Chapel Steps Grotto Dear Editor, Through your well read magazine I wish to thank Mrs. Valerie Jolly for the beautiful Statue she kindly donated to our Grotto on the steps across from St. Columba's Church. Also thanks to Mr. Tony Casey of Casey Headstones situated at the back of Douglas Woollen Mills. Tony made the beautiful statue and put it up for us at no charge. Also thanks to Mr. Tom Jolly who maintains the ground around the Statue, which is an ongoing job. I would also like to mention Mrs. Bernadette Collins, wife of the man who put the Shrine there about 20 years ago. Mrs. Collins kindly donated the old Statue to me. It is a pleasure to look out my back window every morning and she is looking in at me. Also a thank you to the friends of the Statue who donate flowers regularly. God Bless (Name and address with Editor)

Parking in Douglas Dear Editor, Parking in Douglas has become a major problem in the last number of years. One of the major problems is that there are very few parking spaces for people who want to park their car for a short period of time. This is due to the fact that the majority of cars which are parked on the street are there for the whole day. They either work in Douglas or in the city. In order to alleviate this problem Cork County Council have decided to encourage people who are parking their cars for the whole day to do so in a designated area. Cork County Council has proposed to

use the area behind St. Patrick Woollen for this purpose. We fully support the need for such a car park. However, we feel that the proposed area is not suitable. We are very concerned about a number of issues. The two main issues of concern are firstly, the safety of people who will be using the car park and the increase in congestion during rush hour that the car park will generate. Given the location of the car park behind St. Patrick’s Woollen Mills we are very concerned about the safety of people who must walk through The Woollen Mills after dark and especially late at night to access the car park. Amongst other people these will include any person who works in the bars and restaurants in Douglas. There are countless places in The Woollen Mills that a person who was intent on causing harm or injury to another person could hide. We feel that that there is no conceivable way of ensuring a person’s safety. As stated the main function of the car park is to ensure that the other parking areas in Douglas are free for short term parking. This means that the majority of the cars using the long term facility are going to converge on Douglas West road at rush hour to access the entrance to the car. They will be joined by the traffic dropping children off at 5 schools in the immediate vicinity who also use the road. We believe this will lead to grid lock. Also the buses taking the people who will use the car park to town will not be able to keep to their schedules. As the two main bus routes namely the number 6 and 7 buses travel along this street. The Councillors in Cork County Council will be voting on whether to granting planning permission for the car park on Monday. On behalf of a number of concerned business owners in Douglas I would respectfully urge the

councillors to vote against the proposal. We would be delighted to work with the Councillors to ensure that a more suitable site may be found. Yours Sincerely, Stephen Barry

Party Responses to Key Child Protection Questions Dear Editor The issue of child protection and welfare has been glaringly absent throughout this 2011 General Election campaign but the ISPCC has been unyielding in our insistence that parties and candidates be clear about their strategy for Government with particular regard to children. With just a week before the Irish people go the polls to elect a new Government, the ISPCC has published definitive and clear commitments received from all parties regarding their plans for child protection and welfare. Each party leader and children’s spokesperson was pressed by the ISPCC to cast their party’s vote accordingly; to respond with a plain Yes (√) or No (x) to six key points. Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, Labour, Sinn Féin and the Green Party have all responded categorically that if elected to Government, within their first year of office they will action the following proposed fundamental developments in child protection; 1. Hold a referendum to place Children’s Rights into the Constitution

2. Place “Children First” – The National Guidelines for the protection and welfare of children on a statutory footing 3. Develop a time defined implementation plan for the provision of 24 hour social work services for children and families in Ireland. 4. Provide additional human resources to the Garda Vetting Unit in order to ensure that it can meet the demands being placed on it 5. Support, through funding, the provision of a Missing Children’s helpline 6. Ensure that all children in the care of the state have an allocated social worker While these clear commitments from the parties certainly appear to be positive, the ISPCC is urging voters to engage with candidates on these issues to ensure that children’s rights and protection do not become lost in the barrage of economic and financial debate. These key issues are not new asks, rather essential developments which need to be made in the first year of new Government to ensure that Ireland’s children are better protected. I hope that these party responses indicate what we can expect from newly elected officials and it is certainly something we need to insist upon before we begin to see any real, meaningful change in the area of child protection and welfare. Yours, Ashley Balbirnie Chief Executive ISPCC 29 Lower Baggot Street Dublin 2

Health is everything

w w w. d o u g l a s p o s t . i e

All this healthy eating is hard work. It’s a case of fail to prepare, prepare to fail. Since January 1st, I am on a less dairy, more omega 3/nuts/seeds and salads regime. I have to eat the salads in the anonymity of my kitchen: there is no elegant way to eat a plate of leaves; it’s like trying to eat a bush with a knife and fork. Every other day I make a healthy soup from scratch. I even went so far as to boil a chicken carcass to make an authentic stock but the resulting soup was so bland that I have resorted back to stock cubes; to hell with the sodium. I had a moan with my super fit work colleague, who runs for an hour every day in her lunch break and cycles seven miles to and from work every day in all weathers, about what a trudge it is to eat healthily. She replied that it wasn't healthy eating but normal eating. She quoted a magazine article that she had read recently; do not eat anything your grandmother wouldn't recognise; put lots of colour on your plate and never eat anything from a place where you go to fill up your car. That really caught my imagination. That very afternoon while I was at the filling station and was queuing up to pay, I looked around and sure enough the shop was filled with sponges, scented window cleaning fluid, plastic floor mats but also an extensive range of bubble gum, fizzy drinks and long shelf life baked 'goodies'. Every morning I religiously eat my orange (for the vitamin C and fibre) and banana. I was happy to read that the banana contains a chemical beginning with T. that enhances the production of serotonin - the happiness chemical - in the body. Three cheers for the banana. Six weeks on, there have been no miracles but all those hours of hacking vegetables and chomping my way through the leaves and nuts is paying off. I haven’t shed any pounds but I can feel the old fizz coming back and I have more energy. Last Saturday, I went on a thirteen mile hike with two friends along the Kerry Way from Killarney to Kenmare. It was fantastic. I am paying for it now as my body aches from buttock to calf; I walk like Neil Armstrong on the moon but mentally I feel top notch. The pain will pass and when I walk upright again, Skibbereen will be next on our hot list for hiking. Health is everything.

PET DIABETES Pete, The Piddling Pup A farmer's dog came into town, His Christian name was Pete. A noble pedigree he had, To see him was a treat. And as he trotted down the street 'Twas beautiful to see His work on every corner, His work on every tree. He watered every gateway, too, And never missed a post, For piddling was his specialty And piddling was his boast. The city curs looked on, amazed, With deep and jealous rage To see a simple country dog The piddler of the age! Then all the dogs from everywhere Were summoned with a yell To sniff the country stranger o'er And judge him by the smell. Some thought that he a king might be, Beneath his tail, a rose. So every dog drew near to him And sniffed him by the nose. They smelled him over one by one, They smelled him two by two; But noble Pete, in high disdain, Stood still till they were through. Then, just to show the whole shebang He didn't give a damn He trotted in a grocer's shop And piddled on a ham. He piddled in a mackerel keg. He piddled on the floor, And when the grocer kicked him out He piddled through the door. Behind him all the city dogs Lined up with instinct true To start a piddling carnival And see the stranger through. They showed him every piddling post They had in all the town, And started in, with many a wink, To pee the stranger down. They sent for champion piddlers Who were always on the go And who sometimes gave a piddling stunt Or gave a piddling show. They sprung these on him suddenly When midway through the town. Pete only smiled, and piddled off The ablest, white or brown. For he was with them, every trick, With vigour and with vim. A thousand piddles, more or less,

Were all the same to him. So he was wetting merrily With hind leg kicking high When most were hoisting legs in bluff And piddling mighty dry. On and on, Pete sought new grounds By piles of scrap and rust Till every city dog ran dry And only piddled dust. Still on and on went noble Pete As wet as any rill When all the champion city dogs Had come to a standstill. Then Pete did free-hand piddling With fancy flirts and flips Like the 'double dip' and the 'gimlet twist' And all the latest hits. And all the time the country dog Did never wink or grin But blithely piddled out of town As he had piddled in. The city dogs a convention held To ask, "What did defeat us?" But no one ever put them wise That Pete had diabetes! Diabetes mellitus (‘sugar diabetes’) is one of the most common hormonal disease seen in dogs and cats with an estimated 1 in 300 going on to develop this conditionduring their lifetimes. Unfortunately, there is growing evidence to suggest that this number is set to rise as pets live longer and the number of overweight pets increases. Just as in people, pets with diabetes are not able to produce enough insulin or alternatively their bodies do not allow them to use the insulin they produce. Insulin is vital as it allows sugar in the blood to enter cells allowing the body to function normally. If this process is disrupted, diabetes can result with potentially severe consequences. As with many diseases, early diagnosis is important. Signs that your pet may be at risk of diabetes include drinking too much water, urinating too much, weight loss despite an increased appetite, and lethargy. However, these signs are not always obvious and easy to miss. Diabetes can cause dogs and cats to become very sick. If diabetes is left untreated, sadly, coma and death can occur. However, with the correct insulin therapy and diet, diabetic pets can lead a long and healthy life.

Real Plan. Better Future for Cork South Central. The problems our country is facing are too serious for politics as usual. Unlike other parties, Fianna Fáil has made no new spending commitments and used no election gimmicks. Instead, we have set out a fully costed and detailed Plan. We are focusing on the key actions which will restore the public finances. This is an essential foundation upon which economic growth and employment will be built. Our main priority is jobs. Up to 150,000 jobs can be created with the right policies over the lifetime of our Plan. We have set out how this can be achieved on a sector by sector basis. We are also proposing real political reform which will give us a Dáil focused on national issues and a government opened up to experts from all sectors – ending the dominance of professional politicians. I ask for your support to help me begin a real renewal of politics and I ask you to support my colleague Michael McGrath and myself on Friday.

Turning Your Overseas Property into Cash. Many thousands of Irish people bought overseas properties over the last ten years, and some are now suffering losses due to the collapse in property prices and the current economic recession across Europe. An increasing number of second-hand holiday properties throughout Europe are now coming back on the market as the overseas owners realise that they can no longer afford to pay second mortgages in the uncertain times we are now living in. Owners of foreign property are now finding it difficult to sell these properties. However, at Extra Sales Consulting Limited (see our advert) we can help Irish people to offload their properties in a transparent and timely process. Over many years we have been working with the Russian marketplace and they are currently buying up resale property across Europe, and we can help to sell your property to them also. In order to complete a successful sale it is necessary to market your property where actual demand exists. We provide such assistance and expertise for clients who want and need to sell. For your convenience, Extra Sales Consulting Limited are holding an Information Evening in The Rochestown Park Hotel, Cork, on Monday 28th February from 5pm to 10pm. Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn

A poet’s art is often a matter of some mystery. There are those who say that it is not an art, and that it is bad in the sense that nobody else can learn it. But those who admit it’s existence and see the art of a potent artist, see crafty writing as well as inspired, are often at a loss to say what they mean. With a good poet, of course, there are effects which cannot be explained. Nor should one desire to explain a poet’s power with phrases. Poetry is a fresh power, an originating power, and as such is as strange as the equivalent thing in any art. Such a way with words is never to be understood. It is miraculous, and must be let alone. All the way from Scotland, Patrick Holloway, originally from Crosshaven in County Cork, and is currently studying to complete his masters in Creative Writing at the University of Glasgow, is the author of this week’s poem. Apple I remember you dropping a slice of an apple to the floor. You bent over like folded paper to pick it up. I winced as you ate it while mum rinsed the dishes of disappointment. ‘Waste not want not.’ I threw half an apple in the bin the other day without thinking. The bin was empty and I reached through dark to pick up the fallen moon. I ate it all and I’m sure I tasted exactly what you did. This grit. I let it sit upon my tongue like a fully formed memory.

Last Week’s Teazer.

Last Week’s Answer

After a long and arduous journey your ship reaches the sea which is your destination. However there is no water to be seen anywhere. In fact there never was any water and you knew that perfectly well before you set out. So why did you navigate your ship to this sea ?

Your ship is a space ship and the sea is one of the seas on the moon.

This Week’s Teazer. A man and his wife were driving through town late at night and the car broke down. The man had to get help but was nervous about leaving his wife alone. However there was absolutely no question of her coming too. Eventually he told her to lock all the doors and wait for him to return. Under no circumstances whatever was she to let anyone else into the car. The wife did as she was told, but, even so when the man returned to the locked car his wife was entertaining a stranger. What had happened ?

An Giota Gaeilge Le Liam Ó Móráin

Stádas na Gaeilge faoi chaibidil san Olltoghcháin Le cúpla seachtain anuas tá caint is comhrá éagsúil ar siúl ag ceannairí is a gcuid urlabhraithe cultúrtha is oideachais faoi cad a dhéanfadh siad chun ceann den ár dteanga dúchais, an Ghaeilge, a fhorbairt, a chosaint nó borradh a chuir fúithi. Ar chuala aon duine polasaí ar bith faoinár dara teanga dúchais – an Bhéarla ó thaobh an oideachais, an cultúir nó maidir lena chosaint a fhorbairt nó borradh a chur fúithi? Ar dtús tabharfaidh mé srac-fhéachaint ar polasaithe trí pháirtithe i leith na Gaeilge. I ráiteas a d’fheisigh urlabhraí oideachais FG, Fergus O Dowd TD (i mBéarla) faoina bpolasaí don Ghaeilge, cháin sé an Fianna Fáil mar, dar leis, ní ndearna siad rud ar bith don dteanga le linn a réim rialtais 14 bliana, agus gur ghoid FF polasaithe FG i leith na Gaeilge. Deir FG gurb é a straitéis na gaelscoileanna a fhorbairt, tionscnaimh nua fostaíochta a chruthú don Ghaeltacht, agus stádas líofacht na Gaeilge a scrúdú go náisiúnta. Deir O Dowd go nglacann FG leis an bhfíric nach bhfuil líofacht cainte na Gaeilge ar bhonn laethúla lasmuigh den gcóras oideachais ach ag 4.4% den phobal, agus gur polasaí fad-téarmach ag FG nach chóir go mbeidh an Ghaeilge éigeantach don Meáin Teist, agus cé go dtuigeann sé buarthaí daoine, tá sá sásta éist leo. Deir FG go scrúdóidh siad maisithe curriculum na Gaeilge, maisithe mar bhreis marcanna sa scrúdú béil a bhronnadh, agus an deis an curriculum a fhorbairt, agus geallann FG go méadódh siad faoi dhó líon na mic léinn a suífidh don Ghaeilge san Ard-Teist roimh 2018. Lorg mé aon tagairt don Ghaeilge, fiú ina pholasaí don Oideachas, ar shuíomh idirlíon Páirtí an Lucht Oibre, agus ní raibh puinn ann! A mhalairt ar fad a bhí le clos ó Fhianna Fáil. Tháinig mé ar chúpla tagairt don Ghaeilge ar a suíomh-san – ráiteas cuimsitheach ó Mary Hannifin TD ag seoladh polasaí FF don Ghaeilge agus don Ghaeltacht, agus an dara ráiteas, ‘Plean Ceart don Ghaeilge – Straitéis agus Stádas’ ó Pat Carey TD.

Níl aon chomparáid idir FG agus FF maidir leis an nGaeilge agus an Ghaeltacht, dar liom. Léiríonn an dá ráitis ó Fhianna Fáil go bhfuil tuiscint níos fearr ag an bpáirtí sin ar thábhacht na Gaeilge i measc an phobail, sé sin iad san le líofacht agus iad san go bhfuil bá acu don teanga ach nach bhfuil cumas cainte a dóthain acu. Tá an méad sin eolas sa dhá dhoiciméad – is léir gur smaoinigh siad agus go ndearna siad taighde ar ‘mhargadh’ na Gaeilge chun snas a chur ar atá déanta ag an bpáirtí le blianta beaga anuas. Faraor níl dóthain spáis agam sa cholún ghearr seo an cúpla pointe a leagadh amach agus tabharfaidh mé achoimre ghearr orthu: Dar le FF, chuirfeadh polasaí FG – deireadh a chur leis an nGaeilge éiginnteacht sa Mheán Teist – deireadh leis an teanga, agus dúirt Carey go maireann gach teanga de réir a stádas sa phobail, agus nár mhiste athruithe a dhéanamh sa tslí ina bhfuil an Ghaeilge á múineadh; Luaigh Carey tábhacht na hoibre atá sa ‘Straitéis 20 bliana na Gaeilge’ a d’fhoilsigh FF, sa rialtas, le gairid freisin. Dúirt Carey – agus is féidir an ráiteas seo agus ráiteas Hannifin a fháil ar shuíomh idirlíon FF - go ‘seasfaidh FF leis an nGaeilge agus leis an nGaeltacht, agus go dtabharfaidh siad gach cosaint do stádas na teanga sa chóras oideachais, agus go bhfuil an tuiscint ar thábhacht an stádas sin bunaithe ar thaighde eolaíoch agus ar saineolas’. Gach uair a chuala an ceannaire FF ag caint, leabhair sé I nGaeilge ar dtús agus ba é a léirigh an cumas cainte is líofa den triúir cheannaire le linn díospóireacht na gcinnire ar TG4, dar liom – sin bua eile do Fianna Fáil maidir lena ndílseacht don Gaeilge, im’ thuairim-se! Ach tá neart fadhbanna ag baint leis na mBéarla freisin, ár dara teanga dúchais – ritheann na fadhbanna seo go buan inár gnáth-shaoil, inár gcóras oideachais, agus tá neart gur féidir a phlé mar cúis le seo, dar liom – agus ní fheicim focal ar bith ó Pháirtí ar bith faoi seo. Tá moladh nach mór é ag dul do Fhianna Fáil, thar Fhine Gael, sa tslí is gur chaith siad am, rinne siad taighde eolaíoch, d’fhoilsigh siad straitéis fad-téarmach agus is ar riachtanais pobail na Gaeilge agus na Gaeltachta go bhfuil siad dírithe.

Arthritis of the Hand The hand and wrist have multiple small joints that work together to produce motion. This gives the fine motion needed to thread a needle or tie a shoelace. When the joints are affected by arthritis, activities of daily living can be difficult. Arthritis can occur in multiple areas of the hand and wrist. It can have multiple causes. It is estimated that one out of every five people living in Ireland has at least one joint with signs or symptoms of arthritis. About half of arthritis sufferers are under age 50. Arthritis is one of the leading cause’s of disability in the Ireland.

Cause Cartilage works as nature's "shock absorber." It provides a smooth gliding surface for the joint. All arthritic joints lose cartilage. When the cartilage becomes worn or damaged, or is lost due to disease or trauma, the joint no longer has a painless, mobile

area of motion. The body attempts to make up for the lost cartilage. It produces fluid in the joint lining (synovium), which tries to act like a cushion, like water in a waterbed. But it also causes the joint to swell. This restricts motion. The swelling causes stretching of the joint covering (capsule), which causes pain. Over time, if the arthritis is not treated, the bones that make up the joint can lose their normal shape. This causes more pain and further limits motion.

Disease When arthritis occurs due to disease, the onset of symptoms is gradual and the cartilage decreases slowly. The two most common forms of arthritis from disease are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Trauma When arthritis is due to trauma, the cartilage is damaged. People of any age can be affected. Fractures, particularly those that damage the joint surface, and dislocations are the most common injuries that lead to arthritis. An injured joint is about seven times more likely to become arthritic, even if the injury is properly treated.

Symptoms Pain Swelling Changes in Surrounding Joints Warmth Crepitation and Looseness Cysts Treatment options for arthritis of the hand and wrist include medication, splinting, injections, and surgery. Hand exercises may help improve muscle strength and joint range of motion in people who have arthritis. You can do hand exercises daily or, preferably, several times a day. You might find it helps to do hand exercises while soaking your hands in warm water. Know your limitations, though. For more information on hand exercises available for hand and wrist arthritis, call Garvan at Lynch’s Pharmacy on 4366923.

are also a good source of soluble fibre; try adding a tablespoon to breakfast every morning. Increase antioxidants The antioxidants vitamin C, co-enzyme QIO and vitamin E are important for helping to maintain a healthy heart, blood flow and cholesterol levels.

Reduce salt Your heart is about the size of your fist and starts beating when you are approximately three weeks old in the womb. By the time you are 70, it will have beaten two and a half billion times. High blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and high homocysteine levels are all contributory factors to heart disease.

HOMOCYSTEINE Homocysteine is produced in the body from another amino acid, called methionine, by a process called methylation. High levels of homocysteine are an indication of poor methylation and have been linked to heart disease, stroke and many other degenerative diseases. B vitamins, especially B12, are particularly important for healthy methylation as they provide methyl groups to ensure that homocysteine is methylated to form healthy substances. Researchers have Found that the body maintains normal homocysteine levels when there are sufficient B vitamins in the daily diet as these vitamins are used in the biochemical pathways that break down homocysteine

HOW TO HAVE A HEALTHY CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM Increase fibre Foods that contain soluble fibre; such as beans, lentils, porridge, fruits and vegetables; can help to maintain healthy cholesterol levels. Flax seeds

Salt intake has been linked to high blood pressure and so should be kept to a minimum .

Reduce saturated fat Eating large amounts of foods high in saturated fats; such as beef, pork, cheese, butter and ice cream; can have a negative effect on cholesterol levels.

Increase essential fatty acids Oily fish, nuts and seeds are a good source of essential fatty acids, that can help support healthy arteries, blood flow, normal heart rhythm and cholesterol levels. Alternatively, one could take a fish oil supplement, but make sure that it is screened for contaminants, PCBs and heavy metals.

Gan Gluten Makers & Bakers of Gluten and Wheat Free Produce

Increase garlic Garlic can help to support blood pressure and cholesterol levels and helps to maintain healthy arteries.

Reduce caffeine Caffeine has been linked to high blood pressure and high homocysteine levels. Home & n de r a G Gardening Things to do This Week

The first crocuses always take you by surprise. You never seem to see them coming. They spring up overnight. Quite suddenly you become aware of patches of yellow under the trees and flecks of gold along the edges of the path. Soon the whole garden will be fairy-lit with the little crocus candles of ivory and lavender, but it is the bold yellow firstlings that take your breath away. Every year it happens and every year you feel the same old astonishment. So once more it's time to get ready for the days ahead. We'll try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing. Now not everything in this article may apply to you or to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week. Flower Garden Start planting anemone De Caen and St. Brigid outdoors for summer flowers.

For high quality blooms, dig and manure a trench for sweet peas. Sow candytuft among and around spring bulbs to flower and disguise the fading bulb foliage. Kitchen Garden Make main sowings of broad beans outdoors. Sow an early pea variety in the open, and repeat every 3-4 weeks. Plant out autumnsown cauliflowers. Make new mint beds, and divide and replant existing ones. Sow parsnips, salsify and scorzonera, under cloches for faster germination in cold gardens. Dig and manure a trench for runner beans. Lawns & Hedges Repair edges and sow bare patches on lawns; cover with net or black cotton to

deter birds. Lay turf to make new lawns. Green House Take soft cuttings of geraniums, fuchsias, dahlias, coleus and winter bE'gon las as their shoots develop. Start begonia tubers into

The all-new Honda EV Concept electric vehicle will be displayed in Geneva, alongside a platform for mid-size plug-in hybrid vehicles. The concepts will be shown as part of Honda's "Road to Zero Emissions", illustrating the current technology of hybrids alongside the near-future technology of plug-in vehicles and the ultimate goal of Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles, like Honda's FCX Clarity. Both vehicles are integral to the Honda Electric Mobility Network, the company's comprehensive approach to reducing CO2 emissions through innovative products, energy-management and energyproduction technologies. The Honda EV Concept hints strongly at the direction and styling for Honda's upcoming production battery electric vehicle, the Fit EV, which will be introduced to the U.S. and Japan in 2012. The all-new plugin hybrid platform showcases Honda's next-generation, two-motor hybrid technology set to debut in 2012. Honda EV Concept The EV Concept is designed to meet the daily driving needs of the average metropolitan commuter and utilises the same 5-passenger layout found in the popular Fit hatchback (known as Jazz in Europe). The Honda EV Concept will achieve an estimated 160 km (100 mile) driving range per charge using the US EPA LA4* city cycle . Driving range can be maximised by use of an innovative 3-mode electric drive

Alongside the Honda EV Concept will be a prototype Honda charging stand, providing a glimpse at the future of an electric-charging infrastructure that is easy to use and intuitive for consumers. Honda Plug-in Hybrid Honda will also unveil a plug-in hybrid platform, which showcases Honda's next-generation two-motor hybrid system. Integrated into a mid-size sedan platform, the plug-in hybrid is designed to be compatible with daily driving habits, allowing for short, frequent trips in all-electric mode, while providing long-distance driving capability when needed. The Honda two-motor system continuously moves through three different modes to maximise driving efficiency: all-electric, petrolelectric and a engine direct-drive mode. The plug-in hybrid also uses regenerative braking to charge the battery.

“THE DARK ROOM” Is Where a drug addict does one of two things decides to live are instead decides to die…. Philip A.McCarthy is an emerging director and writer keen to explore multiple avenues of creativity. “ THE DARK ROOM “ Is his 2nd Screenplay which already has received the Samuel Beckett Award for best script in the Deerpark Dramfest 2007 cork but he wanted to go one step further, and make this script into a screenplay which is now being edited. Philip says: I wrote “ THE DARK ROOM “ in 2005, when I think back to why I decided to write this play there was one person came into my mind and the life he had over his drug addiction, this man gave me the inspiration to write this play. This man, who I want to remain anonymous, would be just like any young person growning up but lived a very secretive life,

and keept everything to himself and was very deep. As I got to know this man a number of years ago while I was battling my own demons. I learned a lot about his life this screenplay can be disturbing to people looking at a young lad growing into adult hood, with nothing in life to live for only “ Drugs. “ This screenplay is based on true story about real life and young people who have falling on bad times and have turned to drugs to escape reality. It shows the ups and downs the ins and out’s the wheeling and dealing and being on rollercoaster not knowing when to get off. The sad thing is people can’t and in the end they die… its been an emotional experience to write this screenplay, My intention was to get across the way in which life is so easily destroyed…. Individual lives and the lives of people close by when people become involved with drugs of any kind. I’ve been fortunate to find away to live life well, but the central character in this screenplay. Who is “ Tony “ based on a friend of mine didn’t. So I would like to dedicate this film to addicts all over the world who have died from addictive addiction …. May They Rest In Peace”.

Festival visitors spend over €800,000 in Bantry With preparations now well under way for this summer's festivals in Bantry, it has been revealed that last year the three festivals had a direct economic impact on Bantry and the local area of more than €890,000. Approximately three thousand visitors descended on Bantry for the West Cork Chamber Music Festival, West Cork Literary Festival and Masters of Tradition last summer. Despite the recession, ticket sales for the three events have risen year on year. More than 10,600 tickets were sold in 2010 and ticket sales for the West Cork Chamber Music Festival increased by 7%. Sara O'Donovan, Marketing Manager with West Cork Music which organises the three festivals, said " For those weeks, Bantry becomes one of the major Festival destination towns in Ireland. The town offers back to back festivals featuring world-class chamber music and some of the most celebrated names in literature before festival fever starts all over again in August with the Masters of Tradition." Festival visitors descended on Bantry from as far afield as the Middle East and Australia last year and spent more than €800,000 in the town. 26% of the West Cork Chamber Music Festival's audience come from overseas while 27% travel from outside County Cork. More than one hundred musicians as well as nearly eighty writers stay in the town while appearing at the festivals and they spend a further €34,000 locally. For those who can't make the trip to Bantry, extensive RTÉ lyric broadcasts of concerts from the West Cork Chamber Music Festival mean that 6 million listeners from throughout Europe can tune in. Music lovers from

sixteen European countries including Spain, Poland, Estonia and Sweden listen to these broadcasts which are brought to them through the European Broadcasting Union. A further 330,000 BBC Radio 3 listeners also tune in to get a flavour of what they are missing. Although still four months away, the West Cork Music office is already busy with preparations for this summer's trio of festivals. The West Cork Chamber Music Festival takes place from Friday 24 June to Saturday 2 July and the brochure will be available in the coming weeks with general booking opening at the end of April. Amongst the highlights of the 16th festival will be the Bantry debut of the Irish Chamber Orchestra, the return of star violinist Nicola Benedetti, the Norwegian ensemble Barokksolistene with its message that baroque music is just old pop music and leading Irish tenor Robin Tritschler's performance alongside the celebrated pianist Graham Johnson. More details can be found on www.westcorkmusic. ie The West Cork Literary Festival follows on immediately from Sunday 3 to Friday 8 July and the programme will be announced in the coming weeks. The programme of workshops is almost finalised and is on the website www. westcorkliteraryfestival.ie Amongst those workshops that are confirmed are Fiction with novelist John Boyne who wrote the acclaimed Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Memoir with Hugo Hamilton and Crime Writing with Eoin McNamee. Hazel Orme who proved to be such a hit at last year's editing panel discussion returns to take the Publishing workshop.

Speaking with Jimmy Reidy our friend from “Round the fireside” radio show, he was very interested in doing a program with the Golden couples, the 29 couples who celebrated their Golden Wedding in “2010”. As many of you know the program goes out every Monday night at 10.45 for 1 hour and again the following Monday night, 2 shows are recorded on the first night Young at Heart members have made 4 programs with Jimmy in the past and also have a C.D to mark the occasion as well as 2 C.Ds from another show “If anyone would like to listen to our show” where Agnes Dwyer, Denis Carroll, Maureen Philpott and many more from Douglas have wonderful stories from the past. If any of the Golden couples would like to take part, tell a story, sing a song or play the bagpipes as I know John Murray can. Contact me on 4363867 We send congratulations to Bartosz Manager of Douglas Village Shopping Centre who is the proud daddy of a baby boy “Matthew” who weighed in at 9lb 1oz it is Bartosz and Daqmara first child I did offer babysitting services from our members who between them all would have raised not far short 1,000 children, plenty of “old fashioned love and experience” in fact we should set up a babysitting company you don’t have to be young to be entrepreneur “any ideas in the name we could call the company” We wish every good luck in the future to Orla Lannin who has decided to explore new pastures. Orla is a familiar face to us all and will be sorely missed by all her many friends in Douglas and beyond, Orla is visiting our old friend Bronwyn in Australia and will convey all our good wishes to her. Sincere Sympathy to Denis, Alan and Kevin O’Riordan on the passing of their beloved wife and mother Maron, we will only know her as “Mar Clark”. Mar was a gentle soul and will be

sadly missed by family and many friends.

Irish Language Class for Adults 'Information Night’ Thursday 24th February 2011@ 8pm Passage West GAA Clubhouse Passage West GAA is proposing to commence an Irish language class for adults who have previously studied Irish at school and who would like to re-connect with it again. The class would be held once a week at the clubhouse in Manning Park. .. If you require further information: 087 9865524 Out and About with Fergus O’Leary There's a thrush that strikes up at first light somewhere out at the back of my house each morning and what a cheery thing it is to hear. Mind you , as the days grow longer and he gets going earlier, I'll probably not be quite so enchanted but just at the moment the timing is perfect for a bright start to the day It is positively enraging to see the signs of the dumping of refuse in the car park opposite Aherns farm and into the swamp between the road and the line. Here is something that I have never understood. That people would be prepared to go to such lengths (I'm assuming here that this sort of thing is done at night)to avoid the payment what are relatively modest disposal charges and at the same time befoul the countryside defies explanation. When it was my job to clear up behind these characters I would be given the reason that waste disposal was so expensive, which it isn't. No, respectable people, by which I mean people worthy of respect, face their responsibilities and dispose of their rubbish properly. 24 - Thur 24 Feb '11

And while I'm on the subject (I'm on a roll, lads) litter is dumping by degrees. It's only the efforts of the Saturday morning gang that saves us from drowning in litter because we can't expect anything more than the bare minimum from the council in these times of savage cut-backs. I shall be going up to the meeting at St Peters tonight(I write this on Monday mornings) which should prove to be an interesting experience. I'll give you my take on it next week. Jason Byrne takes his fringe show to all his favourite Irish venues. Jason Byrne is probably the most exciting live stand up performer in the world today. I know, sounds like some overstated press drivel but as anyone who has seen him live will testify, it isn’t. Jason is also the biggest selling comedian at the Edinburgh Fringe festival ... ever! Such is Jason’s popularity in Australia that this year he may have to spend at least 3 months there, I only tell you this because this tour may be your only chance to see him in Ireland for quite some time. Apart from the rest of the world wanting him for all their very own, in the last few months alone he has completed the fifth series of ‘Anonymous’ (RTE2), The Wildside (BBC1), a third series of ‘The Jason Byrne Show’ (BBC Radio 2), a new radio sitcom ‘Father Figure’ (BBC Radio 2) and ‘Up Close And Personal’ a one hour special for RTE. College Corinthians AFC On the Schoolboy front it was great to see our under 12 and under 14 Premier squads recording fine away victories in the National Cup while there was also good victories for our under 11 Premier and under 13 Division one sides as they both maintained their challenge for league honours. Schoolboys Section National Cup Under 12 Nenagh Town 0 Corinthian Boys 2 College Corinthians were in command of this game from early on without making any real attempts at goal. Dean Swords and Bryan Cotter were raiding down each wing ably assisted by their respective full backs David O'Regan and Jack Murray. Colin O'Brien and Gavin Holland were excellent upfront, with David Lynch pulling the strings from midfield. The opener came from a free kick on the left wing which was curled in by Ross Welch. The home side put our back line under more pressure but Sean Desmond and Mark O'Leary held firm with each attack. In the second half, David Dalton, Daniel Cullen, Mark O'Regan and Harry Shanahan came on which put more impetus into Corintrhians attack. Harry Shanahan finished the game off with a cracker of a goal with only two minutes left on the clock. No virus found in this incoming message. Many thanks to Nenagh, who were very friendly and enthusiastic hosts and made the day a very enjoyable one for our lads. They have a fabulous set up and clearly are going to be a Club we will hear an awful lot more bout in the coming years. Under 14 Ballynanty Rovers 0 Corinthian Boys 3 It was a similar story again in Limerick where the Corinthians team were given a great welcome by a very sporting and friendly Ballynanty Club. The game itself was a very competitive one with the final scoreline slightly flattering in Corinthians favour. There was nothing to choose between the two sides in the first half but when the breakthrough came it was worth waiting for with Craig Donnellan scoring with a superb free kick. Once in front Corinthians grew in confidence and Jamie Philpott crowned a superb individual performance with two top class finishes. The back four of Mark Dolan, Shane Daly, Dylan Walsh and Ben Mc Cauliffe were superb in what was overall a great team effort. Under age Section Winter Street Leagues The finals day for this years Winter Street Leagues at Under 7 and Under 8 age level will take place on Saturday March 5th, certainly something to look forward too for all the lads involved.

Douglas Hall Underage I.I.B.A. Short Mat by Finbarr Buckley Bowls Umbro U-16 Local Cup Douglas Hall 5; Springfield Ramblers A 0 The Hall had a comfortable win at Moneygourney last Saturday morning, courtesy of goals from Rob Lehane (2), Jamie Ryan, Dave Reardon and Darren Lehane. Stephen Murphy deputized in goal for Ryan Kennedy and dealt competently with anything that came his way. Best for the hosts were defender Dave Sheehan, midfielder John Burke and striker Paul Higginbothem. Umbro U-16 Division Two Douglas Hall A 4; Rathcoole Rovers 2 Tony Dold & Colm Drinan’s team served up their best performance of the season to reverse the result when the sides last met earlier in the season. Following a tense firsthalf, Aaron Dold scored direct from a free-kick in the 45th minute to opening the scoring. Striker Danny Cashin extended the lead with two goals inside ten minutes, before Rathcoole’s Liam Cronin reduced the arrears from the penalty spoy. Noel Fanning added a fourth to seal the points, with Donal Linehan scoring a second for the visitors with two minutes remaining.

G.A.A FOCUS Snippets from the Local and National Scene By Pat Harrington Kilkenny vs. Tipperary Hurling at this time of year does not reflect what this magical game is all about – skill, touch, and it can be the most exciting game in the world. Kilkenny and Tipperary have been the two best county sides in the country over the past two years. These teams matched up in the opening game of the 2011 national league. With both counties being minus seven of the teams that started in the 2010 all-Ireland final Kilkenny looked very much your average side as Tipperary sprayed the ball around and conjured up a great goal. Tommy Walsh was rather cynical in two of his tackles – a leg trip on Pa Bourke and a dirty flick of the hurley on one of the Tipp forwards. In the final 15 minutes the ball hardly passed the Kilkenny 50 metre line. The Cats wore Tipp down and won an endless amount of frees in attack which were punished by Richie Hogan. In this second half Tipperary didn’t help their cause by short passing when a direct ball would have been more advantageous. The commentator remarked that it was not easy on the eye; how right he was. As the conditions deteriorated Kilkenny never looked in any danger at this late stage of the game. It’s still early days and this is only winter hurling. The Cats have not died yet! There is an oft’ exaggerated term used by Sky Sports when they refer to premier league football games on Sunday as Super Sunday. Compare February 6th. when C103fm’s Finbarr McCarthy covered the all-Ireland junior and intermediate finals from Croke Park. They carried continuous reports of the Cork vs. Offaly senior hurling game and updates from the Corn Uí Mhuire game between Coláiste Chríost Rí and Tralee C.B.S.; all this along with coverage of the all-Ireland camogie semi-final from Inniscarra by Mary Newman. On television we had a choice between rugby (Ireland vs. France) on RTE 2 and National League hurling featuring Galway vs. Wexford live on TG4. Now that’s what I call Super Sunday! With due respects to Sky Sports their Super Sunday could not hope to compete with such a range of games.

five minutes and Finbarr McCarthy informed us that five of the Lockes players were on yellow cards. Meelin, 5 points up with 12 minutes remaining came under pressure but luckily Lockes continued their wasteful shooting. At the final whistle the commentator suggested that school in Meelin should be suspended on Monday – Yes! Meelin, (the tiny hamlet in Duhallow) are all-Ireland champions.

Cork vs. Offaly (Hurling) Next up was commentary on part of the second half of the Cork vs. Offaly national hurling encounter. Commentator Paudie Palmer described the game as pedestrian. Co-commentator Tommy Nott was critical of Cork’s “fluting around with the ball” when they should be more direct and give the sliothar into the inside forwards. At any rate the Leesiders kicked on and won by 5 points.

Intermediate Clubs Hurling Final The Ballymartle side got off to a flyer – six points in as many minutes. The Cork lads we were told were so calm, so collective and so measured. Commentator John Cashman described the noise in Croker as been louder than was heard in the Aviva Stadium. Dicksboro missed a penalty and McCarthy in the Ballymartle goal made another important save. John Lockes had rallied and reduced the deficit to a point at half time and Finbarr McCarthy rightly stated that Ballymartle would need to show an immediate improvement after the resumption. Into the second half and commentator John Cashman announced that Ballymartle were back in the groove after scoring 1 – 1 without reply. But the Kilkenny lads weren’t going to lie down that easy and came back to score 7 points on the trot. A further goal from Dicksboro put Ballymartle under the cosh but the Cork champions rallied with a goal of their own. Finbarr McCarthy wasn’t his parochial self when he questioned a free awarded to Ballymartle but he redeemed himself at a later stage when he expressed disagreement with a free given to Dicksboro which he compared to a decision given against Cork in the minor all-Ireland final. A goal from Ballymartle in injury time gave them a deserved victory in dramatic circumstances. Congratulations to Ballymartle; a huge achievement from a club who suffered some very disappointing defeats over the years.

Speedy Recovery Here I wish a speedy recovery to my club colleague and good friend Tony Kenneally. Hope to see him back on the bowling mat very shortly.

Tramore Athletic AFC U12 Local Cup Rockmount A 0 Tramore Athletic 4 The Tramore Athletic U12s brought their excellent league form into the Local Cup when they defeated Rockmount A to progress to the next round on Sunday morning. Tramore's victory reflected their most complete and impressive team performance of the season with each player from Dave Horgan in goal right through Tramore's backline, midfield and strikeforce giving faultless displays. Tramore's fully

merited victory was built on the outstanding performances of Andrew McCarthy and Bryan Lyons in particular but every single Tramore could be justifiably proud of a season's best performance. Dave Hurley grabbed two excellent goals for Tramore with Colm Kiely and Cian Fitton completing the scoring to see Tramore through to the last sixteen of the Cup. The Tramore Athletic Soccertots training camp continues this Sunday morning in Tramore Park from 10am for boys and girls aged 6-10. Learn new football skills in a fun and friendly atmosphere under the watchful supervision of qualified coaches.

Douglas Community School Athletics Douglas Community School athletes competed at the Munster Schools Cross-Country championships at Cork IT recently and produced some outstanding displays. Douglas CS had all four teams minor, junior, inter and senior qualify for the All-Ireland championships and also retained the best overall school cup for the 7th consecutive year. The course at Cork IT was testing with some mucky patches and one small climb. First into action were the minor boys over 2500m and here the Douglas CS team had a fine 3rd place finish. James Gorton led the team home in 9th place and there were other great races from Barry Forde 25th, Aidan De Saulles 31st, David Smith 33rd, Daniel Burke 34th and Alan Morgan 35th. The junior boys team were without the services of four of their top athletes due to illness/injury but performed very well to finish in 3rd place. Liam Harris led them home with a superb run for 4th place and with Declan O Herlihy 18th, Jamie O Connell 21st and Fionn Bracken 22nd the team came a great 4th. In the inter 5000m Billy Murphy led the Douglas CS team home in 9th place and Eoin Bourke had a super run for 13th. Here the team took 3rd place also. Finally in the senior boys 6000m race Shane Quinn of Waterford took the pace out hard from the start and Peter Hanrahan was the only one to go with him. Peter however suffered from the fast pace and ended up being caught by the athletes behind. Patrick Coleman was a super 3rd, Emmet Bracken 5th, Cullen Lynch 6th, Ian Tobin 10th, Cillian Fleming 12th and Jamie Sullivan 16th. The team packed very well and won the team title easy with 24 points. The athletes now travel to the All-Ireland Schools Cross-Country championships in Dublin on March 12th in seek of further glory.

Grangevale AFC CITY CHALLENGE CUP Grangevale 2 – Dillon’s Cross 6 Sunday’s outing against Dillon’s Cross saw Grangevale’s run of five unbeaten games come to an end last weekend, with a 6-2 loss to a well organised Dillon’s Cross at Grangevale Park. The management made five changes to the starting line up with a number of players unavailable for various reasons. Barry Twomey deputised for the suspended Gary Aherne in goal and a new look back four comprised of Colin McKeon, Gerald McSorley, Shane Kennedy and Colin McSweeney. Dan Cronin, John Harris, Damo O’Callaghan and Colin Murphy formed the midfield with Dave O’Connor and Diarmuid O’Neill up front. The visitors got off to a great start and were a goal ahead inside 5 minutes. The Vale got themselves back into the game on 15 when Dave O’Connor struck from 25 yards and soon after O’Connor gave The Vale a 2-1 lead with a sublime volleyed finish from 12 yards out. The new back four were now beginning to gel and things looked promising. However, things took a turn for the worst in the 36th minute when Dillon’s were awarded a penalty which was duly despatched. The Vale seemed to press the self destruct button and two minutes later the visitors again took the lead. This was followed by the dismissal of McSweeney and in the 44th minute another goal to give Dillon’s a 4-2 interval lead. With only ten men and two goals down, it was always going to be difficult for Grangevale to salvage anything from this game but, to their credit, they put in a big effort in the second half. Murphy was unfortunate not to score in the 53rd minute and for a while it looked like a comeback was possible. This was not to be, and in the 63rd minute the game was put beyond doubt when Dillon’s beat the offside trap to make it 5-2 and that’s how it stayed until the final minute when another break saw the visitors head into the last 16 of the competition with a convincing 6-2 victory. The Grangevale lads will need to dust themselves down quickly as the games are now coming thick and fast and next Friday night sees another big test when The Vale travel to Moneygourney to take on high-flying Douglas Hall in the league, k.o. 7.30pm.
