The Word

by George Thompson - Editor

Well done! Well done to all those students who received their Junior Cert results last week. There’s a lot of pressure on students these days to perform and achieve high results, so hats off to all. Join Roy Keane this Saturday for some Serious Bargain Hunting this Saturday Join Roy Keane for some bargain hunting at “Spring Clean for Charity”; which takes place this this Saturday, 24th September from 11am to 5pm in Cork City Hall in aid of St. Vincent de Paul, Cork, and disadvantaged youth in Ireland. People from all over Cork and beyond, as well as well-known faces like Rachel Allen, Lorraine Keane, Bill Cullen and Celia Holman-Lee, have de-cluttered their homes and offices and donated items in support of Cork’s biggest and best charity sale. Cork’s own, Roy Keane will be on hand to help bargain hunters rummage through the treasure trove of bric-a-brac, trinkets and fashion that have all been generously donated. “Spring Clean for Charity” has something for every kind of shopper – from fabulous vintage clothing from designers like Jean Muir and Bill Blass, to never used sound systems; from nearly new furniture, to once worn Philip Treacy hats. For those on the hunt for exclusive collectors’ items, bidding in the charity auction for two jackets belonging to the late music legend, Rory Gallagher is a must; while budding chefs can bid for Clodagh McKenna’s famous red apron! On top of all that, Kearys Motor Group have kindly donated a car for the charity raffle on Saturday, so there’s a chance to walk away with much more than you bargained for! Doors open at 11am for a fun day of bargain hunting and celebrity spotting; and entry to City Hall is just €5 at the door, while kids under 12 go free. All proceeds from “Spring Clean for Charity” go to St. Vincent de Paul, Cork and disadvantaged youth in Ireland. For further information on “Spring Clean for Charity” visit www.springcleanforcharity.ie.

A Book; a Play; the Douglas Connection. Dear Editor, In 1949, Tom Barry who had commanded the West Cork Flying Column during the War of Independence published his book "Guerrilla Days in Ireland" covering the activities against the Crown Forces. "Guerrilla Days in Ireland" has been adapted for the stage by Neil Pearson at the Everyman Palace Theatre. The costumes were exact and the sound effects were very realistic, particularly for a person close to the stage. The major actions at Kilmichael and Crossbarry received no more extra treatment than the various

smaller actions against the Black and Tans and Auxiliaries who terrorised the countryside burning, beating and shooting civilians and unarmed volunteers. The Essex Regiment at Bandon pulled out the nails of the fingers of Tom Hales and Tom Hart. They also mutilated the bodies of many of their victims. Tom Barry described the Essex Regiment as 'the dredgings of the underworld' of London. His Flying Column harassed and attacked that Regiment and inflicted protracted casualties on them in and around Bandon. In May 1921, Tom Barry had to travel by train to Dublin to meet the officers of the G.H.Q. Staff. Tom borrowed the name, personal letters and other paraphernalia from Ted Ryder

of Carrageen, Crookstown. The journey to Dublin, and while he was in Dublin, was charmed good fortune. However on the return journey at Belrose Upton, he was surrounded by 500 soldiers of the Essex Regiment. Tom said that he was Ted Ryder of Crookstown. After much questioning and searching, Major Percival accepted that he was Ted Ryder - Tom had a miraculous escape. A few years after the War of Independence, the real Ted Ryder

came to live in a farm at Scart Road Douglas. Ted's descendents are still living around Douglas and involved in a number of local organisations. Ted's grandson Tim is the Chairperson of the Grange/ Frankfield Association. Ted Ryder is the Douglas connection with the Play. Yours sincerely, Con O'Mahony Grangewood Court

LYNCH WELCOMES PROGRESS ON LEGISLATION TO END UPWARD-ONLY RENT REVIEWS Legislation that will end the scourge of upward-only rent reviews has been included in the Government’s priority list for this Dail session. The Legislative Programme for this Dáil term was published when the Dáil resumed last week. Titled the ‘Landlord and Tenant (Business Leases Review Bill)’, the bill that will give effect to the commitment in the Programme for Government to end upward-only rent reviews in the retail sector. This means that Bill will be published in the coming weeks or months. I have repeatedly highlighted the particular difficulties that have arisen with regard to upward only rent reviews in commercial properties and I believe this that this is a situation that must be tackled urgently. The retail sector has suffered two-fold from the property bias of the economic policy of the previous Govt. First, retailers saw revenues plunge after the dramatic collapse of the property bubble; and secondly, they have found themselves trapped in upward only boom-time leases, with recession levels of consumer demand. This toxic combination has resulted in the loss of an estimated 50,000 retail jobs over the past two years, and the closure of long-standing businesses in our cities, towns and communities the length and breadth of Ireland. Labour has been highlighting this issue for almost two years, and I will continue to press this matter in government. I look forward to the enactment of this legislation, so that retail businesses can finally get out from under the tyranny of upward-only rent reviews.

those that know you and if you get caught horsing into a doughnut, you get cries of, “But I thought you were on a diet” thus ruining the moment, and you feel ridiculous. At the risk of being ridiculous, three weeks ago I started the Stone Age Diet. I don’t know if that’s the official name for it but you only eat what the caveman ate i.e. all the meat you want with the fat trimmed off – very picky those cavemen and plenty fruit, veg, nuts and seeds. I saw an article about it in one of the Sunday papers where the writer lost 13kg in three months. Unfortunately the article didn’t mention dairy products and I wonder did cavemen have cows back then and if they did, would they know how to milk them and make cheese and yogurt. I’ll give up anything but I must have milk in my tea. All baked products are off the menu. Nothing is allowed that was grown from a crop e.g. bagels, bread, muffins, cakes, potatoes and rice. Since these constituted 90% of my eating hab-

I was driving the kids to school and was listening to Today FM on the radio when an advert came on about conserving Dublin water. I thought it was a joke. I could barely see the road for the rain. As I peered through my rain saturated windscreen with the wipers working at full speed, I laughed: the one thing that is plentiful and free in Ireland is water and they’re telling us to be careful with it. And now they want to re-introduce water rates to discourage us from wasting it. There are currently mini rivers of the stuff flowing past my front door, the garden has been no go zone for weeks because it so soggy, bogs are moving in Kerry and there is flooding in Mallow and Limerick. We can’t contain it. It’s not like Australia where they suffer from droughts – we should be so lucky – because there’ll be plenty more tomorrow. Maeve Binchy once said that telling the world that you are writing a book is like going on a diet. You are setting up an expectation to all

about 20 yards and then gave up. Like Paris Hilton, I put him under my arm and carried him the rest of the way. Little dogs are like babies, they’re great for breaking the ice with strangers who stop to pat him. I’ve picked up great tips on how it’s important to let the dog know who is master and to tune into the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic channel. But the greatest benefit of all, apart from the enormous affection he gives, is the fact that he has to have his walk everyday otherwise, as the book says; he is liable to become badly behaved and difficult. Don’t we all! The odd feature about the ‘mixed’ weather we’ve been having is that as miserable as the day might be, the evenings are lovely and therefore perfect for this Cave-woman and her dog to go walkies.

its, I found the first week very hard as I simply had no energy. Michael Phelps, the American swimmer that won in all 14 gold medals in the Olympics, consumes 12,000 calories per day. For a breakfast alone, he has a stack of pancakes, a stack of toast and several eggs. How do you even begin to put that amount of food into your body but I remind myself whatever he’s having, I can’t have. Progress is slow, I have lost only four pounds in the three weeks since I’ve started but on the plus side, I’m never hungry and my energy levels are returning. What also helps is that I got a dog. I must have had a mid life crisis moment but I had this sudden urge to have a small, friendly form of life in the house other than my children. And unlike my children, he doesn’t answer back or ask questions. The toilet training was fraught as I never had a dog before and failed to appreciate that puppies do it everywhere, all the time whether it’s on the grass, the kitchen floor or your best carpet. When he was ten weeks old, I dragged him out for his first walk. I wasn’t going far. It was only to the local shop and back but he went berserk when I put on the lead and refused to go beyond the front gate. Meanly, I dragged him

To mark this and as part of an ongoing research project on the island Cllr Kieran McCarthy will have a historical exhibition on display on people and places in the valley, entitled Voices of the Lee Valley. In addition he will run two short walking tours of the pilgrimage island next Sunday, one at 1pm and the other at 4.30pm (meeting at the exhibition on the island). These tours are free and all are welcome. Cllr McCarthy noted: “The new historical exhibition is one I have been work-shopping with the kind permission of the Diocese of Cork and Ross over a number of days over the last number of weeks. One of the aspects that have become an important strand of my research is the aspect of outreach, that in any landscape research project, one should walk the land and engage with those that respect it. Of all the sites in the Lee valley where participation in its heritage is encouraged as well as reflecting on its deep history is Gougane Barra.”

Regaining Your Youth & Vitality Do you want more vitality and youthfulness in your life? One of the most important things that a person can do in life is to optimize spinal and nervous system function. If the spine and nervous system are not functioning optimally, then it is impossible to have optimal health. There are about 10,000 miles of nerve fiber per cubic inch of brain cortex – that is nearly half the circumference of earth. Amazing! These nerve fibers need to communicate with the body in a free-flowing, uninterrupted way as they control everything that happens. The spine, viewed from the side, should have three smooth flowing curves and should be straight when viewed from the back. Have you heard of subluxation? A subluxation is any kind of shifting, displacement, or misalignment of the vertebrae and the resulting stress or pressure that it places on the nervous system and the associated soft tissues, such as discs. Subluxations suppress nervous system function, create dysfunctional spinal curves, and initiate wear and tear of the spine, thus promoting aging and loss of

vitality. Subluxation could be viewed as a blockage, a bottleneck, or traffic jam in your 270 mph nervous system super highway. What can cause subluxation? Some of the most common causes are from physical stress (trauma) from car accidents, slips, falls, tumbles, sports injuries and even the birthing process itself! Subtle causes that happen every day are major culprits and include repetitive activities, poor posture, sitting for hours in front of a computer and even poor sleeping positions. At our clinic, we specialize in optimizing spinal and nervous system function, and reversing subluxation patterns that have often been present in the body for long periods of time, often since birth or early childhood. An optimum spine creates the ability to experience the youth and vitality you deserve. We do this through our Total Health Spinal System™ which consists of spinal alignment therapy, spinal stabilization, spinal disc therapy, and spinal nutritional consulting. Athlete's foot Athlete's foot is a fungal infection that develops in the moist areas between your toes and sometimes on other parts of your foot. Athlete's foot usually causes itching, stinging and burning. Also called tinea pedis, athlete's foot is closely related to other fungal infections with similar names, which include: • Ringworm of the body (tinea corporis). This form causes a red, scaly ring or circle of rash on the top layer of your skin. • Jock itch (tinea cruris). This form affects your genitals, inner upper thighs and buttocks. • Ringworm of the scalp (tinea

capitis). This form is most common in children and involves red, itchy patches on the scalp, leaving bald patches.

Symptoms

The signs and symptoms of athlete's foot can be numerous, although you probably won't have all of them: • Itching, stinging and burning between your toes • Itching, stinging and burning on the soles of your feet • Itchy blisters • Cracking and peeling skin, especially between your toes and on the soles of your feet • Excessive dryness of the skin on the bottoms or sides of the feet • Toenails that are thick, crumbly, ragged, discolored or pulling away from the nail bed

Treatments and drugs

If athlete's foot is severe or doesn't respond to over-the-counter medicine,

Diabetes, what do I do now?

you may need a prescription-strength topical medication (lotion, powder, spray or ointment) or an oral medication (pill, capsule or tablet). Many options are available, including: Terbinafine (Lamisil) and Clotrimazole (canestan) If your fungal infection is severe or doesn't respond to topical medicine, your GP may give you a prescription oral medication. Oral medications include: Itraconazole (Sporanox), Fluconazole (Diflucan) and Terbinafine (Lamisil).

Prevention

These tips can help you avoid athlete's foot or ease the symptoms if infection occurs: • Keep your feet dry, especially between your toes. Go barefoot to let your feet air out as much as possible when you're home. • Go with natural materials. Wear

We can help you with any health

socks that are made of natural material, such as cotton or wool, or a synthetic fiber designed to draw moisture away from your feet. • Change socks and stockings regularly. If your feet sweat a lot, change your socks twice a day. • Wear light, well-ventilated shoes. Avoid shoes made of synthetic material, such as vinyl or rubber. • Alternate pairs of shoes. This allows time for your shoes to dry. • Protect your feet in public places. Wear waterproof sandals or shower shoes in communal showers, pools, fitness centers and other public areas. • Treat your feet. Use an antifungal powder daily. • Don't borrow shoes. Borrowing risks spreading a fungal infection. For more information contact Garvan at Lynch’s Pharmacy on 0214366923

EPA Urges People in County Cork to Use Certified Operators when Getting Cars Re-sprayed Friday 16th September: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are urging people in County Cork to check that they are using only certified car spraying operators when getting paintwork repaired as these providers are implementing good environmental practices. “If you’re having the paintwork on your car touched up, or having the car re-sprayed, you need to be sure that the operator you are using is fully certified,” says Dr. Ian Marnane, Air Enforcement Manager, EPA. “Car paints contain highly volatile compounds which can be very harmful to the environment and to health if they are not properly handled. That’s why you have to be sure that the garage or operator you are going to is certified. Cer-

tified operators have made an appropriate investment to ensure that they are protecting the environment and people’s health.” The re-spraying of cars is regulated to minimise harmful effects on our environment and health. It is now a legal requirement for those providing re-spraying services to be environmentally compliant. Uncertified body shops are operating illegally and should be avoided. Car paint contains Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) which can evaporate into our atmosphere, even at room temperature. This can cause respiratory illness in both animals and humans and have potentially harmful effects on our environment. Re-sprayers are required to register

The EPA is pleased that there is now growing awareness of the issue and a growing number of certified operators in all counties. “It is important that in County Cork you support certified vehicle refinishers,” says Dr. Marnane. “These businesses have made the appropriate investment to ensure that they are operating in an environmentally friendly way. You have the re-assurance of knowing that they – and you – are preventing harm to the environment and potentially to the health of humans

and animals.” The number of certified operators has grown in the last two years. In January 2010 there were a total of 700 certified operators throughout the country with 41 of these being in County Cork. Local authorities pursue and prosecute uncertified operators and encourage those who are uncertified to register immediately. A number of successful prosecutions have been taken against uncertified operators and those convicted face a fine of up to €3,000 and / or jail time of up to one year. Think about a host of golden daffodils in the spring – now is the time to plant bulbs. But don’t stop there . Plant crocus, snowdrops, bluebells, tulips, hyacinths for a beautiful spring garden. As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week. Flower Garden Dig up early chrysanthemums, cut down stems and box up the stools; keep in a cold frame until January. Finish bringing in tender perennials, and box or pot up to keep under frost-free glass. Plant new pinks and hardy carnations on light soils - elsewhere wait until spring. Plant new rhododendrons and azaleas in acid soil, and mulch with cocoa shells. Plant container grown shrubs and trees in prepared soil, but leave bareroot plants until next month. Kitchen Garden Start taking hardwood cuttings of soft fruit such as gooseberries and currants, and root outdoors. Clear outdoor tomato crops or lay plants on straw and cover with cloches to finish ripening. Mix all summer lettuce varieties together with endive, chicory and other salads for sowing as a cutand-come again mixture. Cover vacant light soil with a protective layer of manure or compost, or dig and sow a green manure.

Earth up winter leeks for extralong blanched stems. If runner beans are still cropping, feed with general fertiliser Lawns & Hedges Lay turf on new lawn sites. Spike lawns and scarify with a wire rake or hired machine, if not done already. Greenhouse Plant parsley in a greenhouse bed or cold frame for winter supplies.. Disbud late-flowering chrysanthemums to stimulate larger blooms. Start to reduce watering and damping down generally, and water in the mornings only. Sow greenhouse radishes to crop in late November. Water Garden Net ponds to keep falling tree leaves from fouling the water. Continue dividing bog and marginal plants for a week or two - after that wait until spring. In General Before ordering seeds check through old stocks, retaining the

most recent. Test soils with a pH kit,. and make plants to adjust acidity levels where necessary.

This Friday and Saturday sees Foil, Arms and Hog taking to the stage at the City Limits Comedy Club. Ross Brown will MC the nights. Foil, Arms and Hog’s blend of bizarre, ridiculous and surreal sketches have made them one of the country’s most popular comedy acts. The all-male, three piece, Dublin based, cymbal smashing sketch group are now an established act at festivals around Ireland and the UK. The trio have headlined the Carlsberg Comedy Festival and Electric Picnic, they have sold-out Edinburgh Comedy Festival shows in 2010 and 2011. Tickets are €15 and doors are 20:30. This Saturday JD Events presents GMC live at harlequins sports complex. Doors are 19:30 and runs until 23:00. The event is strictly under 18s and tickets are €10. Snow Patrol have announced the release date for their new album, as well as confirming some live dates in Ireland. The sixth Snow Patrol album - Fallen Empires - will be released on 11th November. The 14 track collection, Gary Lightbody said, is a departure from their previous work and takes considerable cues from the likes of LCD Soundsystem and Arcade Fire. You'll have a chance to see all these changes for yourself when Lightbody and co. take to the stage in Dublin's O2 on 21st January next and in Belfast two days later at the Odyssey on 23rd September. Tickets for the O2 are priced at €44.05 and the Odyssey at £33. Tickets are on sale tomorrow. Charlie Sheen apologised to his Two And A Half Men castmates at the Emmy Awards last night. The actor, who was fired from the hit US sitcom after falling out with creator Chuck Lorre, wished his former co-stars "the best" when presenting the award for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series, which he called his "old category." Speaking on stage during the ceremony at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre, Sheen said: "I want to take a moment to get something off my chest and say a few words to everybody here from Two And A Half Men." He continued: "From the bottom of my heart, I wish you nothing but the best for this

upcoming season. We spent eight wonderful years together…and I know you will continue to make great television." The 46-year old actor has since been replaced by Ashton Kutcher in the show, with Charlie's ex-castmate Jon Cryer revealing: "I'm already converted to the cult of Ashton. I like him. He's younger, taller - it's totally different." Kutcher later joked when presenting the gong for Outstanding Supporting Actress and Best Writing in a Drama Series: "I am not Charlie Sheen. And Jon, I want to tell you something. I do not think you are a troll." Modern Family and Downton Abbey were the big winners on the night, with the UK's very own Kate Winslet walking away with the Best Actress in a lead role accolade for Mildred Pierce Snoop Dogg is to star in the lead role in The Legend of Fillmore Slim, a biopic about the blues musician and pimp. The movie, largely set in the sixties and seventies, follows the life of Fillmore Slim, real name Clarence Sims, who is now 77. He rose to fame as a blues singer and guitarist but was also well known in San Francisco as a pimp and was nicknamed ‘The West Coast Godfather of the Game’ and ‘The Pope of Pimping’. The Drop It Like It’s Hot rapper previously appeared in Training Day and Starsky & Hutch but this is his first lead role. He will age as the film progresses through the musician’s extraordinary life. Producer Alan Ames said: "This film will span decades, from Slim's emergence as a musician, to his fascination with the fast life, through his years of incarceration and his redemption." Filming for The Legend of Fillmore Slim begins in March. Snoop is also in the running for the lead role in a new US sitcom. The multitalented star is in talks to play the father in the as-yet-untitled series, according to reports. The show is being developed by the team behind Two And A Half Men and Everybody Hates Chris. Its come out that Kanye West tried to launch a Muppets-style comedy puppet show. The show, called Alligator Boots, never made it past the pilot stage but a 'best of' video has hit the

PROCESS BEGINS FOR PAY PARKING IN CARRIGALINE Cork County Council begins the process of pay parking in Carrigaline. At the September roads meeting, Councillors where presented with the draft bye-laws for the introduction of pay parking. As part of the byelaw process, members of the public will get a chance to air their view. If implemented pay meters will be introduced on all of the main streets in Carrigaline. Cllr. Boyle says, “Over the coming weeks the public will get a chance to object to this plan for pay parking in the Carrigaline area. It is important that people are aware of the process and make their views heard if they are against this proposal”. As part of the process all stake holders will be informed which will include the Garda and all the relevant agencies. Once the period of public consultation is over, the manager will produce a report which will include the response to public concerns. Councillors will consider the responses from the public, the County Manager and will vote on whether to implement the bye-laws. Cllr. Boyle continues,” Is this really the right time for the consideration of pay parking in Carrigaline. People are suffering financially and will find it hard to pay extra money for the privilege of going for a 30 minute shop”. Cork County Council recently voted to implement pay parking in Douglas. Meters are expected to be installed in Douglas in December with the intention of having the scheme up and going in January. Cllr. Boyle finishes,” I strongly objected to the introduction of pay parking in Douglas and will continue this stance in Carrigaline”.

Minor Championship: The premier minor county football championship reaches a climax next Sunday evening when Douglas take on favourites Ballincollig in the final at the Cork Institute of Technology grounds. Douglas secured their place in the decider with victory over Nemo Rangers in the semi-final but have been struck down with a succession of injuries since then. Definitely out of contention is midfielder Paul Fitzgerald who sustained a serious injury in the recent under 21 hurling final. Thanks to its successful under-age structures Douglas is producing a steady stream of talented individuals who look set for promising careers at senior grade. In many peoples eyes Fitzgerald is the cream of the crop and his quality performances have been a feature of Douglas’ route to the final. However, there is no shortage of leaders in this team and their efforts will be needed more than ever if Douglas are to taste victory. Throw in at C.I.T. is scheduled for 6pm on Sunday 25th September. Club Pavilion: You are more than welcome to join us in the club bar where all major sporting events are televised on big screen and where there is live music every weekend. Also, the social committee is now accepting bookings in the club bar or hall for functions during 2011. Therefore, if you wish to consider Douglas G.A.A. Club as the venue for your party, please contact Margaret on (087) 9956050 for information.

Under 12 Premier Division Carrigaline 2 Corinthian Boys 1 Carrigaline started the better but after 10 min Corinthians got control of the game and deservedly went in 1-0 up thanks to a fine strike by Jaze Kabia after a good ball by Adam Coleman. The second half was more even with both sides creating chances and Carrigaline scoring a fine volley to level things and with about 10 min to go scored what proved to be the winner. Nathan O Donnell, Niall Murphy played well. Under 13 Premier Division Corinthian Boys A 2 Leeside Knockraha 1 Corinthian’s came from behind to claim all three points in this entertaining league clash. Chris Healy was the hero when he got on the end of a David Nason cross to clinch the points for Corinthians late on. David O’ Keeffe, Conor Shalloe and Oisin Lucais did well for Corinthians. Leeds 0 Corinthian Boys 0 Corinthians will feel it was more like two points dropped than one point gained having totally controlled this game from start to finish. Corinthians had the ball in the net three times only to have all three adjudged off side. Credit to Leeds they made it difficult for the Corinthians attack and their keeper was in top form pulling off some magnificant saves from Bryan Hill, Eoin Davis and Arseni Lamonov. Eoin Murphy also came close with two free kicks from just outside the box. Corinthians were unlucky not to have grabbed the winner in the final seconds when James O'Donovan floated in a free kick from the left that was met by the head of James Holland

only to have it stopped again on the line by the Leeds keeper. However, it was another clean sheet for Corinthians who will be looking for a big response from the lads next week to get themselves back on track. There were also good performances Under 14 Premier Division Corinthian Boys 4 Ballincollig 3 Ballincollig took a shock 3-0 lead after 20 minutes, after some very poor defending. Corinthians were by far the better team and showed their determination, when on the stroke of half time pulled a goal back, after some great passing phases David Dalton found Harry Shanahan who powered the ball passed the Ballincollig keeper leaving the half time score 1-3. Corinthians started the second half very strong and were rewarded for their dominance when after 15 minutes Bryan Cotter found David Dalton inside the box who headed the ball into the goal, 5 minutes later Dean Swords corner found David Dalton who headed in for his second goal levelling the game 3-3. With 10 minutes remaining after enormous pressure inside the Ballincollig goal mouth the ball broke to Colin O Brien who smashed the ball into the top corner, from the edge of the box, leaving the final score 4-3. Corinthians showed their true character and desire in abundance with this massive hard fought well deserved victory. Stephen Jermyn, Jack Murray, (Alex O Driscoll 52 mins) Mark O Leary, (Dean Swords 55 mins), Sean Desmond, (David Lynch 50 mins) David O Regan, Ross Welch, Keenan O Flynn, Bryan Cotter, David Dalton, ( Gavin Holland 52 mins) Harry Shanahan, Colin O Brien

The Hall lost their unbeaten start to the season despite taking an early lead through Mara Burke with his first goal of the season. ,a defender deflected the ball into his own net. The hosts continued to attack after the break and Padraigh Hickey doubled their advantage with a great finish. The visitors got one back mid way through the second half but victory was clinched following some fine performances from Colm Kennedy, Ethan Bevin and Alan Manning.

Douglas Hall started the better in this game but were caught with a sucker punch when Park scored from outside the box. Douglas got the equaliser when After Ronan McCarthy cancelled the visitors opener, Fionn O'Connor put an excellent cross into the box which deceived the keeper and ended up in the net for the winning goal. Excellent performances for the Hall came from David Barry and Eoghan O'Leary.

G.A.A. FOCUS Snippets from the Local and National Scene By Pat Harrington Galway Hurlers Galway hurlers have finished the year with a flourish. In the space of eight days they have brushed aside the challenge of Dublin minors and under 21s with consummate ease. To be fair Galway have been very successful at these levels for a number of years. The 64,000 dollar question is why can they not replicate this success at senior level? It is now almost a quarter of a century since Liam McCarthy rested west of the Shannon. I just can’t figure the reason why they have failed to lift this trophy, and here I would like to ask some questions: Are the clubs pulling in different directions? Are the younger players too accustomed to success? Have the players not got the stomach for battle at senior level? Perhaps the players while still at underage level are put on a pedestal and have lost the run of themselves, or is Galway hurling not good enough when push comes to shove? Really, my last sentence was written with tongue in cheek, as I honestly believe the westerners have the ability. What is lacking I don’t know. Cork County Hurling Final What odds would the bookmakers have offered on a Carrigtwohill vs. C.I.T. county final? Carrigtwohill would have been viewed as contenders for relegation. Over the last few years they have been rather familiar with the drop zone. However their last two games against east Cork opposition has shown them to be a team with great character. Local derbies are the most difficult to win but Carrig proved their mettle in both games played.

C.I.T. have a talented bunch of players and will start as favourites, but underestimate the east Cork side at your peril! Underage I have long been of the opinion that up to 12 years of age kids should be playing strictly with the fun element in mind; there should be no such thing as labelling teams A or B. We should have teams with a mixture of good and very good players. Some lads for example may be seen as weak at 8 or 9 years but there is no doubt that these players will improve with coaching, along with the effort that must be put in by the players themselves. I have seen some of the better players at this age level fall back in standards because they do not apply the required effort in training. Hurling Blitz Last week the Douglas club, among others travelled to Blackrock to participate in an under 9 blitz. Each club fielded three teams of 11 players. This proved to be a wonderful exercise, a most enjoyable event and a real fun morning. National Hurling League There is controversy at the moment surrounding the new format for the National League. The top 12 teams play in two sections of six. Counties are complaining about a lack of games. Limerick who were promoted last year are very annoyed because they are in the second tier. They rightly want to be playing against the top teams in the country and they feel that the format proposed will impair their progress as a hurling force. The new format was not very well thought out and needs to be readdressed.

Pfizer Pitch&Putt by Brendan Hayes Wednesday night results: Wednesday night saw the active return of Richard Flaherty to club competition, Richie had taken three months out to spend some quality time with the family so now he was eager for a game. Richie was drawn as anchor man in 1/2 combined stroke competition, he went on to score two hole in ones the second was at the 12th which was the hole selected by the club for the hole in one competition, he also won the nett and the Gross with his partners, so there is a moral to this story somewhere, I just have not figured it out yet. (maybe it’s the customised club shorts he insists on wearing). Results as follows: 1st nett 38 1/2 points Richie Flaherty /John Callnan 1gr Richie Flaherty /Charlie Morrissey -12 2nd nett 39 1/2 points Ger O Sullivan/ Kevin Murphy 26 - Thur 22 Sept '11

TRAMORE ATHLETIC AFC Umbro U14 Division 1 Tramore Athletic 3 Wilton United 0 The Tramore Athletic U14s continued their winning start to the new league season when they defeated Wilton United by three goals to nil at Tramore Park on Sunday morning. Tramore adapted better to the difficult blustery conditions and used their ascendancy in terms of possession and territory to create a host of chances particularly in the first half. Tramore's superiority was rewarded through goals from Andrew Turner, Cian Fitton and Alan O'Reilly to give Tramore a deserved victory. The Tramore Athletic U15s maintained their own unbeaten start to the league season when they drew one-all with local rivals College Corinthians at Tramore Park on Saturday. The Tramore Athletic U12s A team smashed in six goals for the second consecutive match in League 3 this season when they defeated Glounthaune United by six goals to nil on Saturday morning at Tramore Park. Unfortunately in League 2 the Tramore Athletic U12s suffered an ill-deserved defeat away to Kanturk on Saturday by three goals to one. However Tramore will take great encouragement from a performance that deserved at least a share of the spoils from this match. The Tramore Athletic Soccertots training camp continues this Sunday morning in Tramore Park from 10am for boys and girls aged 6-10. Learn new football skills in a fun and friendly atmosphere under the watchful supervision of qualified coaches.
