Congratulations to Paddy and Geoff I was at City Hall for a reception honouring members of the New York Cork Association celebrating its 125th year last Friday where I caught up with friends Paddy McCarthy who was awarded Corkman of the Year together with Geoff O’Sullivan at a banquet the following evening at the Rochestown Park Hotel. I wrote for the Irish Examiner USA a number of years ago, not long after it was set up by Paddy McCarthy who’s also responsible for Irish Connections Magazine while Ronnie here at The Post still writes a poetry column for the New York based publication. Another good friend of ours from far afield , Mike Bowen who also writes for The Irish Examiner USA, travelled from his base in Melbourne for the celebrations. I would like to add our congratulations from all at The Douglas Post to Paddy and Geoff and to the New York Cork Association on the great work they do.

Destruction of our heritage I read with a degree of sadness and anger at the destruction of a number of ring forts in county Cork recently. These sites are part of our heritage and folklore, indeed they are very much part of our history and should be protected. On the same subject, the house at Vernon Mount seems to be falling more and more into a state of disrepair and though a protected building, if it becomes dangerous, then it may have to be knocked for safety reasons. If this is the case then we lose another piece of history. Munster 100 returns and Douglas Post Motorcycling begins Next week the Munster 100 Motorcycle Road races will once again take place after an 18 year absence and at a new circuit, part of which takes in the town of Dunmanway. I covered the last three runnings of the Munster 100 when Clonakilty was its home and the craic and friendship was just mighty. Road Racing is the most thrilling form of motorcycle racing and I would urge anyone and everyone to go and experience it. There are many attractions to attend over the weekend of the 21st and 22nd of August to coincide with the races and promises to be a great family event. All motorsport is dangerous and I would all attending to exercise extreme awareness and obey the marshals. To coincide with this event The Douglas Post this week begins a new section on motorcycling. Appearing every month, this new section will touch on all aspects of motorcycling from product reviews to bike tests, while featuring new and reports covering classic bikes, touring, tips as well as sports news and titbits.

Ring-forts are oval or circular fortified settlements or farmsteads that were built mostly during the Early Christian and Iron Age periods. Fake Credit Union Website Dear Editor I received this "phishing" email from billing@creditunion.ie in my personal email account alleging to be from the Irish League of Credit Unions. This is a very dangerous email which could easily catch someone unawares due to its genuine look. The link contained in the email takes you to a site which is, at first glance, identical to the actual Credit Union website. The fraudulent website looks for the persons passport number and expiration date. I would urge anyone who receives this email to delete it straight away and never to give personal details to anyone who contacts you via email or telephone claiming to be from a financial institution. I will be contacting the Irish League Credit Union to ensure they follow up with An Garda Siochana. Yours truly, Cllr David O'Byrne (Passage West Town Council, Labour Party)
Irish Coursing Club Dear Editor, A recent suggestion by Irish Coursing Club CEO, DJ Histon that "all captured hares" are returned to the wild following their ordeal in captivity is false. The hares that died from their injuries in Gorey last season certainly didn't make it back to the wild. Neither did the hares found dead in a coursing enclosure in Borrisoleigh, nor hares at Rathcormac that were hit so hard that they had to be put down. Some of the hares caught for the Loughrea/ Westport meeting would never see the open countryside again either -
one was euthanised after being struck by greyhounds, two others were found dead in a paddock (one having succumbed to pneumonia) while another died during transportation. Hare deaths were also recorded at coursing events in Galway & Oranmore, Castleisland, Kilflynn, Lixnaw, Listowel, Millstreet, Templetuohy, Abbeydorney and Ballyheigue. Among the terrorised hares that did make it back to the wild were three injured at a meeting in County Cork. According to the wildlife ranger present, one of these unfortunate creatures had a "damaged leg" that "could be broken". Mr Histon claims that regulations and conditions attached to the licence issued by Minister John Gormley were "written with the welfare of the hare in mind". Tell that to the hare with the dislocated hip that was destroyed by a vet at the Ardpatrick & Kilfinane coursing meeting. Or to the hares that died "from knocks sustained during coursing" at Thurles. Or to the injured hare found with "marks on its back". Coursing is now banned in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. A majority want it outlawed here too. The National Parks and Wildlife Service has recently restated that the status of the hare is "poor", partly due to persecution by hunters. The time couldn't be better for Minister Gormley to grant permanent protection to this precious species and call a halt to coursing cruelty. Yours sincerely, Philip Kiernan Irish Council Against Blood Sports PO Box 88, Mullingar, Co Westmeath 044-93 49848 OR 086 2636265 info@banbloodsports.com

Child development checks are essential AS PARENTS our concern and worry for our children never goes away regardless of their age. When you are a new parent, or that of a young infant, your concerns are even further heightened because the little ones can only communicate with you through tears if there is some up. This is why reassurances through the routine child development checks and the public health nurses are essential. They not only ensure that your new bundle of job is growing and developing as they should be but it lets parents know that everything is ok. In recent weeks I questioned the Minister for Health about concerns I had about the future viability of these checks and whether the reallocation of staff within the HSE would affect them. My question was reverted directly to the HSE who told me: “very effort will be made to ensure that these will not be adversely affected as a result of HSE staff being reassigned to other critical front line services.” This is simply not good enough. These services are frontline in their own right and any change in structure that will affect these checks will have serious implications for everyone in the future, not just parents and children but for national services such as health and education as well. Already we have significant issues to deal with regarding the protection and care of children, and infants, in this country and I feel that if these services fall through the cracks, we will be paying for it in the long term. Children are a family’s priority, there is no reason why the same should not apply for the country.

A New Home for Pippa the Cairn Terrier Deirdre from ‘Paws for Thought -the complete dog grooming service’ at St Patrick’s Mills in Douglas (083-384-9146) spoke with the Douglas Post this last week to reveal a truly shaggy dog story with a happy ending. Says Deirdre, “My neighbour Marlene was out walking when she came across this little one year old Cairn terrier starving and covered in matting so she brought her to me.” Deirdre exudes the entire personality you’d expect of the term ‘dog friendly’ and such is her commitment to the welfare of those four legged friends in her care that it comes as no surprise to see the transformation in the little dog who’s now been renamed Pippa (pictured). Deirdre continues, “This little dog was in terrible condition and also ravenous. As I removed filth from her fur it became obvious that there was a very cute little dog underneath and though she’s small, food doesn’t linger any time.” During the time Pippa’s been at Deirdre’s home her personality -as can be imagined for a terrier- has become more

confident. “She’s a cocky little creature and it’s in her nature to boss other dogs around so the home she’s going to is ideal.” Explains Deirdre, “When Catherine and Pippa met they made a connection and that was the first time that Catherine had taken an interest in a dog since losing her furry friend last year.” Undoubtedly, Catherine and Pippa will sustain each other brilliantly.

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn
Our poem this week is dedicated to the memory of Michael Crowley. Michael was a friend and an icon to everybody in the music business. Musicians from all over Ireland, and indeed from many other countries, were regular visitors to the well known Crowley Music Store in MacCurtain Street. They all came away feeling a little better for having met and spoken to Michael. He understood the music business and the trials and tribulations of musicians. Every band knew Michael; he sold Joe Mac his first drum kit and Rory Gallagher his first guitar, the list is endless We all miss him, May he Rest in Peace. We’ll Miss You We’ll miss you in the Springtime, When daffodils are new, And hearts reveal, the way they feel, Then we’ll be missing you. We’ll miss you in the summer, When blossoms pave the way, No joy will bless our emptiness, We’ll miss you everyday. We’ll miss you in the Autumn, When leaves begin to fall, As fireside nights bring us delights We’ll miss you most of all. We’ll miss you in the Winter, When Christmas time is nigh, You’ll be there in that somewhere, ’Tween nowhere and goodbye. Through the tapestries of time, We’ll miss what might have been, And in the night when all is quiet, We’ll miss you in our dreams. © Ronnie McGinn Send your poem to ‘The Poetry Corner’ / Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas or you can email it direct to ronniemcginn@ eircom.net. If possible keep your poem to 20 lines. You may choose any subject you like, in any form you like as long as it’s original. We look forward to hearing from you. RonnieMcGinn

Brainteazer Last Week’s Teazers. “A hiker came to a fork in the road and does not know the way to go to his destination. There are two men at the fork, one of whom always tells the truth while the other always tells lies. The hiker does not know which is which, though; he may ask one of the men only one question to find his way. Which man does he ask and what is the question?
Last Weeks
Last Week’s Answer. Either man should be asked the following question: ‘If I were to ask you if this is the way to go, would you say yes?’ While asking, the hiker should be pointing at either of the directions going from the fork. Its not difficult to figure out that the answer would be no from both men if it’s the wrong direction, and yes if it’s the right direction. This Week’s Teazer. The parish clerk of a West Cork town received a small parcel from Germany addressed to Mr. Alfred White, she checked the telephone directory but could find no one listed under that name. However, when she inquired at the local pub she was told by some of the town’s old timers that there had been an Alfred White and that after World War 2 , he had married a German and settled in Frankfurt. What was in the parcel ?

DOUGLAS TIDY TOWNS SUMMER UPDATE At this time of the year with many people on holiday in Douglas – in our 3 Hotels, our many B. & Bs., or with family – we look at Douglas and try and see what our visitors might see. Douglas has a wonderful community, a village much of it still retained but expanded into surrounding areas and the village hugely changed with the Shopping Centres, the
new relief road and the many improvements to the Businesses in East and West Villages. The Picnic in the Park and the wonderful support we got from the Community (and beyond) was inspiring and puts a spring in our step when we go about our cleaning/tidying/sweeping/ planting and weeding. As a Tidy Towns group we look on Douglas with pride. We look at the facilities we have – the Community Park - and we must give credit to the hard-working founders – the Playground (with great help from Cork County Council), the walking/jogging path in the Park, Douglas Woods (the Mangla) which is ideal for a leisurely (but fairly invigorating) walk. The Fingerpost Roundabout is still a jewel and our group worked very hard on this to keep it to a high standard. We cleaned and weeded it repeatedly and removed debris and had to do more this year because of the dreaded “council cutbacks”. However we keep going.

and co-ordinate individuals who have expressed an interest in getting involved in having this important historical cemetery cleaned up. Over the past number of weeks a lot of attention has been focussed on the lack of maintenance being carried out at the landmark city graveyard because of a reduction in the number of groundsmen arising from the recruitment embargo imposed on local authorities by central government. Families of deceased have been in contact with public representatives from across the city expressing their disappointment and hurt at the present condition of the graveyard. We decided that the time for discussion had moved to a time for action. The aims of the public meeting were to: listen to the concerns of the general public regarding the condition of the graveyard, facilitate communication between members of the general public, elected public representatives and City Council on this issue, facilitate the establishment of a ‘Friends of St Finbarr’s Cemetery’ association, to co-ordinate an immediate volunteer lead clean up of the cemetery, to call for an increase in the number of staff allocated to the graveyard at the earliest possible opportunity. A working group has now been established, that held its first committee meeting this week.

NOMINATE CORK CARERS FOR CARERS OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2010 I was delighted recently to receive correspondence from the Carers Association about the Carers of the Year Awards 2010. These awards present an ideal opportunity to recognise the selfless dedication of carers in Cork and throughout the country. Every one of us will personally know of carers who sacrifice so much to care for a loved one. The annual awards ceremony can only reward a small number of carers, but the awards give recognition to the invaluable work carried out by thousands of carers in Cork and around the county. I believe it is appropriate that a Young Carer of the Year is also chosen as part of the event. I would encourage anyone who has been touched by the work of carers to consider submitting a nomination to the Carers of the Year Awards 2010. The 2010 awards are being sponsored by Emergency Response Ltd. The closing date for receipt of nominations is Friday, 10th September 2010. The prizes include a cash prize, commemorative award, weekend break in Ireland and a laptop computer. Sunburn You know sunburn when it happens: red, painful skin that feels hot to the touch. Sunburn usually appears within a few hours after sun exposure and may take from several days to several weeks to fade. Intense sun exposure that results in sunburn increases your risk of certain complications and related skin diseases. These include dry, wrinkled skin; liver spots; actinic keratoses; and skin cancer, including melanoma.
Symptoms Signs and symptoms of sunburn include: Pinkness or redness Skin that feels warm or hot to the touch Pain or tenderness Swelling Small fluid-filled blisters, which may break
Headache, fever and fatigue if sunburn covers a large area
Causes Sunburns are caused by exposure to too much ultraviolet (UV) light. UV radiation is a wavelength of sunlight in a range too short for the human eye to see. UV light is divided into three wavelength bands — ultraviolet A (UVA), ultraviolet B (UVB) and ultraviolet C (UVC). Only UVA and UVB rays reach the earth.
Treatments and drugs Sunburn treatment doesn't heal your skin or prevent damage to your skin, but it can reduce pain, swelling and discomfort. You may find home remedies helpful. These include taking a nonprescription anti-inflammatory medication, applying a cool compress and applying an aloe vera lotion. Sunburn typically resolves on
its own within several days, depending on the severity of the burn.
Lifestyle remedies Once sunburn occurs, you can't do much to limit damage to your skin. However, the following tips may reduce your pain and discomfort in the hours and days following sunburn: Take anti-inflammatory medication, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, on a regular basis according to the label instructions until redness and soreness subside. Use caution when giving aspirin to children or teenagers. Apply cold compresses — such as a towel dampened with cool tap water — to the affected skin. Or take a cool bath or shower. Apply a moisturizing cream, aloe vera lotion or hydrocortisone cream to affected skin. A lowdose (0.5 percent to 1 percent) hydrocortisone cream may decrease pain and swelling, and
speed up healing. If blisters form, don't break them. They contain your natural body fluid (serum) and are a protective layer. Also, breaking blisters slows the healing process and increases the risk of infection. If needed, lightly cover blisters with gauze. If blisters break on their own, apply an antibacterial cream. Drink plenty of fluids. Sun exposure and heat can cause fluid loss through your skin. Be sure to replenish those fluids to prevent dehydration — when your body doesn't have enough water and other fluids to carry out its normal functions. Treat peeling skin gently. Within a few days, the affected area may begin to peel. This is simply your body's way of getting rid of the top layer of damaged skin. While your skin is peeling, continue to use moisturizing cream. If you need more information, call Garvan at Lynch’s Pharmacy on 4366923.

Composting rhubarb leaves Many folks have been concerned about adding rhubarb leaves to their compost piles. If the leaves are poisonous, they must be bad for compost as well, since rhubarb stalks contain a high concentration of oxalic acid which slightly toxic, right? What actually occurs when rhubarb is added to a compost pile is that the oxalic acid is mostly broken down, dilluted and pH balanced rather quickly. People do not eat compost piles as a rule anyway, and even if a child were to eat compost dirt, there would be problems other than from and remaining oxalic acid from the decomposing rhubarb stalks. Experience has shown that the level of acid does not inhibit the microbial action of composting. Compost piles which were nearly all rhubarb leaves and stalks have decomposed very nicely and the compost has behaved like ordinary compost and no inhibition
of plant growth was noticed from the compost. As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.
Flower Garden Feed dahlias every fortnight to sustain flowering and build up tubers. Continue spraying roses and Michaelmas daisies with fungicide, as diseases are more likely now. Tie in new stems on climbing roses, arching them downwards to encourage flowering sideshoots
Kitchen Garden Make new strawberry beds and transplant rooted runners to new positions. Check sweetcorn regularly and gather as soon as it is ripe. Trim chives and pot up for winter use. Sow a large leafy turnip variety for winter "greens". Start covering endive with a large pot or dinner plate to blanch the
hearts in 3-4 weeks time.
Lawns & Hedges Rake lawns in the next week or two to scratch out thatch and other dead or loose material.
Greenhouse Remove a little shading from the glass as heat levels decline. Pot up spring-flowering bulbs for early colour indoors. Take conifer cuttings with a heel for rooting in a cold frame.
In General Continue taking cuttings of all tender perennials, indoors and out, as they will root well before winter. Finish repotting house - and greenhouse plants in the next 2 weeks; after that, wait until spring. Finish thinning grapes. Feed cacti for the. last time, but continue watering in warm weather. Take cuttings of scented pelargoniums in gritty compost. Start thinning vigorous marginal and bog garden growth, especially where species have
finished flowering. Spray new ground with giyphosate for maximum impact Prepare sites for new evergreens of all kinds. Check brassicas regularly for caterpillars and clusters of butterfly eggs. Finnish summer pruning all fruit. Cut out the exhausted stems of loganberries and other hybrid berries, and tie in new canes. Water and mulch runner beans and the pods ripen. DRIVING LICENCES FOR MOTORCYCLES REGULATIONS From 1 December 2007 motorcyclists on a learner permit (provisional licence) have had to wear a yellow, fourescent tabard (not a vest or jacket) with regulation sized L plates showing both back and front.. This applies to all learner permits\ provisional licences regardless of date of issue. The requirement is that a person with a learner permit (provisional licence) for category A, A1, or M, shall not drive such a vehicle unless there are displayed on a yellow fluorescent tabard worn over the person’s outside clothing, the letter ‘L’, not less than 15 centimetres high in red on a white ground in clearly visible vertical positions to the front and rear of the person’s torso. From 30 October 2007, there is a restriction in relation to making application for a driving test. From this date a person who is granted a learner permit for a vehicle in category A, A1, M, by a licensing authority and has not previously held, within the period of 5 years prior to the granting, such a permit in that category, is not entitled to make an application for a driving test within the period of 6 months from the day the permit comes into force. This provision also applies to categories W, B or EB. In order to ride a motorcycle or moped in a public place a person must hold a current driving licence or a Learner Permit in Category M, A1 or A. Note also that carrying a pillion passenger when you only have a provisional licence or learner’s permit is now a penal offence (ie; you can be imprisoned rather that just fined and
given penalty points, which can also happen!) The ‘A’ is Learner Permit from 18 years of age for motorcycles, with or without a sidecar, subject to a power limit before the Driving Test and for 2 years afterwards of 25Kw/34bhp. or a power to weight ratio of less than 0.16kW per kg) – the restriction continuing for two years after taking out a full licence in that category. However, at a cost, virtually any bike can have its power reduced to come within these limits. The Driving Test must be taken on a motorcycle over 125cc. This is the first-choice motorcycle licence. The ‘A1’ Learner Permit is available from 16 years of age, but will restrict the holder to motorcycles of 50cc to 125cc and a 11Kw/14.5bhp limit. Even if you pass the ‘125’ Driving Test, when you up-grade to a bike over 125cc you will need an ‘A’ licence provisional, a second ‘test’ on a bike over 150cc, and endure all restrictions. The ‘M’ Learner Permit is strictly for mopeds, or engine-assisted bicycles, under 50cc with a top speed of below 45kmp /28mph and is available from 16. The holders of a full ‘B’ licence, with additional insurance, can also drive mopeds.
Blackwater Motors
Note that both a Learner Permit and a provisional licence do not entitle you to carry a pillion passenger. Nor are you permitted to use motorways. Any person wishing to obtain a third or subsequent provisional licence must have undergone a driving test within the previous two years. However, a person who is due to undergo a test and whose licence is expiring may obtain a 12 month provisional licence on production of their driving test appointment letter. Application forms for the driving test are meant to be available from
the licensing authority and most Post Offices, Garda Stations and Libraries. After filing your testapplication you will receive a letter of acknowledgement with a leaflet “preparing for your driving test” and in due course an appointment for your test. Note the minimum cc.

If you are interested in tracing your ancestors go along to Douglas library on the 24th of August, you will be shown on screen how to do so in a very practical session. Also the holocaust exhibition is on display and is well worth a visit to remind us all of those terrible atrocities from the past. As this is heritage week we have a trip to Spike Island on the 17th of August at 11:00, which reminds me of our past heritage here in Douglas, some of which is “lost to the past”. I am talking about the many factories which were part of our past here in Douglas. There were many factories some going back as far as the war years. We had flour mills, corn-hemp mills, rope factory, and of course Munster carpets, St Patrick woollen mills, and Murroghs mills. It saddens me to think we preserved nothing from these factories. Murroghs made tweeds and the woollen mills made blankets which were exported all over the world. There were many machines in both factories. To name but a few there was a carding machine which the raw wool went into, then onto the mule, then spinning, weft, warp, there was the core winder, twisting machine, loom, hydro machine for the spinning of the material after it was washed. That is only a small sample of the different machines in both
mills, and to think we left it all die when they closed. If only we had the vision to look ahead and keep a loom, winder etc to show this generation and generations into the future the proud heritage Douglas can claim. We could also have kept a small space to display the looms, winder, twisting machines and I bet we would be up there with best regards with the tourists visiting to see our proud heritage on display. If there is any machines in hiding it is not too late to dust them down and put them up on display. We have plenty people here in Douglas who would be happy to recall the past to our tourists. “I live in hope”, I am sure you agree we have lost so much, no doubt many readers will let me know of the many more factories which at one time were part of life here in Douglas. The “young at heart” walking group are starting their preparation for the ladies minimarathon. Mary Boyle will take you through the programme every Monday morning at 11AM in Douglas Community Park which will also include warm up and cooling down exercises. The charity this year is the Brothers of charity who hope to raise much needed funds towards the purchase of a bus. As we are having such a nice summer we hope to see everybody out on Monday morning.

Dá Ghiorracht do Dhuine a Chóta is Giorra dó a Léine! Cheanna tá fógraí le feiceáil agus le clos ar na meáin náisiúnta is réigiúnaigh faoi stádas olc na Pacastáine agus an géar-ghá atá ann cabhrú le muintir na tíre atá gafa de bharr na holl-tuillte inti. Tá clú agus cáil orainn mar dhaoine agus mar náisiún teacht i gcabhair ar dhaoine atá faoi bhrú ó ghanntanas bhia, dídean nó ó thragóid ollmhór marfach ón nádúr mar ar tharla san India nó in Haiti le roinnt bliana anuas. Fós cabhraímid go flaithiúil leis na cumainn carthanachta a thugann déirce do mhuintir éagsúla mórthimpeall na cruinne. Ach, dá ghiorracht do dhuine a chóta is giorra dó a léine – agus taispeánadh seo go soiléir dom an lá cheanna nuair a bhuail mé le cara liom atá dall, agus go bhfuil gá aige roinnt fiosrúcháin a dhéanamh ar a chuid cumas éisteachta! D’inis sé dom go raibh sé ar buile agus é i lár chathair Chorcaí le déanaí ag iarraidh bualadh isteach go dtí siopa spéaclaí agus cluas chun go ndéanfaí na fiosrúcháin cuí air. Tharla sé gur imigh sé ar thóir an ionaid ceart ach go raibh deacrachtaí aige teacht ar an bhfoirgneamh ceart. Cé go bhfuil bata bán aige – a léiríonn do dhaoine mórthimpeall air go bhfuil sé dall – agus go rinne sé iarracht ceist a chur ar dhaoine chun treoir a fháil chuig an fhoirgnimh áraithe seo, níor stop oiread agus duine amháin chun cabhrú leis. Tharla sé go raibh sé ar an sráid mícheart, agus tar éis roinnt mhaith ama tháinig duine i gcabhair air. An rud a scanraigh é ab ea an eagla a tháinig air mar nach raibh a fhios aige go beacht cá raibh sé, agus dúirt sé gur mhair an eagla seo roinnt mhaith ama. Dúirt sé gurb é an chéad uair riamh ar tharla a leithéid dó – sé sin nár tháinig duine ar bith i gcabhair air ar feadh tamaillín mhaith. I gcomhrá leis ó shin, agus i gcomhrá le cara aosta againn – bean atá in aois a hochtó agus a bhí scanraithe faoin eachtra thuas, agus níl aithne ag ceachtar den bheirt ar a chéile – nós siad an tuairim go bhfuil athrú suntasach le mothú sa phobail in Éirinn le blianta beaga anuas. Athrú leis an mbéim ar an airgead, ar nithe agus go bhfuil an leithleas ag teacht ar aghaidh, nach bhfuil an comhrá ann mórán níos mó mar go bhfuil níos mó spéise ag daoine sna fearais teicneolaíochta cumarsáide mar an teilifís, an ríomhaire agus an fón so-gluaiste! Dúirt an sean-bhean go bhfuil ‘áthas’ uirthi go bhfuil deireadh ag teacht ar a shaol seachas go bhfuil sí ag tosú ar a shaoil. Nach trua an dá eachtra? Céard atá ar bun againn? Cathain ar bhuaigh tábhacht an airgid ar thábhacht an duine? Cá bhfuilimid mar náisiún, agus mar dhaoine Éireannaigh ag ‘dul’ na laethanta seo? Aontaím leis an sean-bhean. Ní thaitníonn sé liom mar atá cúrsaí ag dul sa tír, agus nílim ag caint ar an pholaitíocht náisiúnta, ach ar dhearcadh muintir na tíre – ach cad is féidir a dhéanamh faoi?
Long term unemployment has dramatically risen in last year Fine Gael’s Cork South Central Senator Jerry Buttimer has today slammed the government on its inaction when it comes to long term unemployment. In the last year alone the amount of long term unemployed has surged by over 72,000 people. Senator Buttimer said “This government can no longer ignore the problem of the long term unemployed. There are currently over 291,000 people who have been out of work for more than one year. This number does not take into account the amount of people waiting to hear if they have qualified for job seekers allowance, nor does it take into account the number of people who have been refused jobs seekers allowance. “This issue must be dealt with immediately otherwise we are facing down the barrel of a vast exodus of our people as they go in search of employment abroad. The government should be doing everything in its power to ensure that these people stay in Ireland, the only way to guarantee this is to create the conditions in which employment can be created. “The governments banking strategy has failed in every way, not only has it cost the taxpayer billions but most crucially it has not started banks lending to businesses again. The government needs to create the conditions in which jobs can flourish; this government has failed to do this as is clearly evident from this shocking increase in the live register last month. “I am calling on Fianna Fail and the Greens to tackle the jobs crisis, this is only way that we can have an economic recovery. The government however, doesn’t not have a jobs plan, Fine Gael does and it is based on a vision that will improve our infrastructure, that will make us internationally competitive, that will create thousands of jobs a vision that will dramatically reduce the amount of young people on the live register in 12 months. “Fianna Fail and the Greens must either adopt Fine Gael’s vision relating to jobs or quite simply and preferably they should call a general election, so that the Irish people get a government that wants to rebuild Ireland, and create a new society that is fairer, more open and one that puts the ordinary people first and not the banks or developers.”

G.A.A. FOCUS Snippets from the Local and National Scene

A long-time acquaintance of mine (42 years) rang me recently promoting the junior football and intermediate hurling inter-county, provincial and all-Ireland championships. The rules of player qualification differ in some counties. For example in Cork a player who played senior club championship the year previous may not qualify; that same rule does not apply in Waterford. In the Déise a player cannot have played inter-county championship the previous year. This competition may provide a window of opportunity for those players with ambition to play at a higher level. It may also be the only opportunity for players to don the Red Jersey. The earlier rounds of lower grade provincial championships are played before the senior games; an excellent opportunity for these players to parade their skills in front of big attendances. The downside is of course the cost factor for the county boards. Some delegates at congress were anxious to delete them from the games calendar. It is the view of some people that such championship games are an interruption to club training & fixtures. I am sitting on the fence on this one and I invite you the reader to form your own opinion.

The Déise Man Down Waterford way Dan the Man was the hero having scored the winning goal in the Munster final. Well, here in Douglas we have Jimmy the Déise Man. It’s said that Jimmy hasn’t taken off the jersey since the Munster final. I suspect that Jimmy has five or six such jerseys as the white panel of the apparel is constantly whiter than white. Joking aside our Jimmy is a most enthusiastic young man who devotes his spare time to coaching Street Leagues kids. Without him and all the other volunteers throughout the country organizations like ours could not function. Admission Prices Once again Páraic Duffy was defending the admission prices to our games. He attempted to simplify the issue by stating that if the G.A.A. reduced the ticket price by 5 euro this year the organization would be down five million euro. Mr. Duffy, people have taken pay cuts, lost their jobs, their homes and you tell us what the association could lose! The G.A.A. boasts that it is an organization of the people for the people; that it is about community. My feeling is that there is an issue of them and us here. Come down to the grassroots and see for yourself how people are struggling. Forget what other organizations are doing. Let’s be leaders in sport and get our own house in order. The Kingdom’s reign as all-Ireland champions has come to an end. No doubt the two suspended players were a huge loss; and by the way, they deserved their suspensions. The disallowed Kerry goal in the opening

half was a bad call and a wrong decision. I recall seeing Down play for the first time in 1968. They have a great style of play and are an all round very stylish team. But they have won nothing yet. I am an admirer of G.A.A. President Christy Cooney; he has surprised me in some instances with his broad-minded views. On the other hand he has been quoted as saying there is no need to change the system whereby the referee picks his own umpires. I understand that there is some training provided for these officials but one would have to ask the question, are they suitably versed in the rules to bring an incident to the notice of the referee? It has been trotted out that they also work with the referee at club matches and there is no reason why they cannot perform at intercounty level, but there is far greater attendances at intercounty games and consequently there is more pressure. The G.A.A. is professional in every way but in name. Players work harder nowadays and they deserve officials of the highest standard. Yes there are those who point out that refereeing mistakes are made in all sporting codes. Christy Cooney said that for the volume of games played the number of mistakes is minimal. That said the G.A.A. should not sit on the fence. It’s time to move on and minimize the instances of error and if rules must be changed then so be it. The Clock The clock is another area where change is required. This pressure should be taken off the referee. The clock is used in ladies football and to great effect.

DOUGLAS GAA Senior Hurling & Senior Football Douglas played Blarney in a recent senior hurling league and while Blarney were on top early on, the game turned when Stephen Moylan goaled for Douglas after thirteen minutes. Kevin Murphy added another goal soon after and Finbarr Desmond continued his impressive form by scoring a third Douglas goal. The final score was Douglas 3-12 Blarney 1-13. Ray Keating’s collision with a goal post resulted in his premature departure and despite concerns over his shoulder injury, the dual player is likely to be back in action shortly. This is a relief given that Douglas play Carbery in the senior football championship on Tuesday 24th August in Cloughduv (6.30pm) while the senior hurling championship clash between Douglas and UCC is fixed for Monday 30th August in Páirc uí Rinn (6.30pm). Minor & Under 21 Hurling: Both teams are preparing for an important week as their respective championship campaigns commence. On Tuesday 17th August the Douglas minor hurlers play Erin’s Own while the following evening Blackrock provide the opposition for the under 21 team. Under 13 Hurling Blitz: The annual under 13 hurling blitz takes place in Douglas GAA Club on Saturday 14th August. Eight clubs are participating in this years blitz including teams from Kildare, Dublin, Tipperary and Kilkenny. Since its inception several years ago this annual blitz has been an enormous success and for anybody with an interest in hurling, a visit to the club grounds next Saturday is recommended. Douglas Camogie: The Cork senior camogie team play Galway on Saturday 14th August in the all-Ireland semi-final. The Cork panel features several players from the Douglas camogie club. Best wishes to them in their bid to reach the all-Ireland final.
