Great Family Days Out Guaranteed at 2 Day International Motocross This weekend (2nd/3rd October) the South Western Motocross Group will hold a 2 Day International Motocross event at Brinny, near Innishannon. While the action will be riveting on the purpose built course, this event is aimed at providing great family days out with side shows that include a Fun Fair together with Vintage Tractors and Custom & Classic Motorcycles. In all, 150 riders from England, Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Hungary as well as Southern and local riders will take part in all classes from Expert to Youths and will include Evo, Twin Shock, Quads and for the first time in Cork, motocross sidecar racing. Sidecar motocross or Sidecross as it’s more commonly known, is exhilarating and awesome to watch and all riders taking part in this class are looking forward to competing for the first time ever in Cork while treating spectators to this unique and exciting form of motocross. The action begins at 11am on both days and admission is just €5 while Kids enter free! Condolences It was with great sadness that I learned of the untimely passing of Christy Martin at the weekend. Well known and liked as a family, community and business man, I always got on great with Christy who was forever cordial and with a sense of humor to match. Christy put a lot back into the community in terms of sponsorship of local sports clubs and teams and was forever approachable, never forgetting his roots. I would like to offer my sincere condolences and those of the team here at The Post, to Christy’s family and friends. He was one of those decent men, who don’t come along too often and his loss will be sorely missed.

Rights of the Child Dear Editor This week marks the 18th Anniversary of Ireland’s ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Children born on that historic day in 1992 today reach adulthood. Happy Birthday! So did our ratification of the Convention make a difference to their childhoods? In 1992, there was no Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, no Ombudsman for Children, no Dáil na nÓg. Considerable progress has been made in the intervening years. However, 18 years on, many of the principles of the Convention are still not a reality in Ireland. On the two occasions that the UN assessed Ireland’s progress, it provided us with a long ‘to do’ list. Top of this list, I believe, is the need to strengthen children’s rights in the Constitution. All political parties have endorsed the holding of a Children’s Rights Referendum and have even agreed wording; but a date has yet to be set. We call on the Government to celebrate the 18th anniversary by naming a date for a referendum so that children born today will live in a society where their rights are visible and protected by the Constitution. Scope-Rehab Dear Editor As a double above knee amputee for over 40 years now aged 68 still active. I find that my prostheses provider Scope-Rehab located at St. Mary’s Orthopaedic hospital Gurrenabrathar Cork will no longer be allowed to provide me with artificial limbs or carry

out repairs and alteration to my prostheses. It appears the NRH (National Rehabilitation Hospital) have established a strategic alliance with "Ability Matters" a UK based multinational that provides prostheses and orthoses. It would seem that the NRH is instructing the HSE to produce a directive that in future all patients must be seen by an NRH Rehab Consultant, who will only refer patients to "Ability Matters". This will result in the loss of highly skilled prosthetists/orthotists and jobs in Ireland, replacing them with young un-experienced UK graduates. Patients will have no choice as to where they get their prosthesis or orthosis from and it will create a monopoly by a UK based multinational. This will affect patients and consultants' right to choose, a service that is cheaper and more patient friendly. I recently broke a cable on my knee lock I was unable to unlock the knee at 3-30 on a Friday evening I phoned Scope-Rehab and explained my problem they advised me to come straight into the clinic replaced the cable immediately this kind of service will be replaced by a once a fortnight clinic without a workshop and major repairs going to Dublin. There is wide support for Scope-Rehab from plastic and orthopedic surgeons in Cork. If you or a member of your family is unlucky enough to become an amputee this is the kind of service you are going to get Ireland is the only Country in Europe that doesn’t supply amputees with free prostheses. For information on the campaign to keep Scope-Rehab open and providing a first class service for the people of Munster and further afield see our campaign website www.walkon.ie. POSITIVE AGING WEEK SHOULD HIGHLIGHT THE COUNTRY’S PENSION CRISIS IRISH OLDER WOMEN ARE NOT FINANCIALLY PROTECTED FOR OLDER YEARS RESEARCH has shown that only 50% of women in the workforce have a personal private pension and less than one in four women have a pension despite the fact that women generally live longer and thus have a greater need for more funds in their later years. Fine Gael TD, Deirdre Clune has stated that Positive Aging Week should help highlight the female pension crisis in the country. “Interruptions to a woman’s career such as time out to have a family, job sharing while their children are young, as well as the fact that many women decide not to return to paid work after their children are born affects the size of pension at retirement. “According to the CSO, there are 111,640 more widows than widowers in Ireland, which highlights the needs for women to consider seriously putting in place a plan which will pay them dividends when they are older. “In the case of divorce, of which Ireland has approximately 3,400 marriages end in divorce each year, and if there is just one pension the judge will usually order the sharing of that pension as part of the divorce settlement. “In March of this year, a National Pensions Framework was published with a number of key elements including a change to the qualifying age for the state pension from 65 to 66 years of age in 2014 , 67 in 2021 and 68 in 2028. “The State pension will remain the basis of the pension system with the aim of keeping its value at 35% of average earnings. A new supplementary pension scheme will be introduced to provide additional retirement income for employees who are not already in a pension scheme. “There will be matching State and employer contributions. The State contribution will equal 33% tax relief; The same matching State contribution will apply to existing occupational and personal pension schemes and will replace the current system of tax relief; A new pension scheme for new entrants to the public service will take effect.”

TIDY TOWNS COMPETITION RESULTS 2010 By John Fitzgerald We, the committee of Douglas Tidy Towns, have got our results and we have improved over last year, by 10 points or 4%. We note some of the comments of the Judges under “Overall Development”. They wrote “It is very interesting to observe how within a generation Douglas has proceeded from being a residential suburb with an old village at its core to the ‘large urban centre’ that we see today” and “it has become very clear that were it not for the activities of this Committee, Douglas would not be the well regulated place it is now”. These latter remarks were very pleasing indeed – that our almost year-round efforts were noted and complimented. On the “Built Environment” they wrote:

“It is good to find the original village streets still exist though inevitably they are dwarfed by the large shopping malls and office buildings. Individual shops are well presented but there is a considerable amount of commercial signage which tends to give a somewhat untidy appearance as you look down the V”. They had some words of praise – “The back entrance of Tesco is very elegant indeed”. “The Credit Union is a credit to its members” The also had praise for Kamara Interiors and Johnson & Perrott which they described as in their different ways, leaders in style. “The Garda Station is very well presented and St. Columba’s Church is handsomely maintained” “The Church of Ireland church is particularly attractive and well looked after. Several school were seen, all in excellent condition, among them Regina Mundi College”. We need a reinvigorated community including everybody in Douglas to ensure that this wonderful area with its Estuary, Woods, Community Park, Shopping Facilities, Pubs and Restaurants and well kept Village Streets are enhanced for the benefit of generations to come. We meet every Saturday at 10.30 a.m. at the Community Centre. SHARP RISE IN LONG TERM UNEMPLOYED MUST SET ALARM BELLS RINGING Figures in the Quarterly National Household Survey indicating that long term unemployment has increased dramatically in the last 12 months, must set alarm bells ringing at Government level. According to CSO figures, long term unemployment now stands at 5.9 per cent compared to 2.6 per cent in 2009. This is evidence that the government has simply given up on thousands of people who are ready willing and able to work but who cannot find a job, and who are unlikely ever to get work as long as Fianna Fail are in office. Equally alarming are the figures that show that the overall unemployment rate has increased from 12 to 13.6 per cent in the last year, highlighting the abject failure of the Government to come to terms with the jobs crisis that has taken hold of the country in recent years. That is why it is so essential that we see some action from this government. For our part, we in the Labour Party have proposed a series of job creation initiatives including: - A Strategic Investment Bank which would use €2bn from the National Pension Reserve Fund to support commercial investments of up to €20bn in critical infrastructure projects and innovative start-ups and SME. - An SME Working Capital Guarantee Scheme which would ensure that viable small and family businesses can get the loans they need. - A €1.15bn jobs fund to support training schemes and labour intensive capital investment. - A Graduate & Apprentice Programme which would guarantee relevant, work-based training and an opportunity to obtain new qualifications for all young people out of work It is time that Brian Cowen and his colleagues now gave unemployment the priority it deserves. Creating jobs is the key to getting our economy moving again. We need a far more proactive approach by the government who should take on board proposals the Labour Party has made.

Quilts, Pies and Creative Urges I do quilting on a Thursday night in Ballincollig with women of all ages from Junior Cert students struggling with school projects up to hip replacement age. The tea is flowing, every project is gorgeous and the chat is mighty. The standard of some of the projects is astonishing, Ursula, who is German, has a knack for picking out fabrics overlooked by others and transforming the ordinary into heirloom quality which she then donates Chernobyl. I first fell in love with patchwork style quilts when I lived as an Au Pair in Boston and always associated them with New England and Pioneer era America. It never occurred to me to make one until I stumbled upon a quilting workshop in Singapore run by a Swiss lady. My sewing is like my handwriting, large and vulgar like a drunken spider lurching across the fabric: neatness does not come naturally to me. In the beginners class I sat next to a Japanese lady and was humbled by her dainty, even, little stitches. We learned how to make six basic blocks and brought them together to make a baby quilt. My patches were misaligned, my ‘points’ weren’t sharp enough and my borders uneven but I called it my Monet look;

the further back you stand the better the impression. I did it all by hand, machines scare me. When I finished it, I showed it to my boys who at the time were aged 6, 3 and 1. They immediately hugged it. That’s the appeal of patchwork quilts; you can make it as simple or as complex as you like; there is a world of colours to choose from to create a unique work of art; and of course, it’s warm and cuddly hence the instinct to snuggle into it. You know you’ve met a quilter when she fingers the gorgeous, silk skirt you paid a fortune for in a boutique in Midleton and she murmurs how it would make a lovely cushion cover. Quilters tend to have large bottoms and it’s not just because they don’t move much. Tea, sewing and sweet things go naturally together. The Master Quilter, as I call her, lived in the States for 12 years and her children grew up celebrating Thanksgiving. When she returned to live in Cork she kept up the tradition of producing a massive banquet on the third Thursday of November. She makes 12 pies including pecan, key lime, Mississippi Mud pie, apple, pumpkin, lemon meringue and my favourite, black bottom pie which involves crushing

now lovely October. The nights are drawing in, the leaves are swirling, it’s turning chilly but my heart is warm. I have sewing projects lined up until April and of course, November is around the corner. I am aiming to sample all of them this year. I will probably explode into diabetes but they can wrap me up in one of my quilts and throw me into the sea for all I care.

digestive biscuit crumbs, soaking them in rum before folding them into cubes of melted dark chocolate and that’s just the base. She buys the ingredients on the Monday, prepares them on Tuesday, and bakes them on Wednesday to have them ready for Thursday. Her family can only eat so much and on the Friday morning she invites her quilting ladies over for morning tea. My first time was two years ago. When I saw the twelve pies lined up on shelves around the room, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Then I panicked: I had two hours of eating time but it only takes 20 minutes for your stomach to register it’s full. How many pies I would be able to shove in before passing out? I managed five. I was hoping we would get leftovers to take home but the Master Quilter’s teenage son and his rugby team-mates were having their turn that afternoon. Last year, I got wise. I left the crusts on the plate, concentrated on the filling and I got though seven slices. Ursula scolded me for wasting but I ignored her. It’s

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn

All lyric poetry can be described as poetry of personal feeling and as long as poets are individuals, all will be different from one another, and as long as they feel impelled to express their feelings in durable form, there will be lyric poetry. There is no form of art or expression which gives wider range to our thoughts and feelings than lyric poetry, but even with the infinite varieties of form available, it can prove immensely difficult to express ones inner emotions when the object of ones feelings are too close to contemplate. One can only try! Julia Beside the fading fire, I watch your vacant chair, A weight of emptiness, Is hanging everywhere, A quick glance to the kitchen, I half expect to see, You come smiling out, With fresh made scones and tea. But it’s only in my mind, No one’s at the door, Still hard to believe, You’re not here, anymore, And yet within your home Your presence still abounds, Almost like you were here, Making your house rounds. The cold fear that I felt, At your hospital bed, The quite way you smiled, The soft words that you said. The truth is hard to take, As sad tears fill my eyes, But deep down in my heart I know you’ll never die. Still no words can express, The pain your family feels, The loss is far too great For their grief to reveal. Yet, all the love you gave, Was much more than enough, To help us carry on, When the going got tough In our wayward world You stood out strong and tall, The good life that you lived Was God’s gift to us all.. A weight of emptiness, Is hanging everywhere Beside the fading fire, I watch your vacant chair. Ronnie McGinn Send your poem to ‘The Poetry Corner’ / Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas or you can email it direct to ronniemcginn@ eircom.net. If possible keep your poem to 20 lines. You may choose any subject you like, in any form you like as long as it’s original. We look forward to hearing from you. RonnieMcGinn

Non-Surgical Facelift: The Dermalift Treatment An affordable alternative to cosmetic surgery, which is suitable for any client with concerns about skin ageing. The Dermalift Non-Surgical Facelift is a very pleasant and relaxing procedure which lasts 60 minutes, during which the therapist uses the Dermalift machine to transmit micro-currents through the skin and facial muscles. The first part of the treatment involves placing pads on the lymph nodes of the face and neck, which helps draw the toxins away from the area and improves blood circulation – resulting in a glowing complexion. The next stage involves hand-held wands which lift and firm facial muscles, while also stimulating collagen and elastin production, keeping the face plump and firm. The procedure is finished with a Dermalogica masque, as well as face, neck and shoulder massage. Results include visible skin improvement, tightening of sagging muscles, firming of the skin and smoothing of fine lines and wrinkles. For best and long lasting results, a monthly Dermalift Non-Surgical Facelift procedure is recommended. Discounts on a course of treatments are available, please ask in salon for details.

An dtagann ciall le haois riamh? Tá aithne agam ar bheirt deirfiúr go bhfuil déagóirí acu, agus i measc iad seo tá beirt cailíní atá ag freastal ar ollscoileanna éagsúla, duine amháin ag tosú ar a dara bliain ann agus an duine eile ag tosú ar a céad bliain. Beirt cliste atá sna cailíní seo, agus dúil acu beirt i dtoradh a gcuid staidéar, cé go bhfuil barúla difríochta acu ar bhóthair an staidéar agus ar fhiúntas freastal ar an ollscoil. Ní mar a chéile iad, cé gur dlúth-chairde iad agus cé go bhfuil siad lonnaithe i bhfad óna chéile sa dhá ollscoil ar a bhfuil siad ag freastal. An té atá sa dara bhliain tá a cuid staidéar dírithe i mbliana ar na leabhair, na léachta, aistí, taighde agus scaithimh ama fada a chaitheamh i gcéin ag saothrú i gcomhlachtaí éagsúla mar chuid dá cúrsa. Ní amháin go mothaíonn sí brú mór na bliana acadúla seo, ach mothaíonn a máthair an brú céanna – ach tá muinín ag a máthair aisti chun cloí leis an staidéar agus leis an gclár atá leagtha amach ag an ollscoil di. Chomh maith leis sin tiomáineann dúil an chailín seo go mór í mar go dtuigeann sí na deiseanna a bheidh ar fáil sa raon phost a bheidh ar fáil di nuair a bheidh a cúrsa ollscoile déanta aici. Maidir leis an gcailín eile nach bhfuil ach ag tosú san ollscoil, tá fadhbanna aici spéis a léiriú ina gcuid staidéar, dar lena máthair siúd, mar go bhfuil an-craic agus neart páirtithe ann faoi láthair, agus go bhfuil neart cairde nua á dhéanamh, agus go bhfuil na rudaí seo i bhfad níos túisce ná luí isteach sa chlár staidéartha. Tá a máthair trí chéile faoi láthair agus í ag lorg cabhrach chun a chur ina luí ar a hiníon déagóra díriú ar an saol oibre acadúla i dtosach seachas an am tábhachtach seo a chur amú i mbun gach rud eile seachas an staidéar, agus éireoidh leis na máthair sa ‘díospóireacht’ seo. Difríocht eile, atá tábhachtach ó thaobh tuismitheoirí na gcailíní de, is ea cé chomh gairid nó chomh fada ón mbaile dúchais atá na hollscoileanna éagsúla seo. Tá an chéad cailín in árasán le cairde thart ar chéad go leith míle óna mbaile dúchais – agus dar lena máthair ní raibh a hiníon in ann brath ar a mbaile dúchais chun maireachtáil san ollscoil ón gcéad lá. Maidir leis an gcolcheathair, tá sise ina cónaí díreach trasna ón ollscoil ar a bhfuil sí ag freastal, ag is léir go bhfuil sí ag brath go mór ar a mbaile dúchais. Deir an beirt cailín óg nach mar a chéile é freastal ar mheán scoil agus freastal ar ollscoil sa tslí is go gcuireann an meán scoil brú ar an mac léinn nó dalta díriú ar an staidéar agus riaileacha na scoile a choimeád. Níl aon spéis ag údaráis oilte na hollscoile sna rudaí seo – cuireann siad an t-eolas ar fáil agus glacann na mic léinn leis nó ní ghlacann - éiríonn leis na mic léinn sna scrúdaithe nó teipeann orthu. Tuige nach léiríonn údaráis na ollscoile tábhacht na hoibre acadúla agus scéim ar leith faoi a chur i bhfeidhm sa chéad téarma den chéad bliain chun an infheistíocht mór airgid atá á dhéanamh ag mic léinn is a gcuid dtuismitheoirí a chosaint, chomh maith leis na mic léinn nach bhfuil fonn dá laghad acu aon staidéar a dhéanamh a chaitheamh amach, ar mhaithe le mórchuid an phobail mic léinn uile. Maidir leis an mbeirt cailín thuas, éireoidh leo beirt, agus socróidh an duine is nua ar a hollscoil síos go tapa, díreach mar a shocraigh an chéad duine síos. Is beirt cailín den scoth iad beirt, agus maraon lena máithreacha go bhfuil aithne maith agam orthu, tá muinín agam féin sna cailíní freisin Mairfidh an beirt deirfiúr (na máithreacha) freisin, dar liom, cé go dtosóidh an ciorcal céanna i gceann cúpla bliain eile le beirt bhuachaill acu. Nach léir anois go dtagann ciall le haois!

NS is launching its new Green Travel Plan. This policy was initiated by the Cork County Council and aims to raise awareness among the school community to use green modes of transport for the journey to school. As good alternatives to the private car, there are five different strands to the plan. In the window of the school building in Heron’s Wood, colourful posters motivate to “Go green” and “Come along on Walking Wednesday” or “Cycling Friday”. They invite to “Park & Stride”, “Be cool – Car-Pool to School!” and encourage to “Take the Bus – It’s here for Us!” CETNS is also hoping to be included in the local school bus route and to start up a walking-bus in the near future. With the launch of the Green Travel Plan, the primary school hopes to motivate 40-60% of its members to use green transport for the school-run. Any initiatives in relation to green travelling are welcome and encouraged. To start up, on Monday CETNS held an Information Day for parents and students. A stall informed about green travel modes, with maps, cycling information from Rothar, Bus Eireann timetables, and a brochure for each family. People could sign

On Tuesday from 9-12, the school had a visit from the “Bike Doctor”, courtesy of Rothar Cycles. Students and parents of CETNS brought their bike and helmet to school for a free safety check and tune-up. Rothar also plans to organise cycle training for safe cycling at CETNS. BACK TO WORK ENTERPRISE ALLOWANCE AN ATTRACTIVE OPTION FOR MANY UNEMPLOYED PEOPLE Michael McGrath, a Cork South Central Fianna Fáil T.D. and Vice Chairperson of the Oireachtas Finance Committee, has encouraged people currently on social welfare, including jobseeker’s payments, to consider applying for the Back to Work Enterprise Allowance (Self Employed) scheme. ‘The scheme is designed to encourage people receiving certain social welfare payments to become self-employed. ‘Successful applicants under the scheme will be allowed to keep 100% of their weekly social welfare payment for the 1st year and 75% for the 2nd year. In general, participants will also keep their secondary benefits, including fuel allowance, medical card, back to school clothing & footwear allowance etc. ‘The business that you intend to set up must be approved in advance by a job facilitator employed by the Department of Social Protection. In addition, financial assistance can be provided to cover the cost of advertising your new business and towards the purchase of necessary equipment etc.’ added Deputy McGrath. ‘The Back to Work Enterprise Allowance (Self Employed) scheme is an attractive one for many people currently in receipt of social welfare. If you have ever considered setting up your own business, this scheme is designed to help you,’ concluded Deputy McGrath. Further information is available on www.welfare.ie or at your local social welfare office. Alternatively, please give me a call at 021 4376699 and I will discuss the scheme with you.

As a one stop style solution Blush carries a fantastic array of labels while also diversifying into presenting everything a girl might need to boost her fashion consciousness and presence. Here you’ll find good Italian lines by James Lakeland, Sila Murt, Penny Black, I Blues and D-Exterior along with those by Zorbe, to say nothing of trousers by Rosner, lines from Signal and fashions by One Step and Filles des Slables. Distinctively to Blush however the very latest and most exciting Street One fashions, which prices range from 50 euro, can be seen to arrive every Thursday. In addition to a plethora of other styles and product lines Blush is achieving a deserved reputation as stockist of a Dannii Minogue mainstay. The Australian star is known to be an admirer of the Emu boot. Says Dannii, “In Australia, your uggs are your slippers. Mine are by EMU. They’re so soft, like the Rolls Royce of uggs.” The array of styles and affordability in the EMU range demands a visit to Blush. Along with previously mentioned product lines the Blush shopper will find a plentiful variety of other labels and makes. A new line of day footwear by Blowfish looks affordably toward girls from fourteen to fifty. No Man’s Land, Nice Things, evening and occasional wear by Kate Cooper, are distinctive and important additions while jewelry by Obi, Karen Ravelli, BiBi, Ellen Pearls and Orla Murphy are all to found here alongside a funky range of bags and shoes by Lollipop. Arthritis is inflammation of one or more of your joints, such as one or both knees or wrists, or a part of your spinal column. The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Joint pain and stiffness are the main symptoms of arthritis. Symptoms The most common signs and symptoms of arthritis involve the joints. Depending on the type of arthritis you have, your joint symptoms may include: Pain, Stiffness, Swelling, Redness, Decreased range of motion Causes The pain associated with arthritis is caused by joint damage. Joints are made up of the following parts: Cartilage. A hard, but slick, coating on the ends of bones, cartilage allows bones of the joint to slide smoothly over each other. Joint capsule. This tough membrane encloses all the joint parts. Synovium. This thin membrane lines the joint capsule and secretes synovial fluid, which lubricates the joint. How arthritis damages joints The two main types of arthritis damage joints in different ways.

Osteoarthritis. In osteoarthritis, wear-andtear damage to cartilage can result in bone grinding directly on bone, which causes pain and restricted movement. This wear and tear can occur over many years, or it can be hastened by a joint injury or infection. Rheumatoid arthritis. In rheumatoid arthritis, the body's immune system attacks joints and inflames the synovium, causing swelling, redness and pain. The disease can eventually destroy cartilage and bone within the joint. Treatments Arthritis treatment focuses on relieving symptoms and improving joint function. You may need to try several different treatments, or combinations of treatments, before you determine what works best for you. Medications The medications used to treat arthritis vary, depending on the type of arthritis. Commonly used arthritis medications include: Analgesics, Counterirritants, Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), Diseasemodifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), Biologics and Corticosteroids. Therapy Physical therapy can be helpful for some types of arthritis. Exercises can improve range of motion and strengthen the muscles surrounding joints. In some cases, splints or braces may be warranted.

“In the gardens leaves are turning. Bright leaves whirl about the square. Along the windy street they dance. A festal touch is in the air….Up the walls and round the sills in City Street and country lane – Autumn hangs her glowing garlands as the creepers fade again.” As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower Garden Move established peonies very

carefully by the end of the month. Start taking hardwood cuttings of roses, and root in a sheltered bed. Lift dahlias as soon as the foliage blackens; cut down the stems, and stand upside down indoors to drain for a fortnight. Collect ripe seeds from perennials, dry and store. Prepare new rose beds, digging and weeding the ground thoroughly and adding plenty of manure or compost.

Kitchen Garden Finish lifting all potato crops; dry and store. Spread straw or fleece over root crops such as carrots and swedes left in the ground. Finish planting out spring cabbage

Home & Garden - the rest can safely be left until February. Make sure enough manure is on order for vegetable cropping plans.

Lawns and Hedges Rake leaves promptly from lawns or mow and collect with a rotary mower.

Greenhouse Put tender fuchsias to bed for the winter strip off all leaves, and pack in boxes of compost. Pot up divisions of dicentra, astilbes, lily of the valley, and other spring plants for early flowers under glass. Check heaters are working efficiently and stock up on fuel. Test heater thermostats according to temperature regime: 40C (400F) frost-fee, 70C (450F)

cool, 100C (500F} temperate. Bring in pots of freesias started in July. Finish opening melons by exposing fruits to the sun and keeping plants slightly dry.

Water Garden Install pond heaters, or float tennis balls or polystyrene pieces to relieve ice pressure on liners.

In General Move frost-shy container plants under cover and insulate others with sacking or bubble polythene. Start raking leaves and stack or pack into black plastic bags to decay into leafmould. Construct raised beds for fussy plants and vegetables, or where drainage is poor, and leave all winter to settle.

COBH HERITAGE CENTRE LOOKS EAST FOR NEW TOURISM BUSINESS Pictured at the Know Asia Grow Asia tourism event which took place in Dublin’s Westbury Hotel this week are DEBBIE WALSH (second from left) and TRACEY ROCHE, COBH HERITAGE CENTRE (right); with Geraldine Egan, Tourism Ireland (left); and guest speaker Ahmad Younis, Joint Arab Chamber of Commerce. The seminar was organised by Tourism Ireland to help enterprises from around the island of Ireland understand and engage with these tourism markets of the future in Asia. Attendees – who included hoteliers, bed and breakfast operators, car hire companies and visitor attractions – heard a series of presentations on China, India, Japan and the Middle East and the various opportunities these emerging tourism markets present. Industry experts already working in these markets provided insights into what the Asian customer is looking for, as well as practical advice and tips about how to work more effectively with the travel trade in Asia and ultimately to grow business from these markets. Jim Paul, Tourism Ireland’s Head of Australia and Developing Markets, said: “The World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) forecasts that the Asian-Pacific region is set to become one of the fastest-growing markets for outbound travel over the next ten years, with up to onethird of total world tourism coming from this region by 2020. The Tourism Ireland event today provides our tourism industry partners with a greater understanding of the various markets in Asia and will help them as they plan for 2011 to evaluate the opportunities and platforms for growing business from these markets.” Jim Paul added.

Jobs must be at the centre of a new confidence-building economic strategy. Cork Fine Gael Senator Jerry Buttimer has today Monday said “Job creation must be the number one priority as the new Oireachtas term begins. Jobs must be at the centre of a new confidence-building economic strategy.” “Polls, polls and more polls is all we read and heard about last week. People of Cork want action, hope and houses of Oireachtas that are accountable. Job creation must be the number one priority as the new Oireachtas term begins. “The jobs crisis is acutely affecting our young generation. It is important that collectively politicians tackle the big issue of job creation collectively. Fine Gael believe in using the National Pension Reserve Fund, private pension funds and sales of non strategic state assets to accelerate the investments in high speed broadband, clean energy and water needed to make Ireland a better place to do business and to create jobs; industry to expand services and increase tourist numbers; providing partial loan guarantee for small and medium sized enterprises; publishing an action plan for implementing the recommendations of the National Competitiveness Council and the Competition Authority in order to drive down costs in the economy;Slashing unnecessary red tape for small businesses; Providing second chance education and traineeship positions for unemployed young people; and Encouraging entrepreneurship by overhauling our outdated bankruptcy laws. People want jobs & economic security.

Young @ Heart by Phil Goodman

Last year thousands of older people campaigned successfully against cuts to the state pension, but now the state pension and associated supports are again under threat in the forthcoming budget. Today’s older people not only supported their parents generation but also provided for the education and health needs of those of working age today and older people continue to contribute. These contributions have enormous value; in the first week of November join people join people across the country and pay a visit to your local T.D let them know why you want them to defend the state pension. You may also sign the Young at Heart petition which will be forwarded to the Taoiseach requesting no cuts directly or indirect in the forthcoming budget. Remember this is an issue that affects everyone, the state pension protects 84% of older people aged between 64-75 and 89% of these over 75 against risk of poverty, we should demand a long term commitment to a fair and secure pension for all. On Thursday and Friday of this week celebrating positive aging

week. Young at Heart Knitters will display their beautiful hand knitted garments, hats, scarf’s, knee blankets, soft toys, baby outfits and much more in Douglas Village Shopping Centre. If anyone would like to visit the knitting and stitching show in R.D.S on the 28th- 29th of October where you can meet stitching and craft experts, maybe learn a new skill, buy from suppliers at the lowest prices, give me a call on 4363867. We now have a couples celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary this year in conjunction with Douglas Village Shopping Centre who plan to celebrate this magnificent achievement with you; any more Golden couples get in touch, also leave names at information desk in Shopping Centre.

In The Loop with Peter Bowles

Only a week to go to Rewind the 90s at Rochestown Park Hotel featuring Livin Joy, 5ive and N-Trance. This week we’re giving away another pair of tickets, all you have to do is email your funniest 90s TV moment to peteintheloop@gmail.com. Special congratulations are in order this week for local man Darren Sheehan a.k.a. Dashka. Dashka and Matteo DiMarr collaborated a house track called “Blower”, which has been released on the new Hed Kandi album “World Series: Lodon”. More Cork related music news now and murphy’s Little Big Nights Out have announced CORK ROCKS!, an axe grinding rock-tastic extravaganza, which will take place at The Savoy on Saturday October 9th. In the

continuing Murphy’s mission to celebrate all that is just great about Cork, they bring you and your mates the one and only, Cork rock legends The Sultans of Ping, with support from the equally raucous Hope Is Noise and the suitably riotous Rulers of the Planet. All in all, a line-up of Cork rock talent that would make Ozzy blush! So even if your formerly glorious head-banging hair has thinned a little and the mosh-pit seems somewhat daunting, nab your tickets for CORK ROCKS!, abandon the jumpers at the door, grab a cool creamy pint of Murphy’s and have the best craic with the lads on this Roctober night! This will be the first appearance by the Sultans in over two years, before they hit the road in December for a nationwide

jaunt. Sharing the stage on the night will be Cork- based Hope Is Noise, who have been busy touring their heavy trademark hooks since their debut album release in 2009. Also rocking Cork on October 9th will be Cork’s own Rulers of the Planets, renowned for their electric hard-edged guitars and riotous celebration of psychotic girlfriends! Like all the best things in life, Cork Rocks! is free but tickets are limited, so apply early by logging on to www. littlebignightsout.com and while you’re there, sign up for event alerts for the rest of the Little Big Nights Out series, coming to pubs, clubs and venues on your doorstep throughout 2010! International news now and Katy Perry may have been axed from Sesame Street, but the star is now set to make a cameo on cartoon series The Simpsons. The California Gurls hitmaker, who was dropped from the the hit children’s TV show for wearing a low-cut dress, will reportedly be turned yellow for a one-off appearance in the animated show to air in the US on 5th December. Perry will join Homer Simpson and Co as the girlfriend of local bartender Moe, and will also lead the cast in a Christmas sing-a-

long spoof of Xmas carol The 12 Days of Christmas. The Simpson’s executive producer, Al Jean, revealed, “In the wake of Elmo’s terrible betrayal, The Simpsons puppets wish to announce they stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Katy Perry.” Katy is said to have recorded her scenes for the show a few weeks ago and will join the likes of Michael Jackson, Sir. Paul McCartney and her fiance, Russell Brand - who landed a part in the cartoon back in June. Meanwhile, in retaliation to her Sesame Street axe, the I Kissed A Girl singer has since appeared on US TV show, Saturday Night Live, dressed in an Elmo t-shirt - which was slashed to the chest to expose even more of her infamous cleavage.

Place a large bowl/basin onto weighing scales, and add the following ingredients: 1.5 lbs of course wholemeal flour add one handful of wheat bran add two handfuls of wheat germ add pinhead oatmeal up to 21/4 lbs on scales add 2 tsp salt add 2 tsp of sieved bread soda (bicarb) mix dry ingredients well add 1 litre of buttermilk & stir until the buttermilk is mixed through all the dry ingredients divide into 2 greased bread tins & sprinkle with pinhead oatmeal bake for 1 hour on high shelf

College Corinthians AFC Schoolboys Section Under 11 Premier Division Corinthian Boys 2 Carrigaline Utd. 0 This game was considered an important top of the table clash between two good footballing sides and it certainly lived up to its billing. Corinthians competed well in all areas of the pitch to gain their fifth straight win of the season courtesy of goals from Bryan Hill (20minutes) and Eoin Davis (40minutes). Goalkeeper Christian Begley and centre backs, James O'Donovan and Ciaran Couch were solid at the back to ensure the bonus of another clean sheet. Central midfield of Stephen Fox and Eoin Murphy distributed the ball well to bring both full backs, David Nason and James Holland into the game, and linked well with strikers Eoin Davis and David O'Sullivan. Dylan Ward, Ethan Hurley, Brian Turnbull, Joe Duggan and John Weir also played well for Corinthians. Division 5 Wilton A 1 Corinthian Boys C 6 A very good team performance against a competitive Wilton Utd. team ended in a 6-1 away victory. 2 goals from an excellent Daniel Quinlan and one each from Conor Russell, Cian Morgan, Daniel O’Donovan and a superb strike from Conor Fagan. Wilton started very well and camped in Corinthians half for the opening period winning a number of corners. Solid defending from Adam and Jason Murphy in the centre as well as Padraig Nash and Cian Jones along with Cuchulain in goal. Corinthians gradually took control of the game and after good work from Mark Cronin, Alan Kelleher and Harry Dean, deservedly took the lead and adding a second just before half time. The second half was well controlled by Corinthians with Harvey Cummins and Mark Fitzgibbon playing well.

DOUGLAS GAA Michael Quirke Tournament: Last Sunday afternoon Douglas G.A.A. Club hosted the under 11 hurling tournament held annually in memory of the late Michael Quirke. During the 1970’s and 1980’s Michael was held in high esteem for the work conducted by him on behalf of the street leagues and under-age divisions. Several years ago, the Quirke family kindly donated a cup to be played annually in Michael Quirke’s memory to reflect his love for hurling and his involvement with the underage division of the Douglas Hurling & Football Club. After a great day’s hurling Douglas defeated Youghal in the final to win this year’s tournament while Douglas also won the plate final after defeating Ballygarvan. Prizes were presented by Cork senior footballer Eoin Cotter, Mrs. Sheila Quirke and Jack Quirke. The standard of hurling was a joy to watch with outstanding performances by many players. If this group of Douglas players can stay together they will be a very serious outfit in years to come. Many thanks to all who helped to organise a very enjoyable day and especially to the parents who baked delicious cakes and sandwiches ! Douglas Camogie: 30 - Thur 30 Sep '10

Douglas Hall Underage by Finbarr Buckley U-11 Division One Douglas Hall 2; Tramore Ath. 0 Two fine saves by Hall keeper Patrick McSweeney kept the scores level at half-time. The hosts dominated the second-half and were rewarded with goals by Cathal Kenny and Ryan Hunter to seal all three points. McSweeney and the impressive Dylan Kelly did well for the winners. U-11 Division One Bandon 3; Douglas Hall 4 The visitors went two behind inside the opening seven minutes and trailed 3-1 at half-time. Goals by sub Fiachra Nolan (2) and Mark Gallagher tuned the game in Hall’s favour to go top of the table. A spirited all-out attacking display saw Stephen Sharpe, the outstanding Charlie McCarthy and ‘man-of-the-match’ David Harrington excel. U-11 National Cup Corinthian Boys B 0; Douglas Hall 6 The Hall ran out comfortable winners courtesy of goals from Ryan Hunter (5), strike partner Mark Gallagher (3), , Robert O’Regan (2) and one apiece by debutant Ryan Coleman and Joe Coughlan. U-12 Premier Douglas Hall 2; Ballincollig 3 For the third match in a row, the Hall lost by a single goal, despite dominating the early exchanges. Danny O’Sullivan’s excellent cross was fired in by Darren Hourihan to level the scores in the first half. The visitors went two in front before Brian Flahive pulled a goal back. Best for the Hall were O’Sullivan, Patrick Lee, Andrew O’Brien & Daithi O’Regan. U-12 Division Six Douglas Hall A 0 ; Youghal Utd. 1 The Hall were desperately unlucky not to get something from the match, having hit the woodwork three times in the second-half. Kevin McCabe, Padraig Hickey, Deccie O’Donovan and captain Cathal Fanning never stopped running throughout. U-13 Division One Douglas Hall 2; Leeside 4 Leeside took an early two goal lead before Oliver O'Sullivan pulled one back just before the break. Leeside scored again to leave the Hall with a mountain to climb. Conor O'Regan reduced arrears with a trademark dribble from his own defence but Leeside closed out the game with another goal soon after. Best for the Hall were Eoghan O'Leary and Donnacha Murphy. U-13 Friendly Douglas Hall A 7; Carrigaline Utd. 3 In an entertaining contest between the local rivals, the Hall’s marksmen were Brian Stockle, Paul O’Regan & Kevin Burke all with two apiece, with Conor O’Leary completing the scoring. Best for the winners were David Fox, John Boylan, Tony O’Donoghue and Paul McCarthy. U-15 Division Two Douglas Hall 2; Kilreen Celtic 1 Hall debutants Ebhain O’Mahony, Adam O’Regan and Stephen Cronin contributed handsomely to a hard-earned second win in three. Cronin fired in the opener from O’Mahony’s cross on five minutes, before scoring a superb second five minutes before half-time, volleying past Ryan Anderson from the edge of the area. Colm Sheehan reduced arrears from the penalty-spot for the visitors in the 50th minute. Hall’s outstanding defenders Colin Downey & Alan Buckley were ably assisted by O’Mahony, O’Regan, Cronin, Paul Lehane and Kieran Allanby. U-16 Division Two Rathcoole Rovers 3; Douglas Hall A 2 Tony Dold & Colm Drinan’s charges made the long trip to Rathcoole and came close to beating the home team in an entertaining contest. Tramore Athletic AFC Umbro U13 Division 2 Glounthaune United 0 Tramore Athletic 0 The Tramore Athletic U13s dug-out a hugely creditable nil all draw away to Glounthaune United on Sunday morning. This excellent away result for Tramore was built on the solid foundation of a resolute and well organised defence and also the ability to maintain possession for long periods negating the threats of a very attack minded Glounthaune United side. Although the match finished scoreless both sides created chances aplenty with only good goalkeeping and defending on both sides keeping the scoreline blank. Tramore's standout performers on the day were Edozie Ogbene, Pierce O'Keeffe and Craig Coughlan. The Tramore Athletic Soccertots training camp continues this Sunday morning in Tramore Park from 10am for boys and girls aged 6-10. Learn new football skills in a fun and friendly atmosphere under the watchful supervision of qualified coaches.
