Well Done to Billy O’Callaghan! Dear Editor, Many of your readers will be delighted to hear that local man, Billy O’Callaghan, has won the Bórd Gás Writers’ Story Award. Billy is also a founder member of the Douglas Writers’ Group and is one of the organizers of the forthcoming Lennox Robinson Literary Festival to be held in Douglas early next year which will be a very significant event for Douglas and for all the local writers’ groups. There are many budding writers in the Douglas area and Billy’s achievement will inspire them to develop their story-telling skills and perhaps it will encourage more local people to put their work forward for writing competitions. Congratulations Billy - you have done us proud! Yours sincerely, Helen Fox, PRO Douglas Community Association
Congratulations to Douglas Community Association on Anniversary Dear Editor Billy Coleman deservers warm congratulations on the excellent work of this executive and in the work of advancing community and building a real presence in Douglas. I wish to acknowledge the work of this organisation and the hugely important services it provides to the local community in the Douglas area. For the past 44 years the Douglas Community Association has been at the core of local service provision in this community and is now firmly placed in the heart of the people of Douglas. The Douglas Community Association brings together people of all backgrounds and this can be seen to all with the great levels of community spirit and good fun involved in all of the fundraising and events which have taken place here over the years. I sincerely want to congratulate all those involved in this association who actively volunteer and get out to help people in the Douglas community. Jerry Buttimer TD South Central
Minister Coveney opens 1700th Subway store in Douglas Cork based businessman Owen O’Driscoll has today, November 24th helped the SUBWAY® brand reach its milestone of 1,700 stores across the UK and Ireland. The 1,700th SUBWAY® store has opened in Douglas, Cork and the SUBWAY® brand has announced plans for a further 40 stores in Ireland in 2014. The store openings planned by the SUBWAY® development team will create up to 400 new jobs and represent an investment of almost €5m. Today’s opening in Douglas brings the total store count in the Republic of Ireland to 117 and the Douglas store is the 16th new store to open in the Republic of Ireland this year alone. All of the stores in the network are owned by local businesspeople who operate their SUBWAY® stores on a franchise basis. Support from the SUBWAY® franchise is provided in relation to location, fit-out, marketing, product development and operations. The SUBWAY® brand is the largest specialist sandwich franchise in the world. Earlier this year, the brand announced its 40,000th store opening globally. The 1700th store opening milestone in the UK and Ireland further demonstrates the strength and growth of the SUBWAY® brand; there have been over 100 new store openings across the UK and Ireland in 2013. Neil Black, Development Agent for the SUBWAY® brand in Ireland, comments: “Ireland is a great success story for the SUBWAY® brand as evidenced by our strong growth over the past few years. In the midst of the recession we have invested and grown our network and it is a great achievement to be opening the 1,700th store in the UK and Ireland in Douglas, Cork. Speaking about the opening of the SUBWAY® outlet on Main Street, Douglas, Owen O’Driscoll said: “In Ireland the SME sector is the backbone of our economy and for me the opportunity to start and run a business has been fantastic. Starting from a base of zero I now employ a team of over 26 people across three stores. From a consumer perspective the SUBWAY® brand is a real attraction bringing consumers the very best sandwiches with healthier options and great value. From a business perspective, the low costs involved in set-up, allied to the brand strength and the support of a network of small business owners just like me makes it an ideal new business venture.” One of the significant benefits of becoming a SUBWAY® franchisee is the ability to operate within a tried-and-tested system with excellent training provision and a solid support structure. The SUBWAY® brand already occupies over two million sq. ft. of prime retail space in the UK and Ireland, with many more stores in development. What is more, the adaptability of the stores and the high customer demand means there are still plenty of opportunities available for people looking to strike out and start their own business.

It’s not for beginners, but for people who are already committed to writing and have quite an amount of work already written.
Our poem this week vividly and immediately identifies with its subject and maintains a balanced if somewhat humorous aura throughout each verse. The poem does not rely on hackneyed expressions and the author has breathed new life into our understanding of Christmas as we may choose to look at it from a modern prospective. The choice of form and style blend perfectly with the mood of the poem. The originality of the poem puts it in a class of its own. It has always been my contention, whether it’s original or not I’m uncertain, that attention to detail is the difference between success and failure. Marion Horgan of Cobh, Co Cork, Ireland pays a lot of attention to detail in her writing. Not just in the big details but in the little ones that are obvious to us yet we never seem to pay them much attention. This comes across beautifully in her book ‘My Road’. Everyone should have a copy. Mine is never far from my bedside. If you have any problem obtaining a copy, please fell free to contact me and we’ll organize something. This week Marion has given us a very seasonal poem
Catalogue Christmas It’s a catalogue Christmas, So what would you like? I’ll take a play station, And throw in a bike. It’s a catalogue Christmas, It’s all on display, There’s even mail order, Act now, don t delay! It’s a catalogue Christmas, So what’s it to be? The jeep on page fifty, And the gun on page three! The elves and the reindeer Are on a go-slow, ‘Cos it s all in the catalogue, Ready to go! O, where is the wonder, And where is the awe, The hoping and wishing For ol’ Santa Claus? THE MAUREEN PERSONAL BRA FITTER
“Simplicity is the Ultimate Sophistication” By Frank K Hanover Women beware! Tendonitis, IBS, stress headaches, digestive disorders, collar bone deformation and physical fatigue are just several of the persistent ailments that can affect women from one frequently overlooked source. An ill-fitting bra. Whether you’re young or old, large or small breasted the reflection in the countless narratives written of on women’s pages in many global daily newspapers and health journals, is that 8 in every 10 women are wearing the wrong sized bra. Here in Douglas a solution has been invented. The first stockists in the World are La Femme Lingerie Experts in the East Village. The Maureen Personal Bra Fitter allows women globally to measure their breasts for a bra simply and accurately, which brings to life the eloquent meaning of the Leonardo Da Vinci quotation, “Simplicity is the Ultimate Sophistication” This way each woman can choose the correct brassiere size for posture and personal elegance. Such is the complete degree of innovation of the Maureen that its inventor at La Femme Lingerie Experts has been assisted by such companies and brands as Anita and the people who assembled the global utility item, Fildan Accessories. This lifetime product, which has been exhibited at Paris Interfilliere, is available exclusively at La Femme Lingerie Experts at a cost of 10 euro and it’ll enhance the quality of life and well being of millions of women. Progress on the Taking in Charge of Estates
As you may be aware, residential estates are generally taken in charge by a Local Authority after a period of time. This essentially means that the Council becomes responsible for the roads, footpaths, public lighting as well as the public services within the estate. Unfortunately, in the case of Cork County Council, its record on taking estates in charge in a timely manner has been extremely poor. I have been a longtime critic of this lack of activity by the Council and over the years I have placed a number of specific motions before the Full Council meetings. It is simply unjustifiable to have residents living in estates which are developed for 15, 20 and even 30+ years, and still not taken in charge by the Council. This leaves residents in an impossible position when issues arise within the estate. However, having been an ardent critic of the Council on this issue, I am pleased to report that a decisive step forward has been taken recently. The Council has published a list of over 130 estates in The Examiner newspaper on 15th November which signals the commencement of the taking in charge process. This formal process should take 2 - 3 months to conclude when the estates are officially taken in charge. A high number of the estates published are within this electoral area and it represents positive news for the residents concerned. However, while publishing a list of 130 + estates is an unprecedented step for the Council, it is important to note that a number of estates in the local area have not been included on the list, despite the long period of time since they were developed. I have already raised this issue with the Director of Planning in Cork County Council and I have been a assured that a second round of estates will be published in the near future. If you would like to enquire regarding the status of your estate, please do hesitate to contact me.

Seizures What is a seizure?
A seizure (also called a ‘fit’ or convulsion) occurs when there is a ‘disruption’ or a brief break in the electrical activity between the neurones (specialised brain cells) in the brain. There are many different types of seizures, varying from absence seizures that look as if a person is staring into space, to more obvious convulsions that involve the entire body. Some people only have one seizure in their lifetime while others may have many. Most seizures last less than five minutes. Seizures are not always a sign of epilepsy (a medical condition that causes seizures). They may be caused by brain injury or infection, fever, drugs or excessive alcohol use. The cause of a seizure may not always be obvious. Seizures are often very frightening for the observer, especially if they have never seen one before. Brain damage resulting from a seizure is very rare.
Types of seizures
Below are some common types of generalised seizures. Tonic clonic – The person may cry out (wail) before losing awareness (consciousness). Their entire body stiffens and starts shaking or jerking violently. They may fall to the ground and may injure themselves as a result. Their eyes may roll back (so you can only see the white part) and they may turn blue around the lips or in the face. Absence – The person may have a fixed gaze; as if a person is staring into space or their eyelids may ‘flicker’. There is no other obvious jerking. They do not respond when you talk to them. Myoclonic – Twitching, jerking or ‘tremor’ is seen in one or more limbs. The person may be awake. Febrile convulsion/ seizure – Happens in children aged between six months and six years due to a sudden change in temperature (when they have a fever). This seizure may appear like a tonic clonic seizure.
How can I help?
There are some things you can do to help a person who is having a seizure: Remember to stay calm. Do NOT put anything in the person’s mouth (including your fingers) or give them anything to drink or eat (including any medication) until they have regained consciousness and are fully awake and alert (not sleepy or confused). Ensure the person cannot injure themselves – remove sharp or hard objects (if possible) from around the person and place something soft under their head. Do not try to restrain the person. Make sure you do not get injured if they are thrashing around. Take note of what time the seizure began and time how long it goes for; if it is longer than five minutes or you are very worried and need help then call an ambulance. Place the person on their side once the seizure has subsided and their body has softened (it is stiff and rigid during a seizure). This helps the person breathe easier and allows the saliva to drain from the mouth. For more information on seizures talk to your G.P. or call Garvan at Lynch’s Pharmacy on 4366923.

West Cork Through Time Kieran McCarthy’s new book is called West Cork Through Time (co-written with Dan Breen). Researching West Cork, the visitor discovers that each parish has its own local historian, village/ town council, tidy towns group, community group and business community who have inspired the creation of heritage trails and information panels, each asserting why its area has a strong sense of place and identity and why it should be visited. Relics from the past also haunt the landscape with prominent landmarks ranging from Bronze Age standing stones to ivy clad ruined houses and castles, churches and big houses, to cultivated farmlands. All add to the spectacle that is West Cork. The winding roads bring the visitor on an experience through landscapes, many of which are frozen in time for centuries. There are places that charm, catch and challenge the eye especially in the quest to retake photos on hundred years on. For example Chapter 1 begins with an exploration of what could be described a gateway country into West Cork; the towns of Bandon and Clonakilty were all founded 400 years ago and are central to a necklace of market towns in their vicinity such as Dunmanway and Drimoleague. All are set against the backdrop of a raw glaciated mountainous landscape and the Bandon river valley and its tributaries. Another chapter leads the visitor on a journey from Bantry to Bere Island. The drama of the landscape here is amazing as coastal roads loom out into the coast and loom back in through tunnelled out rock. Cllr McCarthy noted “West Cork in itself is a way of life where generations, individuals and communities, have etched out their lives. It is a place of discovery, of inspiration, a place of peace and contemplation, and a place to find oneself in the world. There is even more to offer the tourist today than there was a hundred years ago. What’s the best way to see West Cork – travel through it, sense it and enjoy it!”. West Cork Through Time is available in any good Cork bookshop or on Amazon. Cllr Kieran McCarthy is also recruiting volunteers to help (newsletter drops, canvassing) with his local election campaign in early 2014. Those interested in supporting an Independent’s campaign, Kieran would be happy to hear from them (087 655 33 89). http://www.corkheritage.ie/ http://www.kieranmccarthy.ie/ Kieran’ heritage on facebook: Cork: Our City, Our Town

Looking for a few good men!
The men are outnumbered by four or five to one by the women at all the Ceili Fit classes across Cork. They are looking for a few good men to help them out dancing with all the lovely female dancers in the various classes. You can be married or single, with or without dance experience but just willing to come along for the craic and stay for the dancing. See www.ceilifit.ie for more details of the times and venues. Alternatively you can contact the tutor, Fionan Cogan, directly on 087 818 5111 or by email on ceilifit@gmail. com.
100 GOSPEL VOICES FOR COPE
Last December a seemingly simple idea of having a few gospel choirs coming together to sing for a charity became a huge success. One hundred singers, many musicians and every seat in the Carrigaline Church was full with Gospel music. Many who attended have been asking for the concert to be run again this year. So, due to popular demand the 100 Gospel Voices concert will take place again in Our Lady & St John Church, Carrigaline, on Sunday 8th December at 7.30pm (doors opening at 7pm). This year’s concert will be in aid of COPE Foundation, and will feature Carrigaline, Carrigtwohill and Castlelyons Gospel Choirs performing both Gospel and Christmas songs. Entry will be free, however donations will be taken at the door.
LEARN TO CEILI & SET DANCE
The classes in the White Lady Hotel Kinsale are on a Monday night from 8.30pm to 10.30pm. Most nights there are up to 3 sets of dancers on the floor. There is always space for

more, especially men who would be very popular, even if they are just beginning. One new dancer said, “Fionan is such a wonderful teacher. He allows us to learn so much in just a short time while we are enjoying the exercise!” In Carrigaline GAA on a Thursday night from 8.3010.30pm the Ceili classes are going well, often 4 sets or more dancing together. Many of the more experienced dancers are quiet willing to help out with those not so sure. “This is better than any gym! Here you get to have fun, meet new people and have a chat, while getting a great workout,” said a man who hadn’t danced for a while. So if you’d like to come along for the craic and stay for a dance, feel free to come along in either or both venues. See www.ceilifit.ie for other venues and news updates. Contact the tutor Fionan Cogan directly on 087 818 5111 or emailceilifit@gmail.com.

WINTERING PLANTING It has come to that time of year again when the common questions are asked: What can I use for planting in the garden to have some colour that will last through the winter? With the bedding plants, we can start off with the good old classics of Pansies and Primroses, these are frost hardy plants that will go great in any window box mixed with an assortment of heathers from that natural ones to the spray painted. These will last well into the spring, they are very simple to maintain and easy to put together. Why not fill an edge to a border in the garden with some pansies to have a sea of colour. Another great bedding plant for this time of the year is Cyclamen, with its vibrant shades of pinks, dazzling whites and seasonal reds. These make any planters stand out on a dull winter day. Make sure you mix some potting grit with the soil for these plants to ensure that the drainage is good. Why not plant some fantastic winter flowering shrubs too such as Viburnum tinus, Camellias, Skimmeas. These have long flowering periods from November to February. Remember that Skimmeas and Camelias like acidic soil so use Shamrock Brown Gold compost for these plants to ensure healthy growth. We now also have a florist working at Kiernan’s to make wreaths, swags and soon bouquets for this festive season soon approaching. These can me made to order so just drop in and speak with a member of staff and get your garden and home blooming for winter. Kieran’s Garden Centre, Douglas Court, Douglas. THE P60 TAX CERTIFICATE QUESTION
1,200 students to be accommodated in 2 new postprimary schools in south Cork Patronage of new Cork schools awarded to the Edmund Rice Schools Trust and Educate together following consultation with local parents. Fine Gael Cork South Central Deputy, Jerry Buttimer, has today (Thursday) welcomed the awarding of the patronage of two new schools in the south Cork region to Edmund Rice Schools Trust (ERST) and Educate Together saying that these new schools, which will accommodate 1,200 students when built, will offer greater choice to parents in the education their children receive. As part of a wider announcement of the awarding of patronage of nine new post-primary schools nationally, the Minister for Education, Ruairí Quinn TD, outlined that a new ERST and an ET school, both with a capacity for 600 students, are to be built in the south Cork suburbs and Carrigaline. This will come as extremely welcome news to the families in south Cork as populations have grown in these areas in recent years. “These schools are scheduled to open between 2015 and 2016 and the fact that prospective patrons were asked to provide evidence of parental demand when making applications for patronage of the new schools, means that the educational needs of local families are being met. Despite our financial constraints, we are continuing to prioritise education and the provision of good quality infrastructural facilities for our school going population. The building of these two new schools in the south Cork region will add significantly to the schools that are already in the area, provide greater choice for parents and ease the pressure each year as children progress from primary to secondary level.”
My employer says I will get a P60 in January. What is this?
ANSWER A P60 is the tax certificate you receive from your employer at the end of each tax year. Its full title is ‘Certificate of Pay, Tax, Pay-Related Social Insurance, Universal Social Charge and Local Property Tax’. The P60 is an important document. It states your pay during the year, the tax you paid and other deductions such as PRSI and Universal Social Charge. The P60 now also includes a record of Local Property Tax (LPT) paid, if you opt to have LPT deducted at source from your earnings. If you need to claim a social welfare benefit you must give a P60 to the Department of Social Protection as evidence of how many PRSI contributions you paid in the year. You may also be required to provide a P60 as proof of your income, for example, if you are making a bank loan or mortgage application, if you are applying for social welfare payments or if you are applying for a student grant. Your employer should give you your P60 for the previous tax year by 15 February of the following year. If your employer does not give you a P60 you should contact your local tax office. Revenue can contact your employer to obtain your P60 for you. Only an employer can issue a P60. However, Revenue can provide you with details of the pay and tax for the year in question as returned by your employer, which Revenue has on file. If you stopped working for an employer before 31 December of the tax year you do not get a P60. You should get a P45 instead. Report on Christmas Flower Demonstration
This was truly an amazing night’s entertainment with Malcolm Kitt and who is not only a fantastic Floral Artist, but also a very witty, entertaining man who regaled us with so many interesting stories – including 101 tips on reusing and reinventing simple household objects, as well as his life growing up in South Africa. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY “Constant use will wear out anything – especially friends”
Christmas is a great time for celebration but also a lonely time. Most people are happy at Christmas as they have the family and loved ones around them. However for many older people Christmas is not a happy time, as it brings back sad memories of loved ones who have passed on and times when they were together with their children as a family. People who live alone are most likely to be lonely. A lack of social interaction can make people more vulnerable to depression. Loneliness is the “hidden killer” of elderly people and we need to recognise the link between loneliness and ill health, and with the shorter, darker days and cold weather we’re calling on everyone to play their part to lessen the impact of the winter months. If you know someone living alone call in for a chat. Check if they need shopping, just let them know you are only a call away. In Cork City, of those aged over 70, 21% live alone, 1/3 are male, 2/3 are female. Cork City has a population of 119,230, of this

She gave good advice on how to cope if you have a fall when you are alone. Don’t panic, it is natural to feel shocked and shaken but try to stay calm Try to get help. Use your Pendant alarm. If near a phone call 999. Keep warm; try to reach for something to cover yourself with. Try not to lie in one position for too long as you may get cold and suffer from pressure sores. Role from side to side and move arms and legs if possible. Keep a bottle of water and a blanket in each room just in case you fall. Tell your GP or home help if you have fallen or nearly fallen. Our sincere thanks to everyone who supported and baked cakes for Penny Dinners coffee morning and cake sale. HAND ME THE KEYS
by Ellie Braun-Haley, Alberta, Canada My friend Carin was driving home from a few days in the mountains on assignment. It was 1982, and she was excited to see her family again. She came up behind an erratic driver, and wondered if he was falling asleep, suffering a heart attack, or drunk at the wheel. Then she saw him toss a beer bottle. She drove around him to safety, and put distance between the two cars. Then her conscience nagged, “I can’t just drive away, I need to get him off the road; someone might be killed!” She slowed to move back behind the drunk, never pausing to think about repercussions. As the drunk approached again and passed, her plan took root. She would pull up beside him, honk and motion for him to pull over. When she did that, however, he just looked confused and decelerated. After two repeats, he was driving at city street speeds, but she was no closer to stopping him. One more time... he slowed, and pulled over onto the

shoulder. Then she watched in horror as he lost control of his car. The ditch was roomy with gentle slopes. A good driver could drive in and out easily. He skidded in -- and stopped. Was he hurt? Carin dashed down to his vehicle. He sat slumped. She rapped on the window, “Are you all right?” He nodded yes and rolled down the window. “Give me your keys. I can’t allow you to drive,” she demanded. He stared, reached for his keys and handed them over. “You could cause an accident,” she said, “a death that would haunt you throughout your life.” “I’ve been up all night. I worked late, there was a farewell party... I needed to get home....” he replied, then wilted again. Carin took him to her car, drove his out of the ditch, suddenly realizing she had no further plans. What to do?
You will need To serve 4 people 3 BREASTS OF CHICKEN , DICED INTO 12 PIECIES PER BREAST, 6 INCH PIECE OF CHORITZO SLICED THINLY. 1 MEDIUM ONION, & 1 CLOVE OF GARLIC, ½ TEASPOON OF MIXED HERBS, 1 TIN OF CHOPPED TOMATOES, ½ GLASS OF WHITE WINE & 1 TEASPOON OF CORNFLOUR MIXED TO A PASTE WITH A LITTLE OF THE WINE + 1 TIN OF BUTTER BEANS OR CHICKPEAS ( OPTIONAL) , drain off and + IN LAST 5 MINS.
METHOD
1) Heat a large frying pan or wok with a good slosh of olive oil, and heat until sizzling 2) Add in the chicken and brown, until cooked all sides, remove onto baking sheet and pop in oven to keep warm. 3) Heat pan again add in choritzo, until juicies
Back up on the highway, inspiration struck. As if on schedule a car appeared on the horizon. With the stranger leaning against her car to steady himself, she entered the road. She waved her arms, and the car slowed to reveal four male passengers. “One of you must drive this man’s car to his home, as he’s too drunk to drive.” The passenger in the front nodded “yes”. Everyone else agreed. Carin returned to the drunk, told him of the arrangements, and assured him both he and his car would arrive home safely. He took her hand, smiled and said, “ Thank you for caring. No one has ever done something like this for me. I just...thank you.” To this day, more than thirty odd years later, Carin doesn’t remember what she said in response. None of us know what that driver thinks of this incident today. Yet, I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that, in addition to perhaps saving his life that night, her one act of kindness made a lasting change in his life.
start to flow then add in chopped onions ,crushed garlic and herbs, stirfry for 3 mins and then add tin tomatoes 4) Add wine and bring to the boil, simmer for a few mins and then add chicken back in, if the sauce is too thin add cornflour paste, and simmer for 3 mins. This is a super dish for entertaining as it can be made beforehand and kept warm in the oven, and the flavours only get better with time , serve with cous cous, or rice to soak up all those delicious juicies and a big green salads and crusty bread, DELICIOUS!! TIP OF THE WEEK – Why not double your ingredients or use chicken thighs, & pop half in the freezer so that you can have a night off sometime!!

A range of schemes were outlined in the Budget to provide tangible support for small-scale businesses. The ‘Start Your Own Business’ initiative will allow individuals who have been unemployed for 12 months or more, and who start their own business, to gain an income of up to €40,000 per annum for two years without paying any income tax. The initiative has been enhanced since being announced in the Budget, with Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan, confirming recently that the threshold for eligibility will be reduced for this scheme from 15 months to 12 months. This scheme will no doubt appeal to those who may have formerly been self-employed and are eager to start up again, or former construction workers who retain a skills base which allows them to start up on their own. In addition, funding is being made available for a ‘Building Business Capacity’ pilot programme. Very shortly,1,000 SMEs will be offered the chance to take part in a subsidised two day boot camp in 2014, with expert mentoring support provided. Targeting the hugely important issue of access to credit, the decision in the Budget to expand the scope of the Credit Review Office allows small businesses to now appeal larger credit decisions of up to €3 million, up from the previous limit of €500,000. SMEs will get more breathing room in the critical area of cash-flow, as the VAT cash receipts basis threshold for small businesses is being increased from €1.25million to €2million. I would encourage interested individuals to get in touch with my office for further information, and to prepare the ground for applications for these schemes” Ciarán Lynch TD., Constituency Office 29 St. Patrick’s Mills Douglas Tel: 021 4366200 Fax: 021 4366202 ciaran.lynch@oir.ie

William and Alan are playing with a small plastic ball when it falls down a hole. They find that no matter how hard they try there is not enough room to get their fingers around the ball to pull it out. “My Dad will kill me “ moans William, “That ball was a present”. “ Don’t worry “ replied hid friend, “There is one sure way to get the ball out”. What did he do ?” Last week’s Answer: Alan attached some sticky tape to the ball and pulled it up

Do we know what Local Government is?
by Diarmaid Ó Cadhla.
Politics these days is almost like a dirty word, it is associated with junkets, corruption, back-room deals, dishonesty, dynasties and generally something divorced from the people. It is a sad reality that today the vast majority of citizens are effectively excluded from our democratic process, we have no say in deciding any question of national policy, let alone the policy of our Local Council. So, with elections next May we need to ask the question, are they any use as our families and community face deepening all-sided crisis? The answer to our question is in article 28A of Bunreacht na hÉireann, our Constitution, in it we decided that the role of Local Government was to provide “a forum for the democratic representation of local communities”, it is to promote “the interests” of our
communities. This Constitutional provision provides us with something of great relevance and practical use, it says that our communities should be represented - not any Political Party or ‘single-issue’ individuals. As we approach the elections we should consider this, are we best served by what are effectively private member clubs, Parties? Can we select our own candidates and contract them to only vote and implement policy approved in our local electoral areas? If we do this we can have proper representation and begin to be effective, we can also do the same when the next Dáil elections come about. We must have Representation of the People not Political Parties, Banks or any other vested interests
