Letters to the Editor frontdesk@douglaspost.ie

We’d love to hear from you. If you have any news, views or issues you’d like to see covered, write to the Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas West, Cork or by e-mail to frontdesk@douglaspost.ie Please include your name and address and a contact number. Letters may be edited due to space considerations.

Thank You South County ! Dear Editor, To date The Douglas Writers Group has held its monthly meetings at the Douglas library and for this accommodation we wish to express our sincere appreciation. However, our meeting times do not fit in with the new opening hours of the library which means we can no longer use this facility as our base. Our meetings will in future be held in The South County Bar & Lounge on the 2nd. Friday of each month. We wish to thank Tom & Colm O'Connor for the use of their excellent premises. Billy McCarthy, Douglas Writers Group.

Intercounty structures Dear Editor In response to an article published in your magazine, vol 6 issue 19, I have great respect and admire all those people who put in 100s of man hours training kids and teenagers to become Intercounty hurlers but unfortunately our Intercounty structures in Cork are not up to speed for to produce a wonderful team such as the one we had from the year ending 99' to the present day. In 2001 we won a minor all Ireland defeating Galway on a fantastic day in Croke park the pageant that day at the interval was the legend of Setanta? We have not captured an all Ireland minor title since then we also have not won an under 21 title since 98' that speaks volumes in itself. when our secondary school teams have failed to win Hearty Cups in the last number of years our minor and under 21 and

seniors have suffered greatly a big effort must be made to put good coaching structures in our schools and if that happens I have no doubt that we will reap the rewards in the years to come in cork hurling Córcaigh Abú Regards Thomas Roche [debomber@hotmail.com]

GORGEOUS GUSSIE! Dear Editor Anyone remember the 30-6-1949? Wimbledon’s staid courts have taken many changes of fashion in their stride and this year’s sensation, the lace-trimmed panties peeping from beneath the white dress of the American Gussie Moran, will doubtless lose their notoriety as fast as May Sutton’s knee length skirt in 1905, Suzanne Lenglen’s bare arms and Helen Jacob’s shorts. “Gorgeous Gussie’s” lace trim stirred up a near riot among courtside Press photographers during her early singles matches, and caused something of a rift between the upright members of the All-England Club and the outfit’s flamboyant designer, Wimbledon perennial, Teddy Tinling. Regards, Neil O’Donoghue. Greenhills

Thank you from Trócaire Dear Editor, I would like to take this opportunity to thank your readers for the fantastic support they gave to Trócaire's annual Lenten campaign this year. Without the sup-

port of communities throughout Co. Cork Trócaire simply wouldn’t be able to continue our work with the world’s poorest people. This year's campaign focused on hunger and the fact that for the first time in history a billion people in the world don’t have enough food. Thanks to your support Trócaire’s work is making a real difference. A perfect example of this is Josienne Umumarashavu from Rwanda. Josienne featured on the Trócaire box in 2004 when she was thirteen and her mother was finding it difficult to grow enough food to feed her family. Now, with Trócaire’s help, Josienne’s mother is able to support the family and Josienne is looking forward to going to university. Even though we are going through tough economic times here at home, Irish people have once again shown their generosity toward the world’s poor, who need it most. Yours sincerely, Justin Kilcullen Director Trócaire

Irish Council Against Blood Sports Dear Editor, Despite an earlier admission that it would be doomed to failure, the Department of the Environment's National Parks and Wildlife Service is incredibly proceeding with a €1 million mink massacre. In the NPWS-commissioned "Review of mink predation and con-

trol" report, it is clear that as long as Ireland's shameful fur farms remain, attempting to control mink is a waste of time and money. "Escapes from fur farms continue to threaten the wildlife of Ireland by adding to the feral mink population, even if the feral population is managed," it states. "Escapes from fur farms would invalidate any attempts to eradicate feral populations." The futile operation is expected to cost taxpayers €1,062,425 which will be spent on dogs, traps, rifles, boats, quad bikes and cars. It also pays six trappers a total of half a million euro over five years for the "well placed shots" that will smash through mink skulls and "destroy their brains". The actual threat posed by the villainized vison is believed to be overstated. According to RTE's Mooney Goes Wild website "the overall impact of mink in Ireland has not been as catastrophic as was first predicted". However, if mink are as troublesome as the NPWS claim, the sensible solution surely lies in shutting down the fur farms from which 33,000 mink have reportedly escaped over the years. It is these depraved hellholes (where animals are gassed and electrocuted to death) that are responsible for mink coming to be part of the ecosystem. Yours sincerely, Philip Kiernan Irish Council Against Blood Sports Tel: 044 93 49848.

Weird Week I’ve had a weird week. I went to the supermarket on Sunday evening to get school lunch things. I paused in the vegetable section and decided that we needed spuds. After much internal debating, I settle on a bag of roosters and continued on my way. It is my habit that rather than hauling my trolley down every aisle, I abandon it every so often and go foraging. I then come back with an armful of items and dump the lot in the trolley. I left the trolley in the beverages section and went looking for sandwich bags three aisles over. When I came back I noticed that my roosters were missing. I dashed down to the check outs to find the thief or at the very least to close off their escape. Standing on tippy toes, I craned my neck and did a visual sweep of the entire check out area which is not easy to do when you are only five foot tall. One of the check out girls asked what was wrong. I said, “Someone has stolen my spuds” to which she replied, “But sure, who’d do that?” Feeling foolish, I walked slowly back to my trolley. I met the manager of the shop coming the other way holding out my bag of spuds at arms length. With a satisfied smirk, he placed the bag of roosters back in the trolley. I was bewildered. “Did you take my spuds?” “No”, said he, “but I caught the man who did.” “How

did you know they were mine?” said I. “Because I was watching him and I caught him in the act. Apparently, you had the last bag of roosters and he wanted them.” I told him he was a hero and I quickly finished my shopping. When I got home, I told my mother-in-law the tale of the near stolen spuds. She said that it wasn’t stealing since I hadn’t paid for them yet. I spluttered in indignation, “Surely there is some supermarket etiquette that once an item is off the shelf and in your trolley it’s hands off, Matey!” The following evening, I was driving home past Douglas church when my husband rang me on my mobile phone. Being the conscientious citizen that I am, I decided to park the car before continuing the call. I made sure that I didn’t park in the disabled spot or on the double yellow lines nor too close to the bridge. In fact, I decided to go one better and to mount the pavement all together. I was gabbing away on the phone when in front of me appeared a man and his wife out for an evening stroll. As they approached my car, they parted. The wife went to the right of me onto the lawn in front of the church and the man went to the left. As the man went to pass me, he stopped and glared in the window. I looked up at him, rolled down the window and • Where to buddy?... Lenny Burnes, Harley Davidson Enthuasist with one year old Arwynn O'Donoghue at the Launch of Ireland Bike Fest 2010, in Killarney. said, “What?” He said, “You have forced me to walk out onto the road.” I looked around me and said, “But there are no cars coming, you’ve plenty of space.” He marched on. I checked his progress in the rear view mirror and saw that he had stopped about 20 yards beyond me and with hands on hips, continued to glare back at me. His wife was long gone. I sniggered down the phone to my husband, “Does he honestly expect me to move?” The man walked on again but seemed to change his mind. He turned back and marching up to within 10 yards of the car; he drew out his mobile phone and took a photograph. Now I was

nervous. I hung up and drove home. I told the mother- in-law what happened. She said that it was against the law to park on the pavement and that he’ll probably send that photo to the gardai.” I was shocked. “But half of the cars in Cork are parked on the pavement, why aren’t the guards out slapping arrest warrants on those people. She shrugged. So far, no men in snappy suits and peaked caps have appeared at my door. When they do, I will go quietly. I’m hoping that this man was just having a bad day and I was the final straw. I have not parked on a pavement since.

DOUGLAS COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION News (With Helen Fox PRO) Business Front Competition The Tidy Towns committee are running a Business Front Competition in Douglas in the run-up to the Tidy Towns Competition, in order to enhance the village as a working and living space and maintain it to the highest standard. All businesses in the general Douglas area will be included. The competition will be judged on a number of categories, including general tidiness, business front façade, appearance and freshness. Results will be published. Details of the competition have been circularized to shops and businesses. If you need any more information or clarification, please contact the Tidy Towns office at the DCA Centre at 4894955, or phone Janice during office hours at 4892955, which are Mon, Tue, Fri. 9 am – 1 pm Wed., Thurs. 2-4 p.m. St. Luke’s School Gardens Our neighbour, St. Luke’s N.S., have planted up eight individual gardens, each one allocated to a class in the school. It will be exciting to see how these childrens’ gardens develop over the coming months and we applaud the efforts of all who helped to make this happen. Their efforts will be documented and included in the Tidy Towns application for this

year’s competition. Sympathy to Family of Mona Brennan We would like to offer sympathy to the family of Mona Brennan who died recently after a long illness. Mona was the Chairperson of Douglas Senior Citizens for many years and a wonderful organiser. She organized many

outings, parties, get-togethers and activities of all sorts for the seniors of Douglas for many years, very much supported by her husband, Michael. He and her son and daughters will miss her greatly. Social Welfare Facilities A Social Welfare Officer attends

FALSE CHARITIES ARE DAMAGING THOSE WHO REALLY NEED OUR HELP THROUGHOUT the Douglas area householders are being bombarded with stickers and leaflets from people masquerading as charities asking us to leave out bags of clothes, household goods and shoes to give to people in need. Most of the stickers carry pictures of hungry or crying children and have company contact details at the bottom. Beware. They may be a hoax. Bin them. We don’t know where the goods are going or what is happening with them but be aware that your good intentions may not be benefiting those you intended to help. Legitimate not for profit charities in Cork are loosing up to 50% of their collections to these false operations and this is a very serious problem. We do not want to see genuine charities damaged because people are making genuine donations to organisations under false impression or because there is a lack of enforcement of rules and regulations governing charities. The Minister for Community, Equality and Gaeltact Affairs, who has jurisdiction over this area, has informed me that the Charities Act 2009, which was enacted last year, will “address this situation” and will have a publicly accessible Register of Charities upon which any charity operating in Ireland must be registered. But, it will take several years for this to come in to play! This is not good enough. He has agreed that he is aware of the severity of the situation and if so, he needs to hurry up and get the structures in place. There are too many victims here - the genuine donators, the reputable charities and, most importantly, those who are in need. A list of Irish companies with genuine registered charity licences is available on www.revenue.ie

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn

Last week it was Itasca, Illinois and this week it’s New England. As mentioned it previously appears there are no borders in poetry. Carole Spearin McCauley of Hanover, New Hamshire is glad to discover the Douglas Post Poetry Corner. She thanks us for our attention to poetry and sent a brief poem-”Moira--Safe at Aunt’s House.” It was inspired by an Irish woman whom she met during a book research trip in Iceland, where she worked. Indeed, she’s about the most hopeful--and lyrical-person Carole ever met. In our current nonfiction, sound-bite culture, sounding poetic--as the Irish can--is a jewel to treasure and the “community connector” by which all of us can share experiences. Carole is a medical writer/editor, the author of 12 books, both nonfiction and mystery novels. Her short work (poetry, fiction, essays, interviews, reviews) has appeared in about 200 periodicals, anthologies, and online sites. Seven pieces and a photo have won prizes in national or international contests that include USA Today (haiku) and Radio Netherlands Worldwide (humorous verse about human cloning). Four chapters of her latest novel ms., How She Saved Her Life, appear soon in North Atlantic Review (Stonybrook, Long Island). She earned a recent M.A. in writing at Manhattanville College, Purchase, NY.

Moira---Safe at Aunt’s House The girl treads the street’s cobbles. Behind her, windows shuttered---blank against gray-grim lid of sky. Sea wind blows snow tonight. The girl leaves that house of stones and bones where Mam shrinks and Da sulks in drink... again. Eight bairns there, babying down the cradle. The girl scrunches her face, hunches inside only-coat’s velvet collar, one button yet undone. The girl’s cold hand clutches coins saved in pocket from Mam’s biscuit box. Bus man needs them to deliver Moira---safe at Aunt’s house.

• Sean Moylan book launch

“Being no warmer of benches, I never sat hand-idle. What Eye doesn’t see, Heart doesn’t grieve---at first. Left that farm on its sea-cliff, stopped with my aunt, did teacher’s college, parish-work here in Iceland. When the marriage wheel spun, I side-stepped. Better lang-loose than ill-tethered, I say. “But I do miss home—that great domain of sky and stone, wind-cold tracks against the sky. Ah, Ireland’s old as the world’s old. How Mam said, ‘God loves you, girl, and you can sit on cold hands.’ I’ll sail home some day. No matter winter’s frost, if summer’s gold awaits back at Aunt’s house.” Carole Spearin McCauley Send your poem to ‘The Poetry Corner’ / Douglas Post. Unit 14. Cllr Kieran McCarthy

Funding for Environmental Projects Independent Cllr Kieran McCarthy is calling on communities, individuals, not for profit groups, or organisations to avail of this year’s Local Agenda 21 Environmental Partnership Fund. The Department of the Environment is offering funding towards projects or initiatives that contribute to increasing local levels of environmental awareness; or those which promote building greener, more sustainable communities. Commenting Cllr McCarthy noted: “A wide variety of projects and schemes have been supported under the Fund in previous years ranging from community gardens, allotments and compost schemes to rainwater harvesting systems – from ecological educational initiatives to environmental exhibitions. Projects should focus on environmental awareness and actions which complement national environmental policies such as those on Waste, Biodiversity, Climate Change and Sustainable Development”. Application forms and further information on the Local Agenda 21 Environmental Partnership Fund and can be obtained from the Department’s website www.environ.ie. Under the environment section. Completed forms should be returned to the relevant local authority by Friday 28th May 2010. Also European funding is available for environmental projects at http://ec.europa.eu/environment/life/index. htm. DouglasPostAd:Layout 1 18/08/2009 12:00 Page 1

Cllr. Laura McGonigle

Gus Healy Pool Update At last week’s council meeting, I tabled a question to the City Manager on the possible routes that can be explored by Cork City Council in order to develop the Gus Healy Pool in Douglas. Since I joined Cork City Council, it is an issue that arises continuously. The Government recently confirmed that there will be no new Local Authority Swimming Pool Programme in the immediate future. To develop a new pool in Douglas would cost a phenomenal amount of money, approximately €12million – much beyond the reach of Cork City Council. Last year, City Council spent in excess of €150,000 to replace the roof on the pool. In his reply to my question, the City Manager, outlined that Cork City Council secured a proposal for the provision of a new pool in Douglas by way of public private partnership a number of years ago. However, a majority of the members of Council did not wish to see any private sector involvement and accordingly the proposal was rejected by Council. If it is the wish of the Council to reconsider this approach, the matter can be revisited. It is unlikely that funding will be forthcoming from the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism in the foreseeable future, for such projects. So for the next council meeting I have submitted a motion which reads: “That Cork City Council would seek expressions of interest from likely partners to redevelop the Gus Healy Swimming Pool”. A report will prepared on this motion which will then be brought before full council in a number of weeks. Once I am in receipt of this I will make it available here. I will continue to lobby for our pool to be redeveloped, but in the interim you can be assured that I will work to ensure that the pool is available, and I will push for more public hours – it is of huge concern to me that the public hours are limited to just one hour a day, between 1pm and 2pm.

Paddy was the first contestant that was asked to take part, he willingly agreed, eventually the Community Association finished up with eight brilliant contestants. The Ballinlough Heat was held on Wednesday 17th February in the Community Centre. The adjudicators said the standard was very high, but there can only be one winner, Paddy was chosen. Anti- Litter and Graffiti Campaigns Funding has been allocated to both city and county councils to help them to tackle litter and graffiti. Cork City Council is to receive €20,000 and Cork County Council will receive €40,000. The funding comes as part of a national allocation by the Dept of Environment, Heritage and Local Government of €1.5m to local authorities across the country. While the amount of money allocated under the Anti-Litter and AntiGraffiti Awareness scheme and under the Tourist Season Anti-Litter Scheme is relatively modest, it will provide councils with some scope to address the scourge of litter and graffiti at local level. The awareness programme provides valuable support to councils who wish to encourage responsible behaviour by members of our local communities, through various promotional and publicity-based schemes, including arts-based initiatives, competitions, anti-litter materials and advertising. The Tourist Season Anti-Litter Scheme provides for the deployment of staff and resources to clean up areas of scenic importance, and areas key visitor destinations. I strongly urge all local authorities to get moving on this by identifying projects that will qualify for funding from these schemes and by getting their applications in by the deadline.

Well Done! Well done to all those involved in organising last Saturday night’s Gala Concert to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Ballyphehane & District Pipe Band. The event was held in the Church of the Assumption and opened with a special guest performance by the Presentation Secondary School Choir. The Cork Male Voice Choir and the Chorus of Opera Cork gave a broad range of performances on the night along with accompanying Soprano soloists Louise O‘Sullivan and Fiona O’Reilly. Special mentions go to Frank Buckley who acted as concert narrator and to all those who gave their support in putting together what was a most enjoyable evening.

A €10 CHARITY DRESS SALE’ Hi, My name is Jade Tett and I am a pass pupil of Regina Mundi College in Douglas and I’m currently studying Biological Science in C.I.T. During the Summer I am going volunteering to Zambia in Africa with an organization called SERVE. SERVE is a development and volunteering organisation committed to working with the poorest people in the world. It assigns up to 90 volunteers per year, supporting programmes that help transform the lives of some of the poorest communities in the world. The first SERVE volunteer initiative involved twelve young Irish adults working with a range of development partners in the Philippine islands for ten weeks in 2003. This overseas experience prompted a vision that has seen SERVE evolve into a development and volunteering organisation working

with partners in Brazil, South Africa, Thailand, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and the Philippines and Zambia. Zambia is a land locked country in southern Africa with a tropical climate. I will be going to Mazabuka which is located in the southern province of Zambia. Almost 50,000 people live there. Like most African countries its sub-divided into compounds. Most people work on the sugar plantations and copper mines which dominate the city of Mazabuka. The average salary is between 250-300 Kwacha equivalent to approx 60 euro a month, but in fact much of the population is surviving on far less. Unfortunately the situation in Mazabuka is less than optimal, despite that much of the people are suffering from poverty and illness, the greatest cause of death is AIDS. The average life expectancy age is 37 years old. Such a low expectancy rate results in a high number of orphans and children living on the streets. Much of the children do not receive the opportunity to get a chance of education and therefore their situation often leads to alcoholism,

Carrigaline Main Street to be fully resurfaced Local Fianna Fáil T.D. Michael McGrath has welcomed confirmation from Cork County Council that it intends to resurface the full length of Carrigaline Main Street next month. Deputy McGrath and FG Deputy Simon Coveney, as two local T.D.’s, met with a delegation of senior Council officials today to emphasise the importance of resurfacing the full length of Carrigaline Main Street. At the meeting, it was confirmed that the Council now intend to resurface from the Heron roundabout to Cogan’s corner. It had been originally expected that the stretch of Main Street between Bank of Ireland and Cogan’s corner would not be resurfaced. “Cork County Council last year sought a specific improvement grant from the Department of Transport to resurface the Main Street. I was delighted to take up this issue with Minister Noel Dempsey, and €300,000 funding was sanctioned for this badly needed work,” stated Deputy McGrath. “I understand the resurfacing work is expected to get underway after the June bank holiday weekend and is expected to take up to 2 weeks. I appreciate that local residents and the business community have been seriously inconvenienced by works on Main Street. However, this is essential work and the town will have a much improved Main Street next month when the new surface is laid,” concluded Deputy McGrath.

Cork Motor Club is delighted to announce that they will host a Rallysprint event in the heart of Cork City on Sunday 30th May 2010. The event, which takes place in the grounds of the former Cork City Landfill site, property of the Cork City Council on the South City Link Road, will be run in conjunction with the Cork City Council and the Bishopstown & District Lions Club. All monies raised by the event will be donated to the St. Patrick's Hospital Marymount Hospice. This event would not be possible without the partnership . between Cork Motor Club and Cork City Council and the Bishopstown & District Lions Club, who are working closely to ensure that the event is a spectacular success. The site provides an ideal location for this event and which has the potential of attracting large number of spectators, and raising much needed funds for a very worthy cause. Toomey commented that the Cork City Rallysprint has the potential to attract up to

10,000 spectators. Cork Motor Club hopes it provide a major tourism and economic boost for the local economy. Clerk of the Course Jolinny Ryan said the event was being run in memory of Darren Swanton, a fellow Cork Motor Club member and friend. Darren was a big motorsport fan having competed and marshalled on various events. Darren was part of the Cork Motor Club group that marshalled on the first Rally Ireland making the trip with Johnny and Finian. Unfortunately, when Rally Ireland returned Darren was too sick to make the journey. He passed away in Marymount aged just 30 years. "Cork Motor Club previously staged a similar event around Fota Island in Cobh in the early 1980s which proved very successful. We are hoping that the Cork City Rallysprint wi,11 continue that success. The location provides ample space for safe viewing areas, in addition to recreational areas and a perfect location for all the family," a club spokesperson stated. Check out HYPERLINK"http://www. corkmotorclub.com"www.corkmotorclub.com for more information on the event over the coming weeks. This event is subject to the approval of Cork City Council and relevant local authorities, and the granting of a suitable permit.

Panic attacks A panic attack is a sudden episode of intense fear that develops for no apparent reason and that triggers severe physical reactions. Panic attacks can be very frightening. When panic attacks occur, you might think you're losing control, having a heart attack or even dying. Panic attacks were once dismissed as nerves or stress, but they're now recognized as a real medical condition. Although panic attacks can significantly affect your quality of life, treatment is very effective. Symptom Panic attack symptoms can make your heart pound and cause you to feel short of breath, dizzy, nauseated and flushed. Because panic attack symptoms can resemble life-threatening conditions, it's important to seek an accurate diagnosis and treatment. Panic attacks typically include a few or many of these symptoms: A sense of impending doom or death, Rapid heart rate, Sweating, Trembling, Shortness of breath, Hyperventilation, Chills, Hot flashes, Nausea, Abdominal cramping,

Chest pain and Headache. Panic attacks typically begin suddenly, without warning. They can strike at almost any time — when you're driving, at a shopping centre, sound asleep or in the middle of a business meeting. Panic attacks have many variations, but symptoms usually peak within 10 minutes and last about half an hour. You may feel fatigued and worn out after a panic attack subsides. Causes It's not known what causes panic attacks or panic disorder. Things that may play a role include: Genetics, stress and certain changes in the way parts of your brain function. Treatments and drugs The goal of treatment is to eliminate all of your panic attack symptoms. With effective treatment, most people are eventually able to resume everyday activities. The main treatment options for panic attacks are medications and psychotherapy. Both are effective. Your doctor likely will recommend starting with just one type of treatment. Researchers have explored a number of natural

remedies as possible treatments for anxiety disorders, including panic disorder. Studies to date have concluded that two alternative therapies, in particular, have potential in the treatment of panic disorder. Relaxation training and the nutritional supplement inositol. While panic attacks and panic disorder benefit from professional treatment, you can also help manage your symptoms on your own. Some of the lifestyle and self-care steps you can take include: Stick to your treatment plan. Avoid caffeine, alcohol and illegal drugs. Practice stress management and relaxation techniques. Get physically active. Get sufficient sleep. If you feel you suffer from some of the listed symptoms, make an appointment to see your G.P. If you would like further information on stress management solutions, contact Garvan at Lynch’s Pharmacy on 4366923.

Selective Mutism Hi Dr. Cronin, For as long as I can remember I’ve found it impossible to talk to certain people and ever since I was young I was very scared if not terrified to talk to anyone outside of my immediate family and a couple of close friends. I remember my parents were called into school to discuss teacher concerns of my silence in class and my non- participation in school social events and activities. I was incredibility expressive and talkative at home with my parents and one sister, but for some reason I would never talk to my older sister and brother. If anyone outside of my particular circle or comfort zone, including teachers, would ask me a question, I would answer by nodding or shaking my head if the answer required a basic yes or no response, and if not I would simply shrug my shoulders. This fear or shyness has stayed with me all my life and even today I continue to find it impossible to talk to anyone at work except my closest friend. Social events are equally restrictive and I will sit quietly listening to people continually going on with their thoughts and ideas without contributing anything to the conversation myself even though I’d have some great thoughts and ideas going on in my own mind. I’ve always thought that I was just a bit weird but now I’m beginning to think that I should do something about this extreme shyness that has followed me throughout my life. Is there anything you can do to help me or am I the only person and the shyest person in the world? - Brian Hi Brian, I can assure you that many people have similar difficulties and you are certainly not alone pertaining to the issues you’ve mentioned. In fact, the symptoms you describe would indicate the existence of a condition known as Selective Mutism. Formally known as elective mutism, a term one might be correct in assuming was an incorrect terminology and even from my own experience in treating the condition I can testify that an individual far from “elects” or “chooses” to be mute in a particular situation or around certain people, but simply find themselves totally unable to utter a single word due to the fear and other underlying subconscious forces that are at play, preventing speech. Selective mutism usually occurs during childhood and becomes obvious and noticeable when the child consistently fails to speak in

Unfortunately, due to the mannerisms associated with this condition the individual may quite often be wrongly perceived by others to be rude or arrogant when nothing could be further from the truth, in fact, most people with this condition would give anything to be able to speak freely and confidently in all situation, uninhibited by the underlying forces that are at work. Intriguingly, individuals with this condition will be perfectly able to speak and express themselves to some specific people, e.g., family members and/or close friends. Another aspect to the condition is the loathing of one’s own voice, not in all cases but in many, the person will actually detest hearing him or herself speak, this is a perception we set out to rectify in therapy. The individual with selective mutism may have an extreme fear of social embarrassment, be considered excessively shy, have an anxiety disorder and withdraw from social activity which may lead to even further isolation. This condition is quite treatable and in therapy there is a special emphasis on building confidence and self-esteem whilst seeking to identify triggers and issues that are causing the problem and to rectify false perceptions that are contributing to the condition. If you have concerns about any of the issues mentioned you should contact your local support group, doctor, health care provider or your psychotherapist, Now! CONTACT: DR. Minister Micheál Martin goes GREEN… to launch the new range of Electric Vehicles at the Pavilion, Ballygarvan. ‘The REVAi is the ideal low cost run about and a unique forward thinking purchase’. The Pavilion also stocks a range of power assisted electric bicycles. Recently, the Pavilion in Ballygarvan, Co. Cork has taken ‘going green’ to an exciting new level. Having recognised that the future for transport in Ireland is electric, the Pavilion is delighted to unveil The Ultimate Eco Accessory – The Reva Electric Car. Minister Micheál Martin visited the Pavilion in Ballygarvan on the 7th of May to lend his support to the launch of Ireland's lowest cost & lowest emissions electric car – the REVAi. In electric vehicle (EV) terms, REVA is a market leader. The REVAi is a stylish little runabout, hailed as the greenest car on the planet by Independent Newspapers. Running solely off electricity it cuts CO2 emissions and running costs by at least half. Electric cars are a clever lifestyle choice and are being used by those who want a second car for commuting, shopping or even just the school run. The REVAi electric cars are a fun, affordable and a cool option for eco/ environmentally conscious consumers. As the share of electricity derived from renewable energy in the power sector increases over time, electric vehicles simultaneously become cleaner. A REVAi can reduce the impact of motoring emissions per km by between 60% and 100% when charged by renewable energy. Even when taking into consideration the emissions generated at the power station to charge a REVAi, pollution is approximately 40% less than the cleanest hybrid. Owners mostly charge their REVA overnight, benefiting from off peak rates. A full “tank” costs just €1 and gives you 80km range which is often more than adequate for our daily driving. See table: REVAi Savings below Research conducted on low carbon cars in 2008 concluded that 93% of car journeys are less than 40kms and 97% are less than 80 kms. Hence, the REVAi can complete the vast majority of car journeys without the requirement to recharge. The Government has set a target of 350,000 electric vehicles on Irish roads by 2020. To support this, the ESB has begun to roll out a charging network across our towns and cities. The REVAi can be charged at home or at any power point, however the “on street charge stations” will make EV’s very convenient to everybody. The government has also just recently launched a grant incentive for the purchase of electric cars which will run from the 1st of January 2011 to the 31st of December 2012. A grant of €5,000 will apply to all battery powered electric vehicles (BEV’s) above €20,000. Cash grants of between €2,000 and €4,500 will

The REVAi is a small 3 door hatchback measuring 8ft 6’ long, 4ft 3’ wide with a tiny 10 ft turning circle, fitting in to half of a regular parking space. The car can accommodate two adults in the front and two children in the rear and the back seats can also fold down to increase cargo space. Home & Garden summer. Turn off heating under glass; clean and store heaters. Damp down regularly, especially where cucumbers are growing. Start feeding tomatoes and other greenhouse crops regularly. Take cuttings of sideshoots of poinsettias, dip in sand to stop bleeding and root in warmth. Propagate Christmas cacti by rooting stem segments. Take cuttings of regal pelargoniums in gritty compost.

Water Garden. Clear weeds from the edges of ponds, especially where there are stones, before they have time to establish.

In General Make time for routine "housework" around the garden: Deadhead early flowers, and remove weeds while they are still small. Plant out celeriac after fully hardening off plants.

Young @ Heart by Phil Goodman

It seems such a short time ago with the winter conditions we were enduring I was advising our older people to stay warm, take hot drinks etc. Thankfully the winter is behind us and we can enjoy some sunshine. As this is Melanoma month we all need to be aware of what can be done to prevent skin cancer which is constantly on the increase and rising every year by the year. By 2015 it is set to double. 80% of sun damage occurs before the age of 18. 90% of early Melanomas detected on time can be cured, so “early detection is essential”. Avoid exposure when the sun is at its hottest, apply two layers of sun protection to all exposed areas and also wear a hat and sunglasses, “enjoy the sun we may not see much of it”. A trip to Shangarry pottery is well worth a visit. We saw the potters with their skills making some beautiful pieces. It is a craft that is enjoying resurgence, and it is worth supporting our local industries in these recessional times. It is with regret we mourn the passing of Mona Brennan. Mona worked tirelessly for our community and helped so many. She will be sadly missed so we send our heartfelt sympathy to her husband and family.

The Firkin Crane, home of dance, hosts a lunchtime dance performance at 1pm Friday 21st May 2010. Tea and sandwiches will be served beforehand (suggested donation €5) This event is part of the Firkin Crane’s BLANK CANVAS Exchange Programme. The performance offers an opportunity to see original contemporary dance and to witness the emerging talent of dancers and choreographers in Ireland. The dancers are Lisa Cahill, Patric Cashman, Erika Charters, Karen Gleeson, Katrin Neue and Kasia Voetter. Some were based in Ireland, whilst others have traveled from America, Germany, England and Holland to work and study together, sharing their passion for contemporary dance. All are students of the MA in Contemporary Dance Performance, based at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance in the University of Limerick. The MA programme offers one year of advanced tuition in dance and somatic training techniques, with daily classes and intensive workshops under the directorship of Mary Nunan, a pioneer of contemporary dance in Ireland. The performance includes original ensemble and solo works choreographed by Mairead Vaughan, who is artistic director of Shakram Dance Company, and Liz Roche, artistic director of Rex Levitates Dance Company. The MA students worked with international dance artists such as Elena Gianotti, Mary Wycherley and Colin Dunne (former lead dancer of Riverdance and Celebrity Jigs ‘n Reels Fame) developing scores for improvisation and exploring different approaches to creating solo choreography. With the music industry in turmoil, record sales in decline and record labels taking the sweeping brush to their rosters, more and more music artists have had to take their careers in to their own hands and dig deep to find the resources to create their music. Artists then have to dig even

deeper to release a record in a hugely competitive retail market, battling to be heard and seen amidst the huge marketing and promotional campaigns, funded by the coffers of a handful of multinational labels. In April of this year, Cathy Davey released her first single since being dropped from EMI Records. Little Red slowly but surely stole its way up the airplay charts and one by one stations across the country came on board, bringing the track to a huge audience across the four corners of Ireland. It was the start of a truly positive home-made story amidst the doom and gloom of recessions and bank heists. That story begins a new chapter this morning with the news that Cathy’s third album, The Nameless, has debuted at the No. 1 position in the Irish Album Charts, the Independent Release Charts and the Irish iTunes Charts. A triple-crown result for a self funded young independent artist and proof that true talent can shine through. With the support of media in Ireland, in particular radio, Irish artists can build sustained careers in music. Thanks to airplay support for Cathy and a swell of critical acclaim, The Nameless is at No. 1 and Cathy Davey is a No. 1 artist.

(She even managed to comfortably fight off the combined power of ACDC and Iron Man!). While on the topic of Irish artists and such, the line up for Skibbereens’ Cork X Southwest festival has been announced. Its due to take place on Saturday July 31st. Some of the headliners include The Frank and Walters, John Spillane, Mick Flannery, Hot House Flowers, Luka Bloom with more to be announced at a later date. The one day festival will also feature the De Barra’s sitting room sessions, Eclectic Tent, Djs,

Members of the Pan Malaysian Islamic Party have objected to a planned concert by rap star Pitbull, deeming his lyrics and performance style as inappropriate. The hit-maker was scheduled to perform in Malaysia at a dance music festival, but his appearance was pulled after Islamic protesters gathered in Kuala Lumpur to express their distaste for the rapper. The leader of the protest Kamaruzaman Mohamad told Reuters why the group opposes his visit to the country saying: “It's bad enough that he is named after a dog, but if you watch his video clip on YouTube, his performance and lyrics are against Malaysian cultural norms." Malaysia is known for protesting concerts which have included artists such as Beyonce and Black Eyed Peas, I wonder will South Park have anything to say about the groups protests!!

Making Ice Cream The easiest and most affordable way of making ice cream and other types of frozen dessert is with your refrigerator freezer. In fact, some ice cream makers say it's the best way to make ice cream. And learning how to make homemade ice cream with this 3-step method is not complicated nor does it require much time or effort. Step One Simply follow the recipe to prepare the mixture, then sample it and adjust the ingredients to your own taste. Any recipe for making ice cream can be used. Grandma's old-time ice cream recipes are perfect for this. Step Two When you are satisfied with the taste, and the mixture is ready to freeze, pour it into a freezer container and seal it with the container's lid. If the container doesn't have a lid, then carefully seal the container tightly with aluminum foil. After making homemade ice cream for a while, you'll find that shallow freezer containers or cake pans work best as they allow the mixture to freeze quickly. Here are some tips on how to use them: If the mixture contains whipped ingredients, then immediately place the sealed container into the freezer If the mixture contains ingredients that are not whipped, first place the sealed container in the refrigerator compartment for 20 minutes or so to chill, and then place it in the freezer to freeze If the mixture has been cooked, it may need to sit in the refrigerator for several hours to chill thoroughly before placing it in the freezer to freeze Step Three After the mixture has been sitting in the freezer for 20 minutes or so, take it out, and if it has been in there long enough you should notice a thick layer of ice crystals coating the inside of the container. Unseal the container and using a wooden spoon or spatula, scrape the ice crystals that have formed on the sides into the center, and then beat the mixture thoroughly to prevent the further formation of ice crystals and to lighten it with air. The tiny pockets of air beaten into the ice cream make it smooth and easy to scoop. Ice cream without beating is similar to bread that has

not risen. Therefore, to be creamy smooth, ice cream requires beating. Try to not let the semi-frozen mixture melt too much while beating. An electric hand-held beater can be used to great advantage and it will make this step much easier. Reseal the container and return it to the freezer. Leave it for another 30 minutes or so and then repeat the scraping and beating process. If the mixture freezes too hard, simply place it in the refrigerator compartment until it is again just soft enough to beat. This is common practice when you make your own ices. Depending on the ingredients used and the temperature of your freezer, you may have to repeat this step up to three or four times until the mixture is creamy smooth in texture, but firmly frozen. After the last beating, you may pack the ice cream in molds for freezing or simply reseal the container and return it to the freezer.

Southwestern Group Moto X The latest Southwestern Group event was a motocross held at a new track at Brinny near Bandon on Sun 9th May. A nice big open track and two minute lap times were the order of the day. Favourite as usual for the expert class was Bishoptown's John Barry on the no 1 Yamaha. But as the first expert race came off the line everybody was asking who was riding the number 43 Yamaha 450at the front. It turned out to be 48 year old veteran rider from Grange Jonny Buckley, coming out of retirement for the one day on a borrowed bike. For three laps Buckley led the way before the lack of bike time began to show. Barry was first to pass then it was Aiden Beausang from Midleton on his Suzuki. So it was Barry once again taking the win with Beausang finishing second and young Darragh Buckley from Donnybrook in third. Jonny Buckley finally ending up fifth. The clubman class produced some cracking racing also with Englishman Glen Steele on his Yamaha having his hands full all day with two Grange lads Carion O'Brien and Dan Cronin both on Hondas. This Saturday and Sunday the Southwestern Group will hold a two day practice/fun weekend at Brinny, all welcome and there is overnight camping. Tramore Athletic FC With Barry Gould Umbro U13 Division 4

Tramore Athletic 2 Kinsale 1 The Tramore Athletic U13s continued their impressive bid for promotion with a vital victory over Kinsale at Tramore Park on Saturday morning by two goals to one. The match was a thrilling and enthralling contest from the first whistle with Kinsale flying out of the traps and pinning Tramore back deep in their own half. Kinsale made their pressure tell by converting the fourth of four great chances they created in their impressive opening spell. The loss of this early goal did not dent Tramore's confidence in fact it seemed to inspire them to launch wave after wave of attacks on the Kinsale goal as the match turned on its head. A fantastic one two between Edozie Ogbene and Ryan McCarthy spilt open the Kinsale defence to allow Ryan McCarthy coolly finish to equalise for Tramore. The match at this point completely opened up with chances, shots, saves and near misses at both ends of the field with both goals living charmed lives. The sheer weight of chances eventually had to tell and the vital third goal of the game came Tramore's way. Olan Murphy who had started the match at centre back but who had pushed into midfield to stem the early Kinsale pressure made the most of his greater freedom to attack from the middle of the park when he collected the ball near the centre circle and drove forward before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner to grab the winner for Tramore and cap a man of the match performance. The Tramore Athletic AGM will take place at our clubhouse in Tramore Park, South Douglas Road on Tuesday 25th May at 7pm. All members and parents are kindly requested to attend. New members are also welcome to sign up on the night. All Tramore Athletic members wish to pass on their congratulations to the Tramore Athletic U11 team who have secured promotion to Division 2 following their five goals to one victory away to St Mary's. The display and scoreline was typical of a season in which the U11's

Douglas GAA News

Douglas Hall AFC

Douglas 0-15 Ballincollig 2-08

With Garrett Lyons

Douglas recorded a fantastic first round win in the first round of the Cork County Senior Football Championship at Ovens on Sunday 16th May. Forced to line out without inter county defender Eoin Cadogan, Douglas' John Collins excelled after being thrust into a wing back role alongside Eoin Cotter and captain Johnny Lane. Up front Mark Harrington and Shane McCarthy grabbed most of the Douglas points. John Farrell once again demonstrated his love of the big occasion with an inspired performance on the forty and Odhrán Mulrooney scored a brilliant second half point. Niall Gannon was prominent in the Douglas defence during an opening period in which Tom Sheehan and Harrington were both unlucky not to goal. However, after playing against the breeze Douglas trailed by two points at the interval. At the start of the second half Douglas got to grips with the game and took the lead. However, Ballincollig fought back and Douglas goalkeeper Brian Boyle denied them a goal when

he dived low to his right to pull off a fantastic save. Meanwhile, Richard Murphy prospered after moving to midfield while Ray Keating impressed after coming on for the injured Frank Tobin. With the side’s level as the final whistle approached, both sides sought a leader to win the contest. Thankfully for Douglas, Johnny Lane answered the call and after a burst along the left wing curled over a late point to dramatically seal Douglas' win. Well done to the Douglas players and management trio of Der O'Regan, Mick Doyle and John Paul Kiely for overcoming the first championship hurdle of the season. Meanwhile, the Douglas minor hurlers defeated Donoughmore by 2-17 to 0-12 in the non-exam 12 a side league. Josh Khra and David Hanrahan scored the goals while Seán Connolly and Brian Cuthbert played very well, but it was of Alan Murray who was the Douglas man of the match with a top class performance.

The Seniors were beaten 2-0 away to Malahide Utd in the FAI Senior Cup, some poor finishing and defensive errors cost the 'Hall dearly. However last Wednesday in Ballea Pk the Seniors came out the right side of a penalty shoot out 5-4 against Carrigaline. The 'Hall were behind after 5 mins and despite creating chances were running out of time before Craig Duggan flicked in a header to bring the game to extra time and pens. Ian Sullivan saved the first pen and that proved enough. The Beamish Cup final v Avondale is fixed for next Sunday at 7pm in Turners Cross and all support will be greatly appreciated. This is followed by their last league game away to Avondale on Thur, May 27th and if successful against Blarney on Thur the O'Connell cup final is on in Camden, Crosshaven on Sunday, May 30th at 11am. The MSL jnrs beat Glasheen 3-1 last week in the cup quarter final with Killian Murphy scoring a hat-trick, this brought them into a semi final away to Ringmahon last Friday where the home team ran out 2-1 winners with John McCarthy scoring for the 'Hall. Their last game of the season is quite an important one with a League playoff against Rockmount in Casement Pk on Wed at 7pm. Hopefully Tom Corcoran's team can get the result to secure the league for the 3rd year in a row. The AUL Jnrs stay in contention for their league after a 2-0 win away to long time leaders Leeside and a 4-0 home win over Carrigtwohill. Postal Celtic are the visitors to Moneygourney on Thur night before travelling to Murphy's Farm to take on Kilreen on Saturday.

College Corinthians AFC Local Cup Congratulations to our Under 11, Under 13 and Under 14 and under 15 squads who this week have joined their under 12 club mates in the finals of the local Cup. The Under 14’s started the ball rolling on Tuesday night when they had a comfortable 5-0 win over Innishvilla with Daragh Kiely scoring (4) and Dave Meaney also on the scoresheet. On Wednesday night our Under 13’s were involved in a much tighter affair but managed to squeeze past Lakewood on a 3-2 scoreline, Evan Galvin, Dylan Walsh and Alex O’ Sullivan scored for Corinthians Our Under 11’s came from behind twice as they recorded a fine 4-2 win over Springfield Ramblers last night, harry Shanahan (2) and Brian Cotter

(2) scored for Corinthians. (See Report Below) • Douglas Hall U-11 Div. One squad Finally our Under 15’’s completed a great week for the Club when an Erick O’ to level pegging when Harry Connor goal proved the difference as Shanahan pounced to score. Corinthians held off a late Greenwood Ross Welch and Colin O’Brien onslaught to reach the final were controlling midfield at Congratulations to everyone involved this stage while Daniel Cullen on a fabulous achievement and best and Sean desmond mopped of luck in the finals everything at the back. U11 Local Cup Semi final Springfield Ramblers 2 Corinthians 4 Corinthians came through a hard fought contest against Springfield Ramblers. the home side went one up with a well taken header from a corner. But this did not phase Cornthians and they were soon back

Ramblers were quick out of the blocks in the second half with a goal within the first 20 seconds. Once again Corinthians dug deep and levelled again through Bryan Cotter. The visitors were the stronger at this stage and soon edged ahead with a goal from Harry Shanahan.

The game was put beyond Ramblers when Bryan Cotter scored a thunderous fourth. Stephen Jermyn saved well from a long range effort at the end to keep the two goal margin

G.A.A. FOCUS Snippets from the Local and National Scene By Pat Harrington I welcome the launching of the G.A.A strategic plan for the future, by the Cork County Board. The area that I find to be of most interest is that of the body responsible for looking after the age groups 13 to 18. One body will now be responsible for this group. There will be a pilot period of two years. At present there are eight divisions each playing their own league and championship – at under 14 and under 16. The county championships are at present run by the County Bórd na nÓg. Under the new structure the divisions will be replaced by four regions. In the past I would be of the opinion that those looking after the under 16s were pulling in the opposite direction to the Minor section. There will be a lot of work for this one body. In my view the divisions had become outdated. There was no advantage for clubs to be playing the same teams year after year. Yes, the divisional officers did work hard but the system had gone past its sell-by date and needed freshening up. There is to be a master plan for fixtures – something that is long overdue. In the past this area has caused a furore as clubs and players have suffered years of fragmented fixtures. Continuity and games on a regular basis must be the key to the success of this pilot programme. A piece from another heading that catches the imagination is “Complete a three-year marketing plan to optimize the value of the Cork brand”. I am not sure what this constitutes but let me suggest some ideas: A shop in Páirc Uí Chaoimh selling Cork jerseys, scarves, socks, tracksuits, training tops and fashionable polo shirts. 40 - Thur 20 May '10

Why not encourage local businesses to display Cork colours when the season is in full swing? Encourage local councils to fly Cork flags, as the Munster flags are displayed in Charleville at appropriate times. Encourage our senior intercounty players to visit schools regularly. Make more use of local radio to promote our games through weekday advertising. To be fair it must be said that Cork’s C103 does a great job on match days. Perhaps our organisation could give out small flags (as Munster do) on championship days. Street Leagues I was invited to conduct a coaching course in hurling with prospective Street Leagues coaches. I could feel very positive vibes from, firstly the numbers present, 14 / 15 people and secondly the enthusiasm they showed for the course. There were people there from diverse backgrounds, some with a reasonably good knowledge of the game. Among the almost all-male group was a young lady from Diarmuid Ó Mahúna’s, (Enniskeane) a school teacher. I would stick to one line of advice which I would give to anybody dealing with young players: First teach the basics – learning how to hold a hurley, the swing and striking action. It is compulsory for each player to wear a helmet whilst shin guards are strongly recommended. The hurley, with the tip of the bas placed on the ground should reach to just below the hip. Finally the key to becoming a good hurler is constant practice; this is where the Dads and Moms as well as older siblings and close friends come into play. Remember hurling is the most exciting, skillful and perhaps the fastest game in the world. Recently during a session someone present criticized what he had observed. In reply one of the coaches said out loud that if that person wished to attend the following Saturday and give us the benefit of his

superior knowledge then he would be more than welcome – the person in question didn’t oblige. Please be understanding and if you feel your experience would be of benefit we sincerely invite you to offer your services to this group. Congratulations Congratulations to David Hanrahan on his performance with the Cork Minor footballers. Cork now go on to meet Kerry in the Munster final. Well done to Douglas senior footballers on their great win over Ballincollig in the county championship. More next week, Pat.
