The Word
by George Thompson - Editor
Proud Day for Irish Motorcycle Racing in World SuperBikes! When Eddie Irvine from Northern Ireland took the Formula One world by storm and won races, we were a nation of proud motorsport fans. Last weekend at Monza Eugene Laverty won both World Superbike Races claiming the top step of the podium, over which hung proudly, the Irish tri-colour – while Eugene is no stranger to the podium and the top step (he was runner up in last year’s World Supersport Championship) it was the Irishman’s first taste of victory in the ‘big’ class. The racing was brilliant while tactics made it a great spectacle and a proud day for Irish motorcycle racing. It was amazing to hear tv commentators describe Eugene as an ‘Irishman’, until he won – suddendly he was British but I didn’t notice a Union Jack hanging over that podium. Well done Eugene! World’s Longest Underwater Puck Push for Build4Life4Kids Cork’s Underwater Hockey Team is going to push a puck for a mile underwater this Saturday, 14th May 2011, at Mayfield Leisure Complex at 6pm in aid of Build4Life4Kids. The world’s longest puck push will help raise the €1.5m needed to build a dedicated clinic and isolated rooms for children with CF attending the Cork University Hospital. People are invited to come along and cheer on the team as they attempt this unique fundraiser or sponsor them by donating directly to Bank of Ireland, account name: Build4Life. Sort Code: 902645. Account Number: 80982998 or logging on to www.mycharity.ie/charity/build4life. Commenting on the fundraiser, Dave Ahern, Captain of the Cork Underwater Hockey Team said, ‘There will be two teams of eight swimming 65 lengths underwater pushing a puck along the bottom of the pool. Each length will take roughly 20 seconds. It will be very challenging but an apt event in aid of children suffering with cystic fibrosis whose battle with breathing is an ongoing challenge.’ Over the last 4 years Build4Life raised €2.3 million to develop dedicated facilities for adults with CF attending Cork University Hospital (CUH). This new Adult CF Day Clinic is due to open in the coming weeks and construction of the much anticipated 8 isolated beds for adult Cystic Fibrosis patients will begin in July. Build4Life would now like to do the same for kids with Build4Life4Kids The CUH is the second biggest CF Centre in Ireland caring for almost 25% of the CF population. Ireland has the highest rate of Cystic Fibrosis (CF) in the world and one of the lowest life expectancy, at just 21 years of age. One of the main reasons for our low life expectancy rate is the lack of dedicated Cystic Fibrosis Units throughout the country. For further information on how you can help this worthy cause, please call 086 2317722 or email info@build4life. net. Information can be found on www.build4life.net or follow Build4Life4Kids/Cystic Fibrosis on Facebook. Congratulations! Well done Avondale on winning the FAI Intermediate Cup last weekend and to Douglas Hall Umbro U-14 Division Five team who clinched the championship, while Corinthian’s schoolgirls Under 14 team won the Under 14 Premier Division League when they defeated St. Marys 4-3 in their final league game. Comments on Faction Fighting Dear Editor, A recent programme on TG4, dealing with Faction Fighting in Ireland during the early decades of the 19th century, explained that it began and ended in Tipperary. It was mainly one parish against another. The leaders of the factions began fighting with blackthorn sticks. This would be followed by stone throwing. The women used to fill their aprons and skirts with stones as ammunition to throw at the opposing faction.. Some women would put a stone into a sock and strike an opponent on the head, resulting in severed injury. The programme covered a number of faction fights in a case by case history. However, TG4 gave no mention of the Ballinhassig massacre which took place during a Fair Day in the 1830s when Ballygarvan and Ballinhassig factions clashed. The leaders started fighting with blackthorn sticks near the goal field in Ballinhassig. The police decided to try and stop it by taking out Deranter Sullivan the leader of the Ballinhassig faction and imprisoning him in a house
nearby. The Ballygarvan and Ballinhassig factions joined forces to release him.. They pelted stones through the windows. The police feared for their lives and tried to escape up the hill towards the Bandon Road. The hail of stones was so bad that the police opened fire killing a number but the bulk of the mob advanced with fury. The police were carrying single shot pistols and were attempting to load as they retreated. After a number of ragged volleys, the mob was subdued. There were 19 killed and scores upon scores wounded. By far the most ferocious factions fighters were led by the Hogans of Cappawhite in Tipperary. Faction fighting as a form of recreation violence came to an end in the early 1840s. Con O'Mahony Grange

part of the funding of this work, I must raise two thousand euro and am asking for support by the following: A donation to www.mycharity.ie/ event/gerhalbertandtheglobalschoolroom Prizes/vouchers for a raffle at a Table Quiz to be held on Thursday 19th May at Nemo Hurling and Football Club. Sponsorship for my team in the Cork City Marathon. The Global Schoolroom is based on the belief that the surest way for children living in remote areas in Uganda and north east India to escape the poverty trap is through quality education. Many of the
teachers in these areas have no quality teacher training and this is where the Global Schoolroom plays a part. For the month of July each year, Irish teachers work with Indian and Ugandan teachers to share their educational experiences and ideas. Already teachers who have completed this training with Irish teachers have show visible improvements in their professional expertise. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. I would like to thank all my clients for their loyal support during my time at Artisan.

Ballycotton RNLI lifeboat fundraisers Fundraising for any charity in this economic climate is a difficult task. Fundraisers for Ballycotton RNLI lifeboat are also finding it difficult on another front. They are few in number and are having to curtail their resources to a limited amount of events annually. With this in mind they are holding an information evening at the Midleton Park Hotel on Thursday next, 12 May, from 7 to 9pm, in the hope that they can recruit people who would be willing to lend their help occasionally. Members of the Ballycotton RNLI lifeboat fundraising committee will be on hand to greet people and explain what they do and how they do it. They will also explain the tasks involved in organising any event and how many people are needed to successfully complete the task. They are asking for help from volunteers who may have an hour or two to spare and might be available to lend a hand with an event. Fundraising committee members for Ballycotton RNLI lifeboat are inviting anyone interested to the Midleton Park Hotel and look forward to explaining what they do to interested parties and hope by the end of the evening they will have obtained much needed help for this charitable cause.

Film directed by recovering drug addict to screen at Cannes A hardhitting film about drugs directed by a recovering drug addict from Cork has been selected for screening at the worldfamous Cannes Film Festival. "It’s a dream come true," Philip McCarthy said last week. A decade ago, Philip, 36, was smoking heroin, cannabis and taking cocaine. Now drug-free and using his art form to spread the anti-drugs message, he is hoping to travel to the Cote d’Azur town next month for the screening of his film, The Dark Room, at Cannes’ influential Short Film Corner selection. A festival spokesperson said this section provides an opportunity to discover an emerging generation of new talent and current trends in short films. "Participating in Cannes Short Films improves a director’s chances of having a film selected for other international festivals and having his or her talent recognised by potential partners and distributors," she said However, Philip, who is on disability, is struggling to fund his trip and appealed for help. If you would like help he can be contacted on to do 085-2486605 BLARNEY SET FOR AN POST RÁS Red FM to broadcast from stage finish 185 riders from home and abroad will soon line up for the 59th edition of the An Post Rás, and as the start date draws ever closer spectators are being urged to come down and join in the activities at the stage finish in Blarney. Hard to believe six years have passed since the untimely death of Michael John Donovan of Cobh. Michael was a good supporter and gave great encouragement to this column. He was a friend I never met but I will always treasure his memory. His poems live on. Samuel Taylor Coleridge the author of The Ancient Mariner once said that ‘Good prose are words in their best order but good poetry is the best of words in the best order’. Michael brought that quote to mind. His excellent poem is riveting in its intensity and yet gentle and loving in its picturesque portrayal. Phrases like “Window ledge of a moving world” are certainly words in their best order. Thank you Michael! MY NEWTOWN AUNTIE (FOR CARA) The years have tumbled by. Cara you were the youngest. You were my mother’s baby sister. You have survived so many. Still you smile like a young girl Whose fingertips are perfectly, Balanced with delight upon the Window ledge of a moving world. Every day is a monument of miracle. A coy glance at photographs, other things. My Newtown Auntie Cara. My mothers baby sister, within whose Cheeky smile I can dance and dive and Always find Rachel. Two young girls whose footsteps still Skip upon stilettoed heels, arms linked, Skirts swishing through Cobh’s cobbled Squares and streets. Singing for her Majesty, the Queen Here at Presentation Secondary school the inconceivable has happened! Our school choir, under its director, Anne Dunphy, has been invited to sing for her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth on the 19th May, in Dublin. In our wildest dreams we would never have anticipated this and are still ‘smarting’ at the very anticipation of such a prestigious occasion. In November, 2010, our choir won the All Island School Choir Competition which was hosted
in the Waterfront Hall, in Belfast and sponsored by Co-operation Ireland in association with RTE and is in its second year. Such a win was a huge honour for our school and a reward for hard work and commitment by both staff and students. We are deeply honoured to be invited to perform at a concert, being hosted by the Queen and organised by RTE. The winning choir of the previous year, from the Presbyterian school in Belfast, will perform with us at the concert. For the students concerned, this will be an exciting and memorable event in their lives and, I suspect, an experience which is unlikely to be surpassed! For the school community, it is a reward for achievement and excellence which is what we are about. Sr. Sheila Kelleher. Principal.

If a caller is genuine he or she will not mind leaving their details, on the back of each card is a list of points containing advice on what to do when a stranger calls to your front door. These include making sure the latch is in place, and not engaging suspicious characters in conversations, "I hope you all have the safety latch on your doors". These simple yet effective measures could make all the difference particularly to elderly people living alone. We hope this scheme will be rolled out in our own community before too long, for more information contact me on 4363867. Lactose intolerance Lactose intolerance, also called lactase deficiency, means you aren't able to fully digest the milk sugar (lactose) in dairy products. It's usually not dangerous, but symptoms of lactose intolerance can be uncomfortable. The problem behind lactose intolerance is a deficiency of lactase — an enzyme produced by the lining of your small intestine. Many people have low levels of lactase, but most don't experience signs and symptoms.
Symptoms The signs and symptoms of lactose intolerance usually begin 30 minutes to two hours after eating or drinking foods that contain lactose. Common signs and symptoms include: Diarrhea, Nausea, Abdominal cramps, Bloating and Gas.
Causes Lactose intolerance is caused by low levels of the enzyme lactase in your small intestine that lead to signs and symptoms. Normally, the cells that line your small intestine produce

an enzyme called lactase. The lactase enzyme attaches to lactose molecules in the food you eat and breaks them into two simple sugars — glucose and galactose — which can be absorbed into your bloodstream. Without enough of the lactase enzyme, most of the lactose in your food moves unprocessed into the colon, where the normal intestinal bacteria interact with it. This causes the hallmarks of lactose intolerance — gas, bloating and diarrhea.
your intestines that help maintain a healthy digestive system. Probiotics are also available as active or "live" cultures in some yogurts and as supplements in capsule form. These are sometimes used for gastrointestinal conditions such as diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome. They may also help your body digest lactose. Probiotics are generally considered safe and may be worth a try if other methods don't help. For more information, contact Garvan at Lynch’s Pharmacy on 4366923.
Treatments Treatments can't cure lactose intolerance. There's currently no way to boost your body's production of the lactase enzyme. People with lactose intolerance usually find relief from signs and symptoms by reducing the amount of dairy products they eat and using special products made for people with this condition.

Down Syndrome Centre’s fashionforward campaign, Buy My Dress, supported by Kellogg’s Special K
, returns to Cork in 2011 and will take place in the Clarion Hotel on Saturday, 28th May, from 10 – 6pm. Buy My Dress is a campaign which calls on women countrywide to dig out the many unwanted dresses hanging in wardrobes nationwide and donate them to the one-day, pop-up sale taking place in aid of Down Syndrome Centre. Now it’s third year, the fundraiser has raised over €90K to date and will expand this year to take place on 28th May in Cork City and seven other centres -Dublin, Gorey, Kilkenny, Tralee, Limerick, Galway and Mayo. With the help of teams of volunteers who will organise each county event, the charity hopes to sell in excess of 6,000 dresses and is calling on women in homes, workplaces and clubs nationwide to donate ‘a guna’ over coming weeks. Dresses can be donated at drop-off points which have been set up in selected Credit Union branches, pharmacies and Unislim classes countrywide. See www. buymydress.ie for more details. Sinead O’Brien, the Cork event organiser , said; “I am delighted to be organising Buy My Dress Cork. Women simply love fashion and the idea that good money spent on a past garment can be converted into funds for charity,
has great appeal. This year, Down Syndrome Centre hope to raise €100k from the eight Buy My Dress events and I am asking all the ladies of Cork to give a dress – it may be too big, too small, or an impulse purchase gone wrong – and to drop it off at one of the many points established throughout the city & county which are listed on buymydress. ie”. Donna Byrne, Kellogg’s Special K Brand Manager said; “Kellogg’s Special K is thrilled to be on board as title sponsor for Buy My Dress again this year. The event has been a tremendous success over the past few years and we hope that our support will help make it even bigger and better in 2011. Both Kellogg’s Special K and Buy My Dress are synonymous with the little red dress, as well as women, fashion and glamour. The money raised from Buy My Dress goes to a truly fantastic cause”. All dresses donated will be sold at the Cork event on 28th May and any that remain will be sold on buymydressonline.ie the charity's online shop which operates year round.

Out and About with Fergus O’Leary On Wednesday we went up to Mitchelstown to see my father-inlaw. It’s a journey I enjoy, especially now that I’m not driving. I don’t know how many times I’ve made the trip but it’s not until you’re a passenger that you get to see the countryside. So I managed to get my favourite seat on the coach (behind the driver two rows back, the best view of all) and relaxed. It was a fine day and we past lush green fields with sleek cattle and hillsides dotted with sheep all no doubt enjoying the feel of the sun on their backs. All along the route you are presented with view after splendid view until, best of all, the Galtees come into sight. Then, before you know it, you’re dropping down into Mitchelstown. Mitchelstown is a fine, mainly Victorian, bustling market town with an imposing market square, fronted by some good looking buildings including the hotel and the old Co-op. The high street is always busy with what you quickly gather are locals from the meetings and greetings. One of my sister-in-laws met us off the bus and we did a little bit of shopping while we caught up with family news before going out to my father-in-law’s place. He lives a few miles outside the town at the foot of the Galtee Mountains. It is a remarkably beautiful spot. The house is at the end of a fairly long driveway. To the right of the driveway my father-in-law has laid a lawn which runs the full length of the drive. Planted in the centre of this lawn is a row of maple trees, half of which are Japanese maple with dark coppery foliage and the other half with variegated white and pale green leaves.
18 - Thur 12 May '11
Planted alternately they provide a stunning contrast to each other. It’s always good to be out there but on this day it was extra special. The sun was out and the view over the Galtees was immense. In the pasture behind the house were some cattle with their calves and my father-in-law was helping his grandson with a new born calf. The swallows were swooping in and out of the outbuildings. The only sounds to be heard were the cattle and the birds. And what I got was an overall sensation of peace, of continuity, of stability. All in all, a day to lift the heart. PASSAGE WEST LIBRARY Opening hours- Tues, Thurs, Fri 2pm to 6pm Saturday 10.30am to 1pm a photocopier is now available for public use in the library during opening hours The knitting and craft group meet every Thursday from 2.30 onwards all welcome Why not join? For Dublin band Bipolar Empire, the release of their debut album 'Feel That You Own It' can't come quick enough. Not that they are in any rush - patience has always been a part of their make-up, despite the
date of birth on their passports. It's that patience, combined with a never say die work ethic that has seen them grow and develop into a stunning live act - and it all began in a field in Co Kildare. Amidst the euphoric haze of Oxegen 2007, in a mud-laden field in Punchestown, three young Dublin musicians decided to band together and try their hands at forming a popular musical group that might one day aspire to greatness. All hailing from the Dublin suburb of Tallaght, supersonic warbler Shane O'Reilly was joined by horizontally laid back bassist Joe Leech and drumming dynamo Callum Mc Adam. And so it was to pass, Bipolar Empire was born. Their stylistic folk infused rock'n'roll, delivered with genuine raw passion and boundless energy, began to draw the attention of young music connoisseurs and as the live shows developed into a tighter, more intense experience,

Scrappage Deadline Clarification Scrappage is ending The SIMI is today warning motorists who are considering buying a car under the Scrappage Scheme to order as soon as possible as the scheme ends in just 9 weeks time. SIMI Press Officer, Suzanne Sheridan, says “While the scheme officially ends on the 30th June, a dealer may require a number of weeks to order and take delivery of your car. So if customers don’t want to be disappointed, they need to shop now”. The SIMI’s used car website www.beepbeep.ie now shows a ‘Scrappage Countdown’, a reminder to motorists of the number of days they have left to avail of the scheme. Sheridan continues, “So far this year sales of new cars are up on last year, driven by the Government Scrappage Scheme and the great discounts available". Please note - any car that turns 10 years old after June 30th 2011 does not qualify for scrappage.
HGV registrations begin to stabilise at last! Official Motor Industry figures just released from the SIMI show that 8,709 new cars were sold in April, an increase of 3% on last year. SIMI Director General, Alan Nolan says “Whereas this may seem a fairly modest increase, given that we had three long-weekends in a single month, this is a very creditable result.” So far this year, 56,676 new cars have been sold, compared to 50,591 for the same period last year, an increase of 12%. The figures show that 1,125 Light Commercial Vehicles were registered in April, an increase of 39% over last year while 125 HGVs were registered an increase of 62% over April of 2010. The year to date figure for LGVs was 6,093 which was an increase (5%) over the first four months of last year (5,817) while the year to date statistics for HGVs (475) are also up 4% compared to 2010 (456). According to Alan Nolan “These Commercial Vehicle figures are a first tentative sign of stability beginning to return. This is the first month since 2008 that the HGVs have shown an increase and together with the increase in LGV registrations this has to be welcomed”. Alan Nolan continued “These are not big numbers so statistics like this have to be viewed in context. That said Commercial Vehicles are very often seen as a true barometer of economic activity and although we will need to watch future developments very carefully before drawing firm conclusions, this result has to be seen as a very welcome indicator.”

VW to release plug-in hybrids soon Volkswagen has confirmed that it will launch a range of 'important models' with plug-in hybrid technology from 2013. In his announcement, VW Group chairman, Dr. Martin Winterkorn said: “Over the mid-term, the plug-in hybrid offers great potential, because it combines the best of two worlds in one vehicle. “The plug-in hybrid offers precisely what many customers expect: unlimited internal combustion engine performance combined with attractive electric mobility ranges in everyday driving.” He would not confirm which models in the range would get this technology, but the next-generation Golf is a certain bet, given that a few years ago VW showed a Golf-based plug-in hybrid concept car based on the Golf. This 'TwinDrive' concept, of which many units have been used in fleet tests, mates an electric motor with a range of 50km to either a TSI turbopetrol or TDI turbodiesel engine. More recently, Audi also showed off a plug-in hybrid concept called the A5 e-tron quattro - with a rear-mounted electric motor allowing all-wheel drive capability. It's almost certain that Audi will also jump on the plug-in bandwagon with this quattro variation finding its way into various key models.

TRAMORE ATHLETIC AFC Umbro U14 Division 3 Tramore Athletic 5 St Mary’s 2 The Tramore Athletic U14s showed off their Umbro U14 Division 3 league champion’s trophy in typically impressive fashion when they finished their extraordinary league campaign with a five goals to two victory over St Mary’s at Tramore Park last Wednesday evening. Tramore’s display on the night typified all the skill, talent and character that manifested itself in their exceptional league performance. Ryan McCarthy grabbed two first goals to set Tramore on their way to crowning their league win with a final day victory. There were further second half strikes from Pierce O’Keeffe and two further goals from Ryan McCarthy, each
Yet again the Pan Celtic festival in Dingle proved to be another great event for Douglas Camogie Club to compete in. With glorious weather and enthusiastic supporters we entered into the final against Ardrahan. What followed was 60 minutes of excellent skill and excitement. Unfortunately, we seemed to have no luck in finding the back of the net and did not emerge victorious. That however could not detract from the commttment and dedication shown by every single player on the pitch. On behalf of the coaches and trainers can we say a huge thanks to Captain Aisling MacDonald for leading her team so valiantly and to the girls themselves for making it a great weekend. A big thank you to all the supporters and parents who travelled to Dingle to make Pan Celtic yet another memorable event. Senior Douglas Senior team captured the first silverware of 2011 by winning the Ballincollig Credit Union “Under-lights” tournament and also picked up two league points when defeating Ballincollig on Easter Sunday. The first half was evenly contested but two goals by Rachel O’Sullivan being the difference on a scoreline of 2-5 to 0-5 to Douglas. Our defence was superb with Louise O’Regan, Emma Jordan, Ciara Lynch and Alison Peate to the fore. In the second half we came under a lot of pressure but Therese Maher with some high catches and Jess Kavanagh with a number of great saves the highlights. Pamala Mackey made some good solo runs ably assisted by Tracey McCarthy and Emma Kavanagh won a lot of ball on the wing. Shannon Dempsey shows some nice touches while Sinead Duggan was very strong on the ball. Clara Kavanagh in the corner set up a few scores while Katrina Mackey scored some nice points and took her goal very well in the last few minutes. Amanda O’Regan covered a lot of ground during the hour.
one better than the last to wrap up victory for Tramore. Congratulations once again from all Tramore Athletic members to managers Paul O’Mahony and Jason McSweeney and especially to our U14 team for their fantastic league win. Umbro U13 Division 2 Bandon 0 Tramore Athletic 8 The Tramore Athletic U13s continued their seemingly inexorable march towards promotion when they defeated Bandon on Bank Holiday Monday. The match itself was a hugely entertaining affair with both sides playing attractive brands of passing, attacking football. The difference between the sides at the final whistle as has been the case so often this season with this Tramore side was their decisiveness in front of goal. Both teams created chances but Tramore’s economical approach with their chances was difference between the two teams. Pierce O’Keeffe grabbed a brace for Tramore and Aaron
Browne, Edozie Ogbene, Jacob Morris, Eoin Desmond, Liam Dineen and Cian McCarthy scored a goal apiece to complete the scoring for Tramore. Bandon’s attitude on the day deserves special mention as despite setbacks they continually sought to attack and create chances at every opportunity. Umbro U12 Division 2 Kilreen Celtic 1 Tramore Athletic 5 The Tramore Athletic U12s’ promotion from Umbro U12 Division 2 is almost confirmed following their exciting five goals to one victory away to Kilreen Celtic on Sunday morning. Andrew Turner grabbed two goals for the visitors with Alan O’Reilly, David Hurley and Sean O’Brien completing the scoring for Tramore. The game was illuminated by outstanding midfield performances for Tramore by Colm Kiely and Cian Fitton who dominated possession for Tramore on the back of another rock solid display from Tramore’s defensive unit. G.A.A. FOCUS Snippets from the Local and National Scene By Pat Harrington It was a strange decision indeed by congress to reintroduce replays for all provincial games and all-Ireland quarter finals. The purpose of this of course is to generate extra revenue. I would go so far as to deem it pure greed. It is a decision that may have a huge impact on club championships. There were soundbites emanating from Croke Park last year relating to the importance of the role of the club within the organisation. It was congress who passed the motion but in fairness Christy Cooney said “The G.A.A. doesn’t need any more intercounty games than we already have”. Someone else put forward a motion stating that there should be a back door system operating in the under 21 championship. Mercifully this was defeated. Conor Counihan was critical of the number of games his players had to contend with; particularly Ciarán Sheehan who is carrying an injury. There are too many competitions open to young players, especially at under 21. Perhaps Conor should not have played Ciarán whilst he was involved with the Cork under 21s in the last few weeks. After all it was only the league. Most managers at intercounty level think they own the players and are becoming more demanding. This applies at all levels. It is a matter of huge concern to the clubs when they do not have access to their players. Kildare footballer Johnny Doyle played with his club Allenwood twice last year, out of sixteen league games. There are those who say league doesn’t matter but for the club manager it is very important for the development of the team along with team building. Sadly the club has in recent times been reduced to a status akin to second class citizenship. My views will certainly not change the landscape. The whole situation is geared towards the intercounty scene and I just can’t see any comeback. Féile Semi Final Recently I viewed my first underage game of the year. It was Féile hurling, Blackrock vs. Fr. O’Neills. I expected Fr. O’Neills to struggle as they don’t have the numbers at that age. Well they truly rattled the Rockies. Both full forwards are very promising players. Sadly for the Ballymacoda and Ladysbridge based club their full forward got injured near the end – he was O’Neill’s scorer-in-chief. Well done to both teams. The game between Sarsfields and Russell Rovers was a complete mismatch. It will do nothing for the promotion of the game in the East Cork club. Surely Russell Rovers would be better off in a lower section. I hope nobody accuses me of being negative. The final score was 2 – 29 to 0 – 2. in favour of Sars. Dublin vs. Kilkenny The year of commencement of the second 24 - Thur 12 May '11
world war was the last occasion that Dublin won a national hurling title at senior level. The Dubs simply scored for fun in the opening half with the assistance of a strong wind with quality ball delivered into the corners. The second half disappointed; very stop-start. The dismissal of the Kilkenny player in the first half definitely had an obvious impact. The Dubs finished with a flourish and won by 12 points. It was some sight to see and the hill in full voice for a hurling match. For Dublin and for hurling it was a major victory, but don’t write off Kilkenny; they have five or six players to come into the team. The seeds for the success of Dublin hurling were sown in the mid nineties. In 1994 the combined colleges hurling team was formed. In 2001 they won the Leinster College’s title and the all-Ireland in 2006. Leinster minor titles at intercounty level were won in 2005 and 2007 and Leinster under 21 titles were won in 2007 and 2010. In 2004 the Dublin county board launched a strategic development for juvenile hurling and football, costing €7 million over three years. As one can see the board put a well prepared plan in place. Now they are beginning to reap the fruits of their investment – with more to be achieved. Clare Clare man Tommy Maher said Clare’s defending against Limerick was very poor. I spotted Tommy on Saturday night talking to Marc O’Shea (Kerry). I wonder if that had anything to do with defending. Cork play Clare in the Munster football championship.
Douglas Hall Underage by Finbarr Buckley Umbro U-12 Division Six Douglas Hall A 2; Lakewood Ath. 0 Second-half goals by Padraig Hickey & James Barrett stretched the Hall’s unbeaten run to five games. Despite being on top for most of the opening half, the home team had to wait until midways through the second-half to seal the points. Umbro U-14 Division Five Kanturk 1; Douglas Hall A 1 The Hall clinched the title courtesy of a oneone draw in their final match of the season. Despite going behind inside the opening minute, Ben Fitzgerald volleyed in Fintan Cadogan’s cross ten minutes later to maintain his side’s unbeaten record throughout the season. Daniel O’Sullivan, Mark Power, Liam O’Neill, Paul A. Burke & Paul F. Burke turned in fine performances for the winners. After the match, Peter Connolly of the CSL presented the trophy to Conor Crowley amid scenes of wild jubilation. Umbro U-16 Premier Douglas Hall 1; Ringmahon Rangers 2 Andy Lehane & Nick Swanton’s battling team pushed leaders Ringmahon all the way , before going down by the odd goal in three. Rob Lehane cancelled out the visitors opening penalty before conceding a scrambled second late on, despite keeping their opponents pinned into their own half for long periods of the second-half. Ryan Carroll excelled in the centre of the park for the home team. FOOT-NOTE : Tickets are still available for the club’s 40th anniversary dinner dance at RPH tomorrow night ( Friday ) from Colm Lyons on (087) 2352551, priced at €40.
