The Word

by George Thompson - Editor

Highways As I drove to Kildare on Friday morning I heard the usual Bank Holiday statement on the radio that the Garda Traffic Corps would be out in force on the country’s roads. They must have been undercover because I didn’t see any, in both directions. While I have mentioned in the past, it’s one thing being in control of one’s own driving, it’s the other nutters on the road that need to be paid attention to. I am happy to say that I only saw one instance of lunacy on my way back from Kildare on Friday evening, when a large C reg Merc tailgated, undertook and overtook at well over the 120kph limit. The road network between Cork and Dublin is a pleasure to drive now, as is many of the other road networks in the country with much shorter travel time. I have one observation though and that is while there are rest areas along the way to pull over for a driving break, it would be good to have ‘Services’ at some point on the major routes. 100 Blisters for Cancer Care Group Cúnamh On Saturday July 16th Blisters Hillwalking Group are trying to get 100 people to walk with them and raise much needed funds for Cúnamh www.cunamh.ie Cúnamh began in 1996 when a group of patients got together to provide support to one another while undergoing treatment. Help win €100k for your favourite heart charity Dear Editor, This June marks World Heart Rhythm Week (6th - 12th June) and the Irish Heart Foundation is calling on the nation to make Ireland’s voice heard and help win €100,000 for their national heart disease and stroke charity. The Irish Heart Foundation has been shortlisted in a global competition for stroke awareness funding and your readers could help save Irish lives by voting for us online today. Our project, ‘The Truth about A Fib’ is an awareness campaign on the dangers of the heart condition Atrial Fibrillation. If left undiagnosed, people with A Fib are five times more likely to have a stroke, but with the correct treatment this number can be greatly reduced. The Irish Heart Foundation will use the €100,000 to roll out a national awareness campaign across Ireland on ‘The Truth about A Fib’, if voted the winners in our category. The only thing now standing in the way of a life saving Irish A Fib campaign is the support of the public. Every single vote counts. We are calling on your readers to help save lives by

logging on to www.heartofstroke. com/truthaboutafibinireland and registering their vote today for free. I’d like to thank your readers for their generous support of the Irish Heart Foundation and unwavering commitment in the fight against heart disease and stroke across Ireland. Yours sincerely, Michael O’Shea Chief Executive Irish Heart Foundation

INHERIT THE WIND Dear Editor Sadly the language emanating from Dail Eireann leaves me with a sense of deja vu. Historical Walking Tour & Model Boat Competition

On Saturday, 11th June St Finbarr’s Hospital will be holding its annual Garden Party from 1.30 to 4.30 pm. As part of a whole series of events planned, Cllr Kieran McCarthy invites the general public to take part in a free historical walking tour of St. Finbarre’s Hospital at 1.30p.m. (meet at gate). The workhouse, which opened in December 1841, was an isolated place – built beyond the toll house and toll gates, which gave entry to the city and which stood just below the end of the wall of St. Finbarr’s Hospital in the vicinity of the junction of the Douglas and Ballinlough Roads. The Douglas Road workhouse was also one of the first of over 130 workhouses to be designed by the Poor Law Commissioners’ architect George Wilkinson. Cllr. Kieran McCarthy also invites all Cork young people (primary and secondary) to participate in McCarthy’s ‘Make a Model Boat Project’. All interested must make a model boat at home from recycled materials and bring it along for judging to the Atlantic Pond on Sunday afternoon, 12 June 2011, 2pm. This project is in conjunction with the Ocean to City Martime Festival. See www.kieranmccarthy.ie under community programme for details and an application form.

STAFF PROFILE Hi My name is Janette and I have been training with Artisan now for nearly four years. I am now progressing into a stylist and am very excited! I love all aspects of hairdressing especially colouring and cutting. Hairdressing is a really rewarding job as you can transform anyone’s look and have them leaving feeling like a whole new person. I am currently involved in the Joico Cut and Colour course in the MOHN Academy in Athlone. This has been a brilliant and very insightful course already. I have just completed the first stage and am back up in September. I love being able to continue training and advancing all of my skills and knowledge to a higher level.

Testimonial

I love Janette doing my hair because she is friendly, listens to me and comes up with great ideas and different looks and styles to wear my hair, and I always leave feeling great.

Sharon Moloney, Bishopstown. I have been a cliet of Artisan 2 Salon since it opened in Parkgate. Janette’s bubbly, friendly personality along with her excellent knowledge and attention to detail helps make each visit a pleasant experience. Teresa O’Shaughnessy Frankfield.

Many different departments were represented on the night, from the shoe to the haberdashery, through to the old coffee bar, which was once located on Merchant Street, separate from the main store. The evening was particularly memorable for key holder Tony Sheehan , who was given a surprise presentation, in the presence of his wife Winnie, daughter, Gillian and family friend Theresa O’Donovan, to celebrate his recent retirement. ‘I just could not believe it, to see so many faces that I knew going back since my time in sales. It’s true what they say, there’s no place like Roches Stores!’ Many recounted the trading practices of the times, like how an item could be taken by a customer on an approbation docket and returned for payment the following day. To celebrate ten years of writing, Wicklow Writers recently have published “Anniversary”, a collection of short stories, poems, and even a comedy play. As the title suggests, “Anniversary” celebrates the founding of Wicklow Writers, which was formed ten years ago in Wicklow Town. Last year Martin Swords, a prominent member of the Wicklow Writers Group, sent us a lovely lyrical poem called “As I Came Over Wicklow Gap”. This week he presents us with a thought provoking poem which he wrote almost three years ago, yet in view of next years Presidential Elections he couldn’t be more up to date. Check out Wicklow Writers.com you won’t be disappointed! I Stood in Line (November 4th 2008 - United States Presidential Elections) I stood in line Like a horse showing my teeth I stood in line While my chains were locked I stood in line For a bowl of soup I stood in line No poll tax in my pocket I stood in line To board the bus I stood in line To face the water cannon I stood in line To speak out I stood in line To be listened to This day I stood in line Proudly stood in the line Martin Swords Nov. 2008 Send your poem to ‘The Poetry Corner’ / Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas or you can email it direct to ronniemcginn@ eircom.net. Cork set to benefit from major tourism package Jerry Buttimer, TD, has said Cork should benefit from a major domestic tourism package launched recently by the Government, which includes a €1 million Discover Ireland Summer 2011 promotion campaign and discounts of up to 50% for weekend rail travel. Launched recently by Ministers Leo Varadkar, Michael Ring and Alan Kelly, Deputy Buttimer said the package is great news for both Irish holidaymakers and tourism businesses, and should bring many more visitors to Cork “This package should bring many more visitors to Cork. But it’s also great news for anyone thinking of taking a holiday at home – whether it’s a weekend break or a longer holiday. “Irish holidaymakers can take advantage of a 50% discount on online rail tickets for Saturday travel and some Sunday services from anywhere in Ireland. “As part of the scheme to incentivise rail travel €20 day return adult tickets will be available from Dublin to Cork on Saturdays, making our city centre the ideal place to spend a summer Saturday. While in Cork visitors have easy access to interesting attractions such as the Beamish Brewery Tour, Coal Quay Market, Cork Butter Museum, Cork City Gaol, St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral and The English Market. “Visitors can also get free tours informing them of both historical and contemporary Cork using audio iWalks, Flavours of Cork and Creative Cork, a progressive joint initiative of Cork City Council and Failte Ireland. “The 2011 Discover Ireland promotional campaign will be the biggest ever with €1 million allocated. Fáilte Ireland is making it easier than ever to find out what to do, and where to go. It has launched a new smart phone application which will tell you what’s on, what to do, and where to stay, wherever you are in the country. And its website has been revamped with more video content and an enhanced search facility. “Queen Elizabeth II and President Barack Obama were bowled over by what they saw in Ireland. Tourism is key to our economic recovery, and the Government has made the industry a priority. Thanks to the tourism focus in the Jobs Initiative, Irish tourism businesses have every reason to offer even better value for money this year. “As a city we gave a rebel welcome to a royal visitor and now we are ready to welcome others who want to holiday here. These tourism initiatives make Cork an even more attractive location for anyone holidaying at home this summer. Easy and cheap access to the City Centre, lots of attractions and free tours make Cork the ideal place for a day trip or a weekend away.”

Social Event about Social Media A The first networking meeting for Women in Business in Carrigaline and the surrounding areas took place on Thursday, 2nd June in the Bistro in the Carrigaline Court Hotel. The theme of the evening was the increasing importance of developing a strategy around the use of social media. Most businesses have developed a website but now businesses are looking at ways of connecting with customers using Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and building contacts through networking sites like LinkedIn. The guest speaker was Karen Buchanan, director with Ghostlight Media. Karen has extensive experience in designing and implementing marketing campaigns for businesses using traditional and non-traditional media. By the time Karen had finished her talk, heads were buzzing with all the information and the potential that the new forms of communication hold for all types of businesses. Over 60 women attended and took the opportunity to network after the talk while they enjoyed canapés on the terrace in the glorious sunshine. The event was very generously sponsored by the Carrigaline Court Hotel who provided the perfect setting for a great evening. The event was aimed at women already in business and women who are interested in starting their own businesses and is part of the SECAD Catalyst project. The next networking event will take place on 15th September.

First Ever Bumps, Babies and Buggies national fundraiser for Operation Smile 17th / 18th June - A coffee morning with a smile – Would you like to catch up with friends, family and neighbours while giving a facially deformed child a smile which will change their world forever? This June, Operation Smile is looking to Cork parents to host a coffee morning with the aim of changing many children’s lives. Bumps, Babies and Buggies, June 17th & 18th, 2011 is a coffee morning with a difference. It is an opportunity to meet friends old and new, relax over a coffee and talk the baby talk, while at the same time raising funds to support Operation Smile’s efforts to provide surgery for children with facial deformity in the developing world. More than 200,000 children are born globally with a cleft lip and/ or palate facial deformity each year — often unable to eat, speak, socialise or smile. In Ireland, corrective surgery is easily available, but in many countries these vulnerable children are shunned and rejected. Without outside help, thousands of children with facial deformities worldwide will never have the medical care they need to live a normal life. It can take as little as 45 minutes and €240 to change a child’s life forever. Operation Smile changes lives one smile at a time. Operation Smile Ireland is part of a global alliance of Operation Smile organisations working to serve children with facial deformity such as cleft lip and palate. Since 1982, Operation Smile has provided free surgery to more than 160,000 children around the world with the help of dedicated medical volunteers. With a presence in over 60 countries, Operation Smile is able to change lives, one smile at a time. With the help of mums and dads around Ireland, how many more lives can be changed?

Paediatric dental surgeon and mother of two young children, Dr. Eleanor McGovern is behind ‘Bumps, Babies and Buggies’ and has worked with Operation Smile in countries such as Ecuador, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Philippines and Russia. According to Dr. McGovern, “As parents or expectant parents we understand the importance of feeding our babies. We appreciate the joy when our baby gives that first smile! How would we feel if our baby struggled with feeding • Special guest Gerry Fish and Sharon Shannon pictured performing at the Bandon Music Festival on Saturday night. because we could not access the Pic: Diane Cusack care they needed? How would we feel if we knew our beautiful baby could have the surgery to make their face even more beautiful, but we could not afford it? Every infant born with a cleft lip and or palate should have access to all the care they need, regardless of where they are born.” “Connecting with family and friends is the most natural thing in the world. Out and About with Fergus O’Leary Walking back from the Post Office on Saturday morning I was stopped by one of the Tidy Towns volunteers who made what seems to me (indeed, it did when I was rather more closely involved in these things) a good point. The best thing that we can do to back up their excellent efforts is keep the stretch in front of our properties clear of both weeds and litter. There is absolutely no doubt that they have made an enormous difference to the appearance of our town but they can’t do everything on their own. They also need a more volunteers for the Saturday mornings. They meet up at ten o’clock at the old water tower opposite the Tavern. Even if you don’t have a whole heap of time to spare, every little helps. Those of us who live on estates can make a huge improvement through ourselves. You only have to look at Ardmore Estate to see the proof. The Tidy Towns Committee have made a concerted effort but we all have to muck in and never forget that when it comes to litter prevention is better than cure. So put your rubbish in your pocket and take it home and make sure your children do the same. I mentioned our new Post Office earlier and very smart it is too. I guess that what we have to remember is to support it properly. You can pay bills, wire money insure the car, all sorts. You can even post letters. The point I’m trying to make is that to keep our Post office we must use our Post Office. As seems to so often be the case when everything else is up the creek sport is good, or perhaps

I’m clutching at straws. Munster beat Leinster in the rugby and that is always mighty and Ireland beat Macedonia in Macedonia at football. Not convincingly, I’ll grant you, but a win nevertheless. There is one other area of sport an Irishman is excelling in and that is cricket. Because of the ICC regulations, Ireland cannot compete in Test Cricket. They should be allowed to. However, individual Irishmen can be selected to play for England and Eoin Morgan is playing for them at the moment. He’s good. Don’t take my word for it, just listen to the commentators on Sky. Whatever you think about the game, there is an Irishman playing at it at the very highest international level and he deserves our admiration. Latch, Harbour Heights, Passage West Hammergrin, Cork’s most exciting and innovative theatre company, presents a new site-specific spectacle, Latch, as part of the Cork Midsummer Festival 2011. CHRIST KING PRINCIPAL SALUTES LEAVING CERT STUDENTS: ‘OUR FUTURE IS IN YOUR HANDS’ The Principal of Christ King Girls Secondary School, Ms Mary Keane, has saluted all those who will be taking their Leaving Certificate examinations presently. Ms Keane said that these difficult times can be full of opportunities. Christ King, based on South Douglas Road, Cork has 250 students sitting exams this summer in subjects ranging from German to Japanese, graphic science to applied maths. Over

85% of its Leaving Certificate Students go on to third level education. “It may seem that this is bad time to be leaving the comfort of school and family life but our students must see that the glass is halffull rather than half empty. When the Leaving Cert is forgotten and you embark on your life journey to college or the world of work, these may seem like daunting times. We are told that our country is in chaos economically and that we are, as a nation, no longer affluent, but we are rich in ways few other countries are. We are educated. We are part of a country that values intelligence

and is increasingly focused on doing the best with we have in terms of drive, self-belief and innovation. Employers seek your skills; third level colleges want to take your skills and refine them further – you are the generation with the world at your feet because everyone in the country wants you to succeed – for Ireland’s sake – you are our future. For our girls who are lucky enough not to be sitting examinations I wish you a very happy summer. I hope you enjoy your time off

and try to come back relaxed and refreshed after the break. Remember, that even during the time-off you still are still a Christ King girl, so I know that you will all acquit yourselves accordingly whether you are working or enjoying what will hopefully be a sunny summer.” To the parents of Exam Students, Leaving and Junior Cert – they’ll be back to normal in a few weeks – they are just little stressed right now– we all remember what it was like.”

Acid Reflux Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic digestive disease that occurs when stomach acid or, occasionally, bile flows back (refluxes) into your food pipe (esophagus). The backwash of acid irritates the lining of your esophagus and causes GERD signs and symptoms. Signs and symptoms of GERD include acid reflux and heartburn. Both are common digestive conditions that most people experience from time to time. When these signs and symptoms occur more than twice each week or interfere with your daily life, doctors term this GERD. Most people can manage the discomfort of heartburn with lifestyle changes and overthe-counter medications. But for people with GERD, these remedies may offer only temporary relief. People with GERD may need stronger medications, even surgery, to reduce symptoms. Symptoms A burning sensation in your chest (heartburn), sometimes spreading to the throat, along with a sour taste in your mouth

How do I handle mum’s Alzheimer’s?

Diabetes, what do I do now?

Chest pain Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) Dry cough Hoarseness or sore throat Regurgitation of food or sour liquid (acid reflux) Sensation of a lump in the throat Treatment for heartburn and other signs and symptoms of GERD usually begins with overthe-counter medications that control acid. If you don't find relief within a few weeks, your doctor may recommend other treatments, including medications. Initial treatments to control heartburn Over-the-counter treatments that may help control heartburn include: Antacids that neutralize stomach acid. Medications to reduce acid production. Medications that block acid production and heal the esophagus. Prescription-strength medications If heartburn persists despite initial approaches, your doctor may recommend prescriptionstrength medications, such as: Prescription-strength H-2-receptor blockers. Prescription-strength proton pump inhibitors.

Medications to strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter. Lifestyle and home remedies Lifestyle changes may help reduce the frequency of heartburn. Consider trying to: Maintain a healthy weight. Avoid tight-fitting clothing. Avoid foods that trigger heartburn. Don't lie down after a meal. Elevate the head of your bed. Don't smoke. Alternative medicine No alternative medicines therapies are proven to treat GERD or to reverse damage to the esophagus. Still, some complementary and alternative therapies may provide some relief from the symptoms of GERD. Herbal remedies. Herbal remedies sometimes used for GERD symptoms include licorice, slippery elm, chamomile and marshmallow. Relaxation therapies. Techniques to calm stress and anxiety may reduce signs and symptoms of GERD. If you would like more information on treating and living with acid reflux, call Garvan at Lynch’s Pharmacy on 4366923.

BIKECRAFT with Eddy O’Shea I have been driving motorcycles for the past 40 years having purchased my first motorcycle from Frank Jones in Kanturk in 1971. Since then, I have owned and driven at least 20 different motorcycles. During that time my 3 children have driven motorcycles and to this day 2 of them still do. Motorcycles have often provided a basis for holidays, tours, and regular conversation in our house and I am sure will continue to do so in the future. Interesting trips during these time were several trips to France, Austrian and Italian Alps , The Arctic Circle, Pyrenees , Corsica, Tuscany, Scotland and Wales. In Ireland an Irish record by visiting one town in all 32 counties in less than 24 hours. This record was validated by the Guinness book of records. Over this period motorcycling has changed significantly in several areas. To mention a few:Clothing and Helmets, Motorcycle performance, Tyres, Complexity, and Road and traffic conditions. Two great developments in clothing have been the use of Gore-Tex which means you don’t need to get wet anymore and the

pin lock visors which eliminates condensation . Motorcycle performance has improved dramatically with increased power and handling . An example of a 1995 R100(1000cc) producing 50 BHP and today an R1200 (1200cc) producing 120 BHP. The shape, construction and

Bikecraft is based in Blarney and is owned and operated by Eddy O’Shea. Since December of 2010 the RSA has introduced a compulsory training course, IBT, for anybody who wishes to ride a motorcycle. This course takes 16 hours and is completed on a school bike and we provide all the safety and protective equipment which is required. On completion an IBT certificate is issued and this will enable you to get insurance at a reduced rate. The motorcycles used are Yamaha YBR125, Honda CBF250, Yamaha XJ600, and BMW F650GS. The larger bikes are factory restricted to 25 KW. If you are interested in riding a motorcycle there are 3 simple steps to follow:

Pass your theory test ......... www.theorytest.ie Purchase your Rider Permit ...........www.rsa.ie Call us at Bikecraft .............. www.bikecraft.ie We will arrange an appointment for your training at your convenience. We also provide training for students who are getting ready for their test. This course lasts approx 3 hours and a school bike is also available for the test. Advanced driving courses are available to students who wish to attain a higher level of competence and are interested in achieving a RoSPA standard.

material content in modern tubeless tyres have given extraordinary improvements in handling, reliability and safety. Life as a motorcyclist in 2011 has however become much more complex as a result of an increased number of road users and a lack of appropriate training over the last number of decades. Modern motorcycles also offer a significantly higher level of performance and capability in the right hands. The profile of the modern motorcyclist requires the development of the following skills: Observational advantage Ability to anticipate Optimal position on the road Excellence in Bike Control Dexterity and coordination skills Courtesy Maintenance of the motorcycle All of these skills and others can be learned during the course of a motorcycle training program. These are available at introductory, intermediate and advanced levels. Without these skills motorcyclists will remain exposed to dangers which can be avoided. The government has recently introduced IBT training for all motorcyclists who have purchased a licence since 6th Dec 2011.

This is a 16 hour training program which must be undertaken in order to make the licence legal and will also be required in order to purchase insurance. All training is provided by an approved ADI instructor and must be conducted on a school bike at an RSA approved training centre. All relevant information is available on the RSA web site and also on www.bikecraft.ie Reaction from students attending the IBT training program has been positive and gives significant advantage to anyone starting to ride a motorcycle. Students have varied in age from 16 to 60 and all of them have viewed IBT as a positive experience, indeed a number of them have decided to do some additional advanced training. An interesting comment from one of our students was as follows: “I guess motorcyclists are not stupid, there are just lots of things they just don’t know”. Training can teach people to develop standard methodologies and behaviours which will help significantly to improve motorcycle rider competence and allow you to enjoy riding your bike. Enjoy your biking and give me a wave as you see me out and about. Eddy.

Some more exciting news from the City Limits, Tommy Tiernan is shooting his new dvd at the City Limits Comedy Club this Summer, so be sure to get on the mailing list!! A new track from Beyonce's upcoming album 4 has hit the web. Party, which features Outkast wordsmith Andre Benjamin, AKA Andre 3000, on guest vocals is a low-key, moody number when compared to some Ms. Knowles' more recent and most famous work. The album has been produced by music mogul Kayne West and is due for release at the end of this month in the US and the tracks that have been revealed thus far have been received well by the diva's fans. No doubt Irish fans at Oxegen will be clamouring for some of Beyonce's new material too, but don't think for one second she'll abandon the tunes which everyone is there to see. Elsewhere, Plan B Told Label To "F*** Off" Over Jay-Z Duet, the recluse singer has revealed he declined the offer to work with with Jay-Z. The She Said hitmaker told press that his record label tried to set up a duet between himself and Jigga, with the hope that the hook-up could help him crack America, but he rejected their offer. Speaking to the tabloid about his potential collabo with Jay-Z, Plan B - real name Ben Drew - explained: "I was like, 'OK, but where we gonna put him?' "Obviously, he doesn't sing so they thought he could do my [rapping] bits and I was like, 'Nah, you can f**k off. No way. Not happening'." The 27-year old added: "It's no big deal but people aren't forcing

The location was again chosen this year because of it's access to a great range of watersports. The 2 night camping trip included surfing and body boarding on the beach, with huge waves due to the windy conditions. Many thanks to the fantasic instructors in the G-town Surf School in Garretstown for a great day. Some windy conditions on Saturday evening helped to prove that the cubs from Ballinlough are now well able to camp in all sorts of weather - though sunshine is still the preferred option!! Corinthian's Under 14 Premier are Local Cup Champions Corinthian Boys 5 Lakewood Ath. 1 Corinthian's Under 14 Premier captured the local cup in scintillating fashion last night as they turned in a superb team performance to defeat a gallant Lakewood side by 5-1. This was Corinthian's at their very best, playing some superb football from back to front and scoring some spectacular goals. Corinthian's opened brightly and went in front after three minutes when Alex O' Sullivan took advantage of some hesitancy in the Lakewood defense to score from close range. This early goal settled the team and they dominated the first half with some excellent passing and some

superb interplay. They doubled their advantage after seventeen minutes when Evan Galvinplayed a superb through ball for twin brother Corey to score from close range. It was Evan's turn to get on the scoresheet next when he converted a penalty following a foul by the Lakewood keeper. As the teams trooped off at half time it looked only a question of how many Corinthian's would win by as a clearly below par Lakewood were struggling badly. To their credit Lakewood came out in the second half a different team and were back in the contest five minutes into the second half when they scored following a

goalmouth scramble.Corinthian's were now the side under pressure as passes started going astray and for the next 15 minutes Lakewood were well on top. The next goal was going to be crucial and it went Corinthian's way when following a great run Corey Galvin lobbed the advancing keeper to make it 4-1. The game was now over as a contest and Alex O' Sullivan

added a fifth with a fabulous solo effort near the end. Congratulations to everyone involved with the team, the management team of Richie Kenny, Tony Noonan, Bill Daly and Pat Kearney, the squad of 17 players and the parents and families who have given so much to this team

Douglas GAA Senior Hurling: Next Saturday evening (11th June), Douglas will take on Blackrock in the senior hurling championship. This is a repeat of last years championship encounter and very little is likely to separate the sides. It promises to be a cracking contest and throw in at Páirc uí Chaoimh is scheduled for 7.30pm.

Douglas GAA Street Leagues:

As Douglas has grown from a small village to a thriving suburb during the past fifty years, Douglas Hurling & Football Club has been fortunate that many talented people have settled locally and offered their experiences to the club. This has produced a melting pot of diverse influences that has had a profound impact on the fortunes of the hurling and football teams at under-age and senior grades. For example, in recent years natives of Milford, Raheny, Skibbereen, Ballyhea and Fermoy have been instrumental in the nurturing of several successful Douglas teams. The Street Leagues has been the primary source of involvement for many parents who later became influential figures in the club and these contributions continue to be encouraged and embraced at all levels. The Douglas Hurling & Football Club Senior Committee extends sincere gratitude to the men and women who have volunteered their services throughout the 2011 Street Leagues season. Their efforts help to foster young children with a love of physical activity while communicating the spirit of sportsmanship within a fun environment where the skills of hurling and football are taught, friendships are forged and the traditions of the G.A.A. imparted. This years Street League finals will be held on Saturday 11th June. The customary parade around Douglas village will begin at 1pm and this will be followed by the finals at 2pm. The day’s celebrations will culminate with a medal ceremony and BBQ. A face painter and magician will also add to the festivities and ensure this is a great family day. The winners of the fantastic prizes in the super draw will also be revealed and proceeds of the draw will go directly to the continued development of the street leagues. 26 - Thur 09 Jun '11

Douglas Hall Underage by Finbarr Buckley Umbro U-12 Division Six Douglas Hall A 6; Riverstown A 2 The Hall opened the scoring with a superb long range strike from Diarmaid Burke, his first of four first half goals. Padraig Hickey and Kevin McCabe completed the scoring for the home team. There were excellent displays from Cathal Fanning, Paul Collins, Charlie Goff and goalkeeper Sean O'Doherty. Umbro U-12 Division Six Douglas Hall A 1; Avondale Utd. B 1 In the final game of the season, Douglas Hall needed a point to secure promotion to Division 5. The visitors were first to strike mid ways through the first half to lead at half time. In a nail-biting second half, an equalizer eluded the hosts until Padraig Hickey's strike two minutes from the end leveled the scores. Wild celebrations ensued at the final whistle! Congratulations to coaches Pat Hickey, Tom Ward, Tom O’Doherty & Noel McAuliffe, who wish to commend the players for their dedication and to parents for their cooperation throughout the season.

G.A.A. FOCUS Snippets from the Local and National Scene By Pat Harrington Cork vs. Tipperary My forecast that Tipperary would defeat Cork in the senior hurling championship was spot on. I was of the opinion that Cork would struggle big time. This was based on league performances and their inability to score goals. To be fair to the Leesiders they played very well and had the Premier County on the back foot and in serious trouble with five minutes remaining. The final score didn’t do justice to the overall Cork performance. What was the difference between the teams? It was Tipperary’s ability to score goals. Throughout the second half on a number of occasions Johnny Grimes stated the obvious when he said ‘Cork badly need a goal’. I seriously thought it might be our day when the points would see Cork through. The Echo man (I can’t recall his name) said we need Seánie O’Leary to make a comeback. Seánie played corner forward for Cork in the ‘70’s / ‘80’s and was known for his ability to score goals. There were two goal opportunities against Tipp; Brendan Cummins saved well from Paudie O’Sullivan and Pat Horgan shot wide from a good position. Cork didn’t create any goal chances after this. Some players struggled on the day but overall the Rebels were very competitive. Pa. Cronin was a major plus at midfield and Pat Horgan, O’Sullivan, Niall McCarthy and Ben O’Connor were hugely competitive. The experience will have done the younger players a world of good. It was somewhat baffling trying to figure out the reason for the management decision to take off Horgan and O’Sullivan, both very industrious players. So now it’s the scenic route. The next round against Offaly may not cause any major challenge. Let’s go with the majority of this team for a start, but one lesson to be learned is that our inside forwards must stay closer to goal. Too many balls dropped into Brendan Cummins’ hands from distance.

What of Tipperary? What of Tipperary? There is certainly more in them. The Premier County forwards were very good against Cork, though their defence was suspect and was dragged all over the place. They were lacking in discipline and this was reflected in the scores they conceded from frees. I heard a Tipp follower after the game make a comment inferring that they made hard work of it. Is this blue & gold arrogance or is it a new-found confidence? Admission Rates - Again It’s interesting to see the comments on admission prices to provincial championships. Connaught seems to be the most expensive at 30 euro, followed by Ulster at 27.50 euro. For the Cork vs. Clare football game it was 20 euro. As yet I do not know what the Leinster council were charging for a double header. The tickets for the Cork vs. Tipperary encounter cost 30 euro, 25 euro and 15 euro on the terrace. There were reduced prices for groups of 10 juveniles accompanied by adults – 5 euro per child and I understand the adult went free. A family ticker (2 adults and 2 children) 70 euro. The Leinster council ran an advert in one of the dailies offering a reduction of 5 euro per ticket for adult club groups. Such group may consist of a minimum of 15 tickets to a maximum of 50 tickets. A further offer for all Croke Park games in the Leinster championship allows one to sit with your adult group in the Davin stand for the price of a hill 16 ticket. A banner headline in the Irish Examiner recently stated ‘82,000 people forced to give up their health insurance’. This is a frightening statistic and indicative of the pressure the man in the street is under in his effort to prioritise his spending. The G.A.A. is telling us that ticket prices have not increased over the past five years. People’s income in that period, and consequently their disposable income has been drastically reduced, and the

punter is becoming more choosey as to what he / she spends their money on. I heard it mentioned that 80,000 people attended the concert in Slane; here you are talking about a younger person, one who does not have the same commitments as an older person. Let’s include group bookings – take for instance the ordinary punter with no club affiliation;

what is the G.A.A. doing for him / her. Soccer and rugby have been stung by falling attendances. The Ireland vs. N. Ireland soccer international, 15,000 and the rugby autumn internationals had reduced numbers as well. To the G.A.A. I say lets not be greedy – with the competition we’ve got from other sports why shoot ourselves in the foot?

St.Michael’s G.F.C. Well done to all of our runners in the Cork City Marathon on Monday last.Well done also to everyone who supported and sponsored them for this event. PIGEON NEWS by Mark Henry Bill Wallace again flew his birds to new records since we last reported. In the Monaghan Race 2 weeks ago Bill won 1st and 4th in the club section Southern Flying on the Bandon Road. Also in the same race Bill won 1st and took 4th in the Cork Federation (all clubs in Cork County). But to top the weekend off, Bill also flew birds in a race from Senne Cove in Wales and subject to verification was the 1st bird home in the National (birds from all 26 Counties), also first Cork bird (Federation) and also 1st in his Club Southern Flying Bandon Road. I asked Bill what was the secret to his success and his answer - "good breeding, good management and loads of luck". I think Bill is being modest when he mentions loads of luck because he is also enjoying one of the highest return rates of birds back from races. Next week we are going over to the North Side of the city to meet Mark Hegarty, another well established pigeon keeper who flies with the Northern and we will be looking at the Tumbler Pigeon, famous for doing full 360 degree flips in the air and having feathers on their feet. While we will also look into the cost of starting up a small garden loft for breeding and having your birds around the garden.

Do Not Open the door 2. Use door chain. 3.Show the card to caller 4. Do not enter into converstaion with them. 5. Genuine callers will leave their details with you (as requested on the card that you have given them). This is a fantastic neighborhood watch initiative organised by our local Gardai. DANIEL O’DONNELL The Donegal crooner is back on his Irish Summer Tour and swings by Cork to again delight his local fans. Daniel has sold millions of his recordings worldwide and is the only artist in the world to claim at least one hit album every year since 1988, earning him a place in the Guinness World Records. He has played some of the most iconic venues in the world including London’s Royal Albert Hall, New York’s Carnegie Hall, and Sydney’s

It’s time for Douglas to dust off those stone washed 501’s, bowie suits and leg warmers because “the time that fashion forgot” the 80’s is back with a vengeance and Live at the Marquee this June 15th. Erasure are coming to play their first Leeside gig, and I, for one can’t wait. The eccentric duo of vocalist Andy Bell and keyboardist Vince Clarke have been on the road for over 25 years and are ready to belt out the hits including “sometimes”, “A Little Respect”, “Chains of Love” and “Always” to name but a few. Erasure are still going strong and have a brand new studio album planned for release in summer 2011. The Cork gig is part of their world tour which also takes in Florida, Santiago, Hamburg, Berlin, London, Copenhagen and Russia. With 80’s music back in vogue, these boys epitomize the pop music of that era and now is a great time to catch Erasure live, and it’s on our doorstep.

famous Opera House. Daniel is looking forward to his Cork gig where he will perform hits from his newly released his album ‘Moon Over Ireland’, as well as all the old favorites. Be sure not to miss this unique experience.

Returning to Cork for the fifth year in a row, The Fureys come to the Cork Opera House on July 3rd and will perform all their hits including When You Were Sweet 16, The Green Fields
