With a host of events from parades to beauty contests, exhibitions to a fashion show, this year’s Festival has added five touring cycles to what is a truly packed programme. The new cycles are aimed at tourists as well as cyclists who may view their bikes as an essential A-to-B device, but rarely take the opportunity to ride them for pleasure. Choosing routes that avoid traffic and steep hills and make the most of natural scenery and places of interest, festival organisers will steward the ride to make sure that cyclists are safe and that no one gets lost or left behind! Touring cycle details: - MONDAY 18 JULY: 10am-5pm, leaving from Princes Street Church Long Touring Cycle to Barryscourt Castle and Cobh -TUESDAY 19 JULY: 11am-3pm, leaving from Princes Street Church Short Touring Cycle to Blarney A short cycle to Blarney and surrounding countryside. -WEDNESDAY 20 JULY: 10am-5pm, leaving from Princes Street Church Long Scenic Cycle to Mullinhassig Riverside cycling, castle views and a route through forest to a hidden waterfall – bring your swimming gear! -THURSDAY 21 JULY: 7-9pm An Oige Cycles These 2 regular cycles will welcome festival visitors – long cycle (around the Owenabue valley) leaves at 7pm sharp; social cycle around Cork harbour) leaves at 7.10pm. Park & Ride The car park I use for work is huge: it is easily the size of a football pitch yet every morning it fills up quickly. The parking spaces are laid out to squeeze in as many cars as possible but it is a challenge to get in or out of your car once parked. Ken, the car park attendant takes his job seriously. The shuttle bus may be about to leave but you are not going anywhere until Ken has bossed you into realigning your car to within a hair's breadth of where you first pulled in. Frustrating and petty it may seem it does however, ensure that no one hogs more than their fair share and that, no matter how late you arrive there is always a spot left for you.

Cork South Central’s Jerry Buttimer, TD, said “funding to City of Cork VEC will ensure the continuation of youth projects which are vital to our young people. “As part of the funding €1,183,822 will go towards supporting Special Youth Projects which provide support and facilitate the development of those taking part in the schemes. The Ogra Chorcaí Bishopstown Special Project and Togher Youth Development Centre will both receive more than €100,000. The Mahon Youth Development Project which is run by Foróige to support vulnerable young people will receive €115,000. “The Young People’s Facilities and Services Fund, which aims to tackle drug misuse with the provision of recreational and sport facilities and services, will be supported by €717,463 in the 2011 funding allocations. Some of the local projects that will benefit will from the support of this Fund include BIshopstown Outreach Project, Ballyphehane Action for Youth and Togher Family Centre Limited. “The YMCA’s Youth Information Centre is to receive €88,886 which will enable it to continue to provide young people with access to information on their rights, health and welfare. “The services provided by youth organisations are crucial to our community, we must provide young people with recreational facilities and support services that will allow them to overcome the challenges they face. This round of funding will ensure that the young people of Cork have access to services which will help them play an active role in society. It is also recognition of the quality of services that are provided by organisations such as Ogra Chorcaí and Foróige.”

As they argued back and forth, Ken became more and more agitated until finally, dancing with indignation on the balls of his feet, he demanded to see her identification. The woman replied airily that she didn't have it that morning. She then got out of her car and as she walked away, she called back, "If you had a real job, you would be a teacher." I stood there stunned. "Curses on her," shouted Ken, "I pity the man that's married to her!" Then this week he told me that a couple had been seen 'being amorous' in a yellow car on Friday evening. "Could you believe it? Carrying on like that? At 5 o'clock in broad daylight!" It happened after his shift but that didn't stop him spluttering his disbelief. He then winked at me and grinning mischievously said, "It puts a whole new meaning into Park and Ride!"

On my second day using the car park, I returned at lunch time to find Ken walking purposefully towards me. "Is that your silver Ford Ka in the corner?" I was impressed and cheerfully told that it was indeed mine. He sighed and said, "You left your head lights on all morning." With a heavy heart I tried to start the car but it was dead. "Hang on there," said Ken. A minute later he brought around his Ford Fiesta and using his set of jump leads he had me going again in twenty minutes. After that, despite his prickly manner and fussy ways I was a firm fan. I assumed his job was a doddle for a man of his senior years but he tells me that he has met the worst of humankind in this car park and every morning he fills me in on the lunatics that he has to deal with. It ranges from the gormless, "That fellah is so lazy he'd leave his car anywhere and thinks it will park itself" to the downright rude. One morning last week, I stopped to have my usual two minute chat with him. It being summertime, the demand for the cark park was low and there were oceans of spaces to choose from. A Ford Focus came swirling in the gate. Ken pointed to a spot at the end of a row. The driver ignored his instruction and chose to park right behind us. The driver's window was open. Ken called out to the woman driver, "You like that spot,

KNOCK PILGRIMMAGE BOOKED OUT The annual Carrigaline Pilgrimage to Knock is completely booked out. The bus leaves the Bandroom at 9.30 am on this Saturday morning 16th July. It was only when he pushed the button that the man began to bellow with rage. Why ?

Carrigaline Community News DAMHSA FEST CONCERT The opening concert of this year’s Damhsa Fest takes place in the Carrigaline Court Hotel on Wednesday 20th July at 8.00pm. Insect bites and stings Signs and symptoms of an insect bite result from the injection of venom or other substances into your skin. The venom sometimes triggers an allergic reaction. The severity of your reaction depends on your sensitivity to the insect venom or substance and whether you've been stung or bitten more than once. Most reactions to insect bites are mild, causing little more than an annoying itching or stinging sensation and mild swelling that disappear within a day or so. A delayed reaction may cause fever, hives, painful joints and swollen glands. You might experience both the immediate and the delayed reactions from the same insect bite or sting. Only a small percentage of people develop severe reactions (anaphylaxis) to insect venom. Signs and symptoms of a severe reaction include: Nausea Facial swelling Difficulty breathing Abdominal pain Deterioration of blood pressure and circulation (shock) Bites from bees, wasps, hornets etc. are How do I handle mum’s Alzheimer’s?

See your doctor promptly if you experience any of these signs and symptoms. For severe reactions Severe reactions may progress rapidly. Call 999 for emergency medical assistance if the following signs or symptoms occur: • Difficulty breathing • Swelling of the lips or throat

• Faintness • Dizziness • Confusion • Rapid heartbeat Take these actions immediately while waiting with an affected person for medical help: Check for medications that the person might be carrying to treat an allergic attack, such as an auto-injector of epinephrine (for example, EpiPen). Administer the drug as directed. Have the person take an antihistamine pill if he or she is able to do so without choking. Do this after administering epinephrine. Have the person lie still on his or her back with feet higher than the head. Loosen tight clothing and cover the person with a blanket. Don't give anything to drink. Turn the person on his or her side to prevent choking if there's vomiting or bleeding from the mouth. Begin CPR if there are no signs of circulation, such as breathing, coughing or movement. If your doctor has prescribed an autoinjector of epinephrine, read the instructions before a problem develops and also have your household members read them. Ghost housing estates in Cork a worry – ICSA The Cork branch of the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers’ Association (ICSA) has expressed its worry at the growth in vacant housing estates in the county. The ICSA is calling for a definitive strategic policy to tackle this issue. According to the preliminary set of figures from the 2011 census released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) it shows that Cork county has one of the highest rate in the country for vacant dwellings. Approximately 17% of houses in Cork are marked as being vacant with the majority of those dwellings making up “ghost” housing estates. Dermot Kelleher, Macroom farmer and Cork ICSA member, said: “This is indeed very worrying and something needs to be done as a matter of urgency to solve this problem. Galway has one the highest rate of vacant dwellings in the country since the 2006 census and this has been mainly due to

greedy developers attempting to make profits on the back of our county. Subsequently we have been left with vacant, sometimes half finished housing estates, which are not only an eyesore on the landscape but are also a financial burden on the State. There is also the whole issue of single built houses that are left idle along the side of a road or are half finished as people cannot obtain a mortgage. This is a significant issue for rural Ireland and for rural Cork. “A number of weeks ago Minister for State Willie Penrose announced a budget of over €1million to help clean up these estates and, in some instances, finish them altogether but this is only a stop gap. There needs to be a definitive plan to tackle the issue. Housing in Cork is affordable presently and it’s a fine county to live in so we shouldn’t have this issue. We are calling on the Government to address this issue and it’s a major issue in the county.”

As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower Garden Start thinking about ordering springflowering bulbs. Lift tulips once foliage has died down, and dry off the bulbs. Sow hardy annuals for autumn colour, in a nursery bed or cold frame. Start taking semi-ripe cuttings of shrubs and root in a cold frame. Watch out for black spot and mildew on roses, and spray promptly with fungicide. Start feeding hanging baskets and other containers 6 weeks after planting.

Kitchen Garden Sow oriental brassicas direct or in a nursery bed. Make a last sowing of a small early carrot variety. Summer prune cherries and plums. Prop up laden plum branches to prevent breakage. Cut dill, fennel and coriander seed heads as they turn colour, and hang up in paper bags to dry.

In that time, hundreds of music makers have had the opportunity to showcase their talents to thousands of music lovers. The IMRO Showcase Tour has borne many successes and fostered a multitude of friendships and collaborations. Commencing in September, the IMRO Showcase Tour will hit the road for the twentieth time taking in Belfast, Derry, Dublin, Cork, Mayo, Galway, Kildare and Limerick. The annual ‘End of Tour Showcase’ will take on a new vibe this year and in mid October, Dublin’s celebrated new live music venue The Workman’s Club will play host to a day-long celebration of many of the acts who performed on the 2011 IMRO Showcase Tour. There will also be an educational aspect to the day and a number of shows will be open to music fans of all ages. This acclaimed production was produced by Cork Operatic Society in 2010 to breath-taking reviews, standing ovations and full houses. The Cork Operatic Society was established in 2009 by a group of committed young opera singers who had previously been members of Opera 2005, and who sought to maintain the presence of opera in Cork after the Arts Council of Ireland withdrew its grant to them in 2008. One of the greatest and most dramatic musicals of the twentieth century, Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, is based on the book by Hugh Wheeler. With music and lyrics by the legendary Stephen Sondheim, it was first produced on Broadway in March 1979 and garnered 8 Tony awards. Tragedy, romance and madness intersect through ravishing music, passion beyond all measure and one of the closest shaves imaginable! It was Tim Burton who made a film adaptation of the Tony Award winning musical in 2007 giving it the wide audience it has today. Starring Johnny Depp as Sweeney Todd and Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs Lovett the film won a number of awards, including the Golden Globe Awards for Best Motion Picture and Best Actor, and the Academy Award for Best Art Direction.
