Young at Heart The weather looked dodgy last Wednesday as the Douglas Young at Heart Group headed to the Naval Base at Haulbowline for their annual visit. I met them there and as usual they were well looked after in true Navy fashion. After a sumptuous meal at the beautiful dining complex, the weather came right and the group went on to enjoy a trip on a launch in Cork harbour before having a few sociable beverages in the N.C.O.’s mess. Once again, as has been since the group’s initial visit, L/S Pat Dermody was the guide for the day and I must pay tribute to Pat for his usual warm welcome together with the care and attention he pays the group. Noted absentee this year was W.O. John Walsh who retired from the Navy last year but I gather he is in regular contact with the Young at Heart group. Well done to all at the Naval Base who make this visit happen every year.

On The Bandwagon! Dear Editor, I wonder are we ever going to recover in this country. I don't think so as long as we have spongers. It grieves me to think so many TDs, Councillors, Lord Mayors draw their month's pensions without any shame. Is payment were made on performances, I'm sure they would all starve! How many TDs never speak at all at meetings week in and out - they are
only there for the money. It cost 2 million last year for the Cork City's Councillor's wages and expenses. What is it costing the country? I say shame on ye, come off the Bandwagon and please don't drain this country of ours, think of our children's future. Thanking you, Joe Brown Blackrock.
Re; Last Week’s Editorial Dear Editor. I have read with interest and concern your comments on the dress code and deportment of a member of An Garda Siochana recently. Unfortunately this is a sight too often seen from younger members of the Force. We are told that recent recruits are now better trained and better educated than previously. It certainly does not appear their training includes pride in their appearance and dress code. In the old days one would rarely see a member of An Garda Siochana with hands in pockets and never chewing on gum. We have more Senior Officers than ever before, including an Assistant Commissioner in Cork. Pity there does not seem to be appropriate supervision of these younger members. Best Wishes. Michael A, Moriarty. Cork
Anyone for Tennis? Dear Editor, All roads lead to Wimbledon S.W.19. Strawberries and cream time. Hopefully heralding the arrival of summertime. Lawn tennis is a funny old game. Scoring for some reason goes 15 -
30- 40 - Game! Why not 1-2-3Game? Guy on the ladder netside must feel hot and thirsty as he keeps on shouting for 'Juice'!! I also wonder is he a bit queer? Okay calling the women 'Love' but likewise he applies it to the guys!! Not to mention those brazen hussies display to T.V. cameras what they had for breakfast, in their micro miniskirts. Mind you - I'm not complaining!! Unfair also how mens final winner receives gold trophy, while the gals have to make do with a silver dish!! Neil O'Donoghue Greenhills

STATEMENT ON PETER BARRY’S FREEDOM OF THE CITY SPEAKING prior to the conferring of the Freedom of the City of Cork on her father Peter Barry by Cork City Council, Deirdre Clune TD for Cork South Central said it was a wonderful day for all her family. “TODAY is a wonderful day for my father, Peter. He’s delighted with the honour that City Council are bestowing on him. As a family we are very proud. We think it is an important day and we’re delighted that the city is recognising his contribution both as a politician and as a businessman. “He’s been in politics most of his adult life. Since I was a young child he was always very involved and giving of his time. It’s something he has always been delighted to be involved and felt he he made a contribution. “Today is a day that his own city, a city he is so proud of, is honouring him and that makes for a wonderful day.” Peter Barry was a Fine Gael TD from 1969-1997 and Lord Mayor of Cork City in 1970, a decade after his father, Anthony Barry. Deirdre Clune was Lord Mayor in 2005.

Geriatric And Able Part 1 I took up Gaelic Football two years ago after we moved to Hong Kong. I had no exposure to GAA sports while growing up: my parents followed golf and rugby, my brothers were West Ham supporters and I was the couch potato. My husband, being from Kerry, is of course, a rabid follower of Gaelic football. He played it socially when we lived in Singapore – his team was called ‘The Father Teds’ - and took it up again when we moved to Hong Kong. When the 2003 Asian Gaelic Games were held in Hong Kong, it was on a sunny weekend in early October which ensured a good attendance and a great atmosphere. The family enjoyed the weekend immensely but my husband maintained that, “Nothing beats being a participant.” That thought stayed in my head when the following Christmas, I met the ladies team at the GAA Christmas party and they persuaded me to come down to training. I only made the decision to go once I was absolutely sure that they really were desperate for players, and I also thought it would do no harm to the marriage to have a common pursuit with my husband. I changed my mind several times but I reluctantly honoured my promise and turned up for training on the first Sunday in the New Year. I wanted to run
away. I felt such a fraud: who was I kidding? Most women in their forties play civilised sports like play golf and tennis. They don’t go hurtling around muddy pitches, flinging themselves after balls and bawling out the ref. But I swallowed my misgivings and plodded on. The grandly named 2004 All China Championships in Shanghai was coming up. Hubbie signed up for it immediately and he put my name down too. In the weeks leading up to the tournament, we received daily reminders by email to get our Chinese visa. I dutifully submitted my passport to the travel agency and when I offered to do the same for Hubbie, he waved me away with “Sure, I’m up and down to China all the time. Of course, I have a visa.” However, when the group met on the Friday evening at Hong Kong airport, it was only when he was at the check-in counter that he realised that his visa had expired a week ago. I looked at him in disbelief and said “I’m only going because of you!” Michele from Balbriggan put her arm around me and said “Don’t worry, we’ll look after you but you are going to get an awful slagging over losing your husband.” Our first game was against Shanghai. Katrina, our captain said “First things first, who wants to be in goal?” I said nothing. Silently I wished that it was me but told

myself that I mustn’t be selfish. When she asked again and still got no response, I nonchalantly shrugged my shoulders and said, “I’ll give it a go.” The relief on her face told me that clearly nobody ever wants to go in goal. My ‘technique’ was to close my eyes, hold up my hands and rush out at the oncoming opponent. It
wasn’t pretty but it worked. After the first ‘save’, Katrina looked at me surprised and said, “Well done!” It was then that I had my Oprah ‘Yes!’ moment’ and from then on I was completely hooked on Gaelic football. continued next week

CLEAR NEED FOR RENT-TO-BUY SCHEME With well over 1,100 vacant ‘affordable home’ properties languishing on local authority books, many of which are held by both Cork City and Cork County Council, it is clear that we need a national rent-to-buy scheme so that people who need a home can get one. There is a pilot rent-to-buy scheme in place in Dublin, but it is now time that it was rolled out on a national basis. Such a scheme would need to done in an innovative and structured way, backed up by hard data on property values and house prices. In that regard, I have called for a database of house prices on a number of occasions particularly in the light of the fact that it was promised by Fianna Fail and the Greens in the revised Programme for Government. At present there are three factors that are still acting as a deterrent to would-be house buyers. First there is massive uncertainty and lack of job security in many sectors of the economy. Then there is the wellfounded belief that property prices are still on the way down. Finally, statistics would indicate that it is cheaper to rent than to buy, particularly when the depreciation of property value is taken into account. Since the Government conceded earlier this year, that there were in excess 3,000 unsold affordable homes, I have as Labour Party Spokesperson on Housing Spokesperson been calling for the introduction of a rent to buy scheme. The Minister has come around to this view, but only to the extent of introducing a pilot scheme. More action is needed and the scheme should be rolled out on a national basis. A key aspect of our proposals for this plan is the creation of a houseprice database that will ensure that the sale price of the property, at the end of the rental period will deliver genuine value for money for owner-occupiers participating in the rent-to-buy scheme.

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn
In the movie “Cast Away”, the character Chuck Noland played by Tom Hanks said “I know what I have to do now. I gotta keep breathing. Because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide could bring?” The recent eruption of an Icelandic Volcano created widespread chaos for airlines and their passengers across the skies of Europe. The effects of the disruption echoed around the world. Who would have thought this great natural upheaval could have inspired a poem. Yet, throughout history such events have been the catalyst that inspired creative people in many art forms. Pete Duffy of the Douglas Writers Group has put his talent to good use and given us this week’s poem. The Icelandic Volcano She spews her ire from the belly of the earth, mystic fire in a snowy white skirt And her toxic mist deems flight inert, as she makes her ancient roar. The tempest rage slept down below, as age old sea washed wind swept shore, When molten rock hits heavens door, she makes her ancient roar. A fertile earth has left us see, her million years of pregnancy As dormant gas in freedom cries, she makes her ancient roar. The legacy of prophecy commits this time to history, while nature Shows it’s awesome strength, she makes her ancient roar. This frozen land full fills it’s quest, as sky bound ash comes home To rest and life abounds with mystery, when she makes her Ancient roar Pete Duffy

COMMUNITY NEWS The 15th West Cork Chamber Music Festival broadcast live on RTÉ lyric fm For those who can't make it to the 15th West Cork Chamber Music Festival, taking place in Bantry from Friday 25 June - Saturday 3 July, the good news is that RTÉ lyric fm will be broadcasting four concerts live from the festival and recording the remainder of the festival for later broadcast. Acknowledging the generous support that the Festival receives from RTÉ lyric fm each year, Festival Director Francis Humphrys says ,"It is critical for the Festival's national and international profile that concerts are recorded and broadcasted throughout Ireland, the UK and Europe. This is what sets the Festival apart." Listeners of RTÉ lyric fm will be able to tune in to the Lyric Concert with Eamonn Lawlor on Friday 25 June at 8pm to hear the Festival opening concert. Carl Nielsen's String Quartet in G minor explodes into life with the Danish Quartet before outstanding young Scottish violinist Nicola Benedetti joins cellist Leonard Elschenbroich and pianist Alexei Grynyuk for Schumann's Piano Trio No. 3 in G minor. The Escher Quartet

Crystal Clear Yvonne is a fascinating woman; she is a clairvoyant and has spent the last 30yrs travelling all over the globe giving people the benefit of her second sight. She is unique even in the exclusive realm of clairvoyance, the seventh daughter of a seventh daughter and anyone who has been to see her is a fan for life. We’re a fairly sceptical nation when it comes to unquantified areas like physic ability but Yvonne has been coming to Ireland for the past 10yrs and has a tremendously loyal client base here. She has astounded many with the accuracy of her predictions and word of mouth travels fast. She likes to allow at least a year to pass between visits, so clients have the opportunity to realise the prophecy of her readings, and each time she comes there are more people waiting to have a one to one consultation with her. ‘I have always had a broad selection of people from all walks of life coming to see me’ says Yvonne a Nottinghamborn mother of six ‘but I have noticed that with the credit crunch has come great uncertainty and insecurity there’s a lot of uncertainty out there.’ Yvonne works by sight and touch, reading the vibes from people in
private one on one reading so she can concentrate completely on each individual’s energy without any distractions. She uses tarot cards, reads palms and does have a crystal ball but when this practical lady explains how it is used it all seems to make sense. ‘People seek advice about all kinds of things’ says Yvonne ‘if someone is thinking of buying a house, I can tell them if it’s a good time for them or if they should hold back different options suit different people. Yvonne will be accompanied on this occasion by Madame Julieanna, England’s leading clairvoyant, and it’s her first visit to Ireland. If you would like to meet Yvonne bookings are recommended as she is kept busy. Yvonne and Madame Julieanna will be in attendance at both the Carrigaline Court Hotel and at Silversprings Moran Hotel. Cork City Marshalled Taxi Rank Vote no. 1
The Marshalled Taxi Rank, a Cork City Cares initiative, now operates on Friday and Saturday nights between Midnight and 3.00 a.m. on St. Patrick Street (beside Brown Thomas); this new city centre Marshalled Taxi Rank provides a monitored and serviced taxi rank for the security and comfort of Cork city centre night‐time patrons. The Rank is marshalled by security staff and monitored by An Garda Síochána via the city centre CCTV and Garda personnel. Patrons are invited to queue in an orderly manner and marshals on the rank are in contact with city taxi companies to call more taxis when needed to the rank. The Cork City Cares Marshalled Taxi Rank was established in 2007 to create a city centre focal point for late night transport availability and to lend a level of reassurance to passengers and taxi drivers, with trained marshals manning the rank, CCTV coverage and Garda monitoring. A major survey on the night time environment of Cork city centre, commissioned by Cork City Cares from McCann Erickson in 2006 highlighted public perceptions that after 11pm taxis no longer serviced the city centre as taxis preferred to pick up passengers in the inner suburbs. The Cork City Cares Marshalled Taxi Rank quickly established a high level of support from the Cork Taxi Industry and the keen patronage of the Cork public. Now, three years down the line, the night time environment of Cork city centre has changed and the level of taxi service by the Cork Taxi Industry is much stronger. Going forward Cork City Cares will now operate the rank over strategic and busy weekends where there is a significant increase in demand e.g. Festivals and Celebrations. This will facilitate the development of new and additional initiatives by Cork City Cares as we continue in striving to deliver a vibrant night time environment on the island of Cork city centre.

Rosacea Rosacea is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that affects adults. It causes redness in your face and produces small, red, pus-filled bumps or pustules. Left untreated, rosacea tends to be progressive, which means it gets worse over time. However, in most people rosacea is cyclic. This means your rosacea signs and symptoms may flare up for a period of weeks to months and then lessen for a while before flaring up again. Besides acne, rosacea can be mistaken for other skin problems, such as skin allergy or eczema. Though rosacea doesn't have a cure, treatments can control and reduce the signs and symptoms. If you experience persistent redness of your face, see your doctor for a diagnosis and proper treatment.
Symptoms Signs and symptoms of rosacea include: Red areas on your face Small, red bumps or pustules on your nose, cheeks, forehead
The cause of rosacea is unknown, but researchers believe it's likely due to some combination of hereditary and environmental factors. Some of these factors include:

Call for Oireachtas members to disclose their principal residence

Fine Gael Cork South Central Senator Jerry Buttimer has called on all Oireachtas members who have ownership of more than one house, to declare which one is their principal residence. “Recent events of members of the Oireachtas abusing the expense system have only served to further damage the reputation of politics. This is in the time when we have record unemployment and people are struggling to make ends meet. I have called in recent times, on numerous occasions for the need for cultural change in how we run Ireland; this type of behaviour is only further evidence that we need this change. “The practice of members claiming travel expenses from their holiday homes is not acceptable on any level. It is an abuse of the system that is in place currently. I am calling on all members of the Oireachtas who have second or multiple homes to declare which is their principal residence. This would clear up any confusion that may exist in some member’s minds of where they live. “Politics today has the chance to offer people leadership in these tough times. People are screaming out for leadership but are only willing to accept it, if it comes from a credible source. Unfortunately this government is not a credible source, and when we see members of Fianna Fail engaged in abusing the expense system we know that they simply don’t get what is happening in the real World. “I believe that for too long politics has been closed and barriers have been put up in place to protect politicians in power. We now need a system that offers transparency and openness, one people can trust and that they have faith in. The public have had enough of this immoral and unethical behaviour and we need to change now.”

Home & Garden cut the wiry stalks of plantains and other large weeds.
Greenhouse
As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.
Flower Garden Deadhead basket and container plants, and start feeding regularly. Feed Michaelmas daisies and thin the stems if necessary. Cut sweet peas frequently, and do not let any blooms run to seed. Transplant biennials sown under glass, 8cm (3in) apart in a nursery bed. Inspect hellebores for aphids, which can affect next year's growth if left.
i Irish a Aggregates Paving Centre
Kitchen Garden Thin apples and pears when surplus fruits have finished falling naturally. Stop cutting asparagus and feed plants with general fertiliser. Estimate when first early potatoes will be ready, and soak about 2 weeks beforehand to boost crops. Plan winter crops while there is still time to sow them. In hot weather sow lettuce direct in the afternoon, and cover with damp newspaper for 24 / 48 hours to keep seeds cool. Thin peaches and nectarines to about 15cm (6in) apart.
Lawns & Hedges Trim lonicera and privet hedges regularly. Use a rotary mower to
Sow busy lizzies for houseplants in the winter; cut back in March and take cuttings for bedding. Start harvesting cucumbers while still small, to encourage further cropping. Sow cacti and succulent seeds in gritty compost. Start leaving vents open at night regularly, or install automatic vent openers to cope with fluctuations. Most cacti can be stood outdoors now, in a bright
sheltered position.
Water Garden Check ponds regularly in hot weather in case they need topping up. Net green algae if it builds up, and add to the compost heap. Mulch the bog garden with straw or leafmould to conserve moisture, or spread pebbles and coarse grit as a mulch.
In General Pick produce and deadhead flowers to avoid a summer backlog of routine chores

Ógra Fianna Fáil Holiday at Home campaign visits Cork Cork members of Ógra Fianna Fáil gave a warm welcome to the Holiday at Home campaign when it visited the Cork City on Monday last the 14th of June according to Ógra Leas-Cathaoirleach Joseph O’Neill. “Ógra launched a campaign to encourage people to holiday at home this year and made a stop in Cork City where we visited the English Market to take to spread the word. “I was delighted to see such enthusiasm and energy from the Ógra members who visited and our local members who turned out to support the Holiday at Home campaign including local TD Michael McGrath and Councillors Seamus McGrath, Kenneth O’Flynn and Mary Shields.” “Tourist numbers dropped by 12% in 2009 and Fáilte Ireland estimate that this has meant a loss in revenue of €1billion to the country.” “Over 200,000 people work in tourism around the country and this loss of revenue has had, and will have an impact on their jobs.” “Rural economies are especially impacted by tourism and it is vital that every encouragement is given to people to holiday at home.” “It was one of many stops on Ógra’s campaign but I was really encouraged by the reaction we got to our campaign in Cork,” concluded Joseph O’Neill.

The East Cork inter-pub karaoke competition in aid of Ballycotton lifeboat continues The inter-pub karaoke competition in aid Ballycotton lifeboat continued at Tosh Cahill’s Bar, Cloyne on Friday night, 11 June. The event was well supported and the singers were in fine voice. The judges had a tough decision to make at the end of the night as the competition was strong. Eventually, the decision was that Sarah O’Donovan and Kerry Murphy would go forward to represent Tosh Cahill’s Bar at the final in Garryvoe Hotel on 30 July. The unsuccessful contestants were reminded that they would have other opportunities to qualify as heats take place each weekend up to the night before the Grand Final. They were thanked for their participation and Tosh Cahill’s Bar of hosting the heat. Next Friday, 18 June, the competition goes to McGrath’s Bar, Ballycotton and on Saturday, 19 June, to Aunty Biddy’s, Cloyne. The June heats will finish off in Waves Café & Wine Bar on Friday,

Ask your Solicitor
By David Williams B.Comm, Dip.Com.Law, Solicitor”
Enduring Powers Many people as they become older are worried about what will happen to them in old age. Life expectancy has increased, and sadly ailments of the mind including dementia, Alzheimers and stroke are more common as increasing numbers reach a very old age. When someone loses their mental faculties it is necessary for a relative to make care decisions for them, and also to look after their assets and finances. It is possible to decide in advance who will assume that role, by signing a document called an Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA). This document appoints one or more “attorneys”, usually children or other family members. An EPA can only be signed while a person is of sound mind, or at the very least capable of understanding the nature of the document. Both a doctor and a solicitor must sign statements confirming mental capacity. The EPA document only comes into force if the person who made it – called the “donor”- subsequently loses their mental faculties. This is again certified by a doctor, and the EPA is registered in the Office of Wards of Court. When the document is registered, the attorney takes over legal control of the donor’s affairs, and also makes personal care decisions for them. If someone loses their mental faculties who has not signed an EPA, it may be necessary to apply to have them made a “ward of court”. This is an application to the High Court to have someone, including the State, appointed to manage the assets. Another document that deserves mention is a “living will”. The idea of a living will is that it gives instructions on what medical care the person is to receive. It usually specifies that life-saving measures are to be withheld in certain circumstances, when the patient no longer enjoys a quality of life. Unfortunately there is no legislation dealing with living wills, and the legality of them is doubtful. As a result doctors and hospitals are not obliged to follow the instructions in a living will. You should speak to a solicitor if you have questions or if you have concerns about any of these issues.

Is minic dom san aimsir caite tiomáint sa Fhrainc ar na mór-bhealaigh sa tír sin áit ina bhfuil dola le híoc freisin, ach tá córas éagsúil acu sa Fhrainc ná mar atá anseo. Agus taitníonn córas na Fraince liom go mór mar cheapaim go bhfuil sé i bhfad níos chothromaí don tiománaí, don phobail i gcoitinne agus don Stáit. Anseo in Éirinn is léir nach bhfuil an córas dola ar na mór-bhealaigh cothrom mar is féidir le tiománaí dul paiste gairid ar an mór-bhealach gan aon dola a íoc – rud nach féidir a dhéanamh sa Fhrainc, go bhfios dom, ach go háraithe. Má fhágann tú Corcaigh ar do shlí go dtí Baile Átha Cliath caithfidh tú cupa dola a íoc anois i ndá áit – i Mainistir Fhear Maighe agus arís eile díreach lasmuigh de Phort Laoise. Ach is féidir leis na mílte duine úsáid a bhaint as an mór-bhealach idir an dá láthair íocaíochta seo gan pingin dola a íoc. Sa tslí seo tá taistealaithe a théann ó cheann ceann na mór-bhealaigh seo

ag íoc do dhaoine nach úsáideann ach cuid ar leith den mór-bhealach. Agus níl cothromaíocht ag baint le seo, dar liom. Im’ thuairim-se bheadh sé níos fearr ar gach duine, idir tiománaithe, an Stáit, na dreamanna leis an gconartha an córas dola a rith, dá mbeadh córas dola difriúil i bhfeidhm. Sé mo mholadh mar chóras nua is ea go bhfaigheadh gach duine a théann ar an mór bealach, is cuma cá háit a thosaíonn sé, ticéad ‘iontrála’ ann, agus go n-íocfadh sé méad áraithe bunaithe ar fhad a thuras - sé sin go mbeadh bun agus ard costas ann. Gan amhras bheadh sé tábhachtach gan ach luach an-bheag a lorg abair 20 cent an míle do gluaisteán, agus 50 cent do feithiclí eile, agus gan ligean do costas iomlán dul thar an €5 nó €10! Bheadh seo níos chothromaí ar gach duine agus thuillfeadh an córas seo breis airgid a d’fhéadfaí a aith-infheistiú i maisiúcháin na bóithre seo chomh maith le hairgead a chur ar fáil do na húdaráis áitiúla le caitheamh ar thaobh sráideanna is cúl bóithre na tuaithe agus sna bailte

mórthimpeall na tíre. Rud eile a dhéanann na Francaigh is ea go gcuireann siad cosc ar fheithiclí troma taisteal in áiteanna ar leith, agus d’fhéadfaí cosc, agus fíneáil réasúnta trom, a chur ar fheithiclí nach úsáideann na mór-bhealaí mar nach bhfuil fonn orthu an tolla a íoc. Sa tslí seo úsáidfeadh breis daoine na mór-bhealaí, bheadh na cúl bóithre tuaithe níos sábhála ó timpistí (b’fhéidir), agus bheadh córas airgid ag an Stáit chun cur leis an ioncam cánach atá acu. Ní fheadair an dtarlódh aon athrú, áfach?

If you fancy a weekend of surfing and music, you better get your skates on a get down to Bundoran in two weeks for Sea Session, because Cois Fharraige isn't happening this year As it grew later and later in the year, and details failed to surface for the country's premier surf and music festival, there was some concern as to its future. But the festival's organisers have assured festival goers that though Cois Fharriage will take a break for 2010, it will return to Kilkee in style in May 2011. The organisers have also asked fans to

Not only have IndiePendence expanded to accommodate four stages, including a new 3500 capacity permanent structure for the Bavaria Main Stage, they're creating a new festival village called The Square, which will feature a 1000 capacity tent for music and comedy, as well as shops, stalls, art installations and chill-

GAA - Douglas footballers join forces The girls from the Douglas ladies Gaelic football club along with the boys who will travel to this years Féile competition to represent Douglas, are to join forces this coming Saturday (19th) for a sponsored walk to try to raise badly needed funds for both clubs. Walk organiser and ladies football coach, Seamus Cotter decided it would be better to bring the boys on board as well because he said "the same people would be asked twice for sponsorship as both clubs had similar ideas" . The walk will start from Hartys quay and continue as far as Blackrock castle before returning to Hartys quay and then onto the club where there will be refreshments and some prizes to be given out. It is hoped that there will be lots of support on the day from both sets of players and their parents and all going well the weather will be kind to us. More details of the walk can be found on www.douglasladiesgaa.ie .

G.A.A. FOCUS Snippets from the Local and National Scene By Pat Harrington St. Finbarr’s vs. Bride Rovers This, the first game on the night was of a very poor standard; the Barr’s will have been delighted to have got over the finish line. Basically it is the end result that counts and not the performance. Bride will have been disappointed to lose out but the blues, to their credit never gave up and so reaped the reward. Bride Rovers now meet Glen Rovers in round 2. The Drawn Game We are continuously being told that the present Cork football squad is the strongest we’ve seen in years. This may be so but the team has got to get over the psychological problem that continues to stand in their way – namely the Kerry team. I spoke to a former Cork manager after the game in Killarney; he suggested that there was a lack of penetration up front. Our forwards are too, light he said – very good footballers but lacking in physicality. Kerry pull a lot of players behind the ball and Cork play into their hands by going cross field with the ball. The movement is slow and makes it difficult to break the line. Perhaps they fear loss of possession. Yes, this is a talented side but the team must be more direct in their approach. Waterford vs. Clare This was a very entertaining contest with Waterford 7 / 2 on to win. Clare fielded a very young team that included seven under 21s. The Banner men played with the wind in the opening half. After a slow start the half forwards ran at the Waterford defense causing huge problems for the Déise. Darach Honan at full forward proved quite a handful for Waterford’s rookie full back. Just four points separated the teams at the break. The Déise had the benefit of wind assistance in the second half. Prendergast was introduced in the half back line and this line of defense proved excellent for Waterford. Tony Browne was always in the right place and picked up an amount of loose ball. Clare were not to be found wanting but the wind had a major bearing on the game. Waterford worked the ball out of defense very well. I thought their forward division played as individuals, much of their shooting being from long distances while a better placed colleague was ignored. I was surprised to see Dan Shanahan last so long on the field. The full back is there for the taking in the Munster final. Na Piarsaigh vs. Glen Rovers On the night Na Piarsaigh were excellent in the pace of their game and on their first touch. All four goals were of a very high standard. Will they challenge for honours? As yet it is hard to say. The question is, can they repeat

the performance? While not wishing to take from the Na Piarsaigh victory, it must be said the Glen looked very poor. The management will have been very disappointed with this performance. Perhaps it was just one of those nights. Douglas vs. Blackrock Numbers 5-14-16 Douglas secured their senior status for No winner. 2010/2011 by virtue of their victory over Next week’s jackpot €1150euro Blackrock in the senior hurling championship. While Blackrock is a club with a deservedly proud tradition, Douglas is endeavoring to establish themselves in the senior ranks. At the moment Blackrock are in transition and like all city clubs are finding life difficult. Congratulations to the Douglas squad and their management team. I have no wish to gloat, nor indeed do I have reason to do so but I • An African soccer team wearing a set of gear originally worn by Everton schoolboys in Togher Cork, and sponsored by the Lough Credit Union.
