An emergency Dail debate was held on Tuesday 13th of March during which the proposed cut backs to Sonas was discussed. The average salary of an SNA is around €30,000 a year and when one looks at government ministers, spending €130,000 on an adviser which is €38,000 over the government pay cap or the fact that it is planned to repave Graffton Street in Dublin at a cost of €5 million, maybe a better investment would be in our most vulnerable children. To these SNAs it is not just a job it is a vocation.

Bikers Care Well done to the over 100 bikers who turned out last Sunday morning at Keary’s Motorrad in Little Island for the start of the Cork Motorcycle Racing & Vintage Club’s charity bike run in aid of St.Pauls School, Montenotte. The run took in Youghal, Lismore, Fermoy, Castlehyde and Mallow before finishing at the Commons Inn at Blackpool. Special Kids Need Special Needs Assistants! We at the Douglas Post have had a special relationship with CABAS and SHINE who school and educate young people with autism. Recently government cutbacks have affected many special needs schools but the loss of Special Needs Assistants at the Sonas School in Carrigaline is a particular pill that is hard to swallow. Stuart O’Mahony whose daughter Amy is 4 years old and has autism, attends Sonas Special Junior School for children with autism in Carrigaline, where parents and staff were told on March 9th last that NCSE (National Council for Special Education) have done a review of staff there and have decided to cut a quarter of the SNAs (Special Needs Assistants) from the school. This is an outrage and cannot be allowed to happen, there are currently 16 SNAs and 6 teachers that care for the needs of 24 very special kids in four classes, who receive one to one tutoring which they so badly need. These needs and the care will suffer greatly with the loss of 4 SNAs. “Amy started school last September, she was non communicative and because of the work they do down there she now speaks” said Stuart. “She has a lot of trouble transitioning from one place to another (she stops

at doorways and has to be coaxed through) and at the start she refused to even go into the school and used to throw herself on the floor and it would take 2 SNA’s and the teacher to get her in, they would sit with her outside the school and try all sorts to get her in, but now she has improved a lot but though still has some problems and needs the SNA’s” Teachers and SNAs bring the kids on social outings to the supermarket and to the Carrigaline Court hotel for toast to teach them how to deal with social situations, but they need one SNA per child as like Amy a lot of these kids need close attention and care. Sonas is a special school not just in name but because it is the only one of its kind in the country that will take these kids in at a preschool level. They prepare these kids for moving onto primary level be it into mainstream, special units or special schools.It’s a key part of the early intervention that is so crucial for autistic children, Amy is currently undergoing toilet training, for which she needs an SNA with her at all times. There are 14 kids leaving this year (6 going to mainstream schools and the rest to units and special schools) and that means that there will be 14 new children starting in September and

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn

Teresa Diamond who passed away last week touched many of our lives. Her presence in our world was a gift we will always be thankful for. Many will only know or remember her as the “Lady with the Dog”. Teresa, always a familiar sight out walking her dog, had a great love of animals and of nature. Every morning in her back garden she would utter her own code of call to the Birds and sure enough within minutes they would surround her as she fed them. Teresa will be sadly missed by her many friends especially Kevin Moriarty, and the many wonderful girls, who were always there for her, at Dunnes Stores in the Douglas Court Shopping Centre. Cork Just two days before she died Teresa wrote a little poem. Thank you Teresa! May you Rest in Peace. We know you’re up there with St Francis sharing all the wonders of the Garden in Heaven. And thanks to your good neighbor Phil Goodman for forwarding your poem.

Community Maintenance Grants Scheme 2012 Cllr Kieran McCarthy is calling on Community Associations, Residents Associations to avail of funding for Cork City Council’s Community Area Maintenance Grants Scheme in 2012. Grants are intended to fund or partfund community initiatives with a litter prevention focus. Cllr Kieran McCarthy noted “there are currently four litter wardens for the entire city and because of the economy an embargo on recruiting extra staff exists. That means the current litter wardens are struggling to police the city’s litter problem. In that light it is important that the local community also take care of some of the aesthetics of their local area. The community grants available are ideal for community groups and in particular city schools; community clean-ups add to the student’s curriculum in raising the importance and value of community and engaging them in citizenship and social responsibility.” Application forms and details of conditions are available from Environment and Recreation Directorate, Room 232, City Hall, Cork, telephone 4966222 ext. 4308, 4299, or from environment@corkcity.ie. Douglas Churches Together 2012 Four churches in the Douglas area have joined together to promote Holy Week and Easter celebrations. They are St Columba’s (RC), St. Luke’s (C.of I.) Cork Methodist Church, Ardfallen, and St. Patrick’s (RC). On Palm Sunday 1st April at 3pm, people from all these churches will gather in the Douglas Community Park for a short time of hymn singing and prayers led by clergy and laity. In memory of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem on the first Palm Sunday, we plan that a donkey will head a procession around Douglas village with stops at the churches of St. Columba and St Luke for further prayers and Bible readings. During Holy Week which runs from 1st -7th April, publicity stands will be present in Douglas Court and Douglas Village; these will be staffed by volunteers from the four churches between 11 am and 3pm each day from Monday to Saturday, excluding Good Friday. Volunteers will offer timetables of Masses and Religious Services to shoppers. Free literature will be available. A Prayer Box will be available at each stand and all prayer requests will be included in the liturgy of a different church each day during Holy Week. On Easter Morning, Sun 8th April at 7am, an ecumenical Celebration of the Resurrection will take place at St. Columba’s Church after which breakfast will be served in the Parish Hall. All these events are open to anyone who wishes to attend. These events are an encouraging sign of the greater cooperation now existing between Christian denominations and are to be welcome by all who care about the Christian message, the future of the Church and its role in society.

Douglas Community Assoc. Tribute to Patsie Simkin, a Woman for all Seasons It was with great sadness and regret that we heard of the death of Patsy Simkin. Patsy was a long-time member of Douglas Community Association, and a member of the Executive Committee right up to her passing. A wonderfully talented woman, with multiple gifts, Patsy used her gifts to enhance the lives of those around her. She trained in nursing and subsequently midwifery in London and returned to Ireland in the 50’s, where she practiced as District Nurse and Midwife for many years, delivering hundreds of babies at home, throughout the Douglas. She kept a log of these births in her Log Book and a Mrs. Lowry from Donnybrook was the last entry. Home births began to go out of fashion in the mid-sixties and Patsy went back to school and got her teaching qualification as a Music Teacher. She taught piano to many children in the community over the years, and used her musical talent to enhance the lives of the people in the community. She did the rounds of the hospitals at Christmas time, she used to dress as Santa Claus, gather a singing group together, and raised funds for local charities and for the poor, down-at-heel Irish In Cricklewood, for whom she had deep, empathy and respect and whom she never forgot. She was a natural poet and used poetry to express thoughts on everyday living, if you got a Thank You note from Patsy for inviting her to your home, it would be in the form of a beautiful poem. Patsy’s Husband, Johnny Brown died, leaving her a widow in her 50’s. She remarried many years later. In her 70’s, Patsy went back to UCC and received a B.A. Degree in Psychology. She was a wise, openhearted woman, and had friends of all ages, who respected her advice, and opinions which were always very measured, practical and logical. Anyone who called was treated to tea and a selection of goodies in the parlour by the fire and always interesting conversation on any topic. Patsy was a life-long member of Douglas Church Choir, and was presented with a Life Long Membership Certificate from the choir shortly before she died. A lover of nature, Patsy’s garden was always

full of flowers for each season. She will be sadly missed by her family, her daughter Margaret Burke, her son Sean Brown and their families and by her two sisters and brother who loved her dearly.

Corkman to Represent Ireland at the World Cocktail Championships in Beijing in October. East Village Bar, Restaurtant & Hotel Barman, Chris Crowley wins National Title. The Bartenders Association of Ireland (BAI) hosted the annual National Cocktail Competition as part of the inaugural Food & Bevy Live in the City West Convention Centre, Co. Dublin. The national cocktail competition was sponsored by Edward Dillon & Co. Ltd. Bartenders from across Ireland came together to battle it out and create their ultimate cocktail mix. Their common goal was to be awarded the title of National Cocktail Champion 2012. Chris Crowley at the tender age of twenty one from Ballincolllig, representing East Village Bar, Restaurtant and Hotel in Douglas, County Cork won the prestigious title of National Cocktail Champion 2012, now in its 40th year. He will now represent Ireland at the World Cocktail Competition in Beijing, China in October this year. The competition was divided into four categories 1) Pre-Dinner cocktail, 2)

Long Drink, 3) After Dinner cocktail and 4) Fancy cocktail. Entrants were judged on the preparation of their cocktail, appearance, aroma and taste. Chris ‘s entry was a “Monks Martini # 2 Cocktail “ , which comprises of Bombay Sapphire Gin , Green Chartreuse, Gifford’s Honey Syrup ,Lime Juice and dashes of orange bitters with apple fan with orange & cherry for garnish / decoration. The international panel of judges awarded his cocktail the “Pre-Dinner Cocktail Winner “and the overall winner to represent Ireland in the International Cocktail Championship in Beijing. Speaking after the competition, Declan Byrne, President of the Bartenders Association of Ireland (3rd term), said “To be awarded the title of National Cocktail Champion happens only once per year. Chris has achieved this at such a young age and his future looks very bright. He’ll be a great ambassador for Ireland in China”. Derry O Regan of East Village Bar, Restaurtant and Hotel stated “Cocktails are an extremely important part of our business and Chris Crowley title is a great compliment to his dedication and we have no doubt he will represent Ireland well at the World Championships in October“. We had a night to remember at the over 60’S competition in St Columbas Hall,it was special because contestants were singing for The Luke Philpott Perpetual Memorial Trophy, we had nine singers on the night all performed so well, in fact Luke had a new song for the competition, but the Lord designed otherwise and I am sure Luke joined in with us on the night from his heavenly home. It was a great honour for the Young at Heart and for the people of Douglas to perpetuate Lukes memory, but there can be only one winner. Well done to Billy McCarthy who sang the lovely song “Eileen” he was delighted to win on the night but to be the first man to lift the Luke Philpott Trophy brought tears to his eyes. Billy now goes forward to the semi -final in the city hall on April 15th. If you want to support Billy you can contact me for tickets on 4363867. The historical tour of Douglas last Saturday with Cllr Kieran McCarthy was a huge success and the weather was beautiful for the occasion. He spoke of the Belfast connections with Douglas the way machinery was transported to the village, the story of Douglas seems to be in part a story of experimentation of industry and of people and social improvement. Our thanks to Kieran, for transporting us back in time and reminding us of our heritage and how our village developed. Due to popular demand we hope to continue another tour in the coming weeks. Another event to look forward to is the annual waltz competition on April 5th in Douglas GAA hall. Dancers will compete for the Douglas Village Perpetual Trophy; Rona Coulter of Viva Dance Studio along with Ernest

Perryman will judge the competition. There are prizes for 1st -to 6th in both categories, Man and Woman Dancing and same prizes for two women dancing, for more info give me a call. I hope by now you have your Easter Bonnet ready for the competition next Tuesday night in St Columbas Hall at 8. 30. All welcome to take part in both events.

An annual fundraising lunch in aid of Suicide Aware is due to be held at the Clarion Hotel, Cork, on March 30th. Rugby legend and columnist with the Irish Examiner, Donal Lenihan and Kerry footballing hero and Sunday Game analyst Pat Spillane will take part in a post lunch panel discussion where they will answer questions from the attendees. The event will begin with a sparkling wine reception at 1:30 pm followed by a three course lunch, including wine at 2:30pm. Tickets for the event are €60 and a raffle will also take place on the day. All proceeds from the lunch and raffle will go to Suicide Aware; a Cork based voluntary charity set up to help people dealing with the issues of depression of suicide in Ireland. attended a celebration party in the school hall. The first title was won by the Christ King Senior Soccer team Senior FAI Schools All Ireland competition. In the final they beat Moville Community College 5 – 2, this is the second time in 3 years that the team coached by Mr F O Leary and Mr B O’ Connell have won this title. The previous week the school’s Junior soccer team were narrowly beaten by Moville in their All Ireland Final, 3 - 2. In Basketball Christ King’s Junior Basketball team have achieved the Double in winning both The Cup and The League All Ireland Finals. In the Cup they beat Our Lady’s Templemore comprehensively, in the League they had a very competitive match against Mercy Convent Coolock, 45 - 37.

The Supporters who travelled to the All Ireland Finals were colourful and lively and chanted for their team to the last whistle. Migraine Migraines are chronic headaches that can cause significant pain for hours or even days. Symptoms can be so severe that all you can think about is finding a dark, quiet place to lie down. Some migraines are preceded or accompanied by sensory warning symptoms or signs (auras), such as flashes of light, blind spots or tingling in your arm or leg. A migraine is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound.

Symptoms Migraines usually begin in childhood, adolescence or early adulthood. A typical migraine attack produces some or all of these signs and symptoms: Moderate to severe pain, which may be confined to one side of the head or may affect both sides

How do I handle mum’s Alzheimer’s?

Head pain with a pulsating or throbbing quality Pain that worsens with physical activity Pain that interferes with your regular activities Nausea with or without vomiting Sensitivity to light and sound When untreated, a migraine typically lasts from four to 72 hours, but the frequency with which headaches occur varies from person to person.

Causes Although much about the cause of migraines isn’t understood, genetics and environmental factors seem to both play a role. Migraines may be caused by changes in the trigeminal nerve, a major pain pathway. Imbalances in brain chemicals, including serotonin — which helps regulate pain in your nervous system — also may be involved. Serotonin levels drop during migraines. Diabetes, what do I do now?

This may trigger your trigeminal system to release substances called neuropeptides, which travel to your brain’s outer covering (meninges). The result is headache pain.

Treatment A variety of drugs have been specifically designed to treat migraines. In addition, some drugs commonly used to treat other conditions also may help relieve or prevent migraines. Medications used to combat migraines fall into two broad categories: Painrelieving medications and Preventive medications.

Lifestyle remedies Self-care measures can help ease the pain of a migraine. Try muscle relaxation exercises. Get enough sleep but don’t oversleep. Rest and relax. Keep a headache diary.

Herbs, vitamins and minerals. There is some evidence that the herbs feverfew and butterbur may prevent migraines or reduce their severity. A high dose of riboflavin (vitamin B-2) also may prevent migraines by correcting tiny deficiencies in the brain cells. Coenzyme Q10 supplements may be helpful in some individuals. Oral magnesium sulfate supplements may reduce the frequency of headaches in some people, although studies don’t all agree on this issue. Whether or not you take preventive medications, you may benefit from lifestyle changes that can help reduce the number and severity of migraines. Greenhouse

Support peonies, deiphiniums and other precocious perennials before they become very large. Plant gladioli and other summer-flowering bulbs. Plant evergreen shrubs and conifers, and shield from wind in exposed gardens. Sow hardy annuals direct where there are spaces in borders. Plant out spring-sown sweet peas after hardening off. Deadhead spring bulbs if seeds are not needed, but do not remove flower stems. Where wind has damaged the growing tip of young trees, tie in a flexible upper branch to a tall cane as replacement.

Prick out celery and celeriac sown last month. Shade young plants and seedlings with newspaper in bright sunshine. Sow cucumbers and melons for growing in unheated greenhouse and cold frames. Plant tomatoes in unheated greenhouse. Train tomatoes on canes or strings in heated greenhouses, and remove sideshoots regularly

Cover a row of strawberries with cloches or fleece to advance crops by a fortnight. Dig a trench for traditional celery, and work in plenty of manure arid compost.

Watch out for early invasions of aphids and other precocious pests. Check over-wintered tender plants are growing well, ready for reintroduction to the pond in a few weeks. Bring bags of compost into the greenhouse to warm up before use.

Lawns & Hedges Sow new lawns on well-prepared sites. Trim young conifer hedges to height and shorten any long side branches. Plant box, laurel and other evergreen hedges.

Water Garden Start feeding fish if they are actively searching at the surface.

Franz Ferdinand have announced a mini Irish tour in advance of the release of the band’s fourth studio album, which is due out later this year. The Scottish group will play three dates in May across Ireland. They play Cork on Sunday 20th May in Pavilion. Shaw and several of Ireland’s most exciting performers, including Colin Dunne and Kate Ellis, join the Gamelan in a programme of new music and dance, as well as traditional Javanese music.

The UCC Javanese gamelan – a set of 66 bronze gongs and metallophones, drums, flute, spiked fiddle and zither – was made by Java’s greatest living gong-smith, Pak Tentrem Sarwanto, in summer 1994.

One of the world’s finest classical theatre actresses, Fiona Shaw also has impressive film credits to her name and a growing reputation as a director of opera. Fiona is winner of many awards for theatre, including three Laurence Olivier Awards for best actress, two London Critics›s Awards and one New York Critics›s Award for her performance in TS Eliot›s The Waste Land (which she also performed at the Everyman Palace Theatre, Cork). She was awarded an Officier des Arts et Lettres in France in 2000 and an honorary CBE in the 2001 New Years Honours. US University Opens International Centre in Dungarvan Mercyhurst University, which is based in Erie, Pennsylvania, USA, today announced the official opening of an international centre in Dungarvan. The centre was officially opened by Mr Michael Noonan TD, Minister for Finance. There will be three strands to Mercyhurst’s activities in Ireland. The centre will offer US students an opportunity to study with their professors in Ireland In addition, the University is looking to establish links between Irish and European academic institutions, and preliminary discussions have advanced with Waterford Institute of Technology The third element is the establishment of Mercyhurst’s European Centre for Intelligence, Research, Analytics and Training (CIRAT). This centre will provide opportunities for training

in analytics for both the public and private sectors. This is an emerging market with an estimated value of €1.8billion in Europe.

Pension entitlements of politicians found guilty of corruption should be withdrawn Fine Gael Cork South Central Deputy, Jerry Buttimer, has this evening (Monday) said he supports calls to withdraw the pensions of politicians who are found guilty of corruption or misconduct. Deputy Buttimer was speaking at the Annual General Meeting of the Grange Frankfield Fine Gael Branch. “Politicians are elected by the people to serve all of the people; not vested interests or golden-circles. If a politician betrays that trust there must be consequences. It is wrong that someone who acted inappropriately can retire without any significant personal consequence and that they can continue to have the benefit of excessive lumps sums and overly generous pensions. This must be stopped. “I agree with suggestions that laws should be put in place that permit the withdrawal of pensions of politicians who have been found guilty of corruption or misconduct. The Mahon Tribunal has recommended that the sanctions contained in the Public Bodies Corrupt Practices Act 1889, which includes withdrawing pension entitlements, should be extended to Oireachtas members. “There may be difficulties in enacting retrospective legislation but it can be put in place for current and future Oireachtas Members. The recommendations in the Mahon Report should be acted on. This is one measure which can be implemented quickly. “The Government should consult with the Attorney General to see if it is possible to implement similar legislation which will have the same effect where former Oireachtas members who have been criticised in tribunal reports are concerned. “There must be severe consequences for corrupt activities. Corrupt civil servants and politicians should be held to account. I believe this should include measures to reduce or withdraw their pension entitlements.”

Special Olympics Ireland’s annual Collection Day will take place throughout Ireland on Friday 27th April 2012. This is the biggest annual fundraising event in aid of Special Olympics Ireland and is hugely important to the organisation. The aim of Special Olympics Collection Day, which is proudly supported by eircom, is to raise as much funds as possible to build and support the programme of sports training and competition offered by Special Olympics Ireland so that every person with an intellectual disability has the opportunity to be involved. 600 volunteers will be needed throughout Cork City and County to look after the collection points in Cork City, Clonakilty, Macroom,

Proposed Youth Theatre A new youth Theatre is being organized in Carrigaline. Caroline Conway heads up the venture in conjunction with the Carrigaline Arts Network. Damhsa Fest 2012 This year’s DamhsaFest (Cork International Folk Dance Festival) will take place from Wednesday 25th July to Sunday 29th July. Active Retired Last Thursday in the Parish Centre the Carrigaline Active Retired Association was given a most informative talk on gardening by John Cummins of the Stonewall garden centre. John who has total command of his subject treated the attendance of 54 members to a highly entertaining afternoon. The gardening

enthusiasts in the group were quick to identify the different plants that John had on show and spoke about. He presented some spot prizes and raffled more including a summer flower basket he designed. Many bought plants and shrubs, which will adorn their gardens and the neighbourhood in the years ahead. This Thursday 29th March CARA go on a day out to Glenstal Abbey in County Limerick. The bus leaves the Bandroom at 10.00 am. The members will attend Mass at the Abbey have lunch there and be given a guided tour of the Abbey and gardens. On the way home they will call to the Crescent Shopping Centre. As next week is Holy Week CARA will not meet but will be back in action on Thursday 5th April with Lind dancing with Frankie Brierley.

Men’s Shed The new men’s club the Carrigaline Men’s Shed continues to make progress. I have oft’ been critical of poor refereeing decisions and I must confess I have in the past had a number of spats with the man with the whistle. That said I would never leave the field of play after a game without shaking hands with the referee. I often ask myself the question, who would want to be a referee? The amount of criticism hurled at him and the abuse referees have to take would make one wonder why these men volunteer their services. Recently there has been a lot of comment in the print media regarding the suggestion that the Revenue Commissioners plan to tax the income received by referees when they officiate at games. The rate paid to referees varies from division to division and from the different boards. The Cork City Division reduced the 40 euro payment to 25 euro but in time reinstated the original figure. A figure of 13.71 euro + 50c per mile travelled has been spoken about. Apparently the Limerick board (through Revenue) has been requesting P.P.S. numbers. So what if referees are making a few bob during the summer months? I certainly am disappointed that it has come to this in order to get more revenue in. There are surely other areas where this paltry sum could be collected. Any man who has the courage to act as referee deserves this little consideration, if only in appreciation of the abuse he so often has hurled at him. The government must realise and appreciate that without sport we would have a lot more vandalism and even more serious crime.

Douglas have three players, Paul Fitzgerald, Jamie Davis and Kevin Hayes Curtin on the Cork minor football panel. Paul Fitzgerald has been on the Cork hurling panel as well but has been tied up with Coláiste Chríost Rí and Douglas under 21 these past few weeks. Mark O’Connor has been with the under 17 hurling squad and was recently invited by the minor selectors to play in a challenge game against Dublin. He contributed five points from the corner forward position. Management teams are perhaps giving their squads an opportunity to show their mettle during the league. Some players who may have been injured are again getting game time. While they all like to do well in the league there sights are obviously on the championship. For some it is a provincial title – for others Sam is the ultimate goal. Summer Time

Summertime has arrived, with longer nights and the smell of new-mown grass. The good weather of late should have the pitches in pristine condition. Douglas G.A.A. and Scoil Phádraig Naofa Coaching Initiative Since the school opened at Foxwood, Rochestown in 2009, the management Principal and staff of Scoil Phádraig Naofa have sought to foster a sporting culture among its students. This was acknowledged by Chairman of Douglas Hurling & Football Club Fearghal Hayes, on a visit to the school on Friday 22nd March. Hayes noted how members of Douglas Hurling & Football Club have always been warmly received when visiting the school and hoped that this relationship would now be cemented, with the launch of a formal coaching structure that will complement the school’s ethos. While addressing the teachers and students of the school, under-age coach Eddie Murphy noted the results of a 2011 study that linked the growing trends of childhood obesity and related illnesses with the sedentary lifestyles prevalent in modern society. The emergence of social networking via the internet and computer games as preferred choices of recreation has meant that children are more sedentary than previous generations

Murphy confirmed that Douglas Hurling & Football Club recognises its responsibility in encouraging the young children of the community to embrace a physically active and healthy lifestyle. To support this commitment, Barry O’Donoghue and Martin McSweeney of the Douglas G.A.A. under-age and street leagues presented school Principal Fiodhna Ní Bhaoill with hurleys, sliotars and footballs. Also, at the launch the club announced that senior players Martin Barry and Patrick Scannell will assume a central role in imparting the skills of hurling and football to the children. Principal, Fiodhna Ní Bhaoill thanked the club representatives for their contribution and referred to Martin Barry’s recent attainment of a Garda Youth Award when remarking how the Douglas G.A.A. coaches serve as valuable role models for the children in the community.

The away side dominated much of the play and led by two goals to nil at half time after well taken scores by Eoin Murphy (7) and David O’Sullivan (23). Corinthians could have led by more but for the Everton Keeper who was in terrific form. Second half goals by David O’Sullivan (37), Eoin Davis (40) and Arseni Lamonov (53) ensured the win for the Castletreasure side. The Corinthians defence will no doubt be very happy again with another clean sheet. Rockmount were not to be denied however and with Corinthians tiring they grabbed the winner in the final ten minutes. This was a great effort by our lads who continue to improve as the season progresses.
