Kiely-Walsh Academy Reels in World Titles Well done to The Kiely-Walsh Academy which has once again hit an all time high winning 2 World titles along with 2 seconds, 2 thirds, a fifth and seventh and eight for both individual and team competitions, at the recent World Irish Dancing Championships held at the Waterfront Belfast. The Academy are no strangers to success having won 2 All Ireland titles and 8 Munster titles in the past few months. Congratulations all!

Cork Motorcycle Racers do well at The Masters I travelled to Mondello last Saturday evening for Ireland’s premier motorcycle racing series ‘The Adelaide Masters’ and while I missed Saturday’s racing, Sunday threw up all sorts of conundrums as the ‘neither here nor there’ weather played havoc with tyre choices and bike setup however, a great day was had by all and in particular a very successful weekend for Cork riders. Declan Swanton scored three emphatic wins in the Pre Injection Class and a 3rd and 6th in Supersport, while another Carrigaline man Paul Tobin had a 2ndand 3rd in Super Twins. Rookie John Horgan had a superb 3rd in the wet in only his second ever race and Brian Coomey from Douglas scored a 3rd in the Superbike Cup race.

Douglas Business Association (DBA) Dear Editor I am following up on our first meeting which occurred on the 22nd March. The DBA was delighted with the interest expressed by its members at its inaugural meeting. Thank you to everyone that came and made such valuable contributions. There is currently an opportunity for the DBA and its members to have its say with regard the Land Use and Transportation Study for the Douglas area.You will note the initial public consultation occurred last week and the DBA sent a delegation to the Rochestown Park. In attendance were Padraig Sheehan, Padraig Barrett, Sean O Riordan, Betty Forde together with Dan O Mahony. Cork County Council wants to hear the views of Douglas Business People.

Members are invited to please revert with what they feel are the top 5 issues that need to be addressed in Douglas. Particular reference on how services and land use might be improved for business in the area. All comments welcome. It is envisaged that a sub committee will be formed and a submission might be forwarded from the DBA to Cork County Council in advance of the 11th May 2012. A further email will follow members who expressed interest joining a committee with a view meeting this Thursday 6pm in Columbas Hall.

Cork South Central Fine Gael TD Jerry Buttimer has welcomed the announcement of support of the Corona Cork Film Festival. Minister of State for Tourism & Sport Michael Ring TD has today (Thursday) announced €180,000 to support ten festivals taking place all around Ireland this year. “The funding announced by the Minister will help develop and promote the Cork Film Festival. It will ensure that it continues to be a successful event on Cork’s calendar of festivals. “This year’s festival will be the 57th time the annual event takes place. It has become an event to look forward to each year. I’m confident that with this funding, continued local support and the dedication of the staff and volunteers this year’s Cork Film Festival will be another resounding success, continuing to build on its reputation as a premier festival for screening short films. “Cork is a festival city, all through the year there are different events and festival attracting tourists to the city. Seen, Read + Heard by Michael O’Hanlon Let me begin by thanking all the people who welcomed me back and all the good wishes. They are much appreciated. May I begin by stating that I am not and never have been a member of any political party or club. Hold on, I just remembered, I joined the Douglas Snooker Club many years ago because it entitled one to go to the front of the queue on Christmas Day, but as I passed about 15 guys on the stairs waiting in line for a free table and stood at the front waiting for the next table, I said to George “Cancel my membership after tonight, George”. Perhaps a muttering word from someone in the queue “B……. helped! I’m neither Left or Right wing, Conservative or Liberal, a Holy Joe or anti religion - to each his own. There’s nothing wrong with prayer, it gives people hope and comfort. I don’t telephone my Labour T.D. and tell him to get that Angelus off R.T.E. television. What will I listen to instead? I met a woman recently who told me that a Crib in a Cork Hospital had been removed before Christmas. Did the birth of a child in a manger cause grievous offence to some passerby in the hospital? My message is, respect other people’s beliefs, or, in plain English, get a life. The Catholic Church must change and it must lose this obsession with all matters relating to sex. I would welcome married priests, women priests; they would have a lot more to offer, understanding and compassion and knowing what is going on around them in the real world. Christian Fundamentalism is huge in America and growing rapidly. The strange thing is that they don’t like Obama because he believes in healthcare for all, the distribution of wealth, food stamps for the poor. What would Jesus have made of his followers in the U.S. Bible Belt? The Catholic Church has got to follow the social Gospel. Finally on the subject my late Mother-in-Law, a seamstress, used to say “you might as well be dead as out of fashion!” Only yesterday I discovered that the weekly payment for a single mother and child is €188 for the mother and €28.90 for the child that’s just €4 a day for the child. So I did some research on the Fianna Fail Ministers, Brian and Bertie. The top 7 pensions totaled €750,000 a year which is the cost of over 700 single mums and children a year. I have not included the huge lump sum severance pay they got. The Government tells us the good news “Exports are up” and by the year 2013 we’ll have exported almost 500,000 of our population. Add in Fás workers, and if these exiles hadn’t left we would have a million on the Live Register. Hey, but the Chinese are going to save us, or so we’re told, but we need bricks and mortar jobs, construction jobs. We need to see those yellow jackets, hard hats and breakfast rolls again. Austerity does not work, it will never work. This plan of austerity is similar to “Debt by a thousand cuts”. I met a reader in the Shopping Centre last Saturday who told me that she would have voted for ‘Attila the Hun’ to get rid of Fianna Fail, but she felt that at least with Fianna Fail they came at you face to face, but this crowd are attacking us from behind. Her parting works were, “ no money, no hope, no leadership” I wanted to tell her to Google FDR’S Inaugural speech of 1933. Back then people had no money, jobs,

food, hope, but by God, they had leadership. A man crippled by polio got them off their knees. In the first 100 days of his Presidency together with a brilliant organizer and ex Social Worker, Harry Hopkins, they got 8,000,000 (that’s 8 million) people back working. In Ireland Enda and company were going to have a party as thousands were leaving our land. Speaking of Google, key in “over 100 TDS over-claim expenses.” Some familiar names are there, but thankfully nobody that I know personally. It makes grim reading. A message to Phil Hogan, “Phil, the people who I have met regarding the Household Charge are not rabble, commies, Sinn Fein, Socialists – they are middle income families who are telling you no more, and do not underestimate them. You can push somebody so far and they are waiting for the Local Council elections. I’m only passing on the message. By the way, Peter Matthews the Fine Gael T.D. told Vincent Browne a few weeks ago that if everybody earning only €120,000 per annum paid an extra 5% Tax, it would generate €500 million, which would be three times the projected income from the Household Charge. Perhaps Peter, Shane Ross and Stephen Donnelly should get together and form a party. They would surely do a better job than 3 school teachers. CUH Hosts Free Bowel Cancer Information Event In order to raise the awareness of Bowel Cancer amongst the general public, clinicians in Cork University Hospital (CUH), are holding a free information session from 2.00pm to 4.00pm on Saturday 28th April 2012 in the main lecture theatre at CUH. This event is part of Bowel Cancer Awareness month (April 2010) and is supported by the Irish Cancer Society. More than 2,200 people in Ireland are diagnosed with bowel cancer every year with the incidences of disease increasing as people get older; the highest being amongst the 55 - 74 age group. Over the last 15 years the number of cases of colorectal cancer has risen by approximately 20% in both sexes. This projected growth is primarily attributable to an increasing and ageing population. However, younger people are diagnosed also and should be aware of signs and symptoms and services available. A number of clinicians from CUH with expertise in bowel cancer will speak at the free information event and discuss a range of topics including; signs and symptoms, who is affected, where to go for help, what happens after diagnosis and current and future treatments.

Bus Éireann staff to play their part on Special Olympics Collection Day Bus Éireann is proud to announce its involvement in Special Olympics Ireland’s annual Collection Day. The collection day, which is the biggest annual fundraising event in the Special Olympics fundraising calendar, will take place throughout Ireland on Friday, 27th April. Bus Éireann staff at 13 stations across the country will help raise essential funds, which will help Special Olympics Ireland continue to grow its programme of sports training and competition for people with an intellectual disability throughout Ireland. Matt English, CEO Special Olympics Ireland said “We are delighted that the staff at Bus Éireann are lending their support to our Collection Day on April 27th. This is our biggest annual fundraising event and as such is of huge importance to us. It is with the support of companies like Bus Éireann that we will successfully achieve our target of recruiting 3,500 volunteers to fan the flame for us on the day”.

Artist Of London Irish In Cork Exhibition open until end of June Exile World, an exhibition of paintings on the theme of emigration by Bernard Canavan, the artist of the London Irish, runs at the Boole Library at UCC in Cork until the end of June. The exhibition was formally opened by Piaras MacEinri of the UCC Geography Department who said that the paintings captured a segment of Irish emigrant life largely ignored by society depicting home sickness, and exploring the exile world of London pubs, bed-sits, building sites and dance halls. The artist, whose wife Jan is from Bandon, also designed many of the posters for the Sugawn, the famous Irish pub theatre in London during the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties. To mark his visit to Cork a special portfolio of his Sugawn work was presented to him by UCC graduate Sarah Keane of Blackrock on behalf of the Sugawn Memorial Committee.

It stirred me with many emotional thoughts and childhood reminisces of my mother and it reminder me that no matter what occurs around us or in our lives everyday should be Mothers Day. Lions Club Walk The Line For Charity Irish athletic legend Sonia O’Sullivan and Minister for Agriculture, Food & the Marine Simon Coveney TD have lent their support to the Carrigaline & District Lions Club annual Carrigaline to Crosshaven Charity Walk. The walk, now in its fifth year, will take place at 3pm on Sunday the 27th of May. This year, all proceeds are going to the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind and the walk is kindly being sponsored by PepsiCo. The event’s official Media Partner is 96FM. The five mile walk will start from the People’s Park at the Community Centre in Carrigaline and will finish in the square in Crosshaven. A number of well-known faces will walk with Guide Dogs on the day following a dog handling presentation. Prior to the walk The Owenabue Valley Traditional Group will provide live entertainment along the route at Agamartha. The walk will finish in the square in Crosshaven where live entertainment will be provided as well as food from Cronin’s food stands, face painting and many other attractions. A free bus service will operate between Crosshaven and Carrigaline for participating walkers from 2pm to 6.30pm. Sponsorship cards may be obtained from a number of outlets in the area including the Spar Supermarket, Waterpark Stores, Slynes Maxol and Texaco Service Station’s in Carrigaline and Lynch’s Centra in Crosshaven. In Over 60S Final Joe Drennan representing Carrigaline GAA was selected at the semi final of the Over 60s in City Hall last Sunday night to go through to the overall final of the competition on Sunday 26th May. Joe who is a retired builder lives in Crosshaven. He sang ‘Shenandoah’ to the delight of the capacity audience and to the satisfaction of the adjudicators. Tickets for the over 60s final will be available in Pro Musica and Blackpool Shopping Centre from this Thursday. Proceeds go the Irish Heart Foundation.

Summer Céilí Mór The first of the Carrigaline summer Céilí Mór will take place in the GAA Pavilion on Saturday 5th May with music by the renowned Sean Norman Céili Band from Edenderry, County Offally. The Shed Representatives of the Carrigaline Men’s Shed travelled to Midleton last Friday to a gathering of Men’s Shed members from Youghal, Midleton and Carrigtwohill. The meeting was arranged and chaired by Stacey of SECAD. They discussed progress to date since they last met at the SECAD offices in November last. Youghal have been up and going for a number of years but all other groups in the region including Cobh and Carrigaline have only just started. Continued progress is reported from the Carrigaline Men’s Shed. Cleaning and painting and fitting out of the various rooms is continuing and a few raised gardens will be constructed and planted on site while plans for the development of the polytunnel project are progressing and work is due to start later in the month of May. Pay Parking In Douglas Imminent Fine Gael and Labour have let the people Of Douglas down with the imminent introduction of pay parking. Pay and display machines are to start appearing on the streets over the next two weeks. Independent Councillor David Boyle states “that the contention by Fine Gael and Labour Councillors’ that the introduction of pay parking in the Douglas area would be good for business and would support jobs into the future is astonishing. Such a contention beggars belief in the present economic environment”. At the April meeting of the Carrigaline Area committee, Cork County Council confirmed that the process to introduce pay parking in Carrigaline has be postponed due to a lack of resources. Independent Councillor David Boyle states, “that the postponement of the process of pay park in Carrigaline is due to the strong opposition from myself and the local business community”. Councillor David Boyle wishes to place on the record his opposition to pay parking in Carrigaline and Douglas at this time. Cllr. Boyle continues,” The people and businesses in Douglas have been left down very badly by Cork County Council and the Fine Gael and Labour Councillors’ who voted for the introduction of pay parking in Douglas. If pay parking is introduced into the Douglas area it will be seriously disadvantaged over Carrigaline. The present position discriminates against Douglas over Carrigaline and should be abondoned as Douglas will be a less attractive place to shop.To ask people to pay for the privilege of parking in Douglas in addition to the existing high motoring costs is an outrageous attack on the commercial life of businesses in Douglas, its inhabitants and visitors. I will continue to oppose the introduction of pay parking in Douglas and Carrigaline until the economic climate improves”.

Last Tuesday saw the introduction of Douglas Creative, a new project that will take place every Tuesday night from 7 to 9 in the Youth Cafe in St. Patrick’s Wollen Mills. This project is aimed at 17 to 24 year olds that have an interest in making Douglas a creative hot spot in Cork.

There are only 15 places available on the project and it is first come first served. To be in with a chance of getting involved you need to fill out an application form, which are in the Douglas Library or email roundhouseoffice@gmail.com and we will email you one, which you must then print out fill in and return with your deposit!

The project is made up of a number of workshops including everything from Performance, and Film to Event and Production Management. There is no charge for these workshops but a deposit of €50 must be paid when

Douglas Library - Book craft in the Trenches A unique exhibition is currently on display by the first year students of St. Francis Capuchin College in Rochestown. Based on their reading of the novel “Private Peaceful” by Michael Morpogo, the students have created their own authentic handmade journals detailing the life of soldiers in the trenches . This exhibition is highly recommended and definitely not to be missed.

I’m sure lots of people, like myself, missed his weekly articles and the fun and originality of his approach to life which always left the reader feeling like they had just bumped into an old friend and had a great natter, and got lots of things off their chest! This is where you belong Michael, back with your people. If only the country could bottle your passion, enthusiasm, and ability to reinvent yourself, we would be up and running again soon!

Volunteers!!!! There’s lots of work to be done at DCA, as we have taken on a huge project, headed up by Paudie Martin, to put on a 2-storey extention to the old centre at the community park which is badly in need of upgrading. While Paudie has provisionally secured a lot of grant aid, we will not recieve it unless we, as a community, raise a good proportion of the funding ourselves. To do this, we will have to set up a dedicated fund-raising committee and we are very short of volunteers, in fact very disappointingly so. If you have any skills in marketing, selling, accounts, data-inputting, fund-raising, plain old hard-grafting, and have a positive attitude, please get in touch with us

Tidy Towns This hard-working group of volunteers meet up every Saturday morning and clean-up all over the Douglas area between 10.30 and noon. High viz jackets, picks and plastic bags are supplied. They do a marvellous job so deserve our support. Supervalue in Grange provide us with two of their trainee managers every Saturday to join in the clean-up. We can all make a difference in our community and in giving we receive the friendship and respect of others. Care-Ring Douglas The cold snap doesn’t seem to be over yet as we have experienced very low temperatures this last week. We need to keep an eye on our elderly neighbours. Douglas Care-Ring provide a service of keeping in regular contact, by way of a friendly social phonecall, to older people within the community. They are supported by volunteers who are HSE-trained and Garda-vetted. The service is a link for people who are unable to leave their homes and also for people who may feel lonely and isolated, especially as the colder weather takes a grip. Seizures What is a seizure? A seizure (also called a ‘fit’ or convulsion) occurs when there is a ‘disruption’ or a brief break in the electrical activity between the neurones (specialised brain cells) in the brain. There are many different types of seizures, varying from absence seizures that look as if a person is staring into space, to more obvious convulsions that involve the entire body. Some people only have one seizure in their lifetime while others may have many. Most seizures last less than five minutes. Seizures are not always a sign of epilepsy (a medical condition that causes seizures). They may be caused by brain injury or infection, fever, drugs

Types of seizures Below are some common types of generalised seizures. Tonic clonic – The person may cry out (wail) before losing awareness (consciousness). Their entire body stiffens and starts shaking or jerking violently. They may fall to the ground and may injure themselves as a result. Their eyes may roll back (so you can only see the white part) and they may turn blue around the lips or in the face. • Absence – The person may have a fixed gaze; as if a person is staring

How can I help? There are some things you can do to help a person who is having a seizure: • Remember to stay calm. • Do NOT put anything in the person’s mouth (including your fingers) or give them anything to drink or eat (including any medication) until they have regained consciousness and are fully awake

and alert (not sleepy or confused). • Ensure the person cannot injure themselves – remove sharp or hard objects (if possible) from around the person and place something soft under their head. Do not try to restrain the person. Make sure you do not get injured if they are thrashing around. • Take note of what time the seizure began and time how long it goes for; if it is longer than five minutes or you are very worried and need help then call an ambulance. • Place the person on their side once the seizure has subsided and their body has softened (it is stiff and rigid during a seizure). We are now extending the service to home visitation as we have identified a great need for such a service as with any new projects we need volunteers it will be a small commitment a few hours every second week all volunteers will be Garda vetted and HSE trained to be a part of this worthwhile and rewarding community service contact me for more info. Presently four different groups of older people are doing practical computer studies these classes will finish in May all receiving their certificates on completion that is a total of 42 people every week in three different locations doing classes, which will be of huge benefit to them allowing them to keep in touch with family and friends at home and abroad. The next classes will be in September, if anyone is interested let me know as they tend to fill up quickly, all classes are free of charge thanks to VEC, and also Intel and an Post.

As part of ongoing research project into the history of the south-east ward, Cllr Kieran McCarthy will conduct a historical walking tour of Blackrock Village on Sunday 13 May 2012, 6.30pm, leaving from Blackrock Castle (approx 1 ½ hours). The earliest and official evidence for settlement in Blackrock dates to c.1564 when the Galway family created what was to become known as Dundanion Castle. Over 20 years later, Blackrock Castle was built circa 1582 by the citizens of Cork with artillery to resist pirates and other invaders. In the early 1700s, the prominent Tuckey family, of which Tuckey Street in the city centre is named, became part of the new social elite in Cork after the Williamite wars and built part of what became known in time at the Ursuline Convent. The building of the Navigation Wall or Dock in the 1760s turned focus to reclamation projects in the area and the eventual creation of pubic amenity land such as the Marina Walk during the time of the Great Famine. The early 1800s coincided with an enormous investment into creating new late Georgian mansions by many other key Cork families, such as the Chattertons, the Frends, the McMullers, Deanes and the Nash families, amongst others. Soon Blackrock was to have its own bathing houses, schools, hurling club, suburban railway line, and Protestant and Catholic Church. The pier that was developed at the heart of the space in time led to a number of other developments such as fisherman cottages and a fishing industry. Cllr Kieran McCarthy noted: “A stroll in Blackrock is popular by many people, local and Cork people. The area is particularly characterised by beautiful architecture, historic landscapes and imposing late Georgian and early twentieth century country cottages; every structure points to a key era in Cork’s development. Blackrock is also lucky that many of its former residents have left archives, census records, diaries, old maps and insights into how the area development, giving an insight into ways of life, ideas and ambitions in the past, some of which can help us in the present day in understanding Blackrock’s identity going forward.” Don’t forget the Talent Competition auditions next Sunday, 11-5pm, Lifetime Lab, more information at www.kieranmccarthy.ie

For further information checkout: www. magicuncorked.com. Cork band, Time Is A Thief, have announced a new album and Irish tour. Their debut album, ‘We’re Not Strangers‘, is out April 27th. If Scotland’s Biffy Clyro and Twin Atlantic met Trent Reznor half way in Cork, Time Is A Thief could well be the kind of sound they would drag kicking and screaming into the world. Despite being together for a relatively short period of time, Time Is A Thief have already played with contemporaries such as Dinosaur PileUp, Twin Atlantic and Canterbury,

and have learned pretty quickly how to blast out a shit-hot, sharp-shock, astounding piece of hard rock. This electrifying band blend staggeringly good, hard-hitting guitar riffs with searing vocal melodies and solid rock drumming (citing influences from seasoned showmen the Foo Fighters) all under the experienced ear of their producer, Ciaran O’Shea (Cyclefly). The lead track from the album will be ‘Eyes’, and they are currently booking dates around the country as part of an extensive assault on Ireland’s venues in the weeks leading up to their debut album release. ‘We’re Not Strangers’ bangs out 11 great rock songs and startles your senses with reassuring tales of honesty and revenge, debt and addiction, angry men and stitches, relationships and the end, earwigs, inner voices and plain old making a balls of yourself. All the band’s members, bar one, grew up in Midleton, Co Cork, together, attending the same schools, running in the same circles and naturally playing in the same bands together. Jeff, Jimmy and Murf began a Rage Against the Machine tribute act, whilst in another part of town Adam was belting out numbers with an originals band named Citizen Elmo. Both acts ultimately parted ways and Adam joined the Middleton trio to form Time Is A Thief. The group began gigging, built a set and launched 2 EPs: the garage-recorded, rough and ready ‘Conservations’ (2009) and the lighter, more polished, pop-phase offering titled ‘Identity’ (2010). Somewhere between the two tracks is where the Time Is A Thief members realised this was going to be something to start making the necessary sacrifices for, both in their personal and in their financial lives. Their album title comes from the idea that, although they have been together for a few years, this album might be the first music many people have heard from them. Now, after the hard slog of putting in the time, paying their dues and building themselves up, this will not be the last. Cyprus Avenue on the 12th and 13th of may. Sinead O’Connor says she is cancelling her 2012 tour due to her bipolar disorder. The singer made the announcement in a posting on her website, saying that she is “very unwell” and had been advised by her doctor not to hit the road after her “very serious breakdown between December and March”.

In December, Sinead announced her split from therapist Barry Herridge after 16 days of marriage. The Irish singer-songwriter is best known for the early 1990s hit Nothing Compares 2 U. Her latest album - How About I Be Me (And You Be You)? - was released in February. The 45-yearold says she had planned the tour because of the album’s release, but was “attempting to be stronger than I actually am”.

Last Week’s Teazer. The parish clerk of a West Cork town received a small parcel from Germany addressed to Mr. Alfred White, she checked the telephone directory but could find no one listed under that name. However, when she inquired at the local pub she was told by some of the town’s old timers that there had been an Alfred White and that after World War 2 , he had married a German and settled in Frankfurt. What was in the parcel?

Last Week’s Answer. Mr White was , or at least his ashes. His last request was that his remains be interred in the local cemetery. The German authorities did not know who to address the urn to and so came up with a rather strange solution to their dilemma. Thur 26 April ’12 - 25

Things to do This Week As we move into May everything is picking up pace. We’ll try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower Garden Finish sowing hardy annual flowers outside. Later sowings will result in later blooms. Sprinkle general purpose fertiliser around clumps of spring-flowering bulbs. Ensure permanent shrubs and hedging are given a generous feed using this or rose fertiliser. Hoe it into the soil’s surface and water in before covering with a mulch of garden compost. Place support frames over tall perennials, or those with a floppy habit. Remember to put eye guards on top of any canes used. Prune back the flowering stems of hellebores, such as Helleborus argutifolius, as soon as blooms are past their best. Cut back to their base to make room for new shoots. If seedlings are required, leave a stem to set seed, then collect and sow it when ripe. Lightly trim off dead flowers of moss phlox, saxifrage, aubrieta and other alpines once they have faded. Excessive growth should also be trimmed to keep plants tidy. Rooted portions can be potted up separately.

Kitchen garden Crops to sow outside or under cloches during early May include dwarf French beans, beetroot, sprouting broccoli, Brussels sprouts, summer and savoy cabbage, cauliflower, ridge cucumbers, endive, kale, kohl rabi, lettuce, marrows, peas, radish, spinach, swede, sweet corn and turnips. Delay sowings if soil conditions are cold and wet. For an early crop of beans, sow French and runner beans in pots in the greenhouse

or on a windowsill. Choose deep pots, if possible, sowing two seeds per pot, and thinning to leave the strongest seedling which is then planted outside in late May or June. Alternatively, sow directly outside under cloches in May or June for a slightly later crop

Greenhouse Continue sowing seeds of summer bedding plants. Thin out those in trays, or prick them out individually into pots. Hanging Baskets Plant up baskets with fuchsias and tender perennials, then hang them in the greenhouse to develop.

Water Garden Plant up new aquatic baskets with water lilies and other pond plants. If you have large, overcrowded plants, now is a good time to divide them.

In General Water newly planted fruit trees, roses and shrubs regularly to help their root systems establish. Hoe borders once a week to prevent weed seedlings establishing. Buy young plants for pots and containers as well for bedding displays. Most need to be potted up into 7.5cm (3in) pots and grown on in warm, bright conditions ready for planting out at the end of May. Be sure to acclimatise plants to cooler outdoor conditions before planting out. Don’t be lulled into a false sense of security by warmer days. While the weather continues to be unpredictable, it pays to take precautions.

FOCUS By Pat Harrington I.I.B.A. Short Mat Bowls Snippets from the local Results and Fixtures (Cork Zone) by Michael J.O’Shaughnessy and National Scene I cannot be 100% sure of the statistics but soccer probably has got the greatest participation figures on the playing fields. That said, for a lot of those playing the game it is about just kicking a ball around on Sunday morning and getting out for a bit of fresh air. The standard would not be great. Lest I get castigated for my remarks, of course there are those extremely enthusiastic fellows who train every week and treat their followers to games of quite a high standard. Rugby is a growing sport, boosted by the success of Munster and Leinster in the Heineken cup. No doubt it can be exciting to watch. Yet, club rugby would not have a big fan base. The numbers who watch Munster and Leinster never ceases to amaze me; such people seem to be smitten by this oval ball game. It really is a fashion statement, and the in thing is to be seen to follow this game. Poor G.A.A. Coverage You may well wonder where this article is going, why I digress from the norm. Well, I must express my disappointment with the coverage given to hurling and football matters by R.T.E. and The Evening Echo. Sunday night coverage by the National Broadcaster is to say the least amateurish; just a rushed onehour programme. With so many games going on they could surely stretch this to 90 minutes, devoting more time to each game. Showing two minutes and calling it highlights is an insult to the intelligence of the viewer. I sincerely believe there could be an hour-long magazine programme each week, involving travelling to counties and clubs to look at their facilities and perhaps taking in a training session. Included could be a discussion on financial issues, building programmes or pitch development. De Paper Coverage of club games – Senior, Premier Intermediate and lower grade intermediate in the Echo is appalling. For example about three weeks ago the Monday edition carried a fullpage report on an under 19 club soccer league game. The same publication and on the same night covered six games, Senior and intermediate hurling in less than one quarter of a page. Surely there is a lack of balance here. In fact some of these reports are basic in the extreme – often simple one-liners. The above is not merely a one-off but a regular occurrence. There is no doubt that intercounty games get the desired coverage but surely the club is where it all begins for the players. Perhaps it is the club that should be fighting the case with

our beloved Paper, or maybe the county boards need to wake up and smell the coffee. The P.R.O. will need to start earning her corn. Management To borrow a well-worn phrase from over the water, its ‘squeaky bum time, for intercounty managers. At this stage of the season county preparation should be on the final furlong for the first round of the championship. Sadly some frontmen have been ousted while others are getting in stinging preparation from former players and former managers. Cavan manager, Val Andrews resigned due to criticism from some board members following his second stint with the county. I understand that the players too were dissatisfied with his contribution. The most surprising, and what I would term stinging criticism came from Conor Hayes, the former Galway winning captain. (The last Galway man to lift the Liam MacCarthy cup). Conor himself enjoyed a stint as Galway manager but did not win the Liam MacCarthy during his term. Hayes strongly disagreed with the positioning of some players and went on to say that the team was not settled as were the Cork side. Cork are winning their games – 4 out of 5. Perhaps that is why they are settled. I reckon there are deeper problems within Galway hurling. Galway is one of the best, if not the most successful county at underage in the country, winning regularly at minor and under 21 levels. Where have all these players gone? Perhaps Conor should be looking more in-house. Cork is the only county that Galway has beaten over the last few years. When last did the Tribesmen defeat Kilkenny or Tipperary in the championship? For the record it was Kilkenny in 2005. I cannot claim that the present manager Anthony Cunningham has all the answers but perhaps he should be given a sporting chance. Condolences I wish to convey my sincere condolences to Breda Heffernan on the death of her beloved husband Martin, and to their family on the loss of their father. Martin has been a longtime member and loyal supporter of Douglas G.A.A. Club. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
