the senior set-up will be discussed – and in particular, club fixtures. Club Championships The provincial club championships and the allIreland series is a marvelous concept. For many clubs, perhaps more so at junior and intermediate level it offers clubs the opportunity to pit their wits and skills against teams from other counties and for some fortunate clubs to play in Croke Park – surely the ultimate prize. The pity about the provincial championships is that they are played at a time when conditions are at their worst and the weather is wet and windy. Dónal Óg I recorded the Late, Late Show on the night that Dónal Óg Cusack was featured. Dónal Óg is a very articulate man; all his answers are measured. I haven’t yet read the book. First and foremost I do not think that sportsmen or women should publish a book while still actively involved.
The book has got huge coverage on radio and television as well as well as countless columns of newsprint. Publicizing the fact that he is gay has captured people’s interest in the book. Did he actually need to make this fact known? Were not all those who needed to know already aware? Some put forward the view that it will help other people who are afraid to go public – well, maybe so. That said he has been abused and harassed in the past by rival fans. Will he not get much more flack from those people in the future? I believe it must be difficult for Dónal Óg’s parents. For me the whole episode was a private matter and not one for public consumption. That said, I am from a different generation. Well Done Well done to Douglas intermediate Hurlers who have qualified for the G.A.A. club Munster final by virtue of their emphatic victory over Dungarvan at Fraher Field on Sunday last. Congrats also to Douglas under 16 footballers who defeated Ballincollig in the final of the championship on Saturday. Watch the notice board for date and venue for the Munster club final or check into www.douglasgaa.com
Dolphin advanced to the quarter final of the AIB Cup with a 28-7 victory over Belfast Harlequins in Belfast last Saturday. A try from Barry O'Mahony and a Barry Keeshan penalty made it 8-0 at half time. Two more penalties from Keeshan and tries from debutant Cian Bohane and Niall O'Driscoll and a conversion made up the scores. Next weekend Dolphin travel to Dooradoyle to take on Garryowen in the AIB League, the AIB Cup quarter final is the following Saturday at home to Galwegians. The Junior 2's had a 28-15 victory over Cork Constitution in the J2 league. Dolphin's U/17's recorded a 9-0 victory ,courtesy of three Rory Pirata penalties over Cork Constitution in the U/17 league. The minis (U/8 to U/12) were all in action in a Blitz in Muskerry on Saturday. Unfortunately the weather conditions were very poor, some games were called up early in the driving rain.
More next week, Pat.
Tutor Graduation Special Olympics Ireland Introduction to Coaching Practices Colm Lenihan from Passage West. Co. Cork was one of the 28 Special Olympics Ireland volunteers to receive their Level 1 Tutor Development Certificate at a graduation ceremony in The Crowne Plaza, Blanchardstown, Dublin on Friday 30th October. The volunteers recently completed a tutor training course with Liam Moggan of Coaching Ireland, which will qualify them to deliver Special Olympics Ireland Introduction to Coaching Practices courses throughout the Special Olympics Ireland programme. For many volunteers, the first step on the (National Governing Body) NGB coaching ladder is a very daunting one and many felt that they needed some other type of course to help them make that transition, and so the Introduction to Coaching Practice course was developed by Special Olympics Ireland, supported and guided by Coaching Ireland. This was a major milestone in the coach education programme for Special Olympics Ireland Ireland as it dramatically increases the capacity of the organisation to deliver the Introduction to Coaching Practices courses throughout the island of Ireland. The Introduction to Coaching Practices course is an introductory level course designed to provide volunteers with the basic knowledge and skills required to coach Special Olympics athletes. 139 volunteers have already trained on the course materials since August this year and a number of other courses are planned before the end of the year. Presentation of certificates was made by Frances Kavanagh, Director of Sports Special Olympics Ireland and William Micklen, International equestrian coach, tutor and • Colm Lenihan, from Passage West, Co Cork author.
