by George Thompson - Editor

End of Summer As the end of summer approaches I am looking forward to a few days break next week in remote west Cork, taking to the road in the direction of the Beara Peninsula, I’m looking forward to shooting some landscapes and just chilling out. Before I go I will be covering the Munster 100 Road Races in Dunmanway this weekend where an estimated 10,000 spectators are expected and hopefully the weather keeps up for the occasion.

Hope Foundation – Ladies Mini Marathon As that time of year approaches once more for the Ladies Mini Marathon I was asked by my good friends at the HOPE foundation, to highlight that 250,000 children are living on the streets of Calcutta and The HOPE Foundation is funding projects in healthcare, education, shelter and child protection to help children and their families to break the cycle of poverty. You can make a difference… Take part in the Evening Echo Women's Mini Marathon in aid of The HOPE Foundation on Sunday 26th September & change the lives of street & slum children. Contact Madeleine on 021-4292990 or HYPERLINK "mailto:madeleine@hopefoundation.ie" madeleine@hopefoundation.ie for a sponsorship card & t-shirt. Irish Lifeboats Need Your Help While I give to most charities (who doesn’t), I have to say that the one I am keenest to support is the RNLI and here at the Post we give coverage to their ‘shouts’, specially those of the Ballycotton crew. The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea, and needs your support to train and equip their volunteer lifeboat crews. The RNLI Annual Cork Flag Day collection takes place on Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd September in Cork city and suburbs. If you can spare an hour or two to help them collect for their volunteer lifeboat crews around the coast, please contact 021 4823414 or 087 • Kevin Sanquest is Cork Person of Month. We’d love to hear from you. If you have any news, views or issues you’d like to see covered, write to the Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas West, Cork or by e-mail to frontdesk@douglaspost.ie Please include your name and address and a contact number. There will be blood!! Dear Editor Must bankers, Fianna Failures, the wealthy, health bosses, others exploiting the poor, sick of all ages, mortgage payers, be put to the proverbial sword before present Government accedes to elections? We are on the brink of a people’s revolution. An Armageddon situation! You have been warned Taoiseach Cowen and your cohorts!! Neil O’Donoghue Greenhills

Does Crime Pay? Dear Editor, It seems that crime does pay. I was disgusted to learn that it cost €77,000 a year to keep a prisoner. Is it any wonder they are happy enough to stay in there, a roof over their heads and three meals a day? Now I say, what’s the world coming to? They are getting top class treatment in private clinics, while poor Joe Soap has to wait for hours in the A&E department; Mountjoy is a hotel for them, they don’t have to pay V.H.I. to cover themselves. Why not get a Doctor and Nurse in there to treat them inside . What a waste of money. May God help the Irish people – enough is enough. Thanking you, Joe Brown Blackrock.

General Elections and Bye-Elections? Dear Editor, The current Government claims to have a mandate to carry on until 2012 without facing into a General Election. In the ranks of the Government, we have

a Minister for Health who was elected by the PDs on a Progressive Democrat policy. That Party is now dissolved. We also have Senator Ivor Callelly who was appointed to the Senate by Bertie Ahern. We are now informed by Brian Cowen that he has no power to remove a Taoiseach’s nominee from the Senate. Mr. Cowen’s Government claims a mandate to introduce hard measures on the upright citizens in order to save the bankers and the other elements of Gombeen Ireland. If a General Election continues to be refused by the Taoiseach, then it is time that writ for the three Bye-Elections was moved without Government obstruction. The vacancies have arisen because Pat the Cope Gallagher was elected to the European Parliament 14 months ago and had to resign his Dail seat in the rural 3-seater of Donegal South West. George Lee resigned his seat in the 5-seater Dublin South constituency because he felt he was being ostracised by the leadership of Fine Gael. The vacancy occurred in the 4-seater Waterford Constituency when Minister Martin Cullen resigned because of chronic back injuries. Waterford is a mixed urban/rural Constituency. The combination of all three ByeElections represents a microcosm of the mix of the population across the State. If the three Bye-Elections were to be held on the same date, it would be an opportunity for all political parties to present their manifestos on economic and financial policies and would leave us with a clear indication as to the people’s choice of policy, and clearly indicate how much of a mandate Fianna Fail or any of the other parties would be in receipt of and would be a clear manifestation of the will of the people. Yours sincerely Con O’Mahony.

Deirdre Clune T.D.

NO ELECTRICITY IS A NEW LOW FOR FAMILIES ALREADY STRUGGLING LAST weekend’s reports of the ESB cutting off 30 houses per day was frightening news considering that it came out at the same time as other news reports saying that 42,000 people are receiving emergency welfare payments this year already, 6,454 more than the entire figure for 2008. The latter figures show that times are even tougher for families to get by and having to manage without electricity makes it even harder. Lone parents have once again come up as one of the family groups who are applying for this emergency social welfare payments which were designed to provide a small weekly allowance to people with little or no income. This group have been consistently proven to be one of the most hard hit and more liable for poverty in recent years. Nonpayment of maintenance is a significant contributing factor, as social welfare entitlements take into account the amount of maintenance awarded to lone parent families. According to figures published on the Irish Examiner earlier this week, 4,000 of the 42,000 people receiving these emergency payments are lone parents, while a further 4,000 are people awaiting a disability benefit. 20,000 are unemployed people awaiting jobseekers benefit. Three high-risk groups for increased poverty. Cutting someone’s electricity may be necessary if someone is consistently failing to pay and won’t pay, but many people have lost jobs, their partners or spouses have also lost an income and they can’t pay. There is a big distinction and it must be highlighted and acknowledged before any drastic measure, such as cutting off the electricity, is made.

There continues to be a great response from parents and students to the Kip McGrath Education Centre that was opened in September 2008 by James Sexton. The Centre in Bishopstown provides tuition for primary and secondary students between the ages of 6 and 14 and specialises in English, Reading, Spelling, Mathematics and Irish. Lessons take place throughout the school year with new enrolments now being taken for September. There are currently over 600 Kip McGrath Education Centres worldwide. The systems and methods used have been adapted to meet the needs of the Irish curriculum with other Centres successfully operating in Dublin, Kerry, Waterford and Northern Ireland. The Centre at Unit 2, Ardrostig, Bishopstown is owned and operated by James Sexton, a fully qualified teacher with 17 years of classroom experience. James was educated at Colaiste an Spioraid Naoimh, Bishopstown and holds a B.A. degree and Higher Diploma in Education from University College Cork. The modern and spacious Centre is conveniently located opposite the entrance to Dunnes Stores, Bishopstown Court. The Centre is equipped with modern computer facilities and provides a unique learning environment where students are taught in small groups of no more than five. A wide variety of students attend the Centre. It caters for children who are having difficulty with their schoolwork or have fallen behind as well as children who would like to be challenged further. Students are offered a free assessment and individual programmes of study are devised focusing on the specific needs of each student. They are guided through their work by experienced and fully qualified teachers. Classes run after school from Monday to Friday.

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn

The world of poetry seems to have no boundaries. Our poem this week was sent to us by Jason Parks who originates from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Jason has never been to Ireland but he plans to visit here soon as he has a strong affinity for Irish writing and also his grandmother is originally from Cork and she moved to Canada in the 1950’s. It’s a long ways from Canada, to the Middle –Eastern City of Doha in Qatar where Jason currently resides. He tells us that Doha, Qatar is a wonderful city in many ways but it is very different from his home town in Canada, and also it is sometimes difficult being so far away from family and friends. This poem is a lighthearted take on the life of an expat. Things We Need in Doha They need to make a remotecontrolled baby stroller as well as a monorail from here to my house in Canada and also a zip-line between the Harp bar in the basement of the Sheraton and my villa I’d make it home much more often that way we could also use moving sidewalks or sidewalks of any kind because they are few and far between in this city I would also not object to teleporters, magic carpets, or docile camels requiring no maintenance and having the capability of turning the flat desert wastes around them into lush green hills and river valleys Jason Parks Send your poem to ‘The Poetry Corner’ / Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas or you can email it direct to ronniemcginn@ eircom.net. If possible keep your poem to 20 lines. You may choose any subject you like, in any form you like as long as it’s original. We look forward to hearing from you. RonnieMcGinn

Brainteazer Last Week’s Teazer. The parish clerk of a West Cork town received a small parcel from Germany addressed to Mr. Alfred White, she checked the telephone directory but could find no one listed under that name. However, when she inquired at the local pub she was told by some of the town’s old timers that there had been an Alfred White and that after World War 2 , he had married

Last Weeks

a German and settled in Frankfurt. What was in the parcel ? Last Week’s Answer. Mr White was , or at least his ashes. His last request was that his remains be interred in the local cemetery. The German authorities did not know who to address the urn to and so came up with a rather strange solution to their dilemma. This Week’s Teazer The little Scottish island of Moray boasts the grandly titled “Bridge over the Atlantic” (The locals gloss over the fact that , at this point the Atlantic is only a few feet wide). The bridge is only single track and every morning McLeod the postman drives his van at breakneck speed over the bridge and onto the island. However, every morning the local milkman drives his van at similar speed across the bridge as he leaves the island. Neither could ever bring himself to give way, so why is there never an accident ?

Douglas Tidy Towns Update The summer has been wonderful so far, with sunshine nearly every day, but the lack of water has made it difficult for the Tidy Towns members, who struggle to keep the parched containers watered to maintain the colourful parade of flowers and to keep up with watering of newly planted trees and shrubs that are establishing roots in their first season. John Fitzgerald, Chairman, the dynamic driver of the team, reports as follows: “Trees we planted on the relief road and at the slip road entrance to East Village (opposite Ulster Bank) are maturing and indeed that whole area is now looking good, as are the trees on the bank at Douglas Court. The Beech hedging and the Geranium boxes near the E.S.B. substation are also most attractive. Constituency Office 29 St. Patricks Mills, Douglas, Cork. NRA EXPECTS BANDON ROAD & SARSFIELD ROAD FLYOVERS TO PROCEED Cork South Central T.D. Michael McGrath has been informed in writing by the Chief Executive of the NRA that the authority expects to have sufficient funding in 2011 to proceed with the construction of the Bandon road and Sarsfield road flyovers as planned. Deputy McGrath wrote to the NRA’s Chief Executive Mr. Fred Barry last month following media reports that the two flyovers were at risk due to funding constraints. ‘I am pleased that NRA remains committed to constructing these two flyovers on the southern ring road network. The Government has already indicated the overall capital budget for next year and the NRA is working on the basis of these figures. Mr. Barry’s reassurance regarding the project is therefore very encouraging. ‘The NRA went to tender for the construction of the two interchanges last April and will be in a position to appoint a contractor later this year once its budget for 2011 is confirmed. ‘These two interchanges will also make daily life so much easier for thousands of Cork commuters and will provide a real economic boost to the region. ‘I understand that the construction phase will take approx. 18 months to complete and I am looking forward to seeing progress on the ground over the months ahead,’ concluded Deputy McGrath.

ART ON A RAIL The Carrigaline Art on a Rail exhibition was so successful on Sunday July 25th that it is being repeated this Sunday 22nd August from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm. Organised by the Carrigaline Arts Network the exhibition will be located on Bothar Guidel on the Rails of the Town Park adjacent to the Children’s playground. All artists are invited to exhibit and the general public is welcome to attend, to view and to purchase if they wish. BRILLIANT NIGHT The annual fundraising night in aid of Marymount and MS Ireland (Cork) in Carrigaline GAA Pavilion last Thursday proved highly successful both financially and socially. Bridie Mulqueen who has been fundraising for Cancer Support for decades was over the moon with the success of the night. Her friends the Owenabue Valley Traditional Group excelled with a great variety of dance music for the Céilí, Set and Old Time dancing which made it a great occasion. To add to the night’s entertainment step dancers from the Kiely Walsh Academy of Dance and the Cannon Lee School put on spectacular displays. The Cannon Lee who were sporting their beautiful new costumes for the first time come from east Cork, the dance school is run by Bridie Mulqueen’s daughter Sheila and her husband Liam Gallagher. Many tourists including 45 adults who attended from UCC English College really enjoyed the traditional night and had little difficulty in picking up the Irish dancing. CÉILÍ MÓR People came from far and wide to the Carrigaline Céilí Mór on Saturday night last to dance to the exciting music of the Matt Cunningham Céilí Band. While some visiting tourists came to look, listen and enjoy the Céilí experience most were dancing on the floor all night. Major attraction for the September 11th Céilí will be the 2008 All Ireland Céilí Band Champions the 10 piece Allow Céilí Band from Freemount. Enquiries Barry Cogan 087 813 7990.

tan along with OPI, Shellac and the most exclusive Acrylic nail care systems are the finest and most enduring treatments currently available anywhere. So once you’ve visited the Devereaux Beauty Clinic the guarantee is that you’ll want to return. In the comfortable and purposely designed space provided which facilities include a spray tan room with shower, two dedicated therapy beds for waxing and the most extraordinary massage therapies, a nail bar and make up station, the treatments and the care -to say nothing of the take home menu for topping up the positive results acquired- are second to no other beauty clinic either in Douglas or the wider city. As if such expertise in care and treatment wasn’t a cut above that of other establishments, one of the more amazing devices to characterize Lindsay’s clinic is the extraordinary back massaging foot spa and pedicure chair which can keep a client in a state of suspended

relaxation for hours of deep luxury and sublime finishing. Unsurprisingly for such a complete yet affordable service, there is available exclusively through the Devereaux Beauty Clinic access to a consultant surgeon specializing in fine line wrinkle cosmetic treatments, a service that attends to crows feet reduction as well as lip and cheek plumping by means of various techniques. As part of the Devereaux approach to ensuring good value the preliminary consultation is also free of charge. The Rystalane and Juvederm face filler brands are emphatically top of the range products. The detoxifying, relaxing and skinenhancing Devereaux Beauty Clinic may be accessed by entering Maryborough Woods from the Carrs Hill side or by turning in the opposite direction of the entrance to Maryborough House Hotel on Maryborough Hill. The Mall is located approximately three hundred yards from either approach and has the benefit of allowing for completely free parking, an important consideration if you’re spending the day at the Clinic as many clients inevitably do. Once you’ve arrived, you’ll be treated to cappuccino, latté or wine according to your preference and if you choose to visit before mid-September you’ll accordingly benefit from a 20% reduction in all treatments including the Dermalogica product range, a range that’s finding favour not just with the female gender but with men as well. At this time of year however, it’s evident that debs are planning those once-in-a-lifetime special evenings and Lindsey and her team have recognized this by creating three excellent and dedicated packages to make those nights shine beautiful and glamorous. Unusually, waxing specializations extend to include the Californian, Brazilian and Hollywood variants –few other beauty clinics do so- while the most up-to-theminute eyelash extensions are also testimony to the excellent service standards offered. Inevitably, each brand used at this most friendly and comfortable yet luxuriously exclusive of beauty clinics has been especially chosen on the basis of their being the finest, most hypo-allergenic and detoxifying agents

in current use. The certainty is that you can’t help but be impressed at this one-stop beauty clinic and make it one of the prominent features of life as you pursue an exhaustive array of health and beauty treatments because health and beauty don’t come better provided for than here at the superb Devereaux Beauty Clinic in Maryborough Woods.

Insect bites and stings Signs and symptoms of an insect bite result from the injection of venom or other substances into your skin. The venom sometimes triggers an allergic reaction. The severity of your reaction depends on your sensitivity to the insect venom or substance and whether you've been stung or bitten more than once. Most reactions to insect bites are mild, causing little more than an annoying itching or stinging sensation and mild swelling that disappear within a day or so. A delayed reaction may cause fever, hives, painful joints and swollen glands. You might experience both the immediate and the delayed reactions from the same insect bite or sting. Only a small percentage of people develop severe reactions (anaphylaxis) to insect venom. Signs and symptoms

of a severe reaction include: • Nausea • Facial swelling • Difficulty breathing • Abdominal pain • Deterioration of blood pressure and circulation (shock) Bites from bees, wasps, hornets etc. are typically the most troublesome. Bites from mosquitoes, ticks, biting flies also can cause reactions, but these are generally milder. Although rare, some insects also carry disease such as West Nile virus or Lyme disease. For mild reactions Move to a safe area to avoid more stings. Remove the stinger, especially if it's stuck in your skin. This will prevent the release of more venom. Wash area with soap and water. Apply a cold pack or cloth filled with ice to reduce pain and swelling. Apply hydrocortisone cream (0.5

percent), calamine lotion or a baking soda paste — with a ratio of 3 teaspoons (15 milliliters) baking soda to 1 teaspoon (5 milliliters) water — to the bite or sting several times a day until symptoms subside. Take an antihistamine Allergic reactions may include mild nausea and intestinal cramps, diarrhea, or swelling larger than 2 inches (5 centimeters) in diameter at the site. See your doctor promptly if you experience any of these signs and symptoms. For severe reactions Severe reactions may progress rapidly. Call 999 for emergency medical assistance if the following signs or symptoms occur: • Difficulty breathing • Swelling of the lips or throat • Faintness • Dizziness • Confusion • Rapid heartbeat Take these actions immediately while waiting with an affected person for medical help: Check for medications that the

person might be carrying to treat an allergic attack, such as an auto-injector of epinephrine (for example, EpiPen). Administer the drug as directed. Have the person take an antihistamine pill if he or she is able to do so without choking. Do this after administering epinephrine. Have the person lie still on his or her back with feet higher than the head. Loosen tight clothing and cover the person with a blanket. Don't give anything to drink. Turn the person on his or her side to prevent choking if there's vomiting or bleeding from the mouth. Begin CPR if there are no signs of circulation, such as breathing, coughing or movement. If your doctor has prescribed an auto-injector of epinephrine, read the instructions before a problem develops and also have your household members read them. LAWNS & HEDGES

WATER GARDEN

Trim evergreen hedges for the last time. Sow new lawns on prepared sites.

Continue thinning and deadheading in the bog garden.

GREENHOUSE

It can seem like a little consolation that the hedge-cutting season is coming to a close. As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

KITCHEN GARDEN Pot up strawberries for forcing, and stand outdoors in a shaded position. Store Japanese onions, lifted and dried earlier, in a dry frost-free place where they will keep for a few months. Sow Japanese onions in the south. Prune wall-trained peaches and nectarines after fruiting, cutting out old stems and replacing with

new. Lift main crop onions with a fork, and dry in the sun.

FLOWER GARDEN Trim Virginia creeper and similar climbers away from gutters and windows. Lift, divide and replant lilies, saving scales and tiny bulbs for potting up. Install earwig traps among dahlias - fill upturned pots with straw or crumpled newspaper, and invert on canes.

Wash down the glass in greenhouse and cold frames, inside and out. Continue potting hyacinth bulbs up to 15 September for Christmas flowering. Start making up winter hanging baskets. Remove bottom leaves of cordon tomatoes, up to the lowest trusses, to admit air and light. Repot or pot on cyclamen clearing. corms once their leaves are growing steadily. Pot on greenhouse primulas into 13cm (Sin) pots. Sow greenhouse cyclamen in soil-less compost in warmth.

IN GENERAL Make containers and wire compounds for leaves and compost, ready for autumn clearing. Watch out for Vine weevil grubs feeding voraciously on many kinds of plants, and treat with parasitic nematodes. Check brassicas regularly for caterpillars and clusters of butterfly eggs. Finnish summer pruning all fruit. Cut out the exhausted stems of loganberries and other hybrid berries, and tie in new canes. Water and mulch runner beans and the pods ripen Watch out for woolly aphids on apples and treat with methylated spirits.

World’s Biggest Motoring Fine A speeding Swedish driver is facing the world's biggest motoring fine yet of €650 000 after being clocked at 290km/h while driving through Switzerland. The 37-year-old man's Mercedes SLS AMG was impounded along with his driving licence after soaring along at two and a half times the speed limit on a Swiss freeway. A police spokesman said: "We have no record of anybody being caught travelling faster in this country." The unnamed man was caught by a speed camera on the A12 highway between Bern and Lausanne. The police arrested him shortly afterwards when he stopped in a layby and he was released after questioning It is believed he was collecting the brand new car from a seller in Germany. Benoit Dumas, a police officer in the area where the 6.3-litre SLS was impounded, said: "He needed more than half a kilometre of road to stop." The driver had previously escaped being caught by numerous speed cameras on his journey simply because he was going too fast and the instruments were incapable of clocking any speed beyond 200km/h. It was a new generation of radar camera that finally caught him zooming along at nearly 300km/h. He told police: "I think the speedo on the car, which is new, is faulty." He is unlikely to go to prison but is expected to be hit with the landmark fine because of the way speeding fines are administered in Switzerland When his case is judged by a magistrate the fine will be based on his income and the "extraordinary speed" at which he was travelling. He is threatened with the highest possible penalty of 300 days of fines at 3600 Swiss francs a day which comes out to close to € 650 000. In Switzerland and Germany it is common for fines to be levied in such a way. In Switzerland the fine is always dependant on a person's income - and clearly the suspect in this speeding affair is very rich indeed. The car will now undergo a technical inspection to see if his tale of a faulty speedometer holds up.

Harney and the HSE must not be allowed to starve Mallow of vital resources Speaking following the publication of the terms of reference for the HIQA inquiry into Mallow General Hospital,

local Senator, Paul Bradford, said if there are areas of concern within the Hospital, it is incumbent on the Minister for Health and the HSE to provide sufficient resources to ensure the hospital can continue to deliver a high quality service to the patients it treats. “If there are issues of concern with Mallow General, let us hear about them and let us deal with them through additional and sufficient invest. “Failed Government policy has presided over the downgrading of hospitals the length and breadth of the country resulting in a reduction of services for local communities. This must not be the case where Mallow is concerned. “For any hospital to meet the needs of the people it serves, it is crucial that adequate resources are delivered to ensure it can continue to grow and develop. Mallow serves a far-reaching catchment area, which extends not just the people of north Cork but large parts of Limerick, Kerry and the entire province. Any attempt to downgrade the Hospital would heap unmanageable pressure on other hospitals in the HSE South area and spell disaster for healthcare provision in the region. “Every hospital needs to be properly resourced, and Mallow is no different. Instead of ensuring this investment, however, Mary Harney and her HSE have been steadily starving Mallow of funding and resources. “On a per capita basis, Mallow General has delivered exceptional value for money for the taxpayer and since the first attempts to close the facility down more than 40 years ago, hundreds of thousands of patients have been successfully treated there.

• Tenth Tour de Munster is toughest yet! 120 amateur cyclists set off from Cork City Hall with cycling legend Sean Kelly for a 600 km charity cycle in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland, Munster Branches yesterday. Pictured at the start of the cycle are Maggie, Fiona and Ciara Buckley from Macroom. Pic: Miki Barlok “It is no secret that Mallow has never been top of the priority list where the HSE, the Minister and the Government are concerned. They cannot, however, be allowed to continue to starve it of resources as it will not be to anyone’s advantage to have the facility downgraded in any way. “It is of critical importance that any shortfalls in Mallow General are identified without delay and that resources are made available to put the situation right so that Mallow can continue to do what it does best in caring for the people of Munster.”

As I expected there was a huge response to the article on the Mills in Douglas and how tragic that nothing is preserved from that era. I had a lot of calls from people relating there own human stories from both St Patrick’s and Morroghs Mills the fun they had and in particular the loyalty and comradry they all enjoyed. Cork Community TU are also interested in doing a film on both Mills and its people. “Yes they were very special years”, “Indeed there is definitely a book” to be wrote relating to these years in our history of anyone who who like to contribute or sponsor such a project I would love to put it in print in a book and tell the stories of the people who worked in the factories. We should do so will that generation are still with us, contact me on 4363867. I organised a reunion from Murrogh Mills a few years back and it was a wonderful night, I know St Patrick’s also has a reunion. I will organise a reunion from Murroghs, St Patrick’s, Munster Carpets etc before to long. As I fear not only are the machines lost to us but that “Generation will also” anyone willing to help call me on 4363867. The Douglas post will run and sponsor a competition relating

to how many couples met and married each other in either St Patrick’s or Murroghs whoever comes up with the highest number will get the prize, I can guess 5 but I can guess there are many many more, “that is your homework for this week”. Another project close to my heart is the Care Ring Friendly Phone Service, which will enable us to connect with older people who are isolated in our community. The good news is Secad have agreed to fund this very worth while project, I thank them most sincerely for helping me bring this service to fruititon. It was a concept I strongly believed in and thankfully so did H.S.E in particular Cariosa Lynch Community worker, my thanks also to Liam Edwards who is my right hand man and has contributed so much. A big thank you also to Sgt Tony Davis I put this idea way back to Tony and with his belief and encouragement and staying with it all the way. I would also like to thank the Douglas Post, Deirbhile Dennehy acting executive librarian Douglas Library, Douglas Lions Club, Douglas Community Association from where the service will operate every Monday from 1-4. There is a team of 10 volunteers who will undergo intensive training from the H.S.E also Garda Vetting starting on the 7th of September, 16th of September both from 10-1 in

O Sullivan’s Bar in Douglas. Thank you Donal for facilitating us, third day of training will be in Bandon on the 21st where our volunteers can actually see the service in progress. Commencement of the service is on Monday October 11th in Douglas Community Centre from 1-4 for more information call me on 4363867. Time to get back into shape after the summer months; walk in the park every Monday with our physical activities. An Giota Gaeilge Le Liam Ó Móráin

Moladh ‘Lonely Planet’ faoi Chorcaigh ag mealladh cuairteoirí Nuair a mhol foilsitheoirí an treoir iris taistil agus eolas ar Éirinn, Lonely Planet’ dá léitheoirí cathair Chorcaí mar ceann den gcéad deich ionad cuairte is turasóireachta domhanda níos luaithe sa bhliain, is beag duine a thuig brí nó an moladh seo. Le níos mó ná mí anuas airím borradh i líon na gcuairteoirí ar an gcathair, Fiú inár loistín féin tugaimid faoi ndeara go bhfuil athrú suntasach ar aois na gcuairteoirí mar-aon le bunadh na ndaoine iasachta seo.

• THE ROUND IRELAND CHALLENGE, James Bendon, Sean Murphy, Katie Cambier Ross, Ayden Clarke, Tessa Kingston, Katy Mullins, David Lee and Ben Fusco, members of a group of eight teenagers from the Kinsale area is embarking on a Round Ireland Challenge in aid of the world’s largest charity hospital ship, pictured aboard their boat Kinsale Co Cork, yesterday. I lár na cathrach dom ar an Domhnach seo thart bhíos ag siúl thar theach tábhairne clúiteach, nuair a chonaic buíon éagsúla de dhaoine nárbh ón dtír no ón gcathair iad. Bhí roinnt mhaith grúpaí ann, grúpaí nach raibh aon cheangail eatarthu, ach a bhí ag baint sult is taitneamh as teas na gréine, agus as an deoch ina lámh acu. Thuas staighre sa tigh tábhairne, bhí béicigh le clos ó lucht leanta Thiobraid Árann nó na Déise, faoi cé acu ar éirigh leo scór a aimsiú sa chluiche leath-cheannais iománaíochta a bhí le feiceáil ar an scáileán beag. Cé go raibh an dá dhream i ngiorracht scread asail dá chéile cheapfá go raibh aigéin ollmhór idir na heachtrannaigh agus na hÉireannaigh ann. Ba ón Spáinn, ón Iodáil agus on nGearmáin do na daoine seo agus bhí siad in aois na fichidí (déarfainn). Toisc go raibh an ghrian ag spalpadh bheartaíomar suí amuigh faoin spéir agus thugamar cuireadh dá gcuairteoirí bualadh amach linn agus gloine fíona a ghlacadh ina láimh – rud a rinneadar. Bhí an-spraoi againn, agus comhrá ar na difríochtaí agus na cosúlachtaí idir thíortha na hEorpa agus sinne ag an mbaile

• Jennifer Sleeman pictured outside her local parish Church, Church of the Immaculate Conception, Clonakilty, Co. Cork, yesterday. She is organising a one-day boycott of Sunday Mass by the faithful women of Ireland to let the Vatican and the Irish Church know that women are tired of being treating like second-class citizens. Pic Clare Keogh/Provision

Sa bhaile inár lóistín bhí daoine ón nGearmáin, ón bhFrainc, ó Luxembourg, ón Slóvaic, a d’fhan linn thar oíche agus phléamar cúrsaí polaitíochta na dtíortha agus béim ar leith ar an oideachais sna tíortha éagsúla – sin a tharlaíonn nuair a thagann múinteoirí le chéile. Gan amhras cabhraigh an fhíon go mór leis an gcomhrá, agus bhí an grian dulta faoi roimh deireadh an chomhrá – nó na hargóintí! Mo phointe is ea gur iontach ar fad é líon na ndaoine iasachta, idir óg agus aosta, a tháinig go Corcaigh ar mholadh an foilseachán treoir ‘Lonely Planet’. Tá moladh mór ag dul do Chomhairle na cathrach freisin mar go bhfuil an-jab déanta acu ar mhaisiúchán agus bainistíocht glanadh na cathrach – ar an Domhnach seo thart, fiú bhí foireann glanadh sráide na cathrach amuigh ag scuabadh na cosáin agus bóithre I lár na cathrach. Dar liom go gcabhraíonn seo go mór le haitheantas muintir na cathrach faoi stádas glan na cathrach, agus más ea is fearr – mar go bhfuil tionchar den scoth dá leithead ar dhaoine an cathair a choinneáil glan i gcónaí. Más iad seo torthaí an moladh ard a thug an treoir iris taistil, ‘Lonely Planet’ don gcathair, go fada buan iad! 28 - Thur 19 Aug '10

The draw for the ODM Financial Munster Senior Cup is being held on Wednesday, 11th August at 6pm at ODM Financial’s well appointed new offices in Bandon – the draw will be made by Cyril Fitzgerald, President Munster Branch IRFU and Dan Murphy, Partner ODM Financial. The ODM Financial sponsored Munster Senior Cup is an integral part of Munster’s domestic rugby season with the opening round scheduled to be played in September 2010. Commenting in advance of this seasons draw Dan Murphy stated “ODM Financial, Bank Place, Bandon as sponsors of the ODM Financial Munster Senior Cup are excited to play a part in taking domestic Munster rugby to the next level with the winners of this year’s competition going forward to represent our great province Munster in the All Ireland series. We believe that this new format aligns well with our ethos of taking our clients to the next level by effectively planning, the achievement of their financial goals with them. To win this historic Competition a team must combine the traditional values of team building with innovative and forward thinking game plans. This formula provides a natural fit between ODM Financial as sponsor and the Munster Senior Cup competition.” The Results of the Draw will be published on the Munster Rugby website on Thursday morning – www. munsterrugby.ie

G.A.A. FOCUS Snippets from the Local and national Scene By Pat Harrington Often through this column I have voiced the sincere opinion that neither Croke Park nor the Cork County Board has any concept or understanding of the effects of the recession on the common people of this country. For a family of five (2 adults + 3 children under 14 years) it costs 105 Euro to attend an all-Ireland semi-final. These figures do not include the cost of getting to Croker – and of course the family must be fed. This year the footballers have thus far played five championship games; the hurlers have also played five. Many people who are involved with their clubs giving freely of their time and energy would also have supported the adult teams at club level. The annual cost to these people doesn’t bear thinking about. Provincial Winners Fail All four provincial winners failed to reach the semi-final of the all-Ireland; the first time such a situation has occurred. Kildare lost to Louth in the opening round but they have turned their season around with victories over Antrim, Derry, Monaghan and Meath. The Kildare game is built on high workrate with huge energy involved. Their manager, Former Armagh footballer Kieran McGeaney has certainly toughened up his charges. The Lilywhites have always been perceived as pushovers when the pressure is on but one has to admire their running off the ball. Cork Am I a crank or am I just a typical, contrary Cork football supporter? And our footballers really do frustrate. In the opening half of the game against Roscommon they went around in circles with the ball at pedestrian pace. They hand-passed the 101 times making it very easy for their opponents to defend. Roscommon hand-passed 21 times. It’s very easy to defend this slow movement of the ball. To be fair Cork created some good goal chances though they scored from just one; their record is very poor when it comes to scoring majors. Michael Shields is not a full back as was shown up by Donie Shine. I maintain he should be played at half back. Alan O’Connor, Nicholas Murphy and Donnacha O’Connor made important contributions. Notably, in the second half the ball was kicked diagonally into the Cork forwards, an action that proved quite fruitful. I fail to se why Donnacha O’Connor was instructed to tap the ball over the bar from the penalty. The game was as good as over and would it not have been an opportunity to practice his penalty taking in a real match situation? Cork need to be far more ruthless. Questions to be asked I feel some questions need to be asked here. Can Cork afford to play Paddy Kelly and Paul Kerrigan as wing forwards on the same team? Should management go for Alan O’Connor and Nicholas Murphy? Colm O’Neill has not played well; is it time for Donnacha O’Connor? Should Canty not be fit, who will start in his place? And the big question, who will mark Bernard Brogan? This is not a good Dublin team but they defend in numbers and are very physical. Noel O’Leary stated that the team needed a kick in the behind – well so do the management. They need their team playing a more direct game with the ball being played at pace. Cut down on the number of hand-passes – 165 against Roscommon. Similarly Tyrone hand passed 168 times against Dublin and lost. Cork’s record against Dublin in championship since 1974 reads 3 defeats and one victory. Cork can win this one.
