The Word

by George Thompson - Editor

I was at Mondello Park race circuit last weekend for the last round of the Clubmans Championships (motorcycle) with two Cork riders in contention for the 600 and ‘big bike’ titles. In atrocious conditions, the action was fantastic as, believe it or not, many riders go faster in the wet than they do in dry conditions. Sean Hurley from Ballinhassig ensured he did enough to secure the 600 championship, after a crash in the first corner of race one, involving the Cork rider which stopped the race, didn’t deter the Yamaha R6 mounted Hurley as he regained his composure for the restart. Daniel O’Connell from Little Island blew away all competition on his Suzuki GSXR1000 to win his final races by a country mile to win the coveted crown of Irish Clubmans Champion 2010. The 125 class which included riders as young as 13 impressed me most as I watched these young riders race like professionals in torrential rain. Locally, this weekend sees the WCMC annual Hillclimb event move from Roberts Cove to Kinsale on Sunday while the South Western MX group hold a Two Day International Motocross at Brinny near Innishannon on 2/3 October. This event features motocross sidecar racing for the first time in Cork and sideshows at this event will include Vintage Tractors and Custom & Classic Bikes. A fun day out for all the family is guaranteed at this event! What can I add to what’s already been said about Cork’s win over Down in the All Ireland Football Final last Sunday? – apart from well done to all and congratulations from us all at the Douglas Post. While I’m dishing out best wishes I would also like to wish the best of luck to the Douglas Senior Camogie team in their County Semi Final against Inniscarra next Sunday afternoon 26th September at 4pm in Ballincollig. Douglas Lions Club do Trojan work within the community and my good friend Oliver Carroll, who recently took over the chain of office as President of the Douglas Lions, asked me to mention a fundraising coffee morning that takes place at Barry’s of Douglas next Tuesday morning September 28th from 10.15 to 11.30am. If you have time for coffee or are on a coffee break from work, then pop in and say hello and help raise funds for this worthy cause.

What a Wonderful Vet Dear Editor, I read with interest your article re the care that Connor Goold of Goold's Vet Clinic took of your Springer Spaniel after she injured herself recently. We had a similiar experience with our cat, who was very close to death last St. Stephen's Day. We took him to Connor thinking that he would put him to sleep but Connor knew how much we loved our cat and he insisted on treating him with the hope of him making a full recovery, which he did. We had to make a good few visits to Connor over the following weeks and each time he cared for him and kept him overnight to make sure he was ok. Connor and his wonderful staff are totally dedicated to all animals in their care and we are so grateful to him for the care he took of our cat. The Jackson Family, Grange.

Children’s Rights Alliance’s Dear Editor Have you run stories this year that highlight what it is like to be a child in Ireland? The Children’s

Rights Alliance’s ‘Report Card’ series is in its third year, and we will be again highlighting local stories from across Ireland to draw attention to Government failures or successes in the areas of education, health, material wellbeing and safeguarding childhood. See Report Card 2010 here: www.childrensrights.ie/files/ ReportCard10.pdf You will see that we highlight stories from local papers – either in ‘Local Eye’ or in ‘Local Focus’. Local papers in last year’s report were given special access to the relevant sections, and provided with stories to highlight the results on a local level. We are currently searching for stories to include in next year’s Report Card, to be launched on 24 January 2011. If you are aware of any stories, relating to class sizes, budgetary cuts, obesity (the list goes on) etc, then please get back in touch with me by 4 October. If we refer to your story, it will be noted in the Report Card, which is distributed widely throughout the country and we will notify you of its inclusion. Again, inclusion in the Report Card will also provide you with exclusive access to the Report and its grades prior to its embargoed launch. I look forward to hearing from you.

TB crisis Cork Fine Gael TD Deirdre Clune has called for extra resources for Cork’s TB services to get the immunisation programme back on track and remove the current backlog. “A two year waiting list in the Cork area for the BCG vaccine is totally unacceptable. The recent TB outbreak in a Cork primary school resulted in a very high incidence of TB among the school population, because most of these children had not received the BCG vaccine. “Any immunisation policy should be implemented uniformly across the State. Many children in Cork have no protection against TB because, unlike the rest of the country, babies born in Cork were not offered the BCG vaccination for over 30 years. It was only reintroduced in 2008 following TB outbreaks in two Cork crèches. “The publicity surrounding the recent outbreak has prompted many parents to seek the vaccine. However, they have to join a growing waiting list, and two years is a long time in any child’s life. There are at least 2,500 children waiting for the vaccine in Cork, a number which has increased in recent weeks. “Last Monday the long overdue HPV vaccine for cervical cancer was rolled out across Cork city and county. This essential vaccine is being administered in schools by medical staff already responsible for the BCG vaccine. This increased workload will put local staff in an impossible position. These figures don’t add up and children in Cork may be left exposed. “The HSE is trying to deal with the recent Cork outbreak in an emergency situation, but the large backlog in the immunisation programme must be addressed as a matter of urgency. If this requires the Department and the HSE to provide extra resources to remove the backlog and get the immunisation programme back on track, then this is what must be done.”

Minister of State for Overseas Development, Peter Power, launches the Our World Irish Aid Awards at the Children’s Ark. Minister of State for Overseas Development, Peter Power TD, launched the Our World Irish Aid Awards for primary school children in Limerick on Friday September 17th, 2010. The awards scheme encourages children to create multimedia projects which explore the challenges facing communities in the developing world. They are designed to promote awareness and understanding of global development issues and Irish Aid’s work in developing countries. Launching the awards at The Children’s Ark in the Midwest Regional Hospital, Limerick, where he was joined by pupils from The Children’s Ark and Limerick Educate Together National School, Minister Power

said: “These awards encourage pupils to use their imagination and creativity, while learning about important global development issues such as hunger and childhood disease. “More than 15,000 children from 600 primary schools participated in last year’s awards and their projects included art, drama, essays, poetry, film and music. By taking part, pupils can learn more about children less fortunate than themselves and how Ireland works with developing countries in a spirit of partnership. “Next Monday, with Minister Micheál Martin, I will be attending the Millennium Development Goal summit at the United Nations in New York, where the international community will review our progress towards tackling hunger and poverty in the developing world. “This is a key milestone in the global effort to make the world a more equal place for all. The Our World Awards are focused on the Millennium Development Goals and encourage children to learn more about the lives of their peers in the developing world, the challenges they face and the potential solutions. WAITING LISTS INDICATE A HEALTH SERVICE RUN ON A CRISIS MANAGEMENT BASIS The revelation today that over 46,400 adults and children are waiting for hospital treatment, is a clear indication that the management of our healthcare system is becoming more and more dysfunctional. What we now see is a health care service being run purely on a crisis management basis. With A&E services coming under increasing pressure and with local HSE managers being forced to cut hundreds of millions of Euro from their operating budgets, it is hardly a surprise that the job of delivering a well run service takes a back seat. The truth of the matter is that hospital services are running below capacity which means that there is no good reason why patients could not receive treatment when they need it. Earlier this year we learned that €30m worth of hospital beds and facilities are lying idle around the country, because of a failure to newly sanction money to pay for staff. This is a perfect example of the lack of coherence and absence of joined up thinking that is bedevilling our health services. It makes absolutely no sense from a health or an economic point of view to spend substantial amounts of taxpayers’ money on developing these facilities and then leaving them lying idle for want of staff. On the other side, wards and theatres that had been operational are being closed to save money. I am calling on the Minister for Health, Mary Harney, and the HSE to take immediate steps to ensure that all available facilities are brought into service, so that these unacceptably long waiting lists can be addressed.

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn

Every good poem has a life of its own, its peculiar atmosphere, flavour and emotional key. It is the business of every poem to move the reader. Our Poem this week from Martin Swords of the Wicklow Writers Group takes us to one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Martin uses some lovely lyrical verse to glide us over the breathing panoramic view from the Wicklow Gap and its serenely exciting effect on him. Martin tells us that at the weekly meeting of Wicklow Writers Group (look them up on web.) they read our Poetry Corner and wish that more magazines and papers carried similar outlets for Poetry enthusiasts. Thank you Martin and our thanks to all at The Wicklow Writers Group. As I Came Over Wicklow Gap As I came over Wicklow Gap All on a summer’s day A sight I met which held me trapped And took my breath away A view emerged as if to say Stop and remember well today Treasure the memory from this day Before you’re on your way, now Before you’re on your way

As I came over Wicklow Gap All in a summer still The sun shone on the mountain cap A single shaft of golden spill And lit ablaze the very hill I can recall it still If ever my spirit’s ill It lifts my heart and always will, now I know it always will Martin Swords Send your poem to ‘The Poetry Corner’ / Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas or you can email it direct to ronniemcginn@ eircom.net. If possible keep your poem to 20 lines. You may choose any subject you like, in any form you like as long as it’s original. We look forward to hearing from you. RonnieMcGinn

Johnny told his dad where he meant to go. “OK you win” said the relieved parent. “Let’s go” said Johnny. Johnny and his Dad are not going diving, or taking a trip in a glassbottomed boat. So how are they going under the sea without coming to any harm?

BUILDING CONTRACTOR TO BE APPOINTED FOR STAR OF THE SEA NEW SCHOOL BUILDING The long wait for the start of construction on the new school building for Star of the Sea in Passage West is almost over, according to local T.D. for former pupil of the school, Michael McGrath. ‘The Department of Education & Skills has confirmed to me that the process of awarding the construction contract to the successful bidder has commenced following the completion of the tender process. The Department is now ensuring that appropriate insurances, tax clearance certificate and bonds are in place. ‘A formal contract is expected to be signed between the Department and the building contractor very shortly and then construction can commence on site,’ according to Deputy McGrath. Deputy McGrath also confirmed that the construction contract will be for 12 months. The new state of the art school will have 16 classrooms, a general purpose room, PE equipment store, a library and resource area, a multipurpose room; special education tuition rooms, a general office, a teacher and staff room and a principal’s office. ‘The local community has been actively campaigning for the new school for many years. The staff and pupils are currently coping with sub-standard conditions on the existing site but thankfully the end is now in sight and the brand new school will be finally delivered. ‘The project remains on target for completion in 2011 and I will continue to give project every possible support,” Deputy McGrath concluded.

Cllr Kieran McCarthy

What will you see this Friday 24th September? As night falls on Friday, 24th September next, over 60 art and culture venues across Cork will fling open their doors to over 20,000 people for a night of high drama, behind-the-scenes tours and rare performances not to be missed. The official programme for Cork Culture Night 2010 is available for download at www.corkcity.ie/culturenight. There will be hundreds of free events designed to appeal to a wide mix of tastes and interests - from small children, their parents and grandparents to young adults looking for an interactive and energetic way to spend their evening and discover a new side to their home city. The year’s ‘after dark’ programme of activity sees a record number of diverse art and cultural venues putting on an eclectic series of exhibitions, performances, workshops and other unusual activities taking place from early evening through to late night in venues across the city. 2010 sees the welcome return of old favourites such as last year’s booked-out concert performance by the RTÉ Vanburgh Orchestra in the rarely viewed Masonic Hall in Tuckey Street, and an interactive dramatic production at the Lifetime Lab on Lee Road by Red Sandstone Varied Productions. Cllr. Kieran McCarthy is proud to be taking part in the mini-promenade play the River of Imagination at the Lifetime Lab, which runs every 30 minutes on the half hour on the evening of the 24th from 5pm to 9pm.

Depression is one of the most common health conditions in the world. Depression isn't a weakness, nor is it something that you can simply "snap out of." Depression, formally called major depression, is a medical illness that involves the mind and body. It affects how you think and behave and can cause a variety of emotional and physical problems. You may not be able to go about your usual daily activities, and depression may make you feel as if life just isn't worth living anymore. Most health professionals today consider depression a chronic illness that requires long-term treatment, much like diabetes or high blood pressure.

Depression generally isn't an illness that you can treat on your own. But you can do some things for yourself that will build on your treatment plan. In addition to professional treatment, follow these self-care steps for depression: Take your medications as directed. Even if you're feeling well, resist any temptation to skip your medications. If you stop, depression symptoms may come back, and you could also experience withdrawal-like symptoms. Learn about depression. Education about your condition can empower you and motivate you to stick to your treatment plan. Pay attention to warning signs. Work with your doctor to learn what might trigger your depression symptoms. Make a plan so that you know what to do if symptoms return. Contact

your doctor if you notice any changes in symptoms or how you feel. Consider involving family members or friends in watching for warning signs. Get active. Physical activity and exercise have been shown to reduce depression symptoms. Consider walking, jogging, swimming, gardening or taking up another form of exercise you enjoy. Avoid drugs and alcohol. Alcohol and illicit drugs can worsen depression symptoms. If you are showing some of the above symptoms, contact your G.P. for immediate evaluation. If you would like more information on depression, or lifestyle choices to combat depression, contact Garvan at Lynch’s Pharmacy on 4366923.

for no apparent reason, Problems sleeping, Trouble focusing or concentrating, Difficulty making decisions, Unintentional weight gain or loss, Irritability, Restlessness, Being easily annoyed, Feeling fatigued or weak, Feeling worthless, Loss of interest in sex, Thoughts of suicide or suicidal behavior, Unexplained physical problems, such as back pain or headaches. Depression symptoms can vary greatly because different people experience depression in different ways. A 25-year-old man with depression may not have the same symptoms as a 70-yearold man, for instance. For some people, depression symptoms are so severe that it's obvious something isn't right. Others may feel generally miserable or unhappy without really knowing why. It's not known specifically what causes depression. As with many mental illnesses, it's thought that a variety of biochemical, genetic and environmental factors may cause depression.

SHAPE UP LIKE THE STARS We’re all familiar with that guilty feeling after overindulging all summer long; lethargic, bloated, clothes feeling that bit tighter. You’ve only got about 8 weeks to get in shape for that little black dress that you are dying to wear this Christmas! What if there was a workout that could give you over ONE HOUR OF TONING in just 25 minutes without having to commit to a long term membership? Sound too good to be true? The BodySmart workout is based on the Power Plate™ device, which uses gravity to load extra weight onto the body. At BodySmart, we can load your body with up to 6 times your weight, without you having to lift a single bar bell! With no affect on your joints, your muscles and bones strengthen and tone quicker than with any other form of conventional exercise. The people behind Bodysmart know the benefits that the Power Plate can bring and have shaped a 25-minute fully supervised, full body workout around the device, to help you lose weight, tone up and increase flexibility. The BodySmart workout has proven to rejuvenate your metabolism. After just 18 sessions, one clients’ metabolism was measured to be 10 years younger! BodySmart has studios in Dublin, Galway and Naas, and now this fast and truly effective workout is coming to Cork. BodySmart is opening in Douglas this September. With classes starting every half hour throughout the day, Bodysmart allows you to work out at whatever time of day suits best, and see massive results by training for 25 minutes with a personal trainer, just three times a week. This level of individual attention gives you the motivation and is why you will see results in as little as 3 sessions! The personal training is ongoing 20 - Thur 23 Sep '10

with workouts increasing in intensity as your fitness level improves, with different exercises being introduced all the time. Thus the body does not at any stage “adjust” to the BodySmart workout. Your body is challenged at every session, so you will never hit a standstill in terms of results. This modern approach to exercise has been a huge hit with celebrities and models, with singer Alexandra Burke being the latest to pledge allegiance to the Power Plate. Other fans include Jonathan Ross, Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Simon Cowell, Courtney Cox and Dannii Minogue. The Power Plate is also used frequently by high-performing athletes from Premiership soccer teams, the Leinster Rugby squad and golfers such as Phil Mickelson, Mike Weir, and golf guru Dave Pelz. Dave Pelz comments “I’m pleased to report a loss of over 50 pounds, stronger legs, increased flexibility, and feeling better than I have in 20 years. To feel this good without knee pain in my mid-sixties is amazing to me.” Other devices on the market like to call themselves Power Plate, but they aren’t the same. The imitation machines don’t use gravity, they just vibrate and jiggle your flesh around to improve circulation. Only with regular use of the real Power Plate can you dramatically aid weight loss and toning, it will also increase metabolism, improve the appearance of cellulite, muscle and skin tone, and reduce stress. A research project presented to the European Congress on Obesity in May 2009 found that the Power Plate helps users lose twice as much weight and shed twice as much dangerous belly fat as traditional workouts. They discovered that Power Plate, used with a calorie restricted diet, was around 2.7 times more successful at achieving long term weight loss than a diet combined with a normal fitness routine. Imagine personal training for as little as €6 a session! BodySmart is all inclusive – the BodySmart workout caters to any age group and fitness level, including

Home & Garden

Think about a host of golden daffodils in the spring – now is the time to plant bulbs. But don’t stop there . Plant crocus, snowdrops, bluebells, tulips, hyacinths for a beautiful spring garden. As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower Garden Dig up early chrysanthemums, cut down stems and box up the stools; keep in a cold frame until January. Finish bringing in tender perennials, and box or pot up to keep under frost-free glass. Plant new pinks and hardy carnations on light soils - elsewhere wait until spring. Plant new rhododendrons and azaleas in acid soil, and mulch with cocoa shells. Plant container grown shrubs and trees in prepared soil, but leave bareroot plants until next month.

Kitchen Garden Start taking hardwood cuttings of soft fruit such as gooseberries and currants, and root outdoors. Clear outdoor tomato crops or lay plants on straw and cover with cloches to finish ripening. Mix all summer lettuce varieties together with endive, chicory and other salads for sowing as a cut-and-come again mixture. Cover vacant light soil with a

protective layer of manure or compost, or dig and sow a green manure. Earth up winter leeks for extra-long blanched stems. If runner beans are still cropping, feed with general fertiliser

Lawns & Hedges Lay turf on new lawn sites. Spike lawns and scarify with a wire rake or hired machine, if not done already.

Greenhouse Plant parsley in a greenhouse bed or cold frame for winter supplies.. Disbud late-flowering chrysanthemums to stimulate larger blooms. Start to reduce watering and damping down generally, and water in the mornings only. Sow greenhouse radishes to crop in late November.

Water Garden Net ponds to keep falling tree leaves from fouling the water. Continue dividing bog and marginal plants for a week or two - after that wait until spring.

In General Before ordering seeds check through old stocks, retaining the most recent. Test soils with a pH kit,. and make plants to adjust acidity levels where necessary.

THE ALL NEW SWIFT – THE COMPACT SUPERMINI The all-new Swift is Suzuki’s latest world strategic model and makes strong developments in styling, impact safety, driving performance, handling, improved fuel consumption and significantly lower emissions. Extensive use of higher strength steel makes the new bodyshell lighter and stiffer than before as well as offering refinement in underbody design. This latest design has also helped improve impact safety for pedestrians as well as occupants. The New Swift has been awarded a 5 star Euro NCap safety rating. New Swift is even more economical than before with fuel consumption on the combined cycle now 5.0L/100kms for the manual transmission model. Emissions are much lower with the new 1.2-litre engine producing just 116g/km (automatic 129g/km) on the combined cycle. A revised 1.3-litre diesel engine is also available from Spring 2011; this engine emits 109g/km (down from 119g/km) and has an impressive combined fuel consumption of 4.2 L/100km. This Euro 5 engine has more precise engine management than before with reduced levels of mechanical friction for smoother running and flexibility. Suzuki Ireland has not committed to an Irish launch date for the New Swift diesel model. The new Swift is available in three and five door body styles and two clearly defined grades; GL and GLX. All models have ESP and seven airbags as standard equipment including driver’s knee airbag. Commenting on the arrival of the new model, Niall O’Gorman, General Manager, Suzuki Ireland, explains: “The New Swift is a very exciting addition to our product line-up, and we have already received a significant level of interest from both existing and new customers. It promises to be a very encouraging start in what are set to be challenging market conditions.”

In The Loop with Peter Bowles

This week I interviewed two of the live acts playing at Rewind the 90s on the 8th of October in Rochestown Park Hotel, Livin Joy and N-Trance. I began like most interviews talking about how they got started in the music business, Livin Joy explained how it was a simple case of music running thought out the family, getting his break from musical theatre training. N-Trance on the otherhand met at Oldham college where they were studying to become sound Engineers, they got swept up in the rave scene in about 1989 & decided to start making trance music (hence the band name N-Trance). After which we discussed both bands influences, both at the

beginning of their careers and how they evolved into todays inspirations, for N-Trance, the KLF where the biggest influence because they taught them how to make their music famous, but also how to keep ones self anonymous, this was good for them as they’d rather be locked in windowless rooms making music at very high volume levels. Talking of current influences they went on to praise The Prodigy; “We started gigging at the same time as them and it's amazing how massive they have become. We got free VIP tickets off them for a concert in Miami, and they've never forgotten their roots.” Livin Joy had very different

influences, the likes of Karen carpenter and Mary j blidge have always been great influences to Livin Joy and still are along with Ella Fitzgerald. Also saying that she believes Amy Winehouse is up with those guys. Next N-Trance told me how they got their big break; “Having a conversation with the DJ on The Hitman & Her, who then set up a meeting for us with Pete Waterman... who signed us up a week later. We only lasted a year with PWL before we signed to AATW in 1993, and we've been on that label ever since.” A common ground between N-Trance and Livin Joy was found when asked about the highlights of their careers, both listed performing on Top Of The Pops along with performing at the Brit Awards for Livin Joy, also N-Trance added travelling all over the world for free along with getting to number 2 twice in the UK charts. “Looking back it was a fantastic achievement, but at the time we wanted to be number 1. :-) It's sometimes the simplest things that hold the biggest memories like... hearing your song in a club for the first time, hearing it on the radio and

getting in a battered old transit van driving to your first gig.” I continued by asking N-Trance of their plans for the future, they told me that they have a new single out on promo called 'Is This Love (Say Yeah)' and an album ready to be launched combined with a 'best of'. They added that they will be performing the new track live and that version is unique to the set, a treat for the Cork fans. Now down to the important stuff, what did the acts think of the Cork crowds? How did the Irish differ from other audiences. We start with Livin Joy; “I have travelled all over and many times to Ireland with good response, so look forward to visiting cork, they are one of the best audiences to date.” Ah sure they all say that don’t they? At least N-Trance went into a bit more detail; “We played at the City Hall in Cork way back in 1995, so the crowd will probably be full of the kids of the people that watched us back then? We won't be bringing the water guns, as they won't let us take them on planes anymore.... so don't worry, you won't get a soaking. I also remember a

People just want to party more in Ireland and we like to get the crowd bouncing.” Well there’s a band that sound well up for the gig, expect a good show from N-Trance!! Finally, I asked what would they like to say to their fans in Cork; Livin Joy replies with “Are you ready to party?”, how expansive!! While N-Trance leave us feeling very reassured we are in capable and experienced hands; “Just let your hair down, as the more fun the audience is having, the more fun we'll have on stage. We've been doing this for 20yrs, and we'll do it for another 20yrs as it keeps us all feeling young. 'Set You Free' was

College Corinthians AFC Schoolboys Section Under 11 Premier Division Rockmount 0 Corinthian Boys 1 Corinthians maintained their 100% record making it four league wins out of four when they overcame a gallant Rockmount side. Eoin Murphy continued to add to his scoring record when he came up with the winner for Corinthians midway through the second half after a move that was built from the back by an outstanding David Nason. Stephen Fox and Ethan Hurley did very well for Corinthians in midfield while James O'Donovan and James Holland were well in control at the back. Eoin Davis was a constant threat up front ably supported by his strike partner David O'Sulllivan. Under 12 Division 4 - Corinthian Boys

A 2 Buttevant 7 Being very hesitant and the inability to keep possession in crucial areas cost us dearly as we were 3-0 down at half time to a team with much better key players. Rallied well for a period in the second half but Buttevant proved to be stronger overall and never left us back into the game. Cathal Kelleher, Killian Moriarty and Colm Power played well for Corinthians. Scorers for Corinthians were Cian Barry and Colm Power. Under 13 Division 1- Rockmount 0 Corinthian Boys 0 The under 13 Division 1 team played out a nil all draw away to Rockmount on Sunday. The game was played at a hectic pace with both sides giving it their all, in what was a very sporting game. Corinthians will however consider themselves unlucky not to have taken all three points as they dominated the game for long periods and hit the woodwork twice in the second half. Sam Collins was very lively up front and he forced a couple of first class saves from the Rockmount keeper. With Gary Kelleher and Liam O’Sullivan very strong in defence, Corinthians keeper Ger O’Connell

was rarely bothered. Patrick Murphy had a good game in midfield where he was ably assisted by Shane Hurley. Substitutes Richard Cassidy and Simon Lougheed were introduced to liven things up in the second half and they both helped to take the game to the opposition. Corinthians will look to next week’s game with optimism as they are beginning to show a marked improvement on their earlier form as the season progresses. Underage Section Our Underage section which caters for the Under six to Under Ten age Groups will resume on Saturday August 28th with the Under Six’s and Under Seven’s first in action. New members are especially welcome at all age levels. Individual Age Group training times for the new season are as follows, Saturday Under Six ( 2004 / 2005 ) - 12.30pm – 1.45pm Under Seven (2003) - 12.30pm – 1.45pm Under Eight ( 2002 ) – 4.30pm – 5.45pm Under Ten ( 2000) - 2:00pm - 3:15pm Sunday Under Nine ( 2001 ) - 10.00am – 11.30am

Tramore Athletic Football Club Umbro U14 Division 3

Buutevant 1 Tramore Athletic 3

The Tramore Athletic U14s maintained their 100% start to the new league season with a fantastic and fully merited win away to Buttevant on Saturday morning. Buttevant who had also enjoyed a winning start to their season burst out of the traps early in the game and penned Tramore back deep in their own half however typically resolute defending from Olan Murphy and Liam Madden allowed to Tramore to weather the early Buttevant storm and to gradually pass their way into the contest. Tramore were gradually beginning to dominate and were rewarded shortly before half time when Ruairi Moynihan neatly finished from just inside the Buttevant penalty area to give Tramore a one nil lead at half time. Buttevant unsurprisingly tried to replicate their early first half dominance at the beginning of the second period however Tramore were more than a match for their opponents at this point with the confidence of their one nil lead and soon had extended their advantage when Edosie Ogbene and Ryan McCarthy each converted coolly to finish excellent passing movements. Tramore deservedly finished the game as victorious by three goals to one following this excellent team performance lead in particular by man of the match Ruairi Moynihan. The Tramore Athletic Soccertots training camp continues this Sunday morning in Tramore Park from 10am for boys and girls aged 6-10. Learn new football skills in a fun and friendly atmosphere under the watchful supervision of qualified coaches. The Tramore Athletic Management Committee would like to welcome back all members, managers, coaches, players and their families to what hopefully should be another enjoyable and successful season for all associated with Tramore Athletic. Cork Constitution F.C Juvenile Rugby There were a large number of players out in force at the start of our new season which began on Saturday 4th September for the juvenile section of the club, we have all the old faces from last year but many new players started as well which is always great to see. Brian Walsh and Brian Hickey who are the senior team coaches as well as development officers from the Munster Branch from time to time take sessions with the coaches showing them new drills and exercises to introduce into their own training sessions, this ensures that the whole club is working together and helps develop players as they progress from juvenile through to youths and adult rugby. DOUGLAS GAA Douglas players claim all-Ireland medals: Last Sunday Eoin Cadogan and Eoin Cotter brought Celtic Crosses to Douglas following their roles in Cork’s all-Ireland football success. Both players are great role models for the young generation of Douglas players and prior to travelling to Dublin last week they along with Cork minor footballer Dave Hanrahan visited the street leagues to sign autographs and pose for photographs with their fans. On behalf of the Douglas Hurling & Football Club, congratulations to the three lads on their achievements with Cork this year. Fixture: Monday September 27th 2010 Senior Hurling Championship quarter-final Douglas v C.I.T., in Pairc Ui Rinn, 7.30 pm • Douglas GAA- Douglas footballers Eoin Cadogan, Dave Hanrahan & Eoin Cotter who have won medals with Cork this year

Malik Elmusbahi gave the Vale a deserved lead on 17 mins following an excellent turn and cross from David O’Connor. The game was there for the taking and if a second goal had followed soon after it would possibly have knocked the stuffing out of the home team, however, this was not the case and Greenmount got themselves back into the game on 33 minutes when Conor Fitzgerald and John Farrell combined well before the formers cross was finished by the striker. 1-1 when referee Eddie Mullins blew for half time and it was plain to see that either side was capable of taking the 3pts if they applied themselves strongly. The balmy conditions began to take their toll during the second half and on 60 minutes, Mark Hackett and Leonard O’Donovan came off the bench to replace Twomey and McKeon. McCarthy and Elmusbahi both had chances to put the Vale back in front but both shot narrowly wide. The all important third goal of the game went to Greenmount on 70 minutes when veteran
