by George Thompson - Editor
O.N.E.T. Cdr. George Crosbie Naval Branch – 20 Years Old Last week the Cdr. George Crosbie Naval Branch O.N.E. celebrated the 20th anniversary of the forming, in May 1990 of the branch at Moore’s Hotel on Morrison’s Island. The branch paid a visit to City Hall on Fri 28th of May where we were hosted by deputy Lord Mayor Laura McGonigle and on the following evening there was a Bar-B-Q meal and music held at the Naval Base, Haulbowline. A great night was had by all with stories shared and friendships rekindled and forged. I want to congratulate my good friend Sean Buttimer who is a familiar face at the Pet Stand in Douglas Court and now even more familiar as the face in the Cork jersey in the Ulster Bank ad on TV which is screened during GAA championship games on any given Sunday. Sean has appeared as an extra in a couple of movies which are in production and was spotted when he made an audience participation appearance on Podge and Rodge a couple of years ago. Is Cork’s answer to Russell Crowe emerging? – watch this space! When I served in our Navy I wore my uniform with pride as did all my colleagues as I’m sure all who serve in no matter what uniform do and it ticks me off when I see public servants who seem like they don’t give a damn and let their uniform down – I have great time and respect for the Gardaí and the job they do while some of my friends serve on the force but on my way to dropping my sons to school one morning last week I came across a member of the force who had parked up his squad car at the entrance to a well known Hotel close to the school and sauntered into the middle of the road hand in pocket, the other hand waving traffic on once the tax had been checked. I dropped my boys off just around the next bend, returning a minute later where the same guy was stretching like someone who had just out of bed in the middle of the road, all renovations and building maintenance after which the hand went back in the pockDOMESTIC & COMMERCIAL et and chewing gum

like a manager in a World Cup Final, he checked my tax again. I made the mistake of walking with my hands in my pockets on the first day I joined the Navy as a recruit and never did it again as I was ordered to sew up my pockets by one of my instructors! Anyone who wears a uniform in the public eye, whether having a good day or not, should wear in a manner that befits their job – if you don’t give a crap, don’t wear the uniform and if you’re having a bad day then go sick! Hope this weather keeps up for all our sakes but moreso for the kids who are about to get their summer holidays. Good luck to all those starting both Junior and Leaving Certs! DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CENTRES NEED OUR SUPPORT MORE must be done to break the silence about domestic violence towards women in Ireland says Deirdre Clune TD. “The statistics on the number of women experiencing domestic violence in their homes are shocking and very upsetting. More must be done to break the taboo about the subject and getting people to speak out about this terrible crime.” “We live in a modern society where men and women are considered equal, where girls are brought up knowing they can achieve their dreams just as much as boys can and where gender difference is something to be embraced rather than a basis of discrimination.” “One in five Irish women experience some form of domestic abuse and it happens regardless of age. There are men who abuse older members of their family because they are no longer independent and need care as well as wives and daughters. According to Women’s Aid since 1996 there have been 162 women murdered by domestic abusers and in 2008 a survey of women in a maternity ward showed that 1 in 8 of them had experienced domestic violence during their pregnancy.” “Throughout the county of Cork we have five very good organisations that support and help women and children that have been victims of domestic violence, YANA, OSS Cork, Mna Feasa, the Cuanlee Refuge and the West Cork Women Against Violence Project. These projects deserve and are entitled to our support because without them many women would never have a way out of these terrible situations.” “Domestic Violence against women is a terrible crime but we must remember it is not only women who fall victim, it hurts men too and we all have a role to play in highlighting the crime and helping to break the silence that encourages and helps the abusers. We all, men and women alike, need to speak out.”
Ask your Solicitor By Colm O’Rourke BCL, Solicitor
“50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” So said Paul Simon, not knowing the constraints imposed by the Irish legal system on couples who get into difficulty. Separation for any couple is never easy. If you have made the difficult decision to leave your spouse and counselling or marriage guidance is not for you, then planning ahead, and obtaining legal advice at an early stage will help to ease the difficulty for all concerned. Decisions made in haste or when you are in emotional turmoil are often bad decisions, which you may live to regret. Questions that are most frequently asked are: Who gets the house? Where will the children live? Am I entitled to maintenance? Who is responsible for the bills? Do I need to go to court? What is a separation agreement? How can I get a divorce? These are all issues that you need to take legal advice on. Getting help early on is likely to save you expense at a later stage. But firstly you should check that your solicitor has the experience and expertise in family law to deal with the complex issues that can arise in these difficult cases. The problems you may experience are personal to you but they are not unique. An experienced family law solicitor will help you to understand the procedures that are there, and will help you through what can be a daunting process. A family law solicitor with the necessary experience can explain and assist with mediation, separation agreements, judicial separation, divorce and alternative dispute resolution. If you do not know where to turn, take the first step and make a confidential phone call to get the required advice and information.

Princess Phoebe Girls are a different species to boys. Most Sunday afternoons, if one or other of our sons isn’t playing a match, we go to the pictures. We started this ritual when our first son was 18 months old; we took him to Babe the Pig. His next movie was Star Wars, the 20 year anniversary one: even though he had the video and had watched it every single day for weeks, we just had to go to the big screen version because it was re-digitised. I would rather slit my wrists than sit through a Sci Fi movie but I trundled along. It being 3pm, the cinema was nearly empty. What galled me was that my son and husband fell asleep and I had to endure their snores along with watching a movie that I, against my will, knew better than the back of my own hand. Some years on, we were living in Hong Kong; we invited along my friend’s, 5 year old daughter Jaimie to Over the Hedge. My friend is from Sydney and has four daughters aged from 5 down to new born. Having no girls myself, I am enchanted when I enter her house which is awash with pink and pretty things: a princess castle that fits two children, a massive doll’s house, several pairs of princess slippers with feathers and glass jewels, pink sparkly bicycles, millions of dolls and, no noise! No broken lamps and not a football in sight. When I went to collect Jaimie, her 3 year old sister, Phoebe was having a meltdown which was an unusual spectacle in their tranquil home. I enquired as to what was the matter and was told that Phoebe wanted to go too. I said that was no problem. Phoebe swallowed her last sob and flew to her bedroom to get her handbag. My friend warned me that Phoebe scares easily. Being the mother of three desensitised boys who have sat through murder and mayhem without registering a flicker of fear, I dismissed her misgivings with a wave. Besides the movie was rated General; how bad can it be. At the cinema; loaded up with buckets of popcorn and vats of 7UP, we pushed open the doors to the sound of the movie just starting. Phoebe let out a fearful wail. We hadn’t even made it as far as the screen. Phoebe and I retreated quickly. I dithered. I considered forcing the issue and making Phoebe go in but I didn’t want to risk traumatising her. While my husband took the rest of the gang in, Phoebe and I sat in the lobby sipping our 7UP. We studied the movie posters on the walls and rated them Scary, Very Scary or Not so Scary. That lasted about 20 minutes. I looked at Phoebe and said, “Do you want to do shopping?” Her little face lit up and she lisped back, “Yes!” After the movie, we rejoined the gang and went for a coffee in Starbucks to amplify the moment. Jaimie asked for a baby chino. I didn’t know what that was but I told her that I didn’t think they had them here. She assured me that they did and I escorted her up to the counter where she ordered two. It turns out that baby chinos are cappuccinos but without the coffee and are designed for little girls out shopping with their mummies. I was enchanted anew but what really got me was that they were free which is almost unheard of in Hong Kong. The
world of girls! We returned to the table and immediately my boys demanded to have them too. I went back up again. My husband commented that our table looked like the Chimpanzee’s tea party. Phoebe, now well recovered from her earlier trauma, was in her element and happily informed the boys of all her favourite movies; Snow White, Cinderella and Ali Baba with Princess Jasmine. She told them of her aspirations to be a princess too. My 6 year old son, who hates to be outdone by anyone, informed her that he knew a princess - Princess Fiona from Shrek. Phoebe let out a squeal of derision, and rocked back into her chair clearly overcome with mirth. She looked at him scornfully and said, “She’s not a real princess: a real princess is pretty and nice all the time.” My son’s face burned with the shame and he shot back, “Stress less, Princess”.

Gov Plans For Dáil Sittings This Week Farcical The proposals being put forward by the government for Dáil business this week are farcical. They are designed to present the illusion of Dáil sittings while the Taoiseach, most Ministers and government backbenchers will not be required to be here at all.It is bad enough that the government is proposing that the House adjourned last Thursday will not return until 2.30 on Wednesday, when there is no reason why it cannot sit at 2.30pm on Tuesday. However, now we find that the government has used it majority in the Dáil to force through a motion on the Order of Business which now mean that there will be no Leaders Questions, no Orders of Business, no adjournment debates, and no votes at all this week. It is clear that the government is either unable or willing to have its own backbenchers present this week and are therefore determined to avoid any votes and most of the normal business that the Dáil undertakes. Regrettably what will add to the cynicism of the public is the sheer dishonesty of the government approach. The Government Chief Whip, John Curran, on RTE radio on May 22nd .made a big issue of announcing that the Dáil would not take a week off , as was originally provided for in the Dáil calendar, but he never gave any indication that the Dáil would be prevented from conducting any business of substance.

We would like to inform you about Jackie Cassidy and Leanne Cassidy who will be on a SERVE project this summer to India and Thailand respetively. Jackie, studying child care, along with 10 others from other parts of Ireland will be working with vulnerable children in Bangalore, India a period of 5 weeks. Leanne, along with 15 others from other parts of Ireland will volunteering on a project with women and children in the tribal regions of Nong Khai, Thailand. They will be leaving at the end of this month. David Nolan, Serve Volunteer Coordinator believes, “Our volunteers are essential in SERVE’s mission. They get first hand experience of life in a developing country. We hope they bring that back with them to Ireland which helps to further SERVE’s goal of solidarity in action. For most of our volunteers, these weeks spent overseas is only the beginning of the advocacy work that they can continue in Ireland.”

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn
It is not difficult to understand a poem if its degree of clarity fits the subject matter. But we should not expect the same amount of exactness from every poem as topics and talent do not always correspond. When they do, we usually get an exceptionally good poem. Our poem this week is from Mary Kennan Herbert who teaches literature and writing courses at Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY.
Her poems have appeared in literary journals and other
periodicals in over twenty different countries. Six collections of her poems have been published by Ginninderra Press in Australia, and one volume by Meadow Geese Press in the USA. In 2005, one of her poems was awarded first prize by Stephen Dobyns in the first poetry competition sponsored by the Greenwich Village Orchestra in New York City. CONFESSIONS OF A ST. LOUIS GIRL My mother loved to gossip with Mr. and Mrs. Thomas across the fence. They had a grape arbor. So did folks beyond the Thomas house. It was good to grow grapes in St. Louis, in those rows of Old World backyards, where I could see fruits of knowledge just beyond us, that I could survey on my way to school each day. Their neat lawns were trimmed to await the robins’ search for lunch, or my own hungry conning tower as I looked for plunder. I stole grapes and flowers and hours.

I wanted time, I pressed moments into my diary, eavesdropped on the Thomases. Never doubting, they chatted with my mother about the innocence of children. Mary Kennan Herbert

Blarney means Business
• The Boys are back in town. Pat Heavin
Senator, Jerry Buttimer
Seanad ‘week off’ a total disgrace The decision taken this morning (Thursday) on the Order of Business in the Seanad to suspend the House for the duration of next week has been slammed as a disgrace by Fine Gael Cork South Central Senator Jerry Buttimer. “It is absolutely farcical that a few weeks prior to the summer break the Seanad will not be sitting at all next week. “Unemployment has spiked again with 439,100 people now on the dole, the country is on its knees as a result of Fianna Fáil and the Greens pouring every cent we have, and more, into the banks and now a decision has been taken to plough ahead with a week off for Senators next week. “It is a disgrace that during the month of June, just a few short weeks before the House breaks for what is already considered an extensive recess, Senators will be furnished with another week off. “It is imperative that Senators and Deputies sit more days, not less, during this time of critical importance when more people are languishing on our doles queues than ever before. Instead the Seanad outrageously ruled this morning that Senators should have next week off, as planned, in place of assembling the House and attempting to deal with the crises currently strangling the country.”
Blarney Chamber of Commerce will host their inaugural Employment and Business Development event in conjunction with First Employment Services (FES) at Blarney Woollen Mills Hotel on Tuesday June 15th from 9.30am - 1pm. This event is free of charge and everyone is welcome. Blarney, like many communities, has witnessed unemployment and business losses over the past eighteen months but a renewed community spirit is determined to bring Blarney and surrounding areas back to full business health. This well structured and informative event will include presentations from Blarney Chamber of Commerce, FAS Services to Business and Employment Services, South Cork Enterprise Board, First Employment Services, Department of Social Welfare and Avondhu Blackwater Development Group. There will be an exhibition with over 15 stands including Cork Citizens Information Services and the Employment Resource Centre, Local Employment Services, National Learning Network, County Cork VEC, UCC, CIT, amongst other business and personal development organisations. The event will offer advice and help to existing businesses looking for support, job retention and growth opportunities, entrepreneurs looking for help on how to turn their ideas into jobs, and those unemployed, either recently or long term, looking for advice on their entitlements or how to get back into the workplace. Getting Ireland back on its feet is everybodys business, so whether you are a nurse, an engineer, a teacher or from any other sphere of the workplace your ideas and enthusiasm are valuable. Blarney Chamber of Commerce intends to help you make them a reality. Blarney means Business....and if you do too then come along to Blarney Woollen Mills Hotel on Tuesday June 15th from 9.30am - 1pm and see what Blarney Chamber of Commerce and First Employment Services can offer you.

Insect Bites and Your Reaction to Them. The culicoides species - the type of midge most prevalent in Ireland - is a predator that makes the mosquito look positively benign. It is the female of the species who is the perpetrator, landing on your skin, penetrating you with her proboscis and sucking your blood into her abdomen because she needs the protein from the blood for their eggs to develop. After she flies away sated, she'll leave some saliva behind in the wound, which is what causes your body's dramatic - immune response. Within minutes, the area swells into an angry red lump called a weal. In some cases, this is exacerbated by an allergic response by the victim – you! If you get bitten, wash the area with soap and water to prevent infection and then apply calamine
lotion, Anthisan cream or a cortisone cream. Midges are attracted to people by various factors including warmth, movement, smell and carbon dioxide from our breath. Insect repellents work by making it difficult for them to find us. They inhibit receptors in the mosquitoes antennae which would normally be stimulated by these attractants. Some people smell much more appetising to mosquitoes than others and it is worth remembering that perfumes found in soaps, skin and hair-care products may also attract mosquitoes. Despite popular belief, everyone gets bitten, It is just that some people do not show a "reaction" to the bite. This reaction (itching, swelling and redness) is caused by
an allergic response to the insect’s saliva, which is injected into the skin. Those individuals who think they never get bitten, are simply not allergic to the saliva, and therefore have no visible reaction. As always, prevention is better than cure, and insect repellents and sprays are the first step in self-protection. The key chemical contained in most overthe counter brands is a plastic polymer commonly referred to as Deet. The Jungle Formula range is recommended by the Hospital for Tropical Disease. Effective nonchemical remedies include the essential oils from plants such as lemongrass, eucalyptus, cypress, lavender, rosemary and thyme.
Oil with 1ml essential oil and shake well before applying it. Midges will land on your skin regardless, but the baby oil provides a sticky layer through which it's difficult for them to penetrate. Citronella oil, mixed into an aqueous cream base, can also be effective, but citronella candles have been shown to be fairly useless. Eating garlic is another way to repel midges but you may end up repelling other more welcome advances as a result. Cigarette smoke also helps to ward off midges but it can lead to complications slightly more serious than a few itchy red lumps. Alcohol Action Ireland, the national charity for alcohol related issues, today praised a government report on young carers but warned that children looking after alcohol-dependent parents were at even more risk because of the hidden nature of the problem. The charity’s director Fiona Ryan said: “This report shows that young carers are a vulnerable group of children and the more hidden the child, the more vulnerable the child. The shame, stigma and denial that go with alcohol problems in families, mean young carers in these situations are at even greater risk of being isolated and suffering physical and emotional neglect. In the more extreme cases, there are clear child protection concerns: Children in families with problem alcohol and/or drug use are at increased risk of exposure to violence.” UK research* has put the figure of young carers looking after someone with a substance misuse problem at around one in four and this is liable to be an underestimation. We know that young carers, children as young as 12, are having to take on adult responsibilities – this can mean everything from making sure there is food in the house, clean clothes for brothers and sisters, to making sure parents are safe. Not all children caring for parents with alcohol problems come from stereotypically deprived backgrounds but children whose lives are already difficult because of poverty face an even greater range of risks, for example, homelessness. Ms Ryan said the State owed a debt to all young carers, not just morally but in a very concrete financial way because of the social services these children provide: “While all young carers need age-appropriate, resourced, accessible supports. Young carers, who are in their situation because of parental alcohol or drugs problems, also need to know it is safe to come out from hiding and that if they do, they will be supported. Children may need to be encouraged to make that journey. Training professionals in contact with children to identify when a child is in this situation is a key first step but the services have to be in place to help the child take the next step.” Thur 10 Jun '10 - 17
Home & Garden of blight. Stop pulling rhubarb this week, feed if not down, and leave to grow unchecked.
Lawns & Hedges Rake up freshly mown areas of naturalised bulbs after seeds have had time to fall out, and dress the area with general fertiliser Sometimes it can go against the grain to even mention getting ready for winter or next spring before our summer has really started, unfortunately it must be done, but we'll try to keep it to the occasional hint. As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.
Flower Garden Start taking soft cuttings of shrubs for rooting under glass. Take cuttings (pipings) of pinks and border carnations, and root in a frame. Prune remaining Buddleia davidli stems this month for late flowers. For top quality rose
blooms, remove side buds to leave a single main bud. Prune any large branches from walnuts, magnolias and prunus species, and paint the wounds with pruning compound.
Kitchen Garden Start gathering herbs in quantity for drying or freezing. A batch of small fast carrots sown now will miss attacks by carrot root flies. Water young and leafy crops, and then mulch if prolonged dry weather is forecast. Thin and peg down strawberry runners needed for propagation. Sow perpetual spinach for winter and spring use. Sow dwarf French beans for late crops under cloches. Pinch out the sideshoots of figs to 3-4 leaves. Spray potatoes with a copper fungicide if there are signs
Green House Take cuttings of geraniums, fuchsias, marguerites and other plants to train as standards. Introduce predators if greenhouse whitefly and red spider mites become troublesome. Start thinning grapes as trusses develop. Apply full shading to the glass, if not already done. Check growing bags daily for
watering; install an automatic trickle system to save work. Stop large-flowered chrysanthemums now, and again in 6-8 weeks' time. Stand greenhouse pots on capillary matting if watering becomes onerous in hot weather.
Water Garden Remove algae before it can build up, top up ponds in hot weather, and aerate the surface if fish are gasping for air.
In General Finish all seasonal planting before the weather turns hot and dry, mulch and water until established. Don't forget to sow your winter flowering pansies.

DESIGN TEAM TO BE APPOINTED FOR EXTENSION TO CARRIGALINE COMMUNITY SCHOOL The Department of Education is to appoint a design team to oversee the development of an extension to Carrigaline Community School, according to local T.D. Michael McGrath, who has welcomed the news. “Carrigaline Community School (CCS) was included as one of eleven primary and post primary projects for which expressions of interest were requested last March by the Department of Education from suitably qualified contractors,” according to Deputy McGrath. Deputy McGrath said that the Department of Education published the prequalification of contractors notice for the building project at CCS with a deadline of 16th April last for submissions by contractors. “Carrigaline Community School continues to experience growth in student numbers as the town of Carrigaline expands. I understand the school is likely to reach the milestone of 1,000 pupils later this year. “The progression of this extension project is great news for everyone associated with Carrigaline Community School. I look forward to working with the school to ensure this project progress through the remaining stages of the planning and building programme, so that the staff and pupils can enjoy the benefits of this extension as quickly as possible,” concluded Deputy McGrath.

Clipper Round the World Yacht Race Comes to Cork Preparations are in full swing for the arrival of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race for its first stopover in Europe since it departed the UK last September. The project is sponsored by Cork City Council, Cork County Council and Fáilte Ireland with the principle objective of building Cork brand awareness internationally. Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is the only global event raced by people from all walks of life; no previous sailing experience necessary. It consists of a 10-month-long, 35,000 mile course that has taken the race from England to France before crossing to Brazil, South Africa, Australia, Singapore, China, California, Panama, Jamaica, New York, Cape Breton Island, before arriving into Kinsale and Cork and then to the Netherlands. The Race will make its triumphant return to the Humber on July 17 2010. On Wednesday 07 July the fleet will make its way in a parade of sail from Kinsale to Cork city. To celebrate the Cork Clipper’s homecoming in style, Albert Quay beside the Custom House will be transformed into a Race Village for three days from 10am to 10pm daily with food, drinks and crafts stalls and a large stage for musical acts such as Cork favourites John Spillane and Fred. Each day there will be street entertainment and a vintage carousel and amusements for all the family. The Clipper fleet will be moored at the new Cork City pontoons at the Custom House which have been installed by the Port of Cork with assistance from the City Council. The Cork Clipper Festival will be a fun event for all the family celebrating our participation in this wonderful Round the World Race. The festival adds to the packed summer programme in Cork including the Midsummer Festival, Live at the Marquee with its world class acts, the Ocean to City rowing race and The Cork Marathon. Cork is the place to be this summer and I encourage everyone to visit over the summer months to enjoy our wonderful city centre with its vibrant streets and excellent shopping The festival website www.corkclipperfestival.com has details of all free events over the 8 day period. 07-09 July 2010 - Cork City

Preventive health is a simple idea whose time has come. Many people now take the conscious decision upon themselves to have a screening which help people and make them aware of a previously undetected health problem and guide them to follow up care with their own G.P. this is the idea of preventive health. On our weekly outings to different places of interest it is very rewarding to see the positive social interaction our older people engage in. This regular social interaction can in turn reduce solitude and isolation, and feelings of loneliness and depression. Social activities provide countless opportunities for companionship with others as well as stimulation and enjoyment. If you know of a neighbour or friend who would enjoy a day out give me a ring on 4363867. Next week we are off to the naval base, we enjoy a boat trip in Cork harbour and then back to the mess for a top class lunch. This trip is always booked up quickly, so make sure I have your names beforehand as I do not want to disappoint anybody. Ag an am bhí luach 19% ar an úis ar mhorgáistí – inniu, dar liom, i gcomparáid ní faic é an 5% atá mar luach an úis. Bhí thart ar an líon céanna daoine dífhostaithe – sé sin, cláraithe leis an Stáit – agus mise ina measc – is atá inniu ann! Ag an am, freisin, ní raibh deis ann dul thar lear go Sasana mar bhí cúrsaí chomh dona, agus bhí bac á chur ag na húdaráis i Meiriceá mar go raibh a fadhbanna fostaíochta agus dífhostaíochta acu féin Agus mé dífhostaithe, - sé sin ar fáil chun glacadh le post lán-aimsire i rith an lae oibre oifigiúil (idir 09.00 am agus 17.00 ut), d’éirigh liom roinnt oibre tuairisceora mar léirmheastóir drámaíochta a aimsiú ó Scéala Éireann (nach bhfuil ann a thuilleadh), agus istoíche amháin a cuireadh amach mé chuig amharclanna chun an léirmheastóireacht seo a dhéanamh ar fud cathair Bhaile Átha Cliath. Ach thuairisc duine éigin – comharsan dom ag an am – go raibh mé ‘ag obair’ “go lán-aimseartha an fhad is a bhí mé ag glacadh leis an íocaíocht dífhostaíochta Stáit” – rud nach raibh fíor, ach bhí orm seo a cruthú mar gur déanadh dian-fhiosrú ar mo chás, agus ba léir nach raibh sé fíor. Glanadh m’ainm mar go raibh mé in ann a cruthú go raibh mé ar fáil do phost le linn an lae – bhíos ag freastal ar chúrsa traenála bainistíochta le FÁS ag an am – agus níorbh fhadhb dom é cúpla uair a chaitheamh istoíche mar léirmheastóir ag obair go páirt-aimseartha roinnt uaire sa tseachtain ar fhoireann Scéala Éireann. Tháinig an eachtra seo chun chuimhne dom an tseachtain seo thart nuair a d’inis cuntasóir ó iarthar Chorcaí a dúirt go bhfuil aithne aige ar roinnt comhlachtaí nach féidir leo daoine ón scuaine dífhostaíochta a fhostú. Is i mBaile amháin sa cheantair in iarthar Chorcaí, áit ina bhfuil os cionn 1,000 duine cláraithe mar dhaoine dífhostaíochta atá an fhadhb seo, dar leis, agus dúirt sé nach ar an mbunús nach bhfuil dóthain post ann, ach nach bhfuil fonn ar roinnt den dhaoine seo ‘dul ag obair’. Ní fheadar an fíor an méad a deir sé, ach is léir go bhfuil neart oibre ar fáil i ranna éagsúla den eacnamaíocht cé go bhfuil an tóin titithe as ranna eile. Is dócha gurb é an rud a chabhraigh liomsa éirí amach ón dífhostaíocht agus an ciorcal ina bhfuair mé mé féin suite dá bharr ná athrú meoin – ó chultúir inar cheap mé gurb é mo chearta cabhair ó Stáit a lorg roimh dom dun chun cabhrú liom féin! Nuair a d’athraigh mé mo mheon diúltach seo – agus nuair a dhírigh mé ar chabhrú liom féin i dtosach – is ansin a d’aimsigh mé, agus a thuig mé, mo chearta cabhrach a lorg ón Stáit, agus fuaireas an-chuid de ó dhaoine agus trí freastal ar chúrsaí oideachais fostaíochta is oibre. Agus ní raibh fadhb agam ó shin!!! Thur 10 Jun '10 - 23

DOUGLAS GAA Street Leagues Finals: "Give me a child until he is seven and I will give you the man" is an ancient Jesuit maxim which resonates with the many children, parents, mentors and committee members who have been fortunate to be associated with the Douglas G.A.A. Street Leagues since it’s restructuring under Eamonn Carroll’s guidance in 1978. Since then it has become an integral component in the development of children in the greater Douglas area. It owes its success to the many volunteers who have generously given their time to provide opportunities for children to learn the skills of Gaelic Football and Hurling while also facilitating the holistic development of children in their care. This years Street Leagues Finals, sponsored by Douglas Credit Union, are scheduled for Saturday 12th June. While the finals day is the culmination of another successful season, it is also a celebration because as the children march around the village it consolidates their respective identities as important members of the Douglas community. The youngsters are meeting at St. Columba’s Boys National School at 1.00pm followed by the parade at 1.30pm with matches beginning at 2.00pm. Medals will be presented by Douglas players that have represented Cork in 2010 including Eoin Cadogan and Eoin Cotter. Scoil Phádraig Naofa Sports Day: Scoil Phádraig Naofa is the new primary school located in Rochestown and on Thursday 3rd June it held its sports day. Chairman of the underage section Barry O’Donoghue and street leagues chairman Philip O’Doherty represented Douglas Hurling & Football Club while Douglas and Cork dual star Eoin Cadogan was the most popular person present as he patiently signed autographs and stood in for photographs with the star struck youngsters. Quite clearly the day was a success and great credit is due to Principal teacher, Fiodhna Ní Bhaoill and her colleagues in their endeavour to promote a sporting ethos in the school. Junior Hurling Championship: On Sunday 13th June Douglas will play Blackrock in the Junior “A” hurling championship. Throw in at Ballinlough is scheduled for 12.15pm. Meanwhile, on Wednesday 16th June Douglas will play Nemo Rangers in the Junior “B” hurling championship. Throw in at Trabeg is scheduled for 7.15pm. For more news visit www.douglasgaa. com

Douglas GAA UnderAge Last Sunday our U-13 footballers travelled to Killarney and defeated Dr Croakes in a very competitive game of football, afterwards they travelled to the famous Fitzerald stadium to watch Cork draw with the mighty Kingdom. Everybody had a great day and well done to the mentors for arranging a super day. Next Saturday is a very busy day in the Under-Age calender. First up is the Street League finals with all our players under 10 taking part and will be under the watchful eye of Philip Doherty
and his dedicated committee. Our U-11 Footballers are also in action in the finals of the John Keirns Tournament at Parc U Rinn. Over the weekend our U-12 Football team play Ballincollig in the very last premier County Final at this age group, we wish Aidan, Patrick and Eddie he very best of luck with this dedicated bunch of lads. So roll on the barbeque in the club next Sat evening hopefully with some silverware !!

Douglas Pitch & Putt Email : douglasppui@gmail.com 021 4363042 The Douglas Nett Cup was the feature event of the past week and again proved to be quite a success for the third year in a row. With the weather in our favour, and many clubs represented, there were over 500 cards played for the duration of the competition. The finalists included both senior men & junior ladies amongst the 20 in the playoff on Sunday evening, with many Douglas players involved. The eventual winner was Gavin Roche with a score of 40 nett which included a hole in one at the 15th. 2nd Rory O Neill 41 nett, 3rd Stephen Noonan 43, 4th Alf Hanrahan 45, 5th Mark Crean 46,6th Anthony Flynn (Parteen) 46,7th Eddie Hanna (Majestic) 47, 8th Denis Dennehy 47. We would like to thank everyone who played & also those who assisted with the running of the competition for the week. On Monday evening the final of the handicap matchplay took place between Martin Freaney & Denis O Sullivan, and proved to be a great game, with Martin 3up after 18, some great putting by Denis saw it level after 27holes, Martin edged ahead to go 3up at the 33rd before eventually winning by 3/2. Our Juvenile/U 16s were in action in the Cork strokeplay at Collins over the weekend, although not in the silverware, well done to Sean & Cillian Desmond who represented the club well on the day.
G.A.A. FOCUS Snippets from the Local and National Scene By Pat Harrington Cork vs. Tipperary “Tell the truth, who expected this?” So ran the headline in the Tony Considine column in the Irish Examiner. The headline referred of course to the emphatic Cork victory over old rivals Tipperary in the hurling championship. I can recall being asked for my opinion prior to the game; I had little hesitation before I replied “Tipp to win”. My thinking was based on Cork’s performance against Galway in the national league final. My second point was that I had reservations about the ability of the Cork forwards to penetrate the Tipp defence and to score goals. I clearly got it wrong. The performance was a complete reversal of that which we experienced against the Tribesmen. The team performed as a solid unit from 1 to 15. Cork out-thought, out-fought and out-hustled their opponents. Dónal Óg’s puck outs were excellently executed. Eoin Cadogan was a commanding figure in the full back position, the half back line were in control most of the time and the workrate of the half forwards was very good. Cathal Naughton provided an excellent link between defense and attack while Patrick Horgan took his scores well. I have never been a fan of Aisake but on the day he made the perfect target man for all Cork attacks and caused havoc in the square. Still, no all-Ireland

won yet; not even a Munster title. What of the Premier County On the basis of their opening Munster display they need huge improvement. It may be for them a blessing in disguise to go through the back door and get those extra games under their belts. The Hurler in the Stands I have been following hurling for a long number of years but I have never heard so much criticism of Cork players as I did in both the intermediate and senior games. The two critics were middle-aged men; Muppets would be a more appropriate term to describe them. They did not appear to have drink taken but every time a player made a mistake (as they saw it) or did not strike the long enough for their liking these two boyos had their say out loud, to the entertainment of those around them, I might add. I am changing the popular term “Hurler on the Ditch” to Hurler in the Stands. There was a group of Tipperary lads in front of us who were absolutely shell shocked at the result. One of them was undoubtedly fitted with Duracell; such was his constant yapping throughout the game. To give credit where it’s due they turned around and shook hands with us at full time and wished us well in the Munster championship. New Rules In the course of a minor non-exam game last week a 20 metre free was awarded against Douglas which the goalkeeper saved. The referee ruled that the goalkeeper moved off his line before the ball was played and ordered
that the free be retaken – a correct decision. Babs Keating It was sad to hear former Tipperary player and manager Babs Keating criticize some of the Tipperary players. His comment that Denis Walsh has the advantage of being himself an all-Ireland winner. To remark that he has that advantage over Liam Sheedy was neither needed nor constructive. To be fair to Sheedy, under his stewardship thus far Tipp have won two Munster championships and a league title. Yes, Babs won two all-Irelands as a manager, 1989 / ’91. Under his leadership from 2005 to 2007 the Premier County won nothing; in fact during this period there was a lot of disharmony in the Tipp camp. In 1998 when Babs was training Offaly there was what amounted to a player revolt. The Faithful County got a new manager (John Bond) and won the all-Ireland. Babs was very critical of the Cork players during their dispute with the County Board and passed comments regarding the way the players treated Gerald McCarthy. Whilst I may not agree with all the actions of the players I admire them for the stance taken. There is a serious sea-change in Cork G.A.A. circles and yes, the players have played a very positive role in this. Betting Tipperary are 7 / 2 and 3 / 1 for the all-Ireland title. Cork are quoted at 9 / 2 and 4 / 1. More next week, Pat.
