The Word
by George Thompson - Editor
Early Morning Fitness Training While I’ve been back playing basketball over the past year as a means of keeping fit, I recently decided to get back to my routine of getting up early in the morning and getting out for a cycle. Starting last Monday, I am enjoying getting out at 6am on the bike, down the old railway line from Blackrock and swinging off left before Rochestown towards Blackrock Castle and then home to finish. I’m amazed at the amount of people out at that hour of the morning – walking, jogging and cycling, I thought I’d be pretty much on my lonesome, but far from it. The one thing that I find strange is that I’ve always bid people I pass in these circumstances, a good morning’ but I have found this week that a lot of people won’t respond, tend not to make eye contact or seem surprised to be greeted with a ‘good morning’. Society has certainly changed! DOUGLAS LIONS CLUB ANNUAL 5 MILE CHARITY WALK Douglas and district Lions Club will hold their 8th annual 5 mile walk on Sunday the 29th of May. This year all proceeds of the charity walk will go directly to benefit needy causes in the Douglas area, to continue their ongoing support of the support of the Douglas Lions Club to the community. To achieve this we need your support. Walkers should register in Harty’s Quay car park at 2.30pm. The walk will start at Harty’s Quay and travel to Blackrock via the amenity walk and return to Harty’s Quay where refreshments will be served. Sponsorship cards are available from Liam Maloney at Lion House, Douglas. Mobile number: 087 7851082.

Congratulations Well done to Douglas Hall AFC who celebrated their 40th anniversary with a dinner dance at Rochestown Park Hotel last Friday night. I was meant to attend but due to unforeseen last minute circumstances I was unable to be there. My loss as by all accounts it was certainly a night to remember.

OH ISADORA Dear Editor Recently heard Red Hurley singing Oh Isadora and it reminded me of her tragic story. Way back in 1927 Isadora Duncan U.S. Dancer's troubled life came to a dramatic end tonight when she was strangled by her own shawl. As she set out for an evening drive in Nice in a red Bugatti sports car, the fringe of the shawl was, unknown to her, dangling in the spokes of the rear wheel beside her. "Adieu
mes Amis" she called to friends watching her go. The first turn of the wheels broke her neck. At 49, it was the end of a tragic life. the young poet she married in Russia hanged himself two years ago. Americans rejected her as a revolutionary on her last tour. Defiantly, she bared her breast on stage! P.S. Did the song "Hey Isadora, you're living again, having the time of your life" really remember Ms. Duncan? Neil O'Donoghue Greenhills

by Finbarr Buckley A chance meeting at the funeral of former colleague, Brid Murphy, led to bridging a forty year gap for a group of former Roches Stores employees, who met for an impromptu re-union at the Market Tavern back in late February. The well known former Patrick Street department store, which had served the people of Cork for almost a hundred years, closed its doors in October 2006 before transferring over the business to the English high-street chain, Debenhams. Over thirty staff enjoyed an evening of chat and the chance to remember old times when the customer really was the life-line of any retail business. The occasion offered the opportunity to catch up with the lives of work colleagues who may not have met in almost forty years. The success of the event prompted calls for a repeat gathering which will be held at the same venue on Friday, May 27th next. All Welcome! Contact Finbarr Buckley on (086) 0712638 or e-mail cblbuckley@ eircom.net, for further details.

This time of year always brings to mind the passage of time. The early summer is blooming but like time itself we too must move on. Somehow it’s hard not to look back, not just to reflect on this time of year but on life in general. There are some memories that always get to me. The Lane Come on down ‘The Lane’, sure we don’t need a reason, The weather’s just fine, and it’s our time of season, The green leaves are calling, come on out the door, Oh! It’s hard to believe, we’re not young anymore. Ah! Remember that summer of long, long ago, When you were eighteen, and I couldn’t let go And you were my new love, my life and my dream, How far away now all those golden days seem. And why did you love me? Oh! I’ll never know, But we made it together and made our love grow, Our home and our family, we treasure with pride, Thank God for your love and for you by my side. Come on me again, sweet flower of the summer, Our summers are few, but we still have each another, All the good days are gone, ah! We’ve heard that before, For the sake of old times, come on, kiss me once more. And we’ll walk down ‘The Lane’ as we did in life’s spring, Here, give me your hand, and together we’ll swing,

Buy My Dress Cork is back in 2011! Down Syndrome Centre’s fashionforward campaign, Buy My Dress, supported by Kellogg’s Special K , returns to Cork in 2011 and will take place in the Clarion Hotel on Saturday, 28th May, from 10 – 6pm. Buy My Dress is a campaign which calls on women countrywide to dig out the many unwanted dresses hanging in wardrobes nationwide and donate them to the one-day, pop-up sale taking place in aid of Down Syndrome Centre. Now it’s third year, the fundraiser has raised over €90K to date and will expand this year to take place on 28th May in Cork City and seven other centres -Dublin, Gorey, Kilkenny, Tralee, Limerick, Galway and Mayo. With the help of teams of volunteers who will organise each county event, the charity hopes to sell in excess of 6,000 dresses and is calling on women in homes, workplaces and clubs nationwide to donate ‘a guna’ over coming weeks. Dresses can be donated at drop-off points which have been set up in selected Credit Union branches, pharmacies and Unislim classes countrywide. See www. buymydress.ie for more details. Sinead O’Brien, the Cork event
organiser , said; “I am delighted to be organising Buy My Dress Cork. Women simply love fashion and the idea that good money spent on a past garment can be converted into funds for charity, has great appeal. This year, Down Syndrome Centre hope to raise €100k from the eight Buy My Dress events and I am asking all the ladies of Cork to give a dress – it may be too big, too small, or an impulse purchase gone wrong – and to drop it off at one of the many points established throughout the city & county which are listed on buymydress. ie”. Donna Byrne, Kellogg’s Special K Brand Manager said; “Kellogg’s Special K is thrilled to be on board as title sponsor for Buy My Dress again this year. The event has been a tremendous success over the past few years and we hope that our support will help make it even bigger and better in 2011. Both Kellogg’s Special K and Buy My Dress are synonymous with the little red dress, as well as women, fashion and glamour. The money raised from Buy My Dress goes to a truly fantastic cause”. All dresses donated will be sold at the Cork event on 28th May and any that remain will be sold on buymydressonline.ie the charity's

Young @ Heart by Phil Goodman
Depression in the elderly is the single most common disorder in those over 65, affecting up to twenty percent of those over 65, according to a recent study between five and eight percent of the population have depression at any one time. In Ireland this means that as many as 300,000 people are living with depression right now. Everyone feels sad sometimes but if sadness lasts too long it may be depression , common signs of depression are loss of interest in activities, a sense of tiredness and fatigue, anxiety, loss of sleep, feeling like crying, loss of appetite and avoiding contact with other people etc. Young at Heart has established Care-Ring Douglas which is a social friendly call once a week and enables us to reach out to people who may need our support, or just

a chat. Causes that contribute to depression in the elderly are living alone, decreased mobility due to illness or no longer able to drive, loss of a loved one etc. If you know of someone who would enjoy our many activities and outings contact me on 4363867. It is so important to get involved in some activity where you meet new friends, enjoy new companionship and stories of your life's experiences, it is good to talk. Well done to the teachers in our local schools who prepare the First Holy Communion classes to receive the sacrament, it is wonderful to see happy faces and innocence, they are a credit to all involved on reaching their special day. The trip to Glenstall on 24th May is fully booked and also the Ring of Kerry trip. Plenty of more trips to enjoy. Tickets available for the final of over 60s on the 29th May in City Hall at fifteen euros each.

Melvin Nolan has rebuilt his Honda which he still holds the Irish Record for the Flying Kilometre in 1981 on the Carrigrohane Straight, Average speed was 184.1mph. This motorcycle only did 120mph out of the factory but Melvin fitted a Turbo to it and Nitious, he said he would have gone faster but the clutch slipped every time he boosted the power with nitrious. He did go to Elvinghton in the UK and recorded a speed of 207mph, incredible 30 years ago. Soda Blasting & Sand Blasting Cork
Soda Blasting and sandblasting is a newer alternative to older more aggressive forms of cleaning of boat hulls, fire damaged building and another delicate surfaces. Soda blasting can be applied to numerous surfaces. These include glass, aluminum, stainless steel, wood, brick, steel, concrete and natural stone (sandstone, lime, marble) to name a few. Soda blasting causes very minimal or no damage to the surface. In certain cases we are able to do selective paint layer removal taking only top coats off while leaving the undercoat in tact. We are even able to remove paint from an aluminum soft drink can without damage to the can. Unlike sandblasting, garnet blasting or bead blasting, Soda blasting creates very minimal or NO heat which ensures the shape and strength of the surface being blasted. At the end of this month we will see the arrival of a new Powder Coating machine further adding to our services.

Cork City Triumph – Going their own way!

Richard Rice and Tom Fitzgerald saw an opening for Triumph in Cork in 2009, they opened at the start of the recession and have been growing ever since. Cork City Triumph have helped drive Triumph to No.2 in the over 600cc class in Ireland. The Triumph range lends itself to the current profile of an Irish motorcyclist, this person is looking for a Quality Product with high aftersale value, good service and aftersales. He or she also, in most cases, wants to feel involved at the local dealership when they visit. If you would like to
Go your own way
be involved in this lifestyle experience, Richard and Tom from their previous experience recognised this and have a newsletter, rideouts, test drives and a great coffee machine. Cork City Triumph are one of the few shops offering finance, the lads are very happy with the package while terms and conditions do apply. On offer also is a full range of Triumph clothing and accessories and also other complementary products such as Nitro Helmets, Akito Clothing and Schubert Helmets. Cork City Triumph has Pius O’Sullivan in the

The West Cork Motorcycle Club Munster 100 Motorcycle Road Races 20th & 21st August 2011 by George Thompson Racing history in Cork can be traced back to the 1920’s, when the Cork and District Light Car and Motorcycle Club was formed to cater for motor sport in Cork. The Munster "100" has had a long and chequered history since the first motorcycle race held in Cork in 1940. That first race 70 years ago was called the “Cork 50” and took place on the 1.5 mile Monaghan road circuit near Cork city centre. Due to the onset of World War II and petrol shortages, motorcycle racing did not return to Munster until 1947 when the Munster Motorcycle and Car Club ran the MCUI’s 25 mile championship. This was on a 3.5 mile segment of the pre-war Cork Grand Prix car circuit at Carrigrohane. The same Carrigrohane road (better known as the “Straight Road”) that saw local Cork man Mel Nolan take the Irish ¼ mile land speed record with a time of 8.55 seconds at 172 MH, a thirty year record that still stands today. In 1976, the race was revived as a short circuit event at Mondello Park, and none other than Joey Dunlop won the main race of the day “The Munster 100” and again the following year in Ardcloyne, Kinsale where it remained until 1985 before moving to Clonakilty in 1989 to1992. Eighteen years later in 2010 it was revived by the West Cork Motorcycle Club (WCMCC) in the town of Dunmanway where the circuit ran through the town drawing enormous enthusiasm from locals and spectators alike. Due to the immense logistics of running through a town, an alternative circuit was proposed for 2011and the MCI recently granted the club clearance to run the event. 2011 The town of Timoleague hosts an annual festival with this year’s being
The Vincent Rapide The Vincent Rapide was a motorcycle designed and built at the Vincent works in Great North Road, Stevenage, Hertfordshire UK during the war and released to the press before end of hostilities. The prototype was the Series A 47.5° V-twin launched in 1936. With 6.8:1 compression, it produced 45 bhp (34 kW). It is often purported that Phil Irving was trying to find a replacement for the 500 cc Vincent Comet engine. There were two blueprints on his desk, and one had fallen on top of the other, to demonstrate a "V" formation. There is no evidence to prove this, however. Its frame incorporated the first cantileverrear suspension, used on all subsequent Vincents. Other innovations included a foot gearchange instead of a handoperated gearlever, a four-speed gearbox instead of two or three and a side stand. The high power meant that the gearbox and clutch did not cope well and it was developed into the ‘Series B’ which had internal oil pipes and the

held from the 13th to the 22nd August, with fashion shows, live bands and entertainment for all. To top it off, the West Cork Motorcycle club are set to launch their second Munster 100 Road Race at a circuit just outside the town. This circuit will provide spectators with premium viewing of most of the track and an opportunity to watch the riders as they navigate their way along the three mile circuit. The Club, currently in the early stages formalising all aspects of the event, hope to see many of the familiar faces from last year such as Ryan Farquhar, The Dunlop brothers Michael and William and local entrants, Ciaran O’Callaghan (Winner of the Senior Support at the recent Cookstown 100) and Declan Swanton. Certainly one to watch out for on the 20th & 21st of August. For more details see: www.westcorkmotorcycleclub.ie
gearbox integrated with the engine casting (Unit Construction). The angle between the cylinders was increased to 50° instead of the 47.5° of the Series A engine, which allowed the use of the engine as part of the frame. The Rapide had ‘’Girdraulic’’ front forks and triangulated rear springing to prevent front end twist under hard braking and the cantilever rear became the most widely used form of rear suspension for motorcycles after 1980. Brakes were dual 7-inch (180 mm) single-leading shoe (SLS), front and rear. A more modern hydraulic shock absorber and spring assembly later replaced the old twin springs and friction damper. The rear seat was supported by a sub-frame down to the rear frame pivot point, providing a semi-sprung seat with 6 inches (150 mm) of suspension.
brake & gear shift were adjustable for reach to suit individual feet and the rear mud guard was hinged to facilitate the removal of the rear wheel. The Series C, which Vincent produced from 19491950, featured a 998cc, 50-degree V-twin that put out between 45 and 55 horsepower, depending on the state of tune (Rapide or Black Shadow). Period tests demonstrated that the bike was easily capable of speeds in excess of 100 mph. The letters HRD were discontinued in 1950. Vincent were trying to enter the American market, and did not want any confusion with Harley-Davidson (HD). Falling sales of expensive motorcycles caused closure in 1956. Vincent refused to compromise on quality, which, unfortunately, kept the price up. It has often been said that the firm was guilty of "over engineering". One comment made about this was that "Vincent is a solution in search of a problem."
The Series B had a Feridax Dunlopillo Dualseat, and a tool tray under the front. The Series "B" also had an inline felt oil filter instead of the metal gauze of the Series "A". Vincent used quickly detachable wheels, making wheel and tyre changes easier. The rear wheel was reversible, and different size rear sprockets could be fitted for quick final-drive ratio changes. The

Sunburn You know sunburn when it happens: red, painful skin that feels hot to the touch. Sunburn usually appears within a few hours after sun exposure and may take from several days to several weeks to fade. Intense sun exposure that results in sunburn increases your risk of certain complications and related skin diseases. These include dry, wrinkled skin; liver spots; actinic keratoses; and skin cancer, including melanoma.
Symptoms Signs and symptoms of sunburn include: Pinkness or redness Skin that feels warm or hot to the touch Pain or tenderness Swelling Small fluid-filled blisters, which may break Headache, fever and fatigue if sunburn covers a large area
Causes Sunburns are caused by exposure to too much ultraviolet (UV) light. UV radiation is a wavelength of sunlight in a range too short
How do I handle mum’s Alzheimer’s?
Diabetes, what do I do now?
for the human eye to see. UV light is divided into three wavelength bands — ultraviolet A (UVA), ultraviolet B (UVB) and ultraviolet C (UVC). Only UVA and UVB rays reach the earth.
Treatments and drugs Sunburn treatment doesn't heal your skin or prevent damage to your skin, but it can reduce pain, swelling and discomfort. You may find home remedies helpful. These include taking a nonprescription anti-inflammatory medication, applying a cool compress and applying an aloe vera lotion. Sunburn typically resolves on its own within several days, depending on the severity of the burn.
Lifestyle remedies Once sunburn occurs, you can't do much to limit damage to your skin. However, the following tips may reduce your pain and discomfort in the hours and days following sunburn: Take anti-inflammatory medication, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, on a regular basis according to the label instructions until redness and soreness subside. Use caution when giving aspirin to children or teenagers.
Apply cold compresses — such as a towel dampened with cool tap water — to the affected skin. Or take a cool bath or shower. Apply a moisturizing cream, aloe vera lotion or hydrocortisone cream to affected skin. A lowdose (0.5 percent to 1 percent) hydrocortisone cream may decrease pain and swelling, and speed up healing. If blisters form, don't break them. They contain your natural body fluid (serum) and are a protective layer. Also, breaking blisters slows the healing process and increases the risk of infection. If needed, lightly cover blisters with gauze. If blisters break on their own, apply an antibacterial cream. Drink plenty of fluids. Sun exposure and heat can cause fluid loss through your skin. Be sure to replenish those fluids to prevent dehydration — when your body doesn't have enough water and other fluids to carry out its normal functions. Treat peeling skin gently. Within a few days, the affected area may begin to peel. This is simply your body's way of getting rid of the top layer of damaged skin. While your skin is peeling, continue to use moisturizing cream. Finish sowing hardy annual flowers outside. Later sowings will result in later blooms. Sprinkle general purpose fertiliser around clumps of spring-flowering bulbs. Ensure permanent shrubs and hedging are given a generous feed using this or rose fertiliser. Hoe it into the soil's surface and water in before covering with a mulch of garden compost. Place support frames over tall perennials, or those with a floppy habit. Remember to put eye guards on top of any canes used. Prune back the flowering stems of hellebores, such as Helleborus argutifolius, as soon as blooms are past their best. Cut back to their base to make room for new shoots. If seedlings are required, leave a stem to set seed, then collect and sow it when ripe. Lightly trim off dead flowers of moss phlox, saxifrage, aubrieta and other alpines once they have faded. Excessive growth should also be trimmed to keep plants tidy. Rooted portions can be potted up separately.
Crops to sow outside or under cloches during early May include dwarf French beans, beetroot, sprouting broccoli, Brussels sprouts, summer and savoy cabbage, cauliflower, ridge cucumbers, endive, kale, kohl rabi, lettuce, marrows, peas, radish, spinach, swede, sweet corn and turnips. Delay sowings if soil conditions are cold and wet. For an early crop of beans, sow French and runner beans in pots in the greenhouse or on a windowsill. Choose deep pots, if possible, sowing two seeds per pot, and thinning to leave the strongest seedling which is then planted outside in late May or June. Alternatively, sow directly outside under cloches in May or June for a slightly later crop
Greenhouse Continue sowing seeds of summer bedding plants. Thin out those in trays, or prick them out individually into pots.
Hanging Baskets Plant up baskets with fuchsias and tender perennials, then hang them

in the greenhouse to develop.
Water Garden Plant up new aquatic baskets with water lilies and other pond plants. If you have large, overcrowded plants, now is a good time to divide them.
In General Water newly planted fruit trees, roses and shrubs regularly to help their root systems establish. Hoe borders once a week to prevent weed seedlings establishing. Buy young plants for pots and con-
tainers as well for bedding displays. Most need to be potted up into 7.5cm (3in) pots and grown on in warm, bright conditions ready for planting out at the end of May. Be sure to acclimatise plants to cooler outdoor conditions before planting out. Don't be lulled into a false sense of security by warmer days. While the weather continues to be unpredictable, it pays to take precautions.

Fleetwood Mac frontwoman Stevie Nicks has revealed plans for a reunion in 2012. Perez Hilton admitted that after her new solo album, 'In Your Dreams', and that of bandmate Lindsey Buckingham, 'Seeds We Sow', the band will reunite for a tour and may even record their first album since 2003's 'Say You Will'. The 62 year old singer said, "When my album and Lindsey's albums come to a stop, then Fleetwood Mac will gather again and we'll either make another record or we won't and we'll just go on tour." Nicks work with the Eurythmics Dave Stewart on the new record, which was released at the beginning of May. JLS star Ortise Williams has admitted that the boyband have been "in talks" with Rihanna to discuss the possibility of a collaboration. Williams said that himself and the rest of The X Factor group are hoping to work with Rihanna, revealing that when he met the Barbadian star, he tried to ask her out. "We are in talks to collaborate with Rihanna. Let's see what happens there. We hope so. I tried to chat her up." "It was going well and then there were a few other guys on the prowl and I said, 'You know what, I'll step out because there's others.' I can't say who." As well as Rihanna, Williams confessed that JLS are also keen to work with the likes of Adele, Nicole Scherzinger and Jessie J. He revealed: "We haven't actually collaborated with a solo female artist apart from Kylie Minogue. Nicole Scherzinger would be amazing. We should give it a try." The Beat Again hitmaker added: "I'm a huge fan of Adele, I'd absolutely love to collaborate with Adele. That would be absolutely amazing. Also Jessie J. That would be very, very incredible."

Speaking of Adele, the star claims she turned to music after fearing she'd failed her GCSEs, Adele may be queen of the charts, but the record-breaking singer has revealed that she never planned a career in music. The 23-year old, who is still sitting pretty at the top of the Official UK Album Chart after fifteen weeks, has revealed that she only decided to be a singer after realising that she was going to fail her GCSEs. In an interview, the Someone Like You hitmaker confessed: "I never had the aim of being a professional recording artist." The "The only reason I ended up studying music at the BRIT School was because I knew I was going to fail my GCSEs, so I panicked." Adele continued: "I knew I'd pass all the music and performance stuff, and because of that I thought I’d get work somewhere in the music The ideal venue for that special Valentines industry."

People of Cork Urged to Swim 1K to Support “1 Day for Rehab” Cork’s Rachel Sarah Murphy takes part in a swimathon to launch 1 Day For Rehab :Rehab is calling on the people of Cork to sign up and do a 1K Swim as part of its 1 Day for Rehab fundraising appeal on Friday 17th June in aid of local services for people with disabilities. Rehab 1K Swims, which are supported by Coral Leisure, will be taking place in communities all over Ireland. Over 70 leisure centres and pools nationwide have agreed to waive their fees for those who wish to undertake a sponsored swim, so there really is every incentive to take part. Details of the participating leisure centres and pools, as well as other fundraising activities taking place in Cork as part of the appeal, can be found by logging onto www.1dayforrehab.ie The countdown to the appeal was kicked off at a marathon 24-hour competitive swim at the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin, which was supported by Fair City star and Cork native Rachel Sarah Murphy , Dragon Seán Gallagher, and RTÉ presenter Nuala Carey. This year Rehab has introduced a 1 Day pin which will be on sale, while Eurospar – which has nominated Rehab as its Charity of the Year – will be selling 1 Day for Rehab Irish-made chocolate lollipops through its network of 56 supermarkets countrywide. Every year, Rehab supports some 8,000 people with disabilities and others who are marginalised in Ireland to realise their dreams, learn skills, access job opportunities and live more independent lives. It does this through its resource and training centres, through its residential and supported accommodation services and through its respite care, outreach and homebased services. To register as a 1 Day for Rehab volunteer or to receive a fundraising pack, which includes all the tips needed to get an event up and running, contact the fundraising team on DouglasPostAd:Layout 1 18/08/2009 12:00 Page 1 01 210 0520.

Discover Cork: Schools’ Heritage Project, 2011 A total of 24 schools in Cork City took part in the 2011 Discover Cork: Schools’ Heritage Project. Circa 700 students participated in the process with approx 189 projects submitted on all aspects of Cork’s heritage. The Discover Cork: Schools’ Heritage Project is a youth forum for students to do research and offer their opinions on important decisions being made on their heritage in their locality and how they affect the lives of people locally. The aim of the project is to allow students to explore, investigate and debate their local heritage in a constructive, active and fun way. Co-ordinator and founder of the project, Cllr Kieran McCarthy noted that “The project is about thinking about, understanding, appreciating and making relevant in today’s society the role of our heritage- our landmarks, our oral histories, our scenery in our modern world for upcoming citizens. So the project is about splicing together activity on issues of local history and heritage such as thinking, exploring, observing, thinking, discovering, researching, uncovering, revealing, interpreting and resolving. The Schools’ Heritage Project also focuses on motivating and inspiring young people, giving them an opportunity to develop leadership and self development skills, which are very important in the world we live in today.” The City edition of the Project is funded by Cork Civic Trust, Cork City Council, The Heritage Council, Cllr Kieran McCarthy, Lifetime Lab and Sean Kelly of Lucky Meadows Equestrian Centre. Full results for the City edition and the County edition of the project are online on Cllr McCarthy’s heritage website, www.corkheritage..ie.

Snippets from the Local and National Scene By Pat Harrington Cork Minor Hurling On May 8th. Cork are knocked out of the minor hurling championship. You know, there is something I find very strange. My understanding is (and feel free to correct me if I’m wrong) minor teams at intercounty level cannot train before March 1st. Whilst the hurlers adhered to this dictum the footballers have been training since January. A letter writer to De Paper last week prior to the Tipperary game maintained that the best players are not being picked. A Tipp supporter coming out of Thurles after the game was heard to remark it was the worst Cork minor team he had seen in twenty years. Cork were defeated by ten points. I read recently that the standard of Harty teams in Cork doesn’t really matter; I beg to differ. Limerick defeated Cork at minor level recently for the first time in a while. I believe the Shannonsiders had six Árd Scoil Rís players who had reached the all-Ireland colleges’ final. Waterford colleges are making good strides, as is the Waterford minor county team. Comment was made that there are more schools now and there is a need to tap into these valuable sources. A major problem is that some schools lack the expertise to promote hurling, or perhaps they are not sufficiently interested. There’s no doubt that if a school is to have successful teams it is essential to have
people on board with an interest in our games and a willingness to instill that enthusiasm in the students. This year, I think Chríost Rí struck the perfect balance. When they were training for An Corn Uí Mhuire (football) the students went back to class at night to ensure continuity of study. Charleville C.B.S. were beaten by a score a man in the 2011 Harty Cup final. A former Cork county hurler proposed separate northside and southside colleges teams representing Cork in the Harty Cup – and why not? Are we in denial as to where Cork hurling is at? We are told that our development squads are doing well in competitions such as the Tony Forestall Cup. That is all very well but it’s a big step up from there to minor. Here I ask the question, are new management faces needed or are we to accept the players are not there? No doubt the knives are already out. But it is solutions we need now, not knocking for knocking’s sake. Right now is the time to put people in place to examine the problem; people from outside of the senior board. It has been stated that Coiste Na nÓg (the new minor and underage board) will solve a lot of problems. I think things are more deep-rooted than that. The biggest challenge at minor level is to accept that Cork hurling has fallen behind the likes of Galway and Kilkenny and is beginning to fall behind in Munster also. Such acceptance
would at least be a starting point. It is not good enough to say that Cork, being Cork will always be capable of achieving success. It’s now time to change from plan A (whatever that may have been) and move forward with a new game plan. There is little point in saying that Cork were very unlucky last year against Waterford. Winning is a habit we develop, alas, so is losing. Football & Hurling The following heading appeared on the back page of the Evening Echo “Hurling paying the price for football success”. Joe Deane made the point that the success of Cork football along with the poor run at adult and underage hurling is having an adverse impact on the small ball game. In past decades players who would have opted for hurling are now likely to throw in their lot with the footballers. This is something that has negative affects also at club level. People tend to choose the game that is achieving most success – be it football or hurling. This success in one game may well camouflage what is happening in the other. Obviously any game will suffer if players are opting out. Those at committee level must be awake and alert to the situation. To ignore the problem is not the answer to the fall-out. Unless club members have a vision for the future the weaker game will undoubtedly continue to show a decline in standards.

DOUGLAS GAA Junior “A” Football Championship:
Douglas 0-14 Rathpeacon 0-06: Douglas finished strongly against Rathpeacon with seven points in the last ten minutes to gain their place in the next round of the Junior “A” football championship. The Douglas challenge was founded on a formidable half back line where veterans Andrew Shinnock, Nail Gannon and Dave McSweeney were the source of several attacks. Up front Gary McLoughlin scored Douglas’ opening point and along with Conor O’Donnell was a constant thorn in the Rathpeacon defence. James Moylan finished the game with two points for Douglas while Albert Clarke, Patrick McSweeney and Michael Carroll also got on
the scoresheet. Douglas claim Cork Community Games Football & Hurling Double: Eddie Murphy’s love affair with the Cork Community Games continued last Saturday when his U-10 footballers defeated Glanmire to claim a 16th Cork title in a row for Douglas. Playing with the aid of the wind Douglas struck early. Good work from Alan O’Hare and Fionn Sheehan, who had earlier in the day received his First Holy Communion, set up full forward Diarmaid McCarthy for a hat trick of first half goals. The second half saw the Douglas defence under a lot more pressure where Max White was superb in goal with Seán Nyhan, Kevin Roche and team captain Niall Barrett solid throughout. At

Performance of the season from the boys as they stunned a very strong Park Utd side unbeaten in this division all year. Liam O’Sullivan was lightning quick out of the blocks and putting enormous pressure on the Park back four right from the start, he got his reward almost immediately when he rounded the Park centre half and slotted past the keeper for his fourth in four games. Looking assured at the back the boys defence and midfield snuffed out everything that Park had to offer and it wasn’t long before they went two up, Sam Downes blocking a clearance from Park led to a mix-up between their keeper and defender and Sam was on hand again to tap it into an empty net. Park were under intense pressure to deliver in the second half and playing with a strong wind kept pumping balls into the Corinthians penalty area, the boys dealt admirably with them but one lapse in concentration and Park capitalised to make it 2-1 with 20 minutes to go. A free kick from outside the box was brilliantly saved by Eric Hyland when it looked to be a certain equaliser but moments later a speculative kick forward from Park deceived Eric with a high bounce and looped into the net to make it two apiece. Dylan Virgo was very unlucky just before to end with a shot to win it for the boys but the keeper collected. Superb squad performance from the entire 16 of Eric Hyland, David Fischer, Jack Lyons, Brendan Powter, Adam Walsh, Paul Barry, Cameron White, Conor Nash, Karl Hyde, Liam O’Sullivan, Sam Downes, Liam McCarthy, Rory Kennedy, Luke Schum, Joe Cremin and Dylan Virgo
Division 5 Corinthian Boys C 5 Corkbeg 0
Corinthians started brightly and went ahead with a great goal from Conor Fagen following a super run and cross from Harry Deane. A second goal in the form of an OG came as a result of great football from Cian Morgan and Mark Cronin delivering a superb cross forcing the defender into the mistake .While Corinthians were well on top Corkbeg always looked dangerous going forward and were kept at bay throughout the match not only due to some superb saves from Cuchulain Livingstone in goal but also a defensive goal line clearance from Mark Morley. Corinthians were well marshalled by Conor Russell in which Alan Kelleher and Mark Fitzgibbon covered the forwards movement very well. A third goal from Jaze Kabia following some good work from Daniel O Donovan further stretched Corinthians lead before the break. In the second half a second goal for Conor Fagen following some great chasing down of the ball and a fine strike from Padraig Nash following a great pass from Harvey Cummins, saw Corinthians run out worthy winners.

The top two in the under 14 Premier Division met on Friday night in Corinthian’s Park and produced a high quality contest with Corinthian’s deservedly taking the three points. The victory leaves Corinthian’s three points behind Lakewood with four games to play and an exciting finish to the season in prospect. Corinthian’s went into the game knowing that a victory was vital if they were to win this years league title and they put on an excellent all round team performance with everyone playing their part. Goals came from Corey Galvin, Alex O’ Sullivan and a superb strike from Craig Donnellan. The teams thoughts will now turn to Monday nights cup semi final when they take on Mayfield in Corinthians park, kick off 6:45pm.

Fielding only four of last year’s squad, Corinthian’s turned in a fine team effort to earn a share of the spoils from a strong Leeds side. Great credit must go to the lads for putting in such a fine performance with Ross O’ Donovan outstanding in goal and Shane daly, Aaron baldwin, Dylan O’ Halloran and Dave Mc Carthy also turning in fine performances.
