the word by George Thompson
‘Keano, Keano Buy Us a Pint!’
I watched frustratingly as Cork tried to contain Clare during the first half of their championship clash in Thurles last Sunday and to be honest, at that stage I had written the Rebels off, not thinking that they could come back from 9 points down, especially the way the game had been going up until then. But once again, the game of hurling can never be predicted nor can the Rebel county. What a cracker of a second half, as Cork clawed back and overtook the Banner men, leading to a nerve wracking final few minutes which saw the spoils going to Cork, setting up an All Ireland Semi Final with Kilkenny in two weekends time. Without doubt Cork has provided some of the most nail biting and entertaining hurling for TV this season and we wish them well in their semi final. * * * I was at Turners Cross on Monday evening for the ‘friendly’ between Cobh Ramblers and Roy Keane’s Sunderland. The weather was threatening but that didn’t deter the large crowd from turning out. A small group of Sunderland supporters travelled over for the fixture and they were certainly in fine voice for the occasion, at one stage chanting “Keano, Keano buy us a pint” to which the Sunderland boss acknowledged with the shake of his head and a wave. The football wasn’t the greatest but the craic was good. What caught my attention was the pitch and considering that Cork City had played on it, the previous evening, Turners Cross has to be one of the best pitches and surfaces in the country. * * * Well we are coming into what is, the traditional summer holidays – the August fortnight, beginning with the long weekend and although the weather at the moment is more reminiscent of winter, hopefully the gods will look upon us and give us a few weeks of sun. As it is holiday time and particularly this long weekend, Irish Water Safety is appealing to the public to be responsible and avoid becoming a drowning statistic by following some key water safety tips that will help keep the public safe over the weekend. Water-related tragedies happen in the blink of an eye and it is a tragedy that an average of 160 lives, are lost to drowning each year. Make sure you return safely to shore - and ultimately back home - by playing it safe. For more information and safety tips, log on to www.iws.ie or call Irish Water Safety in Galway on 091-564400.

A d v er t i s i n g
Hi, my name is Simon, I’m 17 years old and was born with Cerebral Palsy which is a severe motor disorder. I understand everything that’s going on around me but I cannot converse, walk or use most of my limbs so I rely entirely on the day-to-day assistance of my family with a little outside help. I also have Epilepsy and Asthma and have undergone numerous operations to my hips, legs, thighs etc. I am currently awaiting another hip operation and a scoliosis operation over the next few months! Despite requests since last October 2007, my parents have failed to obtain a specific mattress which was supplied for my use in recent Hospital Confinements. To-date we have been unable to secure any funding. This is just one of the things which would make all of our lives easier.
My needs are: 1. 2.
Hill-Rom Duo II Mattress. My van up-dated with electronic lift for my wheelchair. Garden made accessible for wheelchair. Double Patio door at rear of house to enable me to access garden. Independent living area with wheelchair accessible bathroom. Doors widened in each room.
3. 4. 5. 6.
I cannot take a shower at home as we do not have facilities and my hair is washed lying down in bed. Another struggle for Mum and Dad. It makes me feel very angry to see them so tired and no control of their own life. This Garden Party I feel very excited about as it is being held by my very kind neighbours and will be the first of a few events in the future to try and meet the necessary requirements to make life comfortable and easier all-round.
I thank you for your kind support.

Investment in science pays a long term dividend in R&D jobs
Thomas Russell and Robert Emmet
As Fine Gael Innovation Spokeswoman I welcome last weeks announcement of State investment in the science, technology & innovation area as the type of investment which can provide long-term benefits to the country, and urged that this funding be protected from the economic downturn.
Dear Editor,
Over the years, Robert Emmet’s connection with Cork is generally associated with Sarah Curran who was betrothed to Emmet. She is buried in Newmarket Cemetery in a grave next to her father John Philpott Curran who had defended Wolfe Tone in 1798. Some years ago a bronze statue to Sarah Curran was erected in the centre of Newmarket. By far the most important person associated with Robert Emmet was Thomas Russell. He was born in Dromahane near Mallow, of Anglo Irish stock. He joined the British Army and served in India. He returned to Ireland in 1784, and commenced studies in science, philosophy and politics in 1790. He met Wolfe Tone in the public gallery in the House of Commons and they became close friends. The same year Russell resumed his military career in the British Army. The French Revolution of 1789 inspired Russell and the other leaders of the United Irishmen. In 1796, Russell was captured in Co. Down and imprisoned, thereby missing out on the 1798 Rebellion. A year later he was released on condition that he exile to Hamburg. He made his way to Ireland and met Robert Emmet. They laid out the plans for the Insurrection of 1803. Russell took command of Ulster prior to the Insurrection. His chief aide was Mary Ann McCracken, sister of Henry Joy McCracken. While he worked on the logistics of the Insurrection, a lengthy poem was written about him called “The Man from God Knows Where” After the collapse of the Insurrection and the execution of Robert Emmet, Russell was captured in Downpatrick. He was hanged on the 21st of October 1803 at the age of 36. One hundred and fifty years later, a unique monument was erected near his birthplace by the inhabitants of Dromahane. Yours sincerely, Con O’Mahony, Grangewood Court

The announcement of the provision for €23 million in funding to 143 projects under the SFI Research Frontiers Programme is an example of how we can take positive steps to invest in the future. The demand for this funding shows how Ireland is developing as a country where cutting edge research is taking place. The successful projects will be provided with the resources that could prove critical in allowing them to make major scientific breakthroughs that will in turn improve Ireland’s reputation as a host country where science, technology and innovation is supported and encouraged. Recent announcements such as those of EMC’s creation of 50 jobs and Siemens’ of 60 jobs, both in the Cork area, show that investment in science, technology & innovation provide Ireland with the international reputation and experienced workforce that can attract high-quality jobs. The development of the Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation (SSTI) 2006-2013 and funding of the sector under the National Development Plan must not be allowed to become yet another victim of Government cutbacks. Cutbacks in such a vital area could seriously undermine our attempts to transform Ireland into a knowledge-based economy.

Hand Me the Keys
by Ellie Braun-Haley, Alberta, Canada My friend Carin was driving home from a few days in the mountains on assignment. It was 1982, and she was excited to see her family again. She came up behind an erratic driver, and wondered if he was falling asleep, suffering a heart attack, or drunk at the wheel. Then she saw him toss a beer bottle. She drove around him to safety, and put distance between the two cars. Then her conscience nagged, “I can’t just drive away, I need to get him off the road; someone might be killed!” She slowed to move back behind the drunk, never pausing to think about repercussions. As the drunk approached again and passed, her plan took root. She would pull up beside him, honk and motion for him to pull over. When she did that, however, he just looked confused and decelerated. After two repeats, he was driving at city street speeds, but she was no closer to stopping him. One more time... he slowed, and pulled over onto the shoulder. Then she watched in horror as he lost control of his car. The ditch was roomy with gentle slopes. A good driver could drive in and out easily. He skidded in -- and stopped. Was he hurt? Carin dashed down to his vehicle. He sat slumped. She rapped on the window, “Are you all right?” He nodded yes and rolled down the window. “Give me your keys. I can’t allow you to drive,” she demanded. He stared, reached for his keys and handed them over. “You could cause an accident,” she said, “a death that would haunt you throughout your life.” “I’ve been up all night. I worked late, there was a farewell party... I needed to get home....” he replied, then wilted again. Carin took him to her car, drove his out of the ditch, suddenly realizing she had no further plans. What to do? Back up on the highway, inspiration struck. As if on schedule a car appeared on the horizon. With the stranger leaning against her car to steady himself, she entered the road. She waved her arms, and the car slowed to reveal four male passengers.

Parents Day
“One of you must drive this man’s car to his home, as he’s too drunk to drive.” The passenger in the front nodded “yes”. Everyone else agreed. Carin returned to the drunk, told him of the arrangements, and assured him both he and his car would arrive home safely. He took her hand, smiled and said, “ Thank you for caring. No one has ever done something like this for me. I just...thank you.”

To this day, more than twenty odd years later, Carin doesn’t remember what she said in response. None of us know what that driver thinks of this incident today. Yet I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that, in addition to perhaps saving his life that night, her one act of kindness made a lasting change in his life.

We are looking forward to opening our doors in late September”. Covin Supermarkets will be hosting a Recruitment Fair on Wednesday, July 30th in Maryborough House Hotel, Douglas (10am to 10pm). The objective of this event is to introduce the EUROSPAR concept to potential employees and offer individuals the opportunity of walk in interviews. In addition, it will enable interested parties to meet the Covin Supermarkets management team and gain a greater insight into the plans for Passage West. The company will be recruiting a full compliment of retail staff from Assistant Manager to part time check-out assistants. Speaking on the importance of recruiting the right team Kevin White, director Covin Supermarkets, stated “Getting the right team on board is crucial to the service offering we plan for Passage West. We want to recruit for the future, ensuring our team grows with us over the coming months and years. We have recently appointed Shirley O’ Connor as our HR Manager and she will be playing a very active role in driving forward the recruitment process for this new store. We would encourage people to attend the recruitment fair to learn more about EUROSPAR Passage West”.

Each year the President hosts about six ‘Garden Parties,’ and the one we attended was for voluntary helpers in caring organisations. Each group is limited to eight persons, and our group included two members who have been volunteers since the start they are Madge Brennan and Noreen Fitzgibbon. We were presented to the President, and her husband. Afterwards there was a buffet with finger food. As the weather was showery, everyone stayed indoors. After refreshments there was an hour of entertainment. During that time the President spoke to us. As we were leaving we got strawberries with chocolate, and soft drinks. poetry corner with Ronnie McGinn
Simon Urbanski moved to Ireland from Poland in 2005. He wrote “Housewar”, a poem we published a few months ago, during Business Studies Course (2006/’07) in St. Colman’s Community College in Midleton, where he now resides. At the moment he is in first year in C.I.T. There is a second part to this week’s poem which we hope to include shortly “Last Breath/First Step” Long time ago someone was born Long time ago someone had to go that unknown road Through the day and through the night Through the love and through the hate Sometimes it was light, sometimes it was dark Do you remember that time? First time when you laugh, first time when you cry Disappointed for a very first time of crying the tears out True smile and love until the end of time Quiet and peaceful life until the feeling of primal screaming The whole of the soul, because of Death taking someone close Can you come back to that past? • Artist Eimear McNally, from Carrigaline contributing to the Mayfield Community Arts Centre mural at the GlobalFest Youths Arts Festival in Bishop Lucey Park at the weekend. Barleyfield - A Benchmark for Future Developments.
For Sale by Private Treaty
35 Inismore Park, Cobh, Co. Cork. Spacious 4 Bedroom semi-detached property with gardens front and rear and enjoying harbour views from the rear which is private and south facing.
Pics Courtesy of Irish Examiner
In the picturesque village of Whitechurch, just minutes from Cork City, you'll find a very different kind of development. A place where modern living meets traditional style combined with the highest of standards. This place is Barleyfield, and it simply couldn't be better. Barleyfield was designed by the award winning architects RORSA, whose aim was 'to create something a buyer would want to build themselves'. And in this they have certainly succeeded, with amazing attention to detail and a real contemporary edge. Features include everything from Natural Limestone finish to imported Carlson windows, while underfloor gas heating and above spec timber framing ensure the highest energy ratings. There are 4 different house types, and all are individually designed to maximize natural light and space. The exterior has been planned to perfection, while inside you'll find some very clever touches including original walnut staircases, generously designed stylish kitchens and walk-in or built-in wardrobes. Most rooms have elegant French Doors leading to the finished patio areas, and a state of the art Home Music System is linked to recessed surround sound speakers. Quality is superb throughout, with high-end ware, lighting, finished flooring, tiling, and many little but effective extras all included. So if you're searching for somewhere really special and your appetite runs to more than 20th century design levels, take a look at Barleyfield, a truly stunning and clever development, and as a journalist recently quoted Barleyfield is a “benchmark for homes in the future. And perhaps the real beauty of a landmark development like Barleyfield, with all the extras, is that you won't find better value for money. For further details or to arrange a viewing appointment please contact Countrywide Homes Ltd at 021-4382233 See www.barleyfield.ie for more.

forde focus Cllr. Deirdre Forde
Maryborough Hill & Donnybrook Hill Green Route
Further to my previous report yesterday the manager indicated that he will bring this project before us in September, he stated that the delays were due to officials trying to get agreement from various parties which has taken too long, he now believes that the matter should be decided at council level and will be before the Area Roads committee in September.. The project could be divided into a number of smaller contracts and that there would be some benefits in constructing the project in this manner. There may be an under spend on a local Green Route project currently underway this year then it may be possible to carry out some works along Donnybrook Hill this year. This is very good news locally given the unacceptable standard of some of the footpaths on Donnybrook Hill the upgrading of which I have been seeking for some time now.
Request for NRA to review exit and entrances from N28 to Rochestown Road
Readers wont believe this but its true, last November/December I placed a motion before the Area Committee that the Engineer request the NRA review both the exit from the South Link to the Rochestown Road and the entrance from the R610 to the South Link Road and do a Health & Safety Audit due to the increasing number of accidents on same. I finally received a reply last week!! Whether this is due to the request being
Carrigaline Community News
‘Packing back’ in Carrigaline
It was all go go go in Dunnes Stores, Crosshaven Road on Saturday 26th! Parents, staff and volunteers from the new Carrigaline Educate Together N.S. were packing bags in an effort to raise funds for the school. Carrigaline Educate Together N.S. is looking forward to opening its doors to the boys and girls of area on September 1st, 2008. Educate Together schools are fully recognised by the Irish Department of Education and Science and work under the same regulations and funding structures as other national schools. However, they have a distinct ethos or governing spirit based on four principles. It is multi-denominational, co-educational, child-centred and democratically run with active participation by parents. Carrigaline Educate Together N.S. are currently enrolling Junior Infants up to 2nd class for this coming September. Any child aged four before September 1st is welcome to enrol. Also, pre-enrolment up to 2012 is being taken.
South Link sent to the incorrect department or other reasons Ill leave the reader decide!. The reply states the the proposed N28 Cork to Ringaskiddy upgrade Scheme will maintain the existing on and off ramps at the above locations, however the R610 northbound merge will be relocated a short distance to the west to enable a full dual carriageway to be constructed on the N28. The Rochestown Road junction with the N28 Ramps, this issue has been raided with the Non-National Roads Office as the N28 Upgrade Scheme does not extend onto the R610. However, the Engineer at the Non-National office has developed a number of options for the Rochestown Road and my letter has been forwarded to him for attention. I suppose I must further do some digging to find out exactly what these options are. A year should do it Id say!!!
Intoxicating Liquor Act 2008
The Minister has recently signed the Commencement Order on the above Act. It will come into effect on 30th July. This applies to all the public order provisions, the increases in fines for breaches to the licensing laws and New hours for off sales of alcohol; Tougher public order provisions allowing the Gardai to seize alcohol from minors; a court procedure to secure a new wine-only off-licence; New grounds for objection to the granting of an off-licence; New conditions attaching to the granting of a special exemption order; Holders of theatre licences will be restricted to the normal licensing hours unless additional hours are sanctioned by a special exemption order. The public order provisions allow for a Garda to seize alcohol from those under 18 yrs of age in a place other than a private residence, if the member suspects, with reasonable cause, that alcohol is being consumed or intended to be consumed. The Gardai will also be permitted to seize bottles or containers containing alcohol where there is a reasonable apprehension of public disorder or damage to property and require a person to leave the place concerned in a peaceable and orderly manner. The Minister states “The prosecution of a person under 18 years of age will only arise where there is a failure to cooperate. These new powers will therefore not only assist the Gardai in responding to, and preventing, unacceptable behaviour but they have the potential to enable the Gardai to achieve that end while reducing the time-consuming activities connected with the prosecutions and court appearances.”

Do Antidepressants Increase the Risk of Bone Fractures?
If you are taking any one of a number of antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) for depression, you may be at a higher risk for bone fractures. Antidepressants in this category include Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Celexa and Luvox. Virtually every drug has some type of side effect. A recent study conducted by David Goltzman, MD, the director of the Centre for Bone and Periodontal Research at McGill University in Montreal, concluded that daily use of SSRIs doubles the risk of bone fractures in adults aged 50 and older. Goltzman and his research team monitored 5,008 participants in this age group throughout a five-year period; the average age was 65. Daily SSRI usage was reported by 137 of the participants. Those on the SSRIs proved twice as likely to experience fractures as those not taking SSRIs. There are specific actions you can take to reduce your overall risk of fractures in the post-50 years, including making sure you have the proper amount of calcium and Vitamin D in your diet, exercising and remaining physically active, and avoiding cigarettes and the overuse of alcohol. Although depression is common in older adults, there are numerous drug-free ways to treat it, including: Exercising because it helps to release nor epinephrine and endorphins, the “feel good” chemicals that occur naturally in the brain. Eliminating sugars and refined foods from your diet because these foods can make you feel lethargic and anxious. Also avoid foods high in carbohydrates because they can affect your blood sugar level, making you feel tired or depressed after eating them. Seeking professional counselling or journaling your feelings to gain important insight into what is really bothering you and making you feel so low. Eating healthier foods that make you feel happy, such as oily fish (tuna, mackerel, and halibut) and foods that contain high levels of Vitamin B6 (fruits, poultry, soy beans).

Eye Exercises
Natural Remedy for Eye Strain?
This exercise is designed to help counteract the tendency to squint. With your eyes half-open, look up while exhaling.
By Cathy Wong
Fitness Exercises Eye exercises are widely promoted as a way to improve vision naturally. Although there’s no evidence that they can correct any visual problem such as nearsightedness or farsightness, some people who work on computers all day find them helpful to relieve or prevent eye strain. Once you’ve memorized the routine, you can easily do it throughout the day. Here’s how to do it: Sit at the edge of your chair with your back straight. Close your eyes and place the palm of each hand over an eye, so you feel your palms warming your eyes. Remove your hands, keeping your eyes closed. Inhale deeply through your nose. Exhale and let your head drop forward then rotate it from side to side. Shrug your shoulders, making circles with them forward and backward. Close your eyes tightly and lift and tighten your shoulders as much as

you can. Hold for a few seconds and then exhale, suddenly releasing your shoulders and opening your eyes. Repeat this several times. Blink repeatedly, fluttering your eyelids until your eyes become moist. Repeat this several times. Breathing naturally, focus on an object far away from you for about half a minute. Try to maintain your focus, then blink rapidly several times. Then focus on a nearby object for about 15 seconds. Try to maintain your focus, then blink rapidly several times.
p
This exercise helps the extrinsic muscles that move the eyes. Try to keep your head straight and in line with your spine. Roll your eyes into all of the directions below while exhaling: Upward Downward To the right To the left Up to the right at 45 degrees Up to the left at 45 degrees Down at 45 degrees to the right Down at 45 degrees to the left Hold each of the above positions for a few seconds and then return your eyes to the centre while you inhale. Again trying to keep your head straight, look straight ahead at an object. Exhale and look from side to side without turning your head. Now try to exhale and turn your head from side to side several times letting your eyes follow the head movement. Then turn your upper body from side to side and let your eyes follow. Place your palms over your eyes to warm them. When you are ready, remove them and open your eyes.

things to do this week
The wonderful thing about gardening is that it is always ‘that time of year again’. As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week. Flower Garden Start planting new hardy perennials while the soil is warm. Check lilies such as L. tigrinum for bulbils at the base of leaves, and pot these up under glass. Layer border carnations, cutting the stems where they touch the soil and applying hormone rooting powder. Kitchen Garden. Sow cold hardy lettuces in a frame, or outdoors for transplanting to frames. Finish harvesting herbs for drying. Sow a second batch of spring cabbage. Check early apples and pears for ripeness. Stop outdoor tomatoes one leaf above the third or fourth truss. Lawns & Hedges Finish planting colchicums, autumn crocus and stembergia to naturalise in parts of the lawn and to flower this autumn Greenhouse Continue taking fuchsias cuttings, and root in a shaded frame or greenhouse. Sow parsley in pots for winter use indoors Repot white arum lilies. Remove growing tips from coleus to prevent them from flowering. If possible, empty the greenhouse, make any repairs, and disinfect or fumigate before bringing in plants for the autumn Water Garden Continue dividing and otherwise propagating vigorous aquatics In General Cut down peas as soon as they are finished; compost the tops and leave the roots to decay. Spread fine nets or fleece over brassicas to keep cabbage white butterflies away. Look out for bacterial canker on plums and cherries; treat with Bordeaux mixture monthly until midOctober. In a drought soak fruit trees and bushes with recycled water, and then mulch. Lift any remaining shallots and dry in the sun. Start lifting maincrop potatoes if the tops are yellow, or where slugs are a problem.

young @ heart by Phil Goodman Someone should have a word with the High Court Judge or whoever is responsible for forcing a top Garda to retire at 60. Surely in this day and age if that person wants to extend it to 65, it sounds very reasonable to me. Assistant Commissioner Martin Donnellan lost his appeal in the High Court against compulsory retirement at 60. It is not so much that I am concerned about the particular Garda, but it looks as if they are suggesting that when a person reaches the age of 60, they are old. We here in the Young at Heart group consider 70 the new 50, so 60 is the new 40!! I think I will invite the judge and those who made the ruling down to one of our events, and let them see for themselves that our 60, 70 and 80, and even 90 year olds could teach them a thing or two. Obviously they are not familiar with Senior Groups up and down the country. How about a petition to let them know our feelings? The annual Douglas Lions Club Barbeque was held last Sunday. Great credit is due to the members for a wonderful day, even the weather was kind. If it rained they were prepared with a marquee, so they had every angle covered and of course it was the men who did the cooking. Well done to all concerned. Our next trip is to Hillsboro Castle on the 5th August – 7am flight with Aer Arran to George Best Airport Belfast, and a bus will be waiting to take us to Hillsborough and show us the sights of Derry for the day. We will also visit a fabulous Shopping Centre, and view a Silver collection in Hillsborough. This collection is normally kept in Downing Street,
and it should be quite a display. There are a few places left for this trip, so if interested give me a call on 4363867. On August 12th we will be heading to Baltimore with a visit to Sherkin Island. Please get your names in to me as soon as possible as it is filling up fast. Please let me know beforehand if you are coming with us, as if you turn up on the morning without booking the bus could be full. We will be starting our programme shortly right up to Christmas. If you have any ideas or suggestions, we would love to hear from you. We send Birthday Wishes to our (forever) friend Minnie McCarthy who is 70 years old this week. “Enjoy your day, Minnie” If anyone has any spare time, the Heart Foundation are looking for collectors for their Church Gate Collection on the 9th and 10th of August at St. Columba’s Church. Give me a call, please.

Franz New Album
the US box office. It took £77.7m, beating the record set last year by Spider-Man 3, which took £75.5m. The Dark Knight also broke the opening day record, taking 33.2m on Friday. Dan Fellman, Warner's head of distribution, said, “We have been thrilled by the response to The Dark Knight, first from the critics and now from audiences.” The film features one of the last performances from Heath Ledger, who passed away in January, aged 28. I personally went along to check out the film in Douglas Cinema, I thought the movie was great, superb acting, excellent special effects and a top notch original plot to it. The only thing that let me down was the overwhelming heat in the cinema, it made a 2 and a half hour film a struggle!!! Just to finish I’d like to recommend you check out Amadans & Bodhrans at Clancy’s this Friday, their a trad and folk band with fierce enthusiasm and are sure to provide mighty craic!!
Franz Ferdinand have revealed their new album is being produced using unconventional recording methods. The Scottish band are hard at work in Glasgow finishing off their third album with producer Dan Carey and have been working in an experimental fashion. Frontman Alex Kapranos said, “We have been doing a lot of experimenting in the studio with Dan. He's made us record the album in a much wilder way than we're used to.” He went on to say, “We did this thing in the studio called the Doppler Effect, which is like when you are on the high street and you hear an ambulance go past and the sound of the siren pitch changes when it passes you.” Fans will have to wait a while longer to hear just how wild the LP is, as the currently untitled record isn’t set for release until in early 2009. Lil Wayne is being sued for allegedly releasing a version of a Rolling Stones song without permission. In a lawsuit filed in New York, Abkco Music Inc accused the rapper and his label, a subsidiary of Universal, of copyright infringement and unfair competition. Abkco claim that Wayne's Playing With Fire is derived from the English band's Play With Fire. The company also say that Wayne, real name Dwayne Michael Carter, used "explicit, sexist and offensive language" that could lead the public to believe the Stones approved of the rapper's version. To film news now and Batman sequel “The Dark Knight” has set a new box office record for best opening weekend ever at

Sport Douglas CS Craig Murphy Douglas CS has been putting in some superb performances on the track of late. Craig recently took part in the British Milers Club Grand Prix in Solihull and produced an outstanding 3rd place run with a time of 14.39 for 5000m. He also recently took part in a 1500m race in Gent Belgium running a new personal best time for the 1500m and ran a huge new best for 3000m in the BMC Grand Prix in Manchester over 3000m with an 8.20 clocking. Craig has run personal best times for 1500m, 3000m and 5000m this season and his 3000m time of 8.20 ranks him 7th on the European Junior rankings. Craig is also the number one Irish junior athlete over 3000m and 5000m by a good margin. He now takes a well-deserved break before taking up a full sports scholarship in Dublin City University in September and planning towards the European Cross-Country championships in Belgium in December. Also setting the track ablaze of late is former Douglas CS student Mark Hanrahan. Mark has ran an outstanding 8.01 for 3000m and more recently ran a 4.00 minute mile just narrowly missing out on the sub 4 minute clocking. Congratulations to both Craig and Mark who have been the greatest athletes ever to represent Douglas CS. All at the school wish both athletes the very best of luck in the future.

Alan Power RIP
Passage West GAA Club would like to pass on our condolences to the family of Alan Power who passed away in Singapore at the weekend. There was great shock and sadness in the area at the weekend when news spread of Alan’s sudden death and sunday’s hurling match was called off as a mark of respect. Alan was an active member of the club and kept in touch with the goings on in Passage even when after he moved to Singapore. Club secretary John O’Connor paid tribute to Alan and offered the sympathies of the club to his

family. “Alan was a whole-hearted, skilful and dedicated player. Though he was on the other side of the world, he will still an active member of our club. Alan was a very popular and prominent Passage player and played at every grade at juvenile level. It was with great sadness that we heard of his passing. He graduated to the adult football team and was a whole-hearted, skillful and dedicated player also contributing to the club’s administration. His work took him to Singapore where he continued to play Galeic football but he keep in touch with us. He turned up to games whenever he was home, and always knew of our latest victory or loss.”

Douglas Girls Soccer
Silver Medal for Sinead
Local girl Sinead Duggan brought a silver medal back to Douglas last week after participating in the 42nd International Children’s Games in San Francisco . The tournament is endorsed by the international Olympic Committee and therefore is essentially a children’s version of the Olympic games. The World famous Golden Gate Park , the University of San Francisco , San Francisco State University and AT&T Park will provide venues for this exciting event. The San Francisco Games will bring together 2,000 athletes, 12 to 15 years of age, from 100 cities representing 50 countries from around the world, to put forth their personal best in track and field, tennis, swimming, volleyball, soccer, table tennis, basketball and golf. Sinead was selected to play for Cork in the women’s soccer competition at the games. Cork ’s involvement was due to a joint venture between Cork City Council and the Cork Women’s And Schoolgirl’s Soccer League and was also supported by Gaisce. Sinead’s participation in the tournament however was cut short. “I got caught with a late tackle and damaged ligaments in my ankle, I ended up in hospital for the night.” Cork were undefeated in the tournament and it took apenalty shootout to separate them from San Mateo in the final. The team did a fantastic job of representing Cork and have put the city on the international map for women’s soccer. The drama was to continue for Sinead on her travels home. After flying with the squad from San Francisco to Heathrow, the rest of the squad got their scheduled flight to Cork Airport , unfortunately Sinead who was on crutches and had her leg in a cast couldn’t be accommodated on that flight. Sinead and coach Deirdre Kearney arrived in Cork two hours behind schedule but the goalkeeper was in upbeat mode. “I’m very happy that the team did so well in an international competition.” She said. “Obviously I’m disappointed I didn’t play more because of my injury. I’d like to say thanks to Deirdre Kearney, Marie O’Leary and Ber Cahill for looking after us all. I’ve been playing for Douglas Hall two years now and I wouldn’t have been able to make this trip were it not for the effort my Douglas Hall coaches Paul Fox, Pat Cooney and Noreen Martin put in.” Added the 15 year old. Kelly Sugrue from the South Douglas Road and Leanne Mullins from Grange, were also in the squad scoring some vital goals as their team marched towards a silver medal and Ber Cahill from Frankfield was the teams coach.

Douglas v Inniscarra
Well done to the Douglas Under 16’s who beat Inniscarra with a score line of 3-10 to 1-1. Great scores from Katriona Mackey and Claire Shine saw Douglas steam ahead in the match. Well done also to Pamela Mackey Ailin O’Donovan, Ciara Lynch and Emily O’Sullivan who worked tirelessly throughout the game. Some superb saves from Keeper Jessica Kavanagh along with her outstanding puck outs saw off any threats on goal. Well done again to all the team and their coaches.
CORK UNDER 16 - ALL IRELAND FINAL
Best of luck to our five Cork players Ailin O’Donovan, Ciara Lynch, Jessica Kavanagh, Katriona Mackey( vice -captain) and Pamela Mackey ( captain) who travel to Thurles on Saturday 2nd August to play in the All Ireland under 16 final against Kilkenny. Throw in is at 2.15. Cork scored a great victory against Dublin last weekend to succure their place in this final. Best wishes to the entire under 16 squad and their coaches. We wish all these girls every success next weekend and congratulate them for their victories so far as they have done their clubs and their county proud.

Douglas GAA – Senior Section
scores from Mark Barry, Mark Collins, Brian O’ Connor and Kevin Murphy kept Douglas in the game which was very close. Douglas eventually won out keeping Passage to three points in the second half.
Douglas through to city division final
The final score was Douglas 16 points to Passage 2-08 with Mark Collins once again delivering a fine performance scoring nine point from play and from frees of Douglas’ total tally.
By Eilish Barry
By Pat Harrington Cork vs. Galway
Because of time restraints I was unable to submit this report prior to the Cork/Clare encounter. The knives had been drawn following the performance against Dublin. The sharp objects were pointed at both the players and the Management team. The feeling was that a longer implement would be used this time – like a Samurai sword – in the event of defeat. Galway went into the game at 7 / 4 on. At half time BoyleSports were offering the very generous odds of 11 / 2 on Cork. At this stage Cork were 2 points down, playing with 14 men and facing the wind for the second half. The management team, who were much criticised this year emerged from the game smelling of roses, as so they ought. Well done to them. The players were magnificent; they appeared hugely motivated. Rarely have I seen Seán Óg so hyped up. It was stated on the Sunday Game that Galway were being bullied by Cork. Nothing wrong with that really – remember 2006 all-Ireland final vs. Kilkenny when the Cats gave Cork a lesson in bullying. The Cork game plan, to get the ball to the inside forwards as quickly as possible was not evident in the games against Tipperary and Dublin. This was slightly modified in the second half of the Galway game, where the ball was driven to both corners. I suppose it is unfair to pick out individuals on this occasion but I feel compelled to mention Deano, Curran, Naughton and Ben O’Connor – to name but a few. The scenes on the pitch after the game were a joy to watch. Martin Coleman was carried shoulder high. It was like a Munster / all-Ireland final without the cup, such was the euphoria. Cyril (The Bird), The Drummer, The Chief and the man with the Bagpipes were present in all their regalia. They are marvellous supporters who enhance the whole occasion. It was a long day; we first went to Athlacca, Limerick where the Douglas intermediate hurlers played the local club team. Finbarr Murphy and his sons Eamonn and Seán were great company for the day. In Douglas Village that night we played the game over again, with the local lads hanging on our every word and wishing they had travelled – their loss. As previously mentioned it was not an all-Ireland final but it showed there is life in the old dog yet.
Sport
Douglas are now through to the final of the Junior A City Division championship following a victory over Passage on Saturday evening last. Mark Collins opened the scoring for Douglas and scored six in total in the first half with four from frees. It was Passage that were on target with goals scoring one after a quarter of an hour and the other just on the cusp at half time. Despite nine points in the first half Douglas trailed by two. Half time score was Douglas 0-9 to Passage 2-5. In the second half Douglas continued to work very hard and

Cork vs. Clare (Under 21 Hurling)
I suppose it is human nature to look for scapegoats when a team is defeated as were Cork under 21 hurlers in the game against Clare. The public expected Cork to cruise home; it would seem the players believed it too and the reputations of some of their numbers were badly damaged in this encounter. The Clare team displayed desire, passion, commitment and above all the will to succeed. The selectors will receive no plaudits for their reluctance to replace players when clearly some were making no impression. It appeared from my vantage point that the mentors were anxious to make moves but there was reluctance on the part of the coach. The last all-Ireland won at this grade was in 1998. The Slán Leat Tournament. This is the relegation side of the championship. Bantry were relegated from senior football, a once very proud club. Youghal were relegated for the second time in the last few years. Another city club that has been relegated to junior hurling is St. Finbarr’s. Last year Glen Rovers likewise were relegated to junior hurling, whilst Aghada have gone to normal intermediate grade having lost out to Arigideen Rangers.
Provincial Football Winners
The provincial football winners were Cork, Galway and Dublin and Armagh. Outside of that Kerry will make a serious challenge and there are a few northern teams who will seriously threaten any of the provincial winners Cork will not play again until 9/10th. August. In the meantime their opposition may have played 2/3 times during that period. Certainly Cork will be at a huge disadvantage. More next week, Pat.
