Letters to the Editor

North Link COMMUNITY NEWS

frontdesk@douglaspost.ie

We’d love to hear from you. If you have any news, views or issues you’d like to see covered, write to the Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas West, Cork or by e-mail to frontdesk@douglaspost.ie Please include your name and address and a contact number. Letters may be edited due to space considerations.

Shawlies Return! Dear Editor, Please allow me space to make a suggestion. I think there should be a renewed effort to bring back the Shawlies with the new return of stalls in the Cork. After all, they were part of our past history and tourism. I’m sure the siblings of those still have shawls today and it’s only in Cork. We would certainly support them on their return, and it would bring part time work for people in these poor economic times. How about it, Corkonians? Cheers, Joe Brown Blackrock.

Coillte and Hunters Dear Editor, Ireland's forestry board is set to sacrifice thousands of defenceless creatures in a callous bid to boost its profits. Coillte is currently selling licences which

will allow hunters to destroy life in forests all over the country. Not only will woodland wildlife be killed but also creatures that Coillte is inviting hunters to introduce into the forests to use as targets. Coillte is owned by the Irish people and this contamination of profits with blood money is surely unacceptable to the merciful majority. The deer, foxes and birds that make a visit to a forest so priceless for so many should be allowed to live free from persecution. Ironically, on its website, Coillte urges visitors to forests to "respect wildlife" and "avoid disturbing animals and birds". Everyone who values life over death should urgently demand that Coillte (Tel: 01-201 1111) practises what it preaches and keeps the hunters out. Thank you. Yours sincerely, Philip Kiernan Irish Council Against Blood Sports www.banbloodsports.com

Family Ties Irene Warren by Eileen Mitchell

Getting Elvis to Trust Me I’d been toying with the idea for years: getting a dog, that is. But I had doubts, thanks to the long work hours I keep coupled with a tiny condo. Neither would be fair to Fido, I reasoned. Talking with people from rescue groups. Doing a little research. A little reading. A lot of longing. And one dog kept coming to the forefront. The dog that likes to sleep all day and thrives in small quarters. The dog that doesn't bark, hardly sheds and is smart, sweet, and affectionate. The dog known as the 40-mile-per hour couch potato. The dog, it seems, was destined for me: the ex-racer Greyhound. And that's how I got Elvis. During his racing days, the fawncoloured hound lived most of his life inside a crate, sometimes up to 22 hours at a time, and often lacked personal attention. At that time the bonding would begin and his true personality would shine forth. For the first couple weeks all Elvis did was sleep inside the temporary crate set up in my living room. Eventually, however, he learned that the brushed velvet donut pillow lying in the pool of sunshine under the picture window was far more comfortable. He also discovered that life outside the crate featured numerous squeaky toys, the occasional doggie treat and a human who loved giving belly rubs. Elvis began greeting me at the front door every day, jumping up and down when I returned from work. He started nuzzling me when I brushed his hair and dropping his favourite stuffed animal at my feet while I watched

TV. He started going everywhere with me; parks, parades, friend’s houses and dog-friendly stores and neighbourhood coffee shops. Everywhere except upstairs. I attached his leash and tried walking him up the stairs. I begged, I pleaded, I used my stern human voice, but Elvis would have nothing to do with stairs, uh uh, no way. Even if it meant being separated from his human. Steps weren't his only idiosyncrasy. We were walking one summer evening when he suddenly started limping and biting at his front paw. A thistle had lodged between his pads. Repeated attempts to touch his paw resulted in the same reaction. When we saw Dr. Bradley the next day, she asked if I'd been walking Elvis on hot asphalt. I explained that Elvis was an ex-racer and had just been adopted a couple months ago. She shook her head knowingly. "Poor baby. His pads are still raw from racing." Elvis was now quite secure, happily traipsing around the first floor like he had lived there forever. Because during winter walks, how would I ever wipe mud from his paws? Subsequent attempts to touch his paws, however gentle, were met with the same adverse reaction. I realized that like the steps, paws were forbidden territory. I was prepared, albeit reluctantly, to deal with muddy paw prints on the hardwood floors downstairs. I was stunned and moved when this time, after hesitating, he allowed me to lift each paw, never wincing as I gently wiped the mud. Leaping out of bed, I opened my bedroom door and found, to my surprise and delight, Elvis on the landing. Mud-free paws and all.

Our poem this week comes from Michael J.Roche Jnr.of Rensselaer, in upstate New York . Michael can trace his roots back to West Cork, where he likes to visit from time to time. On one occasion when he and his wife were in Birr Co. Offaly, he noticed a man whom, at first glance appeared to be his late father. This was the inspiration for his poem. The thought expressed in Michael’s excellent poem will strike a chord in all of us. It is probably better explained by reading it. Michael has written quite a number of poems and is currently compiling a book. He a Distinguished Member of the International Society of Poets. Ghosts in the Streets Ghosts move in these streets Ireland is full of them A man the image of my dad passed me this day And my father over twenty years dead At every turn they appear Dear dead uncles and aunts Friends of many years as well Their children and their children’s’ children The living I know, the dead I knew, those yet to be They move about in other roles On this distant, different stage Not quite who they are or were Given over to another script Perhaps they did not leave at all Perhaps I am the specter He who might have been They may see me as such If they see me at all If I stop the man who is the image of my father Will he be offended Will he change before me Will he disappear Will I disappear I will watch him pass, noting the semblance Ghosts move in these streets Ireland is full of them Michael J. Minister and City Manager must act on Report to Reduce Future Flood Damage Risk Cork South Central Fine Gael TD Jerry Buttimer has called for the Manager of Cork City Council and the Minister for the Environment to respond to and implement the recommendations of the report on the Review of the Response to Exceptional Severe Weather Events of 2009 – 2010. Deputy Buttimer said “I have asked the Manager of Cork City Council and the Minister for the Environment to publicly respond to the report and confirm that they are putting in place the recommendations made. “The Report sets out a detailed review of the response to the serious flooding and severe weather conditions in 2009/2010. It highlights that the responses to the weather conditions were ad hoc and the sharing of information was insufficient due to the disjointed relationship between the various organisations involved. It also exposes the vulnerability of our salt supplies which could be impeded by political disruption in the countries from whom we buy salt. “The flood warnings were too general and did not sufficiently alert the people at risk, they were not made aware of reality of what was coming. It says that one of the reasons for this was a disjoint between the meteorological and the hydrological system information. “It is very much welcomed that the response of the staff of Cork City Council has been recognised and praised in the report. When they were most needed those working for the council went beyond the call of duty to help those most severely affected by the floods. “The agencies mentioned in the report, the Department of the Environment, Met Éireann, ESB, Cork City Council and others, must now take action to ensure that the recommendations are implemented. “The feasibility of a flood forecasting system for the River Lee should be immediately examined. Cork City Council must confirm that it has implemented a flood emergency plan, and also whether or not it has agreed interim protocols with ESB, OPW and EPA to access hydrological information which will form the basis for flood forecasting.” Deputy Buttimer concluded by saying “agencies involved at all stages of the emergency management cycle must ensure sufficient cooperation so that future responses to severe weather conditions are not disjointed and are more than merely ‘adequate’.”

Colour me in.....

And the rain it raineth every day. Well, that’s not true, actually. According to statistics it rains on an average of 155 days per year in the east and south to 250 in parts of the west. A day is officially designated a wet day if more than 1mm falls. So I thought it might be interesting to know really know just how much does fall. Now, even in this small country there is actually quite a wide variation depending on where you are. In parts of the Cork and Kerry mountains and Galway, you can get up to an annual average of 100 inches of rain, which is one hell of a lot. To put that in proportion, the annual average at Cork Airport is about 50 inches. Going further east, around Dublin and Wexford it falls to 35 or so, a fairly modest amount really. The first year I was in Ireland, August and September were lovely then the weather broke and it rained for what seemed to be days non-stop. It’s probably exaggerated in my memory but the thing to remember is that in the London area the average is only 25 inches, exactly half what it is here so I had never seen rain so heavy and so persistent. In England Manchester is a standing joke for being so wet and that only gets about 35 inches. So, yes, we do get quite a lot of rain but that is what keeps us so green. I can remember saying to a friend, who is a farmer’s son, that the saying “ Soft day thank God “ was said not meaning it at all. He replied that when it was that steady soft rain, that was the rain that grew the crops, so it was most earnestly meant. I hadn’t seen it that way before. And, of course, along side some countries we hardly get a drop. In parts of Bangladesh they get 200 inches of rain and that is dumped on them in just the three months of the monsoon. To add one more interesting fact, one, just ONE, inch of rain on one acre of land weighs , I am told, 133 tons. This means that if you own a 50 acre farm in this part of the country the weight of the rain falling on your land is, on average, roughly 6,500 tons per week. Exams! Exams! Here are some howlers that have turned up in exam papers; 1. Ancient Egypt was inhabited by mummies and they all wrote in hydraulics They lived in the Sarah Dessert and travelled by Camelot. The climate of the Sarah is such that the inhabitants have to live elsewhere. 2. The Bible is full of interesting caricatures. In the first book of the Bible, Guinessis, Adam and Eve were created from an apple tree. One of their children, Cain, asked, "Am I my brother's son?" 3. Moses led the Hebrew slaves to the Red Sea, where they made unleavened bread which is bread made without any ingredients. Moses went up on Mount Cyanide to get the ten commandments. He died before he ever reached Canada. 4. Solomom had three hundred wives and seven hundred porcupines. 5. The Greeks were a highly sculptured people, and without them we wouldn't have history. The Greeks also had myths. A myth is a female moth.

Seasonal Affective Disorder Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a condition where you develop symptoms of depression in the darker winter months each year. In Ireland and other countries north of the equator, the symptoms usually develop sometime between September and November and continue until March or April. Symptoms tend to be worse in December, January and February. At least 1 in 50 people in Ireland are thought to have SAD. Many more, perhaps as many as 1 in 8 people, have 'winter blues' - a less severe form of the condition. SAD is less common in countries near to the equator where the hours of sunlight are more constant and bright throughout the year. SAD usually first begins between the ages of 20 to 30, but it can develop at any age. It affects four times as many women as men.

What are the symptoms of seasonal

affective disorder? When symptoms develop in the winter, they are similar to those that occur in the non-seasonal 'ordinary' type of depression. The following is a list of common symptoms of depression. You may not have them all, but several usually develop: Low mood for most of the day, nearly every day. Things always seem 'black'. Loss of enjoyment and interest in life, even for activities that you normally enjoy. Abnormal sadness, often with weepiness. Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or uselessness. Poor motivation. Even simple tasks seem difficult. Poor concentration. It may be difficult to read, work, etc. Sleeping problems. Lacking in energy, always tired. SAD can markedly impair quality of life in winter. Symptoms tend to improve and go fairly quickly in the spring, over a week or so. Some people develop great bursts of energy and creativity in

the spring. In a small number of cases, as spring arrives the mood changes from depression into an abnormal 'high' and elated mood (mania or hypomania).

Light therapy for seasonal affective disorder This treatment consists of sitting in front of a special bright light for a session each day and/or using a dawn simulator. Light intensity is measured in lux. Ordinary light bulbs are not strong enough as they only give out 200-500 lux. To treat SAD you need a light source of at least 2500 lux (about 10 times that of ordinary light bulbs). If you think you are suffering from S.A.D. contact your G.P. for an appointment to discuss your options. If you would like more information on S.A.D. or light therapy, contact Garvan at Lynch’s Pharmacy on 4366923.

A brand new comedy festival has hit Kerry. Comedy Central Killarney takes place on September 16th and 17th. Comedy Central Killarney will take place over two stages – The INEC Mainstage and the Today FM Acoustic Stage - on Friday September 16th and Saturday September 17th. Tickets for The INEC Mainstage are priced at a laughable €27.65 for a one day ticket and a jocular €45.00 for a two day ticket. Shows start at 7.30pm. Tickets for the Today FM Acoustic Club are priced at €17.15 for a one day ticket and €30.00 for a two day ticket. Shows commence at 10.00pm. August 26th, 27th and 28th will see the Beamish and Crawford Site on South Main Street transformed into a mini festival site. All events are free! Murphy’s Little Big Nights Out will bid farewell to summer 2011 with Murphy’s Little Big Weekend - a fantastic showcase of all that is great about Cork (with a few visitors thrown in for good measure!). Running from August 26th to 28th, the

weekend will feature four vital ingredients for a great night out in Cork - food, pints, music and laughter! Saturday August 27th will feature two events – the Afternoon Food Fair will showcase the bountiful culinary delights that Cork has to offer, celebrating the work of local chefs, vendors and producers alike. After a weekend of high octane music and comedy, Sunday August 28th will be a chance to kick back and relax for the afternoon at The Sunday Session in association with De Barras. All of the events during the weekend arefree to attend. Pete Tong, the world-famous DJ, has taken out a restraining order against former Massive Attack vocalist Shara Nelson, who sang on the majority of songs from Massive Attack's breakthrough debut album Blue Lines. Nelson has allegedly been harassing Tong with telephone calls and told Tong's colleagues at BBC, where he hosts a radio show, that she was his manager. Tong countered by saying Nelson's actions were causing him "distress and embarrassment".

Home & G arden GARDENING This Week

- Things to do

It can seem like a little consolation that the hedge-cutting season is coming to a close. As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

KITCHEN GARDEN Pot up strawberries for forcing, and stand outdoors in a shaded position. Store Japanese onions, lifted and dried earlier, in a dry frost-free place where they will keep for a few months. Sow Japanese onions in the south. Prune wall-trained peaches and nectarines after fruiting, cutting out old stems and replacing with new. Lift main crop onions with a fork, and dry in the sun.

FLOWER GARDEN Trim Virginia creeper and similar climbers away from gutters and windows. Lift, divide and replant lilies, saving scales and tiny bulbs for potting up. Install earwig traps among dahlias - fill upturned pots with straw or crumpled newspaper, and invert on canes.

LAWNS & HEDGES Trim evergreen hedges for the last time. Sow new lawns on prepared sites.

GREENHOUSE Wash down the glass in greenhouse and cold frames, inside and out. Continue potting hyacinth bulbs up to 15 September for Christmas

Garden Competition

Congratulations to this weeks Garden winner Dina Maye, Shanbally. Dina wins a 50 Euro voucher from Kiernans Garden Centre, Douglas Court. Our Summer Gardening Competition is open to all our readers. You can win a prize every week from “Now” to September. So get out the hoe and start now for a stunning summer garden. If your garden or any part of your garden is blooming, or just looking good, why not lets us have a photo. We would love to print it. If you have a neighbor with a nice garden who might be a bit shy, why not take a photo for them. Send your photo to Gardening, Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas. Cork . flowering. Start making up winter hanging baskets. Remove bottom leaves of cordon tomatoes, up to the lowest trusses, to admit air and light. Repot or pot on cyclamen clearing. corms once their leaves are growing steadily. Pot on greenhouse primulas into 13cm (Sin) pots. Sow greenhouse cyclamen in soil-less compost in warmth.

WATER GARDEN Continue thinning and deadheading in the bog garden.

IN GENERAL Make containers and wire compounds for leaves and compost, ready for autumn clearing. Watch out for Vine weevil grubs feeding voraciously on many kinds of plants, and treat with parasitic nematodes. Check brassicas regularly for caterpillars and clusters of butterfly eggs. Finnish summer pruning all fruit. Cut out the exhausted stems of loganberries and other hybrid berries, and tie in new canes. Water and mulch runner beans and the pods ripen Watch out for woolly aphids on apples and treat with methylated spirits.

Cork Harbour Cruises By Michelle Moore Having sailed down the Nile and the Seine amongst my travels in the past, it never occurred to me to take a cruise down Cork Harbour to Cobh. However, last Friday morning, I boarded The Spirit of the Isles of Cork Harbour Sightseeing Cruises to gain a new perspective on and around Cork Harbour. The Spirit of the Isles vessel with its gathering of local people and tourists departed Penrose Wharf at 11am. There was a safety briefing and demonstration as the boat made its way down Cork Harbour. The passengers are reassured that the cruise is “like riding a bus”. It was an overcast day but the cruise was calm and relaxing. Machinery, alarms and manual work could be heard as the boat passed the docks. The trawlers Arklow Rogue and Gerd Sibum were docked. While this gentle cruise sailed past Tivoli, Shandon Boat Club and Pairc Ui Chaoimh, we were entertained with historical and social commentary. This was provided by a member of the boat’s crew. It was delightful to see the seagulls sway in the soft breeze alongside the boat and as the boat weaved between the buoys, a gentle, cool breeze and sea spray refreshed my face. The Spirit of the Isles sailed over the Jack Lynch tunnel passing Little Island and Mahon Point. From this new perspective, it was interesting to be above the tunnel and not driving through it. It was also nice to see Cork’s largest shopping centre from this new point of view. The vessel then passed Fota Island and local lore was picked up from the insightful commentary.

The Spirit of the Isles was once used as a tug and also as a passenger ferry for Cape Clear. Its seating is comfortable and its lower and upper decks provide space to walk around to view the sights from every angle. Great views of Passage West, Monkestown and Ringaskiddy were observed before the boat sailed into Kennedy Pier in Cobh. Cork Harbour and its surroundings are rich in history as are the Nile and the Seine. And during the 150 minute all around sailing time, the highlight of the cruise was seeing Blackrock Castle from the water. To see it from the boat was truly special. Now one can understand what it is like from a sailor’s perspective.

Cycling for their Chosen Charity On the 19th August, John Behan from Nurney, Co. Kildare and a visually impaired cyclist Billy Shannahan from Thurles will attempt to cycle 400 miles in three days on a tandem from Mizen Head in Co. Cork to Malin Head in Co. Donegal. All proceeds from this trip will go to their chosen charity the Irish Guide Dogs. Both are experienced cyclists who participate in various charity cycles and dedicate their lives to training hard to ensure that they are at peak fitness level. John Behan recently returned from his latest cycling challenge where he & friend Seamus Buckley FROM MOAT CO WESTMEATH, successfully cycled from John o’ Groats to Lands End in three days a 935 mile cycle for the Irish Guide Dogs. John Behan is 65 years of age and Billy Shanahan is 55 years of age and is visually impaired since he was 22 years old.

Douglas G.A.A. Festival With Seán McCarthy It was a very busy few days last weekend as Douglas G.A.A. Club hosted its Summer Festival. Organised by the social committee led by Michael Kennedy, the festival offered something to satisfy all discerning visitors to Douglas G.A.A. Club. Jimmy Higgins and Noel O’Leary emerged from over thirty participants to contest the final of the pool tournament and after a cliff hanger Higgins claimed the title to prove that practice does indeed make perfect. On Saturday afternoon there were magicians, face painters, sumo wrestlers and a bouncy castle to entertain the youngsters while Seán Collins won the Superstar Skills competition ahead of his friend Eoin Dolan. The Tug O’ War competition was shrouded in controversy. Despite the rules confirming that it was to be restricted to seven participants per team, it seemed at one stage that the entire club membership was pulling the rope. Eventually, a team that included Paul Roche, John O’Mahony and Eamonn McSweeney were declared the winners. Music during the weekend was provided by “Route 66” and “Anna and Pure Gold”. On Sunday evening as activities closed, on behalf of the club members, club chairman Fearghal Hayes thanked the social committee for their efforts. • Emma Kavanagh and Erin Lynch at the Douglas GAA club Fun Day Sumo Wrestling competition last Saturday

G.A.A. FOCUS Snippets from the Local and National Scene By Pat Harrington In last weeks column I used a term which I borrowed from a football pundit and which I adapted to suit the small-ball game, ‘Puke Hurling’. I also stated that since Dublin fell short of the mark in goal scoring to date I expected the Shannonsiders to win. Well as The Dubs scored four majors in that game I got it wrong on both counts. But do not misjudge me, I was hoping for a Dublin victory for the good of the game. As I’ve stated on previous occasions the possession game is taken way over the top; it is just awful to watch. There was too much hand passing in this encounter, when time and time again possession was lost, scores were lost and scores were given away because of over use of the short pass. It is a disease of which the game must rid itself. Don’t get me wrong, it is not about striking the ball aimlessly. The more short passes a team attempts the greater the chance of losing possession. This was a very poor game of hurling and my comments are merely meant to highlight the quality play on this particular occasion. Dublin will be pleased at reaching their first semi-final in over fifty years. At the end of the day this win was, for The Dubs all-important. By the same token Limerick hurling has got to be resurrected. Though their enthusiasm was noteworthy they certainly overplayed the short game and this was not pleasing to the eye. Cork Football

Did anyone really think that Cork would lose to Mayo? Rebel supporters were cock sure of victory. The whole scene was all set up for a Cork vs. Kerry semifinal. One media scribe stated that Cork and Kerry would get rid of the debris prior to their encounter in the semi-final. This was to be the clash of the titans. Cork would at long last overcome the hoodoo that is Kerry football. Unfortunately Mayo did not read the script. Perhaps complacency set in and with all the talk of Kerry in the background there is a possibility that Cork minds were not focused. On the one hand Cork football has not got a great record at senior level. Though it has underachieved down through the decades, to be fair this team has won a division 2 league title, two National League and an all-Ireland title in three years. Kerry were the only team to defeat Cork since 2005 (prior to the Mayo success). Cork appeared to be a tired team in the second half. On the day some of the performances were stale, and with such a number of players underachieving it was going to be a difficult ask. There are days when this happens; when it does, fresh legs are needed and Cork were short of experience on the line. Sheehan, Goulding and Colm O’Neill were a huge loss. On this occasion the Cork management team didn’t cover itself in glory. There was a huge issue at full back and nothing was

Pfizer Pitch & Putt Notes By Brendan Hayes, Results for week ending 14/8/11 Wednesday night 18 hole scramble 1st nett Mark O Riordan Pat Fitzgerald and Graham Bouge 34 1/3 1st gr Syd Venner Chris McCarthy and Barry Morrissey 41 Friday night Juvenile matchplay this was a classic the match between James Maher and Brendan Crowley had every thing and it went to the 40 hole before it was decided with James Maher emerging victorious, well done to both lads. in section A of the juvenile competition Fionn Murphy was the winner 6 under in section B Graham Egan was the winner and Aron Drinan was runner up.
