The Word

by George Thompson - Editor

Fr. Mathew’s Fr. Mathew’s Basketball Club U14A Boys made history last Sunday week by winning the All Ireland Club Championship for the second year in a row. Over the course of the weekend they beat Queens (Belfast) & Streete Warriors (Westmeath) to top their pool and followed that with a convincing victory over St. Vincent’s (Dublin) in the semi-final. They kept the best for last however, as they beat the Dublin Champions Killester Kubs by 22 points in the final on Sunday afternoon. This is the first team at U14 level to win this competition back to back. Further spells of sunshine expected at St. Luke’s Home with Bealtaine Festival on the horizon. Residents and Day Care Centre visitors at St. Luke’s Home, Mahon, Cork can look forward to further spells of sunshine in their lives with the onset of the May festival, Bealtaine, with song and dance routines, baking bonanza’s, a cake sale for Alzheimer’s Tea Day, a gardening expedition and much more guaranteed to further brighten up their days as we approach the summer months. Bealtaine festival is Ireland’s biggest collaborative arts festival and St. Luke’s Home, Mahon has a varied calendar of events to embrace and celebrate creativity in older people. To kick off, Ms. Joan Hanna from the Board of Directors at St. Luke’s Home will officially open the festival by unveiling a montage of artwork created by St. Luke’s Home residents. According to Ms. Hanna; “Art is an excellent form of expression and communication for older people. It brings residents together and generates an environment of inspiration and relaxation while providing an outlet for those residents who are physically or vocally impaired or for those with dementia.” A joint venture with Mahon Youth through an Intergenerational Project will see residents and local youths of St. Luke’s Home whip together in the kitchen for the ‘Bake and Brew’ Alzheimer’s Tea Day on Thursday May 5th. The Home will also be ‘in tune’ with their residents and the community when Douglas Junior Ceili Band will visit St. Luke’s Home on Friday, May 13th. Other choirs, bands and drama groups visiting during Bealtaine will include Cork well known singer and entertainer Joan O’Leary, a friend of St. Luke’s Home, John Bennett and Jack Coughlan & Friends; who will be making their annual visit over the duration of Bealtaine. To draw the Bealtaine celebrations to a close, St. Luke’s Home is hosting a Barbeque for all residents, visitors to the Day Care facility, family members and friends of The Home. St. Luke’s Home charitable Foundation has also been set up to raise funds for the 120-bed Home, its residential programmes and support services for older people in the community, enhancements to its dedicated Dementia Unit and Day Care Centre and the completion and running of the new Education Centre. www.stlukeshome.ie

WINDMILL STOP Dear Editor, There are many rumours circulating about the future of The Cork Opera House. It reminds of what happened in London. The Windmill Theatre, a British institution as unchanging as saucy seaside postcards, finally put up the shutters in 1964. All through the wartime air raids its proud boast was “We Never Closed.” Now permissiveness has left it behind. The kind of titillation the Windmill Girls provided was strictly limited by the law that permitted stage nudity only if it did not move. A Windmill Girl known as Peaches was celebrated for having made an illegal dash from the stage on seeing a mouse when in mid-tableau. The Windmill was known as a forcing house for new comedians; Peter Sellers and Tony Hancock first appeared between the nude acts and learned to hold an audience whose mind was elsewhere. Has anyone seen a mouse in The Cork Opera House lately ? Neil O’Donoghue Greenhills Disclaimer: Any views or opinions expressed in these letters are solely those of the individual author(s) and do not necessarily represent those of The Douglas Post.

Cllr Kieran McCarthy

McCarthy’s Artist in Residence Programme Cllr Kieran McCarthy, through his ward funds and community programme, is seeking an artist from the south east ward of Cork City to take up his artist in residence scheme. Cllr McCarthy has teamed up Sample-Studios on the 2nd floor of the former FAS/Revenue Government Buildings at Sullivan’s Quay, Cork City to provide a studio space for a three month residency. Cllr McCarthy is searching in particular for a painter/ sketch artist with some experience and looking to pursue further work in a studio. Cllr McCarthy is particularly interested in completing a programme encompassing historical impressions of the city (artistic interpretations of eras in Cork’s past using maps and historical sources plus also perhaps to pursue artwork with a historical vein in the rich landscapes of the south east part of the city). The nature of the work is open to interpretation and can be negotiated. Sample-Studios Limited is a non-profit association established at the beginning of 2011 by an artist-led board of directors hailing from a range of disciplines including, textiles, media, sculpture, paint, music and drama. The purpose of this association is to support and promote emerging and established contemporary practitioners of the arts from Cork and beyond, through affordable artist-run studios, to sustain and develop local, regional and international initiatives and to promote research and community outreach projects. Many of the members of the group offer education and help in areas such as computer design skills, arts administration, accounting and management skills as well as offering exhibition opportunities for the members of Sample-Studios. For further details of McCarthy’s Artist in Residence Programme, please contact Cllr Kieran McCarthy at 087653389.. DouglasPostAd:Layout 1 18/08/2009 12:00 Page 1

Jelly Boy Don’t you just love bank holiday Mondays? There was a time in my misguided youth when I hated them because everything shut down but now I have come to appreciate the opportunity to tune out and recharge the batteries. I woke up about 9.30 am. My husband was still asleep. I could hear the boys being boys downstairs in the living room. I thought I would chance nipping into the kitchen for a cup of coffee and grabbing a flapjack, which I made last night and ducking back into bed without raising the attention of the boys: once they know you’re up, you’re up! I had just reached the bottom of the stairs when I was discovered. Two of them raced towards me and had a fight about who was going to hug me first. I peeled them off in exasperation and bolted for the kitchen. Middle son (8) asked for a flapjack. There were three left. I gave him one. Youngest son (6) then came in and claimed the second flapjack. I had my eye on the last one. Then Youngest asked me would I make the jelly. I told him that I had made the jelly last night and that it was in the fridge. He waved me away and starting to climb up on the kitchen counter saying, “There is a packet of jelly up here that you can make”. Again, I told him that it was in the fridge. But he was determined to find it, “No, no, it’s up here, I’ll show you.” Middle son joined in and said, “We know, we made it last night, it’s in the fridge” but he still wasn’t listening. He stood up on the counter. As I tell him the whereabouts of the jelly for the fourth time, he swung open the cupboard door and it bashed me on the head. I closed my eyes and turned away to deal with the pain but as I did I walked into another open cupboard door that dented me on the forehead. I yanked the Doubting Thomas from the • Mental health campaigner John Mc Carthy with his wife Liz at the launch counter and throwing open the fridge door said, “There’s your stupid of his book “The Human Condition” at the Corner House pub, Coburg jelly!” Highly indignant, he turned to me and protested, “You don’t Street on Monday night. Photo: Billy macGill have to shout!” At that point my husband wandered into the kitchen and said sleepily, “Is everything ok?” He reached for the last flapjack. I snatched it back out of his hand. Picking up my coffee, I stormed back to bed to recharge my batteries and start all over again.

STAFF PROFILE Hi, my name is Trudi and I’m a Senior Stylist in Artisan 2. I’ve been part of the Artisan team for 6 years and have been involved in the Salon Training during this time. I travelled for a year and during this time I gained further experience in Salons in England and Australia. On my return, I undertook and completed a Degree in a Master Colour Programme with Wella. In the Salon I have a wide client base, from clients that like a natural look to clients that like to push the boundaries with both cuts and colours. I love when clients look for something different as it challenges my artistic skills. I also love the challenge that new clients bring and appreciate the loyalty my existing clients show.

with Ronnie McGinn

In the world of modern poetry, Gene Barry, is in my opinion, among those most likely to succeed. With Gene poetry is a virtue, and as we know the best user of anything is the person who has the virtue concerned with it. Gene uses condensed thoughts with generous with words to express his emotions. I asked him to describe his latest poem he replied “The bereavement of separation for men is largely ignored worldwide and yet it is brought home to them every day in the simplest of ways like hanging out the washing. Closed Line is a poem packed with the pain, isolation and anguish experienced while carrying out one of life’s mundane chores. It is a deeply emotional piece that in an instant brings this home to the reader. The inability of families to provide emotional support to separated men is a universal problem that seriously needs addressing”. You can contact Gene at: genebarrypoet@gmail.com Closed Line For separated fathers I would walk to my gallows once weekly and feed the rope with single men. And witness the gawking families unilaterally waving the many colours of unity’s insults. They would do it without moving or speaking. Without even knowing the pain they had infused. Marrow bound. A line of useless drones out of sink with family matters. Us, was parked in every garden that wasn’t ours, dancing all day in wind that ceased to live in what seemed to be the only lifeless garden. Rainbows of stories sticking out their tongues.

Allergies Allergies occur when your immune system reacts to a foreign substance such as pollen, bee venom or pet dander. Your immune system produces substances known as antibodies. Some of these antibodies protect you from unwanted invaders that could make you sick or cause an infection. When you have allergies, your immune system makes antibodies that identify your particular allergen as something harmful, even though it isn't. When you come into contact with the allergen, your immune system's reaction inflames your skin, sinuses, airways or digestive system. Symptoms Allergy symptoms depend on your particular allergy, and can involve the airways, sinuses and nasal passages, skin, and digestive

system. Allergic reactions can range from mild to severe. In some severe cases, allergies can trigger a life-threatening reaction in your body known as anaphylaxis. Causes An allergy starts when the immune system mistakes a normally harmless substance for a dangerous invader. The immune system then produces antibodies that are always on the alert for your particular allergen. When you're exposed to the allergen again in the future, these antibodies release a number of immune system chemicals, such as histamine, that cause allergy symptoms. Treatment Allergy treatments include: • Allergen avoidance. • Medications to reduce symptoms. • Immunotherapy. • Emergency epinephrine.

Diabetes, what do I do now?

Lifestyle remedies Some allergy symptoms improve with home treatment. Sinus congestion and hay fever symptoms often improve with nasal lavage — rinsing out the sinuses with a saline solution. Household airborne allergy symptoms, such as those caused by dust mites or pet dander, may improve by taking steps to reduce your exposure to allergens. Steps include frequently washing bedding and stuffed toys in hot water, maintaining low humidity, regularly using a vacuum with a fine filter such as a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter, and replacing carpeting with hard flooring. Mold allergy symptoms may be alleviated by avoiding outdoor work in damp weather, wearing a dust mask while working outdoors, and keeping your windows closed at night. Chartered Accountants Feel the Heat Walk Over Hot Coals for Charity Over fifty members of the Chartered Accountants Cork Society excelled in mind over matter when they took a walk over hot coals in an effort to raise money for two Cork charities – the Shine Centre for Autism andCork Simon Community. As darkness fell over the Maryborough Hotel, over one hundred people gathered in the glow of the hot coals to witness the Cork accountants follow the centuries old healing and initiation ritual of Firewalking. Their efforts helped to raise over €10,000. The Firewalking initiative was the

idea of a Chartered Accountants Cork Society committee that wanted to do something a little bit different that would get the entire Society in Cork involved. According to Anthony Reidy, Chairman Chartered Accountants Cork Society, “We wanted to catch the imagination of our members and the public to raise awareness of both our Society and most importantly the two worthwhile charities involved”. Spectators and Firewalkers alike were treated to a post-Firewalk reception hosted by the Chartered Accountants Cork Society. Thanking the Firewalkers – and their sponsors, for their efforts, Kieran Kennedy, CEO

Shine Ireland, said: “We are delighted to have been one of the organisations chosen by the Chartered Accountants and the money will be put to good use. It is great to see the Cork Society take their Corporate Social Responsibility so seriously, we really see partnering with organisations like them as the way forward for successful fundraising” Cork Simon’s Acting Director, Aaron O’Connell, described the Firewalkers as “brave and courageous”. He said, “This is the kind of creativity and imagination we need to help tackle homelessness effectively. The Firewalkers believed in themselves – and by doing so showed that they believe in people. A little bit of confidence in others – a belief that people can and do overcome the traumatic impacts of homelessness, can go a long way in helping make that happen.” Thanking everyone who participated and supported the Firewalk, Anthony Reidy Chairman Chartered Accountants

Home & G arden Are we in “Gardeners Heaven”? What more could a gardener ask for at this time of year? The sun is shining and everything’s growing. Happy days are here again! We'll try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower Garden Continue sowing hardy annuals wherever there is a need for colour; Sow extra in spare ground for cutting. Mulch lilies outdoors with compost, and feed those growing in pots. Watch out for black fly on philadelphus, elders and other shrubs, and spray.

supports for runner and climbing French beans. Thin out autumn raspberry canes to 10cm(4in) apart, and tie in as they grow.

Lawns & Hedges Continue mowing, twice weekly, for a fine finish if the grass is growing vigorously.

Tuck straw or special mats around strawberry plants to keep the fruit clean; do this before plants begin to sprawl. Remove grease bands from fruit trees and burn. Cut asparagus spears regularly, but not from new plants. Remove flowers from perpetual strawberries for heavier crops later in the year. Sow kohlrabi little and often, and every 3-4 weeks for young tender crops. Support peas before they make their first tendrils. Erect

Remove greenhouse insulation; apply a light speckle of shading to the glass. Start feeding early tomatoes, and continue removing sideshoots. Sow runner and climbing French beans in pots for planting out in 3-4 weeks time. Sow surplus half-hardy annuals for greenhouse pot-plants. Out and About

with Fergus O’Leary When, for my sins, it was my job to keep the town clean, there was one thing that always used to depress me. I’d bowl into work to discover that some bright spark had put in the glass on the bus shelter or the phone box or both. Another favourite trick was to upturn a flower tub or set light to a litter bin. It used to take all the good out of the day. And the question I always asked, what everybody always asked was “ What do they get out of it?” Vandalism is so pointless. So I thought that I would find out if any proper studies had been conducted into it and indeed I found a good number of papers had been submitted to various symposia by knowledgeable academics. Now, you have to bear in mind that these are people who would never use one word when ten would do so I have had to précis things up (or is it down?). To get a handle on it you have to put vandalism into various categories. Firstly there is vandalism committed by someone who did not know the consequences of what they did. The nearest I can get to that is that if your two year old child decided to embellish your newly decorated bedroom wall with your favourite lipstick whilst the effect is the same as vandalism the intent is not there, thus strictly speaking it isn’t vandalism. How this applies in the grown up world I couldn’t honestly see but I guess there is a point there somewhere. Next you have vandalism out of revenge or protest. Reprehensible and criminal it is but at least you have a clear motive.

Call: 021 455 5614

Graffiti is said by some to have artistic merit but if it is applied to property without the owner’s permission then it is vandalism. However, it is possible to again to see motive. Lastly we come to wanton destruction. Where is this carried out? Absolutely anywhere By whom? Data from the States says that of those apprehended seventy percent were under twenty five and of these ninety percent were male. They came from all social backgrounds. Why did they do it? There is no one clear answer to this. So after all the research that was done we are back to square one. Out there are people who get their kicks from the act of destruction itself and all we can do is clear up after them. What a depressing thought. PASSAGE WEST LIBRARY Opening hours- Tues, Thurs, Fri 2pm to 6pm Saturday 10.30am to 1pm a photocopier is now available for public use in the library during opening hours The knitting and craft group meet every Thursday from 2.30 onwards all welcome Why not join? Adults - 2.50 children - 50c" Cantate “Cantate” is lively group of mixed voices formed in 2006 and we perform a varied repertoire including rock n’ roll, songs from the musicals and contemporary classics – something to appeal to all ages. Blackrock man meets community highlighted in Trocaire's Lenten Campaign and reminds people to return their Trocaire boxes Blackrock man, John Smith, is reminding people to return their Trocaire boxes after travelling to La Confianza in north Honduras to meet the community whose struggle for land is highlighted in this year's Trocaire Lenten campaign. John travelled to north Honduras last year and spent time with members of the community where he found out about their struggle to get land and earn a living. Trocaire is supporting La Confianza's struggle for land, safety and a peaceful existence. The organisation has already helped 62,000 Honduran families to obtain legal ownership of land, so they can earn a living, send children to school and no longer face hunger. Earlier this year events took a turn for the worse as the community was attacked once more and Digna's family was threatened. “The family was held at gunpoint in January by the landlord’s army in a shocking turn of events," explained John. "Digna was so traumatised by this ordeal that she became very quiet for some time, while her brother Umberto was hysterical with fear. This intimidation must stop which is why Trocaire’s campaign is so important this year. This Lent Irish people have been raising awareness and writing to the Honduran government in support of Digna's community. A Date for Your Diary: 15th May 2011. We are delighted to announce that Fr. Peter McVerry will be here with us in Holy Cross Church, Mahon, on Sunday 15th May, 2011. He will speak from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. this will include time for questions and comments. He has spent over 30 years working for and championing the cause of homeless young people in Dublin. This is part of our Ministry Sunday celebrations. Please tell all your friends and everyone is welcome. Fr. Peter McVerry SJ has been working with Dublin’s young homeless for more than 30 years. During this time he has campaigned tirelessly for the rights of these young people. In 1979, Fr. McVerry opened a hostel to address the urgent need for accommodation for young homeless people. Four years later he set up a charity called The Arrupe Society, to provide further housing and support. Renamed in 2005 as Peter McVerry Trust, the charity has progressed from providing a three bedroom flat in Ballymun to today’s wide range of services catering for the diverse needs of young homeless people. Some services include an open access service, supported accommodation, drug services, under 18s hostels and apartments across the city to offer longerterm housing for those ready to live independently.

How to Buy, Restore and Sell a Vintage Car Vintage cars have always held the interest of many people. That interest consists of, for most of us, reading about and going to car shows in order to satisfy that interest. Others buy that old car and participate in car club events. Still others restore these classics of the open road. Okay, you may ask, where do I start to buy, restore and sell a vintage car?

Steps Establish a budget for the project car before you ever start the search for the vintage vehicle. You can easily let the price of the vehicle get out of control and become a financial disaster for you without knowing what you can realistically spend. Decide how much to allow for the base purchase, restoration process and the final cost of the project. This

24 - Thur 28 Apr '11

is the time to be brutally honest with yourself and not let your love for the vehicle get out of control. There are realities of the market to consider. Find the project car you want to take on. You will most likely find your vintage car through one of several sources. Classic car clubs are a likely resource. Most have a newsletter that lets members post vehicles they have for sale as well as parts

from projects that they no longer need. Many classic car auctions offer completed cars and there are also flea markets associated with many of them. Another great source is auctions of what are called "barn finds." These are vehicles that have been stored and will need restoration. Vintage or classic car magazines and websites are other great sources. Buy the vintage car at a price that allows you to restore and sell the vehicle to pave the way to the next project. You need to know your market. Do your research before you buy. Tme spent researching the costs will lead to a successful conclusion. Start the restoration process. This is where your research and personal knowledge comes into to play. You are most likely going to part the car out to specialists in the field of auto restoration, unless you are a master mechanic and have a shop full of tools, lifts and a paint booth. You need to be honest as to your mechanical skill level. Know when and what to part out for the rebuild. Establish a good relationship with

the businesses that you will deal with on the car restoration. Spend some time with them and seek out past customers. This way you will see what they have to say of their experience with the business. Bottom line, be an active and participating member of the restoration team. Not only will it enhance your experience, it will help keep track of the expenses. Remember, you do still have to sell the car. Find a buyer. Sold is what you are looking to hear. Not just sold, but sold for a profit. To do that, you are going to use the same process you used in buying to sell the vintage car. Use classic car clubs dedicated to your make in order to sell your restored vehicle. Go to club meetings and shows. Let it be known that you have a vehicle for sale or coming up for sale.

Don't forget to advertise on their be the methods of selling your vehicle. websites and in newsletters. Classic car shows and auto Each step of establishing your auctions are other ways of selling budget, doing your research, your car. Enter your car with its buying at a price that fits into documentation on the restoration that budget and working with process as part of the display. Let qualified auto specialists, leads to a successful buying, restoration it be known the car is for sale. DOUGLAS CINEMA, Link Road,of Douglas, Cork. and selling your vintage car. to cool completely. When the pepper is cooled down take skin off the pepper and take out all the seeds out. Place the pepper in a pan and add the sugar and 1oz of cream. Blend until smooth with a hand blender and season to taste, Then gently warm it up. For the monkfish you preheat pan and add the olive oil and butter. Then place the monkfish into the pan and seared all over. Season lightly and cook for about 8to 10mins . Now the best way to cook risotto is to put the cup of risotto in a bowl and add hot vegetable stock to cover the risotto. Then cover the bowl

with clingfilm and let to rest for 20mins. Then put the risotto in a pan and add one more cup of stock and cook gently, stirring, until the vegetable is absorbed. Then add your cooked smoked vision and cream and stir it all in by now the Alberio rice is tender but with a little bit too it. Now place your vision risotto on the plat and then put your pan seared monkfish on top of the risotto and drizzle the roasted red pepper sauce over the monkfish and serve.

TRAMORE ATHLETIC AFC Umbro U13 Division 2 Tramore Athletic 9 Bandon The Tramore Athletic U13s astonishing recent goal scoring exploits continued on Saturday morning at Tramore Park when they defeated Bandon by nine goals to nil. This was the Tramore side’s seventeenth goal in their last two games and their thirty eight league goal in total to cement their place firmly on top of Umbro Division 2 and they now look well set for a fully deserved promotion and a possible championship win. This game was not only littered with goals but they were goals of exceptional quality however the strikes from Cian McCarthy and Liam Dineen are due special praise and were both worthy of winning any ‘goal of the season’

competition. On a day when every Tramore player was at the height of their form it is nigh on impossible to pick out individuals however the contributions of Jacob Morris, Edozie Ogbene and David Hurley deserve special mention for not only their overall performance but for their contributions to each of Tramore’s goals in this special performance.

Umbro U11 Division 1

Tramore Athletic 1 Douglas Hall 1 A one all draw at Tramore Park on Saturday morning meant it finished honours even in the U11 local derby between Tramore Athletic and Douglas Hall. As the score line suggests this was a most even contest with both sides enjoying periods of dominance

Nearing the end of the season the three adult teams are involved in a race for league honours. The Seniors travelled to Mayfield Pk on Friday night last and came away with a point. A point gained or two points lost only time will tell, Mayfield opened the scoring and despite some good football the ‘Hall were one down at half time. Second half substitute Mark Murphy headed home a Gary Drennan corner 10 mins into the second half. Mayfield defended well and with minutes remaining Adrian O’Donovan made a crucial stop in the ‘Hall goal. Next up is the Beamish Cup Quarter Final on Wednesday, May 4th The MSL Juniors put two good performances together to pick up six points from games in Everton Pk & Ringmahon Pk. On Tuesday night Mark Rearden & Killian Murphy had the ‘Hall two up at half time. As expected Everton came back into the game and forced the play and Tom Corcoran’s men were happy to see out the game on a 2-1 score line. On Sunday morning Mark Rearden put the ‘Hall one up, Ringmahon hit back either side of half time to lead 2-1. However Derek O’Donovan equalised before Kevin Kelleher hit what proved to be the winner. There are three tough games left home and away to Rockmount and home to Corinthians. The team are in a good position and with some good results could reclaim the league trophy for the third time in four years. The AUL Juniors also put in two good away results winning 6-0 & 5-0 away to Richmond & Grangevale respectively. With so many ex Douglas Hall players now with Grangevale this was a very competitive game. Scoreless at half time the game turned in five second half minutes when Eoin Murphy put the ‘Hall one up, this was followed by a red card for Grangevale. A more youthful ‘Hall side pushed on and further goals from Murphy, Rory O’Sullivan, Jason Martin & Paul Murphy secured the points. Next Thursday’s game at home to UCC kicks off at 6:45 before title contenders Kilreen Celtic visit Moneygourney on Thursday May 5th in what could well be a league decider. Tickets for the 40th Anniversary Dinner Dance are on sale; contact Colm Lyons 087-2352551

and also enduring spells where last ditch defending was required to maintain their share of the spoils. Douglas Hall edged the first period and went in at the break a goal to the good however Tramore quickly responded in the second half with a well worked goal which Alex Connolly finished. There were chances at both ends for each side to win but it would have been cruel were either side to lose this contest and the draw at the final whistle was the fairest result. The outstanding Mathew Coughlan and Cian Purcell shared the ‘man of the match award’ for Tramore. The Tramore Athletic Annual

General Meeting is fast approaching. Any Member who wishes to place a motion for discussion before the A.G.M. is kindly asked to contact a member of the Management Committee in order for the motion to be placed on the agenda of the meeting. The Tramore Athletic Soccertots training camp continues this Sunday morning in Tramore Park from 10am for boys and girls aged 6-10. Learn new football skills in a fun and friendly atmosphere under the watchful supervision of qualified coaches.

G.A.A. FOCUS Snippets from the Local and National Scene By Pat Harrington An interview given by Director of Hurling Paudie Butler in the Irish Examiner is what prompted me to write this article. Paudie, who is at the end of his tenure, is a hugely enthusiastic man who has a great grá for the game. Growing up, my brother and I played hurling in Canty’s field; we made two goalmouths and struck the ball to each other. I played competitive hurling at nine years of age in the Lough Street Leagues. These games attracted very big turnouts as there was little else on. Following the Street Leagues underage was the natural progression. Later I moved to Redmonds playing junior B and junior A and finally playing with Douglas. I would not have been a good add for the promotion of the game as I neglected / refused to wear a helmet. Between my face and my knuckles there was no shortage of scars – as I said, not a good add for hurling. It is now very important and not before time that the helmet with face guard is compulsory. Parents with little or no knowledge of hurling are bound to have fears. At the end of my playing days I took up coaching. To my way of thinking established practices by some underage coaches left a lot to be desired. Games were played using big numbers of players and this brought about a situation which meant the survival of the best. Sadly at this level the best you will always see on the field and the weaker players with the minimum amount of game time spend most of their time on the sideline. In fairness to all it is a difficult balancing act to handle. I attended various courses and went to view Cork intercounty teams in training. Here I learned the huge importance in variety of methods. An area I take strong exception to is having to throw down the hurleys for a few weeks while the football section trains. Street Leagues and their importance A few years ago one senior club decided against maintaining a Street Leagues section and duly paid the price. Clubs cannot afford to pay lip service to hurling while neglecting the vital Street Leagues section. In such circumstances hurling may survive short term, but in the long term the club will no doubt pay a high price and hurling will suffer. The fall-out from hurling in some clubs at underage level is frightening and the cause of this is simply the game is not being promoted. The Irish Examiner Saturday edition has been rejigged; perhaps they felt they were standing still and the paper needed an upgrade. There are clubs who could take example from The Examiner. By this I mean some are standing still and appear to have accepted their lot. After success in the ‘80s Midleton took their eye off the ball and paid the price. Now they have addressed the problem and are once 28 - Thur 28 Apr '11

again competing at all levels in hurling. You get out of sport what you put into it. A club may participate in hurling and be happy to complete their programme; sadly that is not enough. Work must be put in on the training ground. While the game is not complicated it requires hours of practice. Each management team must put in the hours and essentially must be supported by the club. Dublin have qualified for the hurling league final for the first time since 1946. They have some talented hurlers and lost just one game in the current campaign – that against Galway, shooting 19 wides on the same day. They drew with Kilkenny and beat Tipperary, Offaly, Cork and Wexford. They also drew with Waterford. This certainly demonstrates consistency. They had good support for the game against Cork. A lot of money is being ploughed into Dublin hurling and now perhaps the fruits of their labours are coming to the fore. Walsh Management Text messages received at C103fm were not very complementary of Denis Walsh’s management. One person even suggested we bring back Gerald McCarthy. Cork people have been reared on hurling success’ four defeats by a point in each game does not go down well with supporters. To be fair Walsh has unearthed some new talent – Luke Farrell, gifted control. Conor Lehane showed good touch against Dublin, Pa Cronin is well worth his place at midfield and McDonnell is a great find at corner back. The team’s Achilles Heel is their failure to score goals. I don’t think it is all doom and gloom but I feel is now time to start settling on his best fifteen. For Cork to get goals it is vital that the inside forwards get the ball in quickly to them. Transport? In the programme for the Cork vs. Kerry under 21 Munster final it was announced that there would be transport (buses) available for the four all-Ireland semi-finalists. I understand that sponsors Cadburys were to organise this. That position did not materialize for the trip to Ennis. There was a C.I.E. bus travelling to Limerick and Ennis on the night; unfortunately there was no way out of Ennis at the time required that night for those without their own transport. Would Limerick not have been a more appropriate venue? Texts Two text messages I received at full time in the Cork vs. Dublin hurling match – from a Dub of course, “What’s da score”? And later “Ten years listening to ya – Cork dis and dat and the Dubz Dotsie was brill. I will sleep well. Plan your holidays for Sept as u will be doing f--k all else” Sure is not everyone not entitled to their day in the sun? Talk more next week, Pat.
