The Word
by George Thompson - Editor
Weather While the weather is changing and getting into winter mode, with shorter daylight hours and dampness in the air, overall it’s pretty mild with temperatures a little higher than normal leading to a lot of colds and flu around now, but at least we can get out and enjoy the fresh air while the sun shines.
Motocross Last weekend I spent a couple of days at Brinny for the 2 Day International Motocross organised by the South Western MotoX Group. Well organised, the course and facilities were fantastic. This was a family event both from a spectator and rider point of view, with races for expert, over 40s and youths and quad bikes. It was amazing to kids as young as 8 and 9, stand amongst grown men as they listened to instructions at the riders briefing and organising themselves and their bikes for racing. Some of the veterans of the sport including Jonny Buckley and George Radley certainly showed the younger riders how to do the business as they diced for the lead in their class. All in all a well organised event, providing a great grass roots arena for talent within the sport of motocross.

Jack L at The East Village One of my favourite artistes on the music scene is Jack L who made a return to a sold out east Village last weekend. Once again the gig was a polished Jack L performance with a mix of the newer material with the classics, leaving everyone satisfied while I’m sure there are a lot of new Jack L fans after the Douglas venue which has also featured other top line acts such as Aslan, The Coronas as well as some X Factor stars.
Computers I work with computers so much that they have become a way of life and very much, in this business, a part of our daily routine. When they go wrong it can be a disaster and fortunately here at The Post we have Neil Murphy of Active Computer Repairs as our ‘Man Friday’ to get us back up and running when things go wrong. Neil advertises in our directory and I can’t recommend him highly enough for all your computer needs.
Road Safety
• Cork Senior Footballer, Nicholas Murphy pictured with the Sam Maguire Cup, with the proprietors of the Carrigaline Court Hotel, Barry & Peter Collins at a lunch to celebrate Cork winning the All Ireland Football Final. (Picture: Adrian O’Herlihy)
On a safety note I would encourage motorists to light up for the conditions specially in the mornings, in rain and in fog. I regularly come across motorists using no lights whatsoever in these conditions, making it impossible to see them and everyone, a potential accident. Remembering 75 Years Dear Editor, I write to mark the 75th anniversary this week of the laying of the foundation stone of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Ballinlough. The Church since its inception has provided a central focus for the Ballinlough community and is part of the roots, amongst other cultural assets, of the strong sense of confidence, identity and place that prevails in Ballinlough. For the record, the solemn blessing of the site and laying of the foundation stone was led by Bishop Daniel Cohalan, Bishop of Cork on Sunday 6 October 1935. On the Cork Examiner the following Monday morning a number of pages were allocated with pictures and a full write-up of the event (available in local studies section, Central Cork City Library). In his address to the congregation, Bishop Cohalan noted that in his younger days, he remembered the district around Ballnlough Road and Boreenmanna Road as largely devoted to market gardening but it had grown into a popular residential area and the necessity for a church was “heavily” felt he noted “not only for the convenience of the people of the area but also to relieve the strain on the limited accommodation of the Parish Church”. Initially Our Lady of Lourdes Church was to serve as a chapel of ease to St. Michael’s Parish Church, Blackrock but Ballinlough became its own parish in time. The original plan for Our Lady of Lourdes Church in 1935 was to provide seating accommodation for 700 people. The church was to have a mortuary chapel and two sacristies attached. By the laying of the foundation stone, already over £1,000 had been expended on the construction work and fundraising had been driven by
Canon William P. Murphy, the parish priest of Blackrock. Canon Murphy had amassed a large amount of fundraising experience in his church career serving in Douglas, Courceys, Dunmanway, Ballydehob, the Fever Hospital in Cork City, Mayfield and at St. Raphael's Asylum for the Blind, Cork City. The foundation stone of the new Ballinlough Church was blessed and marked on each side with the sign of the cross by Bishop Cohalan. The litany of saints was recited and Fr. J.O’Brien, Dean of Residence of University College Cork, was the chanter. The stone was placed in position by the Bishop using a silver trowel presented to him by the builders. The Bishop, preceded by the clergy and acolytes, then walked in procession around the Church foundation, blessing it with holy water as he proceeded. The ceremony concluded with the singing of “Veni Creator” by the choir. After the Bishop’s address, the ceremonies ended with the singing of “Hail Queen of Heaven” by those present, accompanied by the band of Greenmount School, under the Mr. A.P. O’Toole. The foundation stone, which is on view to the public outside the church has the following inscription, “A.M.D.G., in honour of Our Lady of Lourdes. The foundation stone of this church was laid on 6th October, 1935 by Most Rev. Dr. Cohalan, Bishop of Cork; Very Rev. William Canon Murphy, P.P., Messrs. Ryan and Fitzgibbon, architects; Messrs Coveney Bros. Builders.” With deep respect, Cllr Kieran McCarthy

Senator, Jerry Buttimer
After 10 weeks off, next week’s Seanad schedule is a joke No legislation to be debated on 2 day Seanad agenda Fine Gael Senator Jerry Buttimer today (Friday) said the decision to schedule Seanad sittings for two days, instead of three, next week is hugely insulting to the people at a time when the country is on its knees. ”We have only just returned from a lengthy ten week break and after just one week back, a decision has been taken for the Seanad not to sit until next Wednesday. It’s an absolute joke. “This means we will have a six day break from when we adjourned yesterday until we reconvene next week. What a slap in the face when there are 450,000 people on the dole queues, ship loads of our best and brightest leaving for foreign shores and a bank bailout of close to €50 billion tied lie a noose around the nation’s neck. “But it gets worse. For the two days we are sitting next week, no legislation whatsoever is scheduled to be debated before the Upper House. It is Government’s responsibility to schedule legislation and the failure to do so is an absolute disgrace. “Senators were told that the Seanad would be sitting three days per week. Whether or not the Government has Bills ready to come before the Upper House, we should be sitting a full week regardless. “This move sends out entirely the wrong message to the people. It is simply not good enough. Our job is to work on behalf of the people, not to take days off here and there whenever the mood takes us. We desperately need a new style of politics that will recognise the needs of the country and set about addressing them without delay.”

forgotten snowbound village in Central Russia. The hospital at Ivanovskoye in the Kostroma oblast, which gives the last shelter to the old and infirm, is in such a dreadful state that the Government wants to shut it down, condemning the patients to the prospect of a slow and painful death. Last winter, the only ambulance was withdrawn and with no other way to bring them to hospital, there were several cases of old people being found dead in their beds weeks after they had succumbed to the freezing conditions and left with nothing to eat. Doctors in the area have been forced to walk up to 20 km. a day to visit their patients. For tickets please contact 087 2270126 Limited Availability

Tat for Sale Some years ago, I looked for a book that would give me hints on how to save money. I was directed to the ‘Self Enrichment’ section of the shop and found ‘The Idiot’s guide to saving for people in their 20’s and 30’s’. Being 39, I felt I qualified to browse through it. It told me how after World War II the marketing of consumables took off in earnest and to this day we are bombarded with messages, ‘You deserve this gorgeous watch and you deserve it now’ and ‘why wait, have it now’. These messages are so relentless and insidious we bought the message wholesale and they became integral to our self esteem. None of this was new to me but the book goes on to say if you look at houses 100 years old or more none of them had in-built storage. Most people had only two sets of clothes, one set for Sunday and one set of working clothes, and therefore most homes would only have a single free standing wardrobe in a bedroom or a dresser in the kitchen. You certainly didn’t have garages just used for storage and filled with ‘stuff’. I can hardly move in my house I have so much tat. I would love to hire a skip and have a big clear-out or better still a garage sale. My eyesore is someone else’s treasure. In my previous life, I was a magpie. If it’s bright and shiny I want it and I take it even when I don’t need it. I am especially bad with books. Last Sunday, my sister in law offered me a thriller which she just finished and said was fantastic. Inside the front cover were several rave reviews. I currently have three books on the go; I read one or the other depending on how quickly I want to fall asleep. My husband pointed out that thrillers make me nervous. Embarrassed I said loftily, “I don’t know what genre I like really,” to which he replied, “You like reading about other people’s lives and how the sun shines out of your arse self-help books.” The internal magpie won out and I took it. I’ll start reading it tonight and keep the light on all night. In my defence, I believe all good books should be out there circulating and spreading the love and so if I like a book, I immediately pass it on. If I don’t, I write it off as a loss and add it to the pile of tat.

I shall drink his unsubdued rage but not be drowned. I – shan’t — want — time — to — stop. But woe is the minute I meet the blasphemer. An iontas atá acu ná cé chomh sábhálta is atá sé, is cuma cá háit ina bhfuil tú, bualadh amach chun siúil, agus nach bhfuil aon dhainséar ann nuair a théann an ghrian faoi. “Ní féidir linn dul amach ar siúlóid go háitiúil dár dteach cónaithe fiú nuair a théann an ghrian faoi mar go bhfuil seans ionsaí nó robáil ann. Níl taithí ag duine ar bith ar an nós álainn sláintiúil seo san áit ina bhfuil cónaí ormsa sna Stáit Aontaithe”, a dúirt cuairteoir amháin liom a tháinig amach ar siúlóid linn mórthimpeall ar na Carraige Dhubha oíche le déanaí. Rud eile a chuir iontas uirthi le linn na siúlóide céanna. “Ní fhaca mé riamh líon na ndaoine amach ag spaisteoireacht i dteannta lena gclann uile, mar aon lena madra, agus ní fhaca riamh c’e chomh minic is a labhraíonn gach dúile lena chéile, fiú mura bhfuil ann ach beannacht”, a dúirt sí. Dúirt sí nach dtarlódh sinn riamh ina mbaile dúchais agus cheap sí dá dtarlódh sé go mbeadh feabhas nach mór ar modh maireachtála agus ar mheoin an phobail ann. Ní fheadair an dtuigimid cé chomh maith is atá cúrsaí againn? Cé go bhfuil cuid dár gcúrsaí eacnamaíochta go dona, nó faoi bhrú againn – cruachás chun easnamh ollmhór airgid na seirbhís Stáit a líonadh, chomh maith le córas bainc na tíre a cheansú agus a fheabhsú – tá neart rudaí eile sa tír go breá, dar liom. Ós ag caint ar chúrsaí eacnamaíochta dom, chuir píosa eolais amháin iontas an domhain orm le déanaí – gur theip ar 170 bainc ar fud na Stáit Aontaithe! Samhlaigh seo agus ansin chuir i gcomhthéacs na tíre seo é - anseo tá fadhb uafásach againn le trí tithe airgeadais, agus níl teipthe orthu (fós) cé go bhfuil luach ár bhfuil curtha isteach iontu. Níorbh iad seo na n-ábhar conspóide is tábhachtaí a chuir isteach chomh mór ar an gcuairteoir seo is a chuir nósanna muintir na hÉireann ar an siúlóid is ar an spaisteoireacht. Tá an t-ádh dearg orainn sa tír, dar liom agus cé go bhfuil neart deacrachtaí ann nó gnéithe éagsúla d’ár gcóras maireachtála gur féidir linn a fheabhsú, cuireann rudaí beaga simplí dár gnáth nósanna iontas ar ár gcuairteoirí! Gur fada buan seo! Ó Móráin

TIME FOR GOVERNMENT TO ABOLISH AIR TRAVEL TAX As an island nation, low cost air access is essential to our ability to attract tourists and we must therefore remove or significantly reduce barriers to access such as the air travel tax. Studies from our European neighbours suggest that such taxes have a negative effect on an economy as the money raised by the tax is more than offset by the fall in tourism revenues. The Netherlands, Greece and Spain have all removed departure taxes after realising the negative impacts on passenger numbers, airlines and public finances. Even the Government’s own consultative group on tourism, The Tourism Renewal Group, strongly urged that the air travel tax should be removed. The Labour Party first called for the abolition or significant reduction of the air travel tax when we launched our policy document ‘Extending the Welcome’ in May of this year. Recent reported remarks from Tourism Minister Mary Hanafin that she believes that the air travel tax should be scrapped, and that she will try to persuade the Minister for Finance to do away with it, while welcome, is not the decisive action the beleaguered tourism industry needs. If the right policies are pursued, tourism has the potential to play a crucial role in our recovery through sustaining jobs and businesses across the country. In what is an increasingly competitive global tourism marketplace, the Government must act now to remove this barrier to access in order to sustain and grow our vital tourism industry.

Men and elderly people are more vulnerable to mouth, head and neck cancer OCTOBER is instantly recognisable as the month extra efforts are made to raise awareness of cancer, most especially breast cancer. For the past number of years the Irish Cancer Society has carried out some very successful campaigns which have helped highlight the necessity of breast screening and regular checks. Advances have been made in research and care provision and, thankfully, more is now known about the disease. In light of these successful campaigns, it is therefore appropriate that the Irish Cancer Society launched their latest awareness campaign for mouth, head and neck cancer last Wednesday, on the eve of the campaigning month. I was very honoured to be invited to launch the campaign in Cork at the Cork University Dental School & Hospital. Mouth, head and neck cancer is a diseases which is increasingly claiming the lives of many of our neighbours and friends. It is the sixth most common cancer worldwide and is closely linked with smoking and drinking. The disease is most common in men and older people, however women and people of all ages are also at risk. The disease is relatively unknown thus people often don’t contact their dentist or doctor until it is at an advanced stage. It can affect you lips, gums, cheeks tongue, salivary glands, sinuses and even your voice box to mention but a few. It is imperative that if you have any of the symptoms of the cancer, get it checked out as early as possible. It could save your life. Symptoms include; a persistent sore or mouth ulcer, white or red patches inside the mouth, a lump in the mouth or neck, thickening or hardening of the cheek or tongue, difficulty chewing, swallowing or moving the tongue, numbness of the tongue or face, persistent sore throata, hoarseness, nose bleeds and a stuffy nose or unexplained loose teeth. The National Cancer helpline is Freefone 1800 200 700 and anyone who is concerned should contact this number to speak with a specialist nurse.

Fantastic Girls Only Weekend in aid of Action Breast Cancer Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Weekend at the Celtic Ross Hotel In aid of Action Breast Cancer The third annual Girls Just Wanna Have Fun weekend in aid of Action Breast Cancer took place at the Celtic Ross Hotel in West Cork last weekend. Now in its third year the weekend was attended by almost 150 women, many who have been personally affected by breast cancer. Helen Wycherley Owner of the Celtic Ross Hotel explained “The weekend was fantastic. Women attended with their daughters,
their friends, their sisters and had an amazing weekend spending fun time together. Activities during the weekend included Breast Cancer real life experiences, a self defense lesson, Wine Tasting, Style Tips, Salsa dancing, Pilates, Aqua Aerobics, Yoga and a Mini Facial in the Holistic Suite. On the more serious side of things, the weekend, which takes place during Action Breast Cancer Month, raises money for the free services that Action Breast Cancer offer to women with concerns about breast cancer, those who have developed breast cancer and also breast cancer research. Caoilfhionn Collins, a breast cancer survivor talked to the women about being breast aware. On Sunday morning all the women departed with pink bags full of goodies. The weekend was so successful that many women, on checking out of the hotel, booked in for

Smith provides the first full account of the enigmatic Edward Bransfield from Cork and chronicles the little known stories of Corkmen, Patrick Keohane, Robert Forde and the colourful McCarthy brothers on different expeditions to the ice. Cork City Ballet In association with the Cork Opera House Presents - Swan Lake Choreography: Alan Foley & Yuri Demakov after Petipa/Ivanov If you've never seen "Swan Lake”, now's the time! Cork City Ballet is back, and the company's first full length production of this ballet lays claim to a legacy that extends back to its premiere at the Bolshoi Theatre in 1895. But even if you think you know "Swan Lake”, arguably the world's most beloved ballet, few in Ireland will be familiar with CCB’s new version, which features six male swans in a corps de ballet of eighteen dancers. Speaking at the recent launch of the company’s production, Artistic Director Alan Foley said: “unlike the unalloyed tragedy most people cherish, this version ends with a fairy-tale twist. I and Yuri Demakov have re-produced the original Petipa/Ivanov choreography where the prince destroys the evil sorcerer Rothbart, and is joyfully reunited with the Swan Queen”. Cork City Ballet’s new production promises to be spectacular, from the opulent costumes to the alluring sets, especially the opening scene's gold-tinged, tree-framed park in the shadow of the great castle and lake. All the well-loved elements are still in place including the “white acts”, with the famous cygnets dance for four girls; the exquisite white swan pas de deux; and the Act 3 climactic Black Swan pas de deux complete with thirty two fouettes. But the most surprising thrill is in the corps de ballet where Foley and Demakov have used the male soloists to great effect including a new version of the big swans dance performed by men. They display impressive technical facility and stylistic cohesion, and seem to breathe as one, dancing as if the music is in their bones. Swan Lake opens at the Cork Opera House on Wednesday 24th November at 8pm until Saturday 27th November, with a matinee on Saturday at 2.30pm, and concludes with a special Gala performance on Saturday evening at 8pm.

Food allergy Food allergy is an immune system reaction that occurs soon after eating a certain food. Even a tiny amount of the allergy-causing food can trigger signs and symptoms such as digestive problems, hives or swollen airways. In some people, a food allergy can cause severe symptoms or even a life-threatening reaction known as anaphylaxis.
Symptoms For some people, an allergic reaction to a particular food may be uncomfortable but not severe. Food allergy symptoms usually develop within a few minutes to an hour after eating the offending food.
The most common food allergy symptoms include: Tingling in the mouth, hives, itching or eczema, swelling of the lips, face, tongue and throat, or other parts of the body, wheezing, nasal congestion or trouble breathing, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting.
Anaphylaxis In some people, a food allergy can trigger a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. This can cause life-threatening symptoms.
Causes In a true food allergy, your immune system mistakenly identifies a specific food or a substance in food as a harmful substance. Your immune system triggers cells to release antibodies known as immunoglobulin E
(IgE) antibodies to fight the culprit food or food substance (the allergen). The next time you eat even the smallest amount of that food, the IgE antibodies sense it and signal your immune system to release a chemical called histamine, as well as other chemicals, into your bloodstream. These chemicals cause a range of allergic signs and symptoms. They are responsible for causing allergic responses that include dripping nose, itchy eyes, dry throat, rashes and hives, nausea, diarrhea, labored breathing, and even anaphylactic shock.
Tests and diagnosis The following may help determine if you have a true food allergy, rather than a food intolerance, food poisoning or some other condition.
Food diary. Keep a food diary of your eating habits, symptoms and medications to pinpoint the problem. Elimination diet. This process can help link symptoms to specific foods. However, this isn't a foolproof method. Skin test. A skin prick test can determine your reaction to particular foods. Blood test. A blood test can measure your immune system's response to particular foods by checking the amount of allergy-type antibodies in your bloodstream, known as immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies. If you are worried that you may have a food allergy, call Garvan at Lynch’s pharmacy to make an appointment for our food allergy test.

CARE ring Douglas begins the service on Monday 11th Oct from 1-4 and will operate from Douglas community centre , the service will provide a friendly social phone call for older people living in Frankfield ,Grange, Donnybrook, Rochestown, and Douglas. The service will be two –fold firstly to provide social contact secondly to have a conversation. The caring model is simple, innovative and has been designed to be implemented within the community. The form of social contact is not of an intrusive nature. Indeed it is welcomed by the participants. Supported by volunteers who under went extensive training by the HSE. All volunteers under go Garda vetting. This service is a link for people who are unable to leave their homes, also for people who may feel lonely and isolated especially in winter. We will also provide information on all services within the community. For me personally i saw a need in our community for such a service. It gives me great pleasure to see my vision realised. For more information regarding this free and confidential service or to enquire about an application form just contact me on 4363867. With the cold weather and dark evenings fast approaching its time
to pull out our woollies. Coldness can lead to an increase in chest infections and other health problems. “Don’t forget your flu injection this month". Remember food is fuel - it helps to keep you warm, have at least one hot meal a day, and have hot drinks throughout the day and one before bed time. Keep stocked up on basic food for the days when you maybe unable to get out to the shops or not feel like cooking. Keep your house warm and move about as much as you can. Do a little gentle exercise every day to help strengthen the bones. When not used regularly muscles can become weak and flabby. Exercise allows you to have more energy more balance and much more. My sincere thanks to everyone for their kind words and support on the untimely death of my brother Christy; it is at times like this we treasure family and friends.

Flower Garden Finish lifting and drying summerflowering bulbs for storage. Finish planting al spring bulbs by the end of the month, except tulips, best planted in November. Dig up lilies for moving and propagation, and replant immediately. Buy container grown perennials, keep in the cold frame, and divide or take cuttings next Spring.
Kitchen Garden Start digging spare ground on heavy soils, leaving the surface rough and exposed to frost. Cover remaining self-blanching celery with fleece, or tuck straw between plants. Plant garlic cloves in a prepared bed: or in pots in the cold frame if soil conditions
am unsuitable. Transplant lettuces sown last month, toe cold frame or greenhouse border.
Lawns & Hedges Continue cutting lawns if growth warrants this, with the blades set at their highest; brush off dew first on damp days.
Greenhouse Light smoke cones under glass to kill insect pests - choose a kind that may be used while plants are in situ. Sow alpine strawberries in 180C (650F), and plant out in Spring for a full crop next year. Box up dahlia tubers in slightly moist old compost, and keep frost-free. In cold districts be prepared to insulate greenhouses
and cover frames. If grapes are still ripening, remove some leaves to admit sunlight, keep the air dry and provide heat for late varieties. Isolate diseased plants undergoing treatment to avoid infection. Plant freesias in pots for flowers to cut in spring.
Water Garden
gunnera with a mulch of bark or leaves, held down with netting. Thin out oxygenating plants, and add to the compost heap.
In General Tree seeds have limited viability - sow fresh in pots outdoors and expose to frost

Garden Competition
Our Summer Gardening Competition has come to an end for this year. We would like to thank all those who submitted entries, congratulate all the winners and our condolences to those who didn’t make it this time. But there’s always next year! In spite of our harsh Spring the standard this year was exceedingly high, and trying to choose a winner each week was a very difficult task and there were many worthy entries that time simply ran out on, but rest assured; in today’s climate every gardener is a winner.

NEW MERCEDES-BENZ CLS CARVES WAY FOR RETURN OF THE BIG CAR Big cars are back with sales of large luxury models predicted to rise in the years ahead. That is the view being taken by the Mercedes-Benz organisation in Ireland as they prepare for the introduction of their new four-door CLS coupe a model that their sales manager Ciaran Allen says will be a ‘forerunner for change’ when it arrives here early next year. Thanks to new technology that reduces fuel consumption and cuts exhaust emissions, public attitude towards large cars is changing as they begin to rival small family saloons in terms of their environmental acceptability. One example of this is seen in Mercedes-Benz’s own BlueEFFICIENCY. Already available in C and E-Class models, it will

feature across the new CLS range. In the case of the entry-level, 4-cylinder 250 CDI model which will account for two-thirds of all CLS sales in Ireland - a low 139 CO2 rating will pitch it into the Band B road tax category of EUR156 per annum. Similarly, in the higher-powered 350CDI replacement for the former 320 version - a CO2 rating of 159 positions it in Band D with road tax of just EUR447 per annum. Commenting, Ciaran Allen said ‘In the year in which they celebrate the invention by Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler of the world’s first motor cars, the development of methods that lower emissions and reduce fuel consumption are seen by Mercedes-Benz as important steps in guaranteeing the future of the motor car for the next 125 years at least.’

MCGRATH WELCOMES START OF WORK ON CYSTIC FIBROSIS DAY CARE UNIT AT CUH Cork South Central Fianna Fáil T.D. Michael McGrath has welcomed the start of construction work on the new Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Day Care Unit at Cork University Hospital (CUH). The works are set to take four months with the new CF Day Unit due to open in February 2011. Deputy McGrath paid tribute to all those involved in the Build 4 Life campaign, ‘The voluntary effort by all those involved in the Build 4 Life campaign has been second to none. The commencement of construction work on the Day Care Unit in CUH is testament to their commitment and determination to achieve improved facilities for CF patients in Cork and Kerry. ‘I know that the Day Care Unit is part 1 of an ambitious plan which will see the development of a 10 + 1 single en-suite in-patient bedroom CF hospital ward at CUH. I would like to complement the HSE and the Build 4 Life campaign on the progress they have made towards the objective of having modern facilities for CF patients at CUH. ‘I look forward to seeing the new Day Care Unit open next spring and to further developments for CF patients in the months and years ahead. Given that Ireland has the highest incidence of CF per capita in the world, it is essential we continue to invest in facilities for CF patients that meet international standards,’ concluded Deputy McGrath.

Aloys Fleischmann to return to Secondary School Classrooms through unique education booklet Aloys Fleischmann is without doubt one of the most important figures in music in Ireland in the last century and as part of his centenary celebrations, Cork City Council have launched a unique Education Pack in honour of Aloys Fleischmann called “Meet the Professor” The Education Pack “Meet the Professor” has been compiled by Michelle Finnerty, Lecturer in Music at School of Music and Theatre, UCC. "Cultural experience is a key part of children’s lives’ and the education system plays a central role in fostering this experience in Ireland. This pack which brings one of the principal cultural figures of the Twentieth Century back to the classroom is designed in a teacher friendly and cross-curricular manner to make it relevant to teachers and students. It also provides teachers with an opportunity to enhance the cultural experience for children in Ireland through engagement with Professor Fleischmann's story” said Michelle Finnerty The aim of “Meet the Professor” is to introduce teachers and students in secondary schools to Fleischmann’s significant work and legacy. The Education Pack will be distributed to all secondary schools in Cork City and is of particular relevance to students studying Music and Civic, Social and Political Education (CSPE). “Education lay at the heart of Fleischmann’s ambitions for music in Cork. This programme continues this work by engaging with students both as lovers of music and as active cultural citizens” said Valerie O’Sullivan, Director of Services in Cork City Council. “Meet the Professor” provides students with biographical information on Aloys Fleischmann and his remarkable career. It highlights his early years in Cork, his time as Professor of Music in University College Cork and his remarkable contribution to musical life in Cork and beyond. The Education Pack allows Fleischmann the Educator to return to the Classroom and the worksheets and copies of original documents contained in the pack are designed to encourage students to engage with aspects of Fleischmann’s story that may be linked to the Junior Certificate Curriculum including history, social inclusion and music. To reflect Fleischmann’s life as a German Immigrant growing up in Cork in the early 20th century, the worksheets are in English and in German. The accompanying CD provides material that gives a valuable insight into the diverse musical work which Fleischmann was involved in as a composer, researcher, organiser and educator and gives students an opportunity to hear music which Fleischmann composed including Clare’s Dragoons, Bata na bPlanndála and Song for a Festive Occasion. 26 - Thur 07 Oct '10

Get your FREE tickets online at Murphys.com The Magic Numbers are to go on an Irish tour following the release of their third album 'The Runaway' in July, The Magic numbers have announced a series of Irish dates for December. Having already announced a date a Cork's Pavilion theatre for the 3rd, the double brother/sister combo will now also play Killarney's INEC on December 2nd, Galway's Roisin Dubh on December 4th, Whelan's in Dublin on December 5th and Belfast's Spring and Airbrake on Tuesday December 7th. Support for the whole tour will be provided by Dry The River. Tickets for the Whelan's show go on sale this Thursday 7th October at 9am priced €21.50. In other news now David Bowie is set to release a new book, the first in a series, featuring images from his own personal archive. The announcement came from Bowie's official website, www.davidbowie. com, last week, after the news leaked out. Entitled 'Bowie: Object', the book is described as "a collection of pieces from the Bowie archive, wherein, for the first time, fans and all those interested in popular culture will have the opportunity to understand more about the Bowie creative process and his impact on modern popular music." 'Bowie: Object' will reportedly feature photographs of 100 items that give an insight into the musical icon's life, while Bowie has himself contributed "insightful, witty and personal" notes on each. Designed by Barnbrook, the book will be released in a number of different colours, though a release date has yet to be announced. Finally now, In the run up to the release of his still officially untitled fifth album, Kanye West has had no trouble keeping himself in the news. From his highly amusing twitter antics to his attempts to make amends with Taylor Swift, there's been a new Kanye story every five minutes since announcing the record back in June. First it was called 'good ass job' and due in September, then it was pushed back to November and rumoured to be called 'Dark Twisted Fantasy'. Kanye's been collaborating with a vast array of stars from every genre imaginable, releasing a new track every week as part of his 'G.O.O.D. Fridays' series, a series of free songs including collaborations with Beyonce and Mos Def. Kanye decided to cancel the series after music from the album leaked online last week, but for some reason still released new song 'Christian Dior Denim Flow' for fans on Friday. On Saturday, Kanye appeared on Saturday Night Live, performing his song 'Power' which clearly derides the show with the line "F**k SNL and the whole cast". Having then dithered about perhaps delaying the album again, the

rapper has now announced via Twitter that it will still be released in the UK on November 22nd. "We gone kill it again on November 22nd! Even with the leaks…" he tweeted. The album will likely be released on Friday November 19th here in Ireland, and will feature the following leaked collaboration with Bon Iver, which samples his 'For Emma Forever Ago' track 'Woods'.

College Corinthians AFC Schoolboys Section Under 11 Division 1 Corinthian Boys A 3 Tramore Ath. 2 Corinthians turned in a great all round team performance to secure all three points despite a late rally from a physical Tramore outfit. The performance was built on a composed disciplined display from Sean Grace and Captain Brian Hartnett in central Midfield. Both boys battled early to claim midfield for Corinthians. Their effort allowed Cillian Desmond on the left and David Harrington on the right to probe Tramore’s flanks with telling effect creating early chances for Patrick O’Callaghan an Mathew McAuliffe respectively. It was in fact the ever industrious Desmond who struck the first at the second time of asking. Within 8 minutes a series of neat passes involving the two central midfielders and Mathew McAuliffe set up O’Callaghan who struck a thunderous left footed volley high into the roof of the net. With two the good Corinthians appeared to be coasting in the second half stringing series
after series of passes together frustrating Tramore. Corinthians were raiding down both wings with ease, O’Callaghan was producing a Man of the Match performance high on the left using blistering pace to deliver a series of fine crosses none of which were finished. It was in fact from the right that Corinthians third would come after great individual effort from David Harrington saw the ball crossed for McAuliffe to side foot into the net. Corinthians were now well in control now and despite conceding 2 breakaway goals finished out the stronger. Under 12 Premier Division Mallow Utd. Corinthian Boys This was a third consecutive draw for Corinthians in the league against a good Mallow side. As in previous encounters Corinthians have gone ahead but to leave their opponents to score within five minutes. Harry Shanahan scored the two goals for the visitors and was very impressive up fornt. Dean Swords and Daniel Cullen also had great games for the blue and whites Under 13 Division 1 Lakewood 0 Corinthian Boys 2 The U13 Division 1 team enjoyed a hard earned victory away to Lakewood on Saturday. Lakewood started strongly and Corinthians were forced to defend for most of the first
quarter. Full backs Simon Lougheed and Liam O’Sullivan were in great form however, and the Corinthian’s goal was rarely threatened. Corinthians gradually got into the game, with Sean Powter and Dara Baldwin getting on top in midfield. Richard Cassidy scored after 20 minutes when he connected with a well weighted cross from Sam Collins. Dara Baldwin made it 0 – 2 after 40 minutes with a great shot from the edge of the penalty area. Adam Geaney worked tirelessly throughout and Gary Kelleher was very solid in defence.

Grangevale AFC St. Michael’s Cup 2nd Round Greemount 1 – Grangevale 4 The Vale travelled to Curraheen on Saturday knowing that a positive result was vital to regain the confidence that had been badly damaged by the recent run of poor form and results. Greenmount got the better of the lads in the league two weeks ago on a 3-1 scoreline so this game was not going to be easy. However, when the 90 minutes were up on Saturday afternoon, the only disappointment was the fact that only 4 goals were scored such was the dominance of the Vale throughout this tie. Gary Ahern started between the sticks with Ken O’Connell, Dave Burke, Leonard O’Donovan and Colin McKeon making up the back four. Damien O’Callaghan, John Harris, Shane Kennedy and Malik Elmusbahi formed the midfield with Mark Hackett and Dave O’Connor up front. A better start could not have been wished for with Elmusbahi’s curling shot beating the home keeper all ends up after only 90 seconds play. Recently, The Vale have been guilty of failing to hold onto a lead and this curse struck again on 7 minutes when the Greenmount central midfielder rose unopposed to head home from a 30 yard free kick. This gave Greenmount hope but it also spurred Grangevale back into action and 12 minutes later, Dave O’Connor scored his first goal for the club with a cheeky chip over the Greenmount keeper. Grangevale were now playing some of the best football seen by the team this season and Mark Hackett also scored his first for the club on 28 minutes. It was 4-1 three minutes later when Elmusbahi scored his second of the game with a neat finish from close range. The second half saw no more goals from either side. Elmusbahi had a great chance to complete his hat trick from the penalty spot but the Greenmount keeper saved well. O’Connor, O’Callaghan and Alan McCarthy all came close but failed to finish and it remained 4-1 until full time. This was a good tonic for the lads and they can now look forward to the quarterfinal draw. Numbers 9-14-28 Next Sunday, Grangevale will travel to Millstreet One winner €700euro for a Munster Junior Cup clash with Milstreet Next week’s jackpot €400euro. Celtic. by Finbarr Buckley U-12 Premier Lakewood Athletic 3; Douglas Hall 1 Despite dominating early on, the Hall fell three behind before Daragh Kelly linked up with Darren Hourihan who notched his second goal of the season. Gavin McSweeney and Shane Murphy shone in defence, with Darragh Kelly and captain Danny O’Sullivan to the fore in midfield. Hourihan grafted hard up front for the visitors. U-13 Division One Douglas Hall 0 Rockmount 2 A vastly under strength Hall team went down two-nil to an excellent Rockmount side at Moneygourney in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off. The hosts contested every ball but just lacked the firepower to break down the visitors defence. Cian Marnane, Fionn O'Connor and David Barry shone through for the home team on the day. Senior Hurling Championship Douglas, sponsored by Ryan’s SuperValu, saw their senior hurling championship campaign grind to a halt at Pairc uí Chaoimh last Sunday when semi-final opponents Glen Rovers stayed on course to record their first title win in twenty one years. Having completed a devastating extratime victory over C.I.T. on the previous Monday night, it was notable that it took Douglas longer to settle by which time the Glen had opened up a five point lead. In the second quarter Douglas began to dominate possession. Eoin Cadogan struck over some great long range frees and only a brilliant save denied Mark Collins a goal in the twenty second minute. In fairness to the Glen they played with confidence throughout the field and were very efficient in attack. Substitutes Colin O’Mahony and Cormac Dineen reignited the Douglas challenge while Odhrán Mulrooney goaled to close the gap further. However, the Glen prevailed on a scoreline of 1-17 to 1-12 and best wishes to them in the county final. From a Douglas perspective great progress has been made since reclaiming senior hurling status. Team manager Pat Duffy along with selectors Jim Barry, John Barry, John Collins and Ollie Tobin prepared the team diligently all season and the players responded affirmatively. Many of the team are dual players and now their focus turns to the senior football championship, as Douglas face a quarter final • Douglas captain Frank Tobin in a race for possession against Glen Rovers clash with Carbery Rangers on Saturday 9th October at 3.30pm in Bandon. Minor Hurling Championship: Last Friday night Douglas advanced in the minor hurling championship thanks to a clinical display in overcoming the challenge of Erin’s Own. James O’Mahony, Brian Cuthbert and Seán Fogarty featured prominently in the first half while Alan Cadogan was outstanding in the Douglas attack. Despite benefiting from a two point interval lead, on the changeover the Douglas selectors moved full back Seán Collins to centre half forward and this bore fruit immediately as Collins’ pointed. Martin Barry also thundered into the game at midfield and his long delivery resulted in a brilliant Paul Beale goal. Erins Own applied pressure to the end but goal keeper Eoin Dolan and his defence closed ranks to secure the Douglas win. Table Quiz: Douglas dual star Ray Keating has organised a table quiz for Friday October 8th in aid of Temple Street Children’s Hospital. Start time is 8.30pm in the club pavilion and entry fee is 40 euro for a team of four. This is for a great cause and Ray would greatly appreciate your support on the night.

Neptune Win Superleague Season Opener Tramore Athletic AFC Umbro U14 Division 3 Tramore Athletic 3 Kinsale 0 The Tramore Athletic U14s maintained their 100% start to the league season with a fully deserved three goal victory against Kinsale at Tramore Park on Saturday morning. Tramore began the game brightly and were dominating possession in the opening period however Tramore’s momentum and fluidity was severely disrupted when key midfielder Ruairi Moynihan was stretched off with an injury. Tramore could not regain their early domination of possession and territory for the remainder of the half with Kinsale coming right into the game creating a couple of decent chances however the teams correctly when in level at half time. The half time team talk did Tramore a power of good because they began the second half as impressively as the first except on this occasion they maintained their excellent early play and more importantly they registered their superiority on the scoreboard with three well worked goals. Dylan Black bagged two of the goals with neat finishes when surrounded by Kinsale defenders and Dylan Stanton added Tramore’s third with a stinging drive from just inside the penalty area. Man of the match was Ian O’Callaghan who excelled for a Tramore side who now sit proudly at the top of the Division. Umbro U12 Division 2 Tramore Athletic 5 Nufarm Athletic 0 The Tramore Athletic U12s maintained their hugely impressive early season form with a fully deserved five goals to nil victory at home to Nufarm Athletic on Saturday morning. Tramore's excellent passing and movement brought the reward of goals at regular intervals in this game with Cian Fitton and David Hurley each grabbing a brace and Alan O'Reilly grabbing Tramore's fifth to round off a fantastic team performance. The Tramore Athletic Soccertots training camp continues this Sunday morning in Tramore Park from 10am for boys and girls aged 6-10. Bord Gais Neptune got their Superleague campaign underway with a comfortable home victory over Belfast Star on Saturday night in Neptune stadium. The victory was made all the easier with Star having to play without their American import because of work permit issues but Neptune took full advantage to cruise to a 105-59 win. Neptune playing their first game under the new banner of Bord Gais Neptune took control early on and never looked back with new signing Robinson Louisme leading all scorers with 29pts. Good contributions from Ger Noonan 15pts and Mick McGinn 14pts allowed coach Price to get the full use of his squad with young players Jason Wilkinson and Aidan King making their Senior debuts in what proved to be a very easy victory. Coach Price said he was very pleased with everybody and getting the first game under their belts was the main thing for all the players especially with a doubleheader next weekend. Captain Michael McGinn also stressed the importance of getting the first win of the season and how they have a foundation to build on going forward. US College American Football comes to Ireland 2012 The Irish American Football Association (IAFA) is pleased to announce that a major NCAA game is due to take place in Ireland. Navy will face Notre Dame in the newly constructed Aviva Stadium on Saturday 1st September 2012. The game will be a full NCAA regular season game and the outcome is expected to have a major effect on both teams National Championship prospects. Both teams have visited Dublin in the past, having played against each other in Croke Park, Dublin in November 1996. On that occasion, Notre Dame won 54-27. ”To see this stadium is to believe it has to be one of the finest venues in the world,” said Navy Athletic Director, Chet Gladchuk. “Although modest in capacity, few stadiums anywhere have attended to the detail, aesthetics and fan comfort found at Aviva. I guarantee those who travel to Ireland and attend this event will enjoy an experience that will be awesome and a memory not to be forgotten. Navy is very much looking forward to our visit and the wonderful experience we expect our coaches, players, fans and friends will enjoy.” • Marc Moloney from Rochestown who finished 2nd in the Grand Final at the 2 Day International Motocross held at Brinny last weekend.
