The Word

Wonderful West Cork While ‘back to school’ is an ominous sign of the end of summer, at least this year the kids had a pretty decent run of good weather as opposed to recent years when the summers have been terrible with the weather coming right only once the kids had returned to school. I took the opportunity and made the most of the exceptional weather last week during my time off, spending a couple of days travelling around the peninsulas of wonderful West Cork and with the weather adding to the most breathtaking scenery, I really enjoyed the peace and quiet while myself and my son Mike photographed some beautiful landscapes. Visiting an early Burial Chamber near Goleen, we made our way to Mizen, Ireland’s most southerly point before taking the coast road towards Dunmanus and heading back towards Barley Cove to camp for the night. The following morning we passed through Durrus where I decided to make a personal pilgrimage to the Air India Disaster Memorial just a couple of miles down the road toward Adrigole, where I shed a tear and thought back to that terrible event. On we travelled, to Bantry and Glengarriff, before we pulled up at the almost hidden, rocky beach at Trafask in the shadow of the Caha mountains on the Beara Penninsula. Once more we shot some landscapes and as I watched Mike I was amazed at his technique and perspective with a camera, considering he is just 9 years old and I haven’t once tutored him in the art of photography. Gary ‘Spike’O’Sullivan This weekend Gary ‘Spike’O’Sullivan takes his professional career a stage further when he fights in Glasgow as part of a 3 year deal with promoter Frank Warren to be televised on SKY Sports. We wish him the best at The Post and while a Commonwealth title shot is on the cards for next year, we look forward to that eventual World title shot that is the Mahon man’s dream. Congratulations Well done to all those who received their Leaving Cert results recently and best of luck to those students who will receive their Junior Cert results in the coming weeks.

Deirdre Clune T.D.
Departure of Olwyn Enright from Dáil is a sad day for women in Irish Politics Olwyn Enright’s decision not to stand at the next General Election is blow both to the Fine Gael party and to women of all parties in the Dáil according to Deputy Deirdre Clune, one of the four remaining female TDs in Fine Gael among 48 male TDs. “As a young thirty-something woman with a lot to offer in terms of her legal background, her political experience at local and national level and her commitment to serving her constituents she embodied the type of person we need to encourage into the Dáil. Her decision not to stand for re-election I am sure it was a difficult one for her and her family and it brings to the fore the challenges facing women in politics.” “Olwyn and myself are two of only 78 women ever elected to the Dáil since the first election of female candidates in 1918. The last general election saw 22 female TDs elected to the Dáil out of 166, just 13.25%.” “Women politicians bring a different focus and a different set of priorities to their work and Irish politics could benefit from this. We need more women in Irish politics at all levels, at the Cabinet table, in the Dáil Chamber and in our Local Authority meeting rooms.” “Her departure should kick start a real debate on how to address the current gender imbalance in Irish politics. This debate should start within political parties to decide if they want to address the imbalance and how they are going to go about.”

family ties A Tiny Handful of Promise By Norris Burkes It was 3 a.m. when the doctors flooded her room with light. Still numb from pain medication, the new mom fumbled for her glasses, squinting to distinguish the blur of white coats. The doctors were saying something about needing some papers signed—now. Twenty miles and twenty minutes away, a high-pitched beep suddenly filled my dark bedroom. Numb from the early hour, I fumbled for my glasses too so I could read the number on my pager. Still groggy, I managed to get dressed while placing a whispered phone call to the
maternity ward. "Chaplain, we have a baby who's not doing well," the nurse reported. "The parents are asking for you to please come." Maternity wards are the happiest places on earth—except when they are the saddest places on earth. The contrast in patient stories on the floor can be jagged and capricious. Even as I enter a room of sobbing parents, I often will glance over my shoulder to see other families happily backslapping each other with congratulatory pats. As I stepped to the bedside, the
couple told me of their journey through a problem pregnancy filled with frightening neonatal reports. Concerned doctors were seeking parental consent for a birth-day surgery. "Has God just teased us?" the parents wondered aloud. Would it help to baptize the baby? Can you baptize her, Chaplain? Now, you have to understand: in my tradition I don't baptize babies. I asked the mother if she might have the strength to come with me to the neonatal intensive care unit (the NICU, which staffers pronounce "nick-u"). The NICU is a world of wires, IV bottles, tubes, and back-lit beds that remind me of the scene in the movie E.T. when scores of scientists and doctors examine the little alien. In close quarters, the doctors, nurses, and respiratory therapists squeeze through tangled tubes to deliver highly specialized health care to the tiniest people you'll ever see. As we encircled the baby, the usually noisy NICU fell silent in readiness for this "emergency blessing." Mom stood beside her tiny daughter, stroking the baby with her index finger in an attempt to re-establish the sustaining love of the umbilical cord. Her finger seemed just long enough to maintain a fragile connection between her and this baby of faith. It was an image reminiscent of the fingertip touch between God and Adam in Michelangelo's painting in the Sistine Chapel. In the E.T. movie, special-effects artisans attempted to recreate the scene using an extraterrestrial with a flashlight finger to deliver a healing touch to a child, but Hollywood could never paint this scene. With the touch of a single
finger, Mom was sharing the hopes and prayers of a family. Unceremoniously opening a bottle of sterile water, I placed a drop on the baby's forehead and asked that God "bless this child in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit." With that, Mom's whimpers melted into weeping. And as she cried, she took her daughter's tiny hand and, finding a spot that wasn't wrapped, poked, or monitored, she placed a kiss in that tiny palm and whispered something into those little, curled-up fingers. Then, as if she had placed a thing of priceless value in her daughter's grip for safekeeping, she closed it tight. This mother's love reminded me of the miraculous way in which God whispers his love into the hand of each of us when we are born, placing there a promise that, no matter what, he will never let us go. (Romans 8:38–39 KJV). Even as a minister, I sometimes forget how personal and deep God's love is for each of us. I often talk about the depth of God's love, but it took a mother's heartfelt whisper into a tiny hand to remind me that God is always there to love me, and all I need to do is reach out and accept it. I'll never know the exact words this young mother entrusted to her daughter's grip. But in the coming weeks of miraculous procedures and risky surgeries, the real miracle that was witnessed by all who would see it was how this little girl never released the grip of her mother's promise. Three months after her birth, she went home a healthy little girl.

DOUGLAS COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION News (With Helen Fox PRO) Market on the Move If there’s one thing certain to make us feel better about the end of summer and the inevitable onset of autumn, it’s the comfort of food. So with this in mind, I visited the Market at Douglas Community Park last Saturday, only to find that it was their last time there, I was so disappointed. I had come to expect that each week, the colourful and exciting community of producers of everything from cakes and bread, to free-range chickens, organic vegetables, pizzas, fresh fish, etc. would always be there. But Jean, the coordinator, told me that sadly there wasn’t enough support for the market in this location. However, the good news is they are moving to Douglas Court – the area opposite McDonald’s and the big roundabout, and will be there next Saturday from 10am-2 pm. Jean, (who doesn’t want to be named because she said everyone helps out!) asked if the regulars who have supported them would continue to do so at their new venue. The committee of Douglas Community Association wish them the very best of luck in their new location and the Tidy Towns crew who will be out in force as usual on Saturday morning, and who are used to anticipating their post-clean-up cuppa and cream bun at the park, might even show up for their usual at the new venue next Saturday!
ACTION NEEDED TO ALLEVIATE BACK-TOSCHOOL FINANCIAL BURDEN With more and more and more people now out of work and many others on reduced incomes the crippling costs faced by families as children return to school over the coming days will place unprecedented pressure on many families. Labour has previously published the findings of research indicating that it can cost as much as €1200 per child to cover the costs of uniforms, books, voluntary contributions, stationery etc. For instance, many schools require students to wear a specialised uniform which can prove to be particularly expensive when compared to those available in the chain stores. The Minister and her department can no longer wash their hands and needs to put much greater pressure on schools in this regard. I don’t accept the view that schools are entirely independent and that the Minister is powerless to act. At the very least she should publish a set of guidelines for schools in this regard, to ensure that all families are given the option of purchasing the less expensive uniforms. The Minister must also put greater pressure on schools to operate a book rental scheme. These schemes are operating in many if not most schools around the country, but there are still many where they are not. Book rental schemes can save families hundreds of euro and the Minister must incentivise schools to put such arrangements in place. I also believe that there should be an up-to-date review of the Aid for School Books Grant Scheme to take account of changing prices and changes in the use of textbooks and that the National Council for Curriculum Assessment should consider the cost of school books when drawing up new or amending existing curricula. The cost of running a school is all too often being passed on directly to parents in the form of voluntary contributions and various administration fees, but this cost could be reduced if schools could in some way pool their purchasing power. For example, An Garda Siochana secures substantial savings from service providers like the ESB by having one account that covers all stations. There is no reason that the Dept of Education could not negotiate such a deal for our schools. Indeed there’s no reason a similar arrangement could not be put in place for the providers of other goods and services such as cleaning and stationery. Finally, in recent weeks, the arrangements in place in the HSE for processing applications for the back to school allowance have proven to be completely inadequate. A massive backlog has built up and it is clear that thousands of families who are entitled to receive payment under the scheme will not receive it in time. The latest HSE response where staff have been reallocated to speed up the processing of these applications is too little too late, and these steps should have been taken weeks ago.

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn
Success in poetic technique depends on a balance between freedom and restraint. In this weeks poem, by Mark Stout of The Ballinlough Writers Group, we find a perfect example of the balance we refer to. One of the difficulties felt by modern poets is that there are now no accepted restrictions. A poet has complete freedom to write rhymed or unrhymed verse, to use regular stanza-forms or none, to invent his own new and personal rhythms or borrow the tighter rhythms of other poets. Mark has not allowed his writing to get bogged down by the weight of excessive restriction, instead his poem flows and draws in the reader with an effectiveness that will be the envy of many, but wins the admiration of us all. Tomorrows’ Ideas Tiring eyes shroud me, They want to rest – Just for a while, Without the use of Dalmane, To dream of the travels I will enjoy in the future, My beard of travel still grows, My burdened weight-carriers Of shoulders still reside, My feet walked a hundred miles, Through countries of culture, I cycled to places of awe, I swam in historic rivers and seas, Towns of my future Will see my footsteps, The rain-battered winds of today Will vanish with the boisterous Winter, The torture of boredom will lose, My tired eyes shall dreamOf tomorrows’ ideas And friends re-united. Mark Stout

Brainteazer Last Week’s Teazer Jim White watched in exasperation as the soccer team he had led to world fame over five years was trounced by Brazil. It was just awful! No matter how much he bellowed advice and encouragement nobody took the slightest notice. He almost wept with sheer frustration. At last the whole dismal affair was over and Brazil won by such a huge margin that it went into the record books.

Yet, oddly, when the next day’s newspapers came out, Jim, far from being attacked was extravagantly praised. Why ? Last Week’s Answer. Jim had retired as captain and was watching on T.V. The papers compared the teams current miserable performance with it’s fame under Jim’s captaincy. This Week’s Teazer A man went to the garage to have an electrical fault on his car repaired. Unfortunately the mechanic was ill and therefore the work could not be done, determined not to waste his trip the man decided to put his car through the car wash. He closed the sun roof, retracted the radio aerial, drove the car into the tunnel and then got out and waited outside for the washing to begin. It was only when he pushed the button that the man began to bellow with rage. Why ?

Interstitial cystitis Interstitial cystitis — also called painful bladder syndrome — is a chronic condition characterized by a combination of uncomfortable bladder pressure, bladder pain and sometimes pain in your pelvis, which can range from mild burning or discomfort to severe pain. The severity of symptoms caused by interstitial cystitis often fluctuates, and some people may experience periods of remission. Although there's no treatment that reliably eliminates interstitial cystitis, a variety of medications and other therapies offer relief. Interstitial cystitis symptoms include:
A persistent, urgent need to urinate. Frequent urination, often of small amounts, throughout the day
and night. People with severe interstitial cystitis may urinate as often as 60 times a day. Pain in your pelvis (suprapubic) or between the vagina and anus in women or the scrotum and anus in men (perineal). Pelvic pain during sexual intercourse. Men may also experience painful ejaculation. Chronic pelvic pain. No simple treatment exists to eliminate the signs and symptoms of interstitial cystitis, and no one treatment works for everyone. You may need to try various treatments or combinations of treatments before you find an approach that relieves your symptoms.
Lifestyle and home remedies Some people with interstitial cystitis find relief with self-care methods, such as: Dietary changes. Although no scientific evidence points to diet
as the cause of interstitial cystitis, many people with the condition find that eliminating or reducing their intake of potential bladder irritants may help to relieve their discomfort. The most irritating foods can be summarized as the "four Cs." The four Cs include carbonated beverages, caffeine in all forms (including chocolate), citrus products and food containing high concentrations of vitamin C.
Bladder training. These techniques may help reduce urinary frequency. The training involves timed urination — going to the toilet according to the clock rather than waiting for the need to go. You start by urinating at set intervals, such as every half-hour — whether you have to go or not. Then you gradually wait longer between bathroom visits. Bladder training may involve learning to control the urge to urinate by using relaxation techniques, such
as breathing slowly and deeply, or distracting yourself with another activity. These other self-care approaches may help you as well: Wear loose clothing. Avoid belts or clothes that put pressure on your abdomen. Reduce stress. Try methods such as yoga, and lowimpact exercises. Try pelvic floor physiotherapy. Gently stretching and strengthening the pelvic floor muscles, possibly with help from a pelvic floor physiotherapist, may reduce muscle spasms. If you smoke, stop. Smoking may worsen any painful condition, and smoking is harmful to the bladder. If you are concerned that you are showing some symptoms outlined above, contact your G.P. for a consultation. If you would like more information call Garvan at Lynch’s Pharmacy on 4366923.

Dermalogica skincare Centre We believe in the Dermalogica approach to skin care, which emphasizes that only healthy skin is beautiful skin. Therefore all skin conditions are treated by combatting the root of the problem, instead of temporary relief (breakouts, dryness, flakiness, redness, ageing). Every facial treatment begins with the Dermalogica Face Mapping procedure, whereby our therapist determines your particular skin type, and then selects customized treatment. We also offer home care advice, and with our current offer of 20% off all Dermalogica products – it is a chance you should not miss!

All procedures are performed by our highly experienced Consultant Surgeon. We cater for medical beauty treatments and cosmetic procedures which delay and treat the signs of ageing. The procedures include wrinkle and fine line removal (involving a treatment that relaxes the underlying muscles) as well as facial fillers (which are the non-surgical solution to reducing lines and wrinkles, as well as gently correcting facial contours and enhancing lips). To receive full information or to arrange your free consultation please enquire in salon or ring us on (021) 4890333.

Dermalift: the ultimate non-surgical Facelift We offer an affordable alternative to cosmetic surgery, which is suitable for any client with concerns about skin ageing. The Dermalift Non-Surgical Facelift is a very pleasant and relaxing procedure which lasts 60 minutes, during which our therapist uses our Dermalift machine to transmit micro-currents through the skin and facial muscles. The first part of the treatment involves placing pads on the lymph nodes of the face and neck, which helps draw the toxins away from the area and improves blood circulation – resulting in a glowing complexion. The next stage involves hand-held wands which lift and firm facial muscles, while also stimulating collagen and elastin production, keeping the face plump and firm. The procedure is finished with a Dermalogica masque, as well as face, neck and shoulder massage. Results include visible face skin improvement, tightening of sagging muscles, firming of the skin and smoothing of fine lines and wrinkles. For best and long lasting results, a monthly Dermalift Non-Surgical Facelift procedure is recommended. Discounts on a course of treatments are available, please ask in salon for details.

Home & Garden prolong the crop. Sow summer cauliflowers in a frame for transplanting next spring. Finish planting new strawberry beds.
Lawns & Hedges Continue mowing when the lawn is dry, but raise the height of the cutters. It’s a good time to start planing where to put your spring bulbs.. As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Sow hardy annuals in situ or in frames for early blooms next year. Take cuttings of hebes in a cold frame as an insurance against winter losses. Divide and replant winter-flowering Iris unguicularis. Prune weeping standard roses by

Walking Tour of Ballinlough Last Monday night I took part in a Walking Tour of Ballinlough, it was organised by Kieran McCarthy. There was a large turn out. We set off from Ballinlough Pitch & Putt Clutb, into Beaumount Quarry, over to Ravenscourt House, onto Ballinough House (that was formerly Lovetts Restaurant), on to Ardmahon Estate where there is a pre historic standing stone, and made our way on to the Ballinlough Road looking at the history of the market gardens. In 1901 there were 17 Market gardeners in Ballinlough. We finished opposite Pic Du Jer Park, talking about the suburban growth in the 1930s to 1960s. The people that took part in the Tour had a great interest in their area. If Kieran decides to do another Walking Tour, don't miss it. Well done Kieran for giving us all a
lovely and interesting evening. Congratulations Claire you are 'The Belle of Ballinlough' Congratulations to Claire Lehane, representing Patsy's Hair Studio she was selected as The 'Belle of Ballinlough' for the coming year. There were 12 Belles taking part this year, each representing a local business. The Judge had informal interviews with the 'Belles' last Friday week in the Silver Key, so they could get to know the Belles, also to get to know their personality's, and to bring out their good qualities. Congratulations Claire, enjoy your year. Congratulations on the Best Escort Congratulations to Barry Downey on be chosen the 'Best Escort' I heard you really made an impression on the Judges
End of Summer Festival I spent most of last Saturday, at the End of Summer Festival, the Festival has extended way outside of Ballinlough, as I met families from Carrigaline, Rochestown, Douglas, Grange etc, it was a huge success again this year. Sean Kelleher & our own Canon Jim O'Donovan, I would like to congratulate the organisers as it was a wonderful experience
for all the people that attended. Several family members, and friends of the bereaved prayed for the souls of their loved ones.some stayed at the graves while the Mass was been celebrated, there were well over 1,000 people in the cemetery. Again I would like to compliment everyone that was involved in the organising of this lovely Mass.

Young @ Heart
• Congratulations to Sean (Dixies) and May Lucey on reaching your Golden Wedding Anniversary
by Phil Goodman
With autumn upon us our thoughts turn to trying something new, like learning a craft, following up a hobby or gaining a qualification we have always wanted. The “young at heart” provide a wide range of activities and hobbies to suit everybody. Learn to knit or croquet, art, computers for beginners, Tai – Chi, exercise which is beneficial for mind and body, indoor bowling, and social dancing. To date over 200 older people have availed of the free computer classes which are sponsored by the VEC, and the classes in the Douglas community school are sponsored by An Post. Our group meet every Tuesday in the Douglas library. I believe all people especially older people need to have social contact and be part of a social network, “belonging and being involved” attention needs to be paid in particular to those that live alone or are house bound etc. This is the main reason why we will have the “care – ring Douglas” available for
the people who could benefit from this friendly phone service. For more information on this service give me a call on 4363867. I believe strongly that participating in physical, social, and cultural activities is required to ensure that older people remain active and healthy members of society who are capable of making an ongoing contribution to the life of the communities. People require access to a wide range of opportunities and supports in order to do this. The need to recognise and support the rich potential and contribution of older people is a core message in the principle of self fulfilment and making a contribution is vital to self fulfilment, personal identity and self worth. For me “positive aging week” is being treated with respect regardless of your age, seeing more positive images of older people in the media, and fewer negative ones. Being able to enjoy
your age and doing things at your own pace. Listen to older people, “the desire to have a laugh does not diminish with age”. On the 1st of October which is international day of older people come along to the library at 11 AM and test your skills by taking part in “Nintendo Wii lympics”, it promises to be a fun morning. You can also see the display of knitting from our members on the day. We wish a very happy birthday to a lovely lady Mrs Coughlan of Clifton Grange who is celebrating her 92nd birthday.

Rose's vocals haven't really withstood the test of time and his voice was reportedly drowned out by a chorus of boos from the less-than-impressed crowd. Also, due to their tardiness in beginning the performance, curfew laws dictated that the band's set was to be dramatically pruned. Rose then attempted to whip up the disinterested audience into a flurry by encouraging them to complain to festival organisers about Gun N Roses' neutered set. You would imagine that after a PR disaster of such epic proportions Axl would be inclined to put on a hellraiser of a set on the following night in Reading. Nope. This time the band began their set just 30 minutes late but then aimed a profanity-laced insult at festival promoter Melvin Benn, who defended his stance by saying his hands were tied because of the strict noise pollution laws. Blink 182 and LCD Soundsystem directly referenced the Guns N Roses debacle during their sets too, much to the delight of the crowd. On the topic of LCD Soundsystem, James Murphy has said that the famed dance-punk band may record once again. Having previously said that this year's This Is Happening was going to be the last full-length LCD Soundsystem album, Murphy has admitted that there might yet be more to come. "We'll still make some music but playing together is such a Herculean thing because everyone lives in different parts of the world and have lives", said Murphy. "We'll still be making LCD Soundsystem music and stuff; we just need to go back and have it be a part of our lives rather than our whole lives." Make sure to catch LCD Soundsystem if you're lucky enough to have

an Electric Picnic ticket! The moment that Take That fans the world over have been waiting for since 1995 has finally happened. Robbie and Gary are back. But are they back for good? Probably not. Barlow and Williams have unveiled their news music video which is set for inclusion on Robbie's greatest hits album called In and Out of Consciousness and is the first time that the duo have worked together in 15 years. Russian police have detained health and rights awareness activists in Moscow where U2 were playing a concert. Police ejected not only Amnesty International activists but also volunteers from U2's own charity fund, the ONE campaign against the spread of HIV, said a Greenpeace spokesman. Bono had previously had an official meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to discuss the HIV problem. Sergei Nikitin, head of Amnesty International's Russian branch said "I'm very sad about what happened. I do not know if Bono knew about what happened to us, but I fear that he did not." Jay-Z and Kanye West are teaming up to release a collaboration album. Kanye announced the news on his Twitter page: "Me and Jay bout to drop a 5 song album called Watch The Throne." The rappers released a track from the album, Monster, last week as part of Kanye’s Good Friday plan – to release one free track each week between now and Christmas. Monster also features Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, Bon Iver and Charlie Wilson. Watch The Throne is yet to get a release date. Finally this week, 50 Cent is at war with Twitter after the website blocked his Twitpic account. The rapper’s ability to upload photos was taken away after he posted a series of raunchy pics. One showed a woman in a bikini with a hamburger wedged between her buttocks. Fiddy wrote "Y'all like my Kim K burger?" in reference to Kim Kardashian’s shapely

College Corinthians AFC Schoolboys Section Under 11 Ringmahon Rangers 2 Corinthian Boys 5 Corinthians Boys opened their campaign with a confident and determined performance that produce a well deserved win over Ringmahon Rangers. Man of the match, Eoin Davis, opened the scoring with only 3minutes on the clock. That was quickly followed by David O'Sullivan's first goal of the season 5 minutes later. Rangers pulled one back with a retaken penalty after Christen Begley had saved the first attempt. A short time later Ringmahon found an equaliser aginst the run of play. It didn't take long for Corinthians to restore their lead when Eoin Murphy found the net in the
21minute. Second half substitute Joe Duggan was only just on the pitch when he added to the tally to make it four with that coming just after the tip off. The icing on the cake came in the fifty third minute when Dylan Ward netted after a terrific run down the left. Brian Turbull, Ciaran Couch, Alec Chandler & Bryan Hill also put in strong performances Evergreen 1 Corinthian Boys C 6 Goals from Jays Kabia (2), Daniel O'Donovan (2), Daniel Quinlan (2), Mark Cronin and Adam Murphy, helped Corinthians to a great win in their first ever league game. Douglas GAA Senior Football Championship:
Douglas 0-15 Carbery 1-09
On 24th August Douglas, sponsored by Ryan’s SuperValu, overcame the challenge of Carbery to book their place in the quarter final of this year’s senior football championship. The general consensus was that prudent switches, made by the Douglas selectors when the game was in the melting pot, was pivotal to Douglas’ win. Central to this was the scoring contributions of substitutes Thomas Sheehan and Shane McCarthy. A feature of the Douglas performance was the spread of contributors to their final tally of fifteen points. Eight players got on the score sheet led by Mark Harrington who accounted for six points and two from Cormac Dineen. Carbery Rangers provide Douglas’ opposition in the quarter final. Cork Representatives: There were mixed fortunes for Douglas players featuring on Cork teams last weekend. On Saturday evening Mark Harrington captained the Cork in the all-Ireland Intermediate hurling final against Kilkenny. Douglas player Barry Fitzgerald lined out at midfield but unfortunately Cork suffered a seven point defeat. On Sunday David Hanrahan kept goal for the Cork minor footballers in their dramatic all-Ireland semifinal win over Galway. Dave and his team mates now prepare for a final meeting against Tyrone. Douglas Camogie: Congratulations to the Douglas players on their recent victory over Milford in the quarter final of the senior camogie championship. This year the Douglas team is coached by Billy Clarke and following this victory his side now look forward to a semi-final confrontation with Inniscarra or Cloughduv. Fixture: Under 21 “A” hurling Championship Douglas v. Na Piarsaigh (3.00pm in Ballinlough)

For coaching purposes they are split into small sized groups (average ten per group) where they are given plenty of opportunity to participate and enjoy themselves. Later in the year, our Under Six Street Leagues take centre stage and thy are always the highlight of the Underage season in Corinthians, the games are fun filled with the emphasis very much on enjoyment. So if you were born in 2001 / 2002, why not come along, we would love to see you in Corinthians.
Neptune Announce New Signings Ahead of 2010-11 Superleague Campaign Neptune Basketball Club have announced the signing of U.S. power forward Robinson Louisme and former Shamrock Hoops standout Phil Taylor. Louisme is a 6’7 forward out of Fort Myers, Florida, who was signed to replace dominant Neptune big man Juwann James. James signed in France earlier this summer. Louisme followed an outstanding career at NCAA Division One Tulane University (New Orleans) with a very good first professional season in Nuernberger, Germany, where he averaged 11 points and 6 rebounds per game in the very competitive Germany’s Pro B division. As one of six imports on the Nuernberger side, Louisme posted season-highs of 27 points and 13 rebounds last year. Taylor averaged 18.4 points and led the Superleague in three-point shooting with Hoops last season, and gives additional size at 6’4 to the Neptune perimeter. “We are delighted to sign both Robinson and Phil. They are both outstanding players and individuals. They are welcome additions to the Neptune family.
Robinson will be a presence on both ends of the court, while Phil is rated as one of the best scorers in the Superleague. It is important that we drive on the momentum we have within the club, and the addition of the two should be a boost towards our aspirations in the league and Cup”, said Neptune Chairman Pat Lucey Robinson Louisme quotes: “I was very excited to accept the offer to be with Neptune Basketball for the 2010-2011 season. Coach (Pat) Price and I have been talking all through the summer and we actually established our relationship last summer around this time. My goals are to get better as a player and teammate and to follow that, Neptune basketball will get better. Once I made this commitment to come Cork, I made a commitment to new teammates, management and a fan base. I'm very thankful, happy and excited for this opportunity to play with Neptune.” Neptune’s preseason includes hosting BBL side Cheshire Jets on Saturday, September 11 at Neptune Stadium. The following weekend the Cork side will play in the inaugural Stuart Robbins Memorial Tourament at UL Arena, before opening their Superleague season with a home match against Belfast Star on Saturday, October 2nd. Comment of the Week I met Anne, a Dublin lady at the conclusion of the all-Ireland semi-final. She stated “Dublin got the better scores and so deserved to win”. Anne, the team that gets the highest cumulative score (goals and points) wins the game; there is no point crying Sky Blue crocodile tears into your coffee. The game Down through the years Cork footballers have flattered to deceive, frustrating their followers on many occasions. There have been days, particularly in Fitzgerald Stadium and in Croke Park where I have said “never again”. The game against Dublin was hugely frustrating. Basically there is very little hair on my head and I can assure you that after that game there is a lot less. There were Hail Mary shots at goal, the ball was played laterally across the pitch and according to statics there were 144 handpasses. So after this negativity how did we ever manage to win? The introduction of Colm O’Neill proved a positive move. The ball was kicked into the inside line and there the damage was done. Eoin Cadogan tightened up the full back line, Donnacha O’Connor was coolness personified when taking the penalty and Paddy Kelly’s work rate was excellent. But the management erred in starting an obviously unfit Graham Canty The talk on the street indicates that Dublin lost the game through indiscipline, particularly in the final quarter. One has to congratulate Cork – they were five points down with fifteen minutes remaining in a stadium populated mainly by Dubs supporters and was a cauldron of noise. The Rebels were under severe pressure with history weighted against them. Cork’s record against Dublin in championship football is not good. The Leesiders reduced the deficit to a point only to see the Dubs get 32 - Thur 02 Sep '10

the next two scores. The Rebels had to shoot for the summit again and fair dues, they did. Croker I do not agree with the erection of a fence around Hill 16. In my opinion such a move could create more problems than it would solve. Though one can appreciate the Health & Safety points there are only two occasions in the year, the hurling and football all-Ireland final days that such issues arise. In the event of those supporters occupying Hill 16 wishing to cheer their heroes on the pitch I say “why not?” Is Cork capable of winning the all-Ireland? Yes. Will they win? I sincerely hope so. I understand the management does not appreciate criticism but loyalty to players whose form may have dipped is a major mistake. County Championship Douglas achieved a fine victory over Carbery in the senior football championship. Carbery were one of the favourites to win silverware; Douglas had other ideas. The management emptied the subs bench and this proved positively fruitful. Their next opponents are Carbery Rangers who defeated Douglas a few years ago in a relegation game. Everything points to a tough match to come.
