Obituary June-Morris –Barry, Douglas –Tenerife The untimely death of June, daughter of the late Hannah and Dick Morris of Douglas West, has occurred at her home in Tenerife on 18th August 2011. June is survived by her husband Ted and children Alexander, Colin and Cian. The eldest of six June led the way for brothers; Des, twins Declan & Greg, Nolie and Valerie. Sadly missed by her family, especially Colin’s partner Katherine who cared so well for her. June has left behind, not alone in Douglas but in the Canary Islands and Boston where she lived and worked in the seventies, an enormous number of friends, especially in Teneriffe where she owned an Irish Pub and the gossip she extracted from visitors would have made her a super social column writer, a thought expressed by her childhood friend Jane Kidney (nee Deacon) May she Rest in Peace (Kevin O’Sullivan)

Minister and City Manager must act on Report to Reduce Future Flood Damage Risk Cork South Central Fine Gael TD Jerry Buttimer has called for the Manager of Cork City Council and the Minister for the Environment to respond to and implement the recommendations of the report on the Review of the Response to Exceptional Severe Weather Events of 2009 – 2010. Deputy Buttimer said “I have asked the Manager of Cork City Council and the Minister for the Environment to publicly respond to the report and confirm that they are putting in place the recommendations made. “The Report sets out a detailed review of the response to the serious flooding and severe weather conditions in 2009/2010. It highlights that the responses to the weather conditions were ad hoc and the sharing of information was insufficient due to the disjointed relationship between the various organisations involved. It also exposes the vulnerability of our salt supplies which could be impeded by political disruption in the countries from whom we buy salt. “The flood warnings were too general and did not sufficiently alert the people at risk, they were not made aware of reality of what was coming. It says that one of the reasons for this was a disjoint between the meteorological and the hydrological system information. “It is very much welcomed that the response of the staff of Cork City Council has been recognised and praised in the report. When they were most needed those working for the council went beyond the call of duty to help those most severely affected by the floods. “The agencies mentioned in the report, the Department of the Environment, Met Éireann, ESB, Cork City Council and others, must now take action to ensure that the recommendations are implemented. “The feasibility of a flood forecasting system for the River Lee should be immediately examined. Cork City Council must confirm that it has implemented a flood emergency plan, and also whether or not it has agreed interim protocols with ESB, OPW and EPA to access hydrological information which will form the basis for flood forecasting.” Deputy Buttimer concluded by saying “agencies involved at all stages of the emergency management cycle must ensure sufficient cooperation so that future responses to severe weather conditions are not disjointed and are more than merely ‘adequate’.”

A Tiny Handful of Promise By Norris Burkes It was 3 a.m. when the doctors flooded her room with light. Still numb from pain medication, the new mom fumbled for her glasses, squinting to distinguish the blur of white coats. The doctors were saying something about needing some papers signed—now. Twenty miles and twenty minutes away, a high-pitched beep suddenly filled my dark bedroom. Numb from the early hour, I fumbled for my glasses too so I could read the number on my pager. Still groggy, I managed to get dressed while placing a whispered phone call to the maternity ward. "Chaplain, we have a baby who's not doing well," the nurse reported. "The parents are asking for you to please come." Maternity wards are the happiest places on earth—except when they are the saddest places on earth. The contrast in patient stories on the floor can be jagged and capricious. Even as I enter a room of sobbing parents, I often will glance over my shoulder to see other families happily backslapping each other with congratulatory pats. As I stepped to the bedside, the couple told me of their journey through a problem pregnancy filled with frightening neonatal reports. Concerned doctors were seeking parental consent for a birth-day surgery. "Has God just teased us?" the parents wondered aloud. Would it help to baptize the baby? Can you baptize

I asked the mother if she might have the strength to come with me to the neonatal intensive care unit (the NICU, which staffers pronounce "nick-u"). In close quarters, the doctors, nurses, and respiratory therapists squeeze through tangled tubes to deliver highly specialized health care to the tiniest people you'll ever see. As we encircled the baby, the usually noisy NICU fell silent in readiness for this "emergency blessing." Mom stood beside her tiny daughter, stroking the baby with her index finger in an attempt to re-establish the sustaining love of the umbilical cord. Her finger seemed just long enough to maintain a fragile connection between her and this baby of faith. It was an image reminiscent of the fingertip touch between God and Adam in Michelangelo's painting in the Sistine Chapel. In the E.T. movie, special-effects artisans attempted to recreate the scene using an extraterrestrial with a flashlight finger to deliver a healing touch to a child, but Hollywood could never paint this scene. With the touch of a single finger, Mom was sharing the hopes and prayers of a family.

Unceremoniously opening a bottle of sterile water, I placed a drop on the baby's forehead and asked that God "bless this child in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit." With that, Mom's whimpers melted into weeping. And as she cried, she took her daughter's tiny hand and, finding a spot that wasn't wrapped, poked, or monitored, she placed a kiss in that tiny palm and whispered something into those little, curled-up fingers. Then, as if she had placed a thing of priceless value in her daughter's grip for safekeeping, she closed it tight. This mother's love reminded me of the miraculous way in which God whispers his love into the hand of each of us when we are born, placing there

a promise that, no matter what, he will never let us go. (Romans 8:38–39 KJV). Even as a minister, I sometimes forget how personal and deep God's love is for each of us. I often talk about the depth of God's love, but it took a mother's heartfelt whisper into a tiny hand to remind me that God is always there to love me, and all I need to do is reach out and accept it. I'll never know the exact words this young mother entrusted to her daughter's grip. But in the coming weeks of miraculous procedures and risky surgeries, the real miracle that was witnessed by all who would see it was how this little girl never released the grip of her mother's promise. Three months after her birth, she went home a healthy little girl.

My dog’s coughing – doesn’t mean its all over! We have seen a big increase in the number of dogs presenting at the clinic with upper respiratory symptoms ranging from a very bad cough to conjunctivitis. The cause of infectious bronchitis is an airborne bacteria which is very contagious. If one dog in a multi pet household gets it, all the other dogs will invariably fall ill. Indeed most dogs in the park or the street will become ill. I think the strain of bacteria – bordetella bronchiseptica has become more virulent as in the past only dogs in kennels, be it on holidays or packs of foxhounds or greyhounds establishments were really susceptible. A more virulent strain of the disease coupled with a huge increase in the movement of animals – animals competing internationally is now quite common, at dog shows, greyhound tracks, hunting, trials or exhibitions. Dog lovers all end up on the same favourite walks, the line from Pairc Ui Chaoimh to Monkstown and behind Blackrock Castle is very popular and so, apart from the scourge of broken glass, keeping your dog safe from infection is not easy. I am now recommending to all my clients to vaccinate against infectious bronchitis, not only to fulfil the requirements of going to boarding kennels but to keep their dog free form this illness for the year. Infectious bronchitis is quite treatable, but it is both cheaper and better for your dog’s well being to avoid it in the first place. The vaccine last for one year so it is easiest to give it along with the annual vaccinations. Not only is your dog protected for a year but he can also be put into boarding kennels at short notice without needing a special visit to the clinic to add the kennel cough vaccine to his annual boosters. As this marks a change in policy for the clinic we are offering all our clients a 20% reduction to get their dogs kennel cough vaccine update before the winter. Carrigaline Community News ACTIVE RETIRED The Carrigaline Active Retirement Association plans to be back in full swing after the summer break on Thursday 8th September. During the break they got many enquiries about the new Outdoor Gymn, which they erected in the town park. A group from the north side of Cork City called to see the new facility. They were met by CARA members and treated to a cup of tea in the Carrigaline Court Hotel. Cork County Council were very impressed with the Outdoor Gym and see possibilities of replicating it in other towns. An Active Retirement group from Carrigaline are going by coach for a four day break to Castlebar from 26th to 29th September anyone else interested contact Noreen Lawlor 087 130 1122. CARRIGALINE GOSPEL CHOIR RECHARGED AND READY TO GO. After a great relaxing summer break members of the Carrigaline Gospel Choir are recharged and ready to go back to practice. Helena Crowley Hayes of Cork ‘Come dine with me’ fame dessert gets a ‘Bakeover’ at Midleton Food and Drink Festival Helena Crowley Hayes with the help of Arun Kapil from Green Saffron Spices prepares to cook her dessert for the Midleton Food and Drink Festival on Saturday 10th September 2011. Helena is determined to get it right this time and she will, with the help of an extra pair of hands (and spicy tips) from Arun Kapil. Helena says “I am delighted to have the chance to cook for the visitors of the Midleton Food and Drink Festival. With Arun’s help I know my dessert will have a great ‘bakeover’ and will fabulous this time!” Now in its eighth year, The Midleton Food and Drink Festival is a true feast for the senses, showcasing an extensive collection of culinary delights from Midleton and surrounding areas. There are over 60 different food stalls to whet your appetite,

including the famous Ballymaloe Country Relish, The Granary Foodstore and Cafe, Cuthbert’s Handmade Bread and of course Green Saffron Spices. This year the festival features a jam packed Food and Drink demonstration programme, with complimentary food and drink tastings, is a limited free ticketed event. YouTube top 100 It’s the biggest destination for music on the internet and YouTube has finally recognised that fact with the launch of a dedicated music section. The revamped youtube.com/music now shows you recommended videos and artists based on existing videos you are watching, a list of upcoming local concerts using Songkick gig data and the most relevant music chart of all, a YouTube top 100 for the week highlighting the songs that are being watched globally (Nicki Minaj’s Super Bass currently sits on top). One video sitting high in the YouTube chart is Kanye West and Jay-Z’s Otis from the Watch The Throne album. The album broke the iTunes one-week sales record with 290,000 downloads in a week. Yeezy and Hova decided to release the album via iTunes only in digital format first. Only after the album debuted on August 8 was the album sent to the manufacturing process, removing

Athlete's foot Athlete's foot is a fungal infection that develops in the moist areas between your toes and sometimes on other parts of your foot. Athlete's foot usually causes itching, stinging and burning. Also called tinea pedis, athlete's foot is closely related to other fungal infections with similar names, which include: Ringworm of the body (tinea corporis). This form causes a red, scaly ring or circle of rash on the top layer of your skin. Jock itch (tinea cruris). This form affects your genitals, inner upper thighs and buttocks. Ringworm of the scalp (tinea capitis). This form is most common in children and involves red, itchy patches on the scalp, leaving bald patches. Symptoms The signs and symptoms of athlete's foot can be numerous, although you probably won't have all of them: Itching, stinging and burning between your toes

ease the symptoms if infection occurs: Keep your feet dry, especially between your toes. Go barefoot to let your feet air out as much as possible when you're home. Go with natural materials. Wear socks that are made of natural material, such as cotton or wool, or a synthetic fiber designed to draw moisture away from your feet. Change socks and stockings regularly. If your feet sweat a lot, change your socks twice a day. Wear light, well-ventilated shoes. Avoid shoes made of synthetic material, such as vinyl or rubber. Alternate pairs of shoes. This allows time for your shoes to dry. Protect your feet in public places. Wear waterproof sandals or shower shoes in communal showers, pools, fitness centers and other public areas. For older people heat is as important as food, it is a real life and death issue. Older peoples needs are not greater than other sections of the community, but they are different. All people need to heat their homes, but older people need more energy and heat, and the greater their vulnerability (due to poor health, living alone, living on low fixed incomes) the greater the issue becomes. Joan Burton announced 65 million in savings due to cuts in fuel allowances, ESB and gas allocations and telephone allowances. The smokeless fuel payment has been abolished and the phone allowance cut, but the greatest damage is likely to be done by the decision to cut free electricity and gas units by up to 25%. After the bad winter we experienced last year it is very worrying that the government still decided to cut these vital supports. Surely they are aware of the suffering already experienced by some older people to keep themselves heated to a safe level each winter. Ireland has a winter death rate of up to 2000 people most of them elderly, who die of cold related illness so "please minister remember behind those figures there are real people". Well done to Cllr Kieran McCarthy on his informative talk on the history of Douglas. He touched on the history of the Mills also the history behind the "big houses" such as Westgrove, Ballybrack and many more. His knowledge and passion for Cork is inspiring. Thanks to all who contacted me offering to visit our local nursing homes for card games with the

residents who enjoy such a simple pass time, it is great that there are people willing to help others less fortunate than themselves and also to help build up community spirit. Looking at the information board about the railway, the picture of the steam train triggered a very old memory. I would have been very young, no more than four or I would have been at school, so I am talking about 1948. I know it was a week day because I can remember my father going to work just before my mother and I set out for the local tube station. I also remember being very excited and giddy on the tube. My mother at one stage called me by my full name, always a sign of imminent wrath, to settle me down. We changed lines which was unusual because if I went with my mother into London on a shopping trip we would go straight to Oxford St on the Central Line. The next big memory is the main line terminus. I can remember the echoing noise under the arched roofs and the bustling crowds. I don’t suppose I had ever seen so many people in one place at one time. There were porters pushing

trolleys of baggage and parcels, ticket inspectors at the gates and we walked down this long train to look at the huge engine that smelt of coal smoke and steam and hissed to itself. Boarding the train, my mother chose seats for us with our backs to the engine which she said was safer When we were on the embankments I could see across the farmland, with cattle grazing and farm houses half hidden by trees. I don’t remember why we went to where ever it was that we went and I don’t remember coming home but the rest is a string of vivid pictures and impressions. I notice yahoos, either resident or not, have broken four of the lights along the line just close to the ponds. They need mending. Apart from the resulting hideous appearance of the areas sprayed and the chemical reek that comes from them, there is the harm done to small wildlife.

College Corinthians AFC It was a hectic weekend of action, which saw our two adult teams making their seasonal debuts and eleven of our schoolboy teams also playing their first games of the season.

Schoolboys Section

Corinthian Boys B 1 Avondale Utd. A 1 A truly superb performance from the boys and they can count themselves extremely unlucky not to have collected all three points against an Avondale side that had beaten them comprehensively last season. From the outset the boys had all of the play with keeper Eric Hyland not touching the ball in the first half. Dylan Virgo went close when he struck a fierce shot just over after 15 minutes and again just before the break. Liam O’Sullivan was also looking menacing up front and Avondale were lucky to go into the break all square. The boys continued to set the pace in the second half and it wasn’t long before they took the lead, a cross into the box was flicked on and O’Sullivan slotted home to give the boys a well-deserved lead. Moments later he was through again only to see his effort just pass outside the post having beaten the keeper. Avondale’s sole opportunity came against the run of play with ten minutes remaining and the striker made no mistake finishing high into the net over Hyland. Daniel Hurley, Joe Cremen and Luke Schum went close for the boys near the end but unfortunately they were unable to capitalise on all of the great play. Brendan Powter, Conor Nash and Paul Barry also played well for the boys in what was a great all-round squad performance.

For coaching purposes they are split into small sized groups (average ten per group) where they are given plenty of opportunity to participate and enjoy themselves. Later in the year, our Under Six and Under Seven Street Leagues take centre stage and they are always the highlight of the Underage season in Corinthians, the games are fun filled with the emphasis very much on enjoyment. Snippets from the Local and National Scene By Pat Harrington The Mighty Kingdom Kerry, the aristocrats of football have reached their eighth senior final in ten years. The only real challenge on this year’s journey was in the second half of the Munster final against Cork. They were never really pushed by any of their opponents in their other encounters. The footpassing by Kerry can totally unhinge opposing defences, such is their skill. On one hand they have not clicked as a unit, and as they have not being seriously tested this could prove their undoing. Recognising their undoubted tradition they will fancy themselves in the final.

Re-emergence of J.B.M. At this point in time it seems likely that Jimmy Barry Murphy is the chosen new manager of the Cork hurling squad. I would favour bringing in a coach and allow Jimmy to manage. For openers he will have to change the mindset of the players. It may turn out that some of the older players may have to be dispensed with. Their influence on the style of hurling played

Féile This next subject, one that is very close to my heart will probably stir up a fair bit of discussion and possibly argument in some quarters. The Féile came into being in 1971. Initially the competition was for under 15 hurlers and footballers; this was subsequently changed to under 14. The preparation for the competition would begin months in advance of the start date and it would be every boy’s dream to be part of the Féile panel. To represent ones county in the Féile is indeed a great honour. Travelling to another county for the Féile stirs up fantastic excitement. Staying with host families and mingling with players from other counties brings with it a great buzz. Of course there are pros and cons attached to every scenario and the Féile is no exception. I would consider the downside to the competition to be the fact that by its nature it is for the elite players. Players who would normally merit a place on an under 14 club side may well be left on the line in favour of

Ice Baths & Training Camps Some clubs go over the top with their preparations. This year’s all-Ireland champions went to a training camp in Portugal. I can recall a few years ago a Dublin club requesting ice baths from a club in Cork. A Limerick club brought along a dietician and a doctor to the hurling Féile. The cost factor has gone way over the top, commanding a figure of 16,000 euro – 20,000 euro. There is fierce effort and time expended in the build-up. Could not some of this money and energy be channelled into ensuring that these young players are still involved in our games at the age of 16 and upwards? The pros and cons are now before you the reader. Do you think it’s a case of the Féile being the be all and end all or would it be more preferable to see greater effort made to ensure that these lads will be playing into adulthood?
