The Weather The weather at the weekend turned into a bit of an anti-climax after a very promising couple of weeks of weather. As you can see from the image of Garrettstown Beach on our cover that was taken on Saturday evening last, it looks like paradise, I wondered if I was in the same country when I looked out my window on Sunday, morning to see the rain bucketing down and the trees bending in the wind! Ah well, global warming I guess. At least the kids got some bit of a break for the holiday period as far as the weather is concerned. I wonder have we had our ‘summer ‘or are better things to come??? Waltzing Competition I was at Douglas GAA Club last Friday night for the Waltzing Competition organised by our own Phil Goodman of the Douglas Young at Heart Group. It was great to see a good turn out and the enjoyment on the faces on those taking part. Well done to all. HOPE Foundation Munster Rugby stars Keith Earls, Lifeimi Mafi and Conor Murray were on hand to help The Hope Foundation launch “HOPE U CAN PAINT”, the trip that promises the journey of a lifetime from October 8th to 15th. Participants will paint some of the children's crèches and homes in Calcutta and will also visit a number of HOPE’s Projects aimed at giving street and slum children a brighter future. A unique aspect of this journey is the visits to HOPE’s projects; these will offer a chance for participants to see firsthand where their fundraising money is being used. As well as painting, these visits will give volunteers the opportunity to spend some time with the children who live in the HOPE homes and who attend other projects like schools, medical facilities and craft cooperatives. Each participant is asked to fundraise €3,500/£3,000 between now and end September to take part in the trip. Money raised will go towards The Hope Foundation’s projects, changing lives. Set up in 1999 to raise funds for one girls’ home, The Hope Foundation now works with 16 Indian NGO partners to help thousands of children from the streets and slums, improve their quality of life and give them a better future. Currently funding over 60 projects, HOPE reaches out to the most forgotten; offering protection, healthcare, nutrition, education, rehabilitation and a family for life. To date HOPE has reached out to almost 25,000 children through education alone and hundreds of thousands more through primary
healthcare, in partnership with Irish Aid. HOPE U CAN PAINT offers an unforgettable opportunity to see fundraising in action and then volunteer a little time to help make a difference. Participants will never forget their time with the children of Calcutta who have been given so little but have so much joy to share. To sign up for HOPE U CAN PAINT (8th – 15th October) or for further information please contact Susan on (021) 4292990 or susan@hopefoundation.ie. For further

Family Ties Aurelia Trust Firstly I would like to thank you for your generous donation to Aurelia Trust last year. Once again we are fundraising for this worthy cause. I have been involved with Aurelia Trust, a charity that helps support young adults aged between I6 and 34 years in Romania, for the past six years; These young adults have been institutionalized most of their lives and as a result all aspects of their development has been affected. In June of this year I will travel with approximately 20 other volunteers, including my daughter Michelle to Romania to spend seven days with these young people. During our time in Romania we help to facilitate a summer camp, called “The Tabera” for these young people. This summer camp allows the young adults to spend time at a beach, away form their usual residential or housing units. They love • Dorothy McSweeney from The Douglas this opportunity to interact Social Committee presenting a cheque for freely with one another 7000 from the recent fundraising Waxing Night to Club Chairman Fergal Hayes as well as enjoying the
excitement of the beach. During the seven days we organise various activities to suit the needs of each person. These activities vary from building. sand castles or massage therapy (for those who have limited ability) to swimming in the sea, organising races and many other games. This summer camp is essential for their physical, mental and emotional development. Over the past six years that I have been involved I have witnessed many positive changes in the lives of these young adults. These changes have been brought about by their involvement in the summer camps as well as an improvement in their living standards. These changes would not have been possible without the support of Aurelia Trust. Every volunteer pays their own flights and accommodation allowing all money fundraised to go directly to the charity. Many people have generously given their time and expertise to help the charity and as a result we have minimum administration costs. The money we raise each year pays for the summer camp as well as the upkeep of these young people’s homes. So I would like to thank you for your time and take this opportunity to inform you we are having a fundraising table quiz on Thursday 5th May in Douglas G.A.A Club. I would appreciate any donation or participation you may be able to give to this fundraising event. Yours Sincerely Margaret Kennedy, 087 995 6050 • Margaret and Michelle off the Romania in JUne

Have you been to Arizona ? It is a State I would love to visit but until such time it is hard to comment or pass judgment on what it’s like to live there. One can only assume that its history reflects the power, the triumph, the struggle for justice and the mundane reality of humane nature as much as anywhere else. In this weeks poem Thomas Clancy, of Leixlip Co. Kildare, Ireland challenges the conservative ideology that abounds in our political world. Arizona Arizona a Nation with a turbulent past Gateway to the States from the teaming South A passport to life and freedom at last Nation of contradictions; that no one cares about English speaking orders to a Spanish workforce Living in poverty and existence, thread bare Who don’t affiliate or regard it as home Physically in Arizona, mentally elsewhere This social upheaval happened before When Native Americans were stripped of their wealth Replaced by white settlers with ruthless force It’s happening again, by emigrant stealth The land of the free can scarcely be found When one sees the land and the homes of the Braves Democracy in name and not on the ground A nation of battlefields and unmarked graves Here laws are enforced with an iron fist A people indoctrinated in just right and wrong No leeway allowed for the old grey mist Its this blind allegiance that make her so strong Route 66 old highway to the west Replaced by 1/ 40 more haste, more loads Commerce races through this state, not stopping to rest Industry don’t live here just uses her roads The climate’s ideal, the, scenery breathtaking With rivers and mountains and Canyons abound But without popular allegiance this nation will weaken Deep thoughts in their hearts’ but mouths make no sound The nation of immigrants and Navajo confinedWill one day waken from their Silent sleep? And take this great land and declare it their own Entrusting Arizona to their, children, this time to keep Thomas Clancy Send your poem to ‘The Poetry Corner’ / Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas or you can email it direct to ronniemcginn@ eircom.net. If possible keep your poem to 20 lines. You may choose any subject you like, in any form you like as long as it’s original. We look forward to hearing from you. RonnieMcGinn

Brainteazer Last Weeks Teazer Ben Bright was a smart kid. He bet all the other kids in his class that they couldn’t stick a pin in a fully inflated balloon without busting it. He was right, they couldn’t. Each loser had to give him their lunch money and by the end of the day he was quite rich. The other kids insisted that the trick
was quite impossible but Ben did it easily. How ?
Last Week’s Answer He stuck a small piece of sticky tape to the balloon and pushed the pin through the tape (Leaving it in)
This Week’s Teazer Young Ben Bright had another good idea. He bet his friends that they couldn’t take hold of the ends of a piece of string and, without letting go, tie a knot in the middle of the string. After they had failed miserably he showed how it was done. What did he do ?

Cllr Kieran McCarthy
Cork City’s Burial Places Cllr Kieran McCarthy has welcomed Cork City Council’s recently published Cork City’s Burial Places (edited by Ciara Brett). This study was prompted by an increase in planning applications in or adjacent to sites of burial grounds. Within the city’s urban landscape many sites are buried beneath buildings or may even extend beyond their current boundaries. Fifty-five burial sites were identified ranging from churchyards, churches containing vaults, private burial grounds of religious houses and the military, stray find spots of skeletal remains to large modern cemeteries. Temple Hill Burial Ground at Ballintemple is one of the burial grounds addressed in the report. A Knights Templar church was built at Ballintemple in 1392, so burials may have been started about that time. However, the earliest insitu headstone recorded dates from the mideighteenth century. Both Catholic and Protestant denominations are buried within the graveyard. The headstones are concentrated to the west of the site indicating that perhaps those on the east have been removed except for low-lying inscriptions. Cllr McCarthy noted “the project Cork City’s Burial Places will enhance our knowledge of the past societies and individuals who developed the city and will allow for a more informative management of the burial grounds by those who are shaping our city today.” Cork City’s Burial Places is free and available from the Planning and Development Directorate, City Hall. Lusitania Tragedy to be remembered in Cobh The commemoration of the 96th Anniversary of the sinking of the Lusitania will take place in Cobh on Sunday 8th May. Organised by Cobh Tourism the ceremonies are fitting memorials to all those who lost their lives on that fateful war time voyage. The ceremony commences at the Lusitania graves in the Old Church Cemetery just outside Cobh at 1.45 pm. Following prayers, musical honours by St. Colman’s Pipe Band and the Commodore Male Voice Choir and the laying of wreaths, the proceedings move to Cobh Town Centre. A Parade led by a Colour Party from the O.N.E. and representatives of civic, maritime and historical groups will leave from the Old Town Hall on Lynch’s Quay at 2.30pm to the Lusitania Peace Memorial in Casement Square. Further ceremonies will take place here including a wreath laying ceremony. Of special significance this year will be the presence of Lady Loder of Eyrefield Stud in Co. Kildare who will lay a wreath in memory of the Warren Pearl family. Band of the Southern Command Cobh Tourism is delighted to announce that the Band of 1 Southern Brigade (Band of the Southern Command) will perform on the Victorian Bandstand in The Promenade immediately after the Lusitania Commemoration (approx. 3.30pm) on Sunday 8th May. This is the first of three recitals by the band in Cobh this summer and other International Brass and Reed bands have also added Cobh to their tour itineraries.

DENTURES What is clinical dental technician (denturist)? A clinical dental technician (denturist) is qualified dental health care professional who provides full and partial dentures to patients independent of a dentist. The difference between a clinical dental technician and dental technician (mechanic) are many but one of the most important is that a clinical dental technician is highly trained in the recognition of oral pathology. This is very important as some oral conditions can indicate other health problems. Even though you may have no teeth left a yearly oral examination is advised to maintain good oral and general health. A clinical dental technician will always take a medical and dental history and perform a full oral examination and refer when appropriate. A clinical dental technician will provide you with full treatment plan and costings before treatment commences. A clinical dental technician will construct your dentures on the premises and no third party is involved i.e. an outside dental laboratory. This ensures that you receive the most natural dentures available. The following is a list of a clinical dental technician duties: 1. Take a detailed medical and dental history 2. Perform clinical and technical procedures to provide dentures and undertake clinical examinations
3.
Distinguish the difference between normal and abnormal consequences of ageing 4. Recognize abnormal oral tissue and related underlying structures and make appropriate referrals 5. Seizures What is a seizure? A seizure (also called a ‘fit’ or convulsion) occurs when there is a ‘disruption’ or a brief break in the electrical activity between the neurones (specialised brain cells) in the brain. There are many different types of seizures, varying from absence seizures that look as if a person is staring into space, to more obvious convulsions that involve the entire body. Some people only have one seizure in their lifetime while others may have many. Most seizures last less than five minutes. Seizures are not always a sign of epilepsy (a medical condition that causes seizures). They may be caused by brain injury or infection, fever,

drugs or excessive alcohol use. The cause of a seizure may not always be obvious. Seizures are often very frightening for the observer, especially if they have never seen one before. Brain damage resulting from a seizure is very rare.
Types of seizures Below are some common types of generalised seizures. Tonic clonic – The person may cry out (wail) before losing awareness (consciousness). Their entire body stiffens and starts shaking or jerking violently. They may fall to the ground and may injure themselves as a result. Their eyes may roll back (so you can only see the white part) and they may turn blue around the lips or in the face. • Absence – The person may have a fixed gaze; as if a person is staring into
Diabetes, what do I do now?
space or their eyelids may ‘flicker’. There is no other obvious jerking. They do not respond when you talk to them. •Myoclonic – Twitching, jerking or ‘tremor’ is seen in one or more limbs. The person may be awake. Febrile convulsion/seizure – Happens in children aged between six months and six years due to a sudden change in temperature (when they have a fever). This seizure may appear like a tonic clonic seizure.
How can I help? There are some things you can do to help a person who is having a seizure: •Remember to stay calm. • Do NOT put anything in the person’s mouth (including your fingers) or give them anything to drink or eat (including any medication) until they have regained consciousness and are
We can help you with any health
fully awake and alert (not sleepy or confused). • Ensure the person cannot injure themselves – remove sharp or hard objects (if possible) from around the person and place something soft under their head. Do not try to restrain the person. Make sure you do not get injured if they are thrashing around. • Take note of what time the seizure began and time how long it goes for; if it is longer than five minutes or you are very worried and need help then call an ambulance. Place the person on their side once the seizure has subsided and their body has softened (it is stiff and rigid during a seizure). This helps the person breathe easier and allows the saliva to drain from the mouth. For more information on seizures talk to your G.P. or call Garvan at Lynch’s Pharmacy on 4366923.

Home & G arden Things to do This Week As we move into May everything is picking up pace. We'll try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.
Flower Garden Finish sowing hardy annual flowers outside. Later sowings will result in later blooms. Sprinkle general purpose fertiliser around clumps of spring-flowering bulbs. Ensure permanent shrubs and hedging are given a generous feed using this or rose fertiliser. Hoe it into the soil's surface and water in before covering with a mulch of garden compost. Place support frames over tall perennials, or those with a floppy habit. Remember to put eye guards on top of any canes
used. Prune back the flowering stems of hellebores, such as Helleborus argutifolius, as soon as blooms are past their best. Cut back to their base to make room for new shoots. If seedlings are required, leave a stem to set seed, then collect and sow it when ripe. Lightly trim off dead flowers of moss phlox, saxifrage, aubrieta and other alpines once they have faded. Excessive growth should also be trimmed to keep plants tidy. Rooted portions can be potted up separately.

Garden Competition Our Summer Gardening Competition is open to all our readers. You can win a prize every week from May to September. So get out the hoe and start now for a stunning summer garden. If your garden or any part of your garden is blooming, or just looking good, why not lets us have a photo. We would love to print it. If you have a neighbor with a nice garden who might be a bit shy, why not take a photo for them. Send your photo to Gardening, Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas. Cork . Or email to frontdesk@douglaspost.ie
Kitchen garden Crops to sow outside or under cloches during early May include dwarf French beans, beetroot, sprouting broccoli, Brussels sprouts, summer and savoy cabbage, cauliflower, ridge cucumbers, endive, kale, kohl rabi, lettuce, marrows, peas, radish, spinach, swede, sweet corn and turnips. Delay sowings if soil conditions are cold and wet. For an early crop of beans, sow French and runner beans in pots in the greenhouse or on a windowsill. Choose deep pots, if possible, sowing two seeds per pot, and thinning to leave the strongest seedling which is then planted outside in late May or June. Alternatively, sow directly outside under cloches in May or June for a slightly later crop

summer bedding plants. Thin out those in trays, or prick them out individually into pots.
Hanging Baskets Plant up baskets with fuchsias and tender perennials, then hang them in the greenhouse to develop.
Water Garden Plant up new aquatic baskets with water lilies and other pond plants. If you have large, overcrowded plants, now is a good time to divide them.
In General Water newly planted fruit trees, roses and shrubs regularly to help their root systems establish. Hoe borders once a week to prevent weed seedlings establishing. Buy young plants for pots and containers as well for bedding displays. Most need to be potted up into 7.5cm (3in) pots
and grown on in warm, bright conditions ready for planting out at the end of May. Be sure to acclimatise plants to cooler outdoor conditions before planting out.
Don't be lulled into a false sense of security by warmer days. While the weather continues to be unpredictable, it pays to take precautions.

NEW LOOK HONDA ACCORD The Honda Accord 2011 gets a new look; is more ecofriendly and costs less The revamped Honda Accord includes refreshed looks, improved driving comfort, lower CO2 emissions, improved fuel consumption and lower prices. The latest Honda Accord, which arrives in Ireland this week, also introduces minor changes to safety, ride and handling improvements, as well as exterior and interior refinements. Five variations of the revamped Accord, all powered by Honda’s famous ‘whispering diesel’ 2.2 litre i-DTEC engine, will go on sale immediately and they are the entry grade ES, the sporty Type S and the luxury high spec EX options. 6-speed manual transmissions are standard across all grades and a 5 speed automatic transmission option is available for both Type S and EX grades only. The introduction of a more powerful Type S option, delivering 180ps, is planned for late summer. Petrol units will continue to feature in the price list but will be available to special order only. The big news on the new Accord is the reduction in CO2 emissions,
which coupled with engine refinements dramatically creates lower retail pricing and delivers reduced annual road tax and fuel consumption costs. The outcome is a significant price reduction for both the ES and Type S manual transmission options reaching a height of €3,297 on the 2.2 Type S. In addition, both options now fall into the B tax band which culminates in an annual road tax tariff of €156. Frank Kennedy, Sales and Marketing Director of Universal Honda, said: “The introduction of this revamped Accord is very significant. It highlights the critical importance and subsequent benefit of delivering lower CO2 emissions in the context of local environmental policy. This trend will continue across the Honda range over the coming months and years’.
Fuel Economy and Emission Improvements The refined 2.2 litre150ps i-DTEC diesel engine has had internal frictional losses reduced to improve economy and emissions, resulting in
Blackwater Motors
improved emissions. These internal changes have been combined with a host of under-body aerodynamic aids, including larger front air dam, under-floor and a rear sub-frame cover. Honda’s engineers have also reduced frictional losses in the wheels and tyres with low friction wheel bearings and reduced rolling resistance tyres. The automatic models have also benefitted from minimised functional losses in the gearbox and optimised ratios to improve economy and emissions
Exterior and Interior The Accord’s revised exterior styling includes small but noticeable changes to the headlights and bumpers. The headlights have been given a cleaner, crisper appearance with the previously amber indicators now in a clear finish. The grille has been subtly remodelled for a sportier look. At the rear, the lights are finished in light red and the styling has a more rounded finish than its predecessor. Three new colours have been added to the range: Alabaster Silver, Graphite Lustre and
Celestial Blue Pear. New seat materials and door linings change the ambiance of the interior of the car. Leather upholstery is standard on EX and Type S-180ps models.
Driving comfort Engineers from Japan worked with colleagues in Germany and UK to further refine the dampers of the Accord to make them suitable for the vast range of road conditions found in Europe. A quieter cabin has been achieved with the adoption of higher density foam under the bonnet and dash board areas; a revised under-floor insulation teamed with additional sound deadening shields and exhaust manifold cover of the diesel engine and a O.9mm increase in the thickness of the rear window glass, all resulting in an improvement of driver and passenger experience.
Conclusion Honda Accord 2011 goes on sale from this week through Honda Main Dealers nationwide. Full details on www.honda.ie

This Friday and Saturday will see Joe Rooney perform in the City Limits. Doors 9pm and admission is 15 euros. Joe Rooney is best known from his roles in Killinaskully & Fr Ted. After a nationwide tour with Pat Shortt in 2004, Joe Rooney embarked on his own tour culminating in a sell out show in Vicar St. He starred in the hit RTE comedy series, "Killinaskully" as the character "Timmy Higgins" and also Joe is probably best known for his role as Father Damo in the "Father Ted" series. Ringo Starr is working on a semi-autobiographical album about his life in his hometown of Liverpool. The Beatles drummer said, "I am actually making a record about Liverpool. It's about me and Liverpool. It's like I've decided to do mini-autobiographies, instead of writing a book, I'm doing it on record." "Right now, I'd rather put it quickly in a song, snippets of part of my life. Everybody talks about the Cavern Club, but in this new track, I actually mention the Iron Door, which was a much better club, it was more of a real rock club." However, Starr revealed he's not keen on the idea of writing a book about his life. "I have been offered autobiographies but they only really wanna know about is those eight years in The Beatles and there would be three volumes before I even got to that." Meanwhile Sir Paul McCartney is set to reissue two of his classic solo albums. His debut solo record, 'McCartney' from 1970 and 1980's 'McCartney II' will be rereleased on June 13th with bonus material. Red Hot Chili Peppers are set to release the long awaited follow up to their 2006 album 'Stadium Arcadium'. Drummer, Chad Smith, admitted that the record is scheduled for a release at the end of August. "It's been going good. We got lots of songs, we're just choosing the ones that are gonna be on the album. It sounds great." Smith, who is currently touring with solo project Chad Smith's Bombastic Meatballs, said that new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer has had a large influence on the sound of the new material. "He brought a lot to the table, he's an excellent writer". The album is still officially untitled, although the band previously announced a working title, 'Dr Johnny Skinz's Disproportionately Rambunctious Polar Express Machine-head'. Hip hop legends Naughty By Nature and electro musician Hudson Mohawke are among those announced today to play at CastlePalooza festival at Tullamore's Charleville Castle overt the August Bank Holiday weekend. There'll be up to 50 acts performing over three days at the intimite festival, which is limited to 3000 punters. Its €89 for 3day camping or €74 for a two day camping ticket. After recent reports that Nadine, Sarah, Kimberly and Nicola were getting impatient waiting for Cheryl Cole's scheduled to clear and might soon reconvene as a foursome, fans will be pleased to hear that the 2012 reunion will see all five girls perform together again. Shaw said, "The girls are still getting on great, they speak all the time, and that includes Cheryl and Nadine with the other girls...Cheryl is keen to get back with the girls and is planning something which could be a one-off or some gigs." 24 - Thur 05 May '11

The prospect of a new album still remains a long way off, however, as Cheryl is still touted to join the new US X Factor which will be kicking off next year. Meanwhile, Kimberly Walsh and Sarah Harding are making the crossover into TV and acting, and Nadine Coyle is set to continue her solo career having changed management after the her debut 'Insatiable' flopped on release last year. Nicola Roberts is the latest to start work on a solo album, and is reportedly working with Diplo & Switch, who recently produced Beyoncé's hot new single 'Who Run The World (Girls)'. A track entitled 'Dance to the Beat of My Drum' is expected to be her first solo release. Finally, 50 Cent is to headline a brand new one day music festival at the Regional Sports Centre, Waterford, on Saturday July 30th. Also playing the new Waterford Music Fest 2011 are Flo Rida, Shayne Ward, Wonderland, Smash Hits, DJ Ahmed and Venem, with more acts to be announced over the coming weeks. One lucky local band will also bag a spot of the bill by winning a Battle of the Bands competition. CHOCOLATE ROSE GERANIUM RASPBERRY TART
a saucepan, combine the milk and rose geranium leaves, bring just to a simmer and set aside to cool. Strain the milk through a sieve into a bowl (discard the rose geranium leaves). Add the sugar, flour and salt and whisk until smooth. Transfer to a saucepan and cook over moderate heat, whisking, until mixture is hot and begins to thicken. Remove from the heat and whisk 1 cup of the hot liquid into the bowl with the eggs. Whisk egg mixture back into the saucepan. Reduce the heat to moderately low and cook the custard, whisking, until thickened. Remove from the heat and stir in the rose water and butter. Strain through a sieve into a shallow bowl, place a piece of plastic wrap directly on the surface and let cool. Chill for at least 1 hour, or until cold. Make the crust: In a bowl, blend the crumbs and butter. Coat the bottom and sides of a 10-inch tart pan with vegetable spray and press the crumb mixture into the sides and bottom of the pan. Chill while melting the chocolate. Pour a thin layer of the chocolate over the bottom of the crust and return it to the refrigerator until ready to assemble tart. To assemble: Spread the custard in an even layer in the crust, arrange the raspberries on top and garnish with the rose geranium leaves. Serves 6 to 8.
For the rose geranium custard: 2 large eggs 2 cups milk 4 large rose geranium leaves 2/3 cup sugar 1/3 cup flour 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/2 tsp rose water, available at specialty or health-food stores 1 Tbsp unsalted butter For the crust: 1 1/2ups chocolate wafer crumbs 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 2 ounces bittersweet chocolate, melted 1 1/2nts raspberries

G.A.A. FOCUS Snippets from the Local and National Scene By Pat Harrington Club Member It is easy to write an article about a game viewed; who played well, who did not perform on the day. You may criticize the manager for not making the right moves, have a cut at the referee or knock the umpire for awarding a point when in fact the ball was wide – in your eyes. What is less easy to talk about is one’s involvement as a coach, a mentor and an administrator for a long period of time. I have become acquainted with people whose involvement has lasted for forty years plus. Now that is a lifetime commitment. I guess for some it is therapy. An interest outside of work can be a form of escapism. It is marvelous for a club to have people with such enthusiasm coupled with wide experience but the organisation continues to need new blood with fresh ideas. The organisation can grow on you; one can be out seven nights a week. There will always be a game, especially during the summer months. There is a downside to all this; the more you do the more you are expected to do. You may even get the idea that you cannot be done without. Such is a foolish thought. Sadly I have seen people who had a lot to offer move on. Sometimes over trivial issues whilst on other occasions it may be following more serious matters. Yes, I have seen people opt out who in my opinion had a lot to offer but were soured by happenings within the club and so were left drift. There is no doubt people will have had some good experiences and some not so positive. It is only the member who can decide what experiences he/she is looking for. At the same time the Club may not be on the same wavelength and this may cause disappointment to the club member. There are those club officials who may be in situ for a lifetime. Some will tell you it is a vocation, though perhaps the term vocation
is a tad over the top. Then there is a second group who are involved for the lifetime of their childrens’ involvement, whilst a third group may be around for a longer period but opt out because of a fallout, sadly never to be heard of again. Ours’ is an organisation where lots of lasting friendships are forged, the reverse of which is where arguments occur and fellow members go their separate ways, but that is all a part of life. Recession The recession is biting hard at the moment. The sad side for me is to witness our club members leave our shores for foreign lands – Often to Canada or Australia. Certainly some of these young men have gone to experience a great new adventure, for others it is a case of no work here. Pat Carroll is gone for 12 months and I believe John O’Keeffe is gone as well. Stephen Bermingham has secured a soccer contract in the United States. The latest to go is Frank Tobin. I know Frank since he was an eight year old playing Street Leagues. He tells me that there are seven or eight clubs where he is going. He added that whilst he is looking forward to playing football out there he would be reluctant to play hurling as reports indicate that it is a dangerous activity. Frank has a brother, Patrick who is already domiciled in Canada. One hopes to see him and all the other lads donning the black, white and green jersey again in the near future. Cork vs. Dublin I got one forecast correct – Cork to win – though the attendance was half of what I expected. Dublin once again bottled it. The missed frees were appalling at this level. This after the Cork media and pundits had tipped Dublin to succeed. One could say that Bernard Brogan going off was a turning point. Equally Cork had injuries going into the game, plus three players withdrawn injured during the game. Cork had no right to win this game; Dublin should never have lost it. Text A text I sent to my Dublin friend after the game ran: Ye have no bottle, ní raibh magarlaí acu – oh yes, and no free taker. I should have added ‘no silverware’!
Douglas Hall AFC The MSL Juniors captured the MSL Junior Premier Division title for the third time in four years with a 3-0 home win over Rockmount on Friday night last. A first half penalty by Mark Rearden was followed by second half goals from Derek O’Donovan and Sean Moynihan. These three points ensured that the title went to Douglas Hall and congratulations to Tom Corcoran and his assistants James O’Callaghan & Mark Barriscale. They have a cup Quarter Final on Tuesday (May 3rd) also at home to Rockmount. The Seniors moved into the semi finals of the Beamish Cup following a 3-1 home win over Carrigaline on Sunday morning. Gareth O’Donovan, Gerard O’Donovan & Mark Murphy were the scorers. Next Sunday morning in Moneygourney is a top of the table clash that will go along way to deciding this years MSL Premier Division title when Rockmount are the visitors. The ‘Hall are currently two points ahead of holders Rockmount so there is all to play for. The AUL Juniors face up to Kilreen Celtic in their final game knowing that a win will give them the Cork AUL Div 1A title. ‘Hall lead Kilreen by a point while Kilreen have two games left to play. This game takes place in Moneygourney on Thursday night, May 5th with a 7pm kick off. They have played each other twice this season with both games ending in a draw so a tight game is expected. College Corinthians AFC Schoolboys Section Under 11 It was a fantastic week for two of our under 11 teams as our Under 11 Premier and Under 11 First Division sides were both presented with their league championship trophies. The under 11 Premier side had won their league a number of weeks ago and completed their campaign this week with two league games against Lakewood and Mallow. They finished their league season unbeaten which is a fantastic achievement for any team and reflects great credit on the players, parents and the management team of Ray Couch, John Chandler and Tim Begley. However the main focus this week was on our under 11A side who were joint topcond in Division One and needed a point from their final game against Bandon to guarantee promotion or a victory which would give Fergus Murphy and Paul O’ Callaghan’s side the title. In the end they got the victory coming from behind to claim all three points and the Division One league title.
Division One Corinthian Boys A 3 Bandon 1
Showing terrific battling qualities as they have done all season, Corinthian’s came from behind to clinch the under 11 Division title in great style over the weekend. Playing against a fresh breeze in the first half Corinthian’s with Chris Healy, Oisin Lucais, Cillian Desmond and Paddy Kelleher strong at the back and Mathew Mc Cauliffe and Mark Brosnan working tirelessly in midfield were more than holding their own but Bandon were always competitive and they tokk the lead on twenty minutes when a Bandon striker scored from close range. Spurred on by this reverse Corinthian’s stormed back and were level within five minutes when following a great run Conor Shalloe fired home spectacularly from the edge of the area. With the breeze behind them in the second Corinthian’s got well on top and on 40 minutes following a great run
and cross from David Harrington, Davie Scott was on hand to put Corinthian’s in front. Corinthian’s were now well on top and with the introduction of fresh legs in the shape of Daniel Hurley, Rory Murphy and Bartik, they gained further momentum but it wasn’t until the final minute that they rubber stamped their advantage when in a quick breakaway Patrick O’ Callaghan was put through and he calmly slotted pas the advancing Bandon goal keeper. So a fantastic achievement by all concerned and a great under 11 double for the Club.
Premier Division Corinthian Boys 6 Lakewood 0
A terrific first half display of good attacking football by Corinthians put the game beyond a gallant Lakewood side by the break. Corinthians support play combined with quick two touch football had the visitors on the back foot from the outset. Strikers David O'Sullivan and Eoin Davis have been in awesome form of late that continued into this game with David O'Sullivan chalking up his hat-trick by half time. Corinthians made it difficult for themselves in the second half when they appeared to lose their shape allowing Lakewood to go close on a number of occasions. That said, Corinthians are by now well known for their battling skills. They took up the challange and pressed on to allow David O'Sullivan notch up his fourth goal of the game. Lakewood worked hard to get something from the game and in doing so left gaps that allowed Corinthians space to counter. Winger Joe Duggan capitalised from one such break to slot home neatly at the near post. Not to be out done by his strike partner, Eoin Davis netted with minutes to go to ensure his tally of goals continued to mount up. There were also good performances from James Holland, Eoin Murphy
Under 12 Premier Division Corinthian Boys 5 Mallow 3
Corinthians finished their league campaign with a 5 - 3 win over Mallow. Corinthians were 3 up in the first 20 minutes with goals from Mark O'Leary, David Dalton and Colin O'Brien. Great credit to Mallow to have it all square early in the second half. Corinthians found their composure again and finished with a brace of goals from Dean Swords and David Lynch. The teams meet again in the semi final of the Local Cup which should be an entertaining fixture. • Corinthian Boys Under 11 squad who won the Cork Schoolboys League Under 11 Premier Division.

• Douglas minor hurler Brian Cuthbert racing through the Duhallow defence.
Douglas GAA Douglas 1-16 Duhallow 0-10 Premier 1 Minor Hurling Championship: The Douglas minor hurlers began their championship campaign with an emphatic nine points win over Duhallow at Coachford on Sunday afternoon. Playing with the aid of a strong breeze in the first half Douglas were under pressure to build up a substantial lead. They succeeded in achieving this thanks largely to the deadly accuracy of free takers Martin Barry and Paul Beale. Just before the break Douglas were grateful to goal keeper Eoin Dolan who diverted a goal bound shot to safety. Meanwhile, youngsters Aaron Ward and Mark O’Connor were very impressive in the full forward line and Ward scored a succession of first half points to help Douglas secure a seven point’s interval lead. Within five minutes of the changeover Ian Lucey grabbed the games decisive score when he pounced to drive the sliotar to the Duhallow net. The north Cork side fought nobly to the final whistle but every time they pointed, Douglas responded affirmatively with Alan Cadogan in particular nonchalantly picking off points. A feature of Douglas’ win was the excellent performance of the full back line where David Sheehan, James O’Mahony and Shane O’Donoghue were impenetrable throughout. The championship will resume after the Leaving Cert exams. by Finbarr Buckley Umbro U-12 Premier Douglas Hall 0; Springfield Ramblers 1 Title contenders Ramblers were pushed all the way by a lively Hall outfit in which defenders Gavin McSweeney, Nathan Walsh, Sam McGrath, captain Patrick Walsh & keeper Matthew Collins were outstanding throughout. Shortly after the visitors scored, the Hall came close to an equalizer late in the first-half, when striking the crossbar from the edge of the area. Umbro U-15 Division Two Douglas Hall 1; Blarney Utd. 1 The Hall continued their promotion push in a cracking game of football on the main grass pitch. After dominating the opening twenty minutes, the Hall were fortunate to go in level at the break, before Craig Madden unleashed a glorious strike midways through the second-half to open the scoring. The visitors levelled in a rare foray forward with eight minutes remaining to keep their season very much alive. Umbro U-16 Division Two Wilton Utd. 3; Douglas Hall A 0 Tony Dold & Colm Drinan’s young team came unstuck away to United in the mid-week encounter. Fine performances by keeper Ian Clarke, Noel Fanning, Conor Bray, David Firzgerald & Aaron Dold kept the result in doubt right to the final whistle. FOOT-NOTE: Congratulations to coaches Liam Power, Pat Crowley & Ian Fitzgerald and their U-15 Division Five squad on winning the title following last week’s mid-week 1-1 draw away to Kanturk. Tickets for the club’s upcoming 40th anniversary dinner dance on Friday, May 13th next at RPH can still be purchased from Colm Lyons on (087) 2352551.
