by George Thompson - Editor

Fr. Mathew’s Basketball Club I was at Rochestown Park hotel last Sunday for the Fr. Mathew’s basketball club’s annual awards day where all teams were honoured for their achievements and exploits during the 2010/2011 basketball season. Many league titles were won at underage level while the U14 boy’s team created history by winning the All Ireland Club title back to back. Now recognised as the second largest club in the Country, Fr. Mathews is a club going from strength with a strong base of young players and a growing academy. Well done to the club for putting on a great day last Sunday and on the 14 titles won. Ashton Transition Year Students celebrate Transition Year Students at Aston School were recently presented with awards and certificates in recognition of their dedication and commitment to all the assignments and challenges set for them during the year, by Guest of Honour Mary Davis Chairperson of the Special Olympics in Europe and Eurasia. In a break with tradition, and in recognition of one of his final formal functions as Principal, Bertie Smith presented the Bertie Smith Perpetual Cup, to the overall Transition Year Student of the Year 2011, Gary Wilkinson from Douglas. This announcement was greeted with tumultuous and warm applause by his peers, such is the esteem in which he is held. Year Head, Dorothy Fogarty extended congratulations to Gary Wilkinson and to his parents, a most worthy recipient. Mad Pride Family Fun Day Mad Pride Family Fun Day is to be held in Fitzgerald’s Park on Sunday June 5th from 1pm to 5pm. Kila will play a live, free gig on the main stage and will join a host of other acts including, Novella Hermosa, The Dizzy Blues Band and others. The event will also see street theatre, clowns, face painting that is all free and open to the public. For those looking to make it a picnic day there will also be various stalls selling food and drink at the event. Mad Pride Family Fun Day is in its fourth year having held its inaugural event in Cork’s Fitzgerald’s Park in 2008 it has seen over 41,500 people attend its annual events. Organiser John McCarthy is hoping that the people of Cork will once again come out in huge numbers for the June 5th event. F.A.I. CUP I have great memories as a young boy, watching Cork Hibs contesting many a F.A.I. Cup campaign up and down the country and indeed watching the famous Cork club, on numerous occasions contest the final including a replay at Flower Lodge. Glory Days of Irish soccer but today many local league clubs get their chance to compete against the Premier clubs for their chance to upset the ‘apple cart’ and achieve their episode of glory and become giant killers. Such is the case this Friday when Douglas Hall take on the mighty Bohemians at Dalymount Park in the FAI Senior Cup 3rd with a 7:45pm kick off and we at The Post wish them the best of luck! On Wednesday, June 8th Douglas Hall Seniors have their final game of the season with a Beamish Cup Final. Blarney Utd. are the opposition Turners Cross with a 7:30pm kick off and I hope to be there.

“Hanging Garden” Dear Editor The revelations in the media last weekend about the cost of the “hanging garden” commissioned by Cork City Council from celebrity gardener Diarmuid Gavin are frankly incredible. At a time of severe cutbacks in council services, people will justifiably be asking many questions around this project. Firstly there is the issue of what this garden will actually cost the council, including its ongoing maintenance in the future. There appear to be several contradictory accounts of the cost and it is important that council officials give a clear and detailed breakdown of the final bill. Secondly there is the issue of how this project was authorised and why it has only come into the public domain now. I also have questions around the circumstances of the alleged intervention by Tourism Minister Leo Varadkar. It was suggested in the media over the weekend that when city officials were expressing reservations over the project Minister Varadkar stepped in and shortly after it received the go-ahead. I would like to know if this is the case and, if so, what was

the nature of Minister Varadkar’s intervention with the city council. Overall, this episode raises serious questions over how money is spent by the council and about transparency and accountability in its budgetary procedures. Yours truly, Cllr Mick Nugent 087-6755793

RICH MAN, RICH MAN! Dear Editor Silver spoon in mouth, R.T.E.s George Lee speaks with forked tongue. 95% of misfortunate souls signing on for the dole, would much rather be working and providing for their families. Similar to a tree, Ireland’s present woes must be tackled from the top. Trim the tree of wealth from those who can afford to pay. If you take an axe to thos at Grange the bottom, children will go hungry and we are in a no-win situation. The poor will always be with us because the rich go away for their summer holiday! God save Ireland!! Neil O’Donoghue Greenhills

Faction fighting: A critique Dear Editor, The underlying reasons for the outbreak of Faction Fighting in Ireland, particularly in the first three decades of the nineteenth century, was grounded in the lack of any cohesive social or political organization in the country; this followed the total defeat of the United Irishmen’s two revolution of 1798 and 1803. The dissolving of the Irish House of Commons: this lead to the parochial focus of the parish disconnected from a neighbouring parish with no coherent ideology. Society was turning in on itself which gave a basis to Faction Fighting. With the development of two political organizations in the country namely, Daniel O’Connell’s Lieutenants and the Young Irelanders who had a paper called “The Nation”, started to give a broader outlook to the population when the nation became more important than the

parish. Daniel O’Connell’s Lieutenants were driven by confessional nationalism. The philosophy of the Young Irelanders was a radical, secular republicanism. The chasm between both parties led to many clashes. Waterford was a stronghold of the Young Irelanders, so Daniel O’Connell and his Lieutenants had to abandon a meeting in Dungarvan. O’Connell was so outraged that he described Dungarvan as “the pisspot of Ireland”. As more and more people were drawn into campaigning in national issues, the concept of Faction Fighting became irrelevant. A number of people were so concerned about the younger generation receiving severe injuries during fighting, that there was social pressure to put an end to faction fighting. This critique is merely a synopsis of the reasons for the rise in decline in faction fighting. Con O’Mahony Grangewood Court Douglas

Bill Wallace - Pigeon Flyer By Mark Henry Bill Wallace lives and breathes pigeons. A member of the Cork Southern Flying Club on Bandon Road, he is an ambassador for the sport of pigeon racing and always willing to help with advice. Bill began pigeon racing in 1993 and has since achieved 82 first places at club level and 12 firsts in Cork City Federation races which is combined clubs. Last year alone, Bill had 10 firsts in the Club and 4 Federation wins. Recently Bill took all 5 first places in a club meeting while only last week took 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 7th places in one club race. Racing pigeons are treated as athletes, taking a lot of experience to know what bird to breed and race, what feeds to use at different times etc. All the birds are released regularly for training – fitness and ability to return quickly are all important in pigeon racing. Now pigeon racing is gone high tec – birds are fitted with microchip race rings at a club on the night before a race then loaded on race day and transported by specially adapted truck to a release point. There are handicaps applied depending on the location of the flyer from the club house. When the birds return, the microchip on their racing band is read by a

sensor on the landing board of the owners loft and recorded on the club computer. If you would like to find out more about pigeon

racing contact Mark Henry by e-mailing mark@douglaspost.ie and I will forward your query to clubs.

Family Ties with Geraldine Blake

Freewheelin’ in Donnybrook My car broke down the other night. It was a typical hectic Monday evening for me; collect the youngest from GAA at 6pm, then head up to Donnybrook for the eldest who finishes soccer at 6.30 and the middle guy, same venue but he didn’t finish until 7.oopm. I brought along my Stephen King book and told them to run around and play until it was time to go. Thank God for long summer evenings. At 7pm, the three boys climbed into the car sweaty, weary and starving for their dinner. I went to start the car. The battery was dead. I rang our insurance company which offered a break down service and help line which must be in Scotland judging by the accent. I told the girl that I didn’t know the name of the hill I was on but that I was in Donnybrook, Douglas. She said that a mechanic would be out in an hour. The boys started whining. I rang my

mother and sacrificing Coronation Street; she was out like a bullet and whisked them away leaving me to my fate. I had my book and an unexpected quiet hour, I was content. An hour later, my mobile rang and a thick Dublin accent said, "How’re ya?" My heart sank. I said, "You're in Dublin, aren't you?" He said, "Yeah, I'm in Donnybrook, where are you?" Wrong Donnybrook. I told him that I was in Cork to which he replied, "Well I'm no good to you so, am I?!" and hung up. I rang the insurance company again. I was told that I was now ‘Priority’ but that nobody could get to me before 10pm. I explained to the girl that I was in a football ground which was due to be locked up in the next half an hour. Miss Helpful suggested that I find a man to wheel the car out onto the road and to wait there. I went looking for manly assistance. I approached my son’s coach and he and two others readily agreed to push me out the gate. It was comical driving steadily backwards across a field with three men on my bonnet. Once on the road, the coach suggested that since I was near the top of the hill, I should freewheel down and try jump start the car myself by pumping the clutch. I had seen my father do it countless times as a child in our knackered car; the 12 year old thrill seeker inside of me was tempted to take on the challenge of careering through a residential area in an out-of-control car.

Young @ Heart by Phil Goodman

Young at Heart Say no to Ageism week 2011 takes place from the 30th May to June 4th. The week provides an opportunity to remind us of the consequences of ageism in service provisions, it aims to raise public awareness about stereotyping of older people to promote and support practical action for "Age friendly service provision in key sector". The June Bank Holiday is upon us and also the start of summer and hopefully good weather to enjoy. It is predicted Cork will have the hottest summer on record for June and July. We don't need that all we want is temperatures in the 20s and enjoy the long balmy days and nights. Our visit to Glenstall Abbey in Limerick was a great experience, we had a guided tour of the Bible Garden, Icon Church, admired the beautiful Mary Magdalen Roses and the smell of incense in the garden. We may do this trip again in July for those who were unable to go this time, a big thank you to Ar Cuthert for making it a very special day for our Young at Heart group.. On Tuesday 7th of June we leave Douglas at 10 o clock for the Ring of Kerry trip. First stop will be the Mucross House for refreshments, then Glenbeigh, Caherciveen, Caherdaniel, Waterville and on to Derrynane Hotel for our over night stay. Weather permitting next day

we hope to go to Carrolls Cove a lovely beach with white sand and dip our toes in the water, take in Sneem, Molls Gap, Ladies view etc. We will have dinner in Castle Hotel in Macroom on Wednesday. There is a change in trip on 14th June, we were going to Maritime College that visit will be at a later day, instead we will go to the Rock of Cashel, have a guided tour and on to Lismore. If anyone would like to Volunteer for the "Care-Ring Douglas" phone service please contact me on 4363867, all volunteers are H.S.E trained and Garda vetted. We have a stand at the Car Volunteer Fair in the City Hall on the 10th, 11th, 12th June, we would welcome volunteers to do a few hours on our stand each day. P.S Our trip to Sherkin has been deferred until the 28th of June as we will all be joining in the celebrations of Father Liam’s 50 years in the priesthood.

Airlines must engage with Government on abolition of travel tax Fine Gael TD for Cork South Central, Jerry Buttimer, yesterday called on airlines to engage with Government on the abolition of travel tax as part of the Jobs Initiative. Speaking during the debate on the Finance (No.2) bill in the Dail yesterday evening, Deputy Buttimer also welcomed the statement from Minister Noonan that the Government will not raid investment funds or deposit accounts. “This finance bill is a new beginning; a significant step towards instilling confidence in employers and in those seeking employment - and I welcome the stimulus measures which were recently announced by the Minister for Finance, at last we have a government with a plan, a vision. “I very much welcome the suspension of the air travel tax. Airlines must now respond to the Government’s proposal. The Government has honoured its commitment, now the airlines must now reciprocate. I am calling on Ryanair, Aer Lingus and other carriers to act in the interest of the country and enter into agreement with the Government open new routes and increase passenger numbers. “I also welcome the statement by the Minister for Finance when he made it clear that Government will not raid investment funds or deposit accounts. It is critical that we put people’s fears to rest and assure them that the pension levy is a temporary step which will yield much needed financial revenue to help get people back to work.”

Irish Chopper – Ger Conlon Style

• Ger Conlon master bike builder with his award winning chopper 'Rattle 'n' Hum' Pic:George Thompson

Words & Pics by George Thompson With ‘American Chopper’ bringing the art of custom bike building into our living rooms and onto our TV screens, there have been many bike builders, fabricators and painters creating magnificent bikes and works of art for decades in this country and indeed in Cork. One of these magicians is Ger Conlon, a name synonymous with custom bike building and painting for many years winning many awards for his genius while appearing in many custom bike publications. In a perfect world Ger Conlon would love to build custom bikes fulltime but unfortunately living in Ireland has its restrictions with a low demand for prized custom bikes. Ger’s latest creation is the award winning ‘Rattle ‘n’ Hum’ a ‘freestyle’ chopper which won the Best of Show at the Irish Motorcycle and Scooter Show earlier this year at the R.D.S. in

Dublin. The bike will be shipped to Sturgis in the USA in August to represent Ireland in the world championship of custom bike building. C&C Choppers has also worked on the two previous bikes that represented Ireland in the last four years. The bike that went over two years back came in 18th place overall. Ger is a member of the Ducks Custom Bike Club whose members all build and ride custom bikes and trikes and the master craftsman would like to pay a special thanks to the many friends and club members who helped out with building the bike, way too many to list here. The bike is for sale for €30,000 but it won’t be available until it returns from America, hopefully a winner! Ger has had much interest from American enthusiasts while recently a client from Boston has

been in touch regarding having an Irish Chopper built for and shipped Stateside. Painting motorcycles (either standard resprays or vintage and classic restoration work), helmets, cars, guitars, trucks etc. is Ger’s main business while he specializes in custom airbrush work and now taking bookings for new builds or modifications. turned backwards. It has been modified to take two rear cylinder heads, each one fed by a twin choke Webber carb. Primary drive is by a double link open chain and a modified rev lock automatic clutch. The 6 speed gearbox is also turned backwards and final drive is by a friction wheel. No chain or belt to run this bike. Wheels are 120 spoke each the rear is 300 wide. The front forks, wheels, frame, petrol/oil tanks, seat, bars, pipes, carb manifolds and almost everything else is totally one off and all made in house at C&C Choppers.

The larger bikes are factory restricted to 25 KW.

Cork ICSA advise motorist safety ahead of harvest season The Cork branch of the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers’ Association (ICSA) have advised both the farming and non-farming communities to ensure that country roads are a safe place to be this summer. This is the busiest time of year for farmers as it coincides with the silage and harvest season. Non-farming motorists have been asked to expect an increase in the agricultural vehicles that they will meet on roads over the next couple of months. All road users are being advised to watch out for tractors, trailers and other farm machinery exiting from fields and farmyards and to exercise caution when travelling behind or meeting such vehicles on the public road. Dermot Kelleher, ICSA Suckler Committee chairman and Cork farmer, said: “The harvest season can be a frustrating time for every motorist so we are asking and advising all motorists to maintain vigilance when travelling on country roads. There will be a significant increase in the volume of traffic on the county’s roads and this has the potential to cause frustration among road users. We would ask those who are not accustomed to rural roads during this period to be extra vigilant and remain patient when they meet agricultural vehicles. Farmers must also do their part by ensuring that all their brakes, lights and other equipment are in full working order before taking to the road. “Over the next number of weeks, the vast majority of winter feed for the entire national herd will be harvested. This feed is imperative to continue to fund our €8 billion export led market. Farmers, of course, also have to play their part and make sure that the roads are a safe place to be for all motorists. We are encouraging all farmers to be extra careful and aware of traffic on the road for the entirety of the harvest season. Accidents can occur at any time but with extra traffic and larger vehicles on the roads, the risks are increased.”

Hair loss Your hair loss may have started with a few extra hairs in the sink or in your comb. But now you can't look in the mirror without seeing more of your scalp. Baldness typically refers to excessive hair loss from your scalp and can be the result of heredity, certain medications or an underlying medical condition. Anyone — men, women and children — can experience hair loss. The medical term for hair loss is alopecia. Pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia), the most common type of alopecia, affects roughly one-third of men and women. It's typically permanent. Other types of alopecia are temporary, including alopecia areata. It can involve hair loss on your scalp or other parts of your body. Your hair goes through a cycle of growth and rest. The course of each cycle varies by

How do I handle mum’s Alzheimer’s?

Diabetes, what do I do now?

individual. But in general, the growth phase of scalp hair, known as anagen, typically lasts two to three years. During this time, your hair grows about 1 centimeter (just less than 1/2 inch) a month. The resting phase is called telogen. This phase typically lasts three to four months. At the end of the resting phase, the hair strand falls out and a new one begins to grow in its place. Once a hair is shed, the growth stage begins again. Most people normally shed 50 to 100 hairs a day. But with about 100,000 hairs in the scalp, this amount of hair loss shouldn't cause noticeable thinning of the scalp hair. Gradual thinning is a normal part of aging. However, hair loss may lead to baldness when the rate of shedding exceeds the rate of regrowth, when new hair is thinner than the hair shed or when hair comes out in patches. Baldness, whether permanent or temporary, can't be cured. But hair loss treatments are

available to help promote hair growth or hide hair loss. For some types of alopecia, hair may resume growth without any treatment. Prevention The following tips can help keep your hair healthy and may minimize the appearance of hair loss: Eat a nutritionally balanced diet. Handle your hair gently. Whenever possible, allow your hair to air-dry naturally. Avoid tight hairstyles, such as braids, buns or ponytails. Avoid compulsively twisting, rubbing or pulling your hair. Check with hair care experts about hairpieces or styling techniques that help minimize the effects of balding. The over-thecounter (nonprescription) medication minoxidil (Rogaine) promotes new hair growth and prevents further hair loss in a small percentage of people. If you are worried about hair loss, contact your G.P. For more information contact Garvan at Lynch’s Pharmacy at 4366923.

In General

Mow spring-flowering wild lawns and areas containing bulbs, and leave cut material to wither for a few days to release seeds

With the holiday season approaching, tidy and weed everywhere, and mulch wherever possible. Plant out celeriac after fully hardening off plants

Greenhouse Forcefully spray the foliage of greenhouse plants occasionally to deter red spider mite. Sow winter pansies, keeping them moist and cool at all times. Continue removing sideshoots from cordon tomatoes - these may be rooted as cuttings for more plants.

Water Garden Remove dead leaves from water lilies, using a long-arm pruner if necessary

Transplant leeks to their final positions, and water in well. Cut hard back herbs such as tarragon, winter savory and lemon balm to encourage young growth. Check gooseberries regularly for signs of sawfly caterpillars. Sow ridge cucumbers and gherkins direct in rich ground, especially beneath sweetcorn as ground cover. Dress rhubarb with general fertiliser and continue to remove flower stems.

Lawns & Hedges

st

Rejuvenate top-heavy shrubs and climbers such as roses now that growth is vigorous; bend stems down or prune to height. Finish bedding out with the most tender plants, such as cannas and ricinus. Deadhead lilac as the flowers fade. Cut back oriental poppies to ground level after flowering. Pinch out the tips of chrysanthemums to encourage more flowering stems to develop. Clip senecios and other flowering evergreens, if blooms are not required. Deadhead pansies and violas regularly to prolong flowering. Watch out for clematis

wilt, and treat promptly if seen. After flowering hard prune shrubby prunus species such as P. triloba to 8-10cm (3-4in) high.

The deluxe edition of the album was released in Ireland last month and hit platinum sales in France last week. Star violinist to appear in Bantry this summer One of the stars of the classical music world, violinist Nicola Benedetti returns to the West Cork Chamber Music Festival this summer for an eagerly awaited series of concerts in Bantry. She has captivated audiences and critics alike with her huge talent and her elegant stage presence. Her dynamic and energy-filled performances enthrall audiences throughout the world and her appearance in Bantry will be a particular highlight of this 16th Festival. Nicola was catapulted to fame after being named BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2004 and since then has concentrated on more rarely-programmed works and new music. Nicola comes from Scotland and has recorded newly commissioned works by John Tavener and James Macmillan, has worked on jazz-influenced repertoire with Wynton Marsalis and explored authentic baroque performance. The Bantry audience will be able to hear her join usual partners cellist Leonard Elschenbroich and pianist Alexei Grynyuk for a delightful late night performance of Rachmaninov's Trio Élégiaque in D minor 'In Memory of a Great Artist' on Tuesday 28 June in the initimate setting of the library in Bantry House. The following afternoon, St Brendan's Church will come alive to the beautiful sound of Nicola and pianist Alexei Grynyuk

playing Beethoven's Violin Sonata in C minor and Richard Strauss' Violin Sonata in E flat. On Friday 1 July, Bantry House is the setting for Brahms' Piano Quartet in G minor performed by Nicola Benedetti, Leonard Elschenbroich, Alexei Grynyuk and the exciting young Israeli violist Amihai Grosz. The same group of musicians reappear for the Finale of this year's Festival when they perform Schumann's Piano Quartet in E flat. Also taking to the Bantry House stage for that concert which is always a Festival highlight, are top quartets from Ireland, France and the United States : RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet, Quatuor Diotima and Pacifica Quartet. Unsurprisingly tickets are selling quickly for Nicola Benedetti's performances and anyone who wishes to book, should do so quickly. The West Cork Chamber Music Festival is generously supported by the Arts Council of Ireland, the Culture Programme of the European Union and Failte Ireland. Tickets can be booked online at www.westcorkmusic.ie or by calling West Cork Music on 027 52788. The West Cork Chamber Music Festival features concerts from morning to late night in St Brendan's Church, Bantry and Bantry House. Among those performing this year are Pacifica Quartet, Auryn Quartet, Quatuor Diotima, Irish Chamber Orchestra, Robin Tritschler, Christian Poltera, Tai Murray, Cédric Tiberghien, Barokksolistene, Graham Johnson and many more. A violin making exhibition takes place during the week in the Old Cinema. This is a rare opportunity to watch Ireland's violin and bowmakers at work.

I was born and raised in England and I am proud of my English background. I had never thought a lot about the Royal family. I was neither pro nor anti. The Queen was just part of the cultural landscape, something quintessentially English, a familiar symbol of continuity. So when I first heard of her coming to Ireland, my main emotion was not excitement but anxiety. You see, about fifteen years ago I became a citizen of Ireland, a fact of which I am also very proud. This visit thus became something of significance to me personally. I have, if you like, a foot in both camps and the thought that something might happen to bring shame to either my old home or my new one worried me a good deal. I quite understand that my feelings would be of little importance to anyone except me. I found myself, however, metaphorically holding my breath. I needn’t have worried. The whole affair was conducted with such grace and dignity that the actions and words of all concerned made me proud of England and of Ireland which I think is called having your cake and eating it. Now I don’t suppose that thanks from me is going to make tuppence difference to anybody but I’m going to offer them nevertheless. So to Queen Elizabeth “Thank you, Your Majesty”, to the President” Thank you, Your Excellency” and to my fellow citizens especially “Thank you”. I am, indeed, proud to be Irish.

College Corinthians Cor B 3 Watergrasshill Utd A 1 Corinthians recorded a fine home win over Watergrasshill in their final league game last Wednesday night. Five minutes into the game Ian O'Shea made a great run through the Watergrasshill defence before setting up Gracia Mukwa to score the opening goal from close range. After the goal the match was evenly balanced throughout the first half with Watergrasshill having a few long range efforts stopped by a competent Bartosz Hofman. Late in the first half an in-form Ian O'Shea featured again when he kept his composure to score with a perfectly placed shot to the top right corner to give Corinthians a 2 - 0 lead at half time. In the second half Corinthians had the advantage of the strong wind but Watergrasshill fought back strongly and scored a fine goal after a good approach play. Corinthians settled again after the very lively Ronan Dwane saw a wind assisted long range effort bounce high into the roof of the net to put Corinthians 3 - 1 ahead. Corinthian's captain Geoff Spillane gave another quality display and Daragh Leen's high workrate also made a big contribution to this

win. So the season ends on a high note - well done to all the panel. Under 14 The Under 14’s had a mixed week losing out 1-0 to Avondale before recovering to get the better of Springfield Ramblers on a 2-0 scoreline. The victory leaves Corinthian’s needing one win from their last two games to clinch the league title and puts the team in good spirit for Monday nights cup final against Lakewood Ath. Soccer Marathon On behalf of the Club I would like to thank everyone who participated in the underage Soccer Marathon over the weekend. Your efforts were much appreciated. It is important now that everyone returns their sponsorship cards over the next week or so particularly with the incentive of a fabulous pair of College Corinthian’s football boots Street League Finals Day The finals of this years Underage Street Leagues will take place on Sunday June 12th, it promises to be a fun day for all the family with plenty of entertainment for young and old. Full details of the days events will be available shortly.

On Wednesday night (June 1st) the Senior team travel to Casement Pk to take on current league holders Rockmount in a playoff to decide this years Munster Senior League Premier Division title. Long term leaders Douglas Hall slipped up in the second half of the season and handed the momentum back to Rockmount, however two draws in their last two games left Rockmount level on points with Douglas Hall with all to play for. Following this on Thursday night (June 2nd) the MSL Juniors look to secure a double when they take on Passage Utd in the final of the MSL Junior Supercup. This game has a 7:30pm kick off in Turners Cross. Finally on Wednesday, June 8th the Seniors have their final game of the season with a Beamish Cup Final. Blarney Utd are the opposition in Turners Cross with a 7:30pm kick off.

G.A.A. FOCUS Snippets from the Local and National Scene By Pat Harrington It is Saturday and I am home alone, with just Benny the Cairn terrier for company. My chosen subject for this week’s column is the changing face of sport over the past fifty years. As I commence my task I am not sure where to begin or if in fact there is an end. I was brought up on a diet of Gaelic football and hurling. My father used to take my brother Tom and me to a game every Sunday in the Bedford van, usually picking up a passenger along the way. We travelled to Thurles, Killarney and Cork Athletic Grounds (The Park, now Páirc Uí Chaoimh) and Clonmel in our notable mode of transport. Once on the journey home from Clonmel we had a frightening experience when a tyre blew out while travelling at pace – thankfully we escaped without a scratch. At about thirteen years of age I played soccer, a fact of which my father did not approve. As kids we played soccer in Canty’s field for hours on end. At the time I was playing Gaelic games with Redmonds, based at Tower Street and we were struggling. Around 1973 this club became very competitive at junior level and we had a young team. On Monday nights I went to Flower Lodge to watch ‘Match of the Day’. We saw perhaps twenty minutes of highlights of each game and it looked spectacular. The League of Ireland was flying in Cork; at the time Hibs and Celtic attracted huge attendances. English, Spanish and Italian soccer was not getting the coverage which it now enjoys. Cork Hibs drew attendances of 25,000 on a few occasions. Rugby was all about internationals then and received T.V. coverage. The club scene developed and the likes of Cork Con, Young Munster and Garryowen drew decent crowds. The turning point came when the game went professional. Whether it was a case of improved marketing standards or coverage the game has grown immeasurably. I have always believed that people like

to be part of something that is successful. It is now the in thing to be seen to don the colours or to fly the flag on the car. Undoubtedly there is currently great support for Rugby. One wonders if the machine that is Munster Rugby failed for a few years would it retain the same following. League of Ireland soccer has struggled with a decline in numbers due to the huge television coverage of the game from other countries. I don’t wish to knock the Irish game but the standard to say the least would be of an inferior quality. The G.A.A. has struggled with falling attendances. Just like the current rugby situation people joined the merry-go-round but sizeable numbers have since fallen away. No doubt the intercounty jerseys are very attractive and it is great to see them worn with pride by both children and adults. Personally I find rugby more pleasing to the eye than soccer; though in years to come I can visualize rugby players suffering big-time from all the hard physical knocks they receive throughout their careers. The G.A.A. is being left behind in a marketing sense by the R.F.U. Thomond Park is normally festooned with flags. More kids are now going to watch Munster play than ever before. I am trying to be positive by sending a wakeup call to our association. There is competition out there and children have choices. It’s time to wake up before it’s too late. Children will follow the sport that appeals most to them and they will always recognise a winner. Dads have a major part to play as well, as they have had down through the decades. Heroes are a great attraction for the youth of today and these role models clearly win over the hearts and minds of our young people. I am not necessarily criticizing the idea of heroes. Growing up I had my own favourites: Pele, Tastäo, Eusebio and Best. In Gaelic games there was Ray Cummins, Charlie McCarthy, Declan Barron and Jimmy Barry Murphy. In rugby

we had Willie John McBride, Mike Gibson and Gareth Edwards. Yes, heroes and great sportspeople have always commanded

popularity. Nowadays television and general media exposure have brought those stars much more to the fore.
