The Word

by George Thompson - Editor

Last Wednesday, 23rd of June was the 25th anniversary of the Air India disaster off our south coast. It’s a day and a time that will last in my mind and I’m sure the minds of anyone who served in the Navy at the time and indeed anyone connected with the disaster. On the eve of the anniversary I watched a documentary on RTE called Air India 182 about the lead up to the atrocity with statements from relatives, police, air traffic controllers etc. and it was one of the saddest programmes I have watched. I have great pride in what our boys in the Navy did at the crash site and for the crew of the LE Aisling who coordinated the search and recovery operation. Four of the crew including the captain received the Distinguished Service Medal for their part in the events that unfolded. The only part of the documentary I was a bit dismayed at was that the role of the Irish Navy wasn’t fully acknowledged, while the R.A.F. and the Freighter at the scene were. I would like to personally extend my deepest sympathies to all the relatives of those who perished. May the souls of those recovered and the almost 200 who weren’t, rest in peace. Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan took another step toward the big time in his boxing career with another win at Neptune Stadium last weekend. The Cork boxer travels to London next week for a press conference with promoter Frank Warren to announce his up coming fights to be screened on SKY Sports, the first of which is in Glasgow in the early autumn. Last weekend the Cdr. George Crosbie Naval Branch of the O.N.E. had their Annual Collection at Douglas Court Shopping Centre and local churches. The Branch would like to extend their sincere thanks to the public once again for their kind generosity. This weekend

RAPID cuts will see big difference for Cork

We’d love to hear from you. If you have any news, views or issues you’d like to see covered, write to the Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas West, Cork or by e-mail to frontdesk@douglaspost.ie Please include your name and address and a contact number. Letters may be edited due to space considerations.

From Womb to Tomb Dear Editor, Eire 2010: From conception in danger of life being snuffed out by faulty HSE scanner equipment. Childhood: possibly blighted by paedophiles. Adulthood: employment slim to nil. Marriage or partnership: throw of the dice, taxed to hilt. Retirement: no respite, fear in your home, loneliness,

no Christmas bonus, no room at the Inn, i.e. hospitals, nursing homes. Death: Even then peace not guaranteed! Resting place maltreated by vandals! Thank God, we the vast majority free from above including mise. Wonderful caring wife, family and friends. But too many vulnerable children falling through H.S.E. cracks. Elections now please!! NEWS this week that €80m is to be cut from the voluntary and community sectors is a disgrace and we here in Cork won’t be long in feeling the brunt of it. To me it seems like this sector, who work tirelessly to help people in disadvantaged areas and those facing varying degrees of poverty, is being continuously hit by cuts and it is simply not good enough. Togher-Mahon is the RAPID centre for the southern part of Cork city. If cuts are made to the RAPID scheme for development, it will add to the unemployment and lack of facilities in the .

area for the elderly, the young, the sick and the disadvantaged. The RAPID scheme has allowed the Togher-Mahon area to be prioritized when it came to funding for community development projects and there are many people employed to carry out this work. If the funding goes, so too do the jobs. Officials and volunteers working in the area of Community Development Projects (CDPs) funded under RAPID such as those in Togher-Mahon, have worked tirelessly with the National Community Development Forum and the Department of Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs to make their services more efficient and cost-effective and still they are being made cut further. There is a large element of volunteerism involved with these CDPs. People who have given of their time, effort and expertise because they believe in the advantage their have for their community and the people who live in their locality and need them. If the funding goes in this section, even their volunteer

positions will be gone and their work will be thankless to the government. The philosophy behind making cuts is that it will help restore the economy and get people back to work. These cuts will only help encourage poverty, make difficult situations even more difficult and increase unemployment. It’s definitely time to rethink the areas we’re cutting.

family ties with Geraldine Blake

In Praise of the Humble Geranium You can’t beat a geranium for colour, pizzazz and downright cheerfulness. They are reliable, hardy and easy to grow. I met my first geranium in 1988 when I shared a flat with my brother in inner London. The flat was a complete dump but outside the window in the living room was a flower box with an almost dead geranium in it. It was one long, useless stalk but it was sitting in soil that had turned rock hard and with all the toxins of the city and obvious neglect, it did really well to keep going. I felt sorry for it, so I took to watering it everyday or when I remembered. Some months later, my efforts were rewarded when out of the end of the useless stalk, a tiny red bloom appeared. I was so proud of the little fella and felt gratified. I have been a fan of the brave geranium ever since. My husband hates them; he says their pong aggravates his hay fever. Nevertheless, shortly after we moved into the marital home - a glorified shoe box - I trotted down to the garden centre at the first opportunity and bought three pots of flaming red geraniums. I put my new treasures on the window ledge in the bathroom where they could enjoy the most sun. Hubbie wasn’t happy but his grumblings went unheeded. We were always getting locked out

of our flat but luckily we lived on the ground floor and so we kept the tiny bathroom window slightly open at all times, confident that no passing burglar would attempt to climb through something so small. My husband, being a fair sized chunk of man, and me being a virtual dwarf, it was left up to me to do all the ‘breaking and entering.’ But that window was very small and there would be moments when I would get stuck and I’d panic thinking that I was going to plummet head first into the toilet bowl which was directly underneath. One particular day, Hubbie rings me at work to tell me that he was at home but was locked out and would I be leaving anytime soon. Out of pure meanness, I told him that I didn’t have a key either and that I was damned if I was going to climb through that bloody window yet again. When I got home, Hubbie had shed as many of his clothes as was decently possible and was hanging out the window with one leg in and one leg out. “Mind my geraniums,” I barked at him and with sweat pouring from his brow, he very patiently plucked up each geranium from inside the window and handed them out to me. “Come to momma,” I crooned at my babies, and after I set them down gently on the ground, I turned back to my husband and

told him that I had the key after all. He cursed me and after a few minutes when he managed to extricate himself from the window, with all his limbs intact, I smiled brightly at him and said “Did you enjoy that?” He grinned back and said, “Not as much as this!” and then stooping

down, he plucked up the three geraniums and flung them across the car park. I managed to rescue the plants and most of the soil the pots were smashed to bits – and they continued to thrive back on the bathroom shelf, despite their mauling.

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn

As the fourth of July approaches I am reminded of a poem in the book ‘My Road’ by Marion Rose Horgan from Cobh. If you haven’t already got a copy, please rush out and get one, it’s a book well worth having and a keepsake you will always treasure. Marion tells us that her poem ‘Independence Day’ was written to celebrate the birth of her nephew, David Warren Hughes, on the 4th July 2002. It gives an entire new feeling to the occasion. Dave Horgan and his wife Trish were expecting their fifth child in 2002.Dave, who has always been a fan of America and all things American, thought that it would be really special if the baby could be born on Independence Day. Trish, who is the epitome of organization, was more interested in getting the baby into the world on the earliest possible date, but being the dutiful and devoted wife she is, she duly obliged and David Warren Hughes was born on Thursday, the fourth of July 2002, weighing in a sturdy 9lbs. Dave’s sister Marian Rose was icing a chocolate cake to celebrate the baby’s homecoming when these lines came to mind ... INDEPENDENCE DAY A brand new day, fourth of July, A newborn fills his lungs and cries. A new star’s shining in the skies It’s Independence Day. An eaglet starts to learn to fly, Under his mother’s watchful eye. He’s looking upwards to the sky It’s Independence Day. Life is so short, so let it be, Brimful of opportunity. I wish you deep serenity, It’s Independence Day.

ELECTRICITY PRICES AND RETROFIT COSTS “All the indicators are that electricity bills will go up by 4% to 5% this Autumn,” says Ciarán Lynch TD, Labour Deputy for Cork South Central Spokesperson on Energy. The admission by Minister Ryan in the Dáil last week that there will be a ‘4% to 5% rise in overall electricity prices’ is particularly worrying considering that he is making so little headway on ensuring energy efficiency programmes proceed. There is still no sign of the National Retrofit Programme as promised with much fanfare in the last budget. €50 million was allocated for that scheme and not one cent has yet been spent. This is the time of year when people get insulation fitted in their homes but they will not be able to get the grant aids promised as the scheme has disappeared without trace. We don’t even know what is envisaged for the much vaunted insulation programmes. We do know that in 2009 there was an underspend of approximately €35 million and because of the Minister’s failure to spend the funds it was sent back to the Department of Finance. Approximately €95 million had been set aside for much needed energy efficiency programmes in 2009. Just €55 million was spent. This is a scandal when you consider how many older people and people on low incomes are living in substandard housing around the country. We must not underestimate the impact of the increase in electricity prices on households that are already struggling to cope with their utility bills. At this present time of economic hardship it is a serious blow.

Sciatica Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve and its branches — from your back down your buttock and leg. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body. It runs from your spinal cord to your buttock and hip area and down the back of each leg. Sciatica is a symptom, not a disorder. The radiating pain of sciatica signals another problem involving the nerve, such as a herniated disk. Depending on the cause, the pain of acute sciatica — which may be quite uncomfortable — usually goes away on its own within a couple of months.

Symptoms Pain that radiates from your lower (lumbar) spine to your buttock and down the back of your leg is the hallmark of sciatica. You may feel the discomfort almost anywhere along the nerve pathway, but it's especially likely to follow a path from your low back to your buttock and the back of your thigh and calf. The pain can vary widely, from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation or excruciating

discomfort. Sometimes it may feel like a jolt or electric shock. It may be worse when you cough or sneeze, and prolonged sitting can aggravate symptoms. Usually only one lower extremity is affected. Sciatica symptoms include: Pain Numbness or muscle weakness Tingling or a pins-and-needles feeling A loss of bladder or bowel control

Causes Your sciatic nerve branches from your spinal cord through your hips and buttocks and down the back of each leg. This nerve controls many of the muscles in your lower legs and provides feeling to your thighs, legs and feet. Sciatica may develop when a nerve root is compressed in your lower (lumbar) spine — often as a result of a herniated disk in your lower back.

Treatments

stretching, exercise, and use of over-thecounter (OTC) medications. Beyond the selfcare measures you may have taken, your doctor may recommend the following: Physical therapy Prescription drugs Lifestyle remedies For most people, sciatica responds well to selfcare measures. You'll heal more quickly if you continue with your usual activities, but avoid what may have triggered the pain in the first place. Although resting for a day or so may provide some relief, prolonged bed rest isn't a good idea. In the long run, inactivity will make your signs and symptoms worse. In addition to resuming usual activities, try the following measures: Cold packs Hot packs Stretching Over-the-counter medications Regular exercise If you would like more information contact Garvan at Lynch’s Pharmacy on 4366923.

For most people, sciatica responds well to self-care measures. These may include use of alternating cold packs and hot packs,

Lawns & Hedges If the weather turns hot and dry remove the grass box from mowers and raise the height of the cut slightly. As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower Garden Start thinking about ordering spring-flowering bulbs. Lift tulips once foliage has died down, and dry off the bulbs. Sow hardy annuals for autumn colour, in a nursery bed or cold frame. Start taking semi-ripe cuttings of shrubs and root in a cold frame. Watch out for black spot and mildew on roses, and spray promptly with

fungicide. Start feeding hanging baskets and other containers 6 weeks after planting.

Kitchen Garden Sow oriental brassicas direct or in a nursery bed. Make a last sowing of a small early carrot variety. Summer prune cherries and plums. Prop up laden plum branches to prevent breakage. Cut dill, fennel

E.1.2 million sanctioned for Blackrock Village Cllr Kieran McCarthy has welcomed the sanctioning of E.1.2m to begin the first phase of the Blackrock Village Renewal scheme in late autumn by Cork City Council. The scheme comprises the provision of a children’s playground and a small park with plaza and seating within the area of the community centre complex with associated works. The old public toilets are also to be removed. Commenting Cllr McCarthy noted: “This Blackrock pier area warrants a serious tidy up and the implementation of a public realm strategy should not also bring the community centre and its environs into focus but also the riverside and collapsed pier. The pier dates to around 1820, the stone of which it is said came from Beaumont Quarry. The pier at the moment is overrun with the invasive and unchecked species Japanese Knotweed. The most welcome playground and small park with plaza and seating to be located in the Ursuline Convent and the adjoining demense will exist in a landscape first developed in the 1720s by the Tuckey family, who were the first to take down part of the town walls of the city in the early eighteenth century and build a new street and a quay on a site which later was culverted over to form the Grand Parade. I would like that the heritage whether it be the history or the flora or fauna of the harbour area be harnessed – that the public realm is thought out and harnesses the pillars of the area’s identity, harnessing the essence of what makes Blackrock great and attractive to the many people who live and work within the area and also to the many people who walk the area frequently coming from other parts of the city.“

Cllr. Laura McGonigle

My Year as Deputy Lord Mayor. Thursday last, my term as Deputy Lord Mayor came to an end. When the Lord Mayor asked me to say a few words to mark the conclusion of my term in office I had to think long and hard about it. How do you sum up twelve months in just a few minutes? Do you talk about the countless charity events you’ve attended, the sporting triumphs you’ve witnessed, the causes that you lent your support to because it was something you believed in? Well I could talk about all of those things, and believe me each of them was special in its own way. However, I just want to reflect on the people of Cork and their tremendous spirit, pride and love for each other and this city of ours. I was struck by the amount of time and effort, the selfless dedication, that so many people give to their communities, to people less fortunate than ourselves, with no expectation of any payback, purely because that’s what we do in Cork. Community spirit. You cannot buy it, you cannot teach it. You can only live it. Time and again that’s what I saw this year in Cork. Whether it was seeing off the Cork Clipper, raising money for Hassan and Hussein - Cork’s little fighters, attending events for charities in Cork or for charities run by Cork people abroad, holding sporting events for the special Olympics movement or dancing with the elderly at an event like the over 60’s talent competition I saw it. The behind the scenes work of so many people who just want to make Cork a better place to work in, live in and visit. The bigger the challenge, the better seems to be our philosophy here in Cork and it was an honour to witness so much of that rebel spirit first hand.

An Giota Gaeilge Le Liam Ó Móráin

Clár Cuimsitheach Féilte Idirnáisiúnta sa Chathair Tá na scoileanna dúnta ar feadh cúpla mí agus na mílte duine ar saoire. Cleas amháin a úsáideann lucht turasóireachta cheantair éagsúla ná féile a bhunú chun giota stair áitiúil a ceiliúradh nó chun an cultúir nó an litríocht a phlé, nó chun cúrsaí spóirt is siamsaíochta a chleachtadh. Ní haon eisceacht é Corcaigh, agus ó thús na bliana tá clár cuimsitheach i bhfeidhm a ritheann féile amháin isteach díreach go dtí an chéad fhéile eile. Fiú chun an tábhacht a bhaineann le féilte sa phobal agus sa turasóireacht a léiriú agus a neartú, ritheann TG4 sraith clár a clúdaíonn raon mhór féilte na tíre agus ní cloíonn siad le féilte a tharlaíonn sna Ghaeltachtaí amháin, nó ní chloíonn siad leo san a pléann litríocht na Gaeilge nó le cultúir na Gaeilge amháin. Tá moladh mhór ag dul dóibh as ucht an beartais sin, dar liom. Ach ag filleadh ar Chorcaigh agus na féilte uile acu – tá clú agus cáil nach mór aimsithe ag an gcathair de bharr an líon mór de féilte idirnáisiúnta a tionóltar gach bliain ann. Tosaíonn na féilte idirnáisiúnta gach bliain leis an bhFéile Idirnáisiúnta Chóir a bhíonn ar siúil um Cáisc. Tagann raon mhór dhaoine ó cheann ceann an domhain chun páirt a glacadh sna comórtais agus is minic a ritheann eagraíochtaí pobail nó eaglasta ceolchoirm, ar an dtaobh den bhféile, chun airgead a bhailiú do charthanacht, nó do fundúireacht tionscnamh tógála éigin. Ar cheann daoibh san tá eaglais Naomh Mhichíl ar an gCarraig Dhubh a thionól ceolchoirm le cóir is amhránaithe idirnáisiúnta le cúpla bliain anuas. Ritheann dhá mór fheilte ansin i rith an tsamhraidh idir Féile Chorcaí Lár an tSamhraidh le clár eachtra chuimsitheach agus suntasach. agus an fhéile cheoil, ‘Beo sa Marquee’, sraith cheolchoirm a mhaireann ar feadh dhá mhí nach mór, le ceoltóirí mór le rá le haitheantas domhanda, agus atá ar siúl faoi láthair. Tá cúrsaí bádóireachta agus seoltóireachta an-mhór i gCorcaigh freisin agus aithnítear seo go háraithe nuair a thugann rás domhanda ar chuairt – mar a tharlóidh an tseachtain seo (amárach) nuair a thiocfaidh ‘The Clipper Round the World Race’ ar chuairt ar Cheann Sáile idir an 2ú agus an 9ú Iúil. Díreach ina dhiaidh sin tionólfar ‘Seachtain Chorcaí’ – seachtain de rás ar mhuir ina ghlacfaidh scata mór seoltóirí is bádóirí ón gcathair, ón dtír seo agus ó roinnt tíortha san Eoraip páirt. Is i mBun an Tábhairne a tionólfar an ‘seachtain rásaíochta báid’ seo ón 10ú go dtí an 16ú Iúil – an tseachtain seo chugainn. Amach anseo, san bhfómhair, i mí Deireadh Fómhair, tionólfar ceann den na fhéilte snagcheoil is mó san Eoraip, nuair a bheidh ‘The Guinness Jazz festival’ ar siúl ar fud na cathrach. Agus i mí na Samhna tionólfar féile mór scannánaíochta sa chathair freisin nuair a bheidh an ‘Corona Cork Film Festival’ ann. Níl anseo ach na príomh-fhéilte agus níor mhiste dul ar líne na n-eagraíochtaí turasóireachta ar fud an chontae chun breis eolais a fháil faoi shonraí éagsúla na bhféilte go léir atá ar siúl le linn an tsamhraidh seo. Michael McGrath has welcomed news that construction work on the new building for Ballygarvan National School is expected to get underway in the autumn. Planning permission for the new school was granted in April and the Department of Education & Skills has now reached agreement with the County Council on various issues which arose in the grant of planning. ‘Barring any unforeseen obstacles, construction work is due to begin in the autumn on the new 16-classroom school and associated facilities on a greenfield site in Ballygarvan village, close to the site of the existing school. The contractor must now submit certain information to the Department and, all going well, the Department will issue a letter of acceptance which will be quickly followed by the commencement of construction work,’ according to Deputy McGrath. ‘The new school is being developed using the modular build method and construction is expected to take approx. 5 months.

URGENTLY

Pupils and staff will transfer in to the new school building during the 2010/11 school year. ‘I would like to pay tribute to the Principal, Staff, Parents’ Association and everyone associated with the school for their commitment to providing the best possible school environment for the pupils at Ballygarvan N.S.,’ stated Deputy McGrath. Deputy McGrath also confirmed that the construction of the new 16 classroom school for Star of the Sea, Passage West, is now at full tender stage. There is a concerning increase in the number of women who are being abused, controlled and stalked through various forms of technology. That’s according to Jerry Buttimer Fine Gael Senator for Cork South Central who – together with a group of TDs and Senators – met with Women’s Aid (on Wednesday 23rd June 2010). In a new report detailing disclosures of domestic violence to its National Freephone Helpline (1800 341 900), Women’s Aid, the national charity helping women and their children living with abuse, outlined its concerns. Many callers to the Helpline disclosed that their current or former boyfriends, husbands and partners were using many forms of technology – old and new – to control, coerce, and intimidate them. This included a variety of telephone, surveillance, and computer technologies. Women disclosed that their home and mobile phone calls were monitored, as well as all of their texts. Some spoke of how their phone conversations were being recorded. Others found cameras secretly installed to monitor their every movement at home. According to Senator Buttimer, “Domestic violence is a huge problem within Irish society. It is deeply worrying that there is a growing trend of women being monitored and harassed through technology. Women should not have to live in fear and feel like they are being constantly monitored and that their privacy is completely controlled. It is frightening to think that this abuse can continue even after the relationship ends with almost a fifth of callers reporting that they were being abused by their former boyfriends, husbands and partner.” According to the Women’s Aid report this abuse included women being bombarded with texts and calls often telling them in explicit detail how they will be attacked or even killed. Younger women reported that their current or former boyfriends were stalking them on social networking sites. Margaret Martin, Director of Women’s Aid spoke at the meeting. She said, “In 2009 we heard from women whose online use was being tracked and scrutinised and whose partners demanded access to their private email and social networking accounts. We also heard from women whose partners and ex-partners had placed lies about them on internet sites. We also heard from women who had been photographed and filmed without their consent, sometimes having sex, and having the images uploaded to the internet.” Senator Jerry Buttimer urged women in this situation to check out the new Women’s Aid website. He said, “It is encouraging that a service like Women’s Aid has started to address this very serious problem. While technology can be used as a way of abusing and controlling women, it can also provide information and support and promote safety. The new Women’s Aid website promotes online safety for women by providing informative guides for protecting safety while using your home or mobile phone, accessing the internet, engaging with social network sites, and guarding against cyber-stalking. I hope that for the many women who access our website for support and information it continues to be a lifeline, online.” The new Women’s Aid website, HYPERLINK “http://www.womensaid. ie” www.womensaid.ie was funded by the Avon Speak Out against Domestic Violence programme.

June 2010 There has been a lot in the news recently about planned changes to pensions. The age at which people qualify for a state pension will increase to 66 in 2014, 67 in 2021 and 68 in 2028. Ireland’s population is ageing and by 2050 it is estimated that 45% of the people living here will be over 60 which is up 28% today. With the beautiful weather we are experiencing our weekly coach trips to different places of interest are enjoyed by all. Last week’s trip

The homemade cakes, tea and coffee which Anne Cogan produced for us on our visit to the fort set outside overlooking the harbour “what a gem of a tea shop”, it is well worth a visit, and afterwards we went to Dinos restaurant in Kinsale for fish and chips where we were well looked after by Denise, “well done “.As usual the trip to Sherkin is very popular and we only have a few spaces left on the coach, so please let me know beforehand if you are interested in joining us. In The Loop with Peter Bowles

Live at the Marquee is in full swing at the moment with Dara O Brian taking to the stage later tonight in his first of two sold out dates. Acts yet to play include Christy Moore, Declan Sinnott, Snoop Dog, Tony Bennett and Madness. So far JLS, Paul Weller and Al Green are some of the names to entertain the Cork crowd. One other artist that pleased fans was 80s superstar Blondie. She played for over an hour with an array of smash hits finishing on her epic classic “Heart of Glass”. Other entertainment in Cork this week will come from the Cork Clipper festival. Kinsale Harbour is currently decorated with international flags adorning the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race Fleet. All ten yachts have now crossed the finish line and the crews are enjoying a heroes’ welcome and a well earned rest ahead of the Cork Clipper Festival which begins in Kinsale on Friday 2nd July. The town boasts 14 venues hosting 20 national and international musical acts. As well

as Artisan Food and Craft markets there will be circus entertainment and walking tours to display the beautiful surroundings of Ireland’s “Gourmet Capital” to the anticipated 3000 overseas visitors. On Wednesday 07 July the fleet will make its way in a parade of Sail to Cork Harbour. Cork City is no stranger to international celebrations; since playing host to the Tall Ships in 1991, Cork was crowned City of Culture in 2005 and very recently was named as one of Lonely Planet’s “Top Ten Cities 2010”. To celebrate the Cork Clipper’s homecoming in style the Port of Cork will be transformed into a Race Village with a large stage for music events and food, drinks and crafts stalls. The main stage on Albert Quay will play host to several big name musical acts including Fred, John Spillane, Crystal Swing and The Walls. For more info and to check out the full event programme log onto corkclipperfestival.com. Last week marked the one year anniversary of Michael Jackson's

death. On the web, though, people are mostly just totting up how much the Jackson Estate has earned in the past year. Jackson's mother, Katherine, claims her son was murdered because he was

"worth so much more dead than alive". On this evidence, she may be right. Sales figures released today reveal that Jackson has sold in excess of 4 million albums and singles in the UK alone since

his death, while the singer's total posthumous earnings are estimated at approximately $1billion. According to Billboard, the figure quoted takes in $429million worth of music sales, including a whopping $1.5million in ringtone sales and approximately $6million in internet licensing. The Jackson Estate also earned a total of

$392million from the film and television industry, including profits from the documentary film 'This Is It', and $6.5million in unreturned ticket sales from the series of cancelled concerts at London's O2 Arena. A source said: "Amy rocked up at the right-hand side and told the stage manager she had been invited to sing with him.

He put his foot down and told her that would not happen." Proper order too!! Katy Perry joined the X-Factor judging panel last Monday as a guest judge at the Dublin auditions. Cork Coastal Rowing Association Whitegate Championship Regatta – Sunday 20 June, 2010. It was well worth the early start for Clubs that headed down to Whitegate Championship Regatta this Sunday. It’s been several years since we’ve had such a sunny day out on the beach and the competition on the water was every bit as hot. The day got off to a super start with the Vet Mixed race and Passage West wining by just a quarter length across the finish line. Again with the Senior Mixed there was a very tight finish between crews from Rushbrooke and Passage West, with Rushbrooke just taking the win. Rushbrooke’s Under 18 men’s crew had a comfortable win with Passage West’s Under 18 ladies taking first spot. The Pre Vet Men’s race was very hard fought with the crew from Passage West just missing out catching Rushbrooke’s crew at the finish line. It was then the turn of our junior crews to show us just how much they have improved since the start of the season. The Under 12 girls and boys races were run concurrently and all crews managed to stay in the same pack with a very strong finish from Rushbrook’s girls and Passage West’s boys taking first places. Crosshaven’s Under 14

Beginners took an early lead and won their first championship race. The Under 14 girls had a great race with Passage west taking the early lead just ahead of Whitegate, Crosshaven and Rushbrooke. The Crosshaven crew took over the lead after the turn and kept on to that lead over the finish line. The Under 14 boys race was won by a very strong crew from Passage West. These boys have been rowing together for the past three years and it shows. There was super rowing from each of the crews on the water with an excellent fight for second place with Kinsale taking advantage of an excellent turn. Rushbrooke’s Under 16 girls won their race while Passage West boy’s took the honours. Whitegate had success in the senior categories winning the Under 21 and Intermediate Ladies, Intermediate and Senior Men’s races. Rushbrooke’s ladies won the Pre Vet, Vet, Junior and Senior Ladies categories. Club of the Day was very narrowly won by Rushbrooke. Great to see crews and colours from the newly reformed Fishermens on the water. Cork Coastal Rowing Association’s Chairman: “Well done to everyone for today, it was an absolutely excellent regatta and thanks to Whitegate Rowing Club for hosting it. Our sport is in excellent shape and it’s all down to the efforts of each of the clubs, so well done.” The next regatta will be held on Cuskinny Beach, Cobh on Sunday 4th July. See you all on the water.

St Michaels GAA club’s 15th Annual Golf Classic St Michaels GAA club’s 15th Annual Golf Classic took place on Friday June 25th at Douglas Golf club. A Launch for the tournament took place with a reception on June 18th, in the city centre. The Golf Classic is the longest running fundraiser in the club’s history and the most successful. It has attracted a huge following of supporters annually, as well as sponsorship from the local business community. All proceeds from the day are put back into the club to support its players. It is particularly popular fundraising event with past players of St Michaels, who reunite at the fundraiser to support their club. The event was packed to capacity again this year and its popularity is a tribute to its many supporters across the community. At the launch and the event itself club chairman Sean Horgan was overwhelmed at the turnout again this year, especially in the current economic climate. He praised the ongoing work of players, mentors and volunteers as well as families of players for their hard work, spirit and dedication. Congratulations to winning teams and to all participants on the day.

DOUGLAS GAA Senior Hurling: Last Saturday afternoon the senior hurlers hosted Ferrybank of Waterford. Douglas got off to a great start when Finbarr Desmond goaled and this set the tone for the remainder of the contest. The Douglas team featured the backbone of their championship team with Alan Barry, James Moylan, Cormac Dineen and Stephen Moylan featuring prominently. The highlight of the game was a fantastic solo run from Odhrán Mulrooney at the start of the second half which culminated in a Mark Harrington goal. Douglas were convincing winners and Brian O’Loughlin and Co. Monaghan native Gareth Sullivan both impressed. Meanwhile, Thomas Noonan and Philip Shine also played very well despite completing their second game within twenty four hours, having played for the Junior hurlers against Erin’s

Own on Friday evening. Douglas’ next senior hurling league game is scheduled for Sunday 1st July when St. Finbarr’s provide the opposition. Throw in at Douglas is fixed for 7.15pm Club Sponsorships: There was very good news for Douglas Hurling & Football Club during the past week as Ryan’s SuperValu in Grange formally launched their sponsorship of the senior hurling and football teams. This follows on from their generous sponsorship of last year’s successful premier intermediate hurling championship winning team. Indeed, since • Eugene Mulrooney & Pat Harrington of Douglas GAA accepting sponsorship from Tom O'Connor of The South County Douglas Hurling & Football Club and Ryan’s SuperValu Last Tuesday evening Douglas accepted a cheque on the minor joined forces, Douglas have been minor football and hurling committee’s behalf. Tom and his undefeated in nine Cork county managers Eugene Mulrooney and brother Colm played with the club championship contests. Douglas Pat Harrington respectively were and are regulars at championship Hurling & Football Club recognises guests of Tom O’Connor of The matches and their sponsorship is a the valuable contribution of South County. Once again the significant contribution in easing Ryan’s SuperValu to the club and minor teams are the beneficiary’s the financial burden of the minor local community in general and is of generous sponsorship from the committee. For more news visit very grateful for the support of South County and Eugene and Pat www.douglasgaa.com proprietor Liam Ryan and staff.

G.A.A. FOCUS Snippets from the Local and National Scene By Pat Harrington Limerick Hurling May I say at the outset that Limerick gave of their best against Cork in their Munster championship encounter. The chairman of the Limerick County Board took umbrage with the negative comments emanating from the after match analysis of the game. He referred also to the fine display of the Intermediate team. There was no mention of the fact that having won the intermediate championship in 2009 the Cork selectors had to field a completely new team this year. I think he should rethink this discussion. The chairman also said he was pleased with the performance of the senior team, even though with all due respect to the lads they were out of their depth. Cork never got out of second gear. With regard to Limerick senior hurling I reckon there are a number of bodies ought to get together and I suggest the Limerick County Board, Christy Cooney, Pádraig Duffy and the players. This squad has not won a game all season. The number of counties that are in serious contention for all-Ireland honours can be counted on one hand, reinforcing the fact that hurling needs a Limerick team capable of competing. Rumour has it that J.P. McManus

calls the shots and if it is correct to say that he is a Limerick hurling sponsor the rumour may be well founded. I believe that if the Good Lord came and blessed all those players the squad still would not be good enough to challenge the top six or seven counties. The Limerick chairman stated his disappointment at the poor support shown to his side for the game against Cork. One would have to be a real stalwart to turn up to watch a team that is minus 20/25 of its best players. Of course the Munster Council should have taken a look at its ticket prices for the game. The combined attendance for the semi-finals was 24,000; sadly this was an all-time low. Marketing Plan “Complete a three year marketing plan to optimize the value of the Cork brand” – this is part of the strategic plan. I attended the two hurling championship games and the Kerry game, all at Páirc Uí Chaoimh. Red fm distributed some Cork colours. I could see no reason why Cork County Board did not give out some car flags on such occasions. There is a distinct lack of colour surrounding our big games; would a decent display of banners not have helped promote the Cork brand. Non-Exam From the middle of May to June 20th. Douglas minor hurlers played seven games in the nonexam hurling league. Without this competition these players would have absolutely no games

whatsoever. Similarly there was a non-exam football competition. Puck Around The county Board has decided that there will be no pucking around for young lads during half-time breaks in Páirc Uí Chaoimh in the future. On a recent Saturday night there were over 400 kids pucking around creating a very dangerous situation; surely a health and safety issue. I would sincerely love to see the kids playing and enjoying themselves but the numbers have certainly got out of hand. The Late Dermot Earley I was sad to hear of the untimely death of Dermot Earley. Dermot was a former Roscommon footballer; he was a powerfully built man, a marvelous fielder of the ball and a wonderful athlete. He played on the defeated Roscommon team in the 1980 final against Kerry. Dermot won two all-stars, a National league medal (I think) and coached both Roscommon and Kildare. His son, Dermot jnr. has been a magnificent footballer with Kildare over the years. Best of Luck The best of luck to David Hanrahan in the Munster Minor football final. Best wishes to the Douglas Féile team on their visit to Derry this weekend. More next week, Pat.
