Cycle to Work Scheme sees 90,000 Bikes Purchased since 2009 Following on from my column last week and the benefits of I cycling, the Irish Bicycle Business Association (IBBA) today launched its first report on the Cycle to Work scheme which was introduced in 2009. The report underlines the many successes of the scheme, with more people than ever now cycling to work. In addition to the environmental and health benefits of this initiative, significant spin offs for domestic tourism, charitable fundraising, job creation and various other economic benefits were highlighted and quantified in the report. The IBBA was set up this year and represents the key stakeholders in the bicycle industry, which is worth over €100m per annum. David Walsh of the IBBA said, “The most important aim of the Cycle to Work scheme was to encourage people to leave their cars behind and cycle to work. With 90,000 bicycles purchased in the last two years through the scheme, we can safely say that this has happened.” Padraig Ryan, transport co-ordinator for Temple Street Children’s University Hospital, a company that participates in the Cycle to Work scheme said, “Since 2009 we have seen a 450% increase in the number of staff cycling to work, coinciding with a 44% reduction in the number of staff driving. This could not have been achieved without the Cycle to Work scheme. It has made Children’s University Hospital a more accessible place for all concerned.” Health Benefits Regular cyclists take on average one less sick day per year according to a study by the London School of • Cork hopefuls Sandra Murphy and Peter Nielsen who will battle it out against 16 other contestants in TV3's "The Apprentice" which returns to our screens next Monday night. Economics. It is estimated that the Cycle to Work Photo Billy macGill scheme has saved the economy €15.3 million a year in absenteeism. George Thompson Editor

West Cork Inspires An exhibition on 50 Years of Studio Craft In West Cork Cork Public Museum, Fitzgerald Park, Mardyke Walk, Cork. From October 7th until January 14th 2012. World Ghost Convention The World Ghost Convention, which is the first of its kind in the world, is an event that may capture the attention of many who are curious about all things supernatural. Officially opened each year by the Right Honourable Lord Mayor of Cork, it provides an ideal opportunity for the many people fascinated with the supernatural to hear a colourful assortment of supernatural topics explored by speakers
from different backgrounds and professions. In addition, those who have experienced supernatural occurrences have the chance to share their own personal supernatural experiences if they so wish as well as hear firsthand the accounts of others who echo similar experiences. The magnificent Cork City Gaol where the 11th World Ghost Convention will be held on Friday, October 28th next is a splendid atmospheric setting for such a unique Convention as it has its own resident ghosts which have been seen by members of the audience and speakers since the first Ghost Convention was established in 2001. Cork South Central Fine Gael TD Jerry Buttimer has said that the National Transport Authority, as part of the Real Time Passenger Information programme, is to deliver 50 signs in Cork City by the end of this year. Deputy Buttimer received the information in a reply to a Parliamentary Question to the Minister for Transport asking about the roll out of the RTPI programme outside of Dublin. Deputy Buttimer said “the Minster for Public Transport and Community has informed me that the Real Time Passenger Information programme will reach Cork by the end of this year. As part of the rollout 50 RTPI signs will be erected, giving bus passenger real time information of when the next bus will arrive. It will be much more convenient to use busses in Cork when this system is operating. “The system is already operational in Dublin and gives people certainty when they are waiting for busses. “The plan is to have a test sign in place in October and to have the remaining signs installed by the end of the year. As Cork is the first city to get this system using Bus Éireann data target dates are subject to delivery of interfaces allowing Automatic Vehicle Location to communicate with the Real Time system. “The expansion of this system has been made possible by Ministerial Order to provide RTPI to Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford. At first they system will only work with Bus Éireann data but it is expected to be open to private operators next year. “Delivering RTPI to Cork is a signal of the Government’s commitment to the city. The N25 upgrade is one of only 6 national roads projects going ahead this year and now Cork is getting the first Bus Éireann RTPI.”

Simon Communities National Conference. This is Simon Week, a national awareness campaign hosted annually by the Simon Communities and it will involve a wide range of events and activities at a local, regional and national level. Opening the conference Deputy Ciarán Lynch said: “It is an honour and pleasure to launch this conference which aims to increase awareness of homelessness and associated issues in Ireland. Homelessness, whether it is people sleeping rough or in emergency accommodation or in insecure or unsafe housing, continues to be a major concern in Ireland.” Deputy Lynch added, “People sleeping rough on our streets is just the visible and more extreme side of homelessness. Aside from the awful situation of not having a roof over their heads, sleeping rough on the streets or living in emergency accommodation, homelessness has more insidious and wide-ranging impacts on people’s health, whether it is their physical health or their mental health due to the lack of safety, lack of belonging and lack of privacy.” Concluding his comments Ciarán Lynch TD said, “While I am heartened that the current funding allocation for the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government for the provision of homeless accommodation services this year is being kept at the high level of €53.413 million, we cannot afford to be complacent in dealing with homelessness and the causes of homelessness. We must ensure that the funding is allocated effectively to help end homelessness.”

Poetry Corner Ballinlough Community News with Ronnie McGinn
Every good poem has a life of its own, it’s peculiar atmosphere, flavour, emotional key. The appreciation of one poem does not help us much in the appreciation of others, except to foster a general taste for poetry and a desire for more. The only way to acquire a love of poetry is to read poems. Gerard Coughlan who has previously lightened our dull recessional days with a lovely thought inspiring and hopeful poems like “Morning-coffee in Douglas” and the delightful “Spring” sent us this week’s poem which should tickle our brains and make us want to read it again. I KNEW A MAN I knew a man Who was considered “daft” In old age; He wore bright orange shortsEven in WinterAnd whistled constantly Like a throttle In a cage. Many who passed Threw him a curious glance But they failed to notice How the blue of his eyes Conveyed the merriment of dance And his mind Had perception Which scorned pretence And yearned for the gold Of true intelligence. He’s gone from this world now A number of years. Only a lucky few Recall him And I am one of those Because I have inherited His tendency to whistle And his unique take on clothes. Gerard Coughlan. Send your poem to ‘The Poetry Corner’ / Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas or you can email it direct to ronniemcginn@ eircom.net. If possible keep your poem to 20 lines. You may choose any subject you like, in any form you like as long as it’s original. We look forward to hearing from you. RonnieMcGinn

Can Pain Be Reduced or Eliminated Naturally? Last week I wrote about foods and herbs that have natural antiinflammatory properties. This week’s topic is glucosamine sulphate and methylsulphonylmethane (MSM), which both have natural antiinflammatory and pain relieving properties. In a number of trials, glucosamine sulphate has proven more effective than ibuprofen and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in relieving the inflammation and pain of osteoarthritis, without the adverse side effects often associated with NSAID use. Some of the symptoms associated with osteoarthritis are caused by the degeneration of cartilage glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). NSAIDs will often suppress the symptoms, however, the downside is that they also inhibit cartilage repair and accelerate cartilage damage. Glucosamine sulphate, which is found in high concentrations in joint structures, is
important for cartilage GAG synthesis and promoting joint repair. To get more MSM from your foods, eat fresh raw organic vegetables and fruits. MSM is easily lost when foods are heated, processed or are not fresh. MSM potentiates the action of many nutrients, including vitamin C. Healthy skin, hair, bones, joints, muscles, and cartilage, as well as optimal cellular energy production, enzyme function and cellular permeability require a certain level of the third most abundant mineral in the body, sulphur. The flexible sulphur bonds help to maintain a youthful appearance and optimal cellular function. Additionally, MSM is an effective pain killer, muscle relaxant, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant; it can also help heal scars. To learn more, read the book, “The Miracle of MSM” by Stanley Jacob, MD. Learn more by attending my wellness presentation, “Creating Boundless Energy” on Wed. Oct. 12th, 2011

Common cold The common cold is a viral infection of your upper respiratory tract — your nose and throat. A common cold is usually harmless, although it may not feel that way. If it's not a runny nose, sore throat and cough, it's the watery eyes, sneezing and congestion — or maybe all of the above. In fact, because any one of more than 100 viruses can cause a common cold, signs and symptoms tend to vary greatly. Preschool children are at greatest risk of frequent colds, but even healthy adults can expect to have a few colds each year.
How do I handle mum’s Alzheimer’s?
Most people recover from a common cold in about a week or two. If symptoms don't improve, see your doctor.
Symptoms Symptoms of a common cold usually appear about one to three days after exposure to a cold-causing virus. Signs and symptoms of a common cold may include: Runny or stuffy nose, Itchy or sore throat, Cough, Congestion, Slight body aches or a mild headache, Sneezing, Watery eyes, Low-grade fever and Mild fatigue.
Seek medical attention if you have: Fever of 103 F (39.4 C) or higher Fever accompanied by sweating, chills and a cough with colored phlegm Significantly swollen glands
Diabetes, what do I do now?
Severe sinus pain
Treatments There's no cure for the common cold. Over-the-counter (OTC) cold preparations won't cure a common cold, but will ease the symptoms. Pain relievers. For fever, sore throat and headache, many people turn to paracetamol or other mild pain relievers. Decongestant nasal sprays. Adults shouldn't use decongestant drops or sprays for more than a few days because prolonged use can cause chronic rebound inflammation of mucous membranes. Cough syrups. These treat both dry and chesty coughs.

Historical Walking Tour of St. Finbarre’s Hospital On next Monday, 10 October, 12.30pm , Cllr Kieran McCarthy, in association with the staff of St Finbarr's Hospital, will give a public historical walking tour of the hospital grounds (meet at gate). The walk is free and all are welcome. It is about an hour in duration. When the Irish Poor Relief Act was passed on 31 July 1838, the assistant Poor Law commissioner, William J. Voules came to Cork in September 1838 to implement the new laws. Meetings were held in towns throughout the country. By 1845, 123 workhouses had been built, formed into a series of districts or Poor Law Unions, each Poor Law Union containing at least one workhouse. The cost of poor relief was met by the payment of rates by owners of land and property in that district. In 1841 eight acres, 1 rood and 23 perches were leased to the Poor Law Guardians from Daniel B. Foley, Evergreen House, Cork. Mr. Foley retained an acre, on which was Evergreen House with its surrounding gardens, which fronted South Douglas Road. The subsequent workhouse that was built on the leased lands was opened in December 1841. It was an isolated place, built beyond the City’s toll house and toll gates. The Douglas Road workhouse was also one of the first of over 130 workhouses to be designed by the Poor Law Commissioners' architect George Wilkinson.

Home & Garden
Home & GARDEN Gardening - Things to do This Week Don’t forget to start planting those bulbs now to give you a beautiful Spring garden. Garden Centres are well worth a visit, particularly because you can get some expert advice and some very helpful ideas. As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.
Garden Competition
Congratulations to this weeks winner Kathleen Howard of Grange. Kathleen wins a 50 Euro voucher from Kiernans Garden Centre, Douglas Court. Our Summer Gardening Competition has come to an end for this year. We would like to thank all those who submitted entries, congratulate all the winners and our condolences to those who didn’t make it this time. But there’s always next year! In spite of our harsh Spring the standard this year was exceedingly high, and trying to choose a winner each week was a very difficult task and there were many worthy entries that time simply ran out on, but rest assured; in today’s climate every gardener is a winner.
Lawns & Hedges Continue cutting lawns if growth warrants this, with the blades set at their highest; brush off dew first on damp days.
Flower Garden
Kitchen Garden
Greenhouse
Finish lifting and drying summerflowering bulbs for storage. Finish planting al spring bulbs by the end of the month, except tulips, best planted in November. Dig up lilies for moving and propagation, and replant immediately. Buy container grown perennials, keep in the cold frame, and divide or take cuttings next Spring.
Start digging spare ground on heavy soils, leaving the surface rough and exposed to frost. Cover remaining self-blanching celery with fleece, or tuck straw between plants. Plant garlic cloves in a prepared bed: or in pots in the cold frame if soil conditions am unsuitable. Transplant lettuces sown last month, toe cold frame or greenhouse border.
Light smoke cones under glass to kill insect pests - choose a kind that may be used while plants are in situ. Sow alpine strawberries in 180C (650F), and plant out in Spring for a full crop next year. Box up dahlia tubers in slightly moist old compost, and keep frost-free. In cold districts be prepared to insulate greenhouses and cover frames. If grapes are
still ripening, remove some leaves to admit sunlight, keep the air dry and provide heat for late varieties. Isolate diseased plants undergoing treatment to avoid infection. Plant freesias in pots for flowers to cut in spring.
Water Garden Protect tender marginals such as gunnera with a mulch of bark or leaves, held down with netting. Thin out oxygenating plants, and add to the compost heap.
In General Tree seeds have limited viability - sow fresh in pots outdoors and expose to frost

This Saturday Aidan Bishop will take to the stage at the City Limits. Doors 9.00pm and admission is €15, €12 if your on the mailing list, have student id or unemployed. Aidan Bishop began his comedy career in his hometown of New York, however since relocating to Dublin he has become one of the most popular and busiest working comedians in Ireland. Aidan is resident MC of Dublin's best comedy club, International Comedy Club, Irelands second best comedy club!! However his ambitions have not been confined to the small borders of the International. In the past two years Aidan has appeared in all major Irish festivals, including the Kilkenny Cat Laughs and the Carlsberg Comedy Carnival. In 2008 Aidan made his Edinburgh Fringe Festival Debut with his solo show, ‘Bachelor Pad’ to critical acclaim. His television debut came with RTE 2’s Savage Eye as part of ‘Project Ha Ha’. He returns to Edinburgh this year with ‘Mispelled’, a show that was born out of his experiences of dyslexia. Some of the earliest ever recordings of The Beatles - in which they are joined by former collaborator Tony Sheridan are set to be released. The double CD set, The Beatles with Tony Sheridan: First Recordings, will feature tracks with Sheridan on vocals and former drummer Pete Best on the sticks. The release will come with a bumper booklet full of rare photographs taken by one time Beatles guitarist Stuart Sutcliffe's fiancée Astrid Kirchherr, poster art from early shows and handwritten biographies of each member of the band. The collection is set for release on November 8th in the US. No official date has been made public for this part of the world, but we expect it to be somewhere around November also. Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker has said that he is considering undergoing
hypnotherapy to help diminish his fear of flying so he can undergo a regular touring schedule. Barker developed this fear following a plane crash in 2008, which claimed the lives of two of his travelling party, and suffered severe burns while escaping the wreckage. "Unfortunately I can't do as much touring as I would like as I don't fly", Barker was quoted as saying by Rolling Stone. "It's an obstacle. I'm working on it though. I'm trying to get hypnotised, trying to talk to a doctor who retrains your brain. Maybe he'll help me fly again one day." Barker also revealed that the accident has led to him leading a healthier life, urging him to quit a painkiller addiction that he has developed years before. "I can proudly say I didn't even take any pain medication after I got out of hospital. They told me I'd be on some medicine for the rest of my life, but I got off all of them. They made me a completely different person." Mick Jagger has revealed that he spends too much time catching up with people on social networking site Facebook, and not enough time making music. The Rolling Stones frontman said in an interview with press that he wastes time online that could be spent writing music. He said: "I spend way too much time on the computer and not enough time playing the guitar. There's an underlying problem of this screen life taking over all of your life. "It's easy to keep in touch with people, some of whom I wish I'd never kept in touch with. But there they are on Facebook! You can spend a lot of time on that when you should be doing something else." The music legend also admitted that although he has a Twitter account, he doesn't update the page himself, adding: "But, really, who does?"

1in 10 cars on Irish roads will be electric by 2020 according to Renault Ireland Fluence Z.E. is Ireland’ s Most Affordable Electric CarBy the year 2020, Renault Ireland predicts that one in ten cars on Irish roads will be electric. This statement comes as Renault Ireland prepares to launch its Kangoo Z.E. mini van this November followed by the 4-door Fluence Z.E. saloon in early 2012. Renault’s strategy is to make electric vehicles affordable to all, and is the only manufacturer to launch a range of vehicles from commercial to passenger models. Renault has confirmed the price of the first version of Fluence Z.E - €21,620 on-the-road (after €5,000 Government grant), the same pricing as a Fluence diesel. The tempting on the road price will undercut every other electric car brand in Ireland, not to mention even comparably-sized diesel cars. With such keen pricing, the newcomer costs considerably less than zero-emission cars of similar size, and is sure to prove a tempting proposition for private and business customers alike. To give complete peace of mind when it comes to battery maintenance and technology, as well as keep its overall cost within easy reach of as many buyers as possible, there is a separate battery lease contract from €79 per month (based on 15,000 km per year/4 years). The Fluence Z.E. has a high level of equipment including 16” alloys, auto lights and wipers, climate control, cruise control, Econometer, Carminat TomTom smart satellite navigation, charging sockets on both front wings. Aside from its alluring price and
sound environmental credentials, thanks to its zero-emissions, Fluence Z.E. will also offer an enjoyable driving experience through its 70kW (95hp) power and generous 226Nm of instant torque on tap. The range of Renault’s flagship Z.E. is up to 185km, depending on driving and road conditions. The Renault Kangoo Z.E. will be the first electric vehicle offering from Renault in Ireland in November and will retail at €16,200 ex VAT with the Government grant. The battery will cost €72 ex VAT per month to lease (based on 15,000 KM in 48 months) . Renault Kangoo Z.E. will be the first range of 100% electric commercial vehicles to launch in Ireland including the Kangoo Maxi Z.E. 2 seat and 5 seat models. The Twizy ZE, an urban two seater quadricycle, will follow in mid 2012 and the Zoe ZE, a stylish compact hatch is due to arrive in Ireland in late 2012. Eric Basset, Managing Director, Renault Ireland: “Our strategy from day one was to make electric vehicles affordable to all and we are standing by this by bringing in our entry electric Fluence saloon at a price that can’t be matched by other manufacturers. Electric is not something that we thought of lightly. It started in 2005, when the Renault CEO worldwide asked what future vision he had for his customers. With increasing oil prices he made two choices that would lead the way for Renault - Diesel and Electric. Since then hundreds of Renault engineers have been working on something amazing which is now here and very real. We predict
that by the year 2020 there will close to 200,000 electric vehicles in Ireland. Remember Ireland is leading the way in Europe for infrastructure and availability. We are ready for electric. It’s not our future, it’s the present, and Renault Ireland is ready to sell affordable electric cars to suit all lifestyles”. Information on the Renault Z.E. range, including reservations, is available at www.renault.ie Registration on the site is free
and enables prospective buyers to choose their vehicle and benefit from priority availability and test drives as soon as it comes to market. These pioneering customers will then be contacted by Renault as the date of the vehicle's release approaches to obtain confirmation of their reservation. The website will also give registered visitors access to exclusive, electric mobilityrelated content, services and applications.

Douglas Community Association Douglas Tidy Towns Competition Results 2011 Douglas fared very well in this year’s competition, maintaining the high marks achieved last year, and improving them by 3 extra marks, to make this year’s result the best ever yet at 264 marks. We competed in Category G, Cork South, up against fantastic towns like Cobh, Ballincollig, and Carrigaline. We are very proud of our volunteers, who meet every Saturday morning, winter and summer, in the Community Park, and clean up the litter all around Douglas. John Fitzgerald, who has been our champion chairman for many years, dedicated much of his free time, alongside his wife Sheila, in incrementally improving our town, bit by bit each year; enhancing derelict areas, encouraging business people to improve the visual impact of their premises, working with Cork Co. Council to
carry out necessary works to improve our roads and footpaths, and making detailed submissions to the Co. Council Draft Development Plan on how to improve our town going forward. Thank you John for all you have done for Douglas – we hope we can keep up the standard you set for us!

G.A.A. FOCUS Snippets from the Local and National Scene By Pat Harrington Field of Dreams The Field of Dreams is where all young bucks learn to ply their trade – in other words it’s where the young players learn the skills of the ancient game of hurling. Dave Mac asked if I would be prepared to give a hand with the under 6’s. At this age the coach is teaching the basics, e.g. holding the hurley properly and showing tomorrow’s stars how to pull on the ball along the ground. Most of the lads start by pushing the ball like a golfer putting on the green. The opposite of course is the exaggerated pull similar to the same man teeing off. These young players find the exercises difficult initially. The secret of mastering the skills is practice, practice, practice! My advice to the beginner is to use the local green space during the week and invite your friend to participate, even in your own back garden. The game features a group of players chasing the ball which does not travel very far as it is being struck rather timidly. More often that not there could be eight or nine lads around the ball making it look something like a rugby scrum. In a corner of the pitch two lads are seen having a chat, oblivious to the happenings on the field. Hurling is surely the greatest field game in the world and I appeal to all Mams, Dads, brothers and sisters to give your young offspring/sibling a portion of your time and help him/her to master the skills. Each participant should have his/her own hurley as to progress in the game it is essential to practice with the familiar hurley on a regular basis. Tipperary Minors My good friend Stephen, a Tipperary man called me to order as I made no mention of his county’s minor footballers. Yes, the young lads from the Premier County were superb. On their way to the final they defeated Cork, Kerry, Meath, Roscommon and a highly rated Dublin side to capture the all-Ireland title. This is a great achievement! Management What prompted me to write this article was a piece written by Páidí O’Sé in the Sunday Independent in the aftermath of the Dublin defeat of Kerry in the all-Ireland final. The Kerry scribe stated that after the Munster final he had advised that The Kingdom needed to bring Tommy Walsh back from Australia, and he would also wish to see the return of Tadhg Kennelly. He goes on to say that if Tommy is capable of playing for his club on Sunday 25th. Of September there should be no reason why he could not have played for his county on Sunday 18th. I would have the opposite viewpoint. This is surely about allegiance and commitment. The two players mentioned above decided to pursue careers apart from Kerry football -and why not? I do not think they should be parachuted onto the Kerry panel. Intercounty panellists make great sacrifices and work extremely hard to get on the starting 15. The situation should be equally the same at club level. Commitment should be marked with opportunity and a fair crack to make the starting 15. A player who is involved in other sports should understand that if his commitment and attendance at training or games is not very good he cannot expect to get a game ahead of a player with strong commitment and regular attendance. At underage I believe that G.A.A., soccer, rugby, etc. Should work together to accommodate players. The G.A.A. has at times been accused of having a ban mentality as some managers would often put pressure on players to forsake their other interests as required. Of Course there are people involved in sports other that G.A.A. who would be equally biased. One will find a win at all cost attitude in some underage managers, but this is merely a short term solution. It is the norm for a player with preference for a particular sport to sooner rather than later play the game of his/her choice. There is also the player in regular attendance for matches and training who may well become disillusioned from warming up the bench. 30 - Thur 06 Oct '11
