Pedal Power For a number of months now I have been cycling seriously to keep up a level of fitness, apart from playing basketball, and this usually means a 12k cycle in the mornings at 6.30am but as the days getting shorter with the onset of winter, it’s more like 7am these mornings. It’s a fantastic time of day to cycle the old railway line from Blackrock to Passage or along the foreshore from Blackrock Castle to Rochestown, as the world wakes up and the huge flocks of different wading birds go about their business in the Douglas Estuary and Loughmahon. One morning this week I was on my cycle near Jacobs Island when I caught the sun rise above the horizon, it was a wonderful moment and as I always carry a camera (even a pocket camera when on the bike), I was able capture the moment. I must say that I find cycling a great way to get fit and stay healthy and there is a scheme for companies to encourage employees to cycle to work – for details check with your local bicycle shop. The Douglas Post will be doing a feature on cycling shortly so watch this space to see the benefits of pedal power and some of the equipment available while taking you through some of the rules, laws and highway code regarding cycling.

Frisbee This weekend 11 teams from 8 different clubs from all over Ireland will travel to Cork to play at UCC's outdoor sports facility, The Farm, Bishopstown to compete in the Open Division (Men's) All-Ireland Club Championship. The tournament is over two days with teams playing at least six 90 minute games on four pitches. Games are scheduled to start at 9.30am and will run until 17.00 both days.

Families Should Not Be Deprived Of Their Home No family should loses their house due to inability to pay their mortgage and Government should establish this as a fundamental principle of its policy in relation to housing and distressed mortgages in cases where a family makes an honest effort to pay their mortgage. To date the Government has indeed introduced alleviation measures which have worked to a point - a two year moratorium; deferred payments; interest only payments; mortgage interest supplement. However, present measures are not adequate to deal with this increasing problem and the circumstances faced by homeowners struggling to pay their mortgages. In response I believe that there is need for a safety net for such families, over and above what is available where the other avenues have been exhausted. For example it should be possible to go to a Personal Debt Management Agency. This Agency should have the legal powers to provide protection from the creditors of families and homeowners with distressed mortgages so that no family home is repossessed and the family members left homeless. "It should have the legal authority to buy time to sort out financial affairs and to pursue other avenues including personal bankruptcy for those who have made every effort to resolve their financial difficulties. We live in difficult times and austerity measures are necessary but retention of the family home must be a red line for this Government.

• 34 climbers set off to climb Ireland’s highest peak on Sunday in aid of Build 4 Life, a charity that are trying to build an isolation unit at CUH for children with Cystic Fibrosis. Despite the horrible weather everyone made it up and down safely. A follow up fund-raiser night is planned for the South County Bar on Friday 7th. October.

New bus stops to help hundreds of workers Cork South Central Fine Gael TD Jerry Buttimer has said that bus stops at University Technology Park should be in place within a matter of months. Deputy Buttimer received confirmation of the developments from Bus Éireann in response to a letter to the authority. Deputy Buttimer said “for over a year Bus Éireann, Cork City and Cork County Council towards introducing bus stops at University Technology Park. The issues of land ownership, Garda permission and funding have now been addressed and it is expected that these bus stops will be in place within a matter of months. “The businesses in University Technology Park provide employment for a large number of people, one company alone employs about 800. For years there has been no direct public transport link to their place of work, new bus stops at this location will be improve accessibility and help hundreds of workers. If we are to encourage public transport use we must provide direct links to their place of work "Bus Eireann has also extended the number eight service to continue to the relocated Marymount Hospice which has opened at Curraheen. This will facilitate the many people who visit and use the services offered by Marymount."

Billy McCarthy is a founder member of the Douglas Writers Group and has recently launched his first book entitled “Barnetstown to Ballinglanna”. The book is a selection of short stories and poems taken from his earliest experiences in life to the present day. He even includes two poems by his son Pádraig and two by his granddaughter Ciara. Billy writes in a style that is worthy of any tradition Irish writer and yet has all the modernity of the present day. Our poem this week taken from his book is a fine example of Billy’s lyricism. Sweet Ballinglanna Of Sweet Ballinglanna tonight I am Dreaming, My thoughts ever winging ‘way back to the time, When youthful and merry we crossed o’er the ferry, As the sound of soft music came over the brine. We joined in gay dances and later went roaming, The fishermen homing we passed on the way, The moonlight was shining, no wonder I’m pining For Sweet Ballinglanna in exile today. Now my heart still returns down the road by the meadow Where we strayed ‘neath the moonlight before we did part Where the shimmering wavelets sweep over the shingle On Sweet Ballinglanna, the queen of my heart Oh, pride of my homeland your memories still haunt me, In dreams how they taunt me wherever I roam, For though I may wander in exile, I ponder, And still I grow fonder of my dear old home. Now to think of the evenings we spent by your waters Making our plans as we strolled hand—in-hand, Those times are long gone but we’ll always remember Your dark towering cliffs and your bright golden sand. Out and About with Fergus O’Leary Monday a week ago I was sitting in a cab heading for the airport to come home from Rome and it was the last thing I wanted to be doing. I would have done nearly anything to be able to tell the driver to turn round and take us back. I think that Rome is the most beautiful place. Firstly you have, of course, Ancient Rome. The Ancient Romans claimed that their city was founded in the six hundreds BC which, even allowing for a degree of imagination, means a constant occupation of two and a half millennia and the evidence of most of this is there before your eyes. The Coliseum, the Forum and the Palatine Hill all speak volumes for their ingenuity ( they invented concrete, of which the Coliseum is built ) their power and their artistry. Then of course there is the splendour of St. Peters Basilica, every inch of it displaying objects of breathtaking beauty, each a testament to mankind’s creative genius, especially when inspired by religious devotion. The Sistine chapel is worth the queuing, all the more so because of the splendid Vatican Museum. Then there are the piazzas. High Baroque architecture, fountains and cobbled pavements all under a bright sun and a clear blue sky. Then there are the buildings that are of both Ancient and modern Rome. The Pantheon, once a temple to all the pagan gods of Rome, now a church dedicated to Our Lady and full of lovely devotional objects. Or the Castel Sant’ Angelo, built by

Hadrian as his mausoleum, then taken over by the papacy for use as a fortress, then as a prison. The views over the city from the castle are stupendous. Just as attractive are the Victorian streets and squares. Fine five or six storey apartment buildings, the squares built around public gardens growing date palms and exotic shrubs. The most memorable thing, though is the buzz, crowds of people all enjoying their visit to the Eternal City. If you haven’t been to Rome, go. It won’t cost you any more than a trip to the Canaries and you will see a place that is unforgettable and incomparable.

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a condition where you develop symptoms of depression in the darker winter months each year. Light therapy for seasonal affective disorder This treatment consists of sitting in front of a special bright light for a session each day and/or using a dawn simulator. Light intensity is measured in lux. Ordinary light bulbs are not strong enough as they only give out 200-500 lux. To treat SAD you need a light source of at least 2500 lux (about 10 times that of ordinary light bulbs). This will be for one night only while the GAA hall is busy and will return to the GAA next week. Flower Garden Move established peonies very carefully by the end of the month. Start taking hardwood cuttings of roses, and root in a sheltered bed. Lift dahlias as soon as the foliage blackens; cut down the stems, and stand upside down indoors to drain for a fortnight. Collect ripe seeds from perennials, dry and store. Prepare new rose beds, digging and weeding the ground thoroughly and adding plenty of manure or compost.

Those were some of the remarks made by people after the Kerry vs. Dublin all-Ireland football final. The remarks were directed at the defeated Kerry team. One could well say they are the remarks of jealous Rebels. Of course Cork football has suffered at the hands of Kerry in Croke Park more than any other county in the last decade. On the day I shouted for The Dubs, my view being that Kerry had won enough. This game may not have been a classic but it was compelling viewing. Two of Gooch’s scores were absolutely superb; the goal was sublime. As the game progressed the intensity was huge, and the drama as the encounter entered the final eight minutes was unreal. At this stage Kerry fans were planning the

A brace of goals each from Nathan O Donnell, Colin O Mahony, Rory Doyle and Mark Cronin and one each from Niall Murphy, Jaze Kabia sealed the win in difficult conditions. Midleton 3 Corinthian Boys A 2 Corinthian Boys B 3 Douglas Hall A 1 It’s onto the next round of the National Cup for the boys as they took control of this tie from the start to continue their impressive form so far this season. Daniel Hurley on the left and Paul Barry on the right were proving to be a handful for the Douglas Hall defence and with great delivery from both into the box it was always only a matter of time before the boys got off the mark and captain Karl Hyde duly obliged finishing exquisitely with his first opportunity. Dylan Virgo doubled the boys lead soon after with a thunderbolt shot that left the Douglas Hall keeper rooted to the spot. The boys made it three on the 40 minute mark when new signing Davie Scott with his first touch after coming on as sub drilled a cross into the box that deflected off a defender and nestled into the top corner. Scott again went close just after with

a deft chip over the keeper that unluckily found the side netting. Douglas Hall got one back before the end when Liam McCarthy in goal who had been faultless all day failed to collect a ball that skidded off the turf and across the line. He more than made up for it moments later however with a series of saves that kept the game beyond the opposition. Great performances also from Joe Cremin and Adam Walsh at the back for the boys.

Under 15 National Cup Corinthian Boys 3 Everton 2 The U15 Division 1 team came out on the right side of 3-2 thriller at Castletreasure in the National Cup on Saturday against a gallant Everton side. Corinthians started brightly and soon went into the lead when Barry O’Callaghan reacted quickest to tap home from five yards after a good save from the Everton keeper. Douglas 0-10 Ballincollig 1-07 Premier Minor County Football Championship Final A dramatic comeback by a spirited Douglas team denied favourites Ballincollig the coveted premier minor county football championship title at Pairc uí Rinn last Sunday evening. Denied the services of Paul Fitzgerald and Seán Healy through injury Douglas’ luck seemed to have completely dissipated when Seán Collins joined the injury list at the interval. However, it is to the credit of the Douglas players that despite setback after setback they refuse to accept every convenient excuse to fade away and instead have doubled their efforts and fought to remain in the competition. With ten minutes remaining Ballincollig led by five points and Douglas looked dead and buried. However, Douglas stepped on the gas and the increased intensity was best characterised by Ronan Whyte, Eric O’Connor and Caolan Mulrooney, each of whom raced forward towards the heart of the Ballincollig back line. Meanwhile, Brian Lenihan came in and succeeded in occupying the Ballincollig defence which allowed captain Alan Cadogan more freedom to profit from the direct deliveries from his team mates. Paul Beale fielded a few vital balls and Seán Fogarty and Cadogan kicked points. The Douglas management introduced Adrian O’Connell and this proved to be an inspired substitution. the stage was set as Douglas needed a saviour. Unfazed by what was at stake O’Connell kicked two points, Josh Kra added another deep into injury time and Douglas live to fight another day.

Everton were on top at this stage and with the benefit of a stiff breeze they lay siege to the Corinthian goal for the remainder of the first half. Corinthians were lucky to go in a goal up at half time. Corinthians however got back on top in the second half and pulled two goals clear when Sean Powter finished well after a great run from Liam O’Sullivan. Everton kept fighting to the end and they reduced the deficit to one with minutes to go following a free conceded by Corinthians on the half way line. It was too late however and the referee blew for full time shortly afterwards much to the relief of Corinthians. Best for Corinthians on the day were Sam Collins, Sean Powter and Barry O’Callaghan while Brian Barry had a great second half following a shaky start.

Wednesday night was Templebreedys Presidents Prize no results at hand. Friday evening Juvenile competition results as follows. Section A 1st David Howard 45 points 2nd James Maher 42 points winning back 9 3rd Joshua De Nijs 42 points Section B 1st Ruairi Mehigan 45 points 2nd Michael Hammett 38 points 3rd Robert Slevin 37 points. Next week 30 September will be the last of the Friday evening Juvenile games and this is a 5,20pm tee off. Sunday 2nd October is the clubs stroke play competition tee off 9,30am and its a 36 hole competition.(question is ? will Willie Mullane be able to defend his title) Keep an eye on this space for info on the clubs up and comming AGM.

U14 National Cup Strand United 0 Tramore Athletic 4 The Tramore Athletic U14s maintained their exceptional early season form when they progressed into the next round of the U14 National Cup by defeating Strand United by four goals to nil on Sunday morning. Tramore's victory was built on rock solid displays from their defence and in particular Daniel Cullen’s intelligent passing in midfield which gave a

fluency and fluidity to Tramore’s attacking play which a spirited Strand side could not withstand. Tramore's deserved passage to the next round was achieved through goals from Andrew Turner, Ross Drummond and a brace from Alan O'Reilly. The Tramore Athletic U15s maintained their own hugely impressive start to the season when they also progressed through to the next round of the U15 National Cup when defeating Rathcoole Rovers by five goals to nil at Tramore Park on Saturday morning.

The Tramore Athletic U13s made it a hattrick of National Cup victories for Tramore schoolboys’ teams when they marched into the next round with a memorable nine goals to one away win at Mayfield United A on Saturday morning.
