Come Meet the Clipper Crew! Ever wondered what it would be like to conquer the seas and take part in a gruelling 35,000-mile race around the entire world? Well now is your chance to find out! As part of the Cork Clipper Festival, Red FM is presenting a free question and answer session “Meet the Clipper Crew”. Hear the fascinating tales of crashing waves, extreme temperatures, gigantic whales and guiding dolphins! Festival organizers have issued an open invitation to anyone whom may have an interest in the incredible feat undertaken by the crews of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. The Q&A session takes place on Thursday 8th July at 1pm on the main stage in Albert Quay’s specially constructed Race Village, in Cork City. Well done to St. Finbarr’s Pipeband who won their second consecutive All Ireland title in grade 3 at the All Ireland Pibeband Championships in Ballina last weekend. The band will compete in the Ulster Championships in Stormont at the end of July before heading to Glasgow two weeks later for the World Championships. Best of luck lads!

It was a how a summer’s day should be on the Marina last Saturday as the Lee Rowing Club held their annual Mid Summer Regatta. The event went off without a hitch with competitors and spectators treated to a beautiful setting, beautiful weather and hospitality of one of the oldest rowing clubs in the country. Lee Rowing Club is celebrating 160 years this week and last weekend’s regatta was one of the highlights of the clubs celebratory year. As I write I am looking forward to heading to Sherkin Island tomorrow (Wednesday) with the Douglas Young at Heart Group. Sherkin is a jewel in the crown of Cork’s beautiful coast and one of my favourite places to visit – if you haven’t been, I’d strongly recommend you put it on your to do list. Walks, beaches, good food and hospitality, what more could you ask for? Slán George Thompson Editor.

Recession! Recession! Dear Editor, Re Lord Mayor’s brainstorming banning word recession for a day. Old Irish Proverb says “Easy to laugh when you are winning!” Daragh Murphy on pig’s back wearing out dance floors and feasting at tax payer’s expense. Meanwhile, children giving best years of their lives caring for sick parents; Mary Harney cutting hours of home-help workers. We the real people of Leeside say to hell with position of Lord Mayor, pandering to relic of British Colonialism, ditto with Presidency to boot! President plus hubby touring world at our expense, and paid more than U.S. Barack Obama. Let’s vote Cowen and cronies out and ditto to next crowd who let plain people of Eire down. The N28 Cork-Ringskiddy upgrade and the N25 flyovers at the Bandon Road and Sarsfield Road roundabouts could be put at risk if the Government proceed with cutting funding to road and rail projects. Just last week Cork Chamber launched an economic assessment which concluded the N28 upgrade deserved priority status because of the economic benefits and increased connectivity it would provide for the Cork region. Cork Chamber considers the N28 to be a vital piece of strategic infrastructure and that upgrading the road could realise a net economic return of €135 million, provide 800 jobs during construction and relieve commuter traffic congestion. Despite the Cork Chamber Report the N28 upgrade has appeared in a list of projects that are expected to be suspended by the Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey TD when funding for such projects is not provided to the National Roads Authority. The proposed N25 flyovers at the Bandon Road and Sarsfield Road roundabouts also put at risk. The NRA has confirmed to me that the flyover projects are “subject to funding being made available” and any Government decision to cut funding to road projects may have a negative impact on this status. The success of the Kinsale Road flyover in reducing traffic congestion and improving safety was to act as a template for the two remaining flyovers on the N25 and construction was hoped to start later this year or early next year. Until a full commitment from the NRA and the Department of Transport to guarantee these projects is given a question mark will remain over them. Recently released figures revealed that the number of people unemployed in Cork has more than doubled in the last two years from 21,762 in June 2008 to 46,114 in June 2010. At a time when job creation is the greatest challenge that we face projects such as the N28 upgrade and N25 flyovers which would have positive economic, competitive and employment benefits for the entire Cork region need to be given the priority they deserve.

This Little Green Army In the summer of 2002, the Mighty Green Army headed East to Japan and Korea for the World Cup. My husband, our three sons, aged 8, 4 and 2, and I decided to join them. Hubbie planned it all, from the booking of the hotels, flights, trains, a visit to Disneyland and the cultural stuff like temples and whatnot. Japan is an amazing country but it is hideously expensive. As one guidebook put it, it is a place where you will feel truly impoverished. Booking the hotels was very tricky. All the other bookings had gone smoothly enough but our attempts to reserve a hotel kept getting refused and so in the end, my husband had to ring Fusae, a Japanese friend to help us out. Fusae did the necessary and booked us the hotel in Niigatta without any problems. However, when this little green army rocked up to the hotel at 9pm, the night before the Cameroon game, we were met with blank looks and panic. Before we even stepped over the threshold, the manager immediately waved us away and said, “No Room.” We smiled, pressed on and reassured him that we had a booking. He shook his head vigourously and repeated “No Room” Standing before the reception desk, we could see the hotel log book open and our surname written there but he remained resolute. Hubbie got on the phone to Fusae. Fusae talked to the manager and it all ended well as a few minutes later, we were handed our room key and shown the lift. At all times, in keeping with the Asian tradition of ‘Face’, the negotiations were kept low key, polite and unheated. Once inside the hotel room, the kids honed in on the TV. My eight yearold picked up an A4 sized laminated card lying next to the TV which listed all the channels. We were a bit taken aback when we saw the selection.

Beside 17 of the channels listed, there was a photograph featuring buxom, doe-eyed, nymphs which, even with our non-existent grasp of the Japanese language, did not prevent us from understanding what was on offer. We managed to sidetrack the porno and settled down to watch Germany annihilate Saudi Arabia 8-0. The World Cup match tickets were allocated so that only four could be purchased per booking. I had no ticket for the Cameroon game but we were able to purchase a fifth ticket from a man from Clonmel whose friend hadn’t shown up. Great! It meant, however, that my husband and the three boys were in the West Stand while I was in the East Stand on my own. I needn’t have worried. Before the game started, Angela, from Ballymun, sitting on my right introduced herself and so did the rest of the crowd around us. There was Kevin from Dublin, Michael and Kathleen from Meath, and others from all parts of Ireland. When I was obliged to return in kind and proffer my county, I got the immediate retort, “And do you have Roy Keane in your pocket?” Our two year-old slept through most of the Cameroon game. He was rudely wakened when Matt Holland scored the equaliser and he got drowned in spilt beer. His angry protestations went unheard as the wave of euphoria swept through the stadium. The relief was palpable; Ireland might survive in the World Cup without Roy Keane after all. Japan has a reputation for being a very polite country but it was taken to new heights when on leaving the stadium, the stewards and other staff lined the exits and bowing to us with joined hands, said “Arigato, thank you for coming.” It was humbling to witness and it made me feel as if I had just attended a ballet recital rather

than a potential hooligan fest. The train to the Germany game was a slow, lumbering affair. Instead of the infamous high speed bullet train, we had to take the bog standard commuter train which stopped at every hamlet and mouse hole on the way. The train was packed with Irish fans, along with a flute, a couple of badhrains, a banjo and two Japanese businessmen. Despite being made to stand the whole way home, the businessmen were good humoured and seemed amused by the spectacle. Initially the mood was high but after an hour and a half of being squashed in a stuffy train, even the most exuberant fans became sombre. We had managed to get two seats to share between the five of us which we gave over to the children. Near to the end of the journey, our two-year old lost the plot completely and proceeded to have a meltdown. I tried all my usual methods to soothe him but when I could no longer contain his flailing limbs or shut him up; I eased him down to the floor where he lay on his back and continued to thrash out his frustrations. Apart from the racket he was making, there was now a depressed silence in the carriage. Then one of the businessmen nudged his friend and pointing to our, by now, hysterical son, said, “Roy Keane?” The Irish would make a song out of anything. To the tune of Ooh Ah Paul McGrath, we sang Ooh Ah Konnichiawa, the Japanese word for Hello, as we swarmed out of the station towards Ibaraki Stadium to watch Ireland v Germany. The Germany game started at 8pm and even though it was June, it was quite cold. We came unprepared for

this and when my four year started to moan about how ‘freezing’ he was, I let him snuggle under my shirt where he fell asleep for the duration of the game. When the irrepressible Robbie Keane scored the equaliser past the mighty Oliver Kahn, I was rooted to the spot like an enormous, green frog. Around us, thousands of Irish fans went berserk. The atmosphere was that of pure, indescribable joy as we were hugged and kissed each other and the lads in the row in front of us took our photo. The mood was still ecstatic leaving the stadium. A Dublin man in his fifties rushed up to my eldest son, fell to his knees before him and pleaded, “Do you realise that you witnessed an historic moment - Ireland scored a goal against Germany in the dying seconds of the World Cup!” I don’t think my son understood what the man said but he quickly nodded in agreement. Back to the train station. Despite the hordes, the fans entered the station in an orderly fashion. We lined up dutifully at the painted lines on the platform and as each train filled up and pulled out, we shuttled forward and patiently awaited our turn. However, when our train pulled in, the driver overshot the platform which resulted in the doors missing their allocated spot by six inches. There was a mad scramble to get on the train. We clung tightly to the children and feared that we would be knocked over when suddenly a sharp Dublin accent rang out “Lads, there are children here!” Everybody froze in mid action, the crowd shuffled apart and we were ushered onto the train with murmurs of “There you go, love,” and “Mind your step.”

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn

What a poem says is of primary importance. A poem makes a statement or a declaration; it expresses a feeling or a mood; it relates a story or conveys an idea. These, constitute meaning in poetry. But a poem is more than a statement, a declaration, a feeling, a mood, a story or an idea. If that were all, prose would be enough. A poem is itself; it is an act of magic, an imaginative creation. No one can analyse its magic fully. One thing we can say, however: a poem is made up of words. Words have not only meaning, but also form and sound. Anita Daly of the Ballinlough Writers Group in Ballinlough, Cork, Ireland has given us this week’s image creating poem. We’ll never look at a mouse in the same light again. Dealing with a Mouse (Ecologically) you helped me hang the curtain while I tell you uncertainly I have a mouse not just me but both of us are nervous now you spread everything I have under the sink in the cleaning cupbard milton and dettol, wipe everywhere with a frisson showing your nerve. Gov. Must Tackle Electricity Increases The news that electricity prices are to increase is deeply disappointing. Because oil and gas prices have gone down, a public service obligation of €195m is to be reintroduced. This is bad news for consumers, and requires an effective response from the government. 1. Minister Ryan must act immediately to ensure that any burden is distributed fairly among customers. The current proposal is that all customers, regardless of their financial circumstances will be subject to the same annual increase in charges of €42, which is completely unfair, and puts an onerous burden on poor households.

Each class in the school was allocated a garden area to grow fruit and vegetables. Their progress will be documented as part of the Douglas entry in the National Tidy Towns competition.

Department of education approves purchase of site in Carrigaline for education campus development Local Fianna Fáil T.D. Michael McGrath has welcomed the approval by the Tánaiste & Minister for Education & Skills Mary Coughlan T.D. of the purchase of a site in Carrigaline by County Cork VEC for the development of an education campus in the town comprising three schools. The Department’s intention is to develop a new Gaelcholáiste on the site, and also to re-locate the existing Gaelscoil Carrigaline and Sonas Junior Special School to the campus, according to Deputy McGrath. ‘A local voluntary committee has been working closely with Cork County VEC for some time on the proposed development of a Gaelcholáiste in Carrigaline. The approval by the Department of the purchase of this site is major step forward towards the development of a Gaelcholáiste in Carrigaline.

Michael

McGrath T.D.

‘In addition, the plan is, subject to the approval of both schools, to relocate the Gaelscoil Carrigaline and the Sonas Junior Special School to the new campus development. The purchase of this site is a significant investment in the education infrastructure of Carrigaline. ‘Obviously, the local community will have to be fully consulted of the proposed development. It is important now that a detailed plan, including a timeline, for the development of this campus is prepared and made available for all stakeholders to consider.

On a Personal Note.......... Last week I was saddened by the death of Dr. Paddy (Podge) Brett. I knew him for many years, as we grew up in the same Park, later when I was working in Douglas, Dr. Brett set up his G.P. practice there, at that time they weren't many doctors in Douglas. I was one of his first patients, as were all my family down through the years. I could never forget his kindness to all of us & and my children, it only took a phone call to have 'Podge' at our door. May he rest in peace.

New Slipway at Lee Rowing Club. At last week’s Council meeting, the City Manager brought a report before us regarding the slipway at Lee Rowing Club. The slipway has separated from the quay wall and has become dangerous. It is proposed to replace it with a pontoon similar to the one recently installed in Custom House Docks. City Council agreed to meet the cost which will be in the region of €170,000 including consulting fees. It is planned to have the new pontoon in place by the end of August. The pontoon will be owned by the City Council and made available by way of licence to the Lee Rowing Club and be managed by them for their own use and for use by other members of the general public. I am delighted with the City Manager’s announcement of such a sizeable investment in a new pontoon on the Blackrock Marina. The slip-way fronting the Lee Rowing Club on the Marina has shown signs of lateral movement over a period of years. It is an issue that I have been lobbying in City Hall for since I joined Council three years ago and I am delighted that it has come to fruition. This investment of €170,000 is something that will be enjoyed by the all the recreational users of the river – under the terms of the licence Lee

Tennis elbow Tennis elbow is one of several overuse injuries that can affect your elbow. As you might assume, playing tennis is one cause of tennis elbow — but many other common activities can cause tennis elbow. The pain of tennis elbow occurs primarily where the tendons of your forearm muscles attach to the bony prominence on the outside of your elbow. Pain can also spread into your forearm and wrist. The pain of tennis elbow doesn't have to keep you from enjoying your favorite activities. Rest and overthe-counter pain relievers often help. Rarely, surgery is needed.

Symptoms Tennis elbow symptoms may include: Pain that radiates from the outside of your elbow into your forearm and wrist

Pain when you extend your wrist Forearm weakness Pain that gets worse over weeks or months A painful grip during certain activities, such as shaking hands or turning a doorknob An inability to hold certain objects, such as a coffee cup

Causes Tennis elbow is an overuse injury. The cause is repeated contraction of the forearm muscles that you use to straighten and raise your hand and wrist. The repeated motions and stress to the tissue may result in inflammation or a series of tiny tears in the tendons that attach the forearm muscles to the bone at the outside of your elbow. As the name tennis elbow indicates, playing tennis — particularly, repeated use of the backhand stroke with poor technique — is one possible cause of the condition. However, many other common arm motions, including using plumbing tools,

Treatments and drugs If the pain isn't interfering with your ability to function, you can take a wait-and-see approach to tennis elbow treatment. Tennis elbow often gets better on its own in six months to two years. If you're in too much pain or if the pain is affecting your function, initial treatment of tennis elbow usually involves self-care steps including rest, icing the area and use over-the-counter anti-

More new cars sold already this year. The latest statistics from the Motorcheck.ie Car Index show that while new car registrations for 2010 have surged past the total figure registered in 2009, the number of second hand cars being imported into the country continues to decline. According to Motorcheck.ie, there have been 60,218 passenger vehicles registered in Ireland between January 1st and May 31st, 2010. That's up 53% YTD against 39,435 passenger vehicles registered for the same period in 2009 (Jan-May). In total there were only 55,578 passenger vehicles registered for the entire year in 2009. In direct contrast to new car registrations, the figure for second hand vehicles registered in Ireland for the first time continues to decline. The number of imported cars registered in Ireland for 2010 stands at 18,886, that's 27% down on the 2009 figure of 25,970. Commenting on the latest figures, Motorcheck.ie Director Shane Teskey said "The increase in new car registrations continues to be a source of comfort for the beleaguered Irish motor industy. It's clear that the Government scrappage scheme continues to stimulate interest in the domestic new car sector." However in terms of the return to the exchequer, a reduction in used imports is not good news. "In the first five months of last year, 66% of the total number of vehicles registered for the first time on Irish roads (and therefore liable for VRT) were used cars coming in from abroad. Today that figure has dropped to 31% and may account for recent proposals to crack down on vehicles whose owners are evading VRT". Registrations for Commercial Vehicles and HGV's are also ahead of last year with 11,298 recorded for 2010 against 8,267 in total for 2009. However the Motorcheck.ie statistics show that despite an average increase of 50% for February, March and April, Commercial registrations in May dropped back 1,031 - just 4% above the total of 984 recorded for May 2009. Sales of Motorcycles continue to drop (down 33.5%) with just 693 registrations recorded for 2010 against the 2009 figure of 1,042 for the same period

‘La Fête Nationale’ sa Fhrainc – Ábhair Machnaimh dúinn féin? Tá tábhacht nach mór le lá náisiúnta ag tír – mar a bheidh sa Fhrainc an tseachtain seo chugainn (14ú Iúil), nuair a bheidh ‘le quatorze juillet’ or ‘La Fête Nationale’, nó mar a thugtar air i mBéarla ‘Bastille Day’, acu. Gan amhras, ‘sé Lá ‘le Pádraig’ nó Márta 17ú, ár lá náisiúnta agus baineann sé le ceiliúradh eaglasta is naomh, seachas le bunú an Stáit nó aimsiú saoirse na tíre tar éis tamall faoi údarás tír iasachta éigin. Ceiliúrann ‘La Fête Nationale’ féile cónascadh 1790, nuair a tharla ionsaí ar dhún-phríosúin an Bastille, cothrom an ama an bliain roimhe sin, agus a bhí feicthe mar thús éirí amach an náisiúin nua, agus mar thús ar athmhuintearas na bhFrancach a bhunú laistigh den monarcacht bunreachtúla, a bhí ann roimh don gcéad Poblacht le linn Réabhlóid na Fraince. Is fiú cuairt a thabhairt ar Pháras mar go mbíonn ceiliúradh den scoth ann ar Champs-Elysées (príomh shráid na cathrach ársa sin), agus díreach os comhair Uachtarán na Poblachta. Ba mhúinteoir Fraincise mo bhean tráth agus í mar rúnaí ar Chumann Múinteoirí na Fraincise, agus thabharfadh ambasáid na Fraince cuireadh do choiste an chumainn freastal ar a gceiliúradh úd. Gach bliain thionólfadh siad féasta agus cóisir den scoth i gcúl ghairdín an Ambasáid i mBaile Átha Cliath agus thagadh lucht gnó, acadaimh, léann, tionscail, stáit is polaitíochta chun freastal ar na searmanais. Bhíomar ann cúpla uair agus ar gach ócáid bhí an aimsir chomh hálainn sin gur chuir an aimsir breá go mór leis an bhfáilte fial is flaithiúil a chuir na Francach roimh a gcuairteoirí. Théadh baill éagsúla an chumainn múinteora air agus bhíodh baill de na h-ambasáid eile ann chomh maith le baill den ár Roinn Ghnóthaí Eachtracha féin. Díreach mar atá clú agus cáil ar Éire de bharr na paráid ar Lá ‘le Pádraig tá aithne domhanda ar an bhFrainc de bharr an ceiliúradh náisiúnta seo de bhunú Stáit na Fraince – agus dar liom ach tá an dá rud anthábhachtach! Cé go bhfuil ár lá náisiúnta againn i mí Márta, agus ceiliúraimid ár bpríomh naomh seachas bunú an Stáit mar atá againn inniu, an bhfuil an t-am tagtha anois chun bunú an Stáit go hoifigiúil, ó 1939, chomh maith le 1916, a ceiliúradh i gceart mar ócáid mór idirnáisiúnta agus ár mbunreacht is ár bpoblacht a chur os comhair an domhain mar éacht den scoth – agus bolscaireacht idirnáisiúnta a dhéanamh ar mhaithe le cúrsaí gnó, an tionsclaíocht, léann is oideachais, agus an córas polaitíochta agus stáit atá forbartha againn le breis is 70 blian anuas? Ábhair machnaimh b’fhéidir?

In The Loop with Peter Bowles

Congratulations to Sean Healy and Damien Mullins who won last weeks Live At The Marquee competition to see Snoop Dog. Last week saw Christy Moore, Snoop Dog and Dara O Briain entertain the Cork crowd at the marquee. Dara played two sell out gigs, one of which I attended. The man is a comic genius to be fair, he spends the first half of his show talking to members of the audience, thus proving his act isn’t in the most part scripted, a rare trait these days. He went on in the second half to take the mick out of random things like gaming and that but often referred back to the members of the audience whom he had spoke with in the first half. Snoop Dog took to the stage last Monday after a two hour delay due to flight delays. He played for little over an hour, performing mostly classics like “Whats My Name” and “Aint Nothing But A G Thing Baby”. He also played a cover of House of Pain’s monster hit “Jump Around”. He left the

crowd by telling them he would love to return to Cork for another gig. Lots more happening this weekend with Tony Bennett playing the Marquee tonight and Madness closing the run of gigs tomorrow night in style no doubt, you also have the Cork Clipper festival in Alberts Quay which runs for tonight and tomorrow night. Oxegen also takes place this weekend with headline acts such as Jay – Z, Arcade Fire, Muse, Florence and the Machine, Coronas, Fatboy Slim, Black Eyed Peas, Groove Armada, Calvin Harris, Eminem, Faithless, Prodigy, Hot Chip, David Guetta, Armand Van Helden and Steve Angello. A serious line up this year bursting at the seems with the top acts!! Oxegen isn’t the only major national festival as we know, Electic Picnic is also happening late July Early August. Some of the acts include LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip and Laurent Garnier. We’ll have more on this festival closer to the event.

Don’t forget Cork Week kicks off on Monday with Live music each night, this year the event has been scaled down but is sure to entertain none the less. It will see Crosshaven turned into a festival village as over 200 sailing crews compete and party in one of Europe’s biggest sailing weeks. Some light hearted news now and Welsh crooner Tom Jones is set to release his new album 'Praise and Blame' on July 23rd. Now, just weeks before the release, an email from Island Records vice president David Sharpe, in which he slates the album, has (most likely purposely) leaked onto the internet. An extract from the email reads as follows: "Imagine my surprise when I

walked into the office this morning to hear hymns coming from your office - it could have been Sunday morning. "My initial pleasure came to an abrupt halt when I realised that Tom Jones was singing the hymns! I have just listened to the album in its entirety and want to know if this is some sick joke? "We did not invest a fortune in an established artist for him to deliver 12 tracks from the common book of prayer. Having lured him from EMI, the deal was that you would deliver a record of upbeat tracks along the lines of 'Sex Bomb' and 'Mama Told Me'." Things don’t always run smoothly eh?...

DOUGLAS GAA Bright future for Douglas football: Last weekend the Douglas under 14 footballers represented Cork at the finals of the all-Ireland Féile Peil competition in Co. Derry. This was the third time in four years that Douglas had qualified as the Cork champions. Douglas won each of their three group matches to qualify for a semi-final where Simonstown Gaels of Co. Meath provided the opposition. After a brilliant display Douglas won by 4-04 to 0-02. Douglas fell at the final hurdle to Na Fianna of Dublin but did enough to demonstrate that the future is bright for football in Douglas. The Hurling & Football committee extend congratulations to the players, mentors, parents and supporters who travelled to Derry last weekend and represented both Douglas and Cork with pride and distinction.

Results: Senior Hurling League: Douglas 1-13 St. Finbarr’s 1-12 Junior “B” Football League: Douglas 1-09 Lough Rovers 2-09 Fixture: Thursday 8th July Senior Hurling League Douglas v. Bride Rovers (7.30pm in Rathcormac) Saturday 10th July Senior Camogie Championship Douglas v. Ballygarvan (6.00pm in Cloughduv) Club Bar: Situated in the heart of Douglas village, the club bar is the ideal venue to watch all major sporting events or to enjoy a quiet drink with friends. Familiar and new faces are always welcome and there is no shortage of entertainment with music provided on Friday and Sunday nights.

G.A.A. FOCUS Snippets from the Local and National Scene By Pat Harrington Carlow Recently I paid a visit to Carlow on the occasion of their annual under 16 hurling tournament. Three teams travelled from Cork for the event, they being Douglas, Blackrock and Mallow. In the Douglas group there were teams from Dublin, Limerick and Tipperary. Each team played four games. I am continuously giving out about the 50 (plus) year-old, grey-haired umpires. Well in Carlow it was my turn to stand beside the post. The ball dropped into the Douglas goalmouth and I signaled a goal. The Douglas players were adamant it went over the bar for a point – a goal was given and the match ended in a draw. I draw solace from this incident through the failure of five officials in the England vs. Germany World Cup game to see that the ball was well over the goalline for an England goal – enough said about that. The Carlow tournament was extremely wellorganised by the local officials and the event was very well run off with the minimum of

hassle. I’m happy to say that the Douglas team gave an excellent account of themselves and were very competitive in all four games. Me, a Tipster? As a tipster the bookies would welcome me with open arms; such has been my attempts at forecasting. In football I tipped Armagh in Ulster, Cork in Munster and Dublin in Leinster – all fell by the wayside. I also tipped Tipperary

Southwestern Group Fun Day at Brinny. After a very successful grasstrack weekend two weeks ago in Carrigtwohill, the Southwestern Group move to Brinny this Sunday the 11th. This time out it’s a motocross fun day and practice and all are welcome. Venue signposted from the Halfway roundabout.further details on www.southwesternmx.com. for the Munster hurling title. Perhaps I’m not as knowledgeable as I claim to be. Refereeing The referee in the Dublin vs. Meath encounter made some very basic mistakes that cost the Dubs dearly. In three of the Meath goals blatant fouls were committed; in one case the ball was fouled (changed hands) and in two other goals fouls were committed on opposing players. That said Meath were by far the better team and displayed excellent finishing. Dublin were very naïve and their defending was awful. In football terms it would appear that they have slipped way down the pecking order. At the beginning of the season Dublin played Tyrone type football – so many extra bodies behind the ball but management decided to abandon these tactics after defeating Wexford. Meath have some excellent forwards in Davy Bray, Ward, O’Rourke and Sheridan though their defence is suspect. On their performance against Dublin they will pose a big threat. Louth, appearing in their first Leinster final since 1960 will be the opposition. For the record Louth defeated Cork in 1957 to win the all-Ireland title. Micko Is it the end of the road for Micko Dwyer following the defeat of Wicklow? As a player Micko played at wing back and corner forward. He came to prominence as a manager in 1975 when he guided Kerry to all-Ireland success; in fact he led them to eight all-Ireland victories. He had success with Kildare in two Leinster championships and later managed Laois and Wicklow. He certainly will be missed and a great loss to the game if he decides to put his feet up. More next week, Pat.
