The Word

by George Thompson - Editor

9/11 - A Horror still unthinkable! I was driving through Turners Cross at lunchtime on the 9th of September 2001 when a news flash on the radio reported that the World Trade Centre had been hit by a plane. Moments later, a second plane hit and the coverage on tv showing the unfolding horror and collapse of both towers will live with us all forever. Last weekend, on the 10th anniversary I watch some of the many tv programmes about 9/11 and it is plain to see and palpable, the confusion and disbelief that still remains, 10 years on. The most interesting and compelling documentary was on Discovery Channel which depicted the whole event in real time from the moment the first plane struck the north tower until both towers collapsed. News film coverage, private camcorder recordings, radio communications between rescue personnel and interviews with those bystanders on the ground, all during that hour and a half of mayhem and confusion on the streets of New York, from the first strike to the collapse. It was a surreal depiction of one of history’s most shocking events. Our hearts go out to the relatives of those who lost their lives on that fateful day. The Sales Institute in Cork welcomes Micheál Martin, Leader Fianna Fail The Sales Institute of Ireland Munster Region is delighted to confirm that Fianna Fail Leader Micheál Martin will be the guest speaker at its first Breakfast Seminar of the 2011/12 Season. The event will take place at the Clarion Hotel, Lapps Quay on Friday September 16th from 7.30am – 9.00am Since entering national politics in 1989, the Cork South Central T.D. has served in four cabinet posts as Minister for Foreign Affairs, Minister for Enterprise, Trade & Employment, Minister for Health and Minister for Education. Drawing on his extensive knowledge and experience, Micheál Martin will discuss ‘Leadership and Confidence in Difficult Times’. Performance ? Dear Editor, Please allow me space to make a point about what I read on last weeks papers about the claims the City Councilors made. They should be paid on performance! They should be ashamed of themselves! If they were paid on Performance I think they would all be on the Dole. I also think they should be sacked for robbing our country! Yours truly, Joe Brown Blackrock

Sunny Afternoons Montessori Dear Editor Sunny Afternoons Montessori School has regrettably closed since September 1st. I would like to thank all the children and parents for their wonderful support since September 2002. College Costs A new student contribution charge of €2,000 is being introduced in higher education with effect from the 2011/2012 academic year. This new charge was announced by the previous Fianna Fail - Green Party government in last January’s Budget. The charge will replace the Student Services Charge and will apply to all students who currently benefit under the ‘free fees’ scheme. Students who qualify under the third level grant schemes will have this contribution paid as part of their grant. Given the financial pressures that this contribution may place on families and in order to alleviate this somewhat, a provision has also been put in place, through the availability of tax reliefs, so that second and subsequent siblings will not have to bear the full increase. Based on current rates of relief, the effective cost of the student contribution charge, net of tax relief, for second and subsequent siblings will be €1,600 each. Furthermore, given that there will be situations where family income is marginally in excess of current eligibility levels for maintenance grant support, an additional category of support of “50% Student Contribution” is being included in the current higher education grants schemes with an increased income eligibility threshold which will provide for half the costs of the student contribution. Higher education institutions have also been asked to put in place arrangements under which a student may opt to pay the charge in two equal installments of 50% in September and 50% in January in a given academic year.

Douglas Community School Douglas Community School athlete Cullen Lynch rounded off a superb year by winning the All Ireland Clubs u19 1500m title on the track in July. Cullen has been improving steadily over the past few years ever since he started athletics in the school 5 years ago. His All Ireland win this summer was a huge step up in his career and one that puts him on the radar of some collegiate coaches. Cullen was also the captain of the schools senior cross-country team that had a famous victory over the mighty St Malachys College Belfast in March at the All Ireland Schools Cross-Country championships and also finished 4th in the All Ireland Schools Senior 1500m in June. All at the school would like to congratulate him on his superb achievement.

Winter Maintenance Grant increased by €1.25 million Cork South Central Fine Gael TD Jerry Buttimer has welcomed a 12.5% increase in the Winter Maintenance Grant. Deputy Buttimer said “the increase in the Winter Maintenance Grant will assist local authorities in keeping important roads clear during the winter months. The extra funding has been made possible by savings made in the Department of Transport. As well as the additional funding the savings made have also helped purchase 60,000 tonnes of salt on top of the supplies purchased separately by the National Roads Authority. “Cork City will receive €48,534 and Cork County will get almost €1.3 million, an increase of €161,694, in the Winter Maintenance Grant. This funding will help to cover the cost of purchasing, transporting, storing and spreading salt, and other works associated with extreme weather conditions. “Over the last few winters we have experienced harsh conditions which made some roads impassable. The announcement by Minister Varadkar of the increased Winter Maintenance Grant, nationally from €10 million to €11.25 million, will help in ensuring that we are more prepared for harsh weather conditions this winter.”

Community Comes Together in Remembrance The event was organised by Breaking The Silence to mark World Suicide Prevention Day and took place at the Sirius Arts Centre, Cobh. Breaking The Silence also wanted to give Community members the opportunity to listen to a range of speakers on the evening around the subject of Suicide which included Minister of State for Disability, Equality, Mental Health and Older People Kathleen Lynch, Cork Senior Football Team Manager Conor Counihan, Cobh Town Mayor Jim Quinlan, Evelyn McGrath of Cumann Na Daoine Youghal and members of Breaking The Silence Jimmy Losty and John Mansworth. Minister Lynch spoke of the importance of completing Suicide Intervention and Prevention training, namely the ASIST and Safe Talk Programmes. Cobh Town Mayor Jim Quinlan spoke very passionately of the importance of groups like Breaking The Silence as being a “beacon of light” in what is a very challenging area for us all and pledged that

Cobh Town Council would be delighted to help the Group in any possible way. Conor Counihan was also very positive around completing Suicide Intervention and Prevention training which his squad have all completed. John Mansworth thanked everybody who had supported the group to date and encouraged people to consider the training at some point in the future. The night also included the singing of “Let’s Break The Silence” an inspiring piece of music written for Breaking The Silence by local song writer and secondary school teacher Marion Horgan. Caroline also sang during the candle vigil which was a beautiful addition to the atmosphere on the evening. Breaking The Silence would like to thank everybody who attended the evening especially friends and families who have been affected by Suicide. Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn

Now that we no longer have to wonder what’s happening at the World Trade Center site. After years of delays and stagnation, construction is moving forward at a hectic pace, as 3,500 workers each day build two skyscrapers, a train station, a memorial and a museum. With the opening of the eight-acre 9/11 Memorial , we saw enormous waterfalls thundering down into pools marking the footprint of the original Twin Towers, all surrounded by bronze panels inscribed with the victims’ names. More than 225 swamp white oak trees cast their shadow on the expansive memorial plaza, and visitors can tilt their heads to see the top of the stillrising One World Trade Center. Noel O’Callaghan of Douglas, sent us this poem: The New World Trade Centre It’s the tenth Anniversary Of that infamous attack And New York City Has now bounced back They cleared the site For the structure Of a new designed World Trade Centre

Exhibitions on the History of Cork City Hall One of the most splendid buildings of Cork is Cork City Hall. The current structure, replaced the old City Hall, which was destroyed in the ‘burning of Cork’ in 1920. It was designed by Architects Alfred Jones and Stephen Kelly and built by the Cork company Sisks. The foundation stone was laid by Eamonn DeValera, President of the Executive Council of the State on the 9th July, 1932. The first council meeting was held in City Hall on the 24th April 1935. Celebrating its 75th anniversary this September, the building was formerly opened by Eamonn DeValera on 8th September, 1936. The building is designed on classic lines to harmonise with the examples of eighteenth and nineteenth century architecture. The facades are of beautiful silver limestone from the Little Island quarries. To mark the 75th anniversary of the official opening of Cork City Hall, Cllr Kieran McCarthy has compiled a small exhibition entitled Rebuilding Cork City Hall, 1920-1936. It is on display till the 25th September in the foyer of the new building. A second exhibition on the 1930s design and plan of Cork City Hall has been compiled by Cork City and County Archives and this is on display outside the Council Chamber.

Here are a few pointers when purchasing your outfit for that special day. This should be a fun time for any mother so make it a day out. Give yourself plenty of time have no other appointment on the day. Flick through a few Wedding Magazines. It’s a great way to pick up a few ideas. Keep an opened mind. Don’t shop looking for a certain colour or style as this limits your choice. Know your body shape. Ask the assistant what would suit. Most assistants working in occasional wear are trained on what would suits what shape. Suiting your body shape is one of the most important parts of purchasing your outfit. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and advice. Bring a close friend or family member they will know your personality and make you feel at ease. One or two people is plenty, too many can be very over powering with a lot of different opinions. Bring a few outfits to the dressing room even if you think you would never wear a particular style it’s important to try them on as you can not judge on a hanger

what will suit. If you feel good in something ask the assistant to accessorise with headwear jewellery and bag hold it aside and try on the rest. Make sure your makeup artist knows what colour you are wearing and she will give you the best advice on nail varnish and eye shadow. Bring your headwear to the hairdresser the morning of the wedding as she will secure it and place it properly on your head. Make sure you feel comfortable in the outfit, it is very important on the wedding day that you feel good in what you are wearing. You shouldn’t have to think about the outfit you have spent enough time doing that. Its now time to have fun wearing it…

Does Fat Change My Energy Levels? In last week’s article, I shared two strategies to maximise your energy potential. This week I am going to share with you one more very important but often misunderstood strategy. Do you know that the oils and fats that we consume have a huge impact on how our body functions? Most of us know to increase omega-3 foods in our diet, but equally important is to decrease omega-6 foods. The ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 in prehistoric humans was about 1:1. The ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 in some industrialized countries is estimated to be 9-fold higher than optimal. This can result in dangerous levels of inflammation in the body. The higher the tissue level of proinflammatory omega-6, the greater is the risk of heart disease. To decrease this risk and find more energy, the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 must be optimised. This is a two-fold strategy. You can increase the anti-inflammatory omega-3 fats by eating foods like flax seeds, chia seeds, mackerel, and wild salmon. You can decrease your omega-6 intake by eliminating

omega-6 rich oils – safflower, grape seed, sunflower, corn, and soybean. Additionally, corn and soybean oil are also often genetically modified (GM). You can also decrease omega-6 intake by avoiding deep-fried foods, dramatically reducing processed foods (as these foods are often loaded with omega-6 oils), changing your cooking oil to a high-quality organic coconut oil, and by making your own salad dressings from high-quality organic olive oil. High-fat meat and high-fat dairy are rich in omega-6. If you choose to eat red meats, your best choice is grassfed organic beef, goat and lamb. Choose organic flax fed chicken eggs over other eggs. These have a more favorable fatty acid profile. The healthiest way to consume dietary fats is via whole foods, not an oil or supplement. Learn more strategies by attending my wellness presentation, “Creating Boundless Energy” on Wed. Sept. 21st, 2011 @ 7:00pm. Reserve your free seat today by calling 021-4360009. Psoriasis Psoriasis is a common skin disease that affects the life cycle of skin cells. Psoriasis causes cells to build up rapidly on the surface of the skin, forming thick silvery scales and itchy, dry, red patches that are sometimes painful. Psoriasis is a persistent, long-lasting (chronic) disease. You may have periods when your psoriasis symptoms improve or go into remission alternating with times your psoriasis worsens.

ing: Red patches of skin covered with silvery scales Small scaling spots (commonly seen in children) Dry, cracked skin that may bleed Itching, burning or soreness Thickened, pitted or ridged nails Swollen and stiff joints Psoriasis patches can range from a few spots of dandruff-like scaling to major eruptions that cover large areas. Mild cases of psoriasis may be a nuisance. But more severe cases can be painful, disfiguring and disabling.

cell called a T lymphocyte or T cell. Normally, T cells travel throughout the body to detect and fight off foreign substances, such as viruses or bacteria. If you have psoriasis, however, the T cells attack healthy skin cells by mistake as if to heal a wound or to fight an infection. Psoriasis treatments aim to: Interrupt the cycle that causes an increased production of skin cells, thereby reducing inflammation and plaque formation. Remove scale and smooth the skin, which is particularly true of topical treatments that you apply to your skin. Psoriasis treatments can be divided into three main types: topical treatments, light therapy and oral medications.

Lifestyle remedies Although self-help measures won't cure psoriasis, they may help improve the appearance and feel of damaged skin. These measures may benefit you: Take daily baths. Use moisturizer. Cover the affected areas overnight. Expose your skin to small amounts of sunlight. Apply medicated cream or ointment. Avoid psoriasis triggers, if possible. Avoid drinking alcohol. Home & G a r den GARDENING - Things to do This Week

You've got to put your back into the work you want to do and put up with the part of it that is a bore for you. You've got to do the drudgery and make the sacrifice. For success in any garden you've got to pay the price. Plan for the spring and plant lots of spring bulbs. As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week. Flower Garden Finish clearing summer bedding, stir in general fertiliser and level the ground. Start planting out spring flowers in showery weather, or water thoroughly after planting. Cut back exhausted herbaceous perennials, and divide overcrowded plants. Finish planting daffodils, and start on crocus, fritillaries and other smaller bulbs. Start planting evergreen shrubs and trees. Pull up exhausted hardy annuals; collect any seeds or scatter where plants

were growing. Dismantle window box and container displays ready to replant with spring bedding and bulbs. Sow antirrhinums in a cold frame: sow some direct in

Exclusive Preview of the New Civic The new Honda Civic will be launched tomorrow at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). Honda has released the first exclusive photos of the new Civic. Designed and developed specifically for the European market, the new Civic will be offered as a five-door hatchback

and will compete in the C-segment. It will reach European showrooms in early 2012. The designers of the new Civic wanted to keep the sporty and advanced elements of the car's character but tailor them to express the new model's even more elegant yet dynamic feel.

Sources of inspiration included a ‘blended wing body' aeroplane in which the fuselage and wings blend into a single body for superior aerodynamic performance, quietness and habitability. Nearly all of the body components have been redesigned on the new Civic with particular focus on ride and handling, reduced CO2 emissions, interior quality, while preserving the class-leading cabin and boot space and flexible practicality. Find out more by watching the short film releases detailing the car's development. The films are hosted on an interactive media player you can easily download films and images or even embed the whole player in your site. http://multivu.com/players/English/51356-honda-motoreurope/

Young @ Heart by Phil Goodman

Our thanks to the Lord Mayor Cllr Terry Shannon and Lady Mayoress Ursala for hosting a civic reception in City Hall for the young at heart. It was a very special occasion and enjoyed by all. As accommodation is so expensive for young people, student nurses, teachers and students all find that accommodation is one of the biggest problems. “Homeshare” is a new company which offers a service that is simple and affordable for people who feel vulnerable or isolated and need help or just companionship around the home. Carefully selected home sharers can assist in areas such as cleaning, laundry, gardening as well as providing friendship and security. Homeshare is the exchange of housing for help in the home. A householder typically an older person with a spare room offers free or low cost accommodation to another for an agreed level of support. Homeshare was originally set up to benefit older people who need support to live independently and gives families reassurance that their loved one has somebody in the house looking after their welfare and can also delay the cost of expensive residential care.

It is new in Ireland, but already very successful in the UK and America. The Autumn/Winter programme of events is varied. Our main function is getting people together to learn new skills and keeping our minds and bodies alert. Social gatherings are very beneficial in reducing loneliness and isolation, also having something to look forward to. There are painting classes, computers, Tai-Chi, bingo, indoor bowls, social dancing and outings; these also help build solidarity and friendships. For all those Daniel O’ Donnell fans he is in Killarney in the INEC in August 2012, I know, I know what you are saying “is she gone mad thinking that far ahead”, well if you want to see Daniel you will have to book your tickets before the end of September as they are selling really fast. Tickets are 44 - 50 euros, and it will be an overnight stay in the Gleneagle hotel in Killarney. Not as far away is the young at heart Mediterranean cruise that is on May 5th 2012, the annual Christmas party is on the 4th of December in the Rochestown park, Christmas party 13th December St Columbas hall, and the naval

10. ALL ABOUT TONIGHT-PIXIE LOTT This weekend at the City Limits, Will E Robo will take to the stage on both Friday and Saturday night. Doors are 20:30 and tickets are €16. Animated, energetic, charismatic, and hysterical are just a few words that describe America’s unique, award winning comedy talent Will-E Robo. Billed as P’diddy’s No.1 Bad boy of comedy (the U.S. HBO tv series,) Will is a universal comedian, overflowing with energy, combining his hilarious story-telling abilities with amazing sound effects. In the US Will has received the Flip Wilson Award for Best Original Act, has an impressive television resume, including numerous appearances at The Apollo, winning six times. He has also appeared twice on both BET’s Comic View and Russell Simmons Def Comedy Jam. Most memorable are his appearances on P. Diddy’s Bad Boys of Comedy, (2005 & 2007). Coldplay fans are in for a surprise this week with the news that pop queen Rihanna makes a guest appearance on their upcoming fifth album Mylo Xyloto. Rihanna appears on a track called Princess of China. Chris Martin told The Sun: "The album is designed as a whole piece. It has boy and girl lead characters and top of our list for the girl part was Rihanna... but it took a while to pluck up the courage to ask her." "She has such an amazing voice and it's so different to mine. When the vocal happened I thought 'Wow, you sound different' but I think that's also because she was singing a different song to what we are

used to hearing from her and it is written by a bloke from Devon", continued Martin. Michael Pedicone, the drummer who was fired by My Chemical Romance recently, has released a statement giving his side of the story concerning his abrupt departure from the band, saying that rumours on the internet as to the reasons for his dismissal are off the mark and incorrect. He said to press: "Almost as soon as I began touring with MCR I ran into problems with a member of the band's crew who I'll not name. The problems were many, big and small, but some of them were large enough that they began to greatly impact me and, by extension, my family. I'd reached my wits' end, and I made what was certainly the poorest decision of my life. Rather than address the issues that I had with the crew member in an open and honest manner, I tried to make them look irresponsible. My intention was to make this person look incompetent." Pedicone then went on to say that he had no intention of profiting from the theft but, somewhat interestingly, didn't reveal what it was that he had stolen. One Direction may have only just unleashed their debut single on the charts, but the lads have confessed they are already loving their new found fame. The boyband, who finished third on The X Factor last year, have already smashed download preorder records with their first track, What Makes You Beautiful, but they insist they are still five ordinary young men. Speaking of their success and growing fan base, member Zayn Malik told press: "We’re five normal lads, we’re not massively ripped, we don’t have amazing bodies and we freely admit we can’t dance,” He continued: "We had a girl who flew from Australia to America on her birthday just to meet us at the airport. Now that’s utter dedication. It’s unbelievable really.” Niall Horan agreed: "You start to recognise the same girls because they turn up wherever we are, although there have been a few new ones recently. I’ve noticed a load from France. Maybe it’s their school holidays or something.”

When asked about the comparisons between 1D and legends The Beatles, Harry Styles stated: "Comparing us to The Beatles is ridiculous. We’re not exactly going to be complaining if we come second to them in the charts...” Louis Tomlinson added: "We know we are living the dream and I don’t know if it will ever properly sink in. It’s such a dramatic change from what our lives were before and I can’t see it ever getting normal." “When we go home to see friends, we are around people who aren’t living the same life as us, so it’s still weird. But if any of us does start to take themselves a bit too seriously they’ll be getting a slap from the rest of the band to keep him in check.”

G.A.A. FOCUS

College Corinthians AFC

Snippets from the Local and National Scene By Pat Harrington Kilkenny vs. Tipperary Prior to this game my fancy was for a Tipperary victory. Up to 8 out of 10 people I spoke to went for Kilkenny. All the television pundits chose the Cats with the exception of Michael Duignan. Was this the classic we expected? No, but in particular the Kilkenny defence produced an awesome performance, they were akin to men possessed. Should someone have predicted prior to the game that Lar Corbett and Eoin Kelly would be held scoreless from play he would surely be branded a heretic. Kilkenny mixed their play well and hurled a share of short ball. In contrast Tipperary overdid the short passing and were guilty of some very poor decisions. Whilst one wondered if the Noresiders were fielding some over-the-hill players, on the day they sent out a serious warning to any county who may be considered pretenders to their throne. Physically and mentally The Cats put the lads from the Premier County back in their box. Currently Kilkenny are undoubtedly the Man U. of the hurling world. Some say the game has become too physical – perhaps it has. Still, as I’ve stated in this column recently Kilkenny are the benchmark. It is up to the other counties to match them on championship day. Forget about the National League, winning the Liam McCarthy Cup is the pinnacle of hurling success. Bookies’ Birds Eye View At this point Tipp and Kilkenny are, at 11/8 joint favourites for 2012. Dublin is quoted 9/1 with Cork and Galway at 10/1. Street Leagues Last week on arrival at the pitch somewhat early for the Street Leagues, I was asked to help out

with the under 5 football. At this

stage the training is about catching

Under 12 Premier Division Corinthian Boys 3 Ringmahon Rangers 1 Corinthians started well and playing with a strong wind had most of the possession and created a number of good chances with Jaze Kabia and Mark Cronin combining well. Corinthians deservedly went ahead when Jaze Kabia converted after good work from Daniel O Donovan and Adam Gilbride. The Corinthians defence remained tight however with a few minutes to half time a good break from Ringmahon resulted in an equaliser to make things all square at half time. Against a strong wind in the second half Corinthians grew into the game and started playing good passing football this resulted in a good goal from Adam Coleman after good work from Niall Murphy and Colin O Mahony. Corinthians secured the game with a third goal from Conor Fagan finishing off a fine move with a great header. Conor Russell, Gerard O Mahony and Patrick Buckley played well. Under 13 Premier Division Corinthian Boys 2 1 Lakewood Ath. 0 In very windy conditions Corinthians dominated the pay for long periods. Lakewoods defence were equal to the pressure and it was 2minutes into the second half before the deadlock was broken. Corinthian won a free 25yards out and it was Eoin Murphy who took the resonsibility to fire Corinthians into the lead. Bryan Hill followed up 10minutes later to put the game beyond Lakewood. Dylan Ward and Stephen Fox worked extremely hard to make significant contributions throughout the game. The back four of Alex Chandler, Ciaran Couch, James O'Donovan, James Holland with goalkeeper John Weir where outstanding to keep their second consecutive clean sheet of the season. There were also good performances from Eoin Davis, Mathew McAuliffe and Arseni Lamonov.

reminded me of the old adage about Browne’s cows, as together they all chased the one ball. The scene is of pure innocence as some aren’t quite sure if they should be there at all. All at some stage are looking to the sideline for some form of approval from Mammy or Daddy. Actually the parents are more excited than their fledglings. They are wondering if they are watching a star in the making and hoping perhaps to hear some word of praise from the coach. One young man is heard to declare “Sure I know how to do it”, upon which the coach walks away scratching his head in bewilderment. It’s really a culture shock for some of the children, particularly when they are surrounded by six or seven of their peers. I’ll conclude here with a word to the parents; continue to bringing your children along, (please don’t force them) but above all help and encourage them at home by kicking football with them when the opportunity presents itself. Practice will give them confidence and make them better players. At the end of the day it is all about fun – never forget that. Minor Premier Football Well done to Douglas minor premier

Under 14 Premier Division Carrigaline Utd. 0 Corinthian Boys 2 Blustery conditions did not deter Corinthians from producing a superb performance away to Carrigaline, 2 goals from Colin O Brien proved the difference. The first goal came on 8 minutes when Colin O Brien stormed through from midfield passed to Harry Shanahan who’s return pass split the defence to an on running Colin who slotted it passed the Carrigaline keeper. Our second goal came when Bryan Cotter’s cross found Harry Shanahan, who passed to Colin O Brien just inside the penalty box who struck a superb shot to the top corner. Corinthians dominated the game from then on, with a superb performance from Alex O Driscoll. Mark O Leary, Dean Swords, Sean Desmond, played very well.
